Khemmis - Living Pyre

The Denver based doommetal band KHEMMIS have announce that their new album, "Deceiver", is coming your way on November 19th via Nuclear Blast Records. Even better, you can now hear the first single, "Living Pyre", check out below.

While the lyrical themes of "Deceiver", sorrow, pain, longing for hope, will no doubt be familiar to longtime fans, these six songs display a broader collection of musical influences than on any other KHEMMIS record to date. “It being our 4th album, especially after the transition between the last two albums, it felt really freeing. We felt that we could really do anything on this record,” explains drummer Zach Coleman. “There’s a lot here that we’ve never done before,” adds Pendergast. “In some areas it gets darkly psychedelic. I think we found a cool way to mutate things using transitions that feel really natural. There is a subtle symmetry between the first and last songs which is one of the things that makes listening to the full album a satisfying holistic experience. It builds from almost nothing, becomes very dark, and then you slowly crawl out of that lowest circle of hell.”

KHEMMIS’s "Deceiver" is a beautiful, musically ambitious journey from beginning to end drenched in impassioned melody and complex, unrestrained variations of sonic savagery adorned with chilling, intensely tragic cover art by frequent collaborator Sam Turner.

Today's tune “Living Pyre” is the first single from the upcoming album "Deceiver", it was a pivotal moment in the making of the album for Ben, Zach, and Phil. We had been struggling with coming to terms with what KHEMMIS means to us at this point in our lives, and what purpose this album would hold, more generally, for us and our personal growth as a band and as individuals. The majority of the instrumental came out of Ben in a single session, after feeling that he was finally in a good enough place mentally that he could connect to the creative spark again. For me, after many months of bitterness and even anger at the thought of having to dig so deeply into myself again to create something that I could feel passionately about, I decided to just express these feelings honestly and use them as a mission statement for the album. They were the first words I wrote for the album, and the first ones you hear on the first single from the album: “There’s nothing left to give, nothing to rake through coals”. In one of those rare, beautiful moments of artistic inspiration, the words came with the melody, and I could feel the seed of a concept for the whole album germinate in my mind. Enjoy!

The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromantic II

Monday and it's a new week, time for us to present "Record Of The Week".

It was barely a year and a half ago when we got served "Aeromantic" by the Swedish classic rock/AOR supergroup THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA, read about it here! Now they are back with a follow-up and their formula may no longer have the surprise factor of earlier efforts, it's already their sixth album and they simply titled the new one with "Aeromantic II", where they take us on another journey telling the stories of broken hearts, hopeful beginnings and glorious party nights! I guess that they probably were a few songs left from the previous one and that they could not tour with the album quite simply continue to fill up the already solid collection of songs for an upcoming tour when this misery finally releases.

If you loved the previous album "Aeromantic", then you can just skip this post and go buy the record, it will be right in your alley for sure. But if you are curious, then I offer an review of my thoughts on "Aeromantic II".

The album opens up with big 80's keys in "Violent Indigo", with great riffs and a catchy overall feeling, a big chorus, a great opener. Cool guitars open up the next tune inline "Midnight Marvelous" which switches to a real funky dance number, where you can easily show off your Travolta moves, incredibly catchy Disco with some cool beats, and a great solo. The tempo is increased further "How Long", a tune that has been described as "90s DEEP PURPLE on cocaine", and I can only agree as this is true eargasm, so catchy and driven tune makes it impossible to keep your feet steady on the ground. The opening tunes on "Burn For Me" is like a flash movie from the '80s were plenty of hit tunes flying by in seconds. The tune is another very catchy piece and the flashes continue, I see Elton John's wonderfully crazy piano playing, Steve Lukather from TOTO playing a few riffs, Phil Collins on drums, and so on. TNFO really makes images spin for the listener, especially those who were there right away when everything was for real. Shit, starting to feel old now, lol. It's a marvelous tune. And it doesn't stop here, it's time for a real feel-good dinner tune in "Chardonnay Nights", a little more secluded, still incredibly driven with cheeky passages and brilliant singing. "Change" serves us with more keys, big keys, great drumbeat, a bit different layout but I love what I hear and I get pictures in my brain from movies where this would fit in, feels like a song that would work in preparation for something, a march, a warm-up, etc., I think of movies like Top Gun, Rocky, and others. "Amber Through A Window" gives us a progressive pop disco, a great beat, catchy chorus, and some small fine delicate features here and there, well done guys. "I Will Try" gives us some big beats from the past where TEARS FOR FEARS comes to mind. "You Belong To The Night" gives us an Asian Disco feeling, a nice dance number to shake up to on the nearest club. "Zodiac" is a number that offers a slightly different approach, wandering bass lick, picking guitar, fast drum beat, but everything is spiced with very good singing that makes the result as good as possible. "White Jeans" was the first single and video from this album, a classic TNFO tune in the best possible way, a magic song. The album closes up with "Moonlit Skies", a big tune in a lower tempo where all the extra energy is played on the instruments. As everything is played in a dual sense, really cool and gives us the end of an era, and the beginning of an empire. The album "Aeromantic II" is a great follow-up that showcases a hungry band that still has its creativity on top to serve as a feel-good power-rock airborne soap opera, get it! And I'm sure the band will have a nightmare about making a setlist for the upcoming tour, haha!

Gaupa - Mjölksyra

Swedish female-fronted heavy rock act GAUPA (lynx in Swedish). With surreal lyrics, an energetic, very unique singer, and an addictive sound that combines progressive stoner rock with doom, folk and psychedelic rock influences, GAUPA released their self-titled debut EP in June 2018 and have since made a name for themselves in the international underground rock scene. The “GAUPA” EP was well received and led to the band playing one of their first live performances at Scandinavia’s biggest rock festival, Sweden Rock. GAUPA then got a chance to release the EP on vinyl via German label Kozmik Artifactz in October 2019 and went on to playing a good number of shows and festivals. Critics were impressed not only by the studio recordings and their diverse & complex arrangements, but also by the level of intensity the band displayed live.

In April 2020 GAUPA, followed up to release their first full length album, “Feberdröm,” gaining even more attention from both the underground scene as well as NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, who will release their next album in 2022.

Jens Prüter, Head Of A&R at Nuclear Blast Records Europe comments: “While most newcomer bands struggled during the Corona pandemic, GAUPA managed to grow by quality. Their unique sound hasn’t remained unnoticed and word of mouth spread fast. Once we had seen their live stream show and had some video conferences, we knew they would sit well in an artist roster that contains the likes of Graveyard, Opeth, Earthless and Meshuggah who appear to be some of their favorite bands, even if GAUPA isn’t very metal at all. But it’s that attitude to tear down boundaries between genres – just for the sake of art. We are proud to welcome them in good company.”

GAUPA's vocalist Emma Näslund adds: "We’re all still nurturing dreams of working more with our music and playing larger shows. One could argue that it would be time to shake those dreams and grow up. White Stones - Kuarahy

Monday, new week, time to present "Record Of The Week".

From Martin Méndez, bassist of the ubiquitous OPETH comes WHITE STONES, a solo death metal project, that their debut album named "Kuarahy" (pronounced Kwa-Ra-Hee) will be released on March 20th, 2020 via Nuclear Blast.

Martín Méndez was just 17 years old when he moved from Uruguay to Sweden to play bass in OPETH. During the years with OPETH that gravitated towards the more progressive and psychedelic territory and leaving the type of music, he was grown up. With WHITE STONES debut he revisits the heaviness he started out playing. The album "Kuarahy" is named after his birthplace in Uruguay, “Kuarahy” is the native Uruguayan people’s word for "Sun", the record represents a return to his roots, both familial and musically. By exploring the forgotten paths of his ancestors via the style of music that remains his one true love - death metal.

"Kuarahy" is a groovy, heavy, and dark piece, that easily could associate it with an old OPETH album, like "Deliverance" for instance. It's not the same, a pretty unfair association, but it will work out for those who want that OPETH growls again :) On the album has Mendez taking care of both bass and rhythm guitar in the studio, along with the singer Eloi Boucherie (VIDRES A LA SANG) and drummer Jordi Farre (CRUCIAMENTUM), and his OPETH bandmate Fredrik Akesson has taken care of all of the guitar solos, except for one tune were former KATATONIA and BLOODBATH guitarist Per Eriksson shows his skill.

The album has a dark and atmospheric vibe with lots of progressive thinking in the tune buildings. I guess there the associations with OPETH. From the short instrumental opening with the title tune that builds up the path for melodic and progressive "Rusty Shell", tasty and heavy riffs with growling vocals, an excellent piece of music to kick start the album. There are plenty of excellent tunes on the album, like the progressive and delightful "Drowned In Time" or "The One" where we get served a great solo by Per Eriksson."Worms" is a groovy beast and "Guyra" is another tasty piece with catchy hooks and delicious riffs and where Frederik Akesson provides a solo that you will fall backward on. It doesn't end here, the tune "Ashes" forces thru like an overheated iron factory with its living and wide structure. The progressive and a bit far-out "Infected Soul" is beauty in itself, also the following "Taste Of Blood" is an excellent one. The album closes up with the sentimental "Jazy" and ends up an excellent debut that will get a lot of spins in the future. Paradise Lost - Obsidian

Monday, it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Obsidian" is the sixteenth studio album from Halifax’s finest gothic metal band PARADISE LOST. It was released on 15 May 2020 via Nuclear Blast.

Over the past 32 years, PARADISE LOST have never got stuck in one genre, always developed and willingness to try a different path without taking an excessive step to finally lose themselves in something unknown that they do not master, they have somehow always sounded like PARADISE LOST.

With the new album PARADISE LOST continues to keep the excellent shape and form they have mastered on the last two records while the reaches out to the past and bring on plenty of gothic roots that they first got recon with, here they mix it up with heavier and doomier roots stuff, with sprinkles of progginess and dark melodicism.

"Obsidian" is an excellent album release, all from the elegant and emotionally crushing opener "Darker Thoughts", followed on the same path in "Fall From Grace" to the more gothic dreamy "Ghosts" is real swing filler, until it's time for the album to really get going with more heavy and doomier riffage and tormented solos in tunes like "The Devil Embraced", "Serenity" and the doomy "Forsaken". There are a few other dark beauty's like the "Ending Days" with an excellent performance of the drummer Waltteri Väyrynen and the melancholy gothic piece "Hope Dies Young". There are two bonus tunes on the deluxe version, "Hear The Night" and "Defiler", both are slightly weaker tunes comparing to the rest of the album. The band sounds really good and continue to impress, yes, they shake hands with classic bands like THE SISTERS OF MERCY and MISSION as an influence to their own creation to make it surprisingly refreshing and it's a pure pleasure to spin this album, it's damn good and deserves to be played.

Avatarium - The Fire I Long For

New Week, time to present "Record Of The Week"

The Swedish doom metal gurus AVATARIUM have returned with their fourth dark gospel "The Fire I Long For", after a couple of laps I kneel down and stretch my arms up towards the sky and roar a joy scream and the neighbors wonder what the hell happened there, I answer AVATARIUM.

The band was founded in 2012 by Leif Edling of CANDLEMASS, AVATARIUM soon saw the arrival of Marcus Jidell (producer CANDLEMASS) and Jennie-Ann Smith who brought an air of charisma with her soulful grace. By now, the band has become an entity of its own and while Leif decided to take a step aside, but still he has contributed three songs for the new album.

Only two years after taking the fans by storm with "Hurricanes And Halos", the album ended in 11th place when 2017 was summarized. "The Fire I Long For" includes 9 spellbinding tunes. Doom laden hooks and beautiful soaring guitar solos by Marcus Jidell and seductive and magic vocals by Jennie-Ann Smith together with a rhythm section of Andreas ”Habo” Johansson on drums, Mats Rydström on bass and the organist Rickard Nilsson.

"The Fire I Long For" is another chapter of their hauntingly beautiful doom creation. With a slow renewal and slightly developing of their own sound and craftmanship on every release to create its signature, make a mark and that is something very clear on this album. Nice magical pieces from the opening bombastic tune "Voices", heavy uplifting riffing and seductive vocals that smack right into the head. The first single "Rubicon" with a heavy loop that just glues hard in your mind, that you just go whistling to, simple but so brilliant. The intimate and beautiful "Lay Me Down" is a softer and gentle side of the band. The doomish and catchy "Porcelain Skull" have a few marvelous parts like the guitar solo and the organs. Doomish and psychedelic rocker "Shake The Demon" to the melancholy and pompous PURPLE like "Great Beyond". These are followed by a beautiful and catchy title tune. "Epitaph Of Heroes", the longest tune on the album, follows the classic CANDLEMASS palette, melodic and heavy juicy riffing and excellent vocals. The album closes off with the jazzy "Stars They Move" where the piano caresses Jennie-Ann's vocals in a magical way. The album is the band’s most varied release, great creation and a big step to try something new within them selfs. It feels that the focus is at the top and the creation step has been thought true. I'm really happy with the release and across the album’s 44-minute playing time I feel the joy rush through my body and choose to play it another lap. Highly recommended.

"The Fire I Long For" was recorded at Studio DeepWell in Stockholm, the album was produced by Marcus Jidell, mixed by Grammy Award winner Niklas Flyckt and mastered by Svante Forsback (RAMMSTEIN). The album was released by Nuclear Blast on November 22nd, 2019.

Alcest - Protection

Blackgaze pioneers ALCEST dive back into metal territories with the new single "Protection", (see and hear it below) taken from the upcoming sixth album "Spiritual Instinct", looks like this might be a breathtaking piece of art that I am looking forward to.

Death - Voice Of The Soul

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Voice Of The Soul" is a tune by the American death metal band DEATH. It's taken from the bands seventh and final studio album "The Sound Of Perseverance", released on September 15, 1998, by Nuclear Blast. This is the only album to feature guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin.

"Voice Of The Soul" is an instrumental track that contrasts with almost every other work of the band in its inclusion of softer guitars and lack of percussion.

In an interview done in March 1999, Chuck Schuldiner stated that the acoustic guitar-driven "Voice of the Soul" was actually written during the "Symbolic" sessions. DEATH has produced only two instrumentals (the other being the more electric guitar driven "Cosmic Sea" from the album "Human"). The album also featured a cover of JUDAS PRIESTs "Painkiller", which shows Schuldiner attempting a different, high-pitched style of death growl more reminiscent of Rob Halford's original vocals and also singing for the first time with a clean voice through the end of the song. All the solos in the song are rewritten.

Some of the song names and music on "The Sound of Perseverance" was originally going to appear on the first "Control Denied" album, "The Fragile Art of Existence". Schuldiner himself denied this in an interview with Metal Maniacs in 1998 by saying that none of his compositions for "Control Denied" had been used to fill space for a DEATH album. Schuldiner implied that some "Control Denied" songs were used for "The Sound of Perseverance" in an interview with Scream Magazine in October 1999, when he stated that "The Fragile Art of Existence" contains a lot of music I didn't have in mind originally. Most of the material was completed in 1996-97. Also, Tim Aymar, in December 2010, confirmed that a few of the "Control Denied" songs had been, in his words, "'Deathized' and recorded on TSOP." When DEATH was signed on to Nuclear Blast, Schuldiner agreed to make one last DEATH album before moving forward with "Control Denied".

Death Angel - Humanicide

San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal veterans DEATH ANGEL will release their long-awaited ninth full-length album, "Humanicide", on May 31 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Since 2010, we've been able to count on DEATH ANGEL putting out a new album every three years. The tradition rages on with "Humanicide", the next full length and they've just unchained the first single and the title track, which can be seen and heard below.

DEATH ANGEL will celebrate the record's release by undertaking a European tour later this year, which includes a Sweden performance at Sweden Rock Festival on June 5. DEATH ANGEL on tour supporting Overkill starting in April, see all the dates below.

The Night Flight Orchestra - This Time

After taking the world of rock music by storm with last year's surprise hit "Amber Galactic", which also got nominated for a Swedish Grammy in the process, and leaving people speechless after a breath-taking first European tour in November/December, Swedish classic/progressive rock supergroup THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA have completed the works on their impatiently awaited next album.



The band Air submitted the following message from outer space:

"THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA returns with another chapter in their steaming space opera that began with "Amber Galactic".

This time, the female space commanders want even more revenge than they already had, space is even more infinite, and the amount of champagne it takes to keep this navy afloat and adrift in the cosmos is probably illegal on most planets!

Never looking back, THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA boldly goes where no man or woman has ever gone before, and with this album, they've taken another step in their quest to elevate classic rock from being a music genre to becoming an immersive whole-body transcendental experience!

It's time to prepare yourself, because the riffs will be riffier, the vocals will be throatier, the synthesizers will envelop you, the AOR will be AOR-ier, the long songs will be longer, the short songs will be shorter, the bass will seduce you, the drums will destroy you, the groove will hypnotize and paralyze you. Can you handle it?"

"Sometimes The World Ain't Enough" was again produced by the band themselves and was recorded at Handsome Hard Music / Larsson Music Studio as well as Nordic Sound Lab in Skara, Sweden. Mixing duties were taken on by the band's guitarist/percussionist Sebastian Forslund and mastering was done by Thomas ”Plec” Johansson at The Panic Room. Set to be released on June 29 via Nuclear Blast.

Recording the video for our first single ”This Time”, was like combining different dimensions in a space cocktail. Numerous times during the video shoot, band members had to call the tax authorities, to confirm their names in the register, to make sure they had not lost all contact with reality. The result is surely mesmerizing and will take you on a journey that will be hard to digest. This is also our first video featuring the ”The Airline Annas”, our beautiful and super talented back up singers. They certainly made this video sparkle. The song itself, is the album opener and might not be representative for the whole album - no song really is, but we just like it that way. We make albums and each and every song leads it’s own little life and together they form a celebratory album with class, hooks and a bass that could walk a million miles without stopping for a drink. This trailblazer of a song used to be just ours, now it’s yours too.”

Tax The Heat - Fed To The Lions

TAX THE HEAT was born from a pure love of straight-ahead rhythm and blues music. With nods to many of their influences, calling back to a time when rock’n’roll was still new, vibrant and exciting while all the time keeping an energy-filled modern, alternative edge to the music they create.

Leading on from a chance meeting in a record store between two old school friends, TAX THE HEAT crafted the early rumblings of their retro-rock’n’roll sound in the late-night living room jam sessions. As a result, the 4-piece started recording their own demos using whatever suitable equipment and locations were available at the time.

The band have since found the ears of some of their most well respected contemporaries with Scott Gorham of THIN LIZZY fame announcing TAX THE HEAT as his ‘Favourite New Band’ on VH1’s “That Metal Show” (USA). They also gained the interest of legendary producer Chris Goss (MASTERS OF REALITY, QOTSA, THE CULT, BRMC) who, upon hearing the strength of the band’s self-recorded demos, immediately insisted upon coming to Bath, England at the end of his Masters of Reality tour to produce the E.P alongside engineer Tom Dalgety (BAND OF SKULLS, ROYAL BLOOD, THE MACABEES). TAX THE HEATs début E.P was subsequently released in November 2013 on a limited run of 10” vinyl to coincide with a string of successful support slots including a UK Tour. The band’s music has gone on to receive airtime on UK radio at such stations as BBC Introducing and Kerrang! Radio, with their singles ‘Fed To The Lions’ and ‘Highway Home’ both being added to the Planet Rock Radio A-list (main playlist).

Slayer - Repentless

The brand new, eleventh SLAYER studio album "Repentless", out September 11, 2015 (worldwide) via Nuclear Blast Records.

Repentless is SLAYER's first new studio album since 2009's critically-acclaimed, Grammy-nominated World Painted Blood. The twelve songs were produced by Terry Date and recorded between August 2014 and mid-January 2015 at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles.
