Disturbed - The Vengeful One

The hiatus is over for the American heavy metal band DISTURBED. Over the past year, they been secretly writing and recording a brand new album, the first song is called “The Vengeful One” along with a new music video, see below. It’s off their upcoming album called “Immortalized”, which will be released on August 21, and is available for pre-order here. The album was recorded at The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas with record producer Kevin Churko.

DISTURBED was formed in 1994 as Brawl, the band was renamed Disturbed in 1996 after Draiman was hired as the band's new vocalist. The band has released five studio albums, four of which have consecutively debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200. DISTURBED went into an hiatus in October 2011 which ended in June 2015, during which, the band's members focused on various side projects.

The band's members are vocalist David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan, bassist John Moyer, and drummer Mike Wengren. Former band members are bassist Steve "Fuzz" Kmak and vocalist Erich Awalt.

Todays tune "The Vengeful One" is taken from the upcoming sixth studio album"Immortalized". The Video is Directed by Phil Mucci

Judas Priest - Painkiller

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week". This will be the last one for a few weeks, "Record Of The Week" will take a summer holiday and so will Tune Of The Day after this week. As I have been very busy on all fronts, making that music listening has suffered, especially new stuff, only bits and pieces here and there, so mostly classic album like this weeks "Record Of The Week" have been played.

"Painkiller" with JUDAS PRIEST have got allot of attention the last two months, I believe I have played this record almost 50 times and I never get bored with it, so that have to mean something.

"Painkiller" got released on September 3rd, 1990. "Painkiller" is the twelfth studio album. It is the last JUDAS PRIEST album to feature lead singer Rob Halford until his return for the 2005 album Angel of Retribution and the first to feature drummer Scott Travis, who replaced long-time drummer Dave Holland in 1989. Travis was previously a member of Los Angeles band RACER X.

Following the tour for this album, singer Rob Halford left the band in May 1992 and maintained little contact with his former bandmates throughout the 1990s. The reason for this was growing tensions within the band, as well as Halford's desire to explore new musical territory by creating a new band of his own, FIGHT, which forced him to legally leave JUDAS PRIEST to allow this creation to be sold. JUDAS PRIEST remained inactive for several years after Halford had left. However, the band would eventually re-vamp, record, and tour, recruiting new singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens in 1996, who would perform on the studio albums Jugulator and Demolition.

"Painkiller" is a real classic in my ears. It's JUDAS PRIEST heaviest release, an pure metal masterpiece. It's an album were every song is strong. It's intense album with allot of energy, sweat, with many memorable riffs and leads from Glenn and K.K. Insane drumming by Scott Travis and Halford's vocal is at it's best. The lyrics is the only weak point, they are pretty cheesy and silly, but that's fine by me, they aren't that bad, funny, oh yes. The sound is very good, one of JUDAS PRIESTs best sounding albums.

Summary: You really need "Painkiller", if you do not already have it, of course (:

Todays tune is the title track from "Painkiller", here JUDAS PRIEST goes for full-throttle!

KSMB - Rövarnas Visa

Sunday, time for a classic. Bråvalla festival is now over, it was a weekend with loads of music, a few good and interesting acts played there. Didn't see to much of the good stuff, but a few lika Faith No More, In Flames, Eagles Of Death Metal, Robbie Williams and a few others but there was one band, a really Legendary one, specially if you are Swedish.

The Swedish punk rock band KSMB did a one of exclusive gig at Bråvalla festival, Steppan, Alonzo, Johan Johansson, Peter Vial got up on a stage together. In the Punk Rock scene, they are one of Sweden's most important bands. A concert. Once and for all. For another, but above all for the audience.

KSMB was active during 1977 to 1982. The young band members grew up and lived in the working-class suburb Skärholmen outside Stockholm.

Johan Johansson, Mats Nilsson and Pekka Kangas had a band called "Ingenting" (Swedish for "nothing"). Their first and only gig was at Österholmsskolan in Skärholmen. In the autumn of 1977 most of the band members went to Skärholmens Gymnasium and discovered that if you worked with a project, like a band, you wouldn't have to go to all the lessons. "Skärholmens Gymnasiums Punkensemble" was started and, as a lot of people didn't want to go to the lessons, the band got a lot of members. After a chaotic gig in the aula in Skärholmens Gymnasium with 15 band members, of which 5 were singers, the project "Skärholmens Gymnasiums Punkensemble" was over, but the singers Steppan and Alonzo, drummer Johan Johansson and bassist Matte Nilsson continued and became the only constant members of "KSMB," as the new band was called. This abbreviation stood for "Kurt-Sunes med Berit".

Todays tune "Rövarnas Visa" is a song written by Thorbjørn Egner, to the People and robbers in Kamomilla town, which had stage premiere in 1956. The song is about the robbers Kasper, Jesper and Jonathan, that during the night goes to Kamomilla town to steal. Ulf Peder Olrog and Håkan Norlén gave the song the Swedish translation.

Muse - Mercy

Bråvalla festival is up and running atm. One of the headliners are the British rock band MUSE.
The band will enter the stage this evening if nothing comes in their way of course.

So let's play a tune with them today.

Today's tune "Mercy" is a tune taken from their seventh album, Drones. It was released as the second single from the album on 18 May 2015.

In a press release, the band's frontman Matt Bellamy said of the track, "The opening line of 'Mercy' - "Help me, I’ve fallen on the inside" - is a reference to the protagonist [of the album] knowing and recognising that they have lost something, they have lost themselves." Bellamy continued, "This is where they realise they're being overcome by the dark forces that were introduced in 'Psycho.'"

Muse's seventh studio album 'Drones' was  released on June 8, their follow-up to 2012's 'The 2nd Law'.

Speaking previously about the album, Bellamy said that it "explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors".

Bellamy recently claimed that 'Drones' is Muse's best album, admitting, "That’s not something I’ve been able to say for a while.

Mastodon - Asleep In The Deep

The progressive rockers MASTODON from Atlanta have released a brand new the video for their latest single "Asleep In The Deep". The band teamed up once again with "Once More 'Round The Sun" cover artist Skinner to push the boundaries of psychedelia as far as they can.

Skinner, who is the brain behind “Asleep in the Deep.” The video tells the psychedelic and epic journey of a house cat who unknowingly travels into a bizarre gypsy catacomb where it encounters a giant bullfrog, a three-headed evil rat king, cat gnomes, cheese slaves and a warrior squirrel. “Asleep in the Deep” is directed by Atlanta-based director, Video Rahim, and co-directed by Special FX guru, Shane Morton (Head of SPFX Make-Up on Adult Swim’s Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell) and Skinner. Hey Beautiful Jerk, a NYC-based design and visual effects boutique, provided creative direction and all post production services. The creator and co-director of “Asleep in the Deep”, Skinner, has this to say about the video:

"This concept was birthed out of my curiosity about what a cat really does at night while we are asleep,” says Skinner. “Where do they go? Cats have a very mysterious myth to them and I thought it would be cool to explore that, as little nocturnal heroes. I decided to put a sort of Joseph Campbell hero myth spin on it and add some Jodorowsky psychedelia as well. I’m more than excited about the way it came out! I love it!"

To celebrate the release of the video, they are offering a limited webstore exclusive bundle to celebrate the video premiere, which includes the “Asleep in the Deep” t-shirt and larger-than-life 24"x36" old school movie-style poster printed on 100# text paper. Both the “Asleep in the Deep” shirt and poster feature the exclusive art by Skinner.

This is a pre-sale item. Bundles will begin shipping by July 1. Order your limited web store exclusive bundle here.

Today's tune "Asleep In The Deep" is taken from the sixth studio album "Once More 'Round The Sun"

Symphony X - Without You

New Jersey’s progressive metal masters SYMPHONY X are set to release their brand new, ninth studio album called Underworld on July 24th via Nuclear Blast Records. The album's first single, "Nevermore," premiered on May 22, 2015, followed by "Without You" on June 19.

SYMPHONY X is an American progressive metal band from Middletown, New Jersey. Founded in 1994, the band consists of guitarist Michael Romeo, keyboardist Michael Pinnella, drummer Jason Rullo, lead vocalist Russell Allen and bassist Michael Lepond.

Underworld is not a concept album, Michael stated “like the last couple of records, there’s a theme that carries through, without it being storytelling. We try to find something to key in on and get the juices flowing, and here the goal was to find something a little dark but with emotional content. I started looking at Dante, and Orpheus in the underworld, where he’s going to go to Hades or hell to save this girl. So there’s the theme of going to hell and back for something or someone you care about.” Heavily inspired by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, Underworld draws on the themes from Divine Comedy most notably the part on Inferno. As homage to Dante’s use of the number 3 and its multiples, the band utilizes this motif in its music either in a lyrical or melodic context. The first song on the album is a three syllable, three note melodic phrase, and in the verses there are three references to three songs on the bands third album, The Divine Wings Of Tragedy. “There’s cool shit like this all over the record,” Romeo reports.

For Underworld’s cover art, SYMPHONY X went with their established illustrator Warren Flanagan (Watchmen, The Incredible Hulk, 2012), who similarly tapped into the “secret knowledge” vibe Michael and band embedded in the record. “Warren went with the masks, similar to the first record,” explains Romeo. “But when I discussed with him Dante and the underworld, he did his own research and designed a little symbol for each of the nine circles of hell. So there are these little geometric symbols that mean something. That’s just what he does. He gets in there and finds these things that maybe no one really besides us knows what it means and yet it has meaning.”

The record will be released in both CD and on LP. The Vinyl will of course releases in different versions. An Silver double vinyls in a gatefold sleeve (Limited to 200). An dark green double vinyls in a gatefold sleeve (Limited to 300). An transparent double vinyls in a gatefold sleeve (Limited to 500) and Black double vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.

Today's tune "Without You" is taken from the upcoming album "Underworld". Guitarist Michael Romeo comments “’Without You’ is a bit mellower than the first single, ‘Nevermore’, with a big chorus and a sweeping feel. I don’t know if I would call the track a ballad, but it’s a little bit softer, not so much about riff, but more the acoustic and electric interplay. Those two are good single choices, if you will, because they represent what the record is: it’s heavy, but at the same time, there are some of these soaring melodic parts.” The Video made by Tommy Antonini.

Pagan's Mind - Hallo Spaceboy

Today is Thetania birthday and of course we celebrate that with a tune of a band she loves, hurrah hurrah.

From Skien, Norway we find one of Thetanias favourite progressive metal heads PAGANS MIND. A band that have released five studio albums, and the current line-up is composed of founding members only, kinda impressive I must say.

So today's tune is all for you Thetania, Happy Birthday Love, enjoy your day!

Todays tune "Hallo Spaceboy" is taken from the fourth album "God's Equation", released on November 9, 2007. The tune was co-written by David Bowie and Brian Eno. Bowie wrote the song in mostly-improvised sessions with his band in 1995, and intentionally wrote it with a NINE INCH NAILS-like vibe. Of the track, Bowie said "I adore that track. In my mind, it was like Jim Morrison meets industrial. When I heard it back, I thought, 'Fuck me. It's like metal DOORS.' It's an extraordinary sound."

The Alfas - I'm Leaving You

Monday, New week and it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week".

Today we go a little outside the box, even if this ends up correct under the word "Record", it is not a full-length album, is just an EP. But it is so amazingly good that I can not resist to include it and it's me who decide what and who should be nominated so this week is just an EP, enough of that.

This week's "Record Of The Week" is "Day After Day" with the rock & blues quartet THE ALFAS from Stockholm, Sweden.

THE ALFAS plays an extremely professional rock that get its nourished from the 60s and 70s with an good ol' blues atmosphere. Do not know if I'm easily influenced after a weekend in Finnish brushwood of hard and dark music, but I can not stop smiling when the record spins in my ears. Yes I do not own it yet, but as soon as I can, I will buy the EP on Vinyl of course, as it's worth every penny.

The band was formed in september 2013. Shortly after that they went off on a tour around scandinavian and recorded in Gutterview studio in Solna with Fred Esby. Nothing will stop you from being drawn into the groove in their music.

THE ALFAS have a lighter groove that’s instantly captivating and pulls from a wide range of classic rock ‘n roll. Phenomenal song-writing with a lot of passion. An improvise blues and a hint of jazz that makes their sound unique. Some says its a crossover between CREAM, MC5 and BLUE CHEER, well judge yourself by playing the clip below, but I think it's a pretty good comparison. They have a really good swing with both heart and soul, so much that I get goose bumps.

The first song and the title track get me thinking of GRAVEYARD, but with a little more sense and soul, nothing bad against GRAVEYARD (They rock bad ass and I love them), but had to compare it to something so you get the hunch what I'm talking about. The second track (today's tune) have a bit more rockier touch than the previous blues tune, classic riffs from the late 60's. The 3:rd track "The Last Time" has a really good melody with amazing singing by Philip that sings high and fast, with the 60's rock that balance up Philips vocal in a excellent way. The 4:th "Aint Talkin'" takes another turn, where the 60's mixes up with the 70's rock. Here the instruments talks together with the vocals, a bit psychedelia is involved to get the atmosphere in the catchy verse.
The last tune on the EP "The Valley" is a half ballad to finish up this EP with a dignity that I just want to hit repeat. The tune have so much passion that my blood streams so fast that I think I got the fever.

To summarise this in a few words, YOU NEED THIS, COMPREHENDED!

THE ALFAS consists of:

Philip Lagerblad - Guitar & Vocals,
Oscar Ulfheden - Guitar & Backing Vocals,
Timothy Parker - Bass,
Andreas Wennerberg - Drums

Today's tune "I'm Leaving You" is the first singles taken from the EP "Day After Day", enjoy!

Kiss - New York Groove

Sunday, time for a classic. As Ace Frehley did a nice visit at Gröna Lund a few days ago I thought it would be nice to play a tune that he is behind even if he didn't write it. The show was clearly above expectations and I was quite happy when I went home. See the setlist below.

"New York Groove" is a song written by Russ Ballard and first recorded by The British glam rock band HELLO in 1975 for their debut album "Keeps Us Off the Streets" and later by Ace Frehley in 1978.

Ace Frehley recorded the song for his solo album released in 1978. Frehley, like the other then-current members of KISS, recorded and released a solo album. Released as a single, this song made it to No.13 on the American Billboard Hot 100 late that year, by far the highest charting single from any of the KISS members' solo albums. "New York Groove" was performed on KISSs tours of 1979 and 1980, and became a staple of Frehley's shows during his solo tours in the 1980s and 90s, and again during the Reunion Tour when he rejoined KISS in 1996.

A live version of the song can be found on the Japanese version of the 1996 album You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best!! (and the U.S. vinyl version) recorded in Sydney, Australia in 1980 which would also make it one of the few live recordings released by the group to feature longtime drummer Eric Carr. Ace Frehley once told Rolling Stone magazine that his unique take on the song was inspired by his experience with hookers in New York City's pre-Rudy Giuliani Times Square.

Todays tune is with KISS performing "New York Groove" under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, in 1996, for the Reunion Tour.
