Gnoomes – Sword In The Stone

GNOOMES, the Russian outfit who blend a potent mix of psychedelic stargaze, kraut techno and kosmiche pop, they released the album, "MU!" their third for Rocket Recordings.

Since the release of their last album "Tschak!" the three piece has turned into a quartet with synth player Masha Piankova joining the band. And it was the success of their tours in the UK and Europe that subconsciously created a template and tone for where the band would go next with this new album; to capture that surging drive and throbbing assault of their pulverising live shows. “We decided to make this record more live and less electronic,” Sasha, singer and guitarist from GNOOMES said. “We were thinking about how to make it sound more dynamic.” Masha’s introduction was a key one, with her replacing Sasha on synth bass whilst he moved over to second guitar to add a fuller and more impactful sonic crunch.

"MU!" has been part recorded in the same old soviet radio station where the band recorded "Tschak!" part in a professional studio and then part at home. This was to ensure the best capture of GNOOMES live assault. The results brim with a magnitude and sense of coherence that belies some of the environment it was created in. Fuzz-driven guitars shift in engulfing waves, resembling shoegaze giants at their most ferocious, whilst elsewhere layered vocals stack on top of one another, weaving between pristine melody and augmented discordance. Whilst the glacial electronics and coldwave tendencies that soaked much of their previous album may be more absent here, this record pulses with an electronic tinge that bubbles more subtly under the surface of immersive guitars.

The title "MU!" has Japanese origins and comes from Zen Buddhism – something Sasha began to practise during past trying times - meaning both “no” and “nothingness” and the understanding that the acceptance of this concept can lead to enlightenment. “For me personally it’s a spiritual record,” he says. Although any sonic warbles of new age blandness couldn’t be further from the end results here. This is a cleansing record, no doubt, but one that washes over you with both brutal force and deft subtleness.

With the completion of this album, it also wraps up a trio of records all connected via punctuation – "Ngan!", "Tschak!", "MU!" - but with one each distinct in its own tone and sense of evolution. From Bowie to the CURE to MODERAT, musical history is peppered with great musical trilogies and now GNOOMES’ Exclamation Mark Trilogy can be added to that.

Today's tune "Sword In The Stone", taken from the album "MU!", released 2019, enjoy!

Enforcer - Kiss Of Death

ENFORCER are the leaders of a new generation of metal bands that remain true to the roots of metal in terms of setting, sound, and appearance. A hint towards modern bands, as they were particularly mid-00s-years popular.

The band was founded in 2004 in Arvika, a small town in Sweden far away from everything. With the release of their debut album "Into The Night" in late 2008, ENFORCER stated their opposition to the trend of over-produced, plastic-sounding albums with tons of tracks and triggered drums. "Into The Night" was a pure metal album in the tradition of acts such as EXCITER, AGENT STEEL, and ANVIL.

A brand new single and video for the song "Kiss Of Death" is now released, a tune that sounds like ENFORCER, a tight and well-crafted one, see it below.

ENFORCER are:
Olof Wikstrand (Vocals, Guitar)
Jonas Wikstrand (Drums, Piano, Keyboards)
Tobias Lindqvist (Bass)
Jonathan Nordwall (Guitars)

Olof Wikstrand comments: "Heavy metal fans across the planet, are you with us?! Finally, it’s time for us to unveil what we’ve been up to the past year and it feels incredibly awesome to present "Kiss Of Death" to you all. A totally raw, yet melodic speed metal hymn! A hit and run metal hymn that should leave no head unbanged!!"

Enjoy today's tune!

Thy Catafalque - Vadak

Monday, new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week"

THY CATAFALQUE has visited Tune Of The Day several times, both as today's tune and "Record Of The Week", now it's time again to ascend the throne and receive the fine award. THY CATAFALQUE do not pretend to produce easy-listening music that comes as easy as it quickly fades out of the mind again. "Vadak", is the Hungarian act’s tenth full-length album, demands to be listened to with full attention, but with every new spin this masterpiece reveals more of its secrets and rewards the listener with a rich treasure of fascinating details.

I can only marvel at the creative vein that "Tamás Kátai" possesses as his project is extremely consistent when it comes to album releases. "Vadak" is just marvelous, a fantastic mix of all different styles that are composed with both style and finesse. From the groovy electronic opening of "Szarvas" with some blackended spices to the folkish following "Köszöntsd A Hajnalt" to the blackended metal in "Gömböc" to the more furious industrial metal "Az Energiamegmaradás Törvénye" and the ten minutes "Móló" gives this record a marvelous start. The second half starts with the jazzy "A Kupolaváros Titka" followed by gypsy folksih piece "Kiscsikó (Irénke Dala)" with marching drums and a lovly guitar playing. "Piros-sárga" a synth feel good tune until it's time for the next monster "Vadak (Az Átváltozás Rítusai)" a twelve minute blistering thing, with glorious guitar, hard hitting drums, marvelous keys, that includes both metal, folk and beautiful passages between the furious technicality and the guest vocals by Martina Veronika Horváth’s that you can hear throughout the album are just stunning and she sings lovly in the album closer "Zúzmara" where a piano shares the musical present. "Vadak" is marvelous journey where you can expect the unexpected and still, you’ll be surprised by his compsions. The album is not for everyone, but those who has a open musical mind will get themselves greatly rewarded by the experience "Vadak" can give you as a listner.

Sum: A marvelous musical labryinth to enjoy in the hammock.

"Vadak" was recorded in Budapest, Hungary | Edinburgh, Scotland | Újvidék / Novi Sad, Serbia | Kolozsvár / Cluj-Napoca, Romania | Kharkov, Ukraine | Tuapse, Russia | Alicante, Spain | Quarten, Switzerland | Haifa, Israel | Austin, Texas, U.S.A. | São Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2020 / 2021. Mixed by Tamás Kátai in Budapest, Hungary, January, 2021. Mastered by Colin Davis at Imperial Mastering, Texas, U.S.A., February 2021. Cover artwork by Tamás Kátai. The album was released June 25th, 2021 via Season of Mist.

Christian Kjellvander - Midsummer

Midsummer is the period of time in the middle of the summer. The exact dates vary among different cultures, but is primarily held close to the summer solstice. The celebration predates Christianity, and has existed under different names and traditions around the world.

In Sweden, the Midsummer is such an important festivity that there have been proposals to make the Midsummer's Eve the National Day of Sweden, instead of June 6. In Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Midsummer's festival is a public holiday. In Denmark and Norway, it may also be referred to as St. Hans Day.

Raising and dancing around a maypole (majstång or midsommarstång) is an activity that attracts families and many others. Greenery placed over houses and barns was supposed to bring good fortune and health to people and livestock; this old tradition of decorating with greens continues, though most people no longer take it seriously. To decorate with greens was called att maja (to may) and may be the origin of the word majstång, maja coming originally from the month May, or vice versa. Other researchers say the term came from German merchants who raised the maypole in June because the Swedish climate made it impossible to find the necessary greens and flowers in May, and continued to call it a maypole.

In earlier times, small spires wrapped in greens were erected; this probably predates the maypole tradition, which is believed by many to have come from the continent in the Middle Ages.

In Sweden Midsummer's day is a Saturday between June 20 and June 26, but as is usual in Sweden the actual celebration is on the eve, i.e. a Friday between June 19 and June 25. Midsummer's Eve is a de facto public holiday in Sweden with offices and many shops closed.

Like in Norway and Finland, it is believed that if a girl picks 7 different flowers in silence of the midsummer night and puts them underneath her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

Another tradition on a Swedish Midsummer is to end it with a skinny dip at night. It's not mandatory to be naked, but many will be completely naked accompanied with an old or new partner after a couple of the famous schnapps.

Today's tune "Midsummer" is taken from the album "A Village: Natural Light", released Oct 14th 2016.

Sons Of Apollo - Gates Of Babylon

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Gates Of Babylon" is a tune taken from the third studio album "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" by the British hard rock band RAINBOW, released in 1978 and the last to feature original lead vocalist Ronnie James Dio.

"Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" was recorded in April 1977 at a studio in Château d'Hérouville, France, featuring Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell. Keyboards were initially played on a session basis by former RAINBOW member Tony Carey, while bass parts were started by Mark Clarke. Clarke was soon dismissed, however, and the bass parts were recorded by Blackmore himself. By July 1977 seven tracks that ended on the album were in demo form. Recording was suspended while the band recruited Bob Daisley and David Stone and thereafter commenced extensive touring of Europe in the summer and fall of 1977. A return to the Château d'Hérouville studio in December saw the band finish the album and also yielded a final track, "Gates Of Babylon".

Although Daisley and Stone are listed on the album credits for their contributions, they joined the band partway through the recording sessions and only appear on three and four songs, respectively. Stone wrote parts of "Gates Of Babylon" but was never credited.

From 2004 to his death in 2010, Dio's solo shows featured a live version of "Kill The King", "Gates Of Babylon", and the title track.

Today's tune "Gates Of Babylon" is made by the American progressive metal band SONS OF APOLLO, they covered "Gates Of Babylon" on their 2019 CD/DVD box "Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony".

Red Fang – Arrows

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Portland, Oregon quartet RED FANG have established themselves as one of the heavy rockers more engaging acts. Since the start with amazing 2011's "Murder The Mountains" and last release with 2016's "Only Ghosts", they have with thier infectious gooves and energetic powerful riffs made a name in the riff rock scene, a band that most nowerdays knows about.

"Arrows" is the fifth full-lengt album and was recorded at Halfling Studios in the band’s hometown of Portland, OR, with longtime collaborator Chris Funk, producer of "Murder The Mountains" and 2013’s "Whales And Leeches". The album was released June 4, 2021 via Relapse Records.

"Arrows", takes a slightly different direction for the band, loose screws and half inflated tires, the wheels are more dirty and the sound is woozy and gruffy where influenses could easly be HIGH ON FIRE, MELVINS and ORANGE GOBLIN. From the opening rumble intro "Take It Back" via the stoner rocker "Unreal Estate" and the crunchy doomish title track "Arrows". Tunes like full blown punkish "My Disaster" and "Dr. Owl" are cool break outs in the album along with the sharp stomp of "Rabbits In Hives". The tune "Fonzi Scheme", a tune was named after legendary Happy Days cool guy Arthur Fonzarelli. Producer Chris Funk came up with the idea of bringing in string players from the Portland Cello Project to class up the track. A track that shines MASTODON and BARONESS. Beautiful guitars in the half paced "Days Collide", where the vocals are a little more dark and withdrawn. "Why"is a magnificent thing where the bass licks gets a lot of space. The opening riff of closer "Funeral Coach" was written 11 years ago. Of course you get thoughts back to the debut, sounds magically good.

On "Arrows" do we get a adventurous journey in the dirt pit where we get served some of the dirtiest and space mutated riffs in RED FANG catalog. And they do a marvelous job to take the next step and take experimental risks with the new material. Check it up!

Sum: A grand return of RED FANG!

Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Workin'

Sunday, time for a classic!

Muddy Waters, was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician who was an important figure in the post-war blues scene, and is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues." His style of playing has been described as "raining down Delta beatitude."

Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.

In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band—Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elga Edmonds (also known as Elgin Evans) on drums and Otis Spann on piano—recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man," "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready." In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.

Muddy Waters' music has influenced various American music genres, including rock and roll and rock music.

Today's tune "Got My Mojo Working" is a blues song written by Preston "Red" Foster and first recorded by R&B singer Ann Cole in 1956. Foster's lyrics describe several amulets or talismans, called mojo, which are associated with hoodoo, an early African-American folk-magic belief system.

In 1957, Muddy Waters adapted the song with some different lyrics and a new musical arrangement. It was a feature of his performances throughout his career, with a live version recorded in 1960 identified as the best known. Waters' rendition has received several awards and otherwise recognized by various organizations and publications. As a blues standard, it has been recorded by numerous blues and other artists.

The video clip is from the "Blues Masters" 1966 Canadian TV, enjoy!

Mammoth WVH - Don't Back Down

First impressions last a lifetime. Wolfgang Van Halen has prepared a lifetime to make his first impression with his solo band MAMMOTH WVH. The songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist worked tirelessly on material that would become his debut album. Playing every instrument and singing each and every note, his music presents a personal and powerful perspective, balancing memorable hooks and tight technicality. As many times as audiences have experienced his talent alongside the likes of Tremonti, Clint Lowery, and of course, VAN HALEN, Wolfgang prepares to step into the spotlight with his own brand - MAMMOTH WVH - for the very first time now.

“The name MAMMOTH is really special to me.” says Wolf. “Not only was it the name of VAN HALEN before it became VAN HALEN, but my father was also the lead singer. Ever since my dad told me this, I always thought that when I grew up, I’d call my own band MAMMOTH, because I loved the name so much. I’m so thankful that my father was able to listen to, and enjoy the music I made. Nothing made me happier than seeing how proud he was that I was continuing the family legacy.”

The band members joining Wolf in MAMMOTH WVH are Ronnie Ficarro (bass/vocals), Jon Jourdan (guitars/vocals), Frank Sidoris (guitars) and Garret Whitlock (drums).

MAMMOTH WVH is the debut, self-titled album of MAMMOTH WVH – the band created by Wolfgang Van Halen – that includes 14 new songs on a double vinyl, CD, Digital Download and streaming. This collection includes the #1 Hit Single, "Distance” plus “You’re to Blame”, “Don’t Back Down,” “Epiphany,” and more. At the beginning of 2015, Wolf broke ground on what would become MAMMOTH WVH with producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette [ALTER BRIDGE, Slash] behind the board. Wolf began to embrace his voice, inspired by everyone from his father, to bands like AC/DC, FOO FIGHTERS, NINE INCH NAILS, TOOL, and JIMMY EAT WORLD. In addition to writing and singing every song on the self-title debut album, remarkably Wolfgang plays every instrument.

Today's tune "Don't Back Down" is taken from the new self titled album, enjoy!

Unto Others - When Will Gods Work Be Done

Portland, Oregon’s UNTO OTHERS (IDLE HANDS) have announced their signing to Roadrunner Records and shared a brand-new single, "When Will Gods Work Be Done". The new music video is directed by Brock Grossl, which premiered today via Decibel Magazine alongside a Q&A with UNTO OTHERS’ vocalist / guitarist Gabriel Franco.

Commenting on the new release and news of the signing, Franco remarked “Our last full length came out over two years ago and much has changed, including the band and I, our name, etc... so I consider this a reintroduction of ‘us’ to those who connected with our music in the past, as well as a debut for the many who haven't. We did our best, and that's all we can do. So out of the frying pan, and into the fire, I think we have all been frying long enough".

UNTO OTHERS’ innovative combination of goth, rock and metal brings the genre to entirely new and unique places. They are pushing the genre beyond the expected to create a blend of heavy, dark, melodic songs combined with traditional metal.

Comprised of Gabriel Franco (Vocals / Guitar), Brandon Hill (Bass), Sebastian Silva (Guitar), and Colin Vranizan (Drums), UNTO OTHERS formed in Portland, OR in 2017 and quickly made waves out of the Pacific Northwest under their previous band name IDLE HANDS. Following 2018’s "Don’t Waste Your Time" EP, they released their debut full-length album "Mana" in 2019 to widespread acclaim. Citing their harmonious marriage of goth rock and traditional heavy metal.

Stereogum named UNTO OTHERS one of the “40 Best New Bands of 2019” noting, “In an alternate reality where the ‘80s dalliance with both genres took hold into future decades, nearly every song on the band’s debut would be a hit.”

Next up, UNTO OTHERS will join BEHEMOTH!, ARCH ENEMY and CARCASS for a massive European fall tour, kicking off September 28th in Dublin, Ireland and running for six weeks through November 7 at Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway.

Thin Lizzy - Rosalie

Thursday, time for cover.

"Rosalie" is a tune written by American rock singer-songwriter Bob Seger, taken from the sixth studio album "Back In '72", released in 1973. It was the first new album on Seger's manager Punch Andrews' label, Palladium Records, to be released under their distribution deal with the Reprise division of Warner Bros. Records and one of several early Seger albums that has never been reissued on CD.

Today's tune "Rosalie" is about Rosalie Trombley, the Canadian former music director of AM Top 40 radio station CKLW, also known as "The Big 8". She was known for her ability to select songs that would later become big hits. At the time, she was one of the few female music directors in AM top 40; Kal Rudman, editor of the Friday Morning Quarterback, a music trade publication, referred to her as "the number one music director in the United States." Her influence as a music director later led to an annual award being named after her.

Trombley was immortalized by Bob Seger in his 1973 song "Rosalie", ("She's got the tower, she's got the power / Rosalie"). (The song was later covered by Irish band THIN LIZZY, on their 1975 album "Fighting" and again on their 1978 LP "Live And Dangerous".) Seger wrote it in frustration at not being able to get his songs played on CKLW at that time. There are differing stories concerning Trombley’s reaction to the tune: some claim she hated “Rosalie” and refused to allow her DJs to play it; others insist the programmer was flattered, but worried about a potential conflict of interest. Either way, CKLW never played "Rosalie", although the song did receive spins on other Detroit stations, as well as top-40 outlets as far away as Idaho

Enjoy today's cover with THIN LIZZY. The non-album track "Half-Caste" was released on the B-Side of the original "Rosalie" single.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Yours

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD have shared a new video for the new single and the album opener "Yours". The video is the first of ten new visuals set to accompany new album "Butterfly 3000", which was released on Friday via KGLW / Virgin Music Australia.

That the band is very creative by now we know well, their album releases come quite close with new directions, new steps and absolutely fantastic I think. The new album follows 17 studio albums, including the recently-released "K.G." and "L.W."

Similar to its two predecessors, "Butterfly 3000" was executed in isolation, recorded entirely in the band members’ own homes, their studio and rehearsal space remaining out-of-bounds. First and foremost, the band were writing this new material on unfamiliar equipment, like modular synthesizers. “As we’re not very skilled at them and don’t have the deepest knowledge of this stuff, we’d get happy accidents – lots of weird, wrong, broken sounds we flipped and looped and turned into songs.” Says Stu Mackenzie.

Amby: Percussion, Vocals, Harmonica
Cavs: Drums
Stu: Synthesiser, Vocals, Mellotron, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums

Recorded by King Gizzard in the year 3021
Mixed by Stu Mackenzie
Mastered by Joe Carra

Today's tune "Yours" is taken from the new album "Butterfly 3000". The video was Shot and Directed by John Angus Stewart - http://www.johnangusstewart.com/ / https://phcfilms.com/ Produced by Max Coles - https://www.youtube.com/c/PHCFILMS

Seven Sisters - Horizon's Eye

The British heavy metal flagbearers SEVEN SISTERS have released the new track "Horizon’s Eye", taken from their next upcoming album, "Shadow Of A Fallen Star Part 1", which will be released 22 October 2021. The album is a follow-up to "The Cauldron And The Cross", which was released in 2016.

The album is a sci-fi concept album that tells a story dreamt up by frontman Kyle McNeill, and "Horizon’s Eye" is an excellent piece in a typical SEVEN SISTERS style and gives a great heads up on what to come.

“The story follows a young woman who uncovers some grim secrets about the operation of the planet, and after being contacted by the alien through her dreams, she decides to set it free. The album ends at the part when she leaves The Great Library along with the alien. The next album will deal with the second half of the story.”

King Buffalo – The Burden Of Restlessness

Monday, time to present "Record Of The Week".

The Rochester trio KING BUFFALO is havening a boom in the creation cabbin, last year we got the 2020 release "Dead Star". And as far as the rumours says this new release "The Burden Of Restlessness" is the first of three that we are going to get this year.

"The Burden Of Restlessness" was written over the course of what most would consider a pretty stark and stressful time period. The end result is our darkest, most aggressive, and most intimate work to date. We are extremely proud of what this record became.” – Sean McVay

The trio of Sean, Dan, and Scott have once again created a marvlous piece of art on "The Burden Of Restlessness". It's a powerful concoction of heavy psych, blues, and stoner rock in stunning cohesion.

The album opens up with "Burning", where the rythm section of the bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson that build up the space until the light guitar plink by vocalist/guitarist Sean McVay and the clear and impressive bass riffs creats something so simple and so magnific. The vocals feels incredibly comfortable and is just right in the mix. "Hebetation" is a groovy piece with a popish prog attitude along catchy lyrics and some electronica to boost up things. The electronic addons continues in the trippy piece "Locusts". "Silverfish" is a an intressting tune, some nice twincles that increases during the journey along with Sean smooth vocals. Half way thru the riffs gets heavier and heavier even the singing becomes more strained. The funky "Grifter" is a relly cool tune that burst up from time to time. "The Knocks" shows a little more beep and spout in the guitar in a very nice flow where the thoughts go away and pat Genesis and Frank Zappa on the shoulder. An amazing guitar playing in the end of the tune. The album closes up with "Loam", hand pick intro in an ambient environment with smooth vocals and really beautiful bass playing. Halfway thru that tune burst out with some heavier layout and some incredible guitar playing.

Sum: "The Burden Of Restlessness" is clever and marvelous made piece of music, it soft and smooth and in the same time hard and heavy. This is an album for any atmospheric psychedelic heavy rock fans out there. Get it!

"The Burden Of Restlessness" was released June 4, 2021. Written and recorded by KING BUFFALO in Rochester, NY at the Main Street Armory in December of 2020 & January of 2021. Produced, Engineered and Mixed by Sean McVay. Mastered by Bernie Matthews. Artwork by Zdzisław Beksiński, Cover Fonts by Mike Turzanski, Layout by Scott Donaldson

Today's tune "Silverfish" is taken from "The Burden Of Restlessness", enjoy!

Montrose - Bad Motor Scooter

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Bad Motor Scooter" was the second track from the self titled debut album by the rock band MONTROSE. It, along with "Rock Candy", was arguably the best known song by the band. The song was penned by frontman Sammy Hagar. Its introduction, a distorted electric slide guitar sound which closely emulates that of a revving motorcycle, became the defining component of the song. When the song was conceived before this guitar sound, the band and Ted Templeman were not impressed because they thought it was missing a "hook", to make it stand out. Ronnie Montrose stumbled upon it while messing with a slide and fuzz box one day in the studio. Playing his guitar in Open D tuning, Montrose improvised what became the motorcycle sound — although Templeman and engineer Donn Landee kept him going when they failed to get the recording tape rolling.

When performed live by the original MONTROSE line up, Sammy Hagar would play the "motorcycle" introduction on a lap steel slide guitar. Hagar provided the same intro when CHICKENFOOT, the supergroup composed of Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith, performed a version during their live performances. Joe Satriani did the "motorcycle" introduction at the Montrose tribute concert using the whammy bar on his guitar instead of the slide guitar.

The song has also been included on the Sammy Hagar compilation "The Essential Red Collection".

MONTROSE was a California-based hard rock band formed in 1973 and named after guitarist and founder Ronnie Montrose. The band's original lineup featured Montrose and vocalist Sammy Hagar, who later gained greater fame as a solo artist and as a member of VAN HALEN. Rounding out the original foursome were bassist Bill Church and drummer Denny Carmassi. The group disbanded in early 1977.

Linton Kwesi Johnson - Making History

Today it was time for Record Store Day 2021, Drop 1.

A few new records was baught, that including the repress of the dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson "Making History" from 1984.

Linton Kwesi Johnson (born 24 August 1952), also known as LKJ, is a Jamaican dub poet and activist who has been based in the United Kingdom since 1963. In 2002 he became the second living poet, and the only black poet, to be published in the Penguin Modern Classics series.[1][2] His performance poetry involves the recitation of his own verse in Jamaican patois over dub-reggae, usually written in collaboration with renowned British reggae producer/artist Dennis Bovell.

"Making History" is an album by the dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. It was released in 1984 on Island Records. It was produced by Dennis Bovell. Trouser Press called the album "as vital as any [Johnson and Bovell] had made together." The New York Times wrote: "Dennis Bovell ... has fashioned settings for the poems on Making History that draw their melodies directly from the inflections and intonation of the lines. Most selections sport catchy instrumental melodies that weave in and out of the poetry, making it sound much like song."

NME ranked it number 16 among the "Albums of the Year" for 1984.

The RSD version of the album is Expanded LP edition, featuring the original album + three bonus tracks. Bespoke gatefold sleeve with enhanced artwork. Remastered at Abbey Road, released on heavyweight YELLOW coloured vinyl. Produced by Linton Kwesi Johnson and the legendary Dennis Bovell (‘Blackbeard’), the album continues LKJ’s fierce, politically-charged view of Britain at the time. His outspoken comments on the 1981 Brixton riots, the New Cross fire that killed 13 black teenagers and confronting the National Front are all tackled but with an accessible and strident dub-reggae beat. Extensive liner notes from the original LP, by the late political activist and journalist Darcus Howe, are included in the package. Darcus was depicted in the recent Steve McQueen film, ‘Small Axe: Mangrove’ on BBC TV. Out of print on vinyl for many years.

Today's tune "Making History" is the title tune from the album with the same name. The Video is filmed live at Channel 4's The Tube 1984, Enjoy!
