Eldkvarn - Somliga Går I Trasiga Skor

Sunday, classic time, if you look quickly at the lineup on Bråvalla festival is there unfortunately not many classic bands, find a few, of which the Swedish rock band Eldkvarn can be counted as one of them.

Eldkvarn is a Swedish rock band formed in Norrköping in 1971, consisting of brothers Plura Jonsson (the main songwriter, singer and rhythm guitarist of the band) and Carl Jonsson (lead guitarist who also writes songs and sings). The third original member is the bass player Tony Thorén, who has produced a number of albums by Eldkvarn, as well as other artists. The band is very active and widely regarded as one of the best rock bands in Sweden, with a following in other Nordic countries as well.

Eldkvarn have had some ups and downs in their career, highlights being the beginning of the 1980s, then the late 1980s with "Himmelska Dagar" and "Kungarna från Broadway", and - maybe above all - the period from "Limbo" (1999) to this day. The last period is by many Swedish music critics considered to be the best in the band's career.

In all, the band have made more than 20 full length LP and CDs.

The group received a commercial success with his interpretation of Cornelis Vreeswijk "Somliga går med trasiga skor", which is also todays tune. The tune is taken from the album "Den flygande holländaren", a music album released in 1988, where Swedish artists perform songs written by Cornelis Vreeswijk. Today's video is filmed in the subway. Anyone traveling with SL instead of taking the car makes a small contribution to the environment. As a thank you offered SL its travelers on a surprise concert by Eldkvarn.

Walking Papers - The Whole World's Watching

Walking Papers is a blues-rock band formed by Jeff Angell of The Missionary Position and Barrett Martin formerly of the Screaming Trees, two long-serving veterans of the Seattle music scene. Jeff previously sang and played guitar for the bands Post Stardom Depression and The Missionary Position, and Barrett, a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, played for grunge pioneers Skin Yard and Screaming Trees, as well as the super groups Mad Season and Tuatara.

The band played its first Seattle shows initially as a duo with Jeff on guitar and Barrett on drums, but soon added former Guns N' Roses Duff McKagan on bass to make their official debut as a trio on July 22nd, 2012. The Missionary Position's Benjamin Anderson brought his keyboard talents from the studio to the live stage, evolving the band into a quartet. Pearl Jam and Mad Season guitarist Mike McCready has been known to make guest appearances on stage as the lead guitar player.

Walking Papers self-titled debut album features a stellar cast of musicians who have each added their own musical voices to the sound: Vocals and Guitar come from Jeff; Drums, Vibraphone and Backing Vocals from Barrett; Electric Bass from Duff McKagan; two blistering guitar solos from Mike McCready; elegant keyboards from Benjamin Anderson, and soulful horn arrangements from Dave Carter (Trumpet), Dan Spalding (Baritone Sax), and Ed Ulman (Trombone). The album was recorded by Catherine Ferrante at Avast Studios in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino at Soundhouse in Seattle. Album mastering was done by Chris Hanzsek at Hanzsek Audio.

Walking Papers show that a great song can be conveyed with thundering drums, rumbling bass, and a howling guitar just as easily as it can with percolating marimbas and shimmering vibraphone. The songs on this album can stand alone as individual stories, but taken together as a whole, they convey a much larger narrative with tales of wandering souls, the collisions of will, and the dark beauty of the American heart.

Their self-titled debut album, produced by Angell and Martin and also mixed by Jack Endino, was released on October 2, 2012 and featured contributions by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.

Walking Papers will play this evening at Bråvalla festival at 20:00 on the Red Stage.

Todays tune "Whole World's Watching" taken from their self titled debut on Loud And Proud Records (out August 6th, 2013).

Fergie Frederiksen - Last Battle of My War

Frontiers Records did announce the release of Fergie Frederiksen new solo album "Any Given Moment" on August 23 in Europe and August 27 in North America. The excellent reviews surrounding the release of his latest album Happiness Is The Road in 2011 (with UK’s leading AOR magazine Fireworks calling it “Quite stunning!”) rebuilt Fergie’s trust in himself and therefore pretty soon another new album was in the works. This time, Fergie collaborated with Italian producer Alessandro Del Vecchio and with the help of his songwriting, along with contributions from other world class musicians as Bruce Gaitsch (Richard Marx) and Robert Sall (Work of Art, W.E.T.) on guitars among others, Fergie put his mark on another true Melodic Rock gem of an album! “This album was a pleasure to record. Ale and his talents as an engineer and producer shine” says Fergie. “It is always great when you make “life long friends” doing what we love to do. He’s become a dear friend and a great artist. I look forward to working with him again”.

Fergie Frederiksen (born May 15, 1951, Grand Rapids, Michigan) is an American rock singer whose career peaked during the 1980's, having brief stints with several notable rock bands including Angel, Le Roux and Toto. He first broke out in the mid to late 1970s fronting Chicago pomp rock bands MSFunk and Trillion, and was also a background vocalist for Survivor. He contributed to three hit singles in three consecutive years with three different bands: Survivor's "American Heartbeat" in 1982, Le Roux's "Carrie's Gone" in 1983 and Toto's "Stranger in Town" in 1984.

Todays tune "Last Battle of My War" is taken from the forthcoming album "Any Given Moment" - Out on August 23rd in Europe and August 27th in North America. Here to show the world that Fergie’s vocal abilities are still amazing.

Fallen Trees - Killing The Groove

Fallen Trees is a rock band from Malmö, Sweden, were formed in early 2010 by Emanuel Arvanitis and David Karlsson.

The band have released two EP’s Fallen Trees and Silence Is A Deafening Sound without having a company backing them up. After that they signed a deal with German indie label Stargazer Records.

Experimenting with the sound of the acoustic instruments, letting the sound go through effect pedals and amplifiers, they found a new Fallen Trees with more energy. The perfect blend between the organic and the electric. And after 150 hours in the studio Dystofuzz was born. The album was released in January 2013 followed by singles and videos.

Artist and friend Anton Svensson transformed the theme of the album into drawings used for the artwork. Simultaneously an effect pedal with the same name was launched, made by Moody Sounds.

Dystofuzz is a story about a world, not so different from our own. A world where we put on our masks and pretend we like what we see. It takes us through the darkness of a dystopia where there is little hope of salvation. But don’t despair. Take of your mask and dance. Lets’ make this dancefloor shake, and make it fly. It’s worth a try.

Todays tune "Killing the Groove" is taken from the latest album "Dystofuzz". Video made by Christofer Nilsson and Philip Juliusson at Timbermen Productions

When the recording of the album ”DystoFuzz” started Fallen Trees searched high and low for a sound that would fit the dystopic framework of the record. ”DystoFuzz” is a record about non stop surveillance, a masked people and dull, pre-defined lives but aslo about hope and freedom. The sound should be powerful and allmighty, yet useable om the dancefloor. Some kind of dark fuzz pedal*.They contacted Albin Roslund, head of the custom effect pedal company ”Moody Sounds” and he took on the challenge with enthusiasm.

”The Dysto Fuzz pedal is the result of Fallen Trees looking for a certain sound for their new record. The idea was a sound unique enough to stand out in the crowd of fuzz pedals, and also that people should be able to use it themselves. The release of the record will be combined with the release of the Dysto Fuzz kit, a circuit board with components that you solder together yourself and then connect your guitar (or whatever you want) through. The fuzz that the band liked the most was a copy of the sixties classic ”Tycho Brahe Octavia”, the effect Jimi Hendrix used on the song Purple Haze and many others. What really hit the spot was combining this classic fuzz with a ”Twin T Filter”, a filter that sounds like something out of a Moog synthezier. With this everyone was happy, the band had a great and unique fuzz pedal and I had a fun yet simple circuit to work with” – Albin Roslund, Moody Sounds

*A fuzz pedal is a classic guitar effect used by numerous guitarists including Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and many others.

Black Sabbath - End of the Beginning

New week and it's time to present the Record Of The Week. This this week's album might be given for most, an album that surprised me where expectations were low.

The album I am talking about is the new Black Sabbath album "13". That 75-percent of the original Black Sabbath line-up, including the odd and confused Ozzy Osbourne on vocals have teamed up with the old friends Tony Iommi & Geezer Butler (but not the Drummer Bill Ward), behind the drum kit we find the ex Rage Against the Machine dude Brad Wilk, doing his best Bill Ward. The album sounds very good and the songs keeps a high Sabbath standard for these old dudes. The bottom line is this is a decent album, but not mind-blowing. It sounds Black Sabbath and they play well and the album is full of life, Iommi does play some really interesting stuff on the album. Although Ozzy's voice is prolly auto-tuned it's entirely forgiveable because this is actually really good. How this will be live remains after all to see.

Todays tune is the opener "End of the Beginning", a slow and doomish tune.

Pugh Rogefeldt - Små Lätta Moln

Sunday, a rather special day today, for it is Thetania's birthday. So we are celebrating her with a "Hooray Hooray" and dedicate today's song to her. It was much like "Little Light Clouds" that I was feeling the first time I met her. Happy Birthday Thetania, Love you girl!

Today's tune "Små Lätta Moln" (Little light cloud) is a song from 1969, written by Pugh Rogefeldt. It is on his debut album "Ja, dä ä dä"(1969), but also on the live album "Ett steg till"(1975).

The song was recorded at Metronome Studios in June 1969 with Anders Burman as a producer. Participants were Rogefeldt on guitar and vocals, George Wadenius on guitar and bass, Janne "Loffe" Carlsson on drums. Techniques for recording was Michael B. Tretow. Todays video is a live recording from Umeå at Scharinska villan 2008, enjoy!

Rush - Working Man

Now we've been dancing around the pole, erm there was no pole this year, oh well, but i done some bbq, eating herring and potatoes, all this mixed up with some alcoholic beverage at a small place called Broby. It was a pleasant wonderful day with friends where many laughs mixed with bath bombs in the pool, golfcar rally and horny dogs that tried to set on anything that moved. The evening ended with music in all its forms. and today was probably half of Sweden still in bed :) Because the roads was pretty empty on the way home.

So a band that was played pretty often during this evening was a band called Rush, so a tune with them suites fine today.

Working Man is a song by rock band Rush from its debut album, Rush.

The middle of the song features an extensive instrumental jam with two guitar solos by Alex Lifeson, and freestyle bass playing by Geddy Lee. It was voted 94th in Guitar World magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitar solos.

Donna Halper, then a disc jockey and music director at WMMS FM in Cleveland, Ohio is credited with getting Rush noticed in the United States by playing "Working Man" on the air. The song proved particularly popular in the working-class town. The response resulted in a record deal for the band, which gave her special thanks for her part in their early history and dedicated their first two albums to her.

The song features the band's original drummer and co-founder, John Rutsey, who was replaced by Neil Peart. On the 1976 live album All the World's a Stage, the song segues into "Finding My Way" and one of Neil Peart's drum solos.

"Working Man" was also featured in episodes of the television shows, My Name is Earl, That 70's Show and Supernatural. It was also featured in the 2011 film Goon (film).

Todays tune is taken from the debut album with Rush, but the Video is filmed during the Time Machine Tour!

Siena Root - The Summer Is Old

Today, we celebrate Midsummer in Sweden and we at Tune Of The Day wish a stunning day.

Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 21 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. Midsummer is especially important in the cultures of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltics where it is the most celebrated holiday apart from Christmas and New Year's Eve

Siena Root is a group and an experimental project with its roots in analogue old school rock music. The foundation is a trio from Stockholm that's been around since the late ‘90s. The sound is classic but yet original, founded on heavy organ, strat leads, bass riffing and big drums. It is also often enriched with bluesy soulful vocals, indian classical instruments and psychedelic vibes.

Siena Root is well known for its unique spectra of appearances, its many great guest artists, and its different interpretations of rock music. It's a constant transforming group, ranging from acoustic sitar to distorted hurdy gurdy. Yet, with a foundation in a traditional rock trio, and a sound rooted in late 60s analogue music. Don't expect to experience the same Siena Root show twice.

In the sense that blues is blue, hard rock is black, and reggae is pan African coloured, this music has the colour of siena. It is a warm colour, originally from the muddy roots of the earth. Because this sound has roots that go deep, it was also natural to let root be a part of the bands name.

Five full length albums, one DVD and one 7” single have been released so far, each one marking the development and refinement of the bands diverse style. Through touring the music has developed in such a way, that jamming and improvising has become an essential element, always keeping you on the edge of your seat. A Siena Root concert is dramatic and exciting, visually, as well as emotionally. It's a dynamic rootrock experience.

Through the years, all these fine musicians have performed with the band, on stage or in the studio:

Anna Myrsten - Vocals
Anna Sandberg – Wind instruments
Anurag Choudhari - Bansuri
Chrissi Jost - Vocals
Cecilia Ringkvist - Vocals
Erik "Erkan" Lundin - Flute & Guitar
Erik Pettersson - Organ

Mikaela Samuelsson - Vocals
Oskar Lundström - Vocals & Organ

30 Seconds To Mars - Up In The Air

Yesterday did the American rock band "30 Seconds to Mars" visit Sweden for a show at Gröna Lund. Gig was a bit odd, however, perfectly suited for a theme park like this. What was on the agenda for this show, were balloons, dolphins and confetti spiced with amusement rides of the park's attractions.

The Los Angeles band was formed in 1998. Since 2007, the band has consisted of actor Jared Leto (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Shannon Leto (drums, percussion) and Tomo Miličević (lead guitar, keyboards). Following the departure of Matt Wachter (now of Angels & Airwaves) in 2007, Tim Kelleher became the bassist for the group, performing live only with both Jared and Miličević recording bass for studio recordings, while Braxton Olita (keyboards) was added to the touring lineup in 2009. Previously, the group also featured guitarists Solon Bixler (now of Great Northern) and Kevin Drake (now of Polaroid Kiss).

To date, 30 Seconds to Mars have released four studio albums – 30 Seconds to Mars (2002), A Beautiful Lie (2005), This Is War (2009), Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013) and three extended plays – AOL Sessions Undercover (2007), To the Edge of the Earth (2008), and MTV Unplugged: 30 Seconds to Mars (2011).

30 Seconds to Mars' music has been associated mostly with new prog, progressive metal and alternative rock, but they have also included emo, screamo, space rock and synthrock into their music. They have been compared to Pink Floyd (who were an influence on their work) and Tool because of their use of philosophical and spiritual lyrics, concept albums and their use of experimental music.

Here are some pictures, some are pretty odd but still it's something to share:

Just before the gig the guys took a last ride - Up In The Air!

And after the gig another ride!

Todays tune "Up In The Air" suites perfect for today, it's taken from the latest album "Love Lust Faith + Dreams". The Video is a short film by Bartholomew Cubbins.
