Centinex - Beyond The Dark

CENTINEX originated in 1990 as a riff-oriented part of the classic Swedish death metal movement and disbanded in 2005 after releasing eight full-length albums. In 2014 they resurfaced, quite surprisingly, and with a refreshed line-up, delivered their celebrated come-back record, "Redeeming Filth". The next album was inevitable and didn't take another decade to assemble. Having released "Doomsday Rituals" in 2016, the band played a run of shows in Europe and North America, before encapsulating their sheer Swedish brutality in a new offering. "Death In Pieces", the long-runner's third reunion album, is brimmed with a powerful doze of old-school, Stockholm-style death metal, and takes the band's signature heavy riffling to a whole new level of intensity.

The band commented: "We are very excited to finally have this new killer CENTINEX album recorded and ready to be released! As some of you have noticed, due to various reasons the band has kept a bit of low profile during the last years, so now it feels great to be back on track with this intense slap of death metal brutality featuring a new hungry and dedicated line-up!".

"Death In Pieces" was recorded by CENTINEX and Johan Hjelm at Wellbay Studios. The album was mixed and mastered by Ronnie Bjornstrom at Enhanced Audio Productions (Aeon, Bodyfarm, Meshuggah), while the artwork that graces the cover was created by Bahrull Marta.

CENTINEX line-up:
Henka Andersson – vocals
Jorgen Kristensen – guitars
Martin Schulman – bass
Florian Rehn – drums

Lantern – Strange Nebula

"Dimensions" is the third album and follow-up to 2017's "II: Morphosis" sees LANTERN continuing on their unique path blending eerie melodies with and top notch riffs capped off by the one-of-a-kind vocals of Necrophilos. LANTERN is hailing from Kuopio, Pohjois-Savo, Finland.

LANTERN mixes thrash, death metal, and black metal into a pot and create a raw and dirty soundscape that sounds really old school where influenses could be BATHORY and DARKTHRONE. So give it a spin and hear if this might appeal to you.

The marvelous cover artwork is done by Timo Kokko. "Dimensions" is mixed and mastered by Dan Lowndes at Resonance Sound Studio.

LANTERN are:
Cruciatus - Guitars, Bass, Drums,
Necrophilos - Vocals,
J. Poussu - Drums,
St. Belial - Guitars

Today's tune "Strange Nebula" is taken from "Dimensions", released worldwide on July 10th, 2020 by Dark Descent Records

Lik - Misanthropic Breed

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Misanthropic Breed" is the third full-length album by the Swedish death metal band LIK (the Swedish word for "corpse").

A band that continues to develop in a controlled manner on the Swedish bloodsoaked corpses. Since their debut album "Mass Funeral Evocation" in 2015 and "Carnage" in 2018 they have impressed us with raw, angry, old school death metal.

"Misanthropic Breed" is 11 tunes with a spin time of 39 minutes and gives you as a listner the best possible old school Swedish death metal in present time. The album is very enjoyable collection of energy, from the opening screams in "The Weird" kick start the album in a high tempo, catchy riffing, punishing rhythms, crazy solos by Niklas ‘Nille’ Sandin, frenetic drumming of the crazy Chris Barkensjö along with a excellent growl by Tomas Åkvik. It's followed by the first single "Decay", a melodic and very catchy heartstarter with lyrics that is so brilliant "Death Metal","Screaming prayers you do not believe, Body is defiled and emptied, Another dimension to enter, Your - lobotomised faith". On the second single "Funeral Anthem" witch can be heard below serves us another catchy piece and gives some extra room for the new acquisition of the bassist Joakim “Myre” Antman that gives us some great bass licks. The album continues on the paved the track with delivery of fast paced melodic tunes with excellent riffing and high class solos all with similar quality. But when when we reach the excellent "Female Fatal To The Flesh" we get a more mid-paced, sludgy almost doomish piece. Heavy, groovy and very chuggy in the riffs shows a new level of the band. The beautiful instrumental "Misanthropic Breed" get us to the middle point of the album, wonder if they piced the album title from "Wolverine Blues" by ENTOMBED. The furyiness peaks on "Flesh Frenzy" to be moved over to the riff heavy "Morbid Fascination" and the hardcore chaotic "Wolves" that in the middle part swings with heavyness and very melodic guitars. "Faces Of Death" smacks you down awile until it's time for the album closer "Becoming", an epic piece of metal to wrap this beast up.

"Misanthropic Breed" is like a bag of "Tyrkisk Peber", black, hard, salty and very hot, put one in your mouth, suck and in the end the burning glory comes out and you can't get enough and suddenly you will notice that the bag is empty and you are craving for more, well get it another spin. Highly recommended.

Sum: Swedish Death Metal as it's best.

Tomas Åkvik - Vocals, Guitars
Chris Barkensjö - Drums, Vocals
Niklas "Nille" Sandin - Guitars
Joakim "Myre" Antman - Bass

Here is a bunch of records that I got signed from the band and a birthday greet, thanks, guys.

Today's tune "Funeral Anthem" is taken from "Misanthropic Breed", released on September 25, 2020 by Metal Blade Records. Great birthday release, enjoy it!

The Doors - Touch Me

Sunday and it's time for a classic.

As I highlighted yesterday, today's tune is picked from one of the purchased Record Store Day album from the RSD Drop 2 that was on Friday.

Here is what I got. As with a limited budget, I couln't by all the one I wanted, but still a decent pile.

The one we pick today's tune from is the fourth studio album "The Soft Parade" by the American rock band THE DOORS, released on July 18, 1969, by Elektra Records. Most of the album was recorded following a grueling tour during which the band was left with little time to compose new material. Producer Paul A. Rothchild recommended a total departure from THE DOORS' first three albums: develop a fuller sound by incorporating brass and string arrangements provided by Paul Harris. Lead singer Jim Morrison, who was dealing with personal issues and focusing more on his poetry, was less involved in the songwriting process, leaving guitarist Robby Krieger to increase his own creative output.

Today's tune "Touch Me" is a song taken from the album "The Soft Parade". Written by Robby Krieger, it is notable for its extensive usage of brass and string instruments, including a solo by featured saxophonist Curtis Amy. Ray Manzarek played harpsichord and organ on the song; he also interpolated the guitar riff from the 1967 Four Seasons song "C'mon Marianne" in his part.

It was released as a single in December 1968 and reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 (their last Top Ten hit in US) and No. 1 in the Cashbox Top 100 in early 1969 (the band's third American number-one single). The single also did well elsewhere, peaking at No. 1 in the RPM Canadian Singles Chart and at No. 10 in the Kent Music Report in Australia. However, despite the band's commercial success the previous year, "Touch Me" did not chart in the UK Singles Chart.

A remixed version with added bass and compression appeared on a 1974 compilation called Heavy Metal released via Warner Bros. Special Products. The song was released as one of the first downloadable content songs for Rock Band 3, along with several other songs by the band.

For Record Store Day, Drop 2 was a limited and numbered edition of "The Soft Parade/Stripped", pressed on vinyl for the first time and includes DOORS only mix, on all tunes, that means no orchestral on the songs. Adding both tunes below so you can see the diffrent, enjoy!

First clip is the "DOORS only Mix", audio only.

Second clip is orginal, great video from a a TV show.

Black Horns - Satan's Whore

Saturday and day after a calm birthday. Today it was time for the Recordstore Day Drop 2 where I was of course, the drop was a bit smaller than previous one, not as much peoples out and I guess the third and last drop will be even smaller. There was a great bunch of good records to get, but my budget is even smaller now than last time. As an unemployed technician, it is very poor with jobs right now, have only had some small odd jobs to keep my head above water surface. Hope this will fade away soon and jobs starts to come in so one can return to everyday life again. Anyway, I will summorize Recordstore Day tomorrow and start to work on Record Of The Week, as It got decided a few days ago.

So for today we have a tune with the French heavy rockers BLACK HORNS. The Brittany-based outfit have release their sophomore album "Second Coming" in 2020. Formed in Brest in 2012, the now trio takes its cue from the alt-heavy firepower of ALICE IN CHAINS and the rock'n'roll stampede of the likes of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE or THEM CROOKED VULTURES and of course some SABBATH, propelling themselves with a creativity and sense of direction that are the essence of great bands.

Today's tune "Satan's Whore" is taken from "Second Coming". Seriously, who has never dreamed of blasting amps with heavy riffs in the middle of the forest? Well, it‘s time for the BLACK HORNS live session, shot deep in the forest, anyway enjoy the riff!

Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song

September 25th is a day we dedicate to LED ZEPPELIN tune, one is for remembering John Bonham who passed away on 25 September 1980 and the second is that it's my birthday :) An Happy Sad day!

Today's tune is for you John!

"The Rain Song" is a song by English rock band LED ZEPPELIN, and the second track from their fifth album "Houses Of The Holy", released in 1973. "The Rain Song" is a ballad of over seven minutes in length. Guitarist Jimmy Page originally constructed the melody of this song at his home in Plumpton, England, where he had recently installed a studio mixing console. A new Vista model, it was partly made up from the Pye Mobile Studio which had been used to record the group's 1970 Royal Albert Hall performance and THE WHOs "Live At Leeds" album.

With a working title of "Slush", a reference to its easy listening simulated orchestral arrangement, Page was able to bring in a completed arrangement of the melody, for which singer Robert Plant composed the words. Plant ranks his vocal performance on the track as one of his best. The song also features a Mellotron played by John Paul Jones to add to the orchestral effect, while Page plays a Danelectro guitar.

George Harrison was reportedly the inspiration for "The Rain Song" when he made a comment to LED ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham, about the fact that the group never wrote any ballads. In Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page, biographer Brad Tolinski quotes Page:

George Harrison was talking to Bonzo one evening and said, "The problem with you guys is that you never do ballads". I said, "I'll give him a ballad", and I wrote "Rain Song", which appears on "Houses Of The Holy. In fact, you'll notice I even quote 'Something' in the song's first two chords. However, there is some disagreement about exactly what was said by whom.

During LED ZEPPELIN concerts from late 1972 until 1975, the band played this song immediately following "The Song Remains The Same", presenting the songs in the same order as they appeared on the album. They organized their set list in this manner because Page used a Gibson EDS-1275 double-necked guitar for both songs: the top, 12-string neck for "The Song Remains The Same" and then switching to the bottom, 6-string neck for "The Rain Song". Often, the band would perform the song in the key of A major, a whole step up from the studio version (as heard on "The Song Remains The Same"). The song was dropped from the 1977 U.S. tour, but returned for LED ZEPPELINs 1979 concerts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Knebworth Music Festival, as well as their European tour in 1980. "The Rain Song" was the only song from "Houses Of The Holy" performed on the 1980 European tour. In this incarnation, Page again utilized the double-neck, the only known time he used that guitar solely for the 6-string portion without using the 12-string portion on a preceding song. For all live versions of the song, the orchestral string sounds were played by Jones on either the mellotron (1972–1975) or a Yamaha synthesizer (1979–1980), as LED ZEPPELIN never utilised a string section on-stage.

Today's tune "The Rain Song" is taken from "Houses Of The Holy", enjoy!

Mantar - Can I Run

Thursday, time to shake some life in the cover session. On dark Thursdays we usually find a nice cover of a nice tune.

"Can I Run" is a tune by the American rock band L7, taken from the fourth studio album "Hungry For Stink", released by Slash Records in July 1994.

"Are these sensible shoes on my feet
I wear my shades so our eyes don't meet
I'm scared every fuckin' day
I wear my headphones so i can't hear what you say"

This is probably a song about a lonely and scared soul in a violent society.

Today's cover is made by the German rockers MANTAR, the tune is released on thier latest cover album "Grungetown Hooligans II".

MANTAR has been busy making records and touring, more or less all around the world and the absurd idea of being a "professional band" has surprisingly become real. An incredible journey, more than you could have expected after the debut "Death By Burning" 2014. Nevertheless, after five years in which the band surprisingly became a "job", you had to ask yourself how you could continue to entertain yourself in the future. Treat yourself with good clean fun, without expectations and without fixed goals. The idea of a cover album came just in time. However, it was also clear from the start that no one would need any other loveless covers from SLAYER, SABBATH or BLACK FLAG. At least MANTAR didn't need them. The songs were recorded in Hanno's living room in Gainesville, Florida, except for the drums, which where record in a studio in Hamburg to be safe. It was then mixed in the "Black Bear Studio", on eof the cornerstones of the Florida punk scene. MANTAR has always been as DIY as possible when producing their records, but with the cover songs the band wanted to go further in terms of home recording. Even back then, the term "grunge" was as silly as the words "punk" or "heavy metal", so the similar shitty title of the record was quickly found. Being super pros, the first version was deleted by mistake, so the thing now is called "Grungetown Hooligans II". It also sounds a lot "better".

Enjoy today's tune!

Influences from grunge, garage and indie rock work together for a completely overdriven, extremely fuzzy Bigmuff. Their sound is rich in noise, indie-blues and stoner-rock, with Daily Thompson's usual fuzz, wah-wah and distortion attacks, they create their individual sound of Fuzz-Desert-rock.

The trio has spent the last four years on the road. DAILY THOMPSON have already proven themselves as a certificated rock sensation during countless shows, including festivals such as the German TV WDR Rockpalast Crossroads Festival, Reeperbahn Festival, Orange Blossom Special Festival or Krach Am Bach. Night - High Tides - Distant Skies

Monday, new week, time for "Record Of The Week".

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is the fourth album from the Swedish heavy metal/hard rock band NIGHT, set for release on The Sign Records, 11th of September. The album contains nine new tracks of classic sounding rock music. "High Tide - Distant Skies" follow the band´s critically acclaimed album "Raft Of The World". If their last album was darker and had a strong proto-metal niche, the new album has much wider influences and a More is More approach. The album is built upon rhythm and melodies, and Oskar Andersson now shares the position as lead vocalist with Sammy Ouirra.

NIGHT has once again taken the help from producer Ola Ersfjord (PRIMORDIAL, TRIBULATION, HONEYMOON DISEASE, ISE). The band has stepped outside their comfort zone, something that becomes possible after taking their time both with songwriting and having a long term collaboration with their producer. NIGHT has since their last album enlisted drummer Linus Fritzson (AMBUSH). The band has spent a long time concentrating on songwriting, building trust and being able to steep outside of the box. There are more vocal arrangements, but also larger arrangements on the songs and even strings.

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is a relatively satisfying affair with thirty-seven minutes, nine excellent tunes with fine spread across the borders in the sub-genres of rock, 70's rock to heavy metal to pop psychedelia to southern rock, a great and wide pallet of rock. The album have a great quality in the production and sounds terrific, great drumming with some impressive drum solos, the guitars sounds very crisp and well slided, the bass licks follows its owner faithfully and the vocals is a bit monotonous, still very powerful and have a great flow and takes a firm grip on the tunes like a principal does over his students.

All the tunes is very catchy and have a upbeat vibe regardless of its territory. Tunes like the opening tune "Shadow Gold" that have a more melodic metal vibe, same goes with "Burning Sky". The more popish rockers "Crimson Past" reminds me of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT with Mark Knopler on guitar :) The midtempo rocker "Falling In The Black" is one of the highlights where bands like SCORPIONS comes in mind when the dual guitars take it's place. The galloping "Here In My Own" is another great cut on the album. The album ends with two great tunes of "Give Me To The Night" and "Under The Moonlight Sky" where both goes in the hard driving heavy rock way, quick and fast vocals, heavy riffage. The last tune have a very catchy chorus and a little ABBA feeling over it.

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is an excellent release by NIGHT, it's catchy and very fun and easy to listen to. The tunes are well executed and have a high standard, stunning performances by all musicians. It's a record that I highly recomend to get.

Sum: It's September and the NIGHT is back!

Lineup:
Oskar Andersson – Guitar, Vocals
Sammy Ouirra – Guitar, Vocals
Joseph Max – Bass
Linus Fritzson – Drums

Big Brother And The Holding Company - Piece Of My Heart

Sunday, time for a classic.
50 Years ago and the year 1970.

That September is a eventful month during a very musical year. On September 6 – During his final European tour, guitarist Jimi Hendrix is greeted by booing and jeering by German fans as a result of his late appearance on stage and incoherent stage performance. Bassist Billy Cox quits the tour and returns to the United States. September 17 – Jimi Hendrix makes his last appearance, with Eric Burdon & War jamming at Ronnie Scotts Club in London. Hendrix, aged 27, dies the following day from a barbiturate overdose at his London hotel. On October 4 – Janis Joplin is found dead in her bedroom in the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood. She died from a heroin overdose, at the age of 27. So today's tune is dedicated for her.

During September there was a few bands that got disbanded over various cercumstances. THE BEATLES breaka up permanently. THE NICE got disband. BONZO DOG DOO-DAH BAND splits, with reunions in 1972, 1988, and 2006. Simon & Garfunkel – both members of the duo go on to solo careers, although they have reunited and performed together numerous times since breaking up. THE TURTLES disbands (reform in 1983). Dave Clark 5 Many members would leave and new members formed 'Dave Clark & Friends' which lasted until 1973.

September was a great month for album releases.

"Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!" with THE ROLLING STONES, "Third Album" with THE JACKSON 5 got released on the 4th. "Encouraging Words" with Billy Preston, "The Byrds" with THE BYRDS, "Kiln House" with FLEETWOOD MAC, "Paranoid" with BLACK SABBATH, "After the Gold Rush" with Neil Young, "Abraxas" with SANTANA, "Idlewild South" with THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, "Beaucoups of Blues" with Ringo Starr, "Leftover Wine" with Melanie and "A Pocket Full of Miracles" with THE MIRACLES among many others.

Today's tune "Piece Of My Heart" is a romantic funk/soul love song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. The song became a bigger pop hit when recorded by BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY in 1968 with lead singer Janis Joplin. The song was taken from the group's album "Cheap Thrills", recorded in 1968 and released on Columbia Records. This four-minute, 15-second rendition made it to #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album release was the culmination of a hugely successful year for Joplin with acclaimed performances at the Monterey Pop Festival, Anderson Theater in New York, Wake For Martin Luther King Jr. (with Jimi Hendrix) in New York and on TV's prime-time The Dick Cavett Show.

The song's instrumentation was arranged by Sam Andrew, who also performed three distorted, loud guitar solos giving the song a psychedelic touch. The B-side was "Summertime". Another version had the B-side "Turtle Blues".

Franklin said in an interview that when she first heard Joplin's version on the radio, she didn't recognize it because of the vocal arrangement.[17] Noted cultural writer Ellen Willis wrote of the difference: "When Franklin sings it, it is a challenge: no matter what you do to me, I will not let you destroy my ability to be human, to love. Joplin seems rather to be saying, surely if I keep taking this, if I keep setting an example of love and forgiveness, surely he has to understand, change, give me back what I have given". In such a way, Joplin used blues conventions not to transcend pain, but "to scream it out of existence".

Until her death in 1970, "Piece of My Heart" was Joplin’s biggest chart success and best-known song. ("Me and Bobby McGee”, which Kris Kristofferson wrote, eclipsed "Piece of My Heart" when it appeared after her death in 1970. It went to #1 in 1971). "Piece Of My Heart" remains most associated with Joplin and continued to get airplay long after her death. Berns never got to hear Joplin's version, dying of a heart attack on December 30, 1967.

Enjoy today's tune and have a great Sunday!

Speed Queen - Church Avenue

Saturday, get ready for a heavy metal attack!

SPEED QUEEN from Belgium plays high speed, energetic, bitchin' heavy metal. Call it whatever you want: 80's revival, new wave of Belgian heavy metal or just straight up rock 'n roll...our amps go to eleven!

So grab your leather jacket and put on your sister's jeans, that's heavy metal if you know what I mean!

Five guys, a bar and a shitload of beer. That’s how SPEED QUEEN was formed in 2014. What started as a drunken idea soon escalated into a fast, energetic band destroying stages all over Europe (so far). A rockin’ mixture between speed and heavy metal combined with a nasty and sexy stage attitude is what you’ll get. Still, these guys stick to their guns, which in this case means alcohol.

After three years of hard work and over one hundred gigs, SPEED QUEEN released their first EP, "King Of The Road", in April 2017. It was met with many great reviews and a sold out release show. With this six track EP, SPEED QUEENs rollin’ like a freight train.

In 2019, SPEED QUEEN released a MLP, "Still On The Road", featuring two brand new songs and two hard-hitting live recordings from a show in their home town, Hamont. Physical release available from High Roller Records.

Band Members:
Thomas Kenis - Vocals
Andreas Stieglitz - Guitar
Tom Neeskens - Guitar
Lander Savelkoul - Bass
Toon Driezen - Drums

Today's tune "Church Avenue" is taken from "Still On The Road", enjoy and have a wonderful Saturday evening.

Motörhead - God Save The Queen

Thursday, time for a cover.

"God Save the Queen" is a song by the British punk rock band the SEX PISTOLS. It was released as the band's second single and was later included on their only album, "Never Mind The Bollocks", Here's the SEX PISTOLS. The song was released during Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The record's lyrics, as well as the cover, were controversial at the time, and both the BBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority refused to play the song. The original title for the song was "No Future", with the lyrics themselves being a general expression of the band's view of the monarchy or any individual or establishment commanding general obligation.

The single was released on 27 May 1977, and was regarded by many of the general public as an assault on Queen Elizabeth II and the monarchy. The song's title is taken directly from the national anthem of the United Kingdom of the same name. At the time, it was highly controversial for its equation of the queen with a "fascist regime" and for the lyric "there is no future in England's dreaming". According to Glen Matlock, who had co-written the song—although he was no longer a member of the band by the time it was released—the bass was inspired by The Move's "Fire Brigade".

Although many believe it was created because of the Silver Jubilee, the band have denied it, with Paul Cook saying that "it wasn't written specifically for the Queen's Jubilee. We weren't aware of it at the time. It wasn't a contrived effort to go out and shock everyone." Johnny Rotten has explained the lyrics as follows: "You don't write 'God Save The Queen' because you hate the English race. You write a song like that because you love them, and you're fed up with them being mistreated." He intended to evoke sympathy for the English working class and a general resentment towards the monarchy.

On 7 June 1977 — the Jubilee holiday itself — the band attempted to play the song from a boat named the Queen Elizabeth on the River Thames, near the Palace of Westminster. After a scuffle involving attendee Jah Wobble and a cameraman, 11 people, including Malcolm McLaren, the man who organised the concert, and several other members of the band's entourage, were arrested when the boat docked.

Today's version is with MOTÖRHEAD and the tune can be found on "Under Cöver", the covers compilation album, released on 1 September 2017.

Lord Vigo - At The Verge Of Time

Even as a dyed-in-the-wool heavy metal band, you can only go that far with historical or fantasy lyrics. For this very reason LORD VIGO – named after Lord Vigo von Homburg Deutschendorf from the movie "Ghostbusters II" – changed tack when it came to writing and recording "Danse de Noir" by moving away from traditional sword and sorcery subject matter in favor of retro science fiction with a tinge of film noir.

The Germans’ fourth release turned out to be a true concept album with countless narrative segments and interludes in between songs that each represents “a memory implanted into the mind of our female protagonist Nihlai, a replicant within the Blade Runner universe.

Like their famous namesake "Vigo von Homburg Deutschendorf", they are evil, loud and paranormal!

The army of angry spirits upon the Earth to deliver Epic Doom Metal with NWoBHM-guitar harmonies and scatterbrained organs. A ghostly vague chimera of sound destined to haunt you.

LORD VIGO are:
Clortho (Vinz) - Vocals, Drums,
Tony (Scoleri) - Guitar, Bass,
Zildrohar (Volguus) - Guitar, Bass,
Nunzio (Scoleri) - Guitar,
Zuul - Bass,
Ivo (Shandor) - Drums

Today's tune "At The Verge Of Time" is taken from the latest album "Danse de Noir" via High Roller Records.

Åskväder - God's Grace

Electrifying Swedish rockers ÅSKVÄDER makes thunder and lightning through music.
Well-balanced seasoning to the sound of the 90s Scandinavian rock scene mixed up with smoking hot riffs drenched in bluesy licks and catchy refrains. Adding thundering drum and bass groove with a topping consisting of elaborate vocal harmonies ÅSKVÄDER is Swedish and can be translated into 'Thunderstorm'. That says it all. No fuss, just straight Rock N Roll.

That they capture some of the influences from the legends of our time such as THE HELLACOPTERS and TURBONEGRO they manage to stay in their own lane creating their own style of rock for a new decade.

The new album takes the ÅSKVÄDER sound heard on the debut EP to a new level, "We wanted to keep true to our roots but to try to capture how we sound live for the feeling of the new album" says Martin Gut who handles the guitar, also adding "To play live is where we are at our best".

The mix was left to Robert Perhsson (Robert Perhssons Humbucker, DUNDERTÅGET, DEATH BREATH) to handle and this truly put an intense vibe to the album.

ÅSKVÄDER was formed in 2018 consisting of Erik Eriksson with his lightning speed bass grooves, August Waernelius on drumrolls, Albin Sörensson on lead vocals, and Martin Gut bending guitar strings and singing harmonies. The band hails from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Today's tune "God's Grace" is taken from ÅSKVÄDERs self-titled album, released March 13 2020 on The Sign Records, enjoy!

Gaupa - Feberdröm

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Another Swedish act to step up to the throne.

Swedish female-fronted stoner act GAUPA (lynx in Swedish) continues breaking new ground with their unique blend of doom, psychedelia, and folk. Hot on the tail of their highly revered self-titled debut, their new full-length album "Feberdröm". That the album has been a bit overshadowed, slipped behind in the pile of all album releases is a bit sad, because this is incredibly good and I can not just let this disappear in the noise. GAUPA is hailing from Falun, Sweden.

Approximately two years after the release of their self-titled EP that you can read about here when we first discovered GAUPA and the song "The Drunk Autopussy Wants To Fight You".

"Feberdröm" contains eight killer tunes that containing forceful tempos, surreal lyrics, an energetic Emma Näslund that mesmerizes us with her diverse range of vocal harmonies that partly reminds me of Björk. I just love her voice, her way of performing the poetic lyrics they have in such a way that she does, cemented with primordial pondus that sounds a bit crazy and insane, but it gives a dreamy shimmer with an incredibly soulful and beautiful touch along with a sound of progressive stoner rock with doom/folk/psychedelic influences as well as epic soundscapes colored with pitch-black melancholy.

The album opens up with the riff-heavy "Vakuum" which directly gives a clue to what to come. With a half pace, rhythm and a galloping bass give the tune a great pulse along with Daniel and David cleaver guitars. Simply a brilliant start of a great album. "Where Emperors Grow" goes in a more progressive rhythm scale, a marvelous piece that shows their musicianship is just magical. "Hjulet" is a more laidback piece with a memorable melody. The guitar folkish rocker "Grycksbo Gånglåt" gives a great Swedish touch on the album. This is followed by the doomish "Mjölksyra", a bit thicker and heavier than the previous tunes, the vocals almost caresses the heavy layout they layout. It also includes a gorgeous guitar pick. The big and groovy "Alfahonan (Shooting Blanks)" is a great choice of route. While "Totemdjur" hits a higher gear with groovy rhythms and distinct vocals. The album closes with "Klarvaken", a beautiful and powerful piece that slowly progresses, and the whispering vocals end with an anxious and almost terrifying summons that gives the chills. GAUPA let your thoughts wander through their surreal tails of sadness and joy. This is an excellent album and considered as a debut album, absolutely brilliant.

In addition to Emma, the band consists of David Rosberg (guitar, percussion, vocals), Daniel Nygren (guitar, vocals), Erik Sävström (bass) and Jimmy Hurtig (drums, percussion).

Sum: "Feberdröm" is an exceptional debut full-length.

Here is my vinyl of this beauty!

Check out today's tune and you will get my drift. "Feberdröm" was recorded in Falun and Borlänge, Sweden 2019. Cover artwork and layout by Ekaterina Kretiv.

Vinyl can be ordered here: shop.bilocationrecords.com/index.php

Today's tune "Vakuum" is taken from the second album "Feberdröm", released April 3, 2020, enjoy!

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

Sunday, time for a classic.

Somehow it turned out to be a girls week, so why not end it with a high head and a real classic that most folks do not know.

"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group THE FOUR PREPS, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964.

It attained worldwide fame after being covered and reworked by English synth-pop duo SOFT CELL in 1981 and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists. Buoyed by the then-dominant synth-pop new wave sound of the time and a memorable performance on the BBC's Top of the Pops, "Tainted Love" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, and was the best-selling single of 1981 in the UK. A major hit in the US during the Second British Invasion, the song spent a then-record 43 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number eight.

American artist Gloria Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" in 1964; the song was written and produced by Ed Cobb and arranged by Lincoln Mayorga. It was the B-side of her 1965 single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home", which was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. According to Nick Talevski, before Jones recorded the song, Cobb had offered it to THE STANDELLS, whom he managed and produced, but they rejected it. THE STANDELLS say that the song was never offered to them and that they were not signed to Cobb's company Greengrass Productions until 1966, some two years after Jones's recording.

In 1973, British club DJ Richard Searling purchased a copy of the almost decade-old single while on a trip to the United States. The track's Motown-influenced sound (featuring a fast tempo, horns, electric rhythm guitar and female backing vocals) fit in perfectly with the music favoured by those involved in the UK's Northern Soul club scene of the early 1970s, and Searling popularised the song at the Northern Soul club Va Va's in Bolton, and later, at Wigan Casino.

Owing to the new-found underground popularity of the song, Jones re-recorded "Tainted Love" in 1976 and released it as a single, but it also failed to chart. This version was released on her album "Vixen" and was produced by her boyfriend Marc Bolan.

The story behind the song "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones, in a short documentary by Top 2000 a gogo (Dutch Public TV) from 2010.

Here is a clip from German TV, not sure about the time but approx 10-15 years ago or so.

Here is the original version of the tune, enjoy!
