Nacho Vegas - El Mundo En Torno A Ti

Nacho Vegas is a Spanish singer-songwriter who stylistically oscillates between folk music and rock. He usually sings alone or with the group LA CUARTA TRAMA ASTURIANA.

As a singer-songwriter, the influences of Will Oldham, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt, among others, are recognized in Nacho Vegas. Explore the intimate ways of the singer-songwriter in his music, intense but elusive; his texts have a strong autobiographical, self-referential character, he is in some way postmodernist in that he uses references to speeches or elements of other musicians, filmmakers, writers. Although in the largest body of his songs he sings to places, situations, people and characters that exist or are inspired by specific people, transformed urban legends, etc.

The rock aspect incorporates minimalist nuances, which can approximate both the work of Pascal Comelade and the arrangements of Mastretta . Vegas music also recalls Spanish indie figures like Fernando Alfaro - Chucho - and even at times, the loudest, Los Planetas. But mainly his style is identifiable with singer-songwriters of modern folk and rock, from whom he has recognized extracting chords, refrains, pieces of lyrics, etc., to compose his songs.

Few can write songs as intimate and incisive at the same time as this one. In it, Nacho Vegas builds a modern fable about colliding universes, about the frustration caused by fighting to save someone you care about from a toxic ecosystem that he has built around himself. Trying to lift the blindfold of someone who doesn't want to see is harder the more egocentric and alienated his world is, no matter how much one keeps trying. With a reflective cadence, a narrative melody that flows peacefully with the lyrics and a steady and slow rhythm, Nacho sings to that frustration, but not from resentment, but from the melancholy caused by things that are impossible to preserve.

Today's tune "El Mundo En Torno A Ti", taken from his latest album "Mundos Inmóviles Derrumbándose", released on Oso Polita Records, 2022, enjoy!

Morgan Wade - Wilder Days

Morgan Wade didn’t write to be a sensation, for critical acclaim or massive concert tours. She wrote to speak her truth, to save her own life – and perhaps throw a rope to others struggling with the weight of a world moving too fast, loves where you fall too hard and nights that, good or bad, seem to go on forever.

2021 saw "Reckless", her Thirty Tigers/now Sony Music Nashville debut, and lead single “Wilder Days”, (see and listen to it below), topping critical lists from Rolling Stone, TIME, Stereogum, New York Times, Boston Globe, FADER, Tennessean, Whiskey Riff, Billboard, and The Boot and Taste of Country who both proclaimed, “a once-in-a-decade debut.” With a voice that is raw hurt, deep knowing and somehow innocence retained, Wade wrote or co-wrote a song cycle about the reality facing teens and 20-somethings that embraced raw desire, the reality of getting high and getting sober, the realm of crawling through the wreckage with a tough vulnerability that is as singular as the young woman from Floyd, Virginia.

Today's tune "Wilder Days", taken from her debut album "Reckless", enjoy!

Celeste - Stop This Flame

Today it's the International Women's Day (IWD), a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.

So for today we add all our focus to the womans on this planet and play a "Stop This Flame", a song by British singer and songwriter Celeste. The single was released on 9 January 2020 through Both Sides and Polydor Records as the second single from her debut studio album "Not Your Muse". It was written by Celeste and Jamie Hartman, who produced the track with John Hill. The song samples Nina Simone's version of "c" and Nina Simone is credited as a co-author.

"Stop This Flame" was Celeste's first single of 2020, the year in which she was critically tipped for success by many major publications. Celeste told Dork, "In essence, 'Stop This Flame' is a song about seeing it through to the end. Whether it’s about not letting go of love, not letting go of a dream or stridently coming through some form of adversity. The song has always evoked those feelings within me.” She told Apple Music, "For me when I sing the song, it's about like never ending determination to get that point." The song is "driven by an insistent minor-key piano vamp."

Today's tune "Stop This Flame", taken from "Not Your Muse". The song's music video was directed by Leonn Ward and shot in New Orleans. It premiered on YouTube on 7 February 2020, and was later nominated for Best British R&B/Soul Video at the 2020 UK Music Video Awards. Enjoy!

Eddie Vedder - Earthling

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

This week, it is not a newcomer who is visiting, but a very experienced rock musician. Eddie Vedder (born December 23, 1964) is an American singer, musician and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and one of four guitarists of the rock band PEARL JAM. He also appeared as a guest vocalist in TEMPLE OF THE DOG, the one-off tribute band dedicated to the late singer Andrew Wood. Vedder is known for his powerful baritone vocals.

"Earthling" is the third solo studio album by Eddie Vedder. The album was released on February 11, 2022, by Republic Records and Seattle Surf.

"Earthling" is a showcase of defiance and loss, and above all, of acceptance, forgiveness, and perseverance. The album follows up the "Ukulele Songs" where this album sounds nothing at all like the previous one. Where "Earthling" serves a few righteous rockers like "Power Of Right" where we hear Chad Smith on drums, heavy riffing by Josh Klinghoffer (RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS). Tunes like "Brother The Cloud", "Rose Of Jericho" and "Good And Evil" follows the same pattern where the later have a bit of PJ Punkinesh over it. The speedy rocker "Try" have some cool harmonicas by Stevie Wonder.

There are a few powerful pop rockers, like the opening "Invincible", the Tom Petty like "Long Way", the beautiful "The Haves" to the more college rockers like "The Dark" and "Fallout Today". Some cool guest in "Picture" where Elton John is on vocals and piano, Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums and on the tune "Mrs. Mills" we find Ringo Starr behind the drums and it even have some horns to boost the pop tune up. The album is really a varied project by Eddie Vedder, really fun listen and yes it's worth your time. To bad that we have to wait to the summer for the Vinyl.

Sum: An unexpected and fun release by Vedder.

Today's tune "Brother The Cloud", taken from "Earthling", enjoy!

Rebekka Bakken - True North

On "Things You Leave Behind" Rebekka Bakken opts for all three of these possibilities: she loves life so much she experiences it in constant change and lets go of whatever wants to leave. The passage of time and things - elemental for her songs.

"Things You Leave Behind" presents Rebekka Bakken as an extraordinarily mature singer and songwriter. The album title marks both a new beginning and a retrospective and stands for music that experiences its future in the here and now. It is her personal liberation and a general slap in the face of critics and other unconscientious objectors.

Today's tune "True North" is a deeply sad ballad but wonderfully performed during the Beethoven Project "Vienna 2020 - Capital of Music" for the Vienna Tourist Board under the musical direction of Aleksey Igudesman and with his and Rebekka Bakken's participation. Performance footage was shot on stage at the Museumsquartier in Vienna. Enjoy!

Amythyst Kiah - Fancy Drones (Fracture Me)

The Tennessee singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah did share a Live Performance Video of the tune “Fancy Drones (Fracture Me)” released September 30, 2021 by Rounder Records.

“Fancy Drones (Fracture Me)", is one of the standout tracks from her acclaimed Rounder Records debut "Wary + Strange".

“This song started as a poem,” says Amythyst. “First World modern society allows us so much access to technology, material possessions, medication for our ailments, supplements to make up for a poor diet. All of this convenience because we are convinced that being workaholics makes us who we are. We become cogs in a large machine. It’s a tale as old as time and we are all susceptible to it. This is just another blues song that laments that tale in a fresh way.”

"Wary + Strange" was released in June via Rounder Records, earning Amythyst glowing features and reviews with The New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning: Saturday.

Enjoy!

Tori Amos - Spies

"Ocean To Ocean" is the sixteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Tori Amos, released on October 29, 2021. A vinyl release followed on January 28, 2022. Amos will support the album with a US tour in April and June 2022, with a yet to be announced Europe tour to follow.

In spite of the various crises that have occurred since 2017’s Native Invader, Tori Amos has emerged with "Ocean To Ocean", her most personal work in years – an album bursting with warmth and connection, with deep roots in her earliest song writing.

Written during the 3rd Lockdown in Cornwall this year, "Ocean To Ocean" is a universal story of going to rock bottom and renewing yourself all over again.

For a record written within limited surroundings, two things are remarkable – its rich stylistic variation, from tango to wide-screen romance, and the big-heartedness of songs, which run almost like a series of love letters to family both present and absent. It is, in one sense, her most Cornish record yet: the artwork says it all, with Amos shot on the cliffs, and in the caves on the county’s south west shores.

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Her songs focus on a broad range of topics, including sexuality, feminism, politics, and religion.

Today's tune "Spies", taken from the new and latest album "Ocean To Ocean" by Tori Amos, enjoy!

Ossler - 16.45 I Smittans År

Pelle Ossler has a background as a guitarist in WILMER X, sidekick to Thåström, one of three members of the SÄLLSKAPET and much more. Since the 1990s, he has also had an ongoing solo career where he has released records in his own name. As many as eight pieces have been made with "Regn Av Glas" which is a generous piece of Swedish Smörgårds bord with over an hour of playing time divided into fifteen tunes where each song feels important and part of a larger work.

Pelle Ossler's music is like a soundtrack and “Rain of Glass” is as if you had composed Johan Theorin's magical Öland detective story “Skumtimmen” from 2007. It is both beautiful and calm, at least on the surface, but then there are things that rub in the soundscape, above all Pelle's guitar, which twists, hisses unbridled but still with control.

Pelle's guitars hiss and quarrel, he sings almost whispered his own and very personal lyrics that almost border on prose filled with breathtaking references and whims.

Give today's song a spin, you might enjoy it as much as I do.

Today's tune "16.45 I Smittans År", taken from the latest album "Regn Av Glas"

John Mellencamp - Chasing Rainbows

The American musician John Mellencamp, known as the singer-songwriter, painter, actor, and film director. He is also known for his catchy brand of heartland rock, which emphasizes traditional instrumentation. John Mellencamp has released a new single, "Chasing Rainbows," of the upcoming release "Strictly A One-Eyed Jack" January 21, 2022

The album features the previously released Bruce Springsteen duet “Wasted Days.”, he also appears on two other tracks "Did You Say Such a Thing" and "A Life Full of Rain".

Mellencamp, 70, lives in Bloomington, Indiana, and is currently working on the release of his 25th album, for which he debuted a sample of the song “I Always Lie to Strangers,” earlier this year. Taking a tone similar to that of his pensive new album are his oil paintings, for which he enlists a moody color palette and unsmiling subjects who portray sunken eyes and haunting stares. Mellencamp, who is of German descent, is drawn to a style consistent with early 20th-century German expressionism, which he taps into to manifest his artistic interpretation of both beauty and pain.

Check out his paintings here: https://www.mellencamp.com/paintings

Official plans have yet to be confirmed, but Mellencamp aims to resume touring sometime next year. He confirms that he'll skip large arenas and stick to a consolidated schedule.

Today's tune "Chasing Rainbows" is the next track from the upcoming album, enjoy!

Leonard Cohen - Puppets

The Italian music magazine 'Rockol' introduces its audience to the music video "Puppets," a song from Leonard Cohen's album "Thanks For The Dance", by relaying the words of the video's director Daniel Askill. “It has been such a gift to have the opportunity to create these visual responses to the music of Leonard Cohen. Cohen has an incredible ability to create a bridge between the sublime and the prosaic—the metaphysical and political."

"Thanks For The Dance" is the fifteenth and final studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, released posthumously through Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on November 22, 2019. It is the first release following Cohen's death in November 2016, and includes contributions from various musicians, such as Daniel Lanois, Beck, Jennifer Warnes, Damien Rice and Leslie Feist. The song "The Goal" was released with the announcement of the album, on September 20, 2019.

Described as a "continuation" of Cohen's previous studio album, You Want It Darker (2016), the album's vocal tracks were recorded during the same sessions, with Cohen's son and album producer Adam Cohen noting that the album should not be considered an album of "discarded songs or B sides"

Enjoy today's tune where the director Daniel Askill hands a haunting video for “Puppets,” off Cohen’s 2019 posthumous album, "Thanks For The Dance". Shot in black and white, the video follows a lonely figure kitted out like Cohen — played by actor Bobbi Salvör Menuez — as they fall to their knees in the New York City streets, self-immolating as loose papers litter the cobblestones.

Jon Allen - Night And Day

Jon Allen, acclaimed singer-songwriter from England released his third album, "Deep River" on July 8th, 2014 via OK! Good Records in the US and Canada.

"Deep River" sees Allen paying tribute to great tunes of the past; mixing catchy Sixties-inflected rock, soul, and country blues. Since breaking out in the music scene in 2008, Jon has gained a loyal and ever-growing fan base through his talent as a vocalist, guitarist, and song-writer. His songs have provided the perfect soundtrack for hit prime time TV shows such as "Homeland" and "Bones", along with Hollywood blockbusters "The Oranges" and "Safe Haven". With vocals that are eerily reminiscent of a young Rod Stewart, "Deep River" finds Jon Allen channeling his wide range of influences with songs covering relationships, moving on, and finding oneself.

Jonathan Richman - I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar

Sunday, time for a classic!

"I Was Dancing In The Lesbian BarI Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar", is a tune taken from the fourth solo album "I, Jonathan" by the American singer, songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Richman, released by the Rounder Records label in 1992.

As the founder of influential protopunk band THE MODERN LOVERS, Richman had strived to convey authentic emotions and storytelling with his music. "I, Jonathan" continued this aesthetic with simple and sparse rock and roll arrangements, and straightforward lyrics about mundane topics.

Songs on the album addressed topics such as backyard parties ("Parties in the U.S.A"), memories of neighborhoods in which Richman had lived ("Rooming House on Venice Beach" and "Twilight in Boston") and his admiration of his primary musical inspiration, the VELVET UNDERGROUND ("Velvet Underground"). The latter song includes a brief interlude of the VELVET UNDERGROUND song, "Sister Ray".

The album helped increase Richman's cultural profile, which would include a 1993 appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien during which Richman performed one of the album's songs, "I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar".

Jose Gonzalez - Local Valley

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Local Valley" is the fourth full-length studio release by the Swedish-Argentinian singer Jose Gonzalez. Recorded at González's bucolic home studio near the Swedish coast, "Local Valley" brings no grand reinventions, it follows the same footsteps that he once set with his debut 2003 "Veneer". González has always been a cross-cultural talent and a deep thinker, something that shines true the new album. "Local Valley" is an beautiful record where González’s hypnotic voice and his fingerpicking pattern has a prominent role in the songs. The album has a great vibe and flows smoothly from the first tone to the last.

"Local Valley" contain tunes in each of his three languages. First single "El Invento" has Spanish lyrics and works just brilliant in the González trademark, listen to the tune below and watch the video. Follows up by the excellent "Visions" and "The Void" to continue in a more gentler "Horizons" to some magic guitar playing in the more uptempo "Head On" and the strummer "Valle Local" where the Spanish is back again. Some electronica is backing up González in "Lasso In". "Lilla G", is a Swedish (bed time song) written for his daughter, where "Swing" is a groovy uptempo piece. The groovyness continues in the latin influenced "Tjomme" where the Swedish lyrics returns. "Line Of Fire" is stripped, naked and incredibly beautiful piece. The tune is a re-recording of the 2013 song of the same name by González's band, JUNIP. "En Stund På Jorden" (A Moment On Earth) a song written by the Iranian-Swedish pop singer Laleh, González makes a scaled down version, tender and touching piece that is performed in Swedish. Covers is something that is starting to be a tradition for González, I really love his versions. The album ends with a short, melodic and rhythmical tune "Honey Honey" where the weaves and the birds flows in the background, so neat. "Local Valley" is a stunning album that I highly recomend to give it a spin!

Today's tune "El Invento", taken from "Local Valley", enjoy!

Emma Ruth Rundle - Return

Emma Ruth Rundle have released a new single and a video "Return" from her forthcoming album "Engine Of Hell".

Rundle has always been a multifaceted musician, equally capable of dreamy abstraction (as heard on her album Electric Guitar: One), maximalist textural explorations (see her work in Marriages, Red Sparowes, Nocturnes or collaborations with Chelsea Wolfe and THOU), and the classic singer-songwriter tradition (exemplified by Some Heavy Ocean). But on "Engine Of Hell", Rundle has opted to forego the full-band arrangements of her previous albums in favor of the austerity of a lone piano or guitar and her voice, which creates a kind of intimacy, as if we’re sitting beside Rundle on a bench, or perhaps even playing the songs ourselves. It’s an extremely up-close and personal confessional with a focus on the rich subtleties and timbre of Rundle’s graceful performances.

Emma Ruth Rundle says:“For me this album is the end of an era to the end of a decade of making records. Things DO have to change and have changed for me since I finished recording it.” In essence, "Engine Of Hell" signifies a major turning point for Rundle as both an artist and as a person. The catharsis of this type of songwriting has effectively served its purpose, and to continue ruminating on the past going forward is less of a healing process and more like picking at a scab and refusing to let it heal. This may help explain why Rundle is less than enthusiastic about divulging the details about her muses, but it doesn’t alter the fact that these songs served a purpose in their creation, and that they may continue to bring comfort to others.

Enjoy today's tune "Return" from the upcoming album "Engine Of Hell", out 11/05 on Sargent House Pre-Order / Download / Stream: https://ffm.to/err-eoh The video featuring Angel / Death - Emma Ruth Rundle, Angel / Death Double - Sarah Ray Rundle and Dove - Gaige (handled with love and care by Bright Eyes Doves).

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Can't Let Go

Robert Plant to revisit acclaimed collaboration with bluegrass-country singer Alison Krauss on new album "Raise The Roof".

Robert Plant, LED ZEPPELIN's frontman and Alison Krauss, Grammy-award winner, announced their upcoming album "Raise The Roof" and shared a new recording of Lucinda Williams' "Can't Let Go" on Thursday. Following their first collaboration in 2007 with "Rising Sand" — Krauss says she didn't feel ready to record together until she heard CALEXICO's "Quattro (World Drifts In)."

"[That was] the moment I knew we'd make another album," says Krauss, 50. "We wanted it to move. We brought other people in, other personalities within the band, and coming back together again in the studio brought a new intimacy to the harmonies."

Plant, 72, agreed.

"You hear something and you go, 'Man, listen to that song, we got to sing that song!' It's a vacation, really — the perfect place to go that you least expected to find," says Plant.

"Raise The Roof" reflects both deep-rooted influences and new revelations for the artists. For Plant's part, he was determined to introduce the English folk traditions he's loved since adolescence.

"Raise The Roof" is produced by T Bone Burnett and features 12 new recordings of songs by legends such as Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch and more.

St. Vincent – Lithium

Thursday, time for a cover!

We continue our Pride week!

"Lithium" is a song by American rock band NIRVANA. It appears as the fifth track and third single from their second album "Nevermind" (1991). Written by frontman Kurt Cobain, the song is about a man who turns to religion amid thoughts of suicide. NIRVANA first recorded "Lithium" in 1990 but then re-recorded the song the following year for "Nevermind".

Released as the third single from "Nevermind" in July 1992, "Lithium" peaked at number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also a number 1 hit in Finland and a top 5 hit in Ireland and Portugal. The accompanying music video, directed by Kevin Kerslake, is a montage of concert footage.

Annie Erin Clark (born September 28, 1982), known professionally as St. Vincent, is an American musician, singer, songwriter and producer. She began her music career as a member of the Polyphonic Spree. She was also a member of Sufjan Stevens's touring band before forming her own band in 2006. Her debut album is "Marry Me" (2007), followed by "Actor" (2009), "Strange Mercy" (2011), "St. Vincent" (2014), "Masseduction" (2017) and "Daddy's Home" (2021).

When asked during a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone whether she identified as gay or straight, Clark responded:

"I don't think about those words. I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity. I don't really identify as anything. I think you can fall in love with anybody. I don't have anything to hide but I'd rather the emphasis be on music."

Later that year, in an interview with the UK's Sunday Times, Clark elaborated:

"I'm not one for gender or sexual absolutism in the main; I fully support and engage in the spectrum."

Clark was in a relationship with Cara Delevingne from late 2014 until mid-2016.

Clark's father, Richard Clark, was convicted of one count of conspiracy, seven counts of wire fraud, five counts of securities fraud, and one count of money laundering on May 3, 2010. According to the Department of Justice, Clark and co-conspirator, G. David Gordon, controlled and manipulated the stock of two Tulsa companies, Deep Rock Oil & Gas Inc., and Global Beverage Solutions Inc., and Glen Ellyn, Illinois-based National Storm Management Group Inc. The Justice Department said: "According to evidence presented at trial, Gordon and Clark executed the scheme by obtaining a majority of the free-trading shares of stock they intended to manipulate, using fraudulent and deceptive means to acquire the stock and/or remove the trading restrictions on the shares they obtained." On October 29, 2010, he was sentenced to 15 years, 8 months in prison. The album "Daddy's Home" was in part inspired by her father's eventual release from prison.

Today's tune "Lithium" is with members of NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS and St. Vincent perform "Lithium" at the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Anohni - Drone Bomb Me

Anohni, then known as “Antony,” is known for being one of the few openly transgender Oscar nominees, with her nomination being for her song “Manta Ray.” Before her transition, the album “I Am a Bird Now” featured guest vocal appearances by Devendra Banhart and Boy George in the song "You Are My Sister," and Rufus Wainwright in "What Can I Do?"

Anohni styled as ANOHNI, is an English-born (24 October 1971) singer, composer, and visual artist. She was formerly the lead singer of the band ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS.

Anohni was born in Chichester, England. Her family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981. In 1990, she moved to Manhattan, New York to study at the Experimental Theater Wing at New York University, and in 1992 she founded the performance art collective BLACKLIPS with Johanna Constantine.

She started her musical career performing with an ensemble of NYC musicians as ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS. Their first album, "Antony And The Johnsons", was released in 2000 on David Tibet's label Durtro. Their second album, "I Am A Bird Now" (2005), was a commercial and critical success, earning her the Mercury Music Prize.

Today's tune "Drone Bomb Me" is a song from her debut solo studio album, "Hopelessness", and was released digitally on 9 March 2016 on Rough Trade Records. On the subject of the song's meaning, Anohni said: "It’s a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan, say a 9-year-old girl whose family’s been killed by a drone bomb. She is kind of looking up at the sky and she’s gotten herself to a place where she just wants to be killed by a drone bomb too". The music video was released on 9 March 2016 and features British supermodel Naomi Campbell.
