Night - High Tides - Distant Skies

Monday, new week, time for "Record Of The Week".

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is the fourth album from the Swedish heavy metal/hard rock band NIGHT, set for release on The Sign Records, 11th of September. The album contains nine new tracks of classic sounding rock music. "High Tide - Distant Skies" follow the band´s critically acclaimed album "Raft Of The World". If their last album was darker and had a strong proto-metal niche, the new album has much wider influences and a More is More approach. The album is built upon rhythm and melodies, and Oskar Andersson now shares the position as lead vocalist with Sammy Ouirra.

NIGHT has once again taken the help from producer Ola Ersfjord (PRIMORDIAL, TRIBULATION, HONEYMOON DISEASE, ISE). The band has stepped outside their comfort zone, something that becomes possible after taking their time both with songwriting and having a long term collaboration with their producer. NIGHT has since their last album enlisted drummer Linus Fritzson (AMBUSH). The band has spent a long time concentrating on songwriting, building trust and being able to steep outside of the box. There are more vocal arrangements, but also larger arrangements on the songs and even strings.

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is a relatively satisfying affair with thirty-seven minutes, nine excellent tunes with fine spread across the borders in the sub-genres of rock, 70's rock to heavy metal to pop psychedelia to southern rock, a great and wide pallet of rock. The album have a great quality in the production and sounds terrific, great drumming with some impressive drum solos, the guitars sounds very crisp and well slided, the bass licks follows its owner faithfully and the vocals is a bit monotonous, still very powerful and have a great flow and takes a firm grip on the tunes like a principal does over his students.

All the tunes is very catchy and have a upbeat vibe regardless of its territory. Tunes like the opening tune "Shadow Gold" that have a more melodic metal vibe, same goes with "Burning Sky". The more popish rockers "Crimson Past" reminds me of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT with Mark Knopler on guitar :) The midtempo rocker "Falling In The Black" is one of the highlights where bands like SCORPIONS comes in mind when the dual guitars take it's place. The galloping "Here In My Own" is another great cut on the album. The album ends with two great tunes of "Give Me To The Night" and "Under The Moonlight Sky" where both goes in the hard driving heavy rock way, quick and fast vocals, heavy riffage. The last tune have a very catchy chorus and a little ABBA feeling over it.

"High Tides - Distant Skies" is an excellent release by NIGHT, it's catchy and very fun and easy to listen to. The tunes are well executed and have a high standard, stunning performances by all musicians. It's a record that I highly recomend to get.

Sum: It's September and the NIGHT is back!
