New week, time for "Record Of The Week"
"Gold & Grey" is the latest release from Georgia’s finest, BARONESS. It's been 12 years since they started their journey thru the color palette with the 2007's "Red" Album to today's "Gold & Grey". It certainly been an wild colorful ride for the guys, lineup changes, bus crash is a few milestones they have been true over the years. "Gold & Grey" was released on June 14th, 2019 on Abraham Hymns.
"Gold & Grey" is a massive piece of music with a lot of stylistic changes and instrumental experimentation. The Baizley cover art is absolutely stunning, the painting was born from a deeply personal reflection on the past 12 years of this band’s history, and will stand as the 6th and final piece in their chromatically-themed records. While "Gold & Grey" found the outfit once again working with "Purple" producer Dave Fridmann (THE FLAMING LIPS, MOGWAI), sequestering themselves at Fridmann’s remote upstate New York Tarbox Road Studio, the 17-track album ushered in two significant changes: a decidedly different recording process and guitar player Gina Gleason’s debut on a BARONESS recording that resulted in the band’s most collaborative and emotionally evocative release to date.
"Gold & Grey" opens with the high paced progressive "Front Toward Enemy", an high energy and angry tune, cool riffing and strumming bass lick. Follows up with the groovy and gothic tune "I’m Already Gone". "Seasons" rolls out of the box with some incredible drumming signed Sebastian Thomson, sounds almost like drum n bass before the rest of the orchestra spices it up with a progressive touch and make it pure magic. The tune have so many sounds that it makes it impossible to label it. "Sevens" is a beautiful piano interlude, before it leave some space to "Tourniquet", low-fi vocals and acoustic guitar that begins the tune before it reaches full blom with excellent twin-guitars. "Anchor’s Lament" soft interlude with some strings until it clear the way for the progressive rocker "Throw Me An Anchor" that have a wide spread from garage rock to progressive sound. The album slows down to a live touching "I’d Do Anything". "Blankets Of Ash" is a war ambient interlude before the atmospheric and soft piece "Emmett-Radiating Light" that continues with a softy "Cold Blooded Angels", a tune that slowly moves forward until it half way true shifts into a heavier sound. "Crooked Mile" is a light guitar interlude. "Broken Halo" have some excellent twin guitar playing. "Can Oscura" is an instrumental piece that steps out a bit with it Krautrock sound. "Borderlines" is majestic rocker with it's monumental riffage and catchy space chorus. The last interlude "Assault On East Falls" tickles on your nerve before the album closer "Pale Sun" that is another curve-ball on the album that show the great musicianship that BARONESS have in 2019 and "Gold & Grey" is a varied and ambitious piece of music and an perfect conclusion of the band’s color-themed albums.
Sum: "Gold & Grey" is a work of art.
Gina Gleason (guitar), Sebastian Thomson (drums),
John Baizley (vocals/guitar) and Nick Jost (bass).
