Denzel Curry - Bulls On Parade

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Bulls on Parade" is a song by American rock band RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. It is the second song from their second studio album, "Evil Empire"(1996). It was released as the album's first single to modern rock radio on February 9, 1996.

The song is widely known for its popular guitar solo containing a vinyl scratch effect used by Tom Morello, done by toggling between two pickups, one on and one off, while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups to create the effect that someone is scratching a vinyl disc. Morello has stated that the sound he was going for was a "sort of 'Geto Boys' sound, menacing" with E♭ tuning in both guitar and bass and a wah-wah pedal fully in the treble position to create a Houston 5th Ward gangland-style riff.

On February 14, 2019, American rapper Denzel Curry performed a cover of the song on the Australian radio station Triple J as part of Like a Version. The cover was met with critical acclaim. That's the version for thursday cover.

Denzel Rae Don Curry (born February 16, 1995) is an American rapper. Born and raised in Carol City, Florida, Curry started rapping while in sixth grade and began working on his first mixtape in 2011. Influenced by underground Florida rapper SpaceGhostPurrp, the mixtape was later featured on Purrp's social media, giving Curry local attention and resulting in Curry joining Purrp's hip-hop collective, Raider Klan.

Like A Version is a segment on Australian radio station triple j. Every week a musician or band comes into the studio to play one of their own songs and cover a song they love.

Paul Leary - Born Stupid

BUTTHOLE SURFERS guitarist Paul Leary waited 30 years to express his dark humor and carnival sounds once again in a new solo album. Leary’s first album released in 1991, "The History Of Dogs", launched his solo musical career from the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, combining his personal taste with a nuanced flare of woke ideology stemmed from modern society.

Thirty years may seem like an oddly excessive length of time between albums, but that’s apropos, as nearly all the highlights of Leary’s legendary career have been odd and excessive.

Leary is best known as guitarist/vocalist for the infamous psychedelic noise rock band BUTTHOLE SURFERS. The BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ aggressively surrealist recordings and live shows have become mythology in the world of underground music. The headline of a 2016 profile in Vice magazine summed this legacy up neatly, stating the “BUTTHOLE SURFERS Were the Epitome of Every Hell-Raising Rock 'n' Roll Legend You Ever Heard.”

BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ work was often squarely focused on the manipulation of sounds and textures, and Paul Leary's "Born Stupid" is heavily rooted in the craft of song, and the record’s finely structured musical landscapes work to support the stories being sung.

The connection between "Born Stupid" and vintage BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ music is not just stylistic. Longtime fans of Leary’s work will be pleased by the presence of a couple radically reworked interpretations of BUTTHOLE SURFERS-era material, including a giddily demented singalong version of the "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave.”

According to Leary, there was no grand vision behind the conception of Born Stupid. “I wasn’t planning on making another album, but over the years songs kept popping into my head. So I figured I might as well record them.” Leary has seized a ripe cultural moment to send this music out to the world, as "Born Stupid" speaks effectively to the damaged state of contemporary U.S. culture. There’s no better example than the album’s title track, a perfect anthem for the modern American age. “With so much strife and peril in this world I’d like to help make things better. But, instead, I had to be born stupid,” Leary croons in a warped country drawl, evoking the voice of Lee Hazlewood as sung through a cancer kazoo. Throughout the album Leary is joined by drummer Josh Freese, known for his work with a range of artists, including THE VANDALS, GUNS N’ ROSES, and DEVO.

It’s important to note that "Born Stupid" will be the first release on the newly relaunched incarnation of Shimmy-Disc, the influential independent record label founded by producer/musician and underground music impresario Kramer in 1987. Kramer revived Shimmy-Disc for his 2020 tenure as Joyful Noise Recordings’ Artist in Residence. Leary and Kramer have enjoyed a long collaborative relationship. “I’ve known Kramer since the early 1980’s when he was playing for Shockabilly,” Leary shared. “I was a big fan and we met when Shockabilly played in Austin, Texas. Then later on the BUTTHOLE SURFERS were without a bass player, and Kramer offered to play bass for us on a European tour. We’ve been friends ever since.”

Today's tune “Born Stupid” has quite a bit of this twanginess, and is the title track from his second album, released February 12, 2021

Beans - Slow

Fresh from the bubbling surf scene of Geelong, Australia – BEANS, fka BAKED BEANS spill a saucy serve of organ driven garage psych. Fronted by THE MURLOCS drummer Matt Blach

His vocal howl is delivered over driving hammond and guitars, with a lockstep machine backline that’ll burn the roof of your mouth. Flashes of western paddock-basher boogies that melt and make way for sonic salves of a simpler time and place: a groove, leisurely and lackadaisical. BEANS have brought their kinetic energy to stages across the country, including festival appearances at the coveted psych odyssey; Gizzfest, Boogie Fest, New Year’s Evie, SXSW online, as well as KING GIZZARD tour support.

Today's tune "Slow" is taken from their debut album "Babble", released August 17, 2018, enjoy!

Civic - Future Forecast

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

“Future Forecast” is the new album from the Melbourne Garage Punks CIVIC. Led by charismatic frontman Jim McCullough, the five-piece offer a high-octane adrenaline rush with an melodic sound that shakes you off. Think THE STOOGES mixed up with SOCIAL DISTORTION and you will get CIVIC.

Jim McCullough, Lewis Hodgson, Darcy Grigg, Roland Hlavka and David Forcier

"Future Forecast", really do not save on gunpowder, already from the opening riffs on "Radiant Eye" you taste and smell the smoke from the newly fired gun. A punker with that little extra is shown half way when a ripe of saxophone salvos hit the stage, marvelous! And hey, the battle aint over, full throttle forward we go in "Another Day". The power pop twinkle hook in the "As Seen On Tv" really gives the tune some extra flavor. Something similar can be heard on "Clone". The catchy punker "Just A Fix", guitar driven "Tell The Papers" have a great sing along chrous. Marvlous driving bass lick intro in "Sunday Best" that has a bit of a different approach where the native V****A BOYS comes in mind, I just love this one! The dirty and heavy "Shake Like Death" shows an more angry side of "Spit and Cutter". "Back To You" have a more classic punk feel and also offers a cool guitar solo. The classic feel continues in "Hollywood Nights In Hamburg". The album ends with wonderfully screaming guitars in the IGGY POP flavor "Come To Know". This is an brilliand Australian Garage Punk Rock and Roll that I hightly recomend to check up.

"Future Forecast" was released March 26, 2021, sadly no distro for EU/UK yet, but you can get it from Flightless Records, https://flightlessrecords.com/

Sum: "Future Forecast" is exactly the album you need right now to shake up some things that bother you!

Today's tune "Radiant Eye", taken from "Future Forecast", enjoy!

Thin Lizzy - That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart

Sunday, time for a classic.

"That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart" is a tune by the Irish rock band THIN LIZZY, and was released on the eighth studio album "Bad Reputation", released in 1977. As the front cover suggests, most of the tracks feature only three-quarters of the band, with guitarist Brian Robertson only credited on three tracks. He had missed most of their previous tour, following a hand injury sustained in a brawl, and this album turned out to be his last studio effort with THIN LIZZY. On 27 June 2011, a new remastered and expanded version of "Bad Reputation" was released.

With Robertson out of the band, band leader Phil Lynott had decided that Scott Gorham would be able to handle all the guitar duties himself, and that no replacement for Robertson would be recruited prior to recording the album. However, Gorham believed that a second guitarist was required, particularly for live work, performing songs that were written for two guitars. He later said, "I was always a big believer in the magic circle – once you broke the magic circle, the whole thing was broken, right?" He deliberately left two songs ("Opium Trail" and "Killer Without a Cause") without guitar solos recorded, and persuaded Lynott to allow Robertson to return to the band to record the solos for them. Lynott relented, and Robertson flew to Toronto and recorded his lead guitar parts. However, he initially refused to socialise with the other band members: "Christ, I wouldn't even have a drink with them," he said. He later added, "I tried not to go out to clubs for about a week, then succumbed..." Robertson and Gorham shared lead guitar parts on only one song, "That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart".

"It was such an important album to us because of all the adversities that we'd been going through," recalled Gorham. "We had to pull this together or we were going to go down in a ball of flames."

Robertson stayed on for the subsequent Bad Reputation tour, which provided some tracks for the Live and Dangerous album (released 1978), but he left the band when the tour concluded.

Enjoy today's tune!

Led Zeppelin - Rock And Roll

Saturday, September 25, a day in which I obviously is getting one year older, yes it's my birthday :) Congrats to me! Now that it's my day, I must play something that I really like. Something that is dear to my heart. Then there is a band that really warms up a cold autumn day like this with warm, sweet and delightful tones, and I am talking about LED ZEPPELIN of course.

A band that I have had close to my heart for a long long time. I remember the first time I heard this band how much impact they had on me, how much I enjoyed the music, a band that I never felt that I get tired on, I always enjoy listening to a LED ZEPPELIN tune. If I were to be stranded on an Island with music from one band, there is no doubt about what I would choose. Anyway, let's not dig in to this to deep and lets focus on today's tune instead.

"Rock and Roll" is a song by the English rock band LED ZEPPELIN, which was first released as the second track from the band's fourth album in 1971. The song includes a guest appearance by the ROLLING STONES pianist Ian Stewart. In 1972 Robert Christgau called it "simply the most dynamic hard-rock song in the music.

According to guitarist Jimmy Page, "Rock and Roll" developed from a spontaneous jam session, while the band were trying to finish recording "Four Sticks", at the Headley Grange mansion they had rented in Hampshire, England. John Bonham began by playing the drum introduction from the Little Richard song "Keep A-Knockin'" to which Page added a Chuck Berry-style guitar riff. The tapes were rolling and fifteen minutes later the basis of the song was completed. The song is performed in the key of A at a relatively fast tempo of 170 beats per minute.

"Rock and Roll" was a key component of the band's setlist at LED ZEPPELIN concerts from 1971 on. Initially, Plant referred to it on stage as "It's Been A Long Time", which is the first line of the song. In 1972 it was elevated to the opening number of all concert performances and it retained this status until 1975. For the band's 1977 North American tour, it became part of a medley encore with "Whole Lotta Love", and during 1979 and 1980 it became an encore in its own right.

Today's tune "Rock And Roll" (Live at Madison Square Garden, New York, 1973). Taken from the album "IV". Released 8 November 1971. Today we also send some love up to heaven and remembering "Bonzo" who sadley passed away on 25 September 1980, the greatest and most influential rock drummers in history of all time in my book. Enjoy!

Rotten Mind - City Rats

The Swedish rockers ROTTEN MIND will serv us with a tune "City Rats" for this friday. A band that combining elements of 70’s punk, post-punk and garage rock.

"City Rats" is taken from the bands fourth full length album "Rat City Dog Boy". As one of the four original bands affiliated with Lövely Records, ROTTEN MIND had released three studio albums; “I’m Alone Even With You” (2015), “Rotten Mind” (2017) and “Fading Into Oblivion” (2018), their style evolving from the early, fairly frantic, punk thrash of their debut through into more mainstream indie-rock, and it was this mix that ROTTEN MIND displayed when doing live performances in Australia, Germany, France, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, UK, USA, Spain and Czech Republic.

With “Rat City Dog Boy”, ROTTEN MIND return to their musical roots. There are a few new influences in there, to create an album that sounds mostly vintage 70’s punk that to me will appeal mostly both fresh and vintage, making the band more appealing to old-school punks than to broader indie-rock fans.

ROTTEN MIND are consisting of:
Jakob Arvidsson (guitar/ vocals),
Rune Strömbom (bass),
Johan Sverredal (guitar) and
Victor Nordin (drums)

ROTTEN MIND was formed in Uppsala, Sweden in 2015.

Today's tune "City Rats", taken from “Rat City Dog Boy”. Video was filmed and edited by Daniel Wiberg. Enjoy!

Camera Obscura - Super Trouper

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Super Trouper" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, and the title track from their 1980 studio album of the same name, written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The song – with lead vocals by Anni-Frid Lyngstad – had the working title "Blinka Lilla Stjärna" (i.e. Twinkle Little Star, in Swedish), and was the last track to be written and recorded for the album (ultimately replacing the track "Put On Your White Sombrero"). "Super Trouper" was released in November 1980 as the album's third single.

The song's name refers to the Super Trouper, a make of followspot used in large venues.

Today's version is made by the Scottish indie pop band CAMERA OBBSCURA, formed in Glasgow, 1996 and have released five albums to date – the most recent of which, Desire Lines, was released in 2013. The current members of the band are vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, guitarist Kenny McKeeve, bassist Gavin Dunbar, and drummer Lee Thomson. The band undertook an extended hiatus in 2015, following the death of long-serving keyboardist Carey Lander. The surviving members later reconvened in 2018.

The band's bright take on indie pop has been frequently described as "twee pop," and garnered comparisons to fellow Scottish band BELLE & SEBASTIAN. The band have also been praised for their "honest, wide, and adult approach to heartbreak, romantic liaisons, and escapism."

"Super Trouper" by CAMERA OBBSCURA was releeased as a B-side on thier single "Tears For Affairs", released April 16, 2007, the video clip is from the "Sessie op Motel Mozaique", 4/14/07, enjoy!

Bring Me The Horizon - DiE4u

The Britts BRING ME THE HORIZON are back with another new song as part of their "Post Human EP" series, this time it's a bloody and hard-hitting, electronic-popish rock trasher called "Die4u," and it's accompanying video is just downright brutal, see it below.

“‘Die4u’ is a song about toxic obsessions, vices and things you can’t kick. I think a lot of people went through very similar struggles while in lockdown, coming face to face with yourself and seeing who you really are and what’s important," frontman Oli Sykes described of the song.

"The song is a triumphant and emotional one for me because it was a time of realization to kick the things that were no good, and to take the choice in bettering myself. It also connects to a deeper theme about us as a society, and how we need to look at the way we treat ourselves, each other as well as the world."

Deafheaven - Infinite Granite

Monday, time for us to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Infinite Granite" is the fifth album by San Francisco shoegaze rockers DEAFHEAVEN.

With "Infinite Granite" the band is departing from the harsh intensity black gaze to the softer and gentler sounds. A pretty bold move and they will probably lose some loyal fans along the way but will probably fish up significantly more.

"Infinite Granite" is really the album where the shoegaze is the main ingredient of this creation, sure there are a few elements that could be referred to as the old path with some blast beats in the background, screaming background blackened choirs in tunes like the "Villain". But mostly we will get a clean singing George Clarke, soft playing Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra that handles their instruments guitars, and synthesizers beautifully. Powerful tunes with big choruses, atmospheric landscapes, melodic passages are something that they do very well and show that they keep the balance between each other, this can clearly be heard in tunes like the two first singles "The Gnashing" and "Great Mass Of Color". "In Blur" is the third single that goes in a melancholic way and has a gauzy video, see it below. The sci-fi drained "Neptune Raining Diamonds" is a true beauty. "Lament For Wasps" is a guitar-driven piece with some popish sound, or the opening "Shellstar" is an uplifting piece. The closing tune "Mombasa" that ticks in a little over eight-minute are a marvelous ending with some acoustic guitar strumming and beautiful vocals that should be listened to true headphones where you will get lost in the atmospheric landscape that the band is making for you. Some blackened parts will come in the end. Even if you are an old DEAFHEAVEN fan, I ask you to give this a chance before you dismiss it, I think it is completely magical and it deserves attention.

"Infinite Granite" was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, PARAMORE, JIMMY EAT WORLD) and is a former member of BECK and NINE INCH NAILS touring bands.

Sum: This is a bold move with an impressive result.

Line Up:
George Clarke - Vocals
Kerry McCoy - Guitar/Synthesizers
Shiv Mehra - Guitar/Synthesizers
Chris Johnson - Bass
Daniel Tracy - Drums

Today's tune "In Blur" is taken from "Infinite Granite", enjoy!

Tones On Tail - Lions

Born more by accident than intent, TONES ON TAIL began life simply as a request...a request by BAUHAUS' guitarist Daniel Ash to borrow house mate & BAUHAUS back-line engineer Glenn Campling's then state of the art Dr. Rhythm Boss DR55 drum machine.

With Daniel keen to experiment with new ideas deemed "unsuitable" for BAUHAUS, and Glenn nurturing an almost obsessive interest in the latest technology, a partnership of sorts evolved. The genesis of TONES ON TAIL's future was created in the back of the tour van on the way home from a Bauhaus gig in Reading in October of 1981...

Although it would be some five months before the first fruits from this embryonic partnership were tasted, this particular fruit; Copper (playable at both 45 and 33 rpm!) was one of a culmination of four tracks that would constitute their first eponymous titled four track 12" single. Issued on the seminal 4AD imprint, TONES ON TAIL was a masterpiece in experimental pop, an assemblage of Eno tinged sound-scapes.Ash and Campling initially began stockpiling material and ideas during breaks in their respective hectic BAUHAUS schedules, however, like the phoenix of legend, emerged with bright, shiny, vibrant new colours from the fall-out of the latter's slow, dark disintegration.

Writing and recording initially as a duo until the Spring of 1983, when Ash's former BAUHAUS cohort Kevin Haskins was recruited to add a real, authentic drum sound. Together for little over two years TONES ON TAIL was, much like the mythological Lernaean Hydra, a multi-faceted beast. They successfully created a myriad of sound and style much too complex to even begin to categorise. Affectionately, summed up recently by Campling, as Dr. Frankenstein creating little monsters in a sound lab!

TONES ON TAIL were dissolved in the fall of 1984 but like BAUHAUS before them, left behind some of the most original and highly influential pieces of music ever committed to tape.

Today's tune "Lions" is taken from the only studio album "Pop" by the English post-punk band TONES ON TAIL, a side project of the BAUHAUS members Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins (who later went on to form LOVE AND ROCKETS with David J), and the BAUHAUS roadie Glenn Campling. It was released on 6 April 1984 by the Beggars Banquet record label. The clip is Live at Glasgow, Nite Moves - May 1984

King Buzzo - I'm Glad I Could Help Out

"Gift Of Sacrifice" is the second solo album from KING BUZZO, the MELVINS frontman Roger "Buzz" Osborne. The album features MR. BUNGLE/FANTÔMAS bassist, Trevor Dunn.

“’I’m Glad I Could Help Out’ is the only song on the album that was done in a single take”, explains Osborne of the new track which also features MR. BUNGLE/FANTÔMAS and MELVINS Lite bass player Trevor Dunn. “Trevor and I recorded this in one live session and I couldn’t have been happier with what the result was.”

“It’s no secret that these are strange times The music industry has been wounded as have most everyone else,” says Ipecac co-founder Greg Werckman. “The combination of the closure of our beloved indie record stores, delays and shutdowns of manufacturing plants and the lack of disposable income for many has given us no reasonable choice but to delay the release of this wonderful record. Fear not, music as you knew it, will eventually be back.”

Osborne released his solo debut, "This Machine Kills Artists", in 2014. Consequence of Sound said the album is “the negative bizarre Dylan Goes Electric,” adding “”Osborne’s jump across the electric/acoustic tracks succeeds much the way Dylan’s did: by keeping the strengths while adjusting the settings.” Pitchfork succinctly dubbed the collection “a refreshing breath of unplugged f*ck-it-all folk.”

Today's tune "I'm Glad I Could Help Out" with KING BUZZO (with Trevor Dunn). The video, which was created by Jesse Nieminen.

Mastodon - Pushing The Tides

The Atlanta metal mainstays MASTODON are back on track and standing close to the road with their ninth studio double-album "Hushed And Grim", in their hand, an album that spanning 15 tunes in total, is slated for release on October 29 via Reprise Records. It comes as the follow-up to 2017’s "Emperor Of Sand", which scored MASTODON a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards (they would later win a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2018).

In addition to the great news of the new album, the band has released the first single "Pushing The Tides" taken from the new one.

When MASTODON was unable to tour the past year due to the global pandemic, the band took the downtime to enter the studio with producer David Bottrill (TOOL, MUSE and RUSH) in their hometown and make "Hushed And Grim".

A press release teases that "Hushed And Grim" will be a notably experimental record, saying it sees the band “surveying sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog threaded together by the innately expressive musical interplay of these four virtuosic musicians”. It also states that the album pays homage to the band’s late manager Nick John, who passed away in 2018 after fighting pancreatic cancer.

Placebo - Jackie

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Jackie" is a tune written by the Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor, and it was on her debut album "The Lion And The Cobra", released on 4 November 1987. O'Connor recorded the album while in the later stages of pregnancy with her first child. The title of the album is from Psalm 91:13 "you will tread upon the lion and cobra", and the track "Never Get Old" opens with an Irish language recital of Psalm 91 by singer Enya. The photograph of O'Connor on the album cover was taken by Haysi Fantayzee member Kate Garner. The covers of the United States and Canada issues differed from the European release, as it was decided a more subdued pose would present a "softer" image of O'Connor.

Today's version of "Jackie" is made by PLACEBO, the English rock band, formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994, but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko, and was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. The was previously appeared as a B-side on the DVD edition of the "This Picture" single in 2003) and on the "Covers", the compilation album of covers. The album was originally released as a bonus disc with the special edition version of "Sleeping With Ghosts" on 22 September 2003.

The video clip is from MTV Unplugged 2015, enjoy!

Emma Ruth Rundle - Return

Emma Ruth Rundle have released a new single and a video "Return" from her forthcoming album "Engine Of Hell".

Rundle has always been a multifaceted musician, equally capable of dreamy abstraction (as heard on her album Electric Guitar: One), maximalist textural explorations (see her work in Marriages, Red Sparowes, Nocturnes or collaborations with Chelsea Wolfe and THOU), and the classic singer-songwriter tradition (exemplified by Some Heavy Ocean). But on "Engine Of Hell", Rundle has opted to forego the full-band arrangements of her previous albums in favor of the austerity of a lone piano or guitar and her voice, which creates a kind of intimacy, as if we’re sitting beside Rundle on a bench, or perhaps even playing the songs ourselves. It’s an extremely up-close and personal confessional with a focus on the rich subtleties and timbre of Rundle’s graceful performances.

Emma Ruth Rundle says:“For me this album is the end of an era to the end of a decade of making records. Things DO have to change and have changed for me since I finished recording it.” In essence, "Engine Of Hell" signifies a major turning point for Rundle as both an artist and as a person. The catharsis of this type of songwriting has effectively served its purpose, and to continue ruminating on the past going forward is less of a healing process and more like picking at a scab and refusing to let it heal. This may help explain why Rundle is less than enthusiastic about divulging the details about her muses, but it doesn’t alter the fact that these songs served a purpose in their creation, and that they may continue to bring comfort to others.

Enjoy today's tune "Return" from the upcoming album "Engine Of Hell", out 11/05 on Sargent House Pre-Order / Download / Stream: https://ffm.to/err-eoh The video featuring Angel / Death - Emma Ruth Rundle, Angel / Death Double - Sarah Ray Rundle and Dove - Gaige (handled with love and care by Bright Eyes Doves).
