Magnum - The Monster Roars

Monday, a new week, it's time for "Record Of The Week".

"The Monster Roars" is the 22nd studio album by English rock band MAGNUM, released on 14 January 2022. A band that get's my full respect, a band that has a long history as they is impressive, when they look back at a career which started as early as 1972 and still continue to make great songs and keep the quality up is freaking amazing. To celebrate 50 years in business they now released their 22nd studio album "The Monster Roars". MAGNUM have struggled same as many other band with this pandemic with concert cancellations and the uncertain perspectives for the whole music industry and hopefully it will soon change and they will be able to play the new tunes live.

MAGNUM have been notably consistent with their outputs over the past decades, "The Monster Roars" feels like their strongest in a long time. They have created a vibrant, homogeneous album with great melodies, catchy choruses, marvelous solos and amazing vocals, I am really impressive how they manage this kinda quality so long into thier career.

"The Monster Roars" opens up with the title tune, like a smooth ride the song starts off with a soft piano along with Catley’s vocal until the rest joins up with some power. The vocal parts by Bob Catley is as we are used to, excellent, the Tony Clarkins guitar, Dennis Ward on bass, Lee Morris on drums and keys by Rick Benton sounds amazing. "Remember" is a catchy piece, marvlous guitar, nice piano. "All You Believe In" is a beautiful tune where Rick Benton really shines with his work. Where the keys goes straight into the heart, so nice! "I Won’t Let You Down" stands out a bit in style, but still very powerful. Time to turn back the time in "The Present Not The Past", a tune that could be picked from any of the bands 80's album, cool strings and some flavour to it. "No Steppin’ Stones" the album's first single features a brass intro, didn't see that comming, kinda cool and gives the tune some sparks. "That Freedom Word" serves us with some killer guitars, the solos are insanely beautiful. "Your Blood Is Violence" is a great rocker that follows by "Walk The Silent Hours", a great half ballad until it's time to rock again in "The Day After The Night Before", powerful with a big chorus. The guitar heavy "Come Holy Men" continues the powerful tracks until it's time to wave good bye with the closing tune "Can’t Buy Yourself A Heaven", half acoustic guitars surrounds Catley's vocals the long walk to then round off with a magical guitar solo like no other. To sum this up, "The Monster Roars" is a very good album by a band, they have mastered the craftmanship over 50 years and still continue to serve us listners with classy and hook laden rockers and this is really shows that the monster MAGNUM still roars. The only down side I can see is the artwork, I do miss Rodney Matthews fantasy!

Throughout those five decades the band mainstays have been vocalist Bob Catley and songwriter Tony Clarkin on guitar. The current line up is made up of more recent recruits bassist Dennis Ward, Rick Benton on keyboards and drummer Lee Morris.

Sum: MAGNUM shows that “The Monster Roars”.

Today's tune "I Won't Let You Down", taken from “The Monster Roars”, enjoy!

Fugazi - I'm So Tired

Sunday, time for a classic.

"I'm So Tired" is a song by American post-hardcore band FUGAZI, taken from the album "Instrument Soundtrack", released 1999.

FUGAZI is an American post-hardcore band that formed in Washington, D.C. in 1986. The band consists of guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. They are noted for their style-transcending music, DIY ethical stance, manner of business practice, and contempt for the music industry.

The album "Instrument Soundtrack" is a mainly instrumental soundtrack for the documentary (Instrument) about the band produced by the band and filmmaker Jem Cohen. The soundtrack mostly consists of previously unreleased songs and studio outtakes culled from FUGAZI's history to that point, as well as seven demo versions of songs from their proper albums (six from 1998's End Hits and one from 1993's In on the Kill Taker). Of particular note is the song "I'm So Tired", a piano ballad played and sung by Ian MacKaye, which is a significant departure from FUGAZI's usual post-hardcore sound. Enjoy today's tune!

Räjäyttäjät - Samassa Veneessä

When RÄJÄYTTÄJÄT (The Bombers) first appeared in Finland ten years ago – live, on cassette, and on vinyl – it was like a cleansing fire. RÄJÄYTTÄJÄT arrived to blast rock music into smithereens, atoms, ash, and crap. Rock music was left powerless before the trio’s onslaught. The flamethrowers disguised as instruments left only scorched earth behind.

RÄJÄYTTÄJÄT is a rock band led by Jukka Nousiainen, which was founded in Jyväskylä in 2011. Nousiainen's friend from Oulu had taken the local band to a gig in Ilokivi, Jyväskylä, for which he had asked bassist Sill and British drummer Alex, with whom he had played before. The first performance was watched by six people, half of whom had played in other bands at the event.

The band has been releasing albums extensively since its inception. The band has probably borrowed its name from a journalist asking Cisse Häkkinen about HURRIGANES' 1988 Midsummer return gig, in which Häkkinen had stated “We will be blown up!”

At last we now know, with this latest LP, that the band burned down rock in the name of love; and only so that it could bloom forth stronger and more handsome than ever. RÄJÄYTTÄJÄT are all about cohesion. Rock is eternal, the new age of Aquarius is upon us, and the colours are glowing brighter.

The message, both musically and lyrically, is surprisingly clear. The touch is experimental but firm, and the music is beautiful even at its most angular moments.

The band is still free to emit an unpredictable art fart as and when required, but otherwise this new album definitely slips into the ‘classic rock’ section of record shops – in the proudest possible sense of that term. The world may glisten with shit, but you can listen to these hymns and still live like a civilised human being.

RÄJÄYTTÄJÄT:
Jukka Nousiainen - vocals, guitar
Mikko “Rock” Siltanen - bass
Alex Reed - drummer

Today's tune "Samassa Veneessä" is taken from the bands latest album "III", enjoy!

The Halo Effect - Feel What I Believe

THE HALO EFFECT, the new project featuring five former members of the Swedish metal band IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILLITY. — Jesper Strömblad (guitar), Daniel Svensson (drums), Peter Iwers (bass), Niclas Engelin (guitar) and Mikael Stanne (vocals) — has released its second single, “Feel What I Believe”. The track, the official music video for which can be seen below.

The song is basically about how it felt growing up and discovering extreme metal in our late teens. Delving into something that was both frightening and alluring at the same time. And having that as the sole focus as you started playing in a band and in essence decided who you wanted to be. That confidence and laser focus is what still fascinates me I love that this somehow endured over the years. This is basically us at 19 screaming "How don't you understand this?". And even if people around us didn't get it at the time at least they could see our passion for it and that's what this song is about.

The video is also reminiscent of the videos we saw growing up. A bunch of long haired people in an abandoned warehouse playing loud music while trying to look cool basically. What we did here though is bring it to another level thanks to Theo Gabay and his amazing team. I love that it captures the vibe of us playing and really enjoying what we do. Also it looks spectacular.
The band have also announced their first ever tour, accompanying Swedish death metal berserkers AMON AMARTH and US thrashers MACHINE HEAD on 31 dates throughout Europe and the UK. See the dates below.

The band comments: “We could not be more excited to partner with Cobra Agency for our first tour of Europe together with metal giants AMON AMARTH and MACHINE HEAD. Working together with people who are passionate about the road, the crews, the bands and the fans means a lot to us and doing this together is something we very much look forward to. See you in Sept/Oct!“

Today's tune "Feel What I Believe" taken from the upcoming album, due later in the year via Nuclear Blast.

Unto Others - Strength

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Oregon goth-metallers UNTO OTHERS is back with the second album "Strength".

Yes I know, I'm late for the ball again, but I was waiting for Vinyl which would have been released a long time ago, but has been postponed, now at the end of February and now I can not wait any longer, haha So for today you get the album and here is my review on it.

IDLE HANDS or UNTO OTHERS as they are called today really shows thier "Strength" that they are the finest band in goth-rock today. A band that mixes the classic heavy metal and goth rock in a excellent way, almost like CURE did distort them self up to THE SISTERS OF MERCY and added some chilli with some power to boost everything up and at least the lyrical themes that deals with life, death, fantasy, mysticism and some personal issues.

"Strength" kicks on with the furious and dark piece "Herion", were the lyrics tells a story of addiction, the music is marvelous and fantastic, the same dark theme continues "Downtown". The same theme continues throughout the album where they handle the rhythms and melody in a wonderfully way, they mixes styles and tempos to keep up the intresst and almost create a freeway for what's to come when they take the next level on the follow up album. Gabriel Franco vocals part is just brilliant in my ears, incredibly mesmerizing with his baritone voice, something that really take place on the next tune "When Will Gods Work Be Done", a powerful anthem. On "No Children Laughing Now" the sound is a bit diffrent here, still a dark piece, heavy riffing, furious doublebass drumming, which then shifts up the tempo in "Destiny", heavy riffing, heavy drumming and some softer vocal parts. The light punkish "Why" is another brilliant step to widen their views. They even manage to add a cover to the album, a fantastic version of Pat Benatar’s 1980 classic "Hell Is For Children". Some rumbling bass in the slightly more polished "Summer Lightning". The title tune really summarizing everything the album has offred during it's play time of forty-six minutes and twenty-two seconds as my digital album shows. "Strength" really have some well-written lyrics, marvlous lead guitars, excellent vocals, hard and heavy doublebass drumming and a rumbling bass lines. The album needs more of me and was not as direct as "Mana", but if you give it time, dive into what it wants to convey, you will be rewarded, I promise, you’ll love it.

Sum: "Strength" is something you need now and UNTO OTHERS will provide it to you!

Powermad - Nice Dreams

Sunday, time for a classic.

POWERMAD is an American speed metal band, formed in Minneapolis in 1984. The group has been called an "innovative and often forgotten speed metal band...who infused progressive metal styles and European styles into abstract American speed metal." The band's intricate riff formulations were heavily influenced by thrash metal acts like METALLICA and TESTAMENT. Vocalist Joel DuBay's singing is easily recognizable with his mixture of singing and high screams.

Their first and only full-length album until 2015, "Absolute Power", was released in 1989. Other than a US tour opening for OVERKILL, a video featured on MTV of their single "Nice Dreams" and a cameo appearance in the David Lynch film "Wild at Heart" (where they go from playing their own music to Elvis Presley's with Nicolas Cage singing), POWERMAD never achieved notable commercial success. Their releases in the 1980s, however, were critically acclaimed and are considered collectors items today by fans of thrash and speed metal music.

Today's tune "Nice Dreams" is taken from the album "Absolute Power", enjoy!

Ibaraki - Tamashii No Houkai

TRIVIUM singer and guitarist Matthew kiichichaos Heafy reveals the first single from his long-awaited and much-anticipated IBARAKI project.

IBARAKI — the name for a terrifying Japanese demon taken from feudal legend — is the end result of Kiichi's continued journey to find his voice. It's personal, it's deep, and its inspirations include everything from an adoration for the extremes of black metal and beyond. "'Tamashii No Houkai' means 'the breaking of the soul' or 'soul collapse," explains Kiichi. "It's a Japanese term that didn't exist before, but one we forged to reflect the song's meaning." Kiichi, who is of Japanese heritage, continues, "'Tamashii No Houkai' is co-written by Ihsahn the legend behind EMPEROR official and a musician who has been a longtime influence and mentor to so much that I do in music. The writing of this song was the turning point for IBARAKI — it summarized everything from the past, present, and future of what I thought black metal was, is, and could be." Kiichi finishes, "'Tamashii No Houkai' is the perfect summary and representation of everything that IBARAKI is… and will be."

It was Kiichi's exposure to Ihsahn solo work that would inspire the gradual craftsmanship that would eventually become IBARAKI. It was also the beginning of a friendship and creative collaboration that would eventually compel Ihsahn to take a leap of his own into a newfound role as producer on the project. While much of the material for IBARAKI was assembled over months and years — as much a songwriting process as an exchange of ideas between friends — it wasn't until the pandemic that the space was created and the idea could really flourish.

Today's tune "Tamashii No Houkai" by IBARAKI project with special guest Ihsahn of EMPEROR. Enjoy! .

Meat Loaf - Out of the Frying Pan (And into the Fire)

Michael Lee Aday (born Marvin Lee Aday; September 27, 1947 – January 20, 2022), better known as Meat Loaf, was an American singer and actor. He was noted for his powerful, wide-ranging voice and theatrical live shows. His Bat Out of Hell trilogy "Bat Out of Hell", "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell", and "Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose" have sold more than 65 million albums worldwide. More than four decades after its release, the first album still sells an estimated 200,000 copies annually and stayed on the charts for over nine years, making it one of the best-selling albums in history.

In January 2020, during an interview for The Mirror, Meat Loaf announced "I'm not old. I've got songs for another record and I'm reading a script." In a February 2020 Facebook post, Meat Loaf announced his intention to record a new album containing 'four or five new tracks, including Steinman's "What Part of My Body Hurts the Most" (a song long requested by fans, but previously under contract restrictions for the Bat Out of Hell musical), along with the original 1975 demo recordings made for the Bat Out of Hell album. Meat Loaf's longtime collaborator Jim Steinman died on April 19, 2021, of kidney failure.

In a Facebook post in November of 2021, he further elaborated that he and his band would be returning to the studio in January 2022 to record seven new songs for a forthcoming album, which would also include live tracks from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Meat Loaf himself passed away on 20 January 2022, at the age of 74, apparently without any recording having taken place. His death was announced on his official Facebook page. The statement said the musician’s wife was by his side and his friends had been with him in his final 24 hours. No immediate announcement of the cause of death was released by his family or representatives; however, a source through TMZ stated that he died from COVID-19.

Must add a little story. Have actually worked with Meat Loaf on a couple of occasions, a very nice gentleman. Remember that at one point. Must be for a 12, 15 years ago when he did a show at the Hovet (Stadium) here in Stockholm. The "Hovet" is a fairly old venue, where the loadin/loadout is kind of upstairs, a long corridor, like a hill, all things are transported down, quite steep. After tearing down all the equipment, all things go up the hill and then into the trucks for the next destination. In the middle of this swirls of things that are going out, the uncle shows up, alert as a lark and starts pulling boxes. Haha who would have thought that, he holds chats with almost everyone, very nice man indeed and very funny. Im happy to been part of that, hearing the stories in the midddle of the loadout is kinda marvelous.

Today's tune "Out of the Frying Pan (And into the Fire)", taken from the sixth studio album "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell" by American rock singer Meat Loaf and was written and produced by Jim Steinman. It was released in September 1993, sixteen years after Meat Loaf's first solo album "Bat Out of Hell". The video clip is from last year's "Talk and Songs at Huckabee", enjoy!

Black Market Karma - Heady Ideas

If we continue in the Neo-Psychedelia and Space Rock and offers the South East London’s favourite psychedelic darlings, BLACK MARKET KARMA that with fifth studio album "Upside Out Inside Down". A swirling album with a great portion of sixties psychedelia and garage rock.

As the band’s vocalist and songwriter "Stan" says. “Our sound is mainly created with guitars, organs, synthesisers, drums, percussion and Indian instruments such as the sitar and harmonium. We do, however, use many other sounds in different places throughout our music”.

Today's tune "Heady Ideas", taken from the album "Upside Out Inside Down". Enjoy!

New Candys - Vyvyd

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Vyvyd" is the fourth and latest album by the Italian alternative rockers NEW CANDYS, it was released on 4 June 2021 via Little Cloud Records. NEW CANDYS was formed in Venice in 2008. "Vyvyd" has its own mythology where they played with religious, pagan, and archetypal symbols, which have been distorted through their own lens. If you have to sum up the album in one concept it would be the contradiction of light: God/good is often represented with a bright glow, whilst Lucifer, the personification of evil, means light-bearer. They have been inspired by the visionary cinema of Kenneth Anger and Alejandro Jodorowsky among others. "Vyvyd" is a very interesting release, where the music oscillates between some old-school psych-rock, 60's pop with vibes of shoegaze, and indie rock. Catchy melodies with a great vibe, but there is a shimmer of sad loneliness, with a happy shell. Hard to explain but that's the feeling I get when spinning this, nothing bad at all as my thoughts go into this pandemic and I guess that infects what they create whether they want to or not. But hey, this is freaking good. Give it a spin and you get my drift. It's a bit different but it works so well. Take the electro riff and the pummeling drumming of opener "Twin Mime" that grabs you by the neck into their world with fuzzy sonics and glorious chorus. Followed by heavy riffing and thunderous drumming in "Zyko". Then we change the direction to a softer and smoother ride in "Factice", quickly hear PRIMAL SCREAM echoing in the background. Nice song with good drive. "Begin Again" is a trippier number and "Evil Evil" opens the gate for some electro fuzz, amazing tune. "Helluva Zoo" is a guitar-driven rocker until it's time for "The Clockmaker", the more compact riffing and drumming change the direction again and in "Q&K" they have invited Jancy Buffington (MØAA) to add some of her dreamy vocals on the track and wow! Her voice really boosts the tune. The album closes up with "Snake Eat Snake", a drumming beat and a softer vocal line that almost masses out the record. This is really great work from these Italians, I do Highly recommend "Vyvyd" for anyone of likes marvelous and well-creating melodies and has their heart close to psych, then this babe will follow you.
Arranged, performed and produced by Fernando Nuti (vocals, guitars, keys), Andrea Volpato (guitars, synthesizer, backing vocals), Alessandro Boschiero (bass) & Dario Lucchesi (drums, percussion). Music and words by Fernando Nuti. Recorded and mixed by Andrea Volpato at Fox Studio (Venezia). Additional mixing by Tommaso Colliva at Laboratorio Testone (Milano). Mastered by Giovanni Versari at La Maestà (Cesena). Guest vocals on “Q&K” by Jancy Buffington (MØAA). Additional recording on “Snake Eat Snake” by Pierluigi Ballarin at Unnecessary Recordings (Bologna). Additional arrangement on “Helluva Zoo” by Diego Menegaldo. Artwork by Fernando Nuti & Laura Gamba (Lucy Færy).

Van Halen - Everybody Wants Some

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Everybody Wants Some!!" is a song by the American hard rock band VAN HALEN it is the second track off their 1980 album "Women And Children First". It is one of the band's most popular songs, starting as a concert highlight throughout the band's early career.

The song is rife with experimental features including a "jungle" drum and Tarzan-like vocal introduction and some new guitar playing techniques from guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The drum-vocal interlude or breakdown section has an improvised feel, with Roth ad-libbing conversational dialogue; for example, he begins the section by saying “I like…” before being cut off by Eddie striking a guitar chord, then finishes "I like the way the line runs up the back of the stockings". At the very end of the song, Roth quips, "Look, I'll pay you for it, what the fuck?" However, the song fades out to where the obscenity is not entirely audible.

The song was a staple on all of the tours with Roth, following its release. Often, the band would stop in the middle of the song and Roth would chat with the crowd for several minutes before finishing the song. In later years, with their later lead singers, VAN HALEN would use the opening drum beat from this song as an introduction into "Panama."

The song appeared in the 1985 comedy Better Off Dead in a humorous Claymation scene. It is also featured in the 2009 horror-comedy Zombieland. The 1999 Judd Apatow-produced comedy Freaks and Geeks featured the song in episode 9, "We've Got Spirit". It is also featured in the 2016 Richard Linklater film Everybody Wants Some!! The song appeared in the 2001 comedy film Joe Dirt.

Enjoy today's classic released May 1980.

The Hellacopters - Eyes Of Oblivion

Swedish high-energy rock and rollers THE HELLACOPTERS will release a new studio album, "Eyes Of Oblivion", on April 1 via Nuclear Blast. It's with a big welcome back I spin the latest title tune. "Eyes Of Oblivion" will mark their first full-length collection of new material since 2008's "Head Off".

Nicke Andersson the guitarist/vocalist states: "The album has 10 songs, and although it's obviously not easy to be objective at all, I think musically it sums up everything we've touched upon from the start in 1994 up until now. Some of the songs date back as far as 10 years or more, and some were written more recently. It's rock and roll played with high energy, so for lack of a better term, I say high-energy rock and roll. You could say it sounds like THE BEATLES meets JUDAS PRIEST or LYNYRD SKYNYRD meets the RAMONES but the best way to describe this album is that it sounds like THE HELLACOPTERS today." 2022 will now mark an exciting new chapter in the history of THE HELLACOPTERS, with an album that sums up what the band delivers like no other: soulful and energetic rock’n’roll!

THE HELLACOPTERS are a Swedish garage rock band that was formed in 1994 by Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Andreas Tyrone "Dregen" Svensson (guitar), Kenny Håkansson (bass) and Robert Eriksson (drums).

THE HELLACOPTERS line up 2022:
Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Andreas Tyrone "Dregen" Svensson (guitar), Anders Lindström (organ, piano), Dolf DeBorst (bass) and Robert Eriksson (drums).

Today's tune "Eyes Of Oblivion" is the title track from the upcoming album, enjoy!

Chubby And The Gang - Coming Up Tough

West London five-piece CHUBBY AND THE GANG are balanced by two energies – a casual “fuck it” on one side, an active “fuck off” on the other. For every moment of punk imperfection, there’s an intricate flurry of detail. For every enraged statement about modern life as war, there’s a lyric like “Hello heartbreak, my old friend” that catches you off guard. Made up of musicians from across the consistently thriving and criminally overlooked UK hardcore scene (ft. THE CHISEL, BIG CHEESE and more), CHUBBY AND THE GANG marinate its characteristic speed and sick-of-it-all energy in a mixture of 50s pop sounds. The result is a prickly take on the older, more melodic genres that punk derives from, chewing them up and spitting them out into something mangled but revitalised.

They have cited influences including the RAMONES, DR. FEELGOOD, COLOURED BALLS and IRON VIRGIN. In reference to the band's choice of sound, Manning-Walker stated "I wanted to put in an organ, a handclap, a harmonica, a tambourine and the quick element of it comes from me only experiencing hardcore for 15 years. Because of where I come from it all ended up being 200mph." Their music also often makes use of vocal samples from television series and movies such as the Jimmie Rodgers Show.

I really like what I hear and I will try to get a copy of the new album "The Mutt's Nuts", so maybe a review will come soon.
Fronted by Charlie Manning Walker (aka Chubby Charles) and backed by Tom ‘Razor’ Hardwick, Meg Brooks Mills, Ethan Stahl and Joe McMahon (aka the Gang), the band tell stories of modern London.

Today's tune "Coming Up Tough" is taken from the bands second and latest release "The Mutt's Nuts", enjoy!

The Raveonettes - The End

Thursday, time for a cover.

"The End" is an epic song by the American rock band THE DOORS. Lead singer Jim Morrison initially wrote the lyrics about his break up with his girlfriend Mary Werbelow, but it evolved through months of performances at the Whisky a Go Go into a much longer song. THE DOORS recorded a nearly 12-minute version for their self-titled debut album, which was released on January 4, 1967.

Today's version is by the Danish indie rock duo THE RAVEONETTES, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar, instruments and vocals, and Sharin Foo on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by THE EVERLY BROTHERS coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.

Today's tune "The End", by THE RAVEONETTES can be found on the compilation album "A Psych Tribute To The Doors". Features performances by THE BLACK ANGELS, THE RAVEONETTES, CLINIC, PSYCHIC ILLS, SONS OF HIPPIES, ELEPHANT STONE and more!
