Hüsker Dü - Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely" is a song by HÜSKER Dü from their album "Candy Apple Grey". The song was written by Grant Hart. It was released both as an EP in the United States and as a single in the United Kingdom in March 1986. HÜSKER Dü filmed a promotional video for the song, which garnered the band some play on MTV.

HÜSKER Dü was an American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist/vocalist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. HÜSKER Dü first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, later crossing over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs.

Following the release of three LPs and an EP on independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed Zen Arcade in 1984, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986 to release their final two studio albums. HÜSKER Dü disbanded in January 1988. Mould later released two solo albums before forming SUGAR in the early 1990s, while Hart released a solo album on SST and later formed NOVA MOB.

After the respective bands broke up in the mid-1990s, Mould and Hart continued doing solo work, the latter until his death in 2017. Norton was initially less active musically after HÜSKER Dü and focused on being a restaurateur instead. He returned to the recording industry in 2006.

Today's tune "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely" is taken from the fifth album "Candy Apple Grey", released in 1986. It was their first major label album, though Warner Bros. "Candy Apple Grey" also marks the completion of the band's transition from hardcore punk to a more well-rounded sonic style which would later come to be known as alternative rock or college rock. As usual, Bob Mould and Grant Hart individually wrote tracks on the album. While the band's earlier, more frenetic style is still evident, "Candy Apple Grey" also features more introverted, toned-down material, including a relatively large amount of acoustic guitar.

Enjoy today's classic!

Rose City Band - Wildflowers

ROSE CITY BAND started purely as a recording project, with Ripley Johnson’s role mostly obscured for the self-titled debut album. Ripley Johnson most known as bandleader of WOODEN SHJIPS and one half of MOON DUO.

With ROSE CITY BAND, Johnson’s songwriting and beautiful guitar lines take center stage, the veil of psychedelia notably drawn back. The vocal would be recognizable to any WOODEN SHJIPS fan. Shimmering guitar lines are free to shine, buoyed by driving rhythms. New to the mix are arrangements and instruments drawn directly from classic country, resulting in songs with more than a hint of twang.

The latest release is named "Summerlong", born of Johnson’s own fondness for the season, delivers an emotional lift—an expression akin to the joy of getting out there on a warm day, be it gathering for a BBQ, hopping onto a bike, leaping into a swimming hole, or simply reading in a park.

"Summerlong" was released with no promotion in the style of private press records, it was a liberating act, a focus on music without any expectations. Explaining it with a chuckle, Johnson elaborates, “I always would threaten to my friends that I’m gonna start a country rock band so I can retire and just play down at the pub every Thursday night during happy hour. I love being able to tour and travel, but I also like the idea of having a local band … more of a social music experience.”

"Summerlong" was mixed by John McEntire (STEREOLAB, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, TORTOISE) at his newly minted Portland Soma Studios and mastered by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Mastering, also based in Portland.

Today's tune "Wildflowers" taken from "Summerlong", enjoy!

Einstürzende Neubauten - Alles In Allem

After more than 12 years, EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN released thier long-awaited new studio album "Alles In Allem" translated as 'All in All'. The album marks the quintessence of the band’s output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research bya very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld.

EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, ("Collapsing New Builds") is a German experimental music group, originally formed in West Berlin in 1980. The group is currently composed of founder members Blixa Bargeld (lead vocals; guitar; keyboard) and N.U. Unruh (custom-made instruments; percussion; vocals), long-time contributor Alexander Hacke (bass; vocals), plus Jochen Arbeit (guitar; vocals), and Rudolf Moser (custom-built instruments; percussion; vocals), who both joined the line-up in 1997.

One of their trademarks is the use of custom-built instruments, predominantly made out of scrap metal and building tools, and noises, in addition to standard musical instruments. Their early albums were unremittingly harsh, with Bargeld's vocals shouted and screamed above a din of banging and scraping metal percussion. Subsequent recordings found the group's sound growing somewhat more conventional, yet still containing many unorthodox elements.

This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. Check out the title tune from the bands latest release, presents an incomparable band that defies categorization to create a genre all its own.

Today's tune "Alles In Allem" it the title tune from EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTENs most compulsively lisenable album to date, enjoy!

Joan Baez - Eleanor Rigby

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Eleanor Rigby" is a song by the English rock band THE BEATLES from their 1966 album "Revolver". It was also issued on a double A-side single, paired with "Yellow Submarine". The song was written primarily by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney.

The song continued the transformation of THE BEATLES from a mainly rock and roll- and pop-oriented act to a more experimental, studio-based band. With a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin and lyrics providing a narrative on loneliness, "Eleanor Rigby" broke sharply with popular music conventions, both musically and lyrically. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic cites the band's "singing about the neglected concerns and fates of the elderly" on the song as "just one example of why THE BEATLES' appeal reached so far beyond the traditional rock audience".

Paul McCartney came up with the melody of "Eleanor Rigby" as he experimented on his piano. However, the original name of the protagonist that he chose was not Eleanor Rigby, but Miss Daisy Hawkins. The singer-composer Donovan reported that he heard McCartney play it to him before it was finished, with completely different lyrics. In 1966, McCartney recalled how he got the idea for his song:

I was sitting at the piano when I thought of it. The first few bars just came to me, and I got this name in my head ... "Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church". I don't know why. I couldn't think of much more so I put it away for a day. Then the name "Father McCartney" came to me, and all the lonely people. But I thought that people would think it was supposed to be about my Dad sitting knitting his socks. Dad's a happy lad. So I went through the telephone book and I got the name "McKenzie"

McCartney said he came up with the name "Eleanor" from actress Eleanor Bron, who had starred with THE BEATLES in the film "Help!". "Rigby" came from the name of a store in Bristol, "Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers", which he noticed while seeing his girlfriend of the time, Jane Asher, act in The Happiest Days of Your Life. He recalled in 1984, "I just liked the name. I was looking for a name that sounded natural. 'Eleanor Rigby' sounded natural."

The American singer, songwriter, musician, and activis Joan Baez sings the song "Eleanor Rigby" from her 1967 Vanguard album "Joan". This song about loneliness and death was something of a shock to the pop audience of the time, but the song has been recorded by over sixty singers ranging from Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin to Ethel the Frog and Alice Cooper. Evidently McCartney had lonely older people in mind when writing the song, but the video shows a range of ages. The last part of the video has photos of the gravestone of the "real" Eleanor Rigby that may have influenced the name of this song, the statue of her in Liverpool, and McCartney.

The album "Joan" having exhausted the standard voice/guitar folksong format by 1967, Baez collaborated with arranger-conductor Peter Schickele (with whom she'd worked on the 1966 Christmas album, Noël), on an album of orchestrated covers of mostly then-current pop and rock and roll songs. Works by Donovan, Paul Simon, Tim Hardin, THE BEATLES, and Richard Fariña were included, as well as selections by Jacques Brel and Edgar Allan Poe.

Enjoy today's cover by Joan Baez

Black Elephant - Seven Swords

Monday, a new week and it's time for another "Record Of The Week".

The planets have aligned, and space itself has opened up to grace us with the heavy roll of BLACK ELEPHANT's "Seven Swords".

The Italian four-piece fuzzmongers mark 10 years of cooperative corporeal existence in 2020 and last checked in from their native Savona in Summer 2018 with the aptly-titled "Cosmic Blues", read about it here! and two years and an entire lifetime later they're back with the second collection of classic-minded heavy groovers, picking the best the '70s, '90s and '10s had to offer in riffery and melding spacey blowouts with desert-hued hooks.

"Seven Swords" is a well made album, the production is really nice, perfectly of the fatness is the bass line and the drums and the fuzziness and a glorious scream in the guitars makes the music very enjoable.

From the solid album opener "Berta’s Flame" that takes your hand with a firm grip, throws you into a cosmic universe that you float around in and feel the rythms tickles your body and you almost lose consciousness until "The Last March Of Yokozuna" takes over with it's gentle guitar which caresses your senses so incredibly beautifully. The heaviness is back when it's time to gear up in "Yayoi Kusama", fuzzy distorted guitar and the Italian vocals sets a great touch on this number. It's wandering further on half pace in "Mihara" with some attacks of melodic and stylish guitars. "Red Sun And Blues Sun" increases the pace a few steps. The blusey rocker "Seppuku" gives the record another face, cool. The near-nine-minute album closer "Govinda" ends this thirty four minutes cosmic trip. "Seven Swords" is a great fuzzy psychedelic rock album that suits all Heavy rockers out there.

Sum: Ready for some cosmic fuzz, then "Seven Swords" it is entirely in your home area.

"Seven Swords" was released August 21, 2020 on Small Stone Records. Recorded and mixed by Giulio Farinelli. Recorded at Green Fog Studio, Genoa, Italy. Mastered by Chris Goosman at Baseline Audio Labs, Ann Arbor, MI. Cover and Design by Robin Gnista.

BLACK ELEPHANT is:
Alessio Caravelli: guitar and vocals
Massimiliano Giacosa: guitar
Marcello Destefanis: bass
Simone Brunzu: drums

Don Mclean - And I Love You So

Sunday, time for a classic.

"And I Love You So" is a popular song written by folk singer and guitarist Don McLean and released on his 1970 debut album, "Tapestry". Its chorus features an unusual rhyming scheme for a popular song: A-B-B-A versus the usual A-B-C (or A)-B.

"And I Love You So" was a 1973 hit for singer Perry Como on his RCA Victor album of the same name, "And I Love You So", reaching No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It would be the last of his many popular recordings, dating back to 1943, to reach the Top 40. It also spent one week at No. 1 on the easy listening chart. It reached No. 2 in South Africa and in Britain, the record reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart on RCA Records and remained on the chart for 35 weeks (the longest of his hits in the UK).

Como also recorded a Spanish version, titled Y te quiero así.

The song has been recorded by many other artists in the years since McLean's original version:

The song was recorded by Elvis Presley at RCA studio C in Hollywood, California, on March 11, 1975. It was released on his album Today, and Presley used it in almost every live show until his death.
Harry Connick Jr. included the song on his 2009 album Your Songs.
Sergio Franchi covered this song on his 1976 DynaHouse album 20 Magnificent Songs.
A Filipino film starring Bea Alonzo, Sam Milby, and Derek Ramsay with the same name used the song on its official soundtrack.

In 1999, Glen Campbell recorded the song on his album My Hits and Love Songs.
Roch Voisine covered the song on his album Americana, in 2008.
Claude François performed a French version, "Et je t'aime tellement", in 1977.
Other performers who have recorded the song include: Rick Astley, Shirley Bassey, Bobby Goldsboro, Tom T. Hall, Emmylou Harris, Engelbert Humperdinck, Howard Keel, Johnny Mathis, Nana Mouskouri, Olivia Newton-John, Jim Nabors, Helen Reddy, Perry Como, and Bobby Vinton.

Today's tune "And I Love You So" is taken from the debut album "Tapestry", the clip is filmed live Cesarea, Israel. January 1979.

Cinemechanica - Hang Up The Spurs

With over a decade of experience under its belt, you'd expect Athens, GA's CINEMECHANICA to have a pile of records completed. It'd be entirely reasonable to expect that the decade between the band’s groundbreaking debut "The Martial Arts" and its upcoming self-titled LP would have been separated by more than a single EP, 2008’s double-drum experiment "Rivals". Sure, that'd be reasonable – but CINEMECHANICA is anything but.

While the band cut its teeth as pioneers of the region’s millennial math-rock landscape, those very chompers have now worn into predatorial fangs through years of exhaustive performance, tireless composition, and – most recently – a new level of aggressive sneer honed by Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE) at GodCity Studios.

CINEMECHANICA is centered around the constant trio of guitarist Bryant Williamson, bassist Joel Hatstat, and drummer Mike Albanese (MASERATI). For this year’s release, the band has collaborated with guitarist/vocalist Jordan Olivera (MANRAY), while those live duties will be carried out by Bryan Aiken (LAZER/WULF). The group tends to plot its music meticulously and often works for months for an output of seconds. For lesser bands, that may be overkill; for CINEMECHANICA, it’s a case of intense dedication to its craft that makes for line-drive focus in the studio and on stage. There’s no doubt that storied engineer Kevin Ratterman (YOUNG WIDOWS, MY MORNING JACKET) at Louisville's La La Land could tell this from day one, and by the time Ballou mixed this decade-gestating monster of a record, it was poised to stand easily alongside the man’s legendary output.

Today's tune is the opening blast of “Hang Up The Spurs”, taken from the self title album, released September 23, 2016, enjoy!

David Bowie - China Girl

Thursday, time for a cover.

"China Girl" is a song written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie during their years in Berlin, first appearing on Pop's debut solo album "The Idiot" (1977). The song became more widely known when it was re-recorded by Bowie, who released it as the second single from his most commercially successful album, "Let's Dance" (1983).

But on the other hand, they wrote the song together, so it's not really a cover. Bowie also produced Pop's version.

Paul Trynka, the author of the David Bowie biography, Starman, explains the song was inspired by Iggy Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a Vietnamese woman, as a metaphor for his STOOGES career.

Production-wise the original recording that appeared on "The Idiot" is raw and unpolished compared to Bowie's hit remake in 1983.

Nile Rodgers, the producer of David Bowie's 1983 version of the song, offered his own interpretation of the lyrics: "I figured China Girl was about doing drugs ... because China is China White which is heroin, girl is cocaine. I thought it was a song about speedballing. I thought, in the drug community in New York, coke is girl, and heroin is boy. So then I proceeded to do this arrangement which was ultra pop. Because I thought that, being David Bowie, he would appreciate the irony of doing something so pop about something so taboo. And what was really cool was that he said 'I love that!'.

The music video, featuring New Zealand model Geeling Ng, was directed by David Mallet and shot mainly in the Chinatown district of Sydney, Australia. Along with his previous single's video for "Let's Dance" with the critique of racism in Australia, Bowie described the video as a "very simple, very direct" statement against racism. The video consciously parodies Asian female stereotypes. It depicted as a hypermasculine protagonist in an interracial romance. The original video release includes the two lying naked in the surf (a visual reference to the film From Here to Eternity). Unedited versions were banned from New Zealand and some other countries at the time. The uncensored version was issued on the 1984 "Video EP" issued by Sony on Betamax, VHS and LaserDisc. Versions of the video included on subsequent video and DVD compilations (including EMI/Virgin's Best of Bowie) are censored to remove the nudity. The original video went on to win an MTV video award for Best Male Video.

Enjoy today's version of "China Girl", taken from Bowie's album "Let's Dance", the single was released 31 May 1983.

V**gra Boys - Welfare Jazz

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Welfare Jazz" is the second album from the Swedish post-punk band V**AGRA BOYS from Stockholm, led by Sebastian Murphy features production from Daniel Fagerström, Pelle Gunnerfeldt, Matt Sweeney, Justin and Jeremiah Raisen.

The band was formed in 2015, with several members coming from the bands LES BIG BYRD, PIG EYES, NINE, NITAD and NEU-RONZ. In 2018, they released their first album, "Street Worms", read about it here!. The twisted jazzy post-punk story about worms, sports and sneaky things in the basement and big use of black humor and satire got thier debut to reach up to be "Record Of The Week" 2018. Now it's time again for a new story by these sludgy felows in V**AGRA BOYS.

"Welfare Jazz" was released in January 2021. The front man Sebastian Murphy wrote these songs at a time when he had been in a long-term relationship, taking drugs every day, and being an asshole. Sebastian Murphy explains of the band’s upcoming album, Welfare Jazz. “I didn’t really realise what an asshole I was until it was too late, and a lot of the record has to do with coming to terms with the fact that I’d set the wrong goals for myself.”

"Welfare Jazz" is a forty minute journey diveded into 13 parts in their own unique brand of twisted jazzy post-punk where they travel true a life of a masculin nutcase. As in the opening tune "Ain't Nice" he is a terrorizing asshole and a shitty boyfriend making fool of himself in a very groovy atmospehere of sounds that is very easy to dig. The jazzy saxophone appears at frequent intervals like in the interlude "Cold Play", the oddly strang piece "Secret Canine Agent”. "Toad" & "To The Country" is a groovy country-infused piece. The bass driven "Into The Sun", where Murphy sings with incredible feeling about winning back his dearest heart. In the synth driven number "Creature" they celebrating lowlife, listen to it below. Or the punkish cover of the late John Prine‘s "In Spite Of Ourselves". The instrumental "6 Shooter" is a cool piece with some electronica and KRAFTWERK sounds. To the jesus christ "I Feel Alive", a great tune indeed. The "Girls & Boys" offers a eight's disco in a punkish way. The album is full of Zappa like sounds, plops and drops, squared-off synths, sneaky guitar that makes tis a really fun listen. That V**AGRA BOYS is here to stay is clear, their punkish attitude will capture many new fans over time. I like this, so will you.

If you surf in to the band’s website, you’re greeted by "Bob The Fortune Dog" (their version of a Magic Cookie), ask a question and get a stupid answer. And you will also notice to topline banner "Enter your credit card details now!" and "Support Capitalism Today, Buy Merchnadise!". Kinda funny!

Sum: You need this!

Today's tune "Creatures" is taken from "Welfare Jazz", enjoy!

Balothizer - Antifa Syrtos

BALOTHIZER are a heavy psych power trio who describe their renditions of Greek island Crete’s traditional music as “post- Cretan”. Their following however has come up with a tagline that defines their concoction of thrash metal with acid-blotted Cretan folk… Cretan Music From Hell!

Crete’s musical tradition can with no doubt be described as prosperous and vibrant. Prosperous because it is overwhelmed with a variety of musical timbres; and vibrant, because it still continues to frame the every day life of its residents. Cretan history is engraved in its musical tradition.

Crete has suffered many conquerors; each leaving behind them a pebble, which in time, became part of the island's musical mosaic. The Ancient Greeks left their love for nature and pagan traditions, the Byzantines left introversion and medieval elements; the Venetians left their refined tastes, the Moors left behind them a pirate mentality and the Ottomans left an oriental flavour. After centuries of conquests, the inhabitants of the island developed their own unique musical character - carved from the roughness of rocky mountains, the energy of sea waves, the belligerent mood of the guerrilla, the sorrow and pain of romantic encounters and a Pagan's love of nature. In addition to this unique musical character, the Cretan People also displayed their tremendous fighting spirit by defending their beloved island against the threat of fascism during WWII. The sentiments of anti fascism still live large in the Cretan Spirit. This constantly evolving blend of cultures, over a period of 5000 years, gave birth to the instrument that is pivotal to the music that is so typical of this region;

The Cretan Lute: A steel string bass Mandola played with a highly percussive strumming style. During the 1970's, the musicians of Crete established a trend of combining Cretan lute with valve amplification, and as a consequence this highly aggressive and distinctly resonant sound was born. The very fibre and make up of Cretan culture has so much in common with the modern sentiments of Punk & Rock'n'Roll that it became an irresistible temptation to this multifarious trio of musicians.
