Idles - Mother

If you don’t get blown away by IDLES, you may not get blown away by anything. This goes beyond whether you’re into rock or not. Rock it is, though. Spastic and rhythmical, captivating and polemic, intense and edgy in a postpunk sense, humorous and tragic, smart and dumb, exhilarated and pissed off, vulnerable and mean as hell, brave and scared shitless. IDLES question themselves, masculinity and their homeland, takes a stranglehold on nationalism and increasing narrowness, do not hold back all because why would they? It’s like they’re on a mission to recapture the concept of ”honesty” from those dark forces who claim to ”tell it like it is”. The underlying violence in the band’s music does actually express a concern that society no longer can offer.

Just in time for their tenth anniversary, things look good for the Bristol quintet. Lead vocalist Joe Talbot owns an ability to transform personal grief into universal anthems that attack all the listener’s senses and it’s done with full force on Joy As An Act Of Resistance, the band’s second album that was released last year. Solomon Burke’s soul classic Cry To Me sure is impeccable but the intensity IDLES bring into their version make the song something completely different than we’re used to. That’s just how it is with IDLES. Without preaching and without appearing superior they make you want to revalue, they make you want to change, they see every human as a hope and as an asset rather than a burden. A lot of people have a lot to learn from them.

IDLES did perform at 15.50 on Linné, Thursday Aug 8. Awesome show!

IDLES, are an English punk rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. Their debut album, Brutalism, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, as was their second album Joy as an Act of Resistance in 2018.

Today's tune "Mother" is taken from the debut album "Brutalism", released in March 2017.

The video was shot at Dilston Grove, one of CGP London's 2 galleries in the heart of Southwark Park in south London. CGP is an artist-led gallery founded in 1984 by The Bermondsey Artists' Group.

They commission major artworks by artists at all stages of their career. It's a vital part of London's art scene offering space and support that no-one else can across two stunning galleries.

Its an amazing cavernous raw space that hosts a lot of performance, music and live art. They rent it out in between shows to get the crucial funding they need to keep supporting artists. There's nowhere quite like it!

Dilston is one of the first poured concrete structures in the UK, built in 1909 by Cambridge University. It had been derelict since the 60s until the gallery took it on. There'd been a mission church on that site since 1896 after Bishop of Rochester, Edward Stuart TALBOT decided Cambridge should have a post in South London to support the poor.

Metallica - Mama Said

Sunday and it's the Mothers day.

A day that we all take care of our mothers all around the globe. My mother is not alive, but I have make sure that my kids have taken care of their mother and my wife. As we always do, we dedicate this day to all mothers and we play a classic tune in her favor. My kid's mother loves METALLICA, so let's pick a tune from them.

"Mama Said" is a country-rock ballad by American heavy metal band METALLICA from their sixth album "Load", with music and lyrics by James Hetfield (music credited to Hetfield/Ulrich). The lyrics represent a man or boy who is learning to find his own way in life away from his mother. The song is directly written about Hetfield's difficult relationship with his mother, who died of cancer when he was 16 years old.

The song is a departure from METALLICAs usual heavy metal sound; its genre-blending style incorporates country, blues, and hard rock. "Mama Said" begins with acoustic guitar and, during the chorus, becomes flush with a country-flavored vocal harmony and steel guitar. Toward the end, the song features power chords on electric guitar.

This is a song for James Hetfield's mother, who died of cancer when he was young. The song talks about his regrets of not being able to spend more time with her and how he hopes that she will still love him when he sees her again ("Mama now I'm coming home. I'm not all you wished of me. A mother's love for her son unspoken, help me be. Yeah I took your love for granted and all the things you said to me. I need your arms to welcome me. But a cold stone is all I see."), sad story but hey, he misses his mother and so do I.

"Mama Said" has never been featured as a part of METALLICAs live setlist. Hetfield has performed this song live, however, using a single steel-stringed acoustic guitar with no drum or bass accompaniment. He also performed it along with country singer Jessi Colter on CMT's Outlaw Concert, along with Hetfield's cover of Waylon Jennings's "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand."

Who knows, they might play this tune live during their tour, check all the dates below.

Bosnian Rainbows - Mother, Father, Set Us Free

The support band for Tomahawk the other day was the alternative rockers "Bosnian Rainbows". A band that I had not heard before, but was actually very curious when I heard that Omar Rodríguez-López was in the band. His involvement in the Mars Volta is totally magical so this must be something.

Sure, this was good, a bit different, a little wacky with a well dressed electro-clad squeaks rock, but with a great swing in the melodies. The singer Teri reminded at times of Björk, but with her own peculiarities, a bit crazy, but with full control, where she at one point jumps down from the stage and disappears into the crowd, the band jams on and then she shows up in the middle, right in front of the stage, she stands on the riot fence with her back to the audience, singing a bit before she makes her stage dive, but she jumps out backwards. In total a great support act for another great band. If you got the chance to see them live, please do so as this is absolutly worth watching live.

Bosnian Rainbows is an American alternative rock band from El Paso, Texas, formed in 2012. The band consists of former The Mars Volta members, Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar, backing vocals) and Deantoni Parks (drums, keyboards), alongside Le Butcherettes vocalist Teri Gender Bender and Nicci Kasper (keyboards).

Initially billed as a variation on the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group, the band was formed following Rodriguez-Lopez's putting his primary project, The Mars Volta, on hiatus.

Todays tune "Mother, Father, Set Us Free" is taken from the self titled debut album with "Bosnian Rainbows", released June 24, 2013. The album was recorded and produced by Johann Scheerer at Clouds Hill Studios in Hamburg, Germany in October 2012, during a break in band's touring schedule. All the recording, as well as mixing, was made on analog gear, without using computers. All lyrics written by Teresa Suárez, all music composed by Bosnian Rainbows.

The live clip is from the First Unitarian Church - Los Angeles, CA - 2013-06-25

Lita Ford - Mother

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May. It complements Father's Day, a similar celebration honoring fathers.

The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration. Despite this, in some countries Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.

As the American holiday was adopted by other countries and cultures, the date was changed to fit already existing celebrations honoring motherhood, such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom or, in Greece, the Orthodox celebration of the presentation of Jesus Christ to the temple (2 February). In Sweden the celebration occurs on the last Sunday in May.

Todays tune "Mother" to celebrate my wife and mother to my children. This one is for you baby! Love you! The tune is taken from the eighth studio album "Living Like a Runaway" from American rock-musician Lita Ford, released in June 2012.

Lita Rossana Ford (born 19 September 1958) is an American rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, who was the lead guitarist for The Runaways in the late 1970s before embarking on a solo career in the 1980s.

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye

Just returned from a short little trip to the northern part of Sweden and my home town for burial of my dear mother. Funerals are among the toughest things you can go through, especially when it is a close relative that passing away.

Starting with that one cries when you're in church, crying even more when it's time to lower the coffin into the soil, where after you eat and then you laugh, very strange really, but that is how it works in Sweden. But it was good to take a last farewell, and hope that I do not have to visit more funerals in a while. So with this song i say Goodbye mum, rest in peace, have a good one.

Todays tune "Last Goodbye" is the third track on Grace by the singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. It is also his second video. This song was originally titled "Unforgiven"; as stated on his official website by his mother, Buckley went through a metamorphosis with many of his songs, and it is evident when one hears early versions of "Unforgiven", one of which can be heard on Live at Sin-é (Legacy Edition), and the final version of the song heard on Grace.

Ian Hunter - Rest In Peace, London Astoria (2004) A tune by Mott The Hoople taken from "The Hoople"(1974) out-take was B-side on "Golden Age of Rock n' Roll" single. Ian often opens the show with this song that holds up so well 30 years on. This tune will sum up the last farwell from me to my mum.

Elvis Presley - Always On My Mind

Today is a sad day, at least for me, "Stones", I was told early this morning from my sister that my mother had passed away, heavy, oh yes, is there something worse than a part of you going away. She, who was so close to me throughout my childhood, a person who showed me the right path, gave me the basics of everything. Shit, this became a bit hard for me now.

My Mom has been a sick for some time now, so it was expected, so I prepared myself a little inside that soon it will happen, that she is no more, a day that will be very bothersome, like this day, it fills your eyes with liquid and soon the tears fall down.

Mom was a nice person, stubborn lady but deep down incredibly kind and thoughtful. I had a pretty good childhood, considering that Dad left us quite early on, was just 5 years old when he "fell asleep". There were ups and downs, but on the whole, it has been very good.

I remember when I was just a lill boy and was introduced to Elvis Presley as my mother thought I would like and sure the hell I did. When we went out to the country house in Mamma's red Volvo was almost always Elvis that was played in the car, then on cassette. Got my first Elvis on Vinyl by Mom, i think I was around eight years old, the album was played on a "travelling gramophone", you know, one of those players in a suitcase were the speaker is located in the lid. I could say that Elvis was the start of my interest to music. However it was not Elvis that was my first record purchase for the hard saved weekly money, it was something else entirely.

Now I want you "Mom" to rest in peace and when times comes and you will return to Earth, you are more than welcome to come over for a visit, here you will get fine roasted coffee and Elvis played on Vinyl.

I dedicate today's song to my Mother, a song with Elvis, because the first I think of when i hear Elvis is my Mom. So this is the best way to honor her and for me to say goodbye Mom.

So now I feel immediately much better and can probably consider that the first part of the grieving process is over. Soon awaiting a funeral in the north where siblings and close relatives are going to attend, where i can take the last farewell.
