D-A-D - We All Fall Down

This week's "Record of the Week" album is Danish.

D-A-D is a Danish rock band previously known as "Disneyland After Dark", a name that had to be changed after a threatening lawsuit from The Walt Disney Company. Their style of music is often categorized as melodic heavy rock. They have also used the names D.A.D., D•A•D and D:A:D, each name representing a period in the band's history.

I've always liked the Danish's swing, sure they have had difficulty live up to the glory days but still managed to deliver some good albums and some mediocre once, but all with a high class.

Dic.nii.lan.daft.erd.ark, has indeed a lot to live up to. Their eleventh record sofar. I think this is pretty good. The album may seem muddy and somewhat meaningless at first. Listened a few times when it came out, ended up on the shelf, even started to collect some dust until I simply got hungry for a little D-A-D, that it then usually be that any of the classical records end up on the turntable, this time it was the latest instead and realized quite quickly that it was not that bad and now it has been spinning more than once and can not be more than this week's album :)

The record starts delightfully dirty with "A New Age Moving In". Even the first single "I Want What She's Got" is a really good track. The third track "The End" is classic D-A-D song, like these pieces they're really best at. There after, a lightweight before it gets heavy in the house again with "The Place Of The Heart". There are several good pieces on the album, such as "Breaking Them Heart By Heart", "Can not Explain What It Means" and "We All Fall Down", The last is a beautiful song with a real hook of melody which one goes whistling at and it is performed in a manner that only this band can. Music vise there is not much I can point on to, the singing are pretty worn, but that I can live with, these guys have been around for a while.

Can summarize this record on to state that Dic.nii.lan.daft.erd.ark. Is a really good album. You only need to give it some time.

The album was released on 14 november 2011 on Mermaid Records and Sony Music, and thus marks a break with EMI after several album releases on the record company since the early 1990s. The first single, "I Want What She's Got", was released on 30 September 2011. The album debuted at number two on the charts, surpassed only by Rasmus album Mer 'than love, which is the first time since the 1997 album Simpatico to a studio album from the band has not gone straight to number one. The album sold 4,846 copies in its first week. In december album received platinum for 20,000 copies sold.

DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK produced by Nick Foss, who also were behind albums like No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims (1989) and Everything Glows (2000). On his work with producer says lead singer Jesper Binzer "Nick loves songs, and we have many of this time. and it's cool when his pop ears respond to our hard-hitting songs." On the audio side, the difference compared to previous albums, according drummer Laust Sonne, "that we sound like a rock quartet. Neither more nor less. It is clean, tight and cash."

Todays tune "We All Fall Down" is taken from the latest record. One-take video recorded in real time the minutes before the sold-out concert in Falconer, Copenhagen in April.

Ugly Kid Joe - Devil's Paradise

Ugly Kid Joe is an American rock band from Isla Vista, California. The band's name spoofs that of another band, Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joe's sound includes a range of styles, including hard rock, funk metal and heavy metal. After releasing an EP, three full-length albums, and touring extensively throughout the 1990s, Ugly Kid Joe disbanded in 1997. They announced a reunion in mid-2010, and are going to release a new EP called Stairway to Hell on June 5, 2012.

The upcoming EP, to be released digitally on June 5, 2012, and physically a month later, July 9. This will be their first studio recording since 1996's Motel California, and their first EP since 1991's As Ugly as They Wanna Be. A video for its single "Devil's Paradise" was released on May 24, 2012 to promote it. On May 29, 2012 entire EP is available for streaming. The title of this EP is likely a parody of the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven" or the AC/DC song "Highway to Hell".

Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

L'Enfant Sauvage is the title of the upcoming fifth album release by Gojira, the album is also their Roadrunner Records debut. The title translates to "The Wild Child." The album features 11 tracks, and is scheduled to land at retail on June 26.

Frontman, guitarist and songwriter Joe Duplantier talks about the meaning of the upcoming album by saying, “When you become a musician, you don’t have a boss telling you what to do so you have to be very responsible.”

He goes on to say “With freedom comes responsibility, so I’m asking myself, ‘What is freedom? What does it mean to me?’ L’Enfant Sauvage reflects on that. There’s no answer though. There’s just life and questions.” In support of the album, Gojira will embark on a North American tour alongside Dethklok and Lamb of God, starting on August 1, 2012.

Gojira is a French heavy metal band from Bayonne. Formed in 1996, the band was known as Godzilla until 2001. Gojira is composed of Joe Duplantier on vocals and rhythm guitar, his brother Mario Duplantier on drums, Christian Andreu on lead guitar and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass. Since their first studio album, Gojira has had no changes in lineup, written five studio albums and produced two live DVDs.

Todays tune is the title track and first single from the upcoming album "L'Enfant Sauvage".

Tesla - I Love You

Tesla is an American hard rock band, formed in Sacramento, California as City Kidd, and was renamed Tesla during the recording of their first album, 1986's Mechanical Resonance, on the advice of their manager that City Kidd was not a great name (in addition, there was already another band going by that name). The band derived their name, certain album and song titles, and some song content from events relating to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.

The band's original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, bassist Brian Wheat, and drummer Troy Luccketta.

Tesla's music is often referred to as hard rock. The band's lyrics also strayed from the themes popular in hard rock, particularly in the 1980s at the beginning of their career. A further distinction from their contemporaries was their T-shirt-and-jeans image which was in strong contrast to glam metal bands of the time, which were characterized by big hair, leather pants, and flashy makeup. Also in the early days of their career, Tesla toured with David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, and Poison which incorrectly resulted in the band being categorized as a Glam metal band. The band's members resented this labelling.

Tesla did a reunion in 2000 after a 6-year break, the band has released records and toured periodically and in 2011, they released an acoustic album Twisted Wires And The Acoustic Sessions where we find today's tune "I Love You" a song that is perfect on a day like this :) Specially to my wife, this one is for you.

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye

Just returned from a short little trip to the northern part of Sweden and my home town for burial of my dear mother. Funerals are among the toughest things you can go through, especially when it is a close relative that passing away.

Starting with that one cries when you're in church, crying even more when it's time to lower the coffin into the soil, where after you eat and then you laugh, very strange really, but that is how it works in Sweden. But it was good to take a last farewell, and hope that I do not have to visit more funerals in a while. So with this song i say Goodbye mum, rest in peace, have a good one.

Todays tune "Last Goodbye" is the third track on Grace by the singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. It is also his second video. This song was originally titled "Unforgiven"; as stated on his official website by his mother, Buckley went through a metamorphosis with many of his songs, and it is evident when one hears early versions of "Unforgiven", one of which can be heard on Live at Sin-é (Legacy Edition), and the final version of the song heard on Grace.

Ian Hunter - Rest In Peace, London Astoria (2004) A tune by Mott The Hoople taken from "The Hoople"(1974) out-take was B-side on "Golden Age of Rock n' Roll" single. Ian often opens the show with this song that holds up so well 30 years on. This tune will sum up the last farwell from me to my mum.

Eagles of Death Metal - Speaking In Tongues

Today Im doing a hands up on a Swedish festival... Hultsfred, this is between 14 of June to 16 of June in a place called Hultsfred.

I will be there and report with fotos and so on. More good music at that festival is Slash and Myles Kennedy I´m really looking forward to that concert!! :D

This band is also comming to it, Eagles Of Death Metal, its not so death metal but its pretty good :D
Stones and I did a gig with em here in Stockholm couple of years ago.
These guys are really open, and gives it all and a bit more.

Who are they? Well, Eagles of Death Metal is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1998 by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme.

In a 2003 interview Homme described the sound of the band as a combination of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals." Jesse Hughes is known by fans for his enthusiastic interaction with audiences at live performances.

Kill Devil Hill - Strange

Kill Devil Hill are newly formed band that mixes strong guitar hooks, the killer grooves, the dynamic production or the potent vocal melodies.

Kill Devil Hill concists of Rex Brown (Down, Pantera) - bass, Vinny Appice (Heaven & Hell, Black Sabbath, Dio) – drums, Mark Zavon (Ratt, W.A.S.P.) – guitar and Dewey Bragg (Pissing Razors) – vocals.

Kill Devil Hill played their first gig back in April 2011, followed by a 5-week tour in October to test audience reactions. Without relying on the familiarity of Black Sabbath or Pantera covers, the band was able to win over audiences after just the first few songs. The band states that “We’ve never experienced that with a band at such an early stage.” Anyway, take a listen on todays tune "Strange", taken from the debut record.

The Cult - For The Animals

This weeks record on Tune Of The Day is a new album by the British rock band The Cult. If this will be a recurring theme remains to be seen, but a little different one must do to keep the steam up.

Choice of Weapon is the ninth album by The Cult. The album was supposed to be released in 2011, but the release date had since been pushed to May 22, 2012. Recording sessions for Choice of Weapon began in March 2011 with Chris Goss, who produced the 2010 Capsule EPs. The sessions took place at studios in New York City, Los Angeles, California, and the "California desert". The album was finished in January 2012. During the recording sessions, Bob Rock teamed up with The Cult for the first time since 2001's Beyond Good and Evil and co-produced Choice of Weapon.

The Cult returned in 2006, after a four-year hiatus, releasing the studio album Born into This in 2007. Although Born into This sold well, The Cult were dropped from Roadrunner Records, and in July 2009, frontman Ian Astbury stated that The Cult would not make any more albums. Asked in September 2009 why The Cult would not make another album, Astbury replied, "It's a dead format; we don't have the attention span for albums. The idea of going into a studio and spending a year-and-a-half creating a body of work which you put out as a body of work is pointless. By the time you put it out, it's already been leaked. It's a year-and-a-half worth's of work down the fucking tubes. We need to put out bite-sized chunks." Instead of releasing albums, The Cult released two EPs, titled Capsule 1 and Capsule 2, released in September and November 2010 respectively and the band toured to support them.

The Cult is not suffering from any old ailment, however, with this album, so it has been toned down a bit more messier sound, feels more clean than what one would expect with a band like The Cult. The record begins with excessive guitar riff in the song "Honey From A Knife". The song has a sing along chorus' We Got Drugs, We Got The Drugs", will certainly become a live favorite. The record contains more interesting songs, like Lucifer, the first taste from the record. It a really good driven tune and swings well. Wilderness Now is a beautiful song with a melody that settle directly in your heart. This is a lyrically deep album and it feels even bigger in the sound image than before.

Astbury sings really well, Duffy shows his talent with the classic "The Cult" riff. A record that will grow in time.

Todays tune, is from Choice of Weapon, titled "For the Animals". The Video was Directed by Michelle Peerali

Lugnoro - Familjen

Lugnoro is a Swedish progressive rock band, was founded in late spring of 2007 by bassman Antti Remes and guitarist Emil Rolof, after putting their previous project "The Earth Machine Band" to sleep. The band plays an 70s style of progressive rock were the songs rely heavily on guitars and Hammond organ and mellotrons. The lyrics is sung in their native tung Swedish, and takes on topics that encourage reflection. If a comparison would be made, then bands like Abramis Brama, Horisont be mentioned.

The band had in their beginning struggle to find a drummer who worked out. The band decided to record a demo anyway. With Antti (ex-drummer) behind the drums, the bands first EP was recorded in january -08 at the "Vintage Loft" studio with Anders Rane engineering. Antti moved to Finland in may -08 to pursue a career in boat construction. Shortly after, the band recruited Kim Stockfelt (bass), Mikael Edebro (keys) and Carl Baumann (drums). With this constellation the EP "Tellus" was recorded in march -09. Since then the band has gone through a change of bass player, and now filling the spot is Filip Lange. During 2011 the band has been recording their debut album "Annorstädes", which is now released on Ozium Records. I can really recommend this album. Do you like this kind of music, buy now! I hope that they will press up this on "Vinyl".

pg.Lost - Sheaves

pg.lost is a swedish experimental instrumentalism, an four-piece orchestra based in Norrköping, they shares members with Eskju Divine. The music has many directions, floating guitars, great melancholy grinding, devastating rhythms and airy harmonies, a sonic boundries of endless instrumental experiments of prolongi...ng. Their instrumental music has recently been compared to great bands like Explosions In The Sky and Red Sparrowes.

pg.lost recieved a lot of press attention because of an American individual attracting a record deal by falsely using their music as his own.

In 2007 pg.lost released the "Yes I Am EP" on the Swedish label Black Star Foundation. 29th of September pg.lost released their first full lenght album "It's Not Me, It's You!".

2009 pg.lost released their second full lenght album "In Never Out" which consists of over 50 minutes of instrumental music and shows a darker and heavier side of pg.lost. The album was recorded by pg.lost and mixed by Magnus Lindberg at Tonteknik Umeå.

4th of May 2012 pg.lost released their third album "Key". The album was also released on Vinyl, the 1st press (White vinyl, limited to 300 copies) is already sold out. But they are currently pressing a 2nd press with split color effect on the vinyl. Split color between black & transparent clear vinyl. Also some small changes on the artwork. The 2nd press is limited to 250 copies and might sell very fast as well. So please look frequently on pg.lost web page for updates according this. It should be released any day, you should try to get one, i will :)

The band concists of:

Mattias Bhatt - Guitar
Martin Hjertstedt - Drums
Gustav Almberg - Guitar
Kristian Karlsson - Bass

Todays tune "Sheaves" is taken from the latest album "Key", a brilliant piece of art. A song that starts hard and noisy, but fades down to a beautiful thing. No proper video was found.
