Kate Clover - These Boots Are Made For Walkin'

Thursday, time for a cover.

"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" is a hit song written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by Nancy Sinatra. It charted on January 22, 1966 and reached No. 1 in the United States Billboard Hot 100 and in the UK Singles Chart.

Lee Hazlewood intended to record the song himself, saying that "it's not really a girl's song", but Sinatra talked him out of it, saying that "coming from a guy it was harsh and abusive, but was perfect for a little girl to sing". Hazlewood agreed. Sinatra's recording of the song was made with the help of Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. This session included Chuck Berghofer on double bass, providing the notable bass line with its quarter-tone descent. The session was held on November 19, 1965 at United Western Recorders in Hollywood, and additionally produced the songs "Foursome" and "The City Never Sleeps at Night."

“These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” tells the tale of someone who's had enough. She's clearly been putting up with the bad behaviour of a partner or lover for some time…doing her best to forgive and forget.

Subsequently, many cover versions of the song have been released in a range of styles: metal, pop, rock, punk rock, country, dance, and industrial. Among the more notable versions are the singles released by MEGADETH, Billy Ray Cyrus, Haley Reinhart, and Jessica Simpson.

“If Suicide produced a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song” is a hell of a tag line, and Kate Clover’s “These Boots” delivers on that premise. The menacing guitar seems pulled straight from “Frankie Teardrop,” while Clover’s vocals channel Sinatra’s swagger. Bonus points for the fun Twin Peaks-esque video.

Today's cover "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" (Featuring Warren Thomas), enjoy!

Korn - Start The Healing

"Start the Healing" is a song by American nu metal band KORN, released as the first single from their fourteenth studio album "Requiem".

Recording during the pandemic gave the band an opportunity to experiment, and this song finds them adding new-wave influences. "There's still that core sound there, but this time we did this we had the luxury, we were on a forced time-out," Davis told Audacy's Carlota. "We had all the time in the world."

The music video for Start the Healing was directed by Tim Saccenti, known for his work with RUN THE JEWELS, FLYING LOTUS, and DEPECHE MODE. 3D artist Anthony Ciannamea also assisted with visuals. The music video was leaked a day ahead of its intended release, revealing Fieldy's absence from the video. It amassed over 500,000 views within the first 24 hours of its official release.

Featuring scenes described as "ethereal" and "otherworldly", the music video is largely influenced by surrealism and body horror. The band is seen playing throughout, among the presence of humanoid entities, mutating beasts, and what appear to be aliens.

"Our idea for this video was to mutate that aspect of the DNA of KORN, of what makes them so inspiring, their mix of raw power and transportive aesthetics and human emotion. I wanted to take the viewer on an emotional journey, as the song does, a visceral, cathartic death and rebirth that will hopefully help transport the listener through whatever their personal struggles are. Collaborating with 3D artist Anthony Ciannamea, we tapped into KORN's mythology and explored their vast well of light and darkness to create a surreal, liminal-pace body-horror nightmare." - Tim Saccenti

Jonathan Davis – vocals
James Shaffer – guitar
Brian Welch – guitarReginald Arvizu – bass guitar
Reginald Arvizu – bass guitar
Ray Luzier – drums

Today's tune "Start The Healing", taken from the latest album "Requiem", yhe album was released on February 4, 2022 through Loma Vista and Concord. It was produced by the band and Chris Collier, enjoy!

White Lies - Am I Really Going To Die

"As I Try Not To Fall Apart" is the sixth full-length release for British trio WHITE LIES was produced by Ed Buller and Claudius Mittendorfer. Released 18th February 2022.

WHITE LIES have been known for their moody and anthemic songs, where the tunes mostly were melancholy and brooding and somehow this feels different to previous outings, but I have heard it to few times to make a review but I will share the title track.

The album had four singles released ahead of its release: the title track, "I Don't Want to Go to Mars", "Am I Really Going to Die", and "Blue Drift".

Harry McVeigh (lead vocals, guitar),
Charles Cave (bass guitar and backing vocals),
and Jack Lawrence-Brown (drums)

Placebo - Never Let Me Go

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Never Let Me Go" is the long-awaited 8th studio album by the British veterans PLACEBO, their first album in almost a decade, nine years on from the release of their last outing "Loud Like Love", "Never Let Me Go" was released on March 25th, 2022.

PLACEBO has returned as a duo, the core songwriting pair of founders Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal looks like they're more focused than ever, delivering a reliably artsy and modern set of tunes that fits this time period perfectly.

"Never Let Me Go" spans over thirteen tunes and a play time just under 60 minutes. The music is full of energy and falls somewhere between cyber-punk fuzz and electrified scuzzy rock. The barrier sets already with the opener "Forever Chemicals", electronic distortion and the distinctive PLACEBO brand vocals with his typical nihilism. A grand opening that is followed by the great single "Beautiful James", a powerful and grand tune with a spacey synth atomsphere and so goes with the stellar "Happy Birthday In The Sky". "Hugz" is an energic rocker with a chaotic punkish feel while the "The Prodigal" is a orchestral beauty, the turns are large and wide on this album, which also satisfactory the listening hour. Some true paranoia is served with "Surrounded By Spies" and a cool groove on "Sad White Reggae" and the chugging riffs in "Twin Demons" is a true delight, one of my favorites on the record, followed by the post punkish "Chemtrails" and the halfpaced tunes "This Is What You Wanted" and "Went Missing" before it's time to close the album with electronic "Fix Yourself", a tune about take care of your own business before you start fiddling with someone else.

"Never Let Me Go" is a great album that really showcase the band on higher level of songwriting and it's so contemporary and emotional.

Today's tune "Beautiful James", taken from "Never Let Me Go", enjoy!

Taylor Hawkins - Somebody To Love

Another hero has left us, Taylor Hawkins, mostly known as the happy drummer in FOO FIGHTERS.

On March 25, 2022, emergency services were called to the Casa Medina hotel in Bogotá, Colombia, where Hawkins was suffering from chest pain in his hotel room. Health personnel arrived and found Hawkins unresponsive; they performed CPR, but he was declared dead at the scene. No cause of death was given.

Hawkins was scheduled to perform with the FOO FIGHTERS that night at the Estéreo Picnic Festival as part of their ongoing South American tour; the festival stage was turned into a candlelight vigil for Hawkins

Taylor Hawkins performing "Somebody to Love" at his last live perfomance along with FOO FIGHTERS, the song was written by the singer/pianist Freddie Mercury from the British rock band QUEEN. It was orginally released on the band's 1976 album "A Day at the Races". Enjoy this clip from Chile 18/03/2022. R.I.P. Taylor! Thanks for the ride!

The Vintage Caravan - Whispers

Virtuosic ‘70s rock guitar ruminations encounter an irrefutable mixture of astonishing modern elements and classic psychedelic / progressive rock trademarks of the Icelandic frontrunners THE VINTAGE CARAVAN released their fifth studio album, "Monuments", on April 16, 2021 via Napalm Records.

After countless high-voltage live performances at festivals such as Roadburn, Wacken and Hellfest, and touring with OPETH, the Icelandic band’s new full-length impressively demonstrates that they have matured both musically and lyrically – presenting their very own potent mixture accented by bold, nostalgic nuance.

These youngbloods from Reykjavik truly cast a spell on fans of bewitching, guitar-driven classic and blues rock influences. As on today's tune "Whispers", the album opener they clearly showcases the band’s musical progression without sacrificing their tried-and-true, retro-inspired sonic trademark.

The band was formed in 2006 by Óskar Logi Ágústsson and Guðjón Reynisson before bassist Alexander Örn Númason joined after the first studio album. As of 2021, the band have released five studio albums and are currently signed with Napalm Records.

Today's tune "Whispers", taken from the latest album "Monuments" was produced and mixed by Ian Davenport. Video directed, shot and edited by: Gottskálk Daði, Bernhöft Reynisson at RKK I RVK. Camera Assistants: Hákon J. Helgason, Gunnar Már Halldórsson. Enjoy!

Tears For Fears - No Small Thing

The English pop rock band TEARS FOR FEARS are back and have released the band’s first new album in 17 years, "The Tipping Point". I do not want to say that I am a pop string, but I must say that this sounds very good so I have to share the video for "No Small Thing", the second single and opening track off the new album

As TEARS FOR FEARS previously told Rolling Stone, after years of false starts and failed collaborations when recording their new album, “No Small Thing” marked a breakthrough for the band, as Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith sat down in a room together to write music for the first time since their teen years.

“In early 2020, Curt and I sat down together with just a couple of acoustic guitars. The first time in decades. We needed a meeting of minds, a coming together psychically. We were literally going back to the drawing board looking for some depth, heart and soul with which to complete our album. Curt came up with this simple folk/country riff, a little bit Dylan, a little bit Johnny Cash, and then we were off. It was the complete opposite of what we had been trying to do for many years – searching for the elusive, modern hit single. We felt suddenly unencumbered, free if you like, no longer worrying about the market, about success, but drawing on influences from our childhoods. It was at this point that the whole album started opening up. ‘No Small Thing’ was the key, the thing that turned a red light green,” - Roland Orzabal

"No Small Thing" feels like it could have been a song from a seventies or sixties acoustic folk album with how the track starts. The fact that we felt confident enough to go from there to the end of the song to where it’s just absolute mayhem speaks to that sense of freedom, and that’s our comfort zone musically.” - Curt Smith

Today tune "No Small Thing", taken from the new album "The Tipping Point", enjoy!

Dee Gees - Shadow Dancing

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Shadow Dancing" is a disco song performed by English singer-songwriter Andy Gibb. The song was released in April 1978 as the lead single from his second studio album of the same name. The song reached number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Albhy Galuten (who also produced this song) arranged the song with Barry Gibb. While Andy Gibb would have three more Top 10 hits in the U.S., this would be his final chart-topping hit in the United States. The song became a platinum record.

The song was written by Andy and his brothers (Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb) in Los Angeles, while the trio of brothers were working on the film "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". "And one night," Andy would recall, "while we were relaxing, we sat down and we had to start getting tracks together for the album" (also titled "Shadow Dancing"). "So we literally sat down and in ten minutes, we had a group going, (singing) the chorus part. As it says underneath the song, we all wrote it, the four of us."

"Shadow Dancing" was included on the album "Hail Satin" released in 2021 by the DEE GEES (an alter ego of the FOO FIGHTERS). Lead vocals on this cover were sung by Taylor Hawkins. "Hail Satin", the vinyl debut of DEE GEES is out now at participating RSD independent record stores. The Album was recorded live at studio 606. Enjoy today's cover!

Sonic Youth - In & Out

SONIC YOUTH was an influential experimental rock band which formed in New York City, New York, United States in 1981 and are currently on an indefinite hiatus (until now? -Ed). The last lineup consisted of Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums) and Mark Ibold (bass).

In their early career, SONIC YOUTH was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, Sonic Youth was pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement.

SONIC YOUTH have expressed a wide variety of influences, ranging from the influential protopunk musician Patti Smith to composer John Cage. The band has been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do", using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings, and preparing guitars with objects like drumsticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre.

In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, SONIC YOUTH sold official face masks based on the artwork from the album "Sonic Nurse", with proceeds going to charities Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, Bed Stuy Strong, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's COVID-19 Relief Fund. The same year, an extensive archive of live recordings from throughout the band's history was released on Bandcamp.

"In/Out/In" reveals their last decade to be still heavy on the roll-tape and bug-out SONIC YOUTH. Not all recorded in one session but rather spread out over 2000-2010, the sequencing here is especially well thought out.

Today's tune “In & Out”, taken from the latest rarities album "In/Out/In", quietly resembles Can in a cave with dripping stalactites of Kim’s wordless tone rumble and was recorded at a soundcheck in Pomona California and their home Hoboken turf in 2010. In January 2022, a new single: "In & Out" was released ahead of the March release of the rarities album "In/Out/In". Enjoy!

Dark Funeral - We Are The Apocalypse

Monday, time for present "Record Of The Week"

"We Are The Apocalypse" is the seventh full-length studio album by the Swedish Black Metal’s most genuine and unvarnished, pioneers DARK FUNERAL, the band continues to reach for new heights to bring audiences into its otherworldly & unholy visions. The new record, which was written almost entirely during the Coronavirus pandemic, sees the Satanic vanguards deliver their most aggressive and expansive songs to date. Guided by the fortitude and musical ambition of lead guitarist, songwriter & founding member Lord Ahriman, the new album promises a satisfying number of ‘firsts’ for the band, while still pushing to improve upon the aural marriage of sinister atmosphere and technical ferocity that distinguishes DARK FUNERAL amongst their peers.

The album marks the band’s first record with bassist Frederik Isaksson (Adra-Melek) and drummer Janne Jaloma (Jalomaah), the latter of whom has some colossal shoes to fill after the departure of Nils Fjellström (Dominator). Adra-Melek & Jalomaah have been in the band since 2018, are more than up to the task and they do a great job on "We Are The Apocalypse", an album that follows the same path that was made on the previous album "Where Shadows Forever Reign", but here with some few changes, like the drumming is a bit different, but fall in great to music and gives that wall of thunder that is needed for the band to work. The riffs are a bit different and the harmonies, not any big changes but overall the update works great in my ears.

The album kicks off in furious eruption with "Nightfall", where the classic DARK FUNERAL sound is intact, frosty and brutal, marvelous guitars, great drumming and bass lines, and Heljarmadr’s rasping growls have a great bite over it. "Let The Devil In" is a creepy piece but has some brilliant harmonies that kick you in the face and stand out as one of the top tunes on this album. A great and notably thing is that in "When I’m Gone" they dare to slow things down a bit and gives the listener some time to take a breath, the tune itself is a true beauty, the brutality is high, the vocals are scary and venomous heartbreaking, like a horror movie. To be honest, this is a brilliant effort that I hope they continue within the next chapter. Not to be a couch potato, but it's offered a lot of hellfire and blast beats like the thrashing tunes "A Beast To Praise", "Beyond The Grave", and the title tune "We Are The Apocalypse". "Leviathan" is another piece that lurks with a softer side, but only partly before the band throws itself into the pit of vicious brutality where the old school black metal influences sweep over the track. The legendary Swedish producer Daniel Bergstrand really squeezing out the best of everyone involved and pushes out their delicious evilness that gives us forty-five minutes of feral aggression and brutality that is higher than ever. This is the strongest album in the book of DARK FUNERAL, get it!

DARK FUNERAL is:
Lord Ahriman – Guitars
Heljarmadr – Vocals
Chaq Mol – Guitars
Jalomaah – Drums
Adra Melek – Bass

Today's tune "Leviathan", taken from "We Are The Apocalypse", enjoy!

Jan Garbarek - Hasta Siempre

Sunday, time for a classic and a cover.

"Hasta Siempre, Comandante," ("Until Forever, Commander" in English) or simply "Hasta Siempre," is a 1965 song by Cuban composer Carlos Puebla. The song's lyrics are a reply to revolutionary Che Guevara's farewell letter when he left Cuba, in order to foster revolution in the Congo and later Bolivia, where he was captured and killed.

The lyrics recount key moments of the Cuban Revolution, describing Che Guevara and his role as a revolutionary commander. The song became iconic after Guevara's death, and many left-leaning artists did their own cover versions of the song afterwards. The title is a part of Guevara's well known saying "¡Hasta la victoria siempre!" ("Until victory, always!").

Like many of the songs of the author and in line with the tradition of the Cuban and Caribbean music, the song consists of a refrain plus a series of five verses (quatrain), rhyming ABBA, with each line written in octosyllabic verse.

The song has been covered numerous times, there are more than 200 versions of this song. The song has also been covered by Compay Segundo, Soledad Bravo, Óscar Chávez, Nathalie Cardone, Robert Wyatt, Nomadi, Inés Rivero, Silvio Rodríguez, Ángel Parra, Celso Piña, Veronica Rapella (whose performance is attributed to Joan Baez by a common mistake), Rolando Alarcón, Los Olimareños, Maria Farantouri, Jan Garbarek, Wolf Biermann, Boikot, Los Calchakis (commonly wrongly attributed to Buena Vista Social Club), George Dalaras, Apurimac, Giovanni Mirabassi and Al Di Meola, Ahmet Koç, Mohsen Namjoo, Enrique Bunbury, Verasy, Interitus Dei among others. Although Victor Jara never sang this song, many attribute the Carlos Puebla version to him by mistake.

So for today we have the Norwegian jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek's version, along with Rainer Bruninhaus (piano), Eberhard Weber (basse), Marilyn Mazur (percussions), the tune was released on his "Witchi-Tai-To" from 1974. The clip is from Nancy Jazz Pulsations 2004, enjoy!

Morgan Wade - Wilder Days

Morgan Wade didn’t write to be a sensation, for critical acclaim or massive concert tours. She wrote to speak her truth, to save her own life – and perhaps throw a rope to others struggling with the weight of a world moving too fast, loves where you fall too hard and nights that, good or bad, seem to go on forever.

2021 saw "Reckless", her Thirty Tigers/now Sony Music Nashville debut, and lead single “Wilder Days”, (see and listen to it below), topping critical lists from Rolling Stone, TIME, Stereogum, New York Times, Boston Globe, FADER, Tennessean, Whiskey Riff, Billboard, and The Boot and Taste of Country who both proclaimed, “a once-in-a-decade debut.” With a voice that is raw hurt, deep knowing and somehow innocence retained, Wade wrote or co-wrote a song cycle about the reality facing teens and 20-somethings that embraced raw desire, the reality of getting high and getting sober, the realm of crawling through the wreckage with a tough vulnerability that is as singular as the young woman from Floyd, Virginia.

Today's tune "Wilder Days", taken from her debut album "Reckless", enjoy!

Monophonics - Warpaint

Bay Area-based MONOPHONICS announced their upcoming full-length "Sage Motel", out May 13th via Colemine Records. The psychedelic soul band, MONOPHONICS, cordially invites you to attend the grand re-opening of the once thriving, once vibrant establishment, the legendary "Sage Motel". A place where folks experience the highs and lows of human existence. A place where big dreams and broken hearts live, where people arrive without ever knowing how they got there. It’s where individuals find themselves at a crossroads in life.

The album announcement comes with a video for the first single “Warpaint,” which is directed by Kassy Mahea, see it below.

"Sage Motel" is the MONOPHONICS fifth studio album since 2012. Once again the album is produced by bandleader Kelly Finnigan. “Warpaint”, the leading single from "Sage Motel", reveals the vices of each resident and confronts the struggles of substance abuse and addiction. Their warpaint becomes compulsory to face the day, tolerate the struggle, get through the hardest parts of the world, humanity, life and to fight the good fight. Cloaked in heavy riffs and robust vocals, “Warpaint” gives you the first look through the doors of the Sage Motel.

What started as a quaint motor lodge and a common pitstop for travelers and truckers in the 1940s morphed into a bohemian’s hang by the 1960s and 1970s. Artists, musicians, and vagabonds of all types would stop there as seedy ownership pumped obnoxious amounts of money into high end renovations, eventually attracting some of the most prominent acts of the era. But when the money ran out, The Sage Motel devolved into a place where you rent by the hour.

If these walls of the "Sage Motel" could talk, this is what they'd say. So join us as we examine where the stories are told and experiences unfold.....and sink into a soft pillow of soulful psychedelia.....down at the Sage Motel. (visit Sage Motel here!)

Today's tune "Warpaint", taken from the bands upcoming fifth studio album "Sage Motel". Enjoy!

Tori Amos - Thank You

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Thank You" is a song by the English rock band LED ZEPPELIN from their second studio album "Led Zeppelin II" (1969). It was written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and produced by Page.

In a retrospective review of "Led Zeppelin II" (Deluxe Edition) (2014), Michael Madden of Consequence of Sound praised the remastering of "Thank You", believing the track now sounds "mellow and well-balanced". Madden further praised the remastering, writing the track "breathes easy during the verses and ascends elsewhere in the song", along with "illuminating Page's touch and Bonham's haymakers". When reviewing the added bonus tracks of the Deluxe Edition, Madden further praised the new version of "Thank You", titled "Thank You (Backing Track)", writing the track "magnifies the song's tasteful sheen, popping with Bonham’s drums and Jones' organ, which seems to have a mind of its own.

The American singer-songwriter and musician Tori Amos record a great piano cover on this tune, released on the UK EP "Crucify". It was released as the fifth single from her debut studio album "Little Earthquakes", on May 12, 1992, by Atlantic Records in North America and on June 8 by EastWest Records in the UK.

The tune was also released as a live clip on her "Live at Montreux 1991/1992", a live album and DVD set, released on September 22, 2008 in the United Kingdom and on September 30, 2008 in the United States, featuring two separate performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival early in her career. The first 10-song set was recorded on July 3, 1991 with the second 9-song set recorded one year later on July 7, 1992. The bulk of the set list for each show was taken from Amos' solo debut album "Little Earthquakes". Enjoy today's tune!

The Bridge City Sinners - Devil Like You

From the misty, pine-covered hills of the Pacific Northwest hail THE BRIDGE CITY SINNERS, who span the continuum from prohibition era jazz to Appalachian death folk. This traditional string band line up bends the meaning of the word genre, playing festivals from Punk Rock Bowling, to Muddy Roots, to Oregon’s Bluegrass String Summit. They started their journey by busking on sidewalks across the country and now this supergroup of musicians find themselves on the national tour circuit. The Sinners still hold true to the DIY mentality of putting albums out on a self made record label, Flail Records. With talented musicianship and a punk as f***! live show, this is one band you don’t want to miss.

THE BRIDGE CITY SINNERS did release their new album "Unholy Hymns" last summer, so what better time to give them a good grilling on their new record?! AND we got Amigo the Devil to dish out the questions, because why the Hell not!

Today's tune "Devil Like You" is taken from "Unholy Hymns", enjoy!
