Marilyn Manson - God's Gonna Cut You Down

"God's Gonna Cut You Down", is a traditional folk song which has been recorded by numerous artists representing a variety of genres. The lyrics are a warning to sinners that no matter how hard they try, they will not avoid God's judgment.

The silhouette of Marilyn Manson skulks around crucifixes at the onset of a video for his new recording of the folk standard, “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” which was previously recorded by Odetta, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, among others.

Marilyn Manson recorded and released his cover of the song in October of 2019 (previously performed on his "Heaven Upside Down" tour in 2017).

Music video director Tim Mattia (Halsey’s “Colors,” the 1975’s “Somebody Else,” Manson’s “Hey Cruel World … “) shot Manson for the video in the Joshua Tree Desert in California.

The singer is putting the song out as a standalone vinyl single (and digital release) to coincide with his October and November tour dates. The vinyl picture disc features one of his watercolor paintings. Order it here!

Konvent - Puritan Masochism

Could Copenhagen become the new death doom capital? If so, it`s all because of KONVENT!

Founded in 2015, the fourpiece stoically trudges through the blackest mires – following in the footsteps of CANDLEMASS, PARADISE LOST and BLACK BREATH, who all unleashed the bleakest horror on mankind in the early 90s. Rikke Emilie List`s guttural vocals and tenacious riffing combined with menacingly heavy production make the debut by these four Danish women a massive extreme metal highlight of early 2020 – and it wouldn`t come as a surprise if "Puritan Masochism" conjures up a deserved revival for the whole death doom genre.

Chernaa - Ominous

Czech post-black metal band CHERNAA did release their debut album titled "Empyrean Fire" on June 7th via Noizr Productions.

The album is a result of a joint effort of musicians divided geographically but not mentally. CHERNAA symbolizes the feeling that life is meaningless and that we are utterly insignificant when compared to the size of the universe. Like the beauty of gazing vacantly into the black void and being detached from all other worries in life. As soon as the melancholy becomes the basic disposition of man, it reflects a world that has lost its firm order and human life is at the very edge of an incurable disease. And it is this transient awareness of the nothingness that triggers emotional responses that are too mysterious and profound and which we are trying to capture with our music.

The band comments on the song, "The music is taken from higher planes of consciousness. Raw emotions played through saddened guitar riffs and wistful melodic combinations drag the listener through the forest of thoughts. It was created to enjoy those beautiful and painful melancholic desolations around us.”

CHERNAA is a post-metal/post-black act from Prague, Czech Republic. The band has an international lineup, including musicians from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Russia. The recording of the album "Empyrean Fire" took place at the Jaro Sound studio in Prague. The artwork for the release was created by Anna Levytska, known for her work with BLUT AUS NORD.

"Three guys from the Czech Republic and a guy from Ukraine currently living in Prague, creating the instrumental base for the band, while the vocalist is from Russia, Krasnoyarsk, recording vocals from afar. We bring the post into your black. We dive into the void and bring the existential dread."

CHERNAA is:
Utsuro the Sabbatic
Solipsist the Undying
Nexus the Wilder
Nihilist the Priceless
Hedonist the Poisoned

Today's tune "Ominous" is taken from "Empyrean Fire", enjoy!

Alcest - Spiritual Instinct

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Spiritual Instinct" is the sixth full-length release for the French blackgaze duo of Neige and Winterhalter in ALCEST. Once again these lads have given us a breathtaking piece of music - a gateway to the otherworldly.

"Spiritual Instinct" is an atmospheric journey through light and darkness, exploring to find the Spiritual Instinct. The album was written in bursts both during and after a prolonged period of touring in support of 2016’s hugely successful "Kodama". "Spiritual Instinct" follows the same path as their precursor, a record full of spontaneity and greatness.

The album opens up with the breath-taking pace of "Les Jardin De Minuit", a real beauty with excellent vocals and guitar playing so the saliva starts to drip until it rolls over to the first single and the melancholy piece "Protection". This continues with a slow methodical pounding in "Sapphire" where Winterhalter shows his skills in drumming. The darkens fall over us in the dramatic and epic number "L’Île Des Morts" and the emotional piece "Le Miroir" where all the emotions will bubble in your body. The album closes up with the title tune "Spiritual Instinct" where the lights and darkness finally find it's meaning or does it?

The band has undoubtedly crafted one hell of an album. It's a massive piece that will take a few spins to get a grip on, but one you do, you will discover its hole beauty. "Spiritual Instinct" was released by Nuclear Blast on October 25th, the album was produced by Benoît Roux.

Musicians:
Stéphane “Neige” Paut / Lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass
Jean “Winterhalter” Deflandre / Drums, percussion

Sum: The blackgaze pioneers ALCEST have once again created a stunning masterpiece, you need this!

Today's tune "Sapphire" is taken from "Spiritual Instinct", enjoy!

To celebrate their release of "Spiritual Instinct", they made a video "La Lumière Autant Que L'ombre", the making of the album, filmed by William Lacalmontie. William spent a lot of time with Benoît Roux and ALCEST at Drudenhaus Studio in order to capture their moods, as well as glimpses of the long journey that was this recording process. "Protection (Acoustic Instrumental Version)“ is played in the background.

Omen - The Axeman

Sunday, time for a classic.

"The Axeman" was a tune taken from the debut album "Battle Cry" of the American heavy metal band OMEN. It was originally released in 1984 by Metal Blade. In 2005 Metal Blade re-released Battle Cry on Picture LP format, limited to 500 copies and including two bonus tracks.

The band was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983, by lead guitarist Kenny Powell, previously with the band SAVAGE GRACE and signed on with Metal Blade in 1984, with whom they released their debut "Battle Cry" (which contained "The Axeman", which appeared on the soundtrack for the Heavy Metal themed 2009 video game Brütal Legend).

In 1985 the second album "Warning Of Danger" followed, which could easily compare with their debut, and built up OMENs reputation as one of the forefathers of power metal acts.

In 1986 they released "The Curse", their first release with major label distribution by Capitol Records in the US. In Japan the band climbed to Number 14 in the Burrn! Charts.

With new singer Coburn Pharr (who would later leave to join ANNIHILATOR) the band released "Escape To Nowhere" in 1988; although considered a departure from the classic OMEN sound, "Thorn in Your Flesh" was their first hit single in the US.

In 1996, they signed with new label Massacre Records, and toured Europe with FATES WARNING for the first time. In October 2003, their former singer, J.D. Kimball, died having succumbed to cancer after three years of treatment.

Currently, OMEN has released seven studio albums worldwide, and a 20th anniversary box set. Promised release "Hammer Damage" has been delayed for more than 8 years and was released in 2016 via DSN Music.

OMEN Consists of:
J.D. Kimball - vocals
Joe Jaimes - guitars
Kenny Powell - guitars
Steve Wittig - drums
Jody Henry - bass

Enjoy today's tune. OMEN, Live at the Country Club, Los Angeles, 1st September 1984.

Elden - Sail & Savour

The Swedish rockers ELDEN is a new discovery in the noise buzz of new music. Excuse - Sworn To The Crimson Oath

A dark basement with lit candles and flying V what more could you ask for a Friday like this.

One of Finland's hottest newcomers, EXCUSE began to make a name for themselves with the second EP, "Goddess Injustice". Release to critical acclaim in 2016 by Shadow Kingdom Records, "Goddess Injustice" largely introduced the fierce foursome to the international metal underground - with a nuclear-powered bang! A finely honed missile of speed metal majesty, EXCUSE's sound on that EP in many ways recalled the classic Canadian god's SACRIFICE and RAZOR, but there were hints of greater glories to come. And at last, they've arrived with the presciently titled "Prophets From The Occultic Cosmos". Released on August 2, 2019. Recorded at Black Floyd Analog Studio in August 2017. Mastered (Analog and Digital) at Timmion Cutting Lab in December 2017 - January 2018.

With the new album EXCUSE, who have been able to transform their earlier youthful energy into enviably advanced maturity with "Prophets From The Occultic Cosmos". Behold these Prophets' coming!

Oskar Lindström - Lead Vocals & Guitars
Atte Aaltonen - Bass & Backing Vocals
Anselmi Ahopalo - Lead Guitar & Synths
Tatu Lybeck - Drums & Percussions

Wolf Jaw - Hear Me

The Cannock blues-rock trio WOLF JAW (formally THE BAD FLOWERS) are thrilled to announce that they have signed a record deal with Listenable Records. Under their new label, WOLF JAW will release their second album "The Heart Won't Listen" on the 25th of this month to follow-up to their critically-acclaimed 2018 debut album "Starting Gun".

WOLF JAW formed from the depths of the Black Country in 2014 comprised of lead vocalist and guitarist, Tom Leighton, whose signature riffs, fuzz emotive guitar, and pure vocals have a distinctive sound unlike anybody else. Bassist Dale Tonks provides a deep heavy groove and tasty bass runs that underpins Karl Selickis' chest pumping drums and impeccable rhythmic feel.

The combination of these three formidable players makes WOLF JAW a force to be reckoned with, forging a sound steeped in the raw, passionate energy of the Black country's 70's heroes, but, at the same time, keeping the vibe very much in tune with the 21st-century rock sensibilities.

Nightstalker - Great Hallucinations

New week... time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

This week we put our attention to the land of Apollo and Olive Oil, here we find the Greece rockers NIGHTSTALKER. They have been around for two decades already. "Great Hallucinations" is the eight album release from these guys. This is an album that is rooted in old school hard rock with great tunes, cool lyrics with a bluesy, distorted, catchy and melodic sound that make it a loveful listening hour. In other words, everything that is needed to make a great album that hits your soul. Eight tunes split over 42 mins, makes the average length of the tunes perfectly reasonable.

"Great Hallucinations" is a groovy, catchy piece with a great variation in the tunes to keep the interest up and rolling all the way to the finish line. It's a well-crafted album with good production and sound, clear separation of all the instruments and vocals in the mix. Great power in Argy's voice, heavy and fuzzy guitar from Tolis, spacey and groovy bass licks from Andreas bass and finally a great swing in Dino's arms when he hits the drums.

The album opens up with the energic and upbeat rocker "Black Cloud", catchy lyrics surrounded by a heavy melodic guitar riffing that makes it almost impossible to sit still. This followed by the half paced rocker and first single "Sweet Knife", heavy chorus, upbuilding tempo in the end where they almost go bananas without losing focus. The album continues delivering excellent tunes, take the big rhythms in the tune "Sad Side Of The City", or the heavy fuzzy riffing in the melodic pieces "Seven Out Of Ten" and "Half Crazy", or the bluesy and groovy tune "Cursed" and the beautiful "Hole In The Mirror", heavy, melodic and just marvelous. The album closes with a trippy ending in "Great Hallucinations". This is a solid album release from NIGHSTALKER, absolutely worth checking up!

Sum: "Great Hallucinations" is an evening bath with Olive Oil without mushrooms.

NIGHTSTALKER consists:
Argy (Vocals),
Andreas Lagios (Bass),
Tolis Motsios (Guitar),
Dinos Roulos (Drums).

Today's tune "Sweet Knife" is taken from "Great Hallucinations", enjoy!

Death In June - All Pigs Must Die

Sunday, time for a classic.

DEATH IN JUNE are a neofolk group led by English folk musician Douglas Pearce, better known as Douglas P. The band was originally formed in Britain in 1981 as a trio, but after the other members left in 1984 and 1985 to work on other projects, the group became the work of Douglas P. and various collaborators. Douglas P. now lives in Australia.

Over the band's three decades of existence, they have made numerous shifts in style and presentation, resulting in an overall shift from initial post-punk and Industrial Records influence to a more acoustic and folk music-oriented approach. Douglas P.'s influence was instrumental in sparking neofolk, of which his music has subsequently become a part.

"All Pigs Must Die" is an album by DEATH IN JUNE, released in 2001. The first half of the album bears the typical later DEATH IN JUNE neofolk sound, whereas the second half of the album has a much more chaotic, experimental sound to it. On the album Pearce was assisted by Andreas Ritter of the neofolk group FORSETI who played accordion on a few tracks on the first half of the LP. This marked a return to the previous folk sound of DEATH IN JUNE.
DEATH IN JUNE have also appeared live with FORSETI and Pearce appeared on Forseti's Windzeit LP.

Enjoy today's tune!

Nyt Liv - Hårde Tider

Continue from yesterdays 10th Years Celebration of the festival "Copenhell".

The second tune is "Hårde Tider" (Hard Times) that was written by NYT LIV (New Life) bassist Søren Hvidt, which is also played by NYT LIV with the help of musicians from RISING and HATESPHERE. Søren Hvidt says the following about the song: "We were given some framework for the project, and we have not tried that before. Among other things, there should be room for a guitar chase, a solo and some recognizability. Our songwriting is usually very dynamic and focuses on how we make room for the various instruments. After all, we are not a decidedly guitar solo band, so how should we find space for them? There should also be a chorus so that our musical concept was stretched a great deal. It is also one of the longest numbers we have ever been involved in making", says Hvidt.

Ti År I Helvede ep was released digitally on Friday, April 5 and on vinyl on April 19, 2019. The vinyl edition is severely limited and is available in 333 neon green and 333 black copies respectively - a total of 666 copies. And yes, the publishers, the record label Indisciplinarian, insist on calling it an ep, even though it only contains two songs, but that is to emphasize that these are two equal songs.

This years festival was takes place on days 19-22. June with major names like TOOL; SLIPKNOT and SCORPIONS.

NYT LIV:
Michael Benborg Aagesen: Vocals
Martin Goltermann: Guitar & background vocals
Søren Hvidt: Bass
Simon Erlendsson: Drums & & background vocals

Guests: Morten Grønnegaard (RISING): Vocals & background vocals
Anders Bo Rasmussen (RISING): Lead guitar (solo 1)
Jacob Krogholt (RISING): Lead guitar (solo 2) & background vocals

Omvendt Korstog - Ulvens Ed

Did you know that this year, was the 10th anniversary for the Copenhell festival. Shit what times flys, remmeber the first years, been there and all I can say it's a cozy rock festival, just enough peoples that visist it and a good bunch of bands that plays there every year.

Anyway, I bumped into an EP with that celebrates its 10th anniversary, been in the flow of music for a some time, never really got to play it. But now I did, found out that a number of Danish rock and metal musicians have teamed up to make a tribute ep for the festival. It has become the all-star band Reverse Crusade and the ep Ten Years in Hell with the two songs "Ulvens Ed" (Wolf's Oath) and "Hårde tider" (Hard Times), which pay tribute to the festival's dedicated audience. Two songs on two day, why not, so tomorrow we play "Hårde tider" with NYT LIV

The music for "Ulvens Ed" (The Wolf’s Oath) is written by the two Danish rock veterans Tim Christensen (DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY) and Jacob "Cobber" Binzer (D-A-D), who play guitar and bass respectively on the song, with Casper Popp (BERSÆRK on vocals, Allan Tschicaja (PRETTY MAIDS) on drums and Niklas Sonne (DEFECTO) on lead guitar. Together they call themselves OMVENDT KORSTOG (Reverse Crusade). Lars Evers (BERSÆRK) has written the lyrics.

"Ulvens Ed" is both a musical and a lyrical attempt in capturing the spirit of COPENHELL. It is a special feeling of togetherness and sympathy for each other mixed with some beer and adventure. It is a very special world. After all, it is the most peaceful festival everl, so the song is in some way a singalong or love letter to COPENHELL about the fellowship that people experience at both the festival and in the whole environment. It is a battle cry for a peaceful community”, tells Jacob Binzer (D-A-D).

Copenhel festival was on June 19-22 2019, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Vocals: Casper Popp
Guitar: Tim Christensen
Bass: Jacob “Cobber” Binzer
Drums: Allan Tschicaja
Lead Guitar: Nicklas Sonne

"Ulvens Ed" was Recorded at Hansen Studios, Ribe, January 2019. Production, mix & mastering: Jacob Hansen. Lead guitar recorded at Sonne Studios. Executive producer: Toke Holt.

Enjoy today's tune taken from the EP "Ti År I Helvede".

Charm City Devils - Man Of Constant Sorrow

Thursday, time to play a Cover of a traditional tune.

"Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") is a traditional American folk song first published by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913. An early version was recorded by Emry Arthur in 1928, which gave the song its current titles.

There exist a number of versions of the song that differ in their lyrics and melodies. The song was popularized by THE STANLEY BROTHERS, who recorded the song in the 1950s, and many other singers recorded versions in the 1960s, most notably by BOB DYLAN. Variations of the song have also been recorded under the titles of "Girl Of Constant Sorrow" by JOAN BAEZ, "Maid Of Constant Sorrow" by JUDY COLLINS, and "Sorrow" by PETER, PAUL and MARY. In 1970 the song was recorded by GINGER BAKERS AIR FORCE, with vocals by Denny Laine, and reached No. 85 on the Billboard Chart.

Public interest in the song was renewed after the release of the 2000 film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", where it plays a central role in the plot, earning the three runaway protagonists public recognition as the SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS. The song, with lead vocal by Dan Tyminski, was also included in the film's highly successful, multiple-platinum-selling soundtrack. This recording won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in 2002.

Today's version of "Man Of Constant Sorrow" is made by the Baltimore, Maryland hard rock band THE CHARM CITY DEVILS. The band was founded by singer/songwriter and former CHILDs PLAY and SR-71 drummer John Allen and includes bassist Anthony Arambula, drummer Jason Heiser, and guitarists Victor Karrera and Nick Kay (also of CHILDs PLAY). The band was first signed to Eleven Seven Music in 2009. After signing with Eleven Seven Music, MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist and Eleven Seven Music chairman, Nikki Sixx, suggested the band's current name CHARM CITY DEVILS.

On January 25, 2012 CHARM CITY DEVILS released the single, a cover of "Man Of Constant Sorrow," from their album release "Sins" on new label Fat Lady Music.

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

This week we turn our heads to vast Russian province Siberia where we find the third full-length album "Will Of The Primordial" with the atmospheric black metal duo GRIMA. A band that was formed in 2014 as a project to create music, they have only performed in the studio but hopefully, after this release, they will seek out and perform for us deadly human beings.

The album contains eight icy tunes, that have a terrain spanning tundra, coniferous forest and mountain ranges with gloomy atmosphere, the world’s deepest lake, circled by a network of hiking paths gives us the beauty of this Siberian duo. Pagan influences metal where the mythology is based on the worship of the elder forest, its power, and magic, where the GRIMA is a supreme god. It is a powerful spirit, who protects only those who live in a forest, and punishes everyone who does not respect nature.

Great songwriting and instrumentation that have a good variation to keep my ears busy and interested true the whole trip of 47 mins. The lyrics illustrate the harsh and cold nature of the Russian province of Siberia. Rasping and screamy vocals, melodic and tremolo-picked melodies and great variation of instruments in a classic black metal style that is well executed by the twin brothers Morbius and Wilhelm. It's a powerful album where the could be comparable with WINTERFYLLETH.

The album opens up with a pagan intro in "Siberian Sorrow", the accordion softly lays its musical layer until the guitars sneak in from the behind and the drums join the force and suddenly it burst out. A perfect ground has been made for the second tune "The Shrouded In Darkness" to play its ball. "Leshiy" is an emotional tune with beautiful passages and bestial aggression followed by "Spiritual Emptiness", the first of two instrumental pieces on the album. The peaceful tune "Enisey" with the ambient keyboard in the background that frames this tune with a golden light. Excellent vocal screams in "Blizzard". "Howl at Night" is a true masterpiece, clocking in just over nine minutes, beautiful instrumental parts that are woven in a tasteful way, the instrumental choice suits the tune like a glove. The album closes up with the second and last instrumental piece "Rest In The Snow", a beauty with horns. An excellent album and a definite recommendation for fans of atmospheric black metal, check this up. The album was mixed and mastered by Vladimir Lekhtinen. Released August 3, 2019 on Naturmacht Productions.

Sum: A must-have album.

Sleep - Holy Mountain

Sunday, time for a classic.

Yesterday the Swedish capital Stockholm once again got the privilege to get a visit by the American doom metal power trio SLEEP from San Jose, California.

I think this was the third time I have witnessed these guys live and they surely can deliver a heavy and loud trip into the stoner world. This time they played at Münchenbryggeriet here in Stockholm. Monotone rock, loud as hell and slow lightning that framed this up in a perfect way and I can say that I was happy when I drew home after the show.

Setlist from the show:

Intro (Moon Landing Radio Transmission)
Marijuanaut's Theme
Holy Mountain
The Clarity
Sonic Titan
Giza Butler
Leagues Beneath
The Botanist
Dragonaut

Today's tune "Holy Mountain" is taken from the second studio album "Sleep's Holy Mountain" (also known as Holy Mountain). It was released in November 1992 in Europe, and March 1993 in the USA through Earache Records.

The recordings that would become "Sleep's Holy Mountain" were originally sent to independent label Earache as a demo. The label immediately signed the band and released the recordings exactly as they were received. It was the last album to be released by the band as a fully functioning group for a while, as their subsequent albums up to 2018's "The Sciences" were released after the group had broken up.

The album, which includes the word "stoner" in the lyrics of two songs and prominently features cannabis leaves in its album art, is widely considered one of the seminal albums in the evolution of stoner rock. It became a favorite of the heavy metal press and the band was heralded, along with Kyuss, as leaders of the emerging stoner metal scene.

Enjoy!
