"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" is a cowboy-styled country/western song written in 1948 by American songwriter, film and television actor Stan Jones. A number of versions have been done during the years.

The song tells a folk tale of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever "trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies". Jones stated he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old Native American who resided north-east of the Douglas, Arizona border town, a few miles behind D Hill, north of Agua Prieta, Sonora. The Native Americans, possibly Apache, who lived within Cochise County, believed that when souls vacate their physical bodies, they reside as spirits in the sky, resembling ghost riders. He related this story to Wayne Hester, a boyhood friend (later owner of the Douglas Cable Company). As both boys were looking at the clouds, Stan shared what the old Native American had told him, looking in amazement as the cloudy shapes were identified as the "ghost riders" that years later, would be transposed into lyrics. The melody is based on the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".

More than 50 performers have recorded versions of the song. Charting versions were recorded by THE OUTLAWS, VAUGHN MONROE ("Riders in the Sky" with orchestra and vocal quartet), which topped the Billboard magazine charts, by BING CROSBY (with THE KEN DARBY SINGERS), FRANKIE LAINE, BURL IVES (two different versions), MARTY ROBBINS, THE RAMRODS AND JOHNNY CASH. Other recordings were made by EDDY ARNOLD, PEGGY LEE (with THE JUD CONLON SINGERS), CHRISTOPHER LEE, SPIKE JONES AND HIS CITY SLICKERS. GENE AUTRY sang it in the 1949 movie, "Riders In The Sky". JONES recorded it for his 1957 album "Creakin' Leather". CHILDREN OF BODOM, IMPALED NAZARENE and DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER have also made covers. THE TUCSON ARIZONA BOYS CHORUS sing the song dressed in cowboy attire and performing rope tricks.

Today's version is made by the Santa Barbara heavy metal veterans DEVILDRIVER, the tune was released on the full-length album outlaw country-gone-metal anthems, "Outlaws 'Til The End: Vol. 1", on July 6, 2018 via Napalm Records.

The track features the talents of album guests John Carter Cash (son of country music legend Johnny Cash), Ana Cristina Cash, and renowned LAMB OF GOD vocalist Randy Blythe.

John Carter Cash adds: "All my life I have loved the power and eerie quality of the song 'Ghost Riders In The Sky'. Since I was nine years old, I have lived and breathed heavy metal music. I am grateful to have had the chance to work with Dez Fafara, Randy Blythe, DEVILDRIVER and others, in the upcoming release of what I believe is the consummate metal version of this musical masterpiece."

Ana Cristina Cash says: "I am so proud to have been a part of 'Outlaws 'Til The End: Vol. 1' and to have sung on the metal version of 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' with my husband John Carter Cash, Dez Fafara, Randy Blythe and DEVILDRIVER. This whole album pushes boundaries and merges the outlaw country and the metal genres in a masterful way."

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

Slayer - War Ensemble

It’s the moment we hoped would never arrive because we simply can’t accept that we’ll never get to see SLAYER again…

The legendary metallers have announced their final-ever UK and European tour, kicking off on November 1 and running through until December 8.

Iconic metal band SLAYER says farewell after almost 40 years as a thrash metal giants. They are the creators of one of the most brutal and aggressive music ever created. SLAYER is one of four bands that has defined a whole genre - and has become a benchmark for how to make metal.

After almost 37 years, the band has released 12 studio albums and won a lot of prizes (including two Grammy Awards). The records have sold gold several times and the band has even got its own show at the rich Smithsonian Institute. It's a band that has been on the front of hundreds of metal and rock magazines and toured the world over thousands of dedicated fans. There is also a band that has been in deep sorrow, with the guitarist and co-founder Jeff Hanneman's tragic death in 2013.

Now the story of SLAYER is over. And for their final goodbye they bring LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY. All this farewell, we in Sweden says goodby and thank you for all this year this evening, December 5th at Hovet in Stockholm, see all the dates below.

Lamb of God - 512

VII: Sturm und Drang is the upcoming eighth studio album by American groove metal band LAMB OF GOD. The album will be released on July 24th, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America

LAMB OF GOD (sometimes abbreviated as LoG) is from Richmond, Virginia. Formed in 1994 (as BURN THE PRIEST), the group consists of vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler. The band is considered a significant member of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement.

Since its formation, LAMB OF GOD has released seven studio albums (including one released under "Burn the Priest"), one live album, one compilation album and three DVDs. 

 
Todays tune "512" is the second single from the upcoming 8:th album VII: Sturm und Drang.

Blythe wrote the lyrics to the song "512," the album's second single, in Pankrác Prison cell number 512, while he was contemplating how the experience was changing him. According to Blythe, most of his time was spent in a basement dungeon. He said the guards put him there so they could monitor him for depression. "They stick you in the worst, dimmest, darkest place in the prison," he says. "I couldn't even see the sun to tell what part of the day it was. It was just steadily lessening levels of gloom."

Slipknot - Killpop

The American metal band SLIPKNOT is out touring atm, the "Summer's Last Stand Tour" with SLIPKNOT , LAMB OF GOD, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and MOTIONLESS IN WHITE, see the dates below, they also have released a new video "Killpop" that we choose as Today's Tune!

After the release of .5: The Gray Chapter, Corey Taylor stated that 'Killpop' would be the next song from the album to get a music video. No information about the video was released between the point Taylor said the song would be getting a music video (Circa November 2014) and June 7th, 2015 when the band's official Twitter revealed that the music video would be released on June 8th. The music video switches between footage of the band members and two painted women wandering an abandoned building. Besides being shown playing together, each band member is also shown in their own scene either playing their instrument in an empty room or wandering the abandoned building. The two women are shown mirroring each other's movements and appear in the scenes of some of the band members. Like other SLIPKNOT videos, 'Killpop' was directed by M. Shawn Crahan.

The song leaked two weeks prior to being officially released by the band on October 16, 2014. When officially released by the band, it featured original cover art like the other promotional singles released before it. When WGRD 97.9 asked frontman Corey Taylor about "Killpop", Taylor said:

"You know, what’s funny is over the last few weeks, I’ve really gotten everyone’s interpretation of what that song means to them, and it’s nowhere near what I wrote about. So it’s kind of interesting to hear people’s interpretations of what I’m singing about. And I’ll be honest with you: the song is my reflection on my relationship with music. That’s who the ‘she’ is. And not just music, but the music industry in general. So there’s a love-hate relationship there that really kind of comes into view. There's the old adage, 'Be careful what you wish for,' and, 'Be careful doing what you love, because sometimes it will turn on you.' And, you know, anytime you mix something that you love and business, you're gonna find the rusty cracks in there that piss you off. So that song, really, is about how much I still love making music, but also how much I just hate the business side, the numbers side, the people in the suits who try to run stuff, and having to deal with them and having to learn how to talk to them. And, you know, it's frustrating sometimes, but it is what it is. And luckily, we got a great song out of it, and we were able to really paint something really cool with it and just be able to put it out there for people to dig."

As Loudwire stated "Today, we were exposed to "Killpop", which is arguably the poppiest SLIPKNOT cut from ‘.5: The Gray Chapter’ so far. Vocalist Corey Taylor is very front-and-center throughout the track, as Slipknot’s new mystery drummer takes a step back from his death metal-inspired parts showcased throughout the new album so far." Metal Injection said "Today, the band released their latest single, "Killpop" and this one builds and builds and builds until it gets really heavy. It's definitely one of the standout tracks on the album"

Todays tune "Killpop" is a single taken for their fifth major label studio album .5: The Gray Chapter. The song was first released as a promo/digital single on October 16, 2014. It was the fifth promo and seventh overall single released from the album. The song received a retail single release in April of 2015.

Slipknot - Custer

SLIPKNOT have released a Live Video clip of the track "Custer" that was earlier released as a promotional single.

After all the promotional releases, "Custer" received an official retail release in late January 2015, making for the third official single.

The song begins with percussionist Shawn Crahan describing what the tempo of the song should be. The track then quickly transgresses into one that is much more deep and forceful, opening the composition. The song contains samples of the "Screaming Goat" YouTube meme with lead vocalist Corey Taylor speaking in the manner of a radio announcer.

Metal Hammer describes the work as having "an air of the self-titled about it with Sid's scratching in the background and almost poem-esque opening verse". ArtistDirect describes the tune as '"Surfacing 2015" with a massive refrain and Faith No More-esque groove that burns and blazes with evil and engaging panache'

From the small town "Winthrop" in Massachusetts we find the metalcore dudes UNEARTH.

This markes the first album that does not feature long time bassist John Maggard, also the first album to feature Nick Pierce on drums. Guest on the album is Mark Morton from LAMB OF GOD.

Skyharbor - Catharsis

Skyharbor is a Progressive Metal band with members from New Delhi and Mumbai, India, Maryland, USA, and Nottinghamshire, UK. Starting out as a simple bedroom studio project, guitarist Keshav Dhar has seen Skyharbor quickly evolve into one of India’s hottest metal prospects, with huge admiration coming in from some of the biggest names in metal worldwide.

Skyharbor released their debut album "Blinding White Noise : Illusion & Chaos" on April 23rd, 2012 worldwide via Basick Records to glowing praise from fans and press alike. The band followed up the launch with an epic live performance in support of Lamb Of God on their 2012 world tour.

Skyharbor made their debut European appearance with an exclusive show at Euroblast Festival in Germany alongside After The Burial, Scar Symmetry, Tesseract and many more renowned modern progressive bands. The band capped off a highly successful year with two headlining performances in India in December, before taking time off to focus on their second album.

It's not everyday that you will come over some Indian Prog-metal, but this is really cool, its brutal, melodic and very technical and monumental.

This is a double-disc album. Daniel Tompkins (who would later join Skyharbor) does vocal duties on disc one (Illusion), and Sunneith Revankar does vocal duties on disc two (Chaos). This album has numerous studio musicians. Marty Friedman (Ex Megadeth) guitar solo on Catharsis and second guitar solo on Celestial. Vishal J. Singh, first guitar solo on Celestial. New Zealand based musician Zorran Mendonsa additional guitars on Trayus. Disc two (Chaos) almost entirely consists of growl vocals. On tracks "Trayus" and "Aphasia" have growls and clean vocals, and the first disc primarily relies on clean vocals.

Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

L'Enfant Sauvage is the title of the upcoming fifth album release by Gojira, the album is also their Roadrunner Records debut. The title translates to "The Wild Child." The album features 11 tracks, and is scheduled to land at retail on June 26.

Frontman, guitarist and songwriter Joe Duplantier talks about the meaning of the upcoming album by saying, “When you become a musician, you don’t have a boss telling you what to do so you have to be very responsible.”

He goes on to say “With freedom comes responsibility, so I’m asking myself, ‘What is freedom? What does it mean to me?’ L’Enfant Sauvage reflects on that. There’s no answer though. There’s just life and questions.” In support of the album, Gojira will embark on a North American tour alongside Dethklok and Lamb of God, starting on August 1, 2012.

Gojira is a French heavy metal band from Bayonne. Formed in 1996, the band was known as Godzilla until 2001. Gojira is composed of Joe Duplantier on vocals and rhythm guitar, his brother Mario Duplantier on drums, Christian Andreu on lead guitar and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass. Since their first studio album, Gojira has had no changes in lineup, written five studio albums and produced two live DVDs.
