Greenleaf – Hear The Rivers

Monday, time for "Record Of The Week".

The Borlänge rockers GREENLEAF are back with a new full-length album. These Swedish stoners have been visiting Tune Of The Day on regular basis. GREENLEAF started as a side project in late 1999 by Tommi Holappa, Daniel Lidén and Bengt Bäcke. Since then they have released an impressive seven albums and one EP, where the latest is "Hear The Rivers". The category "Stoner Rock" that these guys have burn marked into their flesh can be heard on the new album even if the wings are wider than usual, the styles vary from dirty classic rock riffing, heavy blues rock, swampy desert rock to stoner rock. The sound is both characteristic and personal, heavenly groovy, easily identifiable and very catchy, you know, hard to sit still.

"Hear The Rivers" open up with the energetic "Let It Out!", drums and a fat bass-line signed Hans Fröhlich, along with a fuzzy and catchy riff by Tommi Holappa kicks this steam packed tune-up to the blue, stuck in the bubble and you just want to get out!. "Sweet Is The Sound" an old-school bluesy soul piece, riffy and far out, brilliantly performed by the band. "A Point Of A Secret" is a drum driving tune where Sebastian Olsson keeps the tempo, catchy melody with personal lyrics, great vocals from Arvid Hällagård and smart riffing. "Good Ol’ Goat" is a real stomper, knocking drum intro, bluesy and soaring vocals, distorted heavy swampy blues with a great swing. "The Rumble And The Weight" fuzzy riffing with a hypnotic and intoxicating rumbling melody that will trance you right on the spot. "We Are The Prawns" a slower piece, with great vocal performance and deep lyrics. The sharp straightforward rocker "Oh My Bones", pretty solid tune. "In The Caverns Below" is another powerful tune, with terrific grooviness, riff climbing and energetic drumming. Another generic rocker is "High Fever", that makes your body move every muscle, very dangerous tune to play in the car with its high energy and glowing guitars. The last tune, the album closer "The Rivers Lullaby", an eight-minute psychedelic anthem, bluesy with a brilliant vocals, light fingers with thoughtful sweep on the guitar strings to some real sludgy riffs, emotional drumming, fat and chunky basslines with a bombastic ending makes this tune an adventurous experience, a brilliant choice to end a marvellous album.

"Hear The Rivers" is a solid album with a superb musically handcraft, greatly produced and well written. The album was released through Napalm Records November 9th. The album was produced by former GREENLEAF- and DOZER drummer Karl Daniel Lidén (CRAFT, BLOODBATH, CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX). The bearded dudes will hit European roads in November.

Sum: "Hear The Rivers" is an absolute gem of an album. Don't miss this!

Today's tune "Good Ol' Goat", taken from "Hear The Rivers", enjoy!

Slayer - Angel Of Death

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman. They detail the Nazi physician Josef Mengele's human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

Although the lyrics describe Mengele's abuses rather than endorsing them, "Angel of Death" led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism against the band, which they vigorously denied but which followed them throughout their early career. Despite the controversy and the resulting delay in the release of "Reign in Blood", the song remains a live favourite and has appeared on all of SLAYERs live albums.

The song has been described as highly influential in the development of thrash metal or speed metal, and is highly regarded by some critics; AllMusic's Steve Huey called it a classic and the album "the pinnacle of speed metal". The half-time riff was sampled by PUBLIC ENEMY in their 1988 song "She Watch Channel Zero?!."

Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die

Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

The show at Hovet with SLAYER was a pure thrash metal fest, 3 great support acts like LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY as you surely notice already, that I could not resist playing them all here.

SLAYERs show is the far best I have ever seen and I believe I have seen them more than 10 times over all these years. SLAYERs show at Hovet is the best live performance of the year by far. But in the other hand I have missed many because of to much work and when I day off comes I prefer to relax and rest.

The setlist of SLAYER was the regular one, playing the same tunes at every stop on this tour. The pyro was pure magic, great work Pyrotek! Nice to work with you guys again.

On December 2, 2018, Holt announced that he would not perform the remainder of the band's European tour to be with his dying father. Former MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel would fill in for him as a result. Two days to learn all the riff, amazing, as he pulled it off terrific.

The show ends with standing ovations for almost 10 minutes when Tom Araya stands still in front of the audience and receiving cheers and applause without adversity, he moves slowly along the stage edge and sucks in the cheers, he is the happiest man at this moment, he ends everything by reading a note in Swedish saying ”Jag kommer sakna er alla” (I will miss all of you), so powerful and heartbreaking.

And all I can say is that we will miss you SLAYER!

Setlist from the show at Hovet.

Here is a classic live clip.

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

The official music video for the album's third single, "Overlord", premiered on June 30, 2015 "Overlord", the new Jorge Torres-Torres-directed video from Richmond, Virginia-based metallers LAMB OF GOD, can be seen below.

Some LOG picks from the show.

Setlist from Hovet.

Anthrax - Indians

"Indians" is a single by thrash metal band ANTHRAX, the tune is taken from the album, "Among the Living". It is one of ANTHRAXs most famous songs, appearing on their best-of albums: "Return of the Killer A's, Madhouse: The Very Best of Anthrax" and the Anthology: "No Hit Wonders (1985–1991)".

It also appears in Guitar Hero game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and as downloadable content for the Rock Band series and Rocksmith 2014.

The tune was, of course, played on the show a few days back when they supported SLAYER on their farewell tour.

The setlist from Hovet:

Obituary - Redneck Stomp

Holy Moses, my head is thrashed. What an evening at Hovet, four strong bands on one stage, 3 of them supporting the farewell of the classic thrashers' SLAYER.

The first support band was the American death metal legends OBITUARY, early slot but almost half full venue even if they started an hour after doors. 30 minutes set made them play the best from their catalogue.

OBITUARY started their set with their lovely instrumental "Redneck Stomp", a tune taken from the sixth album "Frozen In Time". It was released on July 12, 2005, and was the band's first album in eight years since 1997's "Back from the Dead", and the last to feature guitarist Allen West.

OBITUARY setlist from Hovet, Sweden December 5th.

Straight to Hell

Myrkur - Juniper

Danish composer, vocalist and classically trained multi-instrumentalist MYRKUR unveils two ethereal new studio tracks with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST, PARADISE LOST).

MYRKUR is Amalie Bruun. The new EP Juniper is made at Orgone Studios in Bedfordshire, England. The album's B-Side, "Bonden og Kragen", is a solo reinterpretation of a traditional Danish folk song from the 1600s. Together, both tracks exquisitely display MYRKURs eclectic sound and captivating personality. A limited edition of the 7" will coincide with the digital release, December 7th on Relapse Records.

Pre-Order via Relapse.com Here: http://bit.ly/myrkurjuniper

Today's tune is the stirring video for the record's title tune. Shot on 16mm film, the clip combines a wide-eyed and in-your-face performance by Bruun, woven into scenes featuring a small, blonde girl in various woodland settings. She holds a dead bird, stroking its lifeless body as if trying to bring the creature back to life. An onslaught of deathly images focused on the entrails and corpses of deceased animals follows, ending on a peaceful note as the girl sleeps, seemingly safely, in her bed.

Alastor – Slave To The Grave

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Swedish doom rockers ALASTOR are back and have hunkered down to summon the 7-tune doomish gospel "Slave To The Grave" with engineer Magnus Sörensen. ALASTOR is a four piece band from the southern parts of Sweden who plays psychedelic doom with a focus on heavy riffs on high volume. They combine their love for slow music, grindhouse horror, doom and the occult to invoke a feeling of trance and fear in their listeners. The quartet released its epic 3-song debut album "Black Magic" in early 2017 via Twin Earth Records, followed by the 2-track “Blood On Satan’s Claw” EP on Halloween the same year that also included the excellent cover "Bad Moon Rising", by CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Joining forces with RidingEasy Records in 2018.

The band formed 2016, consisting of Dharma Gheddon (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar and organ), Lucy Ferian on lead & acoustic guitar and organ, Terry Fying on guitar and Levi Athan on drums. "Yes, those are their given birth names, why do you ask?"

"Slave To The Grave" opens up with a sparkling thunder, church bells and spoken words in native language intro "I Döden Är Vi Alla Lika" that is translated to (In Death We Are All Equal), gives us a good hint that this album circles around the concept of death, when the last words are spoken and the church bell continues over into rumbling and doomish riffing in "Your Lives Are Worthless", an amazing tune with its repetitive heavy riffing full of distorted darkness that makes you simply knee-weak and cold sweaty. "Drawn To The Abyss" is a powerful, melodic and swinging piece, heavy riffing with stalking grooves. "N.W. 588", the album centrepiece, a catchy and groovy psychedelic rocker that sends fumes through the body. Then they change turns and serves us with the beautiful acoustic guitar driven piece where we get both great singing, dark lyrics, hand clap and flamenco in this half pace ballad "Gone". The anthemic album title tune is filled with enchanting riffs and darkness. The opus that is "Spider Of My Love", a 17-minute album closer that takes out on a journey to the end and will make your skin crawl.

The album is well balanced and with a great mix for all the instruments, expansive song structures, confident drumming, distorted, heavy and well played guitars, solid bass-line and a great swing in the melody. I'm impressed, what a debut album.

"Slave To The Grave" was released on October 31st, 2018 via RidingEasy Records.

Sum: 50 Mins of Pure Swedish Doom that you can live without!

Today's tune "Your Lives Are Worthless", taken from "Slave To The Grave", enjoy!

Neil Young - Love And War

Sunday, time for a classic!

This anti-war anthem is a track from Canadian rock musician Neil Young's 30th studio album, "Le Noise". The record was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Daniel Lanois, released on September 28, 2010.

The song addresses the troubles in Afghanistan and Iraq as Young sings, "Daddy won't ever come home," to a child who lost his father in the conflict.

Young sings on this track, "When I sing about love and war/I don't really know what I'm saying." Chris Talbott from the Associated Press asked the Canadian singer if this is a confusing statement from the artist who gave us "Ohio" and "Let's Impeach The President"? Young chuckled then replied: "It's such a deep subject and there's really no one answer. There's nobody who really knows. It just seems to be a part of the human condition is to get in wars over and over again for as long as human beings have been around. So I have opinions but I'm not so sure that they're right."

The video for "Love And War" was released on September 20, 2010, enjoy today's tune.

John Mellencamp - Eyes On The Prize

John Mellencamp has unveiled his politically charged video for “Eyes on the Prize,” one of the 10 covers that appear on the rocker’s upcoming "Other People’s Stuff".

“Protest songs can still make a difference,” Mellencamp said of the track; for Other People’s Stuff, due out December 7th, Mellencamp collected cover songs he recorded throughout his career from “seminal albums, compilations, unearthed sessions and documentaries.”

“Most, if not all, of the songs on Other People’s Stuff come from The Great American Songbook,” Mellencamp previously said in a statement. “These are songs that have been recorded over the last 40 years of my career, but had never been put together as one piece of work. Now, they have.”

John J Mellencamp (born October 7, 1951), previously known as Johnny Cougar, John Cougar, and John Cougar Mellencamp, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, painter, and actor. He is known for his catchy, populist brand of heartland rock, which emphasizes traditional instrumentation. Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s while "honing an almost startlingly plainspoken writing style that, starting in 1982, yielded a string of Top 10 singles," including "Hurts So Good," "Jack & Diane," "Crumblin' Down," "Pink Houses," "Lonely Ol' Night," "Small Town," "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.," "Paper in Fire" and "Cherry Bomb." He released his latest album, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, on April 28, 2017, to widespread critical acclaim.

Mellencamp have also announced plans to tour in support of his new album on a 2019 “The John Mellencamp Show.” The video accompanying the song comes in time for the midterm elections. Protest songs can still make a difference.

Mellencamp’s “Eyes on the Prize,” a variation on the traditional folk song “Keep Your Hands on the Plow,” was originally performed live by the singer in 2010 as part of The White House Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement special.

Clutch - In Walks Barbarella

Defcon! Tractor beams!
Weaponized Funk
In walks Barbarella, set to stun
Defcon! Tractor beams!
Gamma ray gun
Straight out the mothership!
Weaponized Funk

Part of the lyrics from one of the coolest Rock Blues bands on this planet, the Maryland rockers CLUTCH and today they are gigging at Annexet here in Stockholm and I will miss it 😔
Well I could probably be able to sort it somehow, but after this week at work, I'm exhausted, dead tired, finish and totally caput, I need some rest before I break up into thousand pieces.

Well, enjoy the music, I will and if you are there or going to see them play soon, have fun and think of me.

Today's tune "In Walks Barbarella" is taken from the album "Book of Bad Decisions", enjoy! The tune "In Walks Barbarella" is two stories woven into one. An adult man talks to a boy, maybe his son, about events that occurred 20 years ago. Now add visions of Jane Fonda as Barbarella, ray guns, and tractor beams. It's one of "Book Of Bad Decisions"' signature songs and it includes a horn section that truly turns this song into weaponized funk.

Last In Line - Landslide

Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice, Phil Soussan, and Andrew Freeman collectively known as LAST IN LINE, are set to release their second album, “II” via Frontiers Music Srl on February 22, 2019.

LAST IN LINE was formed in 2011, when Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, (Ronnie James Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the "Holy Diver", "Last In Line" - the album from which they took their name, and "Sacred Heart” albums) teamed up with esteemed vocalist Andrew Freeman. The debut album "Heavy Crown" was released in February 2016. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when bassist Jimmy Bain unexpectedly passed away at the age of 68 on January 23, 2016. LAST IN LINE, honoring what they knew would be Bain’s wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album, hitting festivals, headlining clubs, and sharing the stage with metal luminaries such as SAXON and MEGADETH.

In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of the second album, which was produced by the band members and Jeff Pilson (FOREIGNER, THE END: MACHINE, DOKKEN), who also produced the debut album. Having really gelled as a band while touring in support of the debut album, the songwriting came readily to the members. They’ve created a record that shows a big progression in sound, while immediately being recognizable as Last In Line thanks to Vinny Appice’s rhythms, thunderous bass from Soussan, amazing vocals from Andrew Freeman, and the roaring guitars of Vivian Campbell.

Pre order the album with alot of fun extras at Pledgemusic here!

Today's tune "Landslide" is taken from the upcoming album "II", the Video Directed, Produced and Edited by Jamie Brown for Smoking Gun, Inc.

The Ghost Next Door - Eleven O'clock Blues

THE GHOST NEXT DOOR is an alt/metal quartet hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area

Based in Berkeley, California, THE GHOST NEXT DOOR emerged from a desire to marry the dark melancholy of 80s and 90s alternative with the aggression and drive of Bay Area metal. With Gary Wendt on guitar and vocals, Aaron Asghari on guitar, Noah Whitfield on bass, and Sebastien Castelain on drums, solid songwriting and musical diversity are at the core of THE GHOST NEXT DOORs sound.

Each member brings unique influences from across the modern music spectrum: from punk to jazz, progressive metal to sadcore, modern rock to thrash. Their influences and playing styles combine into meter-bending, riff-driven rock & roll breaking out from under the bare skin of abrasively honest lyrics.

Today's tune "Eleven O'clock Blues" is taken from THE GHOST NEXT DOORs debut. Released on June 9th on Mausoleum Records. Video directed by Mike Sloat, enjoy!

Dimmu Borgir - Council Of Wolves And Snakes

Eerie shadows are lurking in the dark corners of spring 2018; the spirit that denies, a force able to distort our conception of space and time. Over seven years, deathlike silence has filled the halls of the world’s biggest black metal forge, DIMMU BORGIR, whilst powers have been gathering to resurrect the band right in time for their 25th anniversary. Now they finally mark their return with a vicious work of art that can be defined as timeless in the truest sense of the word: "Eonian".

"Eonian" is the tenth studio album by Norwegian black metal band DIMMU BORGIR, which was released on May 4, 2018.

Production of "Eonian" originally started at least in 2012 but faced many delays for years after. However, it was given an eventual official release date of May 4, 2018, which ended up being their first original studio album in nearly 8 years following 2010's "Abrahadabra". The band self-produced the album while the engineering was handled by Jens Bogren. DIMMU BORGIR had to re-sign to their current label Nuclear Blast and reflect on communication during the eight-year gap. During this gap, three of the band members became fathers and focused on their family life. When describing the album's sound, Silenoz stated that the symphonic metal parts are more symphonic while the black metal sound of DIMMU is more black metal this time around. In April, DIMMU BORGIR announced limited tour dates for the month of August 2018 that have expanded, check all the dates below.

DIMMU BORGIR (/ˌdɪmuː ˈbɔːrɡɪər/) is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. The name is derived from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic formation in Iceland, the name of which means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse. The band has been through numerous lineup changes over the years; vocalist Shagrath and rhythm guitarist Silenoz are the only original members who still remain, with lead guitarist Galder being a longstanding member. On 28 May, it was announced that Victor Brandt (ENTOMBED A.D., FIRESPAWN) had officially joined as the band's new bassist.

Today's tune "Council Of Wolves And Snakes" is the second single taken from the latest album "Eonian", enjoy!
