Sólstafir - Hula

SÓLSTAFIR have released a new video for their tune "Hula". The song features on the Icelandic outfit’s sixth studio album "Berdreyminn", which arrived in May this year.

The video was directed by Harri Haataja and cinematographer Vesa Ranta and was filmed in Lithuania.

The band tell the magazine Prog: "When we were on the road in 2013, we came across this place called Hill Of Crosses in Lithuania. At the time, we just knew that we would have to shoot a video there one day".

“We developed a good working relationship with Vesa and Harri back in 2015 with the Miðaftann video, and since they are both living in Finland, it seemed a good idea to send them over with the boat from Finland with the camera and help us fulfil this dream of ours.”

Haataja adds: “This time we set out to do a video for Sólstafir outside of Iceland. Aðalbjörn Tryggvason had this beautiful location at Hill Of Crosses in mind and we thought that it would fit perfectly for this clip".

“We also found a couple of other great locations suitable for the story and aesthetic that we had in mind for our video.”

SÓLSTAFIR will head out on tour across Europe from next month, with MYRKUR and ÁRSTÍÓIR joining them on select dates, see all the dates below.

Ruby The Hatchet - Planetary Space Child

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Planetary Space Child" is the latest album released by the American female fronted hard/alternative rock band RUBY THE HATCHET. A band that abound in both the 70s psychedelic infused occult rock as well as in metal and proto-doom genre.

"Planetary Space Child" is an really fun album to listen to, with it's hazy atmosphere, bold personality and a great sense of variety.

The record starts with the title tune, the spacey "Planetary Space Child", great harmonies and powerful voice by Jillian Taylor makes this tune a real piece of art. The next rocker is "Killer", a tune that goes in the more classical format, catchy and full of sludgy riffs. The following tunes follows the same path. "Pagan Ritual" is a more straightforward rocker with psychedelic occult feeling. With a sneaky bass line opens up the beautiful tune "The Fool". "Symphony Of The Night" is an half pace tune at the start before it burst out to kingdom come. "Gemini" is classical rocker with heavy riffing and a more straightforward approach. The last tune of the record "Lightning Comes Again" is a groovy and powerful piece.

Sum: If you want to have a good time, then you play "Planetary Space Child".

A beautiful blue version is released on Vinyl

Today's tune is the title track from Ruby The Hatchet's new album, out August 25, 2017. Video by: Jordan Vance / 3grit.com

The Pretenders - Brass in Pocket

Sunday time for a classic.

By the time Chrissie Hynde and her PRETENDERS released their seminal hit (and amazingly obvious Top 100 Classic Rock Songs inductee) "Brass In Pocket" the band was already on its third lineup... and that's before they had any chart success. Their third single, "Brass in Pocket" was their first U.K. No. 1 and reached No. 14 on the Billboard charts.

"Brass in Pocket" (also known as "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special)") was recorded 1979 and was written by Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott, and produced by Chris Thomas.

Hynde got the idea for the song's title when, during an after-show dinner, she overheard someone enquiring if anyone had, "Picked up dry cleaning? Any brass in pocket?" During an interview with The Observer in 2004, she revealed that she was initially reluctant to have the song released: "When we recorded the song I wasn't very happy with it and told my producer that he could release it over my dead body, but they eventually persuaded me."

The lyric describes the female singer about to have her first sexual encounter with a particular person, and is expressing her confidence that the experience will be successful. According to Rolling Stone magazine critic Ken Tucker, the song uses "an iron fist as a metaphor for "Hynde's" sexual clout." The Rolling Stone Album Guide critic J. D. Considine describes the song as "sassy" and credits the band for "putting bounce in each step" of it. Author Simon Reynolds similarly describes Hynde's vocal as "pure sass" and "a feline narcissism," noting particularly her "lingering languorously" over the words "I'm special." According to AllMusic critic Steve Huey, the backbeat "meshes very nicely with Hynde's unshakable confidence, and the song never gets aggressive enough to break its charming spell or make her self-assurance seem implausibly idealized." Huey also points out a harmonic shift in the music for the portion of the song where the singer lists the various attractive qualities she will use to make the encounter a success. Author Dave Thompson suggests that the song is actually about the PRETENDERS' first live concert rather than a sexual experience.

Enjoy today's tune!

HCSS singer Joakim "Jocke" Berg told World Metal Domination this past summer that "the energy level" during the band's live performances "is high because of the love for the music. I mean, sometimes we are tired like everybody else, but when you go up on that stage, something happens to your body," he explained. "I remember several times when I have been so tired or had a little to much to drink the day before and almost had to beg someone to drag me up on stage. Electric Wizard - See You In Hell

The british Occult doom legends ELECTRIC WIZARD is back in business again after some time off, they will release their new album "Wizard Bloody Wizard", on November 10 via Spinefarm.

The record has been described in a press release as:

"forty-three minutes of cranium-crushing bludgeon rock, a relentless aural brain rape and, like the band's beloved vintage horror/exploitation movies, definitely not for those of a nervous disposition."

The official video for the album's opening track "See You In Hell" also today's tune, can be seen below.

That BLACK SABBATH is the main source for the band is no doubt about that. The reference is already in the upcoming album title "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or as i saw when I was surfing for info:

"Any metalhead worth his or her salt will immediately recognize as an homage to U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. ☺

"Real heavy music… really basic heavy rock, blues-based but brutal" is exactly what ELECTRIC WIZARD is.

The record is made all in analog recording and has been produced by Oborn and Liz Buckingham (guitar) in their own Satyr IX Recording Studio.

The LP sleeve and art has also been conceived by the band and echoes, again, their love of the macabre, evil and sleazy. A sick and twisted bad taste eye-assault that aims to titillate, excite and repulse you.

"Sex and violence are our basest instincts," Oborn says. "I guess we think that engaging the brain and guts on this most basic, primal level is the fastest way to grab people's emotions… It's 'shock' tactics, but the world is so fuckin' brainwashed or bored that they need to be 'woken up'. The 'man' is slowly neutering and killing us with technology and lies… It's time to fight back."

Today's tune "See You In Hell" by ELECTRIC WIZARD, a short film (Directed By Marek Steven ) Witchfinder Productions, Witchfinder Records/Spinefarm Records 2017

Kadavar ‎– Rough Times

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Rough Times" is a KADAVARs fourth album release.

"Rough Times" is great follow up to "Berlin", were the band recycle their previous creations and makes an album were there's a little something here for everyone. The band have really put in some effort to their work, it swings like the old lady sings.

At the first spin my thoughts was thinking, the guys like classic old school pop and have applied it here. Well that's not really true, here is no pop, even if there is some promiscuous references here, the main thing is rock and nothing else. Sometimes you have to listen to the whole thing and not just loose fragments.

Just take tunes "Skeleton Blues" and "Into The Wormehole" where the guys fancyiness for the dank-deep-into-the-soaked-bottom sounds of stoner doom, where everything is turned to max, and yes they do it. Both tunes are killers! The title tune "Rough Times" is a heavy piece where nothing will stand still, wonderful creation of melody and harmonies, you will walk like a happy creature after listening to this! "Die Baby Die" is a catchy son of a bitch, great guitar riffing, heavy drumming, amazing bass playing and really cool lyrics with a superb vocals. "Vampires" is a another great tune, goes in the more classic heavy rock approach, knocking bass line that combines the furious drummer in perfect way and a stunning vocals part along with bustle guitar riffs makes this a killer track. "Tribulation Nation" with it hammering bass line and catchy lyrics just makes you to feel good. "Words of Evil" is classic rocker and says hello with both hands in the sky to BLACK SABBATH. "The Lost Child" with it's 60's psychedelic acid sound along with a mysterious groove in a really beautiful way.  "You Found the Best in Me" smells old western, horses, hill billies, laid back, softish and loveful. The album closes with "A L'Ombre Du Temps", a odd, but cool stand out tune where they experiments with spoken word and in French.

The production is great, the sound is rich, crisp and thick. The tunes are engaging and powerful with a great groove.

Sum: A free-thinking rollercoaster ride thru Berlin!

The Vinyl Versions of the album, nice colors, I got the blue one :)

The band will hit the road to promote the album, see all the dates below.

War - Low Rider

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Low Rider" is a song written by American funk band WAR and producer Jerry Goldstein, which appeared on their album "Why Can't We Be Friends?", released in 1975.

WAR (originally called Eric Burdon and War) is an American funk band from Long Beach, California, known for the hit songs "Spill the Wine", "The World Is a Ghetto", "The Cisco Kid", "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider", and "Summer". Formed in 1969, WAR is a musical crossover band which fuses elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, and reggae. Their album The World Is a Ghetto was the best-selling album of 1973. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. War was also subject to many line-up changes over the course of its formation, leaving member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan as the only original member in the current line-up; four other members created a new group called the Lowrider Band.

According to the All Music Guide review of the song, "the lyric takes the cool image of the low rider — the Chicano culture practice of hydraulically hot-rodding classic cars — and using innuendo, extends the image to a lifestyle". The song's most distinguishable feature is its driving bass line, which is present for nearly all of the song. It also ends with a siren-like noise that then becomes a saxophone solo.

The vocal is by the band's brass player, Charles Miller

The group's sax player, Charles Miller, came up with the idea for the song. Brown explains:

"What happened on 'Low Rider' was in the studio, we were jamming, and I was supposed to have been on the downbeat. But all of the sudden I was on the upbeat. And I said, 'Oh, boy. I got the beat turned around.' I didn't panic. I said, 'Wait a minute. Stay there. Don't change it. Stay.' Because as long as you keep doing it over and over and over, it won't be a mistake. We were just messing around, you know. Then the next thing I know, Charles started just singing, "Low ri-der drives a little slower. The low..." he was just pumping it. And then the next thing I know Lee's over there putting that harmonica on, because Lee is a melody man all the time. And then - boom. If you'd hear the original version of it, all with that jam, that would be worth a million right there. When we finished it, all of us looked at it, 'That's a hit.' We didn't know that it was going to be an icon. You've got to say it's Americana. I don't care if you're driving a Cadillac or a Rolls Royce or if you have a hooptie - hearing it thumping, it just works because it predicts historically a time period in America. That's true about all music, pretty much. If you go back and look at a lot of music from 1800 to the turn of the century, all through the 1900s, how they used to write songs, "You're my little tulip." And then when you go into the 1940s all of the sudden you're talking about growing squash corn, and you're relating your love to that. Then you went into the '50s, you started getting Fats Domino and all them Hollywood types singing - that time period relating to it. Or even Chuck Berry. And then you got into our music, and then you started having all the other artists doing it, like we're not the only ones. But there were certain things during that time period, especially when we went into the Vietnam War, stuff was happening. Then we came on past the Vietnam War, and then all of the sudden the Disco stuff started happening. And then right up to now. You'll be able to look at it, you can tell what was going on, just like food or anything. What was happening. Clothes and everything. So our music, like 'Low Rider,' started setting a trend right there."

Today's tune "Low Rider" is taken from the album "Why Can't We Be Friends?"

Brut Boogaloo - Hurricane Train

BRUT BOOGALOO have been a household name for rock lovers in Norway since the release of their debut LP back in the early mid-2000s.

Their sound is consists of groovy rhythms, big and confident guitar riffs, catchy vocal lines and bottomless energy. The fact that the band loves rock is evident in every tone. Their music is inspired by the greats from the 70s with newer Scandinavian rock mixed in, but the band’s arrangements are truly their own.

Although BRUT BOOGALOO aren’t known for rapidly releasing music, the few releases they have are of a quality few modern rock bands can match. On the 25th of August, 2017 they released their long awaited third album titled "Strike III".

The record consists of 10 songs that shows a great appreciation and understanding for 70s rock. The album which the band has produced themselves has taken almost a decade to complete, but the time has been well spent. This is BRUT BOOGALOO at their sharpest and purest.

Today's tune "Hurricane Train" is taken from the band's latest album "Strike III". The Video is shot with a GoPro on a Duplo train and edited by Michael Stensen Sollien, and directed by Henning Solvang and Michael Stensen Sollien.

Kylver - Hy-Brasil

KYLVER (Pronounced: Kil-ver) is a four piece instrumental progressive heavy rock/metal band that have crafted their take on the progressive genre by mixing slow and heavy doom riffs, odd time signatures, atmospherics of post-rock and Hammond tones of the 70's with a classic rock and metal sound.

Hailing from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the North East of England Kylver is made up of Drummer Barry Micheson, Bassist James Bowmaker, Guitarist Jonny Scott and Organist Neil Elliot.

The band released their first album "The Mountain Ghost" on the 21st of May 2015; a forty-minute long concept album consisting of four tracks that follow the fictitious tale of a spirit who inflicts torment on the residents of a village that lies in the shadow of his mountainous home. The success of this first self released album lead the band to be nominated in the "Limelight" (best newcomer) category of the 2016 Progressive Music Awards.

KYLVERs second album "The Island" was released on the 6th of October the following year. The concept of "The Island" follows a privateer ship whose crew are hired to find a mythical island that is said to hold a portal to another dimension, space or some other world. The ship doesn't last a day or two at sea before is wrecked in a storm. Only one of the crew members survives the storm and finds himself washed up on the beach of the island with a mysterious looking pendant. The pendant contains a map to monoliths that hold the key to the portal. Throughout his journey across the island he has a constant feeling of being followed before becoming across a female inhabitant of the island who helps to guide him in his journey. Once he reaches the standing stones, our sailor is greeted by four cloaked figures who activate the island portal. Once he is transported into the black abyss he encounters beings that are known as 'The Great Race' whose wealth of knowledge is so great, it is too much for any man to comprehend. The ship's sole survivor begs to be sent home as this strange environment he has found himself in is turning his mind into something he cannot fathom. The Great Race agree to send him back but not before they erase all of his memory of his journey. Moreover, The Great Race add another and very selfish twist to protect their knowledge even further. When he arrives back he returns to earth on the eve before the ship sets sail, and from then on his life is stuck in a perpetual loop, with the same events happening over and over and over again.

Today's tune "Hy-Brasil" is taken from "The Island". The Video Shot and Directed by David Hall

SVARTANATT consists of:

Vocals, Guitar / Jani Lehtinen
Guitar / Felix Gåsste
Bass / Mattias Holmström
Organ / Martin Borgh
Drums / Daniel Heaster

Today's tune "Hit Him Down" is released in 2017 by The Sign Records.
