Dark Tranquillity - Moment

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Swedish melodic death metalheads DARK TRANQUILLITY barely needs any introduction. Together with IN FLAMES and AT THE GATES, they were at the forefront of the Gothenburg-style death metal. Now they are back with the twelfth full-length "Moment", thier anticipated follow-up to 2016’s "Atoma", the album was released on 20 November 2020, via Century Media Records.

"Moment" is anoter great release by the band, well played, beautifully produced, the sound is big and clear with great vocals in both the clean and harmful to the harsh and angry screams, great and well written tunes, heavy and cleaver fresh riffing, fine waving drumbeats. I do like what I hear on "Moment", although it may feel a little predictable, they could have taken another step in the development. The guitars that sounds really fresh and updated since the lineup changes that have happened between records, with long time guitarists Martin Henriksson departing after the release of "Atoma" in 2016 and Niklas Sundin leaving this year. Newcomers Christopher Amott (ARCH ENEMY, ARMAGEDDON) and Johan Reinholdz (ANDROMEDA, WIDOW) are doing a teriffic work to fill the gaps and follow the concept and to put their own stamp on it.

"Moment" contain twelve tunes with fifty minutes of play time, the album opens up marvelous with "Phantom Days", a melodic hard hitting piece, or the post-modern "The Dark Unbroken", the angry "Ego Deception" the beautiful piece with marvelous keys in "Standstill", beautiful guitars that waves in like a cross stitch with a imported silk fabric. More raging tunes like "Identical To None" and the chugging "Failstate" and the rusty metal "A Drawn Out Exit". The stunning solo in "Eyes Of The World" is marvelous. The album closes with the atmospehric "In Truth Divided", beautiful soft clean vocals and neatly played instruments wraps this album up in a very good sence. "Moment" is simply another strong record in an already impressively deep catalog.

Sum: "Moment" a must have for DT fans!

Musicians:
Mikael Stanne / Vocals
Martin Brändström / Electronics
Anders Jivarp / Drums
Johan Reinholdz / Guitars

Crobot - What Child Is This?

First Advent, time for the traditional Christmas decorations, light the first candle, cuddle with the family. Gifts are planed and those that have already been bought, will be wrapped with fine paper, a bow and a nice Christmas note with a recipient.

In the distance is the gentle jingle-jangle of bells echoing on all shops, neigbours etc. Record companys releasing Christmas album one after the other, some are good, some are bad, some are fun and some are boring. Mascot Records relasing an "Christmas Rocks E.P.", with pretty cool version of classic tunes eith bands like P.O.D., 10 YEARS, CROBOT, AYREON, OTHERWISE, BLACK STONE CHERRY and DRAGGED UNDER.

For today we have choosen to play the first Christmas tune and it's a real classic, many artists have done thier version of "What Child Is This?", a Christmas carol whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865. At the time of composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this carol that was subsequently set to the tune of "Greensleeves", a traditional English folk song. Although it was written in Great Britain, the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin today.

Only CROBOT could turn a 19th-century hymn into a doomy BLACK SABBATH-esque colossus on "What Child Is This?", so enjoy today's tune taken from "Christmas Rocks E.P.", released November 27 on all streaming apps. Merry Riffmas, Beardos!

En Minor - Mausoleums

The Southern Gothic neo-folk project EN MINOR has been culminating since Philip H Anselmo was a child in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The bases of some songs that have now become the EN MINOR project were written at significant stages in Philip’s life, starting at 9 years old when given his first guitar and no patience to learn other people’s music, started writing his own. Other material from Anselmo’s band of underground lore, Body & Blood, has evolved into EN MINOR songs. Although Philip is most well-known for Extreme Metal and Rock, here we get to hear a softer side of his vocal chords, but lyrically is heavy as anything.

Featuring former members of SUPERJOINT RITUAL, Still, Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, WOVENHAND), Kevin Bond (CHRIST INVERSION) and Jimmy Bower (EYEHATEGOD, DOWN). They’re joined by THE DOVER BROTHERS and Steve Bernal, who contributes his notable talent as former first cellist of the TEMPLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

EN MINOR is a blatant change of pace and embrace all of the melancholy quirks without compromise.

EN MINOR is haveing a streaming event on November 25th: Live at the Orpheum Theater. Get your tickets and exclusive merch at: enminor.nocapshows.com

This is not “party” music. This is “kill the party” music.

Today's tune "Mausoleums" is taken from the brand new album "When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome", released September 4, 2020 by Housecore Records in US and Season Of Mist in Europe. Enjoy!

Sólstafir - Endless Twilight Of Codependent Love

Monday, new week. It's time to present "Record Of The Week"

The Icelandic post-metal titans SÓLSTAFIR is a well visit band here at Tune Of The Day.

In 2014 "Ótta" was the "Record Of The Week". In 2017 they followed with "Berdreyminn" an another trofe at "Record Of The Week". And in between there they contributed with serval tunes during the years. And now it's time to present thier seventh album "Endless Twilight of Codependent Love", released on November 6, 2020 through the record label Season of Mist.

Music will always be inspired by the environment in which it is created. With its incredible array of highly diverse landscapes ranging from white glaciers via volcanic bizarreness, moss-green bubble-fields, deep fjords, and frost-cracked mountains to black beaches, Iceland has shaped a host of astonishingly original in SÓLSTAFIR.

"Endless Twilight Of Codependent Love" highlights the contrasting influences that have inspired the band over the years. Building on the subtleties and beautiful moods of its predecessor "Berdreyminn". From the opening masterpiece "Akkeri" that flows over the 10 minutes mark like a brushstroke by a real master. Follows by some stunning moments in "Drýsill" (Icelandic for demon) is about fighting the demons that you allow to control your mind, and breaking free. It’s about rescuing yourself and finding the strength and the courage to be victorious, no matter how hurt you’ve been. All the tunes are in their native Icelandic, except one "Her Fall From Grace", its sole English language, with the traumatic theme of mental illness of your loved one. A turn with the black metal infused road-trippin "Dionysus" that shows that they havent left thier roots. Followed up by the gracious tune "Til Moldar". The guitar heavy "Alda Syndanna" and the bluesy post-metal piece "Ör" where the opening piano gives me goosebumps. The album finish of with the haunting closer "Úlfur". To develop and take risks is the band's hallmark, that they have succeeded in taking the band to new heights is marvelous, it is only to realize and to congratulate them for their efforts. This is a fantastic record that you should obtain.

The album have a gorgeous cover art by Johann Baptist Zwecker ("The Lady Of The Mountain" (Fjallkonan), a symbol of Iceland, frontispiece to Jón Árnason's Icelandic Legends, 1866)

Sum: Frost-cracked volcanic beauty full of bizarreness!

"Master Blaster (Jammin')" is a 1980 single by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder from his 1980 album "Hotter Than July".

The song, built on a heavy reggae feel, is an ode to reggae legend Bob Marley; Wonder had been performing live with Marley (billing him as an opening act) on his US tour in the fall of that year. Lyrics mention "children of Jah", "Marley's Hot on the box" and the end of the civil war in Zimbabwe.

It was a major hit, spending seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart, reaching number five on Billboard's pop singles chart in the fall of 1980 and peaking at number two on the UK Singles chart and number one in New Zealand.

Jade Bird - Love Has All Been Done Before

"Love Has All Been Done Before" is a tune by the British singer-songwriter Jade Bird, it's taken from her self-titled debut studio album, released on 19 April 2019 through Glassnote Records.

The album includes her debut single "Lottery", which came after her debut extended play Something American, released from the preceding year, and also her breakout single "Uh Huh". The album was supported by a European and North American tour, which includes opening for THE LUMINEERS and HOZIER.

Bird was born in the North of England, but she moved around a lot as a kid because her father was in the army—she’s lived in Germany, Wales, and then in London, where she’s still based at the moment, although she’s hoping to move to Los Angeles at some point in the near future. Her parents were primarily interested in dance music, so it wasn’t until a family friend showed her some old folk classics (Neil Young; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Bob Dylan; and Joni Mitchell) that her ear for the American folk tradition developed. She picked up the guitar herself in the wake of an especially tumultuous time—her parents had just split up, she had moved to Wales with her grandmother and her mom. “I needed a vent, so I think that’s ultimately why I got into music so heavily, because of these transitions, so to speak,” she says.

Bird’s latest work, including today's tune, “Love Has All Been Done Before,” finds the young artist brightening up her sound and taking influence from the punkish stylings of Alanis Morissette and Patti Smith.

Enjoy today's tune "Love Has All Been Done Before".

Cat Power - I Found A Reason

Thursday, time for a cover.

"I Found A Reason" is a tune written by Lou Reed and is taken of the fourth studio album "Loaded", by American rock band THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, released in November 1970 by Atlantic Records' subsidiary label Cotillion.

"Loaded" was a commercial effort aimed at radio play, and the album's title refers to Atlantic's request that the band produce an album "loaded with hits", with a double meaning about the word "loaded", that can also mean "full of drugs" or "really high on drugs". Singer/bassist Doug Yule said, "On Loaded there was a big push to produce a hit single, there was that mentality, which one of these is a single, how does it sound when we cut it down to 3.5 minutes, so that was a major topic for the group at that point. And I think that the third album to a great extent shows a lot of that in that a lot of those songs were designed as singles and if you listen to them you can hear the derivation, like this is sort of a Phil Spector-ish kind of song, or this is that type of person song."

Reed was critical of the album's final mix. He left THE VELVET UNDERGROUND on August 23, 1970, but "Loaded" was not released until three months later, in November. After its release, Reed maintained in interviews that it had been re-edited and resequenced without his consent.

Today's cover version of "I Found A Reason" is made by CAT POWER, the stage name and eponymous band of American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, the tune is taken of the fifth album "The Covers Record", released in 2000 on Matador Records.

Several songs on the album have been used in films, where today's pick "I Found a Reason" was used in (Saving Face, Dandelion andV for Vendetta). Enjoy this beautiful cover!

Architects - Animals

"For Those That Wish To Exist" is the upcoming ninth studio album by British metalcore band ARCHITECTS. It will be released on 26 February 2021 through UNFD and Epitaph Records. The album was produced by Dan Searle and Josh Middleton.

The lyrical content examines the part humans are all playing in the world's slow destruction, and tackles the biggest questions facing the future of our planet. Such concerns have long been prevalent in the music of a band, who have continually championed and shared their platform with causes such as Sea Shepherd, are outspoken critics of barbaric exercises such as fox hunting, and who focus on sustainability in everything from their touring to merch production. The record hangs in a limbo between energizing positivity that it is not too late to correct our collective course, and a paralyzing negativity of defeatism; where hope and despondency are bed-fellows triggered daily by the simple act of existence. A reflection of human condition, the line "For Those That Wish to Exist" calls for all of the humanity to rise to challenge established models and strive for a collective betterment.

In an official press release, the band explained that the record was inspired by global uncertainty in 2020 and looming threats to the future of mankind. Drummer and songwriter Dan Searle explaining and summarizing the record:

"This album was me looking at our inability to change to a way of life that would sustain the human race and save the planet. [...] I wanted to look in the mirror and ask ourselves the question of what are we going to do, as opposed to trying to point the finger at politicians. Change has to start on a personal level. The world has developed a culture of wanting someone else to deal with it, when we need to take our own responsibility. It has to start there."

"For Those That Wish To Exist" will also include some guest artists like Winston McCall of PARKWAY DRIVE, Mike Kerr of ROYAL BLOOD and Simon Neil of BIFFY CLYRO.

On 20 October 2020, the band released the first single "Animals", along with an accompanying music video, see it below. On 22 October, the band announced that to promote the album, they will play a special livestream show from the Royal Albert Hall in London on 21 November, with the show set to screened around the world via the streaming service Veeps.

Old Kerry McKee - Cattle & Wolves

Old Kerry Mckee is a one-man-band based in rural Sweden, in the outskirts of the village Larv. He started out as a death-metal musician but eventually replaced band members with acoustic guitar, home-built drums and an old record player. He's the link that should not be between old folk, blues and black metal. Forged in punk and metal, but forever steeped in the gritty, crooked and idiosyncratic blues-gone-horrid that is so evident in his music. At the same time it's gut-wrenchingly beautiful, dynamic and without a doubt soulful to the max.

Old Kerry Mckee blends the contemporary with the past into his own peculiar compound that transpires genres such as country, metal, folk, and punk. His music has been described as melancholic and with nasal howlings and dark lyrics he battles subjects like poverty, humanism & psychedelia.

When this exquisite spectrum of sound and emotion is performed live we experience something best described as a collision of natural elements, conducted by a guy who wears his heart on his distressed sleeve, cutting it open for everyone to see inside.

Ever since the initial beginnings of Old Kerry McKee, the acoustic guitar has always been the companion closest to heart, faithful, proudly represented and also the most evident part of the creative process. And so, after many years, guitars, experiments and curses, it has fulfilled its role and is now to be succeeded by the electric guitar. This, accompanied by the ever present vinyl player and a new found friend, the cassette recorder, a new sound is slowly taking its shape with the new album. More obscure old vinyls and self constructed sound effects in a grumbling mass will continue to be a big part of the new music, and so as something old is buried, something new is brought to life. Those still standing will be well versed...

"Mono Secular Sounds" is an excellent album, order it on Vinyl just a few minutes ago, I belive I will get back on this as soon as it arrives. Get "Mono Secular Sounds" on bandcamp here https://oldkerrymckee.bandcamp.com/

Today's tune "Cattle & Wolves" is taken from the album "Mono Secular Sounds", released on on Icons Creating Evil Art (INgrooves) at October 23, 2020

AC/DC - Power Up

Monday, new week and it's time for "Record Of The Week".

Legendary rockers AC/DC is back with the band’s 17th studio album "Power Up". Released November 13th, 2020. The album title "Power Up" does not appear on the front cover, except as "PWR/UP" (stylised as "PWRϟUP") on the left and right amps.

AC/DC came roaring back after a period of tragedy and uncertainty. "Power Up" marks the return of vocalist Brian Johnson, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams, all of whom left AC/DC before, during, or after the supporting tour for their previous album "Rock Or Bust" (2014). This is also the band's first album since the death of co-founder and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young in 2017 and it serves as a tribute to him, according to his brother Angus. As far as can read about this is looks like all the tunes on "Power Up" were co-written by Malcolm and Angus Young.

"Power Up" contains 12 tunes with a play time of 41 mins, it sounds excatlly as AC/DC, so you will not get disapointed at all. The tunes are very groovy, loud, dirty with excellent and typical Angus riffs. From the opening rocker "Realize" where the Australian groove rock seeps out of the speakers just as it always has, clever, but simple and very typical AC/DC riffs, choruses with big harmonies. The first and the lead single "Shot In The Dark" is a great pick as single that works for every radio station or in a car stereo during weekends. Brian Johnson’s snotty sandpaper vocals sounds better than ever. Tune like "Demon Fire", "Systems Down", "Money Shot" and "Code Red" are excellent riff partys. Groovy and hook heavy tunes like "Kick You When You’re Down" and "Witch’s Spell" are really fun tune to dig to. The these old fellows still sound as fresh as they do is a wonder. That they mange to keep up the craftmanship with an over all excellent quality is magical. Well done guys.

Sum: Essential album for classic hard rock fans!

As Angus tells it, "Power Up" is a tribute to his brother Malcolm, just like "Back In Black" was a tribute to Bon Scott.

Today's tune "Realize" is taken from "Power Up", enjoy!

Tim Hardin - How Can We Hang On To A Dream

Sunday, time for a classic.

"How Can We Hang On To A Dream" is a song composed and recorded by Tim Hardin.

James Timothy Hardin (December 23, 1941 – December 29, 1980) was an American folk musician and composer. He wrote many hits during his carret, tunes like "If I Were A Carpenter", "Reason To Believe" and "How Can We Hang On To A Dream". Hardin is also known for his own recording career.

Today's tune "How Can We Hang On To A Dream" is taken from the debut album "Tim Hardin 1" by folk artist Tim Hardin, released in 1966 on Verve Records. The album contains one of his most well-known and frequently covered songs, "Reason to Believe" a notable hit for Rod Stewart in 1971. Some of the songs were demos that ended up on the final release. Hardin was reportedly displeased with the string arrangements added after principal recording was completed.

The album photography was shot by Lisa Law (credited as Lisa Bachelis) in the garden of her home, which was known as "The Castle" and where Bob Dylan was staying at the time. One of the outtakes of this album shoot was used for Hardin's last album as well as he died the day Law was to photograph him for his new album, Hang On to a Dream

"Tim Hardin 1" is one of the most powerful and compelling records of its era".

On December 29, 1980, Hardin was found on the floor of his Hollywood apartment by longtime friend Ron Daniels. He died of a heroin overdose. His remains were buried in Twin Oaks Cemetery in Turner, Oregon.

Many covers of the song have been recorded by prominent artists of the age, including a 1969 psychedelic rock recording by the short-lived band GANDALF. A cover version with a choral arrangement by Duncan Browne was recorded by THE NICE, as "Hang On To A Dream", on their third album, "Nice", and NAZARETH on "Snakes 'N' Ladders" (1989). A closer cover version was performed by FLEETWOOD MAC on a 1969 BBC recording, released on "Live at the BBC" in 2001. EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER covered it on "The Return Of The Manticore". Johnny Hallyday released a French version in 1969, as "Je m'accroche à mon rêve", with French lyrics by Georges Aber. It was once again covered in 2019 by prominent Irish rap star Rodney Paz for a special edition of The Late Late Toy Show.

THE LEMONHEADS released a much better cover of the track as a bonus addition to online editions of their 2009 covers album Varshons. Life of Riley: The Lightning Seeds Collection includes a cover version of the song. Françoise Hardy recorded the song for her album En Anglais under the title "Hang On to a Dream". THE MOODY BLUES with Denny Laine recorded two complete versions of the song (on April 5, 1969, and July 5, 1969). Both versions remained unissued until the late 2014 UK Esoteric 2-CD boxset of The Magnificent Moodies. Kathryn Williams recorded a cover version on her album Relations. Hardin's version appeared on the soundtrack to the 1997 film Fever Pitch; the English Romo band Orlando contributed a cover version to the Fever Pitch E.P. which was released to accompany the soundtrack.

Enjoy today's classic!

Thunder - Last One Out Turn Off The Lights

The British hard-rock heroes THUNDER will release their 13th studio album, "All The Right Noises", on March 12, 2021.

"All The Right Noises" is a return to the full-throttle sound of THUNDER that has seen them create a hugely successful 30-plus-year career at the forefront of British rock. The line up on this album is Luke Morley, Danny Bowes, Chris Childs, Ben Matthews and Harry James. The record was recorded at Rockfield Studios and mixed by Mike Fraser.

"All The Right Noises" is an intense confection of illicit charms that reasserts their authority as the number one band in the land. Recorded in the months leading up to the first COVID-19 lockdown, it was originally due for release in September 2020. Strange to reflect then on how much of the new material appears to address the challenging new world we now inhabit.

On the album, Luke says: "All the songs were written and recorded pre-COVID. But it is interesting how if you look at some of the tracks through the prism of COVID, they still make a lot of sense.”

The volcanic lead single from the album, "Last One Out Turn Off The Lights", (see it below), could easily be mistaken for world-ending lockdown rage. But, says Luke, "That was directly about Brexit, but you could apply it to everything else."

The track is indicative of both the ferocity and message of the album as a whole, with subjects tackled including depression, mental health, and diversity. With their knack for imaginative songwriting, "All The Right Noises" also takes aim at Donald Trump in a song written from his perspective, as well as a song Luke describes as "like the opposite" of "My Generation" by THE WHO in its message.

"All The Right Noises" will be available in 1CD, 2CD, 2LP, and 4LP formats, with the 2CD and 4LP releases containing bonus tracks. The LP versions feature a stunning pop-out of the "Singing Ringing Tree", which appears on the album's glorious artwork. The photo cover art was shot by the band's long-term collaborator Jason Joyce. The sculpture, which also appears in the video for "Last One Out Turn Off The Lights", is set in Burnley, Lancashire, and resembles a tree which harnesses the energy of the wind to create a choral, discordant sound.

"All The Right Noises" follows on from 2019's stripped back and reimagined album "Please Remain Seated", which continued THUNDER's consecutive Top 10 U.K. album chart run since their ecstatically received comeback six years ago.
