Cymande - Brothers On The Slide

Friday, another sunny day!

CYMANDE is a British funk group that was originally active in the early 1970s. The band name derives from a calypso word for "Dove", which symbolises peace and love; "Dove" is also the title of one of their best-known song. With a membership deriving from several Caribbean nations, Cymande were noted for an eclectic mix of funk, soul, reggae, rock, African music, calypso, and jazz that they called "nyah-rock". The band formed in 1971 and released three albums before disbanding in 1974. After gaining newfound popularity when their music was sampled by many notable rap artists, Cymande reformed in the 2010s.

Today's tune "Brothers On The Slide" is taken from he bands third album "Promised Heights", released 1974. The clip is when Cymande playing a live session at KCRW radio station in Santa Monica, LA in 2016, enjoy!

Black Mountain - Junior's Eyes

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Junior's Eyes" is a tune made by the English rock band BLACK SABBBTH, taken from the eighth studio album "Never Say Die!", released in September 1978. It was the last studio album with the band's original lineup and the last studio album to feature original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne until the 2013 album "13". It was certified Gold in the U.S on 7 November 1997 and as of November 2011 has sold 133,000 copies in the United States since the SoundScan era. The album received mixed reviews, with critics calling it "unbalanced" and insisting its energy was scattered in too many directions.

"Junior's Eyes" was dedicated to Ozzy Osbourne's father, who died in 1977 while they were making "Never Say Die!" Ozzy was booted from the band the following year and launched a successful solo career. He returned to the band from time to time, including for Live Aid in 1985.

"Junior's Eyes" was covred by the Canadian psychedelic rock band BLACK MOUNTAIN and the band have blessed the world with two unreleased songs, “Junior’s Eyes” and “Future Shade (Demo)” on thier latest single release on March 10th on Jagjaguwar.

Stephen McBean says of the cover of "Junior’s Eyes": “Deep end period Ozzy slow burn. Some Butler / Ward funk, Iommi wah flutters and floating synths … randomly rediscovered on a cruise through some red sand tropics. Nearly ten years on and still pulling riffs from the sky…. never say die! You’re never too old to switch on and upwards!”

The rock canon has many anti-heroes, BLACK MOUNTAIN being the latest. In the past, Can’s 'Tago Mago' established that the only rule in rock and roll is that there are no rules. Delinquent proto-metallers Black Sabbath demonstrated that you can make a lot from not that much. Now BLACK MOUNTAIN teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future.

Enjoy today's tune!

The First Edition - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)

Let's continue on the memory lane!

Today's tune "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is a psychedelic rock song written by Mickey Newbury and best known from a version by THE FIRST EDITION, recorded in 1967 and released to popular success in 1968. Said to reflect the LSD experience, the song was intended to be a warning about the dangers of using the drug, and came to be associated with the counterculture of the 1960s.

The song was first recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, backed by members of "The Memphis Boys", the chart-topping rhythm section at Chips Moman's American Sounds Studio in Memphis, on May 9, 1967. The song appeared on Lewis' album Soul My Way, released November 1, 1967. Before Lewis' record was issued, on October 10, 1967, it was recorded by Teddy Hill & the Southern Soul as a single on Rice Records (Rice 5028 b/w "Stagger Lee") and produced by Norro Wilson.

Kenny Rogers and THE FIRST EDITION, until 1969 billed as THE FIRST EDITION, were an American rock band that fused rock and roll, R&B, folk, and country. Its core members were Kenny Rogers (lead vocals and bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums and percussion) and Terry Williams (guitar and vocals). The band formed in 1967, with folk musician Mike Settle (guitar and backing vocals) and the operatically-trained Thelma Camacho (lead vocals) completing the lineup.

As the counterculture of the 1960s was developing, THE FIRST EDITION signed with Reprise Records in 1967 and had their first big hit in early 1968 with the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" (US No. 5). After only one more chart hit, "But You Know I Love You" (US No. 19), the group, newly billed as "Kenny Rogers and THE FIRST EDITION", once again hit the top ten, this time in 1969 with the topical "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" (US No. 6, UK No.2).

For the next six years, THE FIRST EDITION moved between country rock, pop and psychedelic rock, enjoying worldwide success. By the mid-1970s, frontman Kenny Rogers had embarked on a solo music career, becoming one of the top-selling country artists of all time.

Enjoy todays tune "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" where the video is from Kenny Rogers TV show Rollin' On The River and DVD Remember the 70's.

Black Merda - Cynthy-Ruth

BLACK MERDA is an American rock band from Detroit, active from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s and reuniting in 2005. BLACK MERDA has weathered decades of relative inactivity only to return stronger than ever in the 21st Century. Original members V.C. Veasey, Anthony Hawkins and Charles Hawkins were on tour as Edwin Starr's backup band in the mid-sixties when they had a chance encounter with the music of Jimi Hendrix. Shortly thereafter, they embarked on a course that led them to become the link between Hendrix and Funkadelic. In 1967, Black Merda recorded the first of two albums for Chess Records. For these Wasmopolitan sessions, they've reprised one of those early songs and today's tune "Cynthy-Ruth" a blues number that owes far more to Muddy than to Jimi.

"Cynthy-Ruth" is taken from "Black Merda" is the self-titled debut album by the Detroit rock band BLACK MERDA. It was released in 1970 by Chess Records. The original album was long out of print before being reissued on CD by TuffCity Records in 1996. All of the album’s tracks are also collected on the 2005 BLACK MERDA compilation "The Folks From Mother's Mixer".

Link Wray - Fire And Brimstone

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Fire And Brimstone" is a tune taken from the self-titled 1971 album by the pioneering guitarist Link Wray. The tune as far as musical style goes, is a freaking rootsy piece with some Spiritual feeling on it.

The music is an Americana blend of blues, country, gospel, and folk rock elements. This music is characterized by the purposeful use of simplified sounds to reflect the then-current vogue of blues and other roots music being used in many roots rock bands. Wray's guitar-work, composing, and vocals reflected modern rock influences. Despite publicity from radio stations and print media in the Washington, D.C. area, the album did not do well in national sales.

Some tracks from this album later surfaced on the compilation Guitar Preacher: The Polydor Years, and it was included in its entirety on 2CDs compilation Wray's Three Track Shack (Acadia/Evangeline Recorded Works Ltd./Universal Music, 2005) along with other "shack" recordings of '71 Beans and Fatback and Mordicai Jones. The album has proved influential in later decades, with THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, CALEXICO, Karl Blau, and Father John Misty, among others, recording covers of tracks from it.

Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr. (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005) was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s.

Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2013 and 2017 he was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock.

Tony Joe White - Bubba Jones

"Smoke From The Chimney" is an album by Tony Joe White. It's a posthumous new album and follows White’s previous album Bad Mouthin’, which was released just a few weeks before his October 24th, 2018, death.

"Smoke From The Chimney" was released via Easy Eye Sound on May 7th. It was produced by Dan Auerbach and was taken from White’s home demos and built out by Auerbach and his favorite session players.

“No one else could do it like TJ does…when is the last song you heard name check Red Man and Gatorade?” Auerbach says of the recording.

“My dad loved to fish. It was his favorite hobby,” White’s son Jody adds. “He would travel many miles to find the best fishing holes, or to explore places he heard about where large fish had been caught. Bubba Jones is a hybrid: a fictional character that Tony Joe made up in his head, combined with his inner self who had a burning desire to catch the world record largemouth bass.”

The accompanying video for “Bubba Jones” ties together some stunning footage of the swamps from White’s native Louisiana with long-lost footage of the artist performing on Nashville Now in the 1980s. See the video below.

Musicans on "Smoke From The Chimney"
Tony Joe White - Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar
Gene Chrisman - Drums
Sam Bacco - Drums, Percussion
Eric Deaton - Bass
Mike Rojas - Clavinet
Ray Jacildo - B3
Bobby Wood - Piano
Dan Auerbach - Electric Guitar, Percussion
Marcus King - Electric Guitar

Tony Joe White (July 23, 1943 – October 24, 2018), nicknamed the Swamp Fox, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie" and for "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but which was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970. He also wrote "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues", both hits for Tina Turner in 1989; those two songs came by way of Turner's producer at the time, Mark Knopfler, who was a friend of White. "Polk Salad Annie" was also recorded by Joe Dassin, Elvis Presley, and Tom Jones.

Today's tune “Bubba Jones”, taken from the new album "Smoke From The Chimney", the tune recalls some of White’s singular Sixties and Seventies recordings like “Polk Salad Annie” and features sizzling slide guitar from Marcus King.

"Sharecropper’s Son" is the career-defining new album from Robert Finley, “The greatest living soul singer” who in a bizarre twist, found overnight success after 67 years of hard work.

Following Finley’s semi-finalist appearance on America’s Got Talent, he returned to the studio to follow-up his critically acclaimed record, "Goin' Platinum!" The resulting Dan Auerbach produced album is a soulful masterpiece, rooted in the vintage sounds of southern harmony, rhythm and blues. Recorded at Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville with legendary music studio veterans, Finley’s formidable vocals and lyrical stylings take center stage, sharing personal stories inspired by his Louisiana country childhood during the Jim Crow era south. His tales of pain and joy uplift as Finley reflects on his belief that you are never too young to dream and never too old to live.

Horisont - Sheldon Churchyard

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Sheldon Churchyard" is a song by Larry Jon Wilson from the 1976 album "Let Me Sing My Song To You". The tune is a groovy and a funky piece with some country vocals! Larry Jon Wilson (October 7, 1940 – June 21, 2010) was an American country singer, guitarist and musician. He recorded "Through the Eyes of Little Children" and "I Betcha Heaven's on a Dirt Road".

Sweden's HORISONT used their downtime to record a cover of "Sheldon Churchyard", originally produced and released by country musician Larry Jon Wilson.

The band comments on the idea of the recordings: "As big fans of country music we wanted to do a couple of songs that people might not expect from us. Still, we wanted them to sound like Horisont. So we set up at Let Them Swing Studio and hit the record button just to see where the songs took us. This is the result. Let Them Swing Studio is a recording studio in the countryside outside of Gothenburg, Sweden, owned and run by Kim and Malin. They rebuilt an old barn on their property and set it up for live recording. With no neighbours in sight, it's an ideal place to make noise 24-7. A weekend mixed of relaxed creativity and fun."

Charlie Parr - Last Of The Better Days Ahead

Charlie Parr spent a morning at Cloverlick Banjo Shop in Fort Collins a few months back.

He played us the title tracking his upcoming album (it’s already out out as the single, go track it down) and the full album comes out on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings on July 30th.

Charlie Parr’s newest album, "Last Of The Better Days Ahead", is a collection of powerful new songs about how one looks back on a life lived, as well as forward on what’s still to come. Its spare production foregrounds Parr’s poetic lyricism, his expressive, gritty voice ringing clear over deft acoustic guitar playing that references folk and blues motifs in Parr’s own exploratory, idiosyncratic style. When it comes to what it all means, Parr says it best:

“Last of the Better Days Ahead is a way for me to refer to the times I’m living in. I’m getting on in years, experiencing a shift in perspective that was once described by my mom as ‘a time when we turn from gazing into the future to gazing back at the past, as if we’re adrift in the current, slowly turning around.’ Some songs came from meditations on the fact that the portion of our brain devoted to memory is also the portion responsible for imagination, and what that entails for the collected experiences that we refer to as our lives. Other songs are cultivated primarily from the imagination, but also contain memories of what may be a real landscape, or at least one inspired by vivid dreaming. The album represents one full rotation of the boat in which we are adrift—looking ahead for a last look at the better days to come, then being turned around to see the leading edge of the past as it fades into the foggy dreamscape of our real and imagined histories.”

Enjoy today's tune “Last Of The Better Days Ahead", where the video was filmed at Cloverlick Banjo Shop in Fort Collins, CO.

Portrait - Phantom Fathomer

When it comes to modern heavy metal, there are few bands operating at the same level as PORTRAIT. For a decade and a half, the Swedish unit has been forging their own path, and in the process, infusing life into a longstanding, well-established genre and taking it in new directions.

Following up 2017's acclaimed "Burn The World", they return with the mighty "At One With None", which was recorded at JFK Studios in Kristianstad, Sweden with Tommy Hansen (HELLOWEEN, HATESPHERE) handling the mixing. While PORTRAIT fans will immediately recognize it as the work of their heroes, they are not simply rehashing old ideas and treading where they have before. "One simple 'rule' that I have had personally is that no song written for this album and onwards should be similar to any song that we have already written and released. We have been doing this for 15 years now, and I am proud to say that I think we have managed to find our own identity and sound, which can't really be said about that many bands today. This is our greatest achievement, and the goal is to keep exploring and developing our own sound, without repeating ourselves." The results of working with this philosophy are undeniable, making for an essential addition to the Portrait canon.

That the band holds itself to an undeniably high standard shines through at every turn, pushing themselves and refusing to let go until a song is perfect. "We take it very seriously and it is always a challenge to change arrangements or remove song parts which you have been satisfied with for months, suddenly realizing that they are not good enough. A part of you always wants to say 'This song is finished now, it will work out, let's move on with the next, and sometimes it's hard to accept anything else. No part, riff or melody is good enough if it 'works out, it needs to add something or else it must be scratched." Having started writing for the record in the first half of 2019, they ended up with 11 tracks, which they considered too much given their average song length, and the next job was to decide which would make it onto the album, never an easy task for a band that has sweated over everything they have written, finalizing this once the record was tracked in October of 2020.

Lyrically, all of the songs deal with spirituality in different forms. "I have a gnostic outlook on this world and existence, which naturally colors the lyrics," explains Lindell. "Some lyrics are 'philosophical' while others describe experiences of the unseen in different ways." The title track is about questioning that which is accepted as 'truth' on all levels of existence, and asking why things are as they seem. "On another level, the title and lyrics speak of the divine spark of all rebellious spirits, who are 'one with no-one' in this world and strive to transcend all limits in order to become at one with none, as in nought, before and beyond all."

PORTRAIT line-up:
Per Lengstedt - vocals
Christian Lindell - guitars
Fredrik Petersson - bass
Anders Persson - drums

Today's tune "Phantom Fathomer", which deals with the herd mentality and people's blind trust in authorities, in particular, the lyrics having an almost sarcastic twist to them, which is not something the band has really done before. Ministry - Good Trouble

After enduring a year like 2020, no one could have possibly expected Al Jourgensen to stay silent on the maelstrom of the past 12 months. As the mastermind behind pioneering industrial outfit MINISTRY, Jourgensen has spent the last four decades using music as a megaphone to rally listeners to the fight for equal rights, restoring American liberties, exposing exploitation and putting crooked politicians in their rightful place—set to a background of aggressive riffs, searing vocals and manipulated sounds to drive it home

"Moral Hygiene" comes on the heels of MINISTRY’s acclaimed 2018 album "AmeriKKKant" (hailed by Loudwire as Jourgensen’s own “state of the union” address) that was written as a reaction to Donald J. Trump being elected president—though Jourgensen says this new album is more informational and reflective in tone.

“With AmeriKKKant I was in shock that Trump won. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. Because I believe if you are a musician or an artist you should be expressing what’s going on around you through your art. It’s going to happen whether you do it consciously or unconsciously. "Moral Hygiene" however has progressed even further into a cautionary tale of what will happen if we don’t act. There’s less rage, but there’s more reflection and I bring in some guests to help cement that narrative".

With the release of "Moral Hygiene", Jourgensen is more positive than before. “This may sound crazy but I’m more hopeful about 2021 than I have been in two decades at least,” he says. “Because I do see things changing; people are starting to see through all the bullshit and want to get back to actual decorum in society. We could just treat each other nicely and be treated nicely in return. I never thought MINISTRY would be in the position of preaching traditional values, but this is the rebellion now".

MINISTRY have released a new single "Good Trouble", taken from the upcoming 15th album "Moral Hygiene", set to be released October 1st, 2021 via Nuclear Blast Records!

The Godfathers - Birth, School, Work, Death

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Birth, School, Work, Death" is the title tune from the alternative rock band THE GODFATHERS, released in 1988.

THE GODFATHERS are an English alternative rock/new wave band from London, England, with strong influences from R&B and punk. They were formed by Peter and Chris Coyne after the demise of THE SID PRESLEY EXPERIENCE in 1985, joined by Mike Gibson (guitar), Kris Dollimore (guitar) & George Mazur (drums). Fellow TSPE member and later GODFATHER, Del Bartle, went on to form THE UNHOLY TRINITY with drummer Kevin Murphy.

After independent single releases produced by Vic Maile, and collected on their debut album, "Hit By Hit", they signed to Epic Records in 1987. Extensive tours of the UK, Europe and the United States followed. Single and title track of their first album "Birth, School, Work, Death" made the U.S. Billboard Top 40 in 1988 after college radio and MTV airplay but the band were less commercially successful in the UK.

Albums "More Songs About Love and Hate" and "Unreal World" followed, with Chris Burrows replacing Kris Dollimore on guitar in time for the latter, after which THE GODFATHERS left Epic and released two albums on German label Intercord in the early 1990s. The band ceased activity in 2000.

In 2003 Peter Coyne and Kris Dollimore played briefly in a band called THE GERMANS with Rat Scabies, formerly of THE DAMNED.

Gost - Bound By The Horror

The greatest artists are restless souls, in constant need of fresh inspiration.

Once again, in 2021, the dark soul known as GOST is undergoing another dazzling transformation. When touring plans were shelved during 2020’s pandemic fall-out GOST simply returned home and dedicated himself to evolving his skills in a variety of digital media. As a result, the arrival of new album "Rites Of Love And Reverence" coincides with the holistic expansion of his vision. It offers an immersive journey fuelled by dystopian chaos and shrouded in futuristic mystery.

"Rites Of Love And Reverence" is both an album of beautifully crafted songs and a fascinating and intuitively gothic journey, rich with thoughts of supernatural wickedness and real world retribution. In keeping with its dark theme, it arrives adorned with the most stunning image GOST has used to date, created by celebrated doyen of macabre art, Nona Limmen. Both eerily psychedelic and hazily mysterious, it’s the perfect visual representation of this extraordinary record’s grim but vivid depths. The perfect soundtrack to these uncertain and frequently horrifying times, “Rites of Love and Reverence” renders GOST’s post-synthwave exploits in kaleidoscopic technicolor, delivering all the glass-shattering grit, incisive melodic melancholy and tripped-out, electronic fervour that his ever-expanding army of admirers demand. With big plans for a full-scale return to live action in the near future, GOST will be bringing plenty of shocks and surprises when these new songs are unleashed for the first time. The future, as ever, is his to mould at will.

Gost explains, “’A Fleeting Whisper’ is an homage to not only navigating spirituality but simply being human. The uncertainty of life makes living both beautiful and terrifying. We all carry around so many similar insecurities and feelings of doubt in this modern digital age. A time in our history which promises ultimate connectivity seems, all too often, to leave many of us feeling increasingly disconnected and alone.”

"Rites Of Love And Reverence" is set to be released August 13th, 2021 by Century Media Records

So sit tight and be ready for something different and enjoy today tune "Bound By The Horror" taken from the upcoming album "Rites Of Love And Reverence"!

Listen now on all streaming platforms: https://party.painworldwide.com

Blending '80s synth, electro, and metal, PAIN delivers one hell of an anthem providing a powerful sonic vaccine against the distress and depression caused by the worldwide pandemic.

Tägtgren comments: "I decided to write a song about all the bullshit from the last year of lock-up and people's struggle, including my own, to adapt to the new way of life. Suddenly, all of us had to deal with our inner selves in our secluded new life, so this is the cheer-up song for people. Each of us has our own party in our head. Musically, it's a hell of a party song. I can't wait to play it live."

Lucifer - Gone With The Wind Is My Love

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Gone With The Wind Is My Love" is a soul classic by Rita and The Tiaras. Ms. Rita Graham recorded the UK Northern Soul Hit Classic, "Gone With The Wind Is My Love". The Tiaras were studio singers whom Rita never met. A track from the Vibrations album, ‘My Cup Runneth Over With Love’ is also a Northern Soul Hit.

Swedish heavy rockers LUCIFER have joined forces with BLUES PILLS and made their very own striking interpretation of the Rita & The Tiaras classic “Gone With The Wind Is My Love”.

The single features a fabulous duet between Johanna of LUCIFER and Elin Larsson of BLUES PILLS backed with the LUCIFER band.

Side B features a live version of the LUCIFER track “Cemetery Eyes”, which was recorded during last year’s Century Media Isolation Festival and will now be available physically in this version for the first time.

“Especially The Rita & The Tiaras version of this 60s classic has always been one of my favorite numbers, it really moves me. So we hammered out this really cool, kind of eerie version for Lucifer and I asked my good friend Elin if she wants to sing it with me. She came down to Stockholm and we had a really great afternoon together at our studio recording this,” states LUCIFER frontwoman Johanna about the release.

Today's tune "Gone With The Wind Is My Love", taken from the 7-inch single.

Gaupa - Mjölksyra

Swedish female-fronted heavy rock act GAUPA (lynx in Swedish). With surreal lyrics, an energetic, very unique singer, and an addictive sound that combines progressive stoner rock with doom, folk and psychedelic rock influences, GAUPA released their self-titled debut EP in June 2018 and have since made a name for themselves in the international underground rock scene. The “GAUPA” EP was well received and led to the band playing one of their first live performances at Scandinavia’s biggest rock festival, Sweden Rock. GAUPA then got a chance to release the EP on vinyl via German label Kozmik Artifactz in October 2019 and went on to playing a good number of shows and festivals. Critics were impressed not only by the studio recordings and their diverse & complex arrangements, but also by the level of intensity the band displayed live.

In April 2020 GAUPA, followed up to release their first full length album, “Feberdröm,” gaining even more attention from both the underground scene as well as NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, who will release their next album in 2022.

Jens Prüter, Head Of A&R at Nuclear Blast Records Europe comments: “While most newcomer bands struggled during the Corona pandemic, GAUPA managed to grow by quality. Their unique sound hasn’t remained unnoticed and word of mouth spread fast. Once we had seen their live stream show and had some video conferences, we knew they would sit well in an artist roster that contains the likes of Graveyard, Opeth, Earthless and Meshuggah who appear to be some of their favorite bands, even if GAUPA isn’t very metal at all. But it’s that attitude to tear down boundaries between genres – just for the sake of art. We are proud to welcome them in good company.”

GAUPA's vocalist Emma Näslund adds: "We’re all still nurturing dreams of working more with our music and playing larger shows. One could argue that it would be time to shake those dreams and grow up. We don’t. If you’re doing something you love, keep going! We are beyond humbled to find ourselves among the giants and we’re very happy to announce our signing with Nuclear Blast!"
