Miserable - Damned To Love You

That you got a taste of Kristina Esfandiari (WHIRR, KING WOMAN) other projects after yesterday's review is not entirely surprising, for it was so good and I just felt in love with her :) and needed to get more, I'mm sure you know that feeling.

MISERABLE is an a where we finds her at her most vulnerable and emotional. Oscillating between shoegaze and dream pop, her music dwells in a soft, meditative space that reverberates with thoughtfulness.

Today's tune "Damned To Love You" is a single released February 27, 2020. Kristina Esfandiari voice scales cresting waves of nostalgia, buoyed by plucked guitar arpeggios drenched in 60’s style spring reverb. Just wonderful, enjoy!

King Woman – Celestial Blues

Monday, time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Celestial Blues" is the sophomore album by KING WOMAN. Led by the hypnotic and breathy vocal dramatics of Kris Esfandiari. KING WOMAN unveil a profoundly crafted opus of brooding, ethereal doom-rock. Produced by Jack Shirley (DEAFHEAVEN, WRECK & REFERENCE, OATHBREAKER).

Feeling compelled to reshape the biblical archetypes that once bound her, Esfandiari has created a theatrical tale of rebellion, tragedy, and triumph — a metaphor for her own personal experiences over the years — "Celestial Blues" was born. The former’s name refers to Lucifer himself, taking root in a John Milton-ish humanization of the Biblical adversary.

Esfandiari has written an epic poem in blank verse where the dramatic tone for the record is set with "Morning Star" where "Lucifer, falling from the heights" with an primeval echo in the heavy riffs by Peter Arsendorf that played both bass and guitar on the album in the absence of former guitarist Colin Gallagher and drums beaten with a firm handshake by Joey Raygoza. "Boghz" is about the delicate line between love and drugs. Beautiful-sounding tones begin "Golgotha" which invites to some gymnastics choirs, laze distorted guitars and violins that try to hide the bloody lyrics. "Coil" is a massive wall of big sounds in this punkish gospel. "Entwined" starts nicely at a low tide pace, only when halfway has been passed, it break loose and she sings "I've been fucking around my whole life, No more". In "Psychic Wound" she get enslaved by the pinions under seductive rule. The music surrounds in a horror theme around her screams. A bass line lick opens up "Ruse" is another story of betrayal in the sense of intoxication. The album closes really beautiful in "Paradise Lost" where the inspiration is taken from John Milton epic poem, a neat guitar and soft drums along with a naked and soulful vocals makes me shiver. "Celestial Blues" is marvelous and so different, as the lyrics is very important to understand it's composition and meaning, the music frames up the story very well. Highly recomend to spin this with headphones.

"Celestial Blues" was recorded in Oakland, California by GRAMMY-nominated engineer Jack Shirley (DEAFHEAVEN, WRECK & REFERENCE, ANENRA, OATHBREAKER). Released July 30, 2021 by Relapse Records

Sum: "Celestial Blues" is one of the year's most evocative records.

Today's tune "Morning Star", taken from "Celestial Blues", The video is pretty creepy and get's me think about Marilyn Manson, could this be his sister???, well enjoy!

Mavis Staples - Change

For over six decades, Mavis Staples has spoken out against injustices with her music and activism. Both as a solo artist and a member of the legendary THE STAPLE SINGERS, Staples has made countless contributions to the canon of socially conscious music.

Still going strong at 82 years of age, she released the album, “Live in London,” on February 8, 2019. A follow-up, “We Get By,” on May 24, 2019 were we pick today's tune "Change" from, the album’s lead single is a bluesy call to action which highlights issues such as inequality and gun violence (“Fingers on the trigger around here/ Bullets flying, mothers crying / We gotta change around here”).

Mavis Staples is an important artist whose music bridges the gap between the past and present. She continues to pave the way for current and future generations of socially conscious musicians.

During the album release she released a statement, Staples said, "These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better."

The album's cover features the photograph "Outside Looking In" by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden.

Etta James - Miss You

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Miss You" is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was released as a single by THE ROLLING STONES in May 1978, one month in advance of their album "Some Girls", and peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart.

"Miss You" was written by Mick Jagger jamming with keyboardist Billy Preston during rehearsals for the March 1977 El Mocambo club gigs, recordings from which appeared on side three of double live album "Love You Live" (1977). Keith Richards is credited as co-writer as was the case for all Rolling Stones originals written by either partner or in tandem.

Jagger and Ronnie Wood insist that "Miss You" wasn't conceived as a disco song, while Richards said, "'Miss You' was a damn good disco record; it was calculated to be one." In any case, what was going on in discotheques did make it to the recording. Charlie Watts said, "A lot of those songs like 'Miss You' on 'Some Girls' ... were heavily influenced by going to the discos. You can hear it in a lot of those four-to-the-floor and the Philadelphia-style drumming."

For the bass part, Bill Wyman started from Preston's bass guitar on the song demo. Chris Kimsey, who engineered the recording, said Wyman went "to quite a few clubs before he got that bass line sorted out", which Kimsey said "made that song". Wyman recalled: "When I did the riff for 'Miss You' – which made the song, and every band in the world copied it for the next year: Rod Stewart, all of them – it still said Jagger/Richard. When I wrote the riff for 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', it became Jagger/Richard, and that's the way it was. It just became part and parcel of the way the band functioned."

Unlike most of Some Girls, "Miss You" features several studio musicians. In addition to Sugar Blue who, according to Wood, was found by Jagger busking on the streets of Paris, Ian McLagan plays understated Wurlitzer electric piano, and Mel Collins provides the tenor saxophone solo for the instrumental break.

Today's tune "Miss You" is made by the American singer Etta James. The tempo of "Miss You" is slowed down to a "sensual simmer" and she does it so good, so good! The tune was on her twenty-fourth studio album "Matriarch Of The Blues", released in December 2000 through the record label Private Music.

The Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues

Another legend has left us, Charlie Watts, THE ROLLING STONES drummer who propelled the band’s sound for nearly 60 years, has died aged 80.

A statement from his London publicist, Bernard Doherty, to the PA Media news agency said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts."

“He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”

Charlie originally trained as a graphic artist, he started playing drums in London's rhythm and blues clubs, where he met Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards. In January 1963, he joined their fledgling group, THE ROLLING STONES, as drummer, while doubling as designer of their record sleeves and tour stages. Watts, along with Jagger and Richards, were the only band members to have been featured on all of their studio albums. He cited jazz as a major influence on his drumming style. He toured with his own group, the Charlie Watts Quintet, and appeared in London at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with the Charlie Watts Tentet.

In 2006, Watts was elected into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame; in the same year, Vanity Fair elected him into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame. In the estimation of noted music critic Robert Christgau, Watts was "rock's greatest drummer." In 2016, he was ranked 12th on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time" list.

Always using a straightforward four-drum setup – positively minimalist compared with the multi-instrument setups favoured by many rock groups – he gave THE ROLLING STONES propulsive, unfussy backbeats on every one of their studio albums, beginning with their self-titled 1964 debut. “I don’t like drum solos,” he once said. “I admire some people that do them, but generally I prefer drummers playing with the band. The challenge with rock’n’roll is the regularity of it. My thing is to make it a dance sound – it should swing and bounce.”

To remember Charlie I thought that we pick a tune where we can hear his finest drumming and got "Stray Cat Blues" in mind, a tune from the 1968 album "Beggars Banquet". The clip i found is from the fifth and final leg of the Bridges To Babylon Tour, at Weserstadion on September 2, 1998.

The Skull - The Longing

Today it's a sad day, Eric Wagner has passed away, he died of complications from COVID-19 on August 22, 2021, at age 62 in Las Vegas.

Eric Wagner (April 24, 1959 – August 22, 2021) was an American heavy metal singer who is best known for his work with the doom metal band TROUBLE, which he formed in 1979. He briefly left TROUBLE in the mid-1990s and formed LID with guitarist Danny Cavanagh, resulting in 1997's "In The Mushroom". He also appeared on Dave Grohl's heavy metal side project PROBOT in 2004 with the song "My Tortured Soul".

Wagner rejoined TROUBLE in 2000, and recorded one more album with them, "Simple Mind Condition" (2007), before leaving the band once again in May 2008 to pursue other musical interests and projects.

Wagner had also been recording under the band name BLACKFINGER. He also formed THE SKULL, which features former TROUBLE bassist Ron Holzner and drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson. The band's name is derived from TROUBLEs second album "The Skull".

To remember Eric Wagner we pick a tune from his latest project THE SKULL.

Today's tune "The Longing" is taken from THE SKULLs second album "The Endless Road Turns Dark", released 2018, enjoy!

Wolves In Haze - Chaos Reigns

Monday, a new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Swedish and Gothenburg-based heavy rock/doom metal band WOLVES IN HAZE will drop their second full-length album "Chaos Reigns", on Sept. 3 through Majestic Mountain and Tvåtakt Records. WOLVES IN HAZE was formed in 2014 and release their self-titled debut in 2016.

WOLVES IN HAZE is a new acquaintance, but after playing the promo I must say that I am very impressed.

"Chaos Reigns" opens up with "Green River Speaks", sea breeze, drums, and a black roar from the underworld start up the album until the thick guitars kick in. The vocals of guitarist Manne Olander is rough, melodic, and very comfortable and gives the steam roller exactly the lubrication it needs for impeccable rolling. The guitars of Manne Olander and Olle Hansson sound really nice and it's very difficult to stay away from playing air guitar. The rhythm section of the drummer and bassist Kalle Lilja gives the tune a great mix. At the first spin before I read all the intel about this I thought it was Feffe Berglund, singer from BOMBUS behind the microphone as they sound very similar at first sight. Nothing bad at all, love Feffe and now I love Manne. "Way In Haze" follows up with more furious guitar work in a very melodic way. The vocals are more strained, slightly pissed off but controlled and work out really good in this smasher. Followed up by "In Fire" where the tempo is screwed up a notch with a much harder and rawer approach, punkish, almost hardcore in a mix of REFUSED and RAISED FIST, to refer to some Swedish bands. In "The Night Stalker" drags WOLVES IN HAZE you down a filthy path of raucously raw, death metal-infused rock and bloody roll. Old school death metal riffs and some abysmal vocal parts by the guest singer Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES), the result is unexpected and very good. The heaviness continues in "Tormentor" where they pick the influences from the past. Halfway thru the album and it's time to slows down in "My Destroyer", where acoustic guitars along with a soulful duo vocal between a man and a woman that both are lurking in danger. The guest female vocalist is Martina Svärd from the Swedish psychedelic rock band TORNET. A beautiful piece to recharge the batteries for the next part of the album. With a steady attitude, we move on to "Beyond Perception", a dreamy melodic but still very riff-based. "Into The Grave" serves us a high tempo and power riffing piece which changes to more dirty punkish rock in "Heat Of The Moment" to then pull up collar a notch and invite us to a melodic riff party "Breath In The Night" until we reaches the end and it's time for the title track "Chaos Reigns" to tie this album together and end this in a completely magical way, an instrumental piece where they pick all the best pieces of their own creation and lets the instruments speak, where the chaos must be overcome at all costs and when we reach the crescendo by an electric force and evil has been defeated and a silence arises and chaos ceases to rule.

This is an excellent album, it's dirty, heavy, doomy, and punky! Really well-made album. Give it a spin and I promise you! Once it spins for you, it will drag you down to its chaotic journey!

"Chaos Reigns" is produced, recorded & mixed by Kalle Lilja & Per Stålberg at Welfare Sounds. Assisting engineering by Olle Björk. Mastered by Daniel Johansson at Welfare Sounds Mastering. The band is strengthened up with the bassist Emil Rolof to be a full four-piece band.

Pre-order the album here: https://majesticmountainrecords.bigcartel.com/product/wolves-in-haze-chaos-reigns the Vinyl copies are limited to 300 so be quick, I got one so I hope you will!

Members:
Guitar/vox: Manne Olander (DEADHEADS, THE SACRED SAILORS)
Guitar/backing vox: Olle Hansson (THE SACRED SAILORS)

Masters Of Reality - She Got Me( When She Got Her Dress On)

Sunday, time for a classic!

"She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)" is a tune taken from the second studio album "Sunrise On The Sufferbus" by American rock band MASTERS OF REALITY, released in 1992.

The band formed in 1981 by frontman Chris Goss and guitarist Tim Harrington in Syracuse, New York, United States. They took the name for the band from a misprinted label of the third BLACK SABBATH album. Goss has remained the only constant band member.

The band's music has touched on many styles, ranging from hard rock to blues, from progressive rock to Beatlesque pop music. The band is sometimes associated with the "Palm Desert Scene", which includes bands like KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and many other stoner rock and "desert rock" bands.

In 1992 Goss and Googe resurfaced, now with Ginger Baker (formerly of CREAM) on drums. The new album "Sunrise On The Sufferbus" spawned a Top 10 rock chart hit with the single "She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)", see it below. An album cut sometimes used by American radio shows when they have a British guest is "T.U.S.A.", a rap by Baker describing the inability of Americans to make a proper cup of tea. Baker left the band after a few years and was replaced by Victor Indrizzo (of CIRCUS OF POWER and SAMIAM).

Enjoy today's classic!

Ifred - Svarta Lådan

Friday, today we open the door and let in some Swedish pop. That pop music is played here is not common. That we take a side track and offer something that does not belong to the ordinary is something that happens more and more often. I see it as a positive light in the dark, I really hope you who follow this musical journey agree.

The artist and songwriter Fredrik Dagvik grew up outside Gothenburg and has spent his childhood in various rehearsal rooms and band constellations. Now he writes his own music and releases it under the artist name in iFred (InPeace). Recently, the new single "Svarta Lådan" (The Black Box) was released.

The single is an indie pop-rock song with piano melodies, pleasant drum accompaniment and playful guitars, the lyrics are in Swedish.

Fredrik Dagvik explain the tune:

“The song is about how we in our inner black box save and memorize everything we have done and all the choices we have made in life. Now when I look back in the rearview mirror, I see how "chance" and how different factors have affected me. The song is a kind of monologue of "the one" I was when I was young. Did everything turn out as I had imagined? Is this how I wanted everything to be? ”

Enjoy today's tune "Svarta Lådan", written by Fredrik Dagvik, released Aug 6th 2021.

Sonic Youth - Superstar

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell with a songwriting credit also given to Delaney Bramlett that has been a hit for many artists in different genres and interpretations in the years since; the best-known versions are by the CARPENTERS in 1971, and by Luther Vandross in 1983.

The band SONIC YOUTH, which had always found inspiration from the CARPENTERS, recorded a version of the selection for the 1994 tribute album "If I Were a Carpenter". This version was also later included on the soundtrack for the 2007 film "Juno". It was also featured in the film "The Frighteners" and in the theatrical trailer for "High Tension". It likewise appeared in professional skateboarder Jerry Hsu's part in "Bag Of Suck". On a November 28, 2009 transmission of the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air", Richard Carpenter expressed his distaste for this version.

SONIC YOUTH was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and Mark Ibold (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.

SONIC YOUTH emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Sonic Youth have been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do" using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings while preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre. The band was a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements.

After gaining a large underground following and critical praise through releases with SST Records in the late 1980s, the band experienced mainstream success throughout the 1990s and 2000s after signing to major label DGC in 1990 and headlining the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. In 2011, following the separation and subsequent divorce of Gordon and Moore, the band played their final shows in Brazil.[2][3] Since the split, the members have said the band is finished and would not reunite.

Today's tune "Superstar" by SONIC YOUTH, enjoy!

Bror Gunnar Jansson - Eat Me

The Swedish gothic blues rocker Bror Gunnar Jansson is back with some new tunes and have a new album in the pipeline "Faceless Evil, Nameless Fear" that is set to be released September 24th.

Whether he’s all alone or together with a band, on a stage or on records Bror Gunnar Jansson unleashes his unique blend of southern gothic, blues, stoner, folk, psych and more! He’s been touring and releasing records for quite a few years now and you have been able to hear his music in movies and tv series such as “The last days of American crime”, “Happy” and “Damnation”. He has performed a number of times in both swedish and french national TV shows (such as “Album de la semaine” and “På Spåret”).

Bror Gunnar Jansson (and yes that is his real name) was introduced to the great worlds of music before he even was born. He is, together with his sister, the fourth generation of musicians in his bloodline. His father is a well renowned bass player who toured with jazz legends such as Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Dexter Gordon and Monica Zetterlund.

With the start of 2021 Bror Gunnar returned once again to the studio (Elementstudion in Göteborg) to record a new album "Faceless Evil, Nameless Fear" which will be released in September 24th, 2021 started with the single "Spray It!" May 21. With this album Bror Gunnar is spinning a tale of corrupt police officers, grim murders, weird deaths, diseases and even love! Jumping between our real world and his own dark universe.

A few days ago, Friday 13th to be more excat he released his latest single "Eat Me!" and is probably the most ridiculous song he ever written - at least so far! regarding to him self that he says on his social media. The song is about a person who takes the expression “you are what you eat” way too seriously. In order not to become someone else the person eats oneself and also offers others to take part of the "smörgåsbord". Swedish listeners can probably hear the musical reference to one of Jojje Wadenius most famous children’s songs.

So for today we have his new excellent single "Eat Me!" as today's tune, taken from the upcoming album "Faceless Evil, Nameless Fear", enjoy!

Here is a clip from a live performance at Pustervik, Gothenburg.

The Armed - All Futures

The Detroit collective THE ARMED returned on April 16, 2021 with their first new album in over three years and Sargent House debut, "Ultrapop". The album reaches the same extremities of sonic expression as the furthest depths of metal, noise, and otherwise "heavy" counterculture music subgenres but finds its foundation firmly in pop music and pop culture.

As is always THE ARMEDs mission, it seeks only to create the most intense experience possible, a magnification of all culture, beauty, and things. The band goes on to explain, "crafting vital art means presenting the audience with new and intriguing tensions—sonically, visually, conceptually. Over time and through use, those tensions become less novel and effective—and they become expectations. The concept of "subgenre" becomes almost the antithesis of vitality in art—itself a fetishization of expectation. "Ultrapop" seeks, in earnest, to create a truly new listener experience. It is an open rebellion against the culture of expectation in "heavy" music. It is a joyous, genderless, post-nihilist, anti-punk, razor-focused take on creating the most intense listener experience possible. It's the harshest, most beautiful, most hideous thing we could make."

Today's tune "All Futures", that was the first single from the band’s third album "Ultrapop". The tune is melodic, technical, squelchy—it features Troy Van Leeuwen from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. The video clip comes with a live performance that sounds basically the exact same as the studio version and gives you a hint of how talent they are. "Ultrapop" was released April 16, 2021 on Sargent House. Recorded by Chris Koltay, Drum Engineering by Urian Hackney, Mixed by Kurt Ballou and Mastered by Zach Weeks. Enjoy!

Genghis Tron - Dream Weapon

Monday, new week, time for us to present "Record Of The Week".

The Poughkeepsie, New Yorkers GENGHIS TRON make their return with their highly anticipated new album, "Dream Weapon". The band’s first new studio outing in over a decade, GENGHIS TRON's Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky are now joined by two new collaborators: vocalist Tony Wolski and SUMAC/BAPTISTS drummer Nick Yacyshyn. Together, the lineup perfects the unique mix of extreme rock and electronic music GENGHIS TRON has pioneered over their storied career. A melding of hypnotic rhythms and densely layered synth soundscapes, "Dream Weapon" was recorded and produced alongside long-time collaborator Kurt Ballou at God City Studio in Salem, Massachusetts, with additional production and engineering by Ben Chisolm (Chelsea Wolfe) and JJ Heath (RAIN CITY RECORDERS).

"Dream Weapon" is an interesting journey, and I must say that I really dig this a bit far out way to create music, where all the best pieces are put together in a marvelous mix. Lyrically and conceptually, "Dream Weapon" picks up where "Board Up The House" left off. With this album there are some new elements were introduced, the trance-like repetition that during the time gets very meditative and hypnotic, very loosely, an album-length meditation on that theme.

From the short instrumental introduction in the opener "Exit Perfect Mind" makes the way for the first electronic chapter "Pyrocene" and in here we get the first notice of the changes in the personnel of the band that I find very positive and suits this new step away from the metal genre. The title tune is more bombastic and chaotic with a hell of a drum performance witch overall is a marvelous tune. To cool things off a bit the band offers a two minutes interlude with "Desert Stairs" that is like the aftermath of the tornado that exhales and the follows up by the seven minutes "Alone In The Heart Of The Light" that serves us with an atmospheric and electronic color palette that paints up the vivid landscape of the day after tomorrow. "Ritual Circle" is the longest piece on the album with its ten minutes adventurous journey and feels like it continues the previous track and gives it a proper ending to be followed up by the progressive "Single Black Point" until it's time to wrap up the album with the closer "Great Mother", a big and powerful piece that shifts from beautiful passages into noisy walls of distorted guitars. The album is a very good one and I find this to be a very exciting and interesting piece of art and it also tells us that GENGHIS TRON has grown up and entered a more focused state. "Dream Weapon" was released on 26 March 2021, by Relapse.

Sum: "Dream Weapon" is a genre-defying innovation, highly recommended.

Today's tune is the title track from "Dream Weapon", enjoy!
