West London five-piece CHUBBY AND THE GANG are balanced by two energies – a casual “fuck it” on one side, an active “fuck off” on the other. For every moment of punk imperfection, there’s an intricate flurry of detail. For every enraged statement about modern life as war, there’s a lyric like “Hello heartbreak, my old friend” that catches you off guard. Made up of musicians from across the consistently thriving and criminally overlooked UK hardcore scene (ft. THE CHISEL, BIG CHEESE and more), CHUBBY AND THE GANG marinate its characteristic speed and sick-of-it-all energy in a mixture of 50s pop sounds. The result is a prickly take on the older, more melodic genres that punk derives from, chewing them up and spitting them out into something mangled but revitalised.
They have cited influences including the RAMONES, DR. FEELGOOD, COLOURED BALLS and IRON VIRGIN. In reference to the band's choice of sound, Manning-Walker stated "I wanted to put in an organ, a handclap, a harmonica, a tambourine and the quick element of it comes from me only experiencing hardcore for 15 years. Because of where I come from it all ended up being 200mph." Their music also often makes use of vocal samples from television series and movies such as the Jimmie Rodgers Show.
I really like what I hear and I will try to get a copy of the new album "The Mutt's Nuts", so maybe a review will come soon.

DEAD FINKS is the musical output of New Zealand-born duo Joseph Thomas and Erin Violet. Formed in Sydney sometime in the late '10s, it's current incarnation is a four-piece rock band based in Berlin.
On "The Death & Resurrection Of Jonathon Cowboy" the band showcase an incredible knack for writing catchy and unique melodies. They play punk music in the tradition of WIRE or SONIC YOUTH and take cues from contemporaries like PARQUET COURTS and ICEAGE in their efforts to manipulate and expand upon what it means to be a punk group in 2021.
Written and recorded in Sydney, late 2018 (shortly before the duo moved to Berlin) the LP serves as a strange prediction of the horrible state of the world today. Songs about war, plagues, pissing, police, David Cronenberg’s Videodrome and the climate burning. Its a sea of wiry guitars and thumping bass that plants itself inside your inner ear and doesn’t leave. Thomas’ smart-ass delivery and literary style with odd references abounding, sees a return to something similarly touched upon in his previous group TRUST PUNKS.
Stripped down rock music that knows what it is and smashes you over the head. Vocal harmonies and lush organ sounds. It sounds really good. Divorcing somewhat on this release from the harsh underground sounds of previous iterations of the band.

Punk legends THE DAMNED did release thier “The Rockfield Files” EP last year and it has been lying around waiting to be publish, dunno why I waited so long but here it is.
Back in 1980 and 1981, The band had gone to Rockfield Studios, located in a small village in Monmouthshire, southeast Wales, for a series of sessions that eventually led to the release of some of their career-best music, such as “The Black Album”, “Friday 13th” EP, and Strawberries.
In 2019, THE DAMNED returned to Rockfield studios to record their followup material to 2018’s "Evil Spirits" album.
During the recording of the Rockfield Files EP, THE DAMNED’s lineup included three out of the four members that were at the original Strawberries-era sessions: David Vanian, Captain Sensible, and Paul Gray. There was also Monty Oxymoron on keyboards and Pinch on drums. Unbeknown to the band, however, this was to be the last recording with the longtime drummer Pinch, who departed after The Damned’s legendary Night of 1000 vampires concert at The London Palladium last Halloween, where Dave Vanian dressed up as Nosferatu and led a cover of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”.
For the first time, Tom Dalgety (ROYAL BLOOD, RAMMSTEIN, GHOST) took over the producer duties for the EP. He also mixed the tracks at his studio in Bath.
The EP will be available in black and psychedelic swirl limited-edition vinyl. “The Rockfield Files” EP was released on October 16, 2020 via Search And Destroy/Spinefarm.

"Private Life" is a 1980 song written by Chrissie Hynde, and released by both English band THE PRETENDERS, and Jamaican singer Grace Jones in 1980.
The tune is taken from the debut studio album by British-American band THE PRETENDERS, released on 27 December 1979 on Sire Records in the US and on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket".

Birmingham’s original punk group THE PREFECTS had been part of THE CLASH’s "White Riot Tour", recorded a couple of Peel sessions, released a 45 on Rough Trade and, years after splitting up, had a retrospective CD released by NY label Acute Records to all round glowing reviews – from Rolling Stone to webzines.
THE NIGHTINGALES was formed by a few members of THE PREFECTS following that band’s demise in 1979.
Described in John Robb’s definitive book on post-punk (“Death To Trad Rock”) as “The misfits’ misfits” and comprising an ever fluctuating line up, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, THE NIGHTINGALES enjoyed cult status in the early ’80’s as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, who said of them – “Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980’s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans”.
The group recorded a bunch of critically acclaimed singles – pretty much always ‘Single Of The Week’ in the music press – and three albums, plus many radio sessions for their great supporter Peel. They also regularly toured the UK and Northern Europe, as headliners and supporting acts as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico.
In the late Eighties, THE NIGHTINGALES stopped working but, following the occasional gig between times, they re-grouped in 2004.
After fucking about with various part-timers, starry-eyed wastrels, precious sorts and mercenaries the group arrived at it’s current (and now long standing) line up, which features Lloyd, Andreas Schmid from FAUST on bass, ex VIOLET VIOLET wonder drummer Fliss Kitson and on guitar James Smith, who Lloyd had spotted playing with DAMO SUZUKI.
Since restarting the group have been more productive than ever – releasing seven 7″ vinyl singles, a 10” EP, two 6 song mini albums and eight full length studio albums. They have regularly toured the UK and mainland Europe and also USA numerous times, playing various festivals and recording many radio sessions along the way.
The band continued and continue to operate with no manager, booking agent, publisher, et al, but they get by. And they work equally well with pop musicians, rock n rollers and the avant garde. The group is independent, maverick, diligent, daft, blah blah.
Until recent times THE NIGHTINGALES made one record for a label and then, by choice or otherwise, moved on. But since 2017 they have been going steady with Tiny Global Productions.
The first TGP release was the sold out “Become Not Becoming” 10” EP, followed in 2018 by a 45rpm collaboration with Vic Godard – “Commercial Suicide Man”- and another critically acclaimed ‘Gales album “Perish The Thought” and to support this album the group toured Europe extensively, from Scotland to Serbia.
2019 saw the recording of a new album plus filming of a feature-length Nightingales documentary film, “King Rocker” – written and presented by brilliant stand-up comedian Stewart Lee, directed by Michael Cumming (‘Brass Eye’, ‘Toast Of London’, etc).
The album, “Four Against Fate”, was released in May 2020 and was highly praised, largely being acknowledged as the Gales best record to date.
Unfortunately, the accompanying “Four Against Fate” UK tour had to be postponed, several times, until late 2021 and penciled European and U.S shows were canceled until 2022.
Plans for “King Rocker” were also disrupted in 2020, but the film had its TV premiere on Sky Arts in February 2021 and was reviewed and received with great gusto and stunning comments (‘Best rockumentary ever’, etc) by the public and respected film critics alike.
Seemingly loved by all who have seen it – with the exception of professional psychotherapist Philippa Perry who said, “This is shit” – the movie was an Official Selection at the prestigious Sheffield Doc Fest and received it’s World Theatrical Premiere in June 2021, with more TV and cinema screenings around the globe booked for later in the year and beyond.
A new split single with Stewart Lee was released in April, alongside a ‘deluxe’ double LP reissue of the band’s first album, “Pigs On Purpose” – the first of an upcoming series of expanded, remastered reissues of the group’s earlier catalog.
THE NIGHTINGALES will now fulfill their “Four Against Fate” UK tour in October and will have an exciting FAF remix 12” ‘Disco 45’ to coincide.
In the Spring of 2022 the band will be unleashing another new album and supporting it once again with a headline UK tour. There will be a handful of festival dates in the Summer, plus at some point the rescheduled shows in Europe and America.
Before too long, alongside the new album, assorted reissues and records of previously unreleased material, there are a few other surprises planned. Plus “King Rocker” will be continuing it’s Worldwide crusade and… by hook or by crook, more adventures will follow.

In July came a little sneaky release, a new song and video with the Swedish punk/metal band BOMBUS.
"Abomination Rock’n’Roll" is the new tune where the typical BOMBUS sound is intact with some punkish attitude, a rocker that could wake any sleeping party. So happy to hear that they are back.

Melbourne punk ’n’ roll crew AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS will release their second album, "Comfort To Me", on September 10, and are previewing the collection with aggressive aggro-punk single "Guided By Angels".
Written during lockdown, the quartet’s new album was influenced by and expanded on a heavier pool of references - old-school rock’n’roll (AC/DC, ROSE TATTOO, MOTÖRHEAD and Wendy O Williams), modern hardcore (WARTHOG and POWER TRIP) and the steady homeland heroes (COLOURED BALLS and COSMIC PSYCHOS).
Lyrically, the album was influenced by Taylor’s rap idols and countless garage bands. Seventeen songs were recorded in the "Comfort To Me" sessions and the top 13 made the cut. They were mixed long-distance by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, IDLES, YEAH YEAH YEAHS) and mastered by Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, Prince, Dr Dre).

"Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely" is a song by HÜSKER Dü from their album "Candy Apple Grey". The song was written by Grant Hart. It was released both as an EP in the United States and as a single in the United Kingdom in March 1986. HÜSKER Dü filmed a promotional video for the song, which garnered the band some play on MTV.
HÜSKER Dü was an American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist/vocalist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. HÜSKER Dü first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, later crossing over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs.
Following the release of three LPs and an EP on independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed Zen Arcade in 1984, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986 to release their final two studio albums. HÜSKER Dü disbanded in January 1988. Mould later released two solo albums before forming SUGAR in the early 1990s, while Hart released a solo album on SST and later formed NOVA MOB.
After the respective bands broke up in the mid-1990s, Mould and Hart continued doing solo work, the latter until his death in 2017. Norton was initially less active musically after HÜSKER Dü and focused on being a restaurateur instead. He returned to the recording industry in 2006.
Today's tune "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely" is taken from the fifth album "Candy Apple Grey", released in 1986. It was their first major label album, though Warner Bros. "Candy Apple Grey" also marks the completion of the band's transition from hardcore punk to a more well-rounded sonic style which would later come to be known as alternative rock or college rock. As usual, Bob Mould and Grant Hart individually wrote tracks on the album. While the band's earlier, more frenetic style is still evident, "Candy Apple Grey" also features more introverted, toned-down material, including a relatively large amount of acoustic guitar.
Saturday, time to wake up your French skills with the French punk band GUERILLA POUBELLE.
The band was formed in 2003. The name translates to "Dustbin (Garbage Can) Guerrilla" in English.
Their lyrics are based on anarchist and existentialist beliefs and the band are DIY enthusiasts, lead singer and guitarist Till being behind the record label and concert promoter Guerilla Asso founded in 2004.
The band formed as a four-piece, following the break of ska-punk band LES BETTERAVES. The band originally incorporated a painter who painted and provided backing vocals during shows. Their debut album, entitled Il Faut Repeindre Le Monde… En Noir (The world Must Be Repainted… In Black) was released in 2005.
The have released numerous splits and EPs, as well as four albums, releasing music on their own Guerilla Asso, Asian Man Records and Crash Disques. The band has toured widely (France, Europe, Japan, Canada, USA) and played over 1 000 live shows.
GUERILLA POUBELLE has consistently refused to register with the French royalties collection society SACEM, in line with their values, despite selling a significant number of records for an independent band. The band have remained consistent over the years in playing mostly fast, short punk rock songs sung in French, with Till Lemoine's vocal delivery urgent and gritty.

The tune translates to "The Heist of the Century", and is about the gap between the ruling class and the stockholder is getting smaller every day. In France and everywhere else those partners in crime are emptying our welfare funds and breaking our public services up. The economy is trying to justify this but it’s all about profit for a chosen few. We should be working for us.

The Swedish Punk rockers VÄRLDEN BRINNER released their second album "Vi Äger Natten" (We Own the Night) yesterday (3/4 - 2020) on (ViciSolum Records) and the message is clear: "Scenes will be owned, Women should take place and feel safe, and the world should be a better place for all living things"

Yesterday I was working with a Colombian singer Maluma, a Latino guy that looks to be very popular in Sweden, not really my kind of music.
But still, I was a little affected by it so I decided to have a classic from Colombia today.
1280 ALMAS is a Colombian rock band formed in Bogotá and active since the late '80s, considered one of the greatest exponents of Alternative Rock thanks to a differential proposal that involves subgenres such as Punk or Post Hardcore fused to Latin and Afro-Caribbean rhythms like salsa and skate. His discourse that mixes the social with the invitation to brotherhood and joy has given him a very important place within the Bogotana and Colombian scene.
Today's tune "Antipatriota" is taken from the sixth studio album "Pueblo Alimaña", released September 29, 2012, produced by the band on the independent label La Coneja Ciega. It was produced by Juan Carlos Rojas, Bassist of the group and mastered by Felipe López, The album cover shows the independence leaders surrounded by symbols alluding to "souls". Enjoy!
T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty) is an American punk rock band formed in 1978 in Long Beach, California. Although most commonly associated with hardcore punk, T.S.O.L.'s music has varied on each release, including such styles as deathrock, art-punk, horror punk and other varieties of punk music.
Formed in 1978 in Long Beach, T.S.O.L. originated as a punk band, developing from earlier bands SS Cult and Johnny Koathanger and the Abortions. The original lineup consisted of vocalist Jack Grisham (who has been credited as Jack Greggors, Alex Morgon, Jack Ladoga, Jack Delauge and Jack Loyd, among pseudonyms), guitarist Ron Emory, bassist Mike Roche and drummer Todd Barnes. According to legend, the band acquired their instruments by casing a local music shop, waiting until closing, and then performing a smash-and-grab robbery.
Today's tune "Flowers By The Door" is taken from the third studio album "Change Today?", released in 1984 through Enigma Records. It was the band's first album with singer/guitarist Joe Wood and drummer Mitch Dean, replacing founding members Jack Grisham and Todd Barnes who had left the band in late 1983. The album was recorded using money loaned to T.S.O.L. by the DEAD KENNEDYS, and found the new incarnation of the band moving away from the hardcore punk associations of the original lineup in favor of traditional rock and gothic rock sound. "Change Today?" was reissued in 1999 through the Enigma subsidiary Restless Records, adding four tracks from the recording sessions that had been left off the original album.

The sludgy hardcore/metal Swedish band HORNDAL finds it's way to tune of the day. The band has their roots in a small industrial town in the Swedish woods with the same name is the band – Horndal. A place with a gruesome story to tell.
In the late seventies, the steel mill that employed almost the whole population was threatened with termination. To protest against this a theatre group, including the parents of the band’s singer and drummer, wrote and set up a play about this disastrous event.
The plot depicts the devil (played by their father) coming to the town to shut down the steel mill, leave the exploited workers to their fate and send the whole community to an early grave. Sadly the story came true. The factory was closed and the town was left for dead. The band translated the play and made into their lyrics.
The story is told on the band's debut album "Remains" where we find today's tune "Häng Honom" (Hang Him). The album was released February 22, 2019. Mixed and Mastered by Karl Daniel Lidén

"Polsk Zchlager" is a tune by the Swedish punk rock band KSMB (Kurt-Sunes med Berit), they were active between 1977 to 1982. The young band members grew up and lived in the suburb Skärholmen outside Stockholm.
"Polsk Zchlager" suites well after two days of Polish trouble and misery of a band that could be popular and exalted, but instead get misunderstood and not reliable. Finally, maybe even forgotten, hopefully not.

BESVÄRJELSEN (Swedish for “Conjuring”) formed in 2014 by members out of bands like DOZER, GREENLEAF, AFGRUND, LASTKAJ and V. One can tell their influences has also been drawn from all these genres represented in their musical history. However rooted in Doom you will find traces of Progressive Metal, Punk, Folk, and simply old classic Rock n’ Roll that has been carefully weaved together to a sound as heavy as it’s sophisticated.
The band released their first EP “Villfarelser” in 2015 which was later followed up by yet another EP “Exil” in 2016. Both EP’s was well received by Swedish media and the band got quite a lot of radio plays on Swedish National Radio even though having released both EP’s themselves and not being backed up by any record label.
2017 has been spent writing and recording new songs which now has been funneled down to the bands first full-length album "Vallmo" (Swedish for "Poppy"). "Vallmo" is an album that more than ever showcase the bands enormous potential. Seamlessly wandering from crushing Doom riffs to catchy vocals and melodies, deep lyrical content and drum beats from hell, all topped with beautiful guitar solos and layers. A totally new addition to the debut "Vallmo" is that BESVÄRJELSEN now has songs in English as well as in Swedish, so for today we pick an English one so you all get a chance to follow the lyrics.

Belgium’s LA MUERTE is an extreme, horrifying interesting, cruel and unexpected band that originally forming in 1983, splitting up in 1994 and sporadically releasing material without officially reforming until 2014, they’ve remained entrenched in the underground. Their music is a blend of noise rock, hardcore punk, dirty rock ‘n’ roll and whatever other unhinged heaviness has been gestating in the minds of the band since their split.
