Trettioåriga Kriget - Kaledoniska Orogenesen

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Kaledoniska Orogenesen" is a tune made by the progressive rock band TRETTIOÅRIGA KRIGET (Thirty Years War). The band was formed 1970, Saltsjöbaden, a seaside resort southeast of Stockholm, Sweden.

They were at the time all around seventeen and still in high school. The schools main hall was in the beginning used as the rehearsal room. This first lineup of the band was a six piece with two drummers! It included Stefan Fredin- bass guitar, vocals, Pocke Öhrström- guitar, vocals, Dag Lundquist- drums, Olle Thörnvall- harmonica, guitar, Dag Kronlund- piano and Johan Gullberg- drums. In 1971 Pocke, Johan and Dag K. left and Robert joined on vocals and guitar. In 1972 Olle quit playing harmonica to concentrate on the lyrics, leaving the band to consist only of Stefan, Dag and Robert. They decided they needed a good guitar player and started to audition some guitarists. Through these auditions they found Christer who joined the band in summer 1972. The band rehearsed intensively for a year and a half and developed a style of their own quite unlike the main trend in Swedish rock during the Seventies.

Early 1974 they got a record deal. Also at that time they got a new rehearsal room in Saltsjöbaden. An old underground disco which they called “Grunden”. There they would remain for a long time….An album was recorded that summer and released in august 1974. The album was named only “TRETTIOÅRIGA KRIGET”. The musical talent and originality of the group was duly recognized in the reviews. The album was an instant classic and is often considered as the first Swedish heavy rock album. They also now started to tour extensively in Sweden and also did several live performances on national Swedish radio.

Today's tune "Kaledoniska Orogenesen" is taken from their self titled 1974 album, enjoy this far out Sunday piece.

Hypnos - Caught In The Night

Through the time and universe of rock-history, there have been a few words interlocking the important events. Words as Loud, Groovy, Electrifying and Over the top – words that also could describe Swedens HYPNOS. A band that holds the capacity to unite an audience of headbangers, stoners, retro-kids and old farts. Wherever you find Hypnos you will find awesome rock music.

With their twin guitar hooks a la THIN LIZZY, powerful vocals reminding you of a young Halford or Dickinson, groovy rhythm section and stunning stage performance it’s hard not to get going by their show. There is a playful vibe over the band. There is something more than just 70´s retro or 80´s revival. HYPNOS have their home in Gothenburg a city that is notorious for their high amount of quality rock acts. HYPNOS is very much a central part of the city’s contemporary rock-scene where you among other can find acts as NIGHT VIPER, HONEYMOON DISEASE, HORISONT and GRAVEYARD.

Perhaps though the playful vibe and the laid back and easy going attitude of the band is because of the bands ex-member list that is just as long as any classic rock act. The constant changing of members have given the band the opportunity to always evolve, and they have always kept the feeling that each riff might be the last riff they would ever play.

The band released "GBG Sessions" in 2018 that is a special album as it both shows a live experienced band at the same time as it features the band’s new singer Linus Johansson for the first time. HYPNOS had trouble during the first a half of 2017 when the band’s previous singer Philip Lindgren decided to leave the band and soon after their old label Crusher Records was put on hold. But no challenge is big enough for HYPNOS as the band rises like Phonix from the ashes.

HYPNOS started in 2013 and recorded and released their debut album self-titled album in 2014 (Crusher Records). In 2016 the band released their second album "Cold Winds" (Crusher Records). In 2017 the band re-recorded many of their favourite tracks from previous releases for their "GBG Sessions" live in the studio album. The session also included two brand new songs. Hypnos returns in October 2018 with their brand new album "Set Fire To The Sky". The band has refined their sound together with producer Ola Ersfjord (TRIBULATION, PRIMORDIAL, HONEYMOON DISEASE). The sound is clearer and creates more space and room for the music. Hypnos are establishing their sound with the new album. It´s clear that ”Set Fire To The Sky” is the launchpad for the bands future.

Today the band is stronger, wiser, more mature and have gained a new singer and a new label in The Sign Records. HYPNOS came to their crossroad but this new live session album shows that the band knows their direction and the future has never looked brighter.

Vidunder - A Fooling Dream

"A Fooling Dream" is a tune by the Swedish bluesy garage rockers VIDUNDER.

On June 2, 2017 they released the song "A Fooling Dream", the B-side from the 7" single "Thirst". This was the last tune from the band, right after the release, the band decided to let VIDUNDER go.

This is what they said.

"After six intense, and less intense years we have come to a point where we feel it's time to let go, time to put this beast into the grave.

We want to thank all of you who came to our shows, booked our shows, bought our records, distributed our records, recorded our records, drove us around Europe, followed us around Europe, bands that supported us, bands we had the honour to support and to you who helped us in any way not mentioned; THANK YOU!!! Without you guys it wouldn't have been possible and for that we are forever thankful!

A special thanks to Peter at Crusher Records, Funky Thomas, Ricky at Swamp Bookings and our nearest for believing in us and our music.

See you bat-cats out there, in one way or another!

Skraeckoedlan - Kung Mammut

Space, in its unfathomable vastness, has since long been a subject of fascination for those who tilt their heads toward the skies. Full of awe despite its supposed desolation, it is here we place our hopes and dreams of a better future, of continued existence altogether. It is also here, where the lines between dream and reality become too subtle to differentiate, that we find three entities emerging from the apparent void. Their figures mere shadows, as if cast by the beckoning lights that burn from lifetimes away. Though the dead air does not reverberate, these travellers know not of silence. As wielders of the mighty fuzz-science fiction rock, they seem to echo through the very core of existence, unearthing a reality more bizarre than the strangest of fictions. Yet they move forward, to the extent such a direction is possible in the depths of the universes. Their destination is unclear, as is their mission, but the cosmos is calling and they will answer. Inspired by uncertainty and with a serendipitous approach, they know but this: no power in the ‘verse can stop them!

Set in the 1920’s, Earth (Eorþe) is a mystery with Lovecraftian connotations, philosophically told through eight songs. The record is the telling of a story by author Nils Håkansson, written specifically for SKRAECKOEDLAN to put into music.

In addition to CD and standard vinyl Eorþe also comes in a very limited edition, a box set in which the album has been split into two gatefold vinyls, "Earth: Above and Earth: Below". The box comes packed with pieces of merch revolving around the story and features different artwork than the standard editions.

SKRAECKOEDLAN states this concerning the release:

“This is by far our most ambitious work of art as of yet. It’s been a real challenge to do someone else’s story justice whilst making the songs cohesive as well as standing strong on their own, but through a lot of effort we’ve done just that.”

After those words and the preview of the tunes makes me want this, even more, do as I did, preorder the album at fuzzoramastore!

The upcoming album "Earth" due to be released 15th of Feb - 2019. Preorders: *Limited Edition LP boxset available!*

Today's tune "Kung Mammut", is the first single to be released from SKRAECKOEDLANs upcoming album "Eorþe".

"This song is, more than a part of the concept that is Eorþe, a story about life and the feelings of utter hopelessness our seeming oddity of an existence can often give rise to. It is a song about letting go and leaving behind. It’s about shattering the societal mirror and its reflection of illusionary demands and expectations, leaving your unhindered gaze looking ahead, to where your true calling lies. In short, it is a song about becoming truly free.

A quick run true the new album, have fun!

Nekromant - Blood For Walpurgis

NEKROMANT is a 3-man-piece hailing from the Swedish city of Vänersborg, the band – formerly known as SERPENT – are renowned for delivering a raw, gritty and direct assault, cast in the fires and a dedicated melting pot of metallic inspirations which include BLACK SABBATH, PENTAGRAM and Texan rockers, THE SWORD.

Following the release of their self-titled album in late 2015 on Transubstans Records, the band played extensively both home and abroad at large shows such as Sweden Rock Festival and toured with fellow Swedes, Cities of Mars. Their album NEKROMANT (released under the band’s original name) received unanimous praise by critics and fans alike and led to a very successful start in 2016 for the trio. Having caught the attention of American underground giants Ripple Music, who immediately fell in love with the way the band wore their influences proudly on their sleeves, with the dark and heavy majesty of "Snakes & Liars" (2017) NEKROMANT undoubtedly carried a torch for old-school metal.

Adam Lundqvist – Guitars
Mattias Ottosson – Bass, Vocals
Joakim Olsson – Drums

NEKROMANTs song holds less fascination with Walpurga than the whole underbelly of Walpurgis Night itself. Something is about to rise from the dead and torment the living and we get to hear the excitement of Sankt Walpurgisnacht from the perspective of one of its celebrants, with the hint that this necromancer, however malevolent, is desperately seeking to be reunited with a long lost lover. I have to say that the guitar play is an absolute delight to behold. It’s crisp, vibrant, on-point, and harmonizes splendidly with the rhythm section, which bears the marks of seasoned musicianship. Look for "The Nekromant Lives" to emerge on vinyl and CD formats via Ripple Music, released on October 19th, 2018.

Today's tune "Blood For Walpurgis" is the first single from their new album "The Nekromant Lives". The tune is a tight, twisted number about Walpurgis Night, named for the man held up by German believers as their emissary in battle against the wiles of the Devil and all them witches, in particular, which would come out to play on Hexennacht. To this day, Christians set bonfires ablaze in Saint Walpurga’s name on the eve of April 30th, with hopes of chasing away demons of all kinds.

Greenleaf – Hear The Rivers

Monday, time for "Record Of The Week".

The Borlänge rockers GREENLEAF are back with a new full-length album. These Swedish stoners have been visiting Tune Of The Day on regular basis. GREENLEAF started as a side project in late 1999 by Tommi Holappa, Daniel Lidén and Bengt Bäcke. Since then they have released an impressive seven albums and one EP, where the latest is "Hear The Rivers". The category "Stoner Rock" that these guys have burn marked into their flesh can be heard on the new album even if the wings are wider than usual, the styles vary from dirty classic rock riffing, heavy blues rock, swampy desert rock to stoner rock. The sound is both characteristic and personal, heavenly groovy, easily identifiable and very catchy, you know, hard to sit still.

"Hear The Rivers" open up with the energetic "Let It Out!", drums and a fat bass-line signed Hans Fröhlich, along with a fuzzy and catchy riff by Tommi Holappa kicks this steam packed tune-up to the blue, stuck in the bubble and you just want to get out!. "Sweet Is The Sound" an old-school bluesy soul piece, riffy and far out, brilliantly performed by the band. "A Point Of A Secret" is a drum driving tune where Sebastian Olsson keeps the tempo, catchy melody with personal lyrics, great vocals from Arvid Hällagård and smart riffing. "Good Ol’ Goat" is a real stomper, knocking drum intro, bluesy and soaring vocals, distorted heavy swampy blues with a great swing. "The Rumble And The Weight" fuzzy riffing with a hypnotic and intoxicating rumbling melody that will trance you right on the spot. "We Are The Prawns" a slower piece, with great vocal performance and deep lyrics. The sharp straightforward rocker "Oh My Bones", pretty solid tune. "In The Caverns Below" is another powerful tune, with terrific grooviness, riff climbing and energetic drumming. Another generic rocker is "High Fever", that makes your body move every muscle, very dangerous tune to play in the car with its high energy and glowing guitars. The last tune, the album closer "The Rivers Lullaby", an eight-minute psychedelic anthem, bluesy with a brilliant vocals, light fingers with thoughtful sweep on the guitar strings to some real sludgy riffs, emotional drumming, fat and chunky basslines with a bombastic ending makes this tune an adventurous experience, a brilliant choice to end a marvellous album.

"Hear The Rivers" is a solid album with a superb musically handcraft, greatly produced and well written. The album was released through Napalm Records November 9th. The album was produced by former GREENLEAF- and DOZER drummer Karl Daniel Lidén (CRAFT, BLOODBATH, CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX). The bearded dudes will hit European roads in November.

Sum: "Hear The Rivers" is an absolute gem of an album. Don't miss this!

Today's tune "Good Ol' Goat", taken from "Hear The Rivers", enjoy!

Slayer - Angel Of Death

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman. They detail the Nazi physician Josef Mengele's human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

Although the lyrics describe Mengele's abuses rather than endorsing them, "Angel of Death" led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism against the band, which they vigorously denied but which followed them throughout their early career. Despite the controversy and the resulting delay in the release of "Reign in Blood", the song remains a live favourite and has appeared on all of SLAYERs live albums.

The song has been described as highly influential in the development of thrash metal or speed metal, and is highly regarded by some critics; AllMusic's Steve Huey called it a classic and the album "the pinnacle of speed metal". The half-time riff was sampled by PUBLIC ENEMY in their 1988 song "She Watch Channel Zero?!."

Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die

Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

The show at Hovet with SLAYER was a pure thrash metal fest, 3 great support acts like LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY as you surely notice already, that I could not resist playing them all here.

SLAYERs show is the far best I have ever seen and I believe I have seen them more than 10 times over all these years. SLAYERs show at Hovet is the best live performance of the year by far. But in the other hand I have missed many because of to much work and when I day off comes I prefer to relax and rest.

The setlist of SLAYER was the regular one, playing the same tunes at every stop on this tour. The pyro was pure magic, great work Pyrotek! Nice to work with you guys again.

On December 2, 2018, Holt announced that he would not perform the remainder of the band's European tour to be with his dying father. Former MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel would fill in for him as a result. Two days to learn all the riff, amazing, as he pulled it off terrific.

The show ends with standing ovations for almost 10 minutes when Tom Araya stands still in front of the audience and receiving cheers and applause without adversity, he moves slowly along the stage edge and sucks in the cheers, he is the happiest man at this moment, he ends everything by reading a note in Swedish saying ”Jag kommer sakna er alla” (I will miss all of you), so powerful and heartbreaking.

And all I can say is that we will miss you SLAYER!

Setlist from the show at Hovet.

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

The official music video for the album's third single, "Overlord", premiered on June 30, 2015 "Overlord", the new Jorge Torres-Torres-directed video from Richmond, Virginia-based metallers LAMB OF GOD, can be seen below.

Some LOG picks from the show.

Setlist from Hovet.

Obituary - Redneck Stomp

Holy Moses, my head is thrashed. What an evening at Hovet, four strong bands on one stage, 3 of them supporting the farewell of the classic thrashers' SLAYER.

The first support band was the American death metal legends OBITUARY, early slot but almost half full venue even if they started an hour after doors. 30 minutes set made them play the best from their catalogue.

OBITUARY started their set with their lovely instrumental "Redneck Stomp", a tune taken from the sixth album "Frozen In Time". It was released on July 12, 2005, and was the band's first album in eight years since 1997's "Back from the Dead", and the last to feature guitarist Allen West.

OBITUARY setlist from Hovet, Sweden December 5th.

Myrkur - Juniper

Danish composer, vocalist and classically trained multi-instrumentalist MYRKUR unveils two ethereal new studio tracks with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST, PARADISE LOST).

MYRKUR is Amalie Bruun. The new EP Juniper is made at Orgone Studios in Bedfordshire, England. The album's B-Side, "Bonden og Kragen", is a solo reinterpretation of a traditional Danish folk song from the 1600s. Together, both tracks exquisitely display MYRKURs eclectic sound and captivating personality. A limited edition of the 7" will coincide with the digital release, December 7th on Relapse Records.

Pre-Order via Here:

Today's tune is the stirring video for the record's title tune. Shot on 16mm film, the clip combines a wide-eyed and in-your-face performance by Bruun, woven into scenes featuring a small, blonde girl in various woodland settings. She holds a dead bird, stroking its lifeless body as if trying to bring the creature back to life. An onslaught of deathly images focused on the entrails and corpses of deceased animals follows, ending on a peaceful note as the girl sleeps, seemingly safely, in her bed.

Alastor – Slave To The Grave

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Swedish doom rockers ALASTOR are back and have hunkered down to summon the 7-tune doomish gospel "Slave To The Grave" with engineer Magnus Sörensen. ALASTOR is a four piece band from the southern parts of Sweden who plays psychedelic doom with a focus on heavy riffs on high volume. They combine their love for slow music, grindhouse horror, doom and the occult to invoke a feeling of trance and fear in their listeners. The quartet released its epic 3-song debut album "Black Magic" in early 2017 via Twin Earth Records, followed by the 2-track “Blood On Satan’s Claw” EP on Halloween the same year that also included the excellent cover "Bad Moon Rising", by CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Joining forces with RidingEasy Records in 2018.

The band formed 2016, consisting of Dharma Gheddon (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar and organ), Lucy Ferian on lead & acoustic guitar and organ, Terry Fying on guitar and Levi Athan on drums. "Yes, those are their given birth names, why do you ask?"

"Slave To The Grave" opens up with a sparkling thunder, church bells and spoken words in native language intro "I Döden Är Vi Alla Lika" that is translated to (In Death We Are All Equal), gives us a good hint that this album circles around the concept of death, when the last words are spoken and the church bell continues over into rumbling and doomish riffing in "Your Lives Are Worthless", an amazing tune with its repetitive heavy riffing full of distorted darkness that makes you simply knee-weak and cold sweaty. "Drawn To The Abyss" is a powerful, melodic and swinging piece, heavy riffing with stalking grooves. "N.W. 588", the album centrepiece, a catchy and groovy psychedelic rocker that sends fumes through the body. Then they change turns and serves us with the beautiful acoustic guitar driven piece where we get both great singing, dark lyrics, hand clap and flamenco in this half pace ballad "Gone". The anthemic album title tune is filled with enchanting riffs and darkness. The opus that is "Spider Of My Love", a 17-minute album closer that takes out on a journey to the end and will make your skin crawl.

The album is well balanced and with a great mix for all the instruments, expansive song structures, confident drumming, distorted, heavy and well played guitars, solid bass-line and a great swing in the melody. I'm impressed, what a debut album.

"Slave To The Grave" was released on October 31st, 2018 via RidingEasy Records.

Sum: 50 Mins of Pure Swedish Doom that you can live without!

Today's tune "Your Lives Are Worthless", taken from "Slave To The Grave", enjoy!

Neil Young - Love And War

Sunday, time for a classic!

This anti-war anthem is a track from Canadian rock musician Neil Young's 30th studio album, "Le Noise". The record was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Daniel Lanois, released on September 28, 2010.

The song addresses the troubles in Afghanistan and Iraq as Young sings, "Daddy won't ever come home," to a child who lost his father in the conflict.

Young sings on this track, "When I sing about love and war/I don't really know what I'm saying." Chris Talbott from the Associated Press asked the Canadian singer if this is a confusing statement from the artist who gave us "Ohio" and "Let's Impeach The President"? Young chuckled then replied: "It's such a deep subject and there's really no one answer. There's nobody who really knows. It just seems to be a part of the human condition is to get in wars over and over again for as long as human beings have been around. So I have opinions but I'm not so sure that they're right."

The video for "Love And War" was released on September 20, 2010, enjoy today's tune.
