Gina Dirawi - Meet Me In Jannah

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

This week I take out the turns a bit and offer a bit of Pop with Arabic Folk Music, something out of the ordinary.

In addition to the big TV shows jobs, Gina Dirawi always dreamed of recording an album. Already seven years ago, she released a couple of singles, but it was only when she came in contact with Björn Yttling and Freja Drakenberg that she found home. "It has been like seeing yourself in sound," Dirawi said after meeting them.

Dirawi was born on 11 December 1990 in Sundsvall, Sweden, the second of four children. She is of Palestinian descent and her family comes from Lebanon. Dirawi's paternal grandparents convinced her father to move to Sweden.

"Meet Me In Jannah" is Gina Dirawi's debut album, produced by Björn Yttling and Freja Drakenberg, got released February 18th. In Juli 2021 she released the excellent singles ”Sunday” and ”Live And Die”, both of them was included in the Netflixserie ”Young Royals”. They got followed by "Blame It On Me" and Dirawi's first tune on Arabic, "Bmoot", that means "I die". The music on the album sounds magnificent, it's raw and feels spontaneous, partly improvised and the voclas are just marvelous, she intertwines Arabic folk music with alternative pop and creates a sound that is completely its own and she does it with such a confident, like she was born to do this full time. Her voice flows nicely, it's intimate and raw, like an instrument by it's own. The opening track "Sunday" she sings about praying to Allah: "Catch you on a Sunday / When you got the weekend off". It does not matter that it is a holiday and that no one may listen, the need for inner peace is too great to wait. The final and closing tune "Live And Die" is recorded in a single recording and the end of the song has been completely improvised. It is one of many moments on "Meet Me In Jannah" that remains long after the last notes have sounded out. I really enjoy this, after working with Gina, I never thought she would possess this knowledge, quite magically I must say, nicely done Gina! Now make sure to release this on Vinyl, because I want this.

Sum: ”Meet Me In Jannah” a rare confident debut, get it.

Today's tune "Meet Me In Jannah" is the title track from her debut album, "Jannah" is Arabic for "Paradise". TRIGGER WARNING, violent video.

Here is a excellent clip from the TV show "Nyhetsmorgon" a few days ago.

Jinjer - Wallflower

In the middle of a patriotic week, where the agenda was to play Swedish artists and then something like this happens that you never thought would happen again during these times, I thought that man had learned from his previous mistakes, but no that seams to be a fairytale, now a new crazy forehead is raging freely and creates chaos in this world, wonder what drug his running on and how is this even possible. I really suffer with everyone who is in Ukraine, or has some form of link there. This really is completely crazy that something like this can happen in the present time. I really hope that "The Old Man" on the other hand will capture his senses and retreat so this will not be a long story.

To support you all Ukrainians in this matter I thought that a tune from an Ukrianan band would be a nice gesture.

JINJER is a Ukrainian metalcore band from Donetsk, formed in 2008. None of the founding members remain with the band. The current lineup considers 2009 as its official year of formation, with the arrival of singer Tatiana Shmailyuk and guitarist Roman Ibramkhalilov. The band has since added bassist Eugene Abdukhanov and drummer Vladislav Ulasevich. Their most recent album "Wallflowers" was released in August 2021, an album where we find today's tune!

Today's tune "Wallflower", taken from the new album “Wallflowers”, released via Napalm Records on August 27th 2021.

Ossler - 16.45 I Smittans År

Pelle Ossler has a background as a guitarist in WILMER X, sidekick to Thåström, one of three members of the SÄLLSKAPET and much more. Since the 1990s, he has also had an ongoing solo career where he has released records in his own name. As many as eight pieces have been made with "Regn Av Glas" which is a generous piece of Swedish Smörgårds bord with over an hour of playing time divided into fifteen tunes where each song feels important and part of a larger work.

Pelle Ossler's music is like a soundtrack and “Rain of Glass” is as if you had composed Johan Theorin's magical Öland detective story “Skumtimmen” from 2007. It is both beautiful and calm, at least on the surface, but then there are things that rub in the soundscape, above all Pelle's guitar, which twists, hisses unbridled but still with control.

Pelle's guitars hiss and quarrel, he sings almost whispered his own and very personal lyrics that almost border on prose filled with breathtaking references and whims.

Give today's song a spin, you might enjoy it as much as I do.

Today's tune "16.45 I Smittans År", taken from the latest album "Regn Av Glas"

Johnossi - Mad Gone Wild

Monday, new week, it's time for us to introduce the "Record Of The Week".

"Mad Gone Wild" is the seventh studio album by the Swedish duo JOHNOSSI since the formation of 2006, this Stockholm-based duo consists of guitarist/vocalist John Englebert and drummer Ossi Bonde.

A band that always has had a great blend between rock and pop and got the eye and feeling to create catchy and mesmerizing tunes. On "Mad Gone Wild" they continue on the path they created fifteen years ago, but they take out the turns a little more, dares, and tries to create something new and interesting, something I think they succeed with well as here the tunes are both raucous and rousing, spacey and very energetic, catchy and electronic. On this record, the duo has dug deep into their own psyches and imaginations to realize something part-concept album, part catharsis, and entirely exhilarating and hypnotic. "Is there an exact point where reason turns into madness?" is one of the questions they brought with them during the creation process. "Are we not all completely insane in our very own unique way?" is another. Drawing on influences and inspiration from thier own periods of depression and anxiety, including Franz Kafka’s "Metamorphosis" and Scorcese’s "Taxi Driver", and Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Joker. The character Roscoe who appeared a bit here and has been in the duo's music since 2010 is also returning.

"Mad Gone Wild" is a dark piece to dig into, raw and still so haunting something that flows over all eleven tracks. The record has a great feeling and atmosphere that sounds refreshing, even if it sometimes results in some songs blending into each other and passing unnoticed. The lyrics are deep with a big heart and when the pace slows down and the words come out very powerful and tunes really hit hard. As in the title tune "Mad Gone Wild" or in the ending "Screaming". There are a few other tracks that need to be noticed like opening punk rocker "Give Me The Knife", the noise rocker "Something = Nothing", the garage rocker "Yeah Yeah", which has a great piano part that is led by their third and new member Mathias Franzen, who get some great space in the short instrumental interlude "Wizards Of Os". The new wave tune and the second single "Koala Before The Storm", is a really powerful tune. and the straight-ahead noise-punk of opener and paean to knife-play and three-day-benders ‘Give Me The Knife’. "A Passenger" tickles every time thanks to its rhythmically interesting arrangement. Overall JOHNOSSI have created another great album that will get some spins over here and I recomend that you let this record loose on your turntable aswell.

Today's tune "Give Me The Knife" is taken from "Mad Gone Wild", enjoy!

Camouflage - Love Is A Shield

Sunday, time for a classic. "Love Is A Shield" is a tune taken from "Methods Of Silence", the second album by the German band CAMOUFLAGE, released by Atlantic Records in June 1989. The single "Love Is A Shield" reached position 9 of the German single charts making it CAMOUFLAGE's most successful song.

CAMOUFLAGE is a German synth-pop trio consisting of lead singer Marcus Meyn, Heiko Maile and Oliver Kreyssig.

CAMOUFLAGE set up a new studio, "Boys Factory 2", near their home town before entering the Synsound Studio in Brussels in early 1989 to create "Methods Of Silence". The producer, Dan Lacksman (known for his work with TELEX), used both modern and old technology to create the new album. The band was given more creative freedom due to their previous success.

A review by Allmusic wrote that the album's "material contrasted sharply with the vibrancy of the ensuing decade" referring to the decline of the Synthpop genre at the beginning of the 1990s. The albums was however noted for its sonic precision and a reliance on pop-song structures.

Enjoy today's classic!

Thunder - The Western Sky

Fifty years and counting since singer Danny Bowes met guitarist Luke Morley, and three decades since they founded the British rock giants THUNDER, the south London fivesome are releasing their magnum opus. The band’s first double album, "Dopamine", delivers 16 new tracks that cover a world of musical territory. Too vital to be simply labelled veterans, too varied in style to be just another classic rock band, THUNDER are at their very peak of their considerable form, as evidenced by the wealth of light and shade on "Dopamine".

"Dopamine" follows on from 2021’s return to the full-throttle sound of THUNDER, "All The Right Noises" which continued their consecutive Top 10 UK Album Chart run at No.3, since their ecstatically received comeback seven years ago. It is another chapter in the band’s incredible history that has seen them create a succession of some of the most highly regarded rock albums of the past 30 years. The key to their renown: brilliantly conceived top-drawer material. THUNDER is the last of the true British rock giants.

The line up on this album is Luke Morley, Danny Bowes, Chris Childs, Ben Matthews and Harry James. The record was recorded at Rockfield & Vada studios and mixed by Mike Fraser.

Today's tune "The Western Sky" is taken from THUNDER’s new album "Dopamine". Which will be released on 29th April 2022 on BMG.

Heavy Water - Red Brick City

HEAVY WATER, which features SAXONS Biff Byford and his son Seb Byford, are to release their debut album "Red Brick City" on July 23rd 2021 via Silver Lining Music. The album features ten songs and takes you on a journey through influences and invention, which has you hooked from the first note.

That rock and singing runs in the family is clear in the Byford camp, both the heavy metal father Biff with a marvelous vocals along with his son that also posses the gift as a brilliant singer Byford Junior is.

"Red Brick City" is very obviously the product of lockdown frustration, an album that turned out to be a great output, nothing lightweight about these songs, nor anything frivolous or throwaway about its sound.

Slathered in classic Rock ‘n’ Roll soul and soaked in gritty, hard-baked riffs, and topped off with rich, raunchy vocals… Welcome to HEAVY WATER and their debut album "Red Brick City".

The foundations for HEAVY WATER’s sound are set in both that incredible father/son chemistry and a lifetime of know-how and experiences. Take the title track -and first single- "Red Brick City": all steam and smoulder wrapped around a riff SOUNDGARDEN would’ve been proud of.

“We decided to do something together in these dark times and the family came together to help get this album off the ground” explained Seb and Biff.

Seb Byford recorded and engineered "Red Brick City" at the Big Silver Barn in York, UK, while the drums were recorded by Ben Hammond at Reel Recording Studio in York. Seb produced the album with Biff, and Jacky Lehmann mastered. "Red Brick City" sees Seb take the reins on guitar and vocals, with Biff taking up the bass and vocal mantle. Tom Witts plays the drums, while Dave Kemp rounds out the Heavy Water line-up on keyboards and saxophone. A rich, lustrous ride through profoundly rewarding rock waters. To cap off this family affair, the packaging photos were taken by Steph Byford.

“We had great fun doing this album, working together on the songs and recording during lockdown,” concluded Biff and Seb. “It’s all recorded without samples or profiles... just loud and proud!”

Today's tune "Red Brick City" it the title tune from this album, enjoy!

Poppy - Fear Of Dying

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Fear Of Dying" is a song by the American rock band JACK OFF JILL from Fort Lauderdale, Florida founded in 1992 by vocalist Jessicka, drummer Tenni Ah-Cha-Cha, Agent Moulder, and guitarist Michelle Inhell. Though these four women were the initial founders, nine members rotated through the group in its life-span, including Scott Putesky, guitarist and co-founder of Marilyn Manson. The band lasted three years, with only Jessicka remaining throughout, then reunited in 2015 for a number of shows.

The tune was released on the second and final studio album "Clear Hearts Grey Flowers". Produced by Chris Vrenna of NINE INCH NAILS/TWEAKER, it was released in July 2000 on the now-defunct label Risk Records. After "Clear Hearts Grey Flowers" the band formally split up and moved on to establish other projects.

Today's version is made by POPPY, the cover mainly keeps in line with the original song. However, POPPY’s unique voice shines through on her reimagining of the track. Heavy guitar riffs combine with POPPY’s gritty vocals and occasional screams to make a modern headbanging version of the song.

Moriah Rose Pereira, professionally known as POPPY, is an American singer-songwriter, director, producer, author, actress, dancer, model and YouTuber.

POPPY has gone everywhere, from the metal stylings of “Concrete” and Grimes collab “Play Destroy,” to the pop-critiquing acoustic track “Pop Music.” With her first new music of the year, “Fear Of Dying” shows that POPPY will always unabashedly experiment with her sound as an artist. That sentiment is reflected in the very song she chose to cover, with lyrics about not being afraid of speaking your mind and try your best.

“I think artists come in all forms, and you are a product of your own influence,” POPPY said in her debut Alternative Press cover with Ghostemane in 2020. “I make it my mission every day to try and learn something or try something new because you’re only here on Earth for a short time, and I just think that it’s important to keep pushing yourself and your boundaries and where you think that you can go and surprising yourself. Otherwise, you get boring. At least for me, I feel really bored. I don’t really look around at other artists and think that it’s disappointing. Everyone has their own path. I can only speak for myself, that I can get very bored if I’m not trying to constantly learn something."

Today's tune "Fear Of Dying", a pretty faithful cover of JACK OFF JILL’s tune. A song that laid the groundwork for POPPY to remain on the heavier side but eventually release more harder rock tracks with melody. It was released as a single on May 26th, 2021.

Idles - Crawl! (DGG Edit)

IDLES are back with a brand new video for the song "Crawl!", see it below. The tune is taken from one of the many highlights of last year’s Top charting record "Crawler".

The video was directed by LOOSE and Edie Lawrence, the claymation video follows frontman Joe Talbot on a motorcycle ride through the desert as his flesh withers down to the bone.

IDLES’ fourth studio record "Crawler" was released last fall and cemented their status as one of the most important bands making music today. The record was produced by lead guitarist Mark Bowen alongside Kenny Beats and marked a real turning point in the evolution of the band, adding a whole new dimension to the music the Bristolian five piece make.

Singer Joe Talbot writes candid and poetic lyrics that deal with the harsh realities of addiction and the process of recovery that can ensue. On ‘Crawl!’, he says “this is the turning point, after you’ve crashed. It’s a good anthem for me to discuss with people who aren’t on the other side or who aren’t sober".

VoiVod - Synchro Anarchy

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Four decades, it's a long time of survival, something that few bands can handle. The French Canadians VOIVOD is one of them that continue to put out material that still keeps a high-quality stamp year after year. Amazing and very powerful and yet follow the trail of development from early origins of Punk, via trash path to the more progressive and technical ground where they are atm, a band that always played by their own rules.

"Synchro Anarchy" is the band's 15th studio release and, as fans have come to expect, it is yet is again an incomparable concoction of wild, quirky, and imaginative heaviness. Absolutely wonderful and not a hint of predictability. This record feels very well made, where the band has taken their time to create a proper album without letting go of the reins. Nine tunes that clock in just under fifty minutes.

The album opens up with "Paranormalium" where bizarre riffs and quirky tempos just fall in to the of VOIVOD's trademark. The melodic layers of 70s psychedelia and 80s thrash metal and progressive metal which creates a fun and very enjoyable foundation for Denis "Snake" Bélanger’s nasal vocal who marries in a nice way. The following title tune and "Planet Eaters" continues in the same path of oddly charming and great arrangements which creates a magical flow in the listening nerve. "Mind Clock" opens up with some half paced guitar picks, that slowly build up and the speed incres and the punk attitude winds its way in. The guitar friendly piece "Sleeves Off" has a great groove, partly Scandinavian garage rock mixed up with some MASTEDON progginess. "Holographic Thinking" is a catchy tune with some cool riffing and it's followed by the bass heavy "The World Today" with it's surf-rock vibe gives the album some spice and the bassist Rocky gets the spotlight. The album closes up with "Memory Failure" that wraps up the bag with some heavy riffing and thunderous drums and well written lyrics. "Synchro Anarchy" is a really nice album from the band, well worth the time you will spend with VOIVOD, an album that increase dramatically after each listen. The album was produced by Francis Perron. Released by Century Media Records on February 11th, 2022.

Sum: “Synchro Anarchy” is a great thrashed progressive metal album, get it!

VOïVOD is:
Drums: Michel “Away” Langevin
Voice: Denis “Snake” Belanger
Guitar & backing vocalist: Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain
Bass & backing vocalist: Dominic “Rocky” Laroche

Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart

Sunday, time for a cover.

"Kickstart My Heart" is a song by American heavy metal band MÖTLEY CRÜE, originally released on their 1989 album, "Dr. Feelgood". Released as the album's second single in 1989. The track has been used in various media, and was also included on the soundtrack album to the 2019 biographical film "The Dirt" and the official trailer of Battlefield 2042 remixed by 2WEI.

In a 2015 interview, MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx related the origins of "Kickstart My Heart,” which he wrote while the band was already working on "Dr. Feelgood". Sixx was playing acoustic guitar in his house while scribbling words on a piece of paper. When the group’s former manager read the words, he encouraged Sixx to share it with the rest of the band. Sixx was reluctant, but eventually did show the band and the track came together quickly. The phrase "kickstart my heart" supposedly refers to Sixx's overdose incident where a paramedic injected his heart with adrenaline; GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler disputes the accuracy of the story, saying he revived Sixx before the paramedics arrived. The introduction is a classic example of a Floyd Rose bridge trick, in which Mick Mars drops three consecutive strings resulting in sound similar to a motorcycle shifting gears. The song's ending features a prominent example of talkbox effects.

The video clip was shot at the Whisky a Go Go on October 5, 1989 during MÖTLEY CRÜE's warm-up show before embarking on the "Dr. Feelgood" world tour. Sam Kinison is featured at the start of the video chauffeuring the band to the Whisky in a 1946 Buick ambulance.

As part of their cross-promotion with the MÖTLEY CRÜE Final Tour and to celebrate the song's 25th anniversary in 2014, Dodge remixed the music video, replacing some of the action scenes with footage of Dodge's performance cars on the track.

Today's tune "Kickstart My Heart", taken from the album "Dr. Feelgood", enjoy!

Muse - Won't Stand Down

"Won't Stand Down" (stylized in all uppercase) is a song by English rock band MUSE, it's the return of the band, the first new track in nearly four years. Released as a single on 13 January 2022, it is the first single from their as-of-yet-untitled upcoming ninth studio album.

On 25 December 2021, MUSE lead singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy held a brief livestream on the official MUSE Instagram account. In the video, he can be seen driving his Tesla on Autopilot mode, with his 10-year-old son Bing in the passenger seat. The pair are listening (and, in Bing's case, headbanging) to a then-unreleased MUSE song, entitled "Won't Stand Down" on the car stereo screen, while Matt provides occasional commentary over the track. In total, the livestream previewed a roughly one-minute-long section of the song. MUSE's own Instagram account hinted towards the release of a new single in a post on 31 December, initially uploaded with the caption "Looking forward to WSD. We'll see you on the other side!" before "WSD" was changed to "2022" after a few minutes.

According to vocalist and guitarist Matt Bellamy, "'Won't Stand Down' is a song about standing your ground against bullies, whether that be on the playground, at work or anywhere."

The digital artwork for "Won't Stand Down" was described as "dark and ominous", featuring a hooded priest-like figure hovering over ten disciples, figures wearing digital-style masks and gothic chandeliers. The video for “Won’t Stand Down” was directed by Jared Hogan and filmed in Kiev, Ukraine. While the new single didn’t arrive with the announcement of a new Muse LP, a release promises that the band is “currently working on more new music.”

Today's tune "Won't Stand Down", taken from the upcoming album, the song is the heaviest material yet by the band.
