Dust-dry desert blues, savvy stoner rock and African polyrhythms come together rousingly on the multilingual new SONGHOY BLUES album "Optimisme".
The quartet was formed in 2012 as an act of rebellion in Mali and has since been regarded as one of the most exciting African band projects. On the new album "Optimisme" songs, the band presents themself significantly rockier, harder and punchier than on the previous two albums "Music In Exile" (2015) and "Résistance" (2017). The band consist of Aliou Touré, Garba Touré, Oumar Touré, and Drissa Kone
Today's tune "Worry" is taken from "Optimisme", released 23rd October 2020.
“The harshness of life still weighs on our societies and sinks many young people into a dead end,” says the band in a unified statement. “’Worry’ is a positive energy that Songhoy Blues want to be a ray of hope for humanity. ‘Worry’ is about not stopping fighting because at the very end you will find the light.”
For over six decades, Mavis Staples has spoken out against injustices with her music and activism. Both as a solo artist and a member of the legendary THE STAPLE SINGERS, Staples has made countless contributions to the canon of socially conscious music.
Still going strong at 82 years of age, she released the album, “Live in London,” on February 8, 2019. A follow-up, “We Get By,” on May 24, 2019 were we pick today's tune "Change" from, the album’s lead single is a bluesy call to action which highlights issues such as inequality and gun violence (“Fingers on the trigger around here/ Bullets flying, mothers crying / We gotta change around here”).
Mavis Staples is an important artist whose music bridges the gap between the past and present. She continues to pave the way for current and future generations of socially conscious musicians.
During the album release she released a statement, Staples said, "These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better."
The album's cover features the photograph "Outside Looking In" by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden.

"Miss You" is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was released as a single by THE ROLLING STONES in May 1978, one month in advance of their album "Some Girls", and peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart.
"Miss You" was written by Mick Jagger jamming with keyboardist Billy Preston during rehearsals for the March 1977 El Mocambo club gigs, recordings from which appeared on side three of double live album "Love You Live" (1977). Keith Richards is credited as co-writer as was the case for all Rolling Stones originals written by either partner or in tandem.
Jagger and Ronnie Wood insist that "Miss You" wasn't conceived as a disco song, while Richards said, "'Miss You' was a damn good disco record; it was calculated to be one." In any case, what was going on in discotheques did make it to the recording. Charlie Watts said, "A lot of those songs like 'Miss You' on 'Some Girls' ... were heavily influenced by going to the discos. You can hear it in a lot of those four-to-the-floor and the Philadelphia-style drumming."
For the bass part, Bill Wyman started from Preston's bass guitar on the song demo. Chris Kimsey, who engineered the recording, said Wyman went "to quite a few clubs before he got that bass line sorted out", which Kimsey said "made that song". Wyman recalled: "When I did the riff for 'Miss You' – which made the song, and every band in the world copied it for the next year: Rod Stewart, all of them – it still said Jagger/Richard. When I wrote the riff for 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', it became Jagger/Richard, and that's the way it was. It just became part and parcel of the way the band functioned."
Unlike most of Some Girls, "Miss You" features several studio musicians. In addition to Sugar Blue who, according to Wood, was found by Jagger busking on the streets of Paris, Ian McLagan plays understated Wurlitzer electric piano, and Mel Collins provides the tenor saxophone solo for the instrumental break.
Today's tune "Miss You" is made by the American singer Etta James. The tempo of "Miss You" is slowed down to a "sensual simmer" and she does it so good, so good! The tune was on her twenty-fourth studio album "Matriarch Of The Blues", released in December 2000 through the record label Private Music.
The Swedish gothic blues rocker Bror Gunnar Jansson is back with some new tunes and have a new album in the pipeline "Faceless Evil, Nameless Fear" that is set to be released September 24th.

May 21. With this album Bror Gunnar is spinning a tale of corrupt police officers, grim murders, weird deaths, diseases and even love! Jumping between our real world and his own dark universe.
A few days ago, Friday 13th to be more excat he released his latest single "Eat Me!" and is probably the most ridiculous song he ever written - at least so far! regarding to him self that he says on his social media. The song is about a person who takes the expression “you are what you eat” way too seriously. In order not to become someone else the person eats oneself and also offers others to take part of the "smörgåsbord". Swedish listeners can probably hear the musical reference to one of Jojje Wadenius most famous children’s songs.
So for today we have his new excellent single "Eat Me!" as today's tune, taken from the upcoming album "Faceless Evil, Nameless Fear", enjoy!
Here is a clip from a live performance at Pustervik, Gothenburg.
Charlie Parr spent a morning at Cloverlick Banjo Shop in Fort Collins a few months back.
He played us the title tracking his upcoming album (it’s already out out as the single, go track it down) and the full album comes out on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings on July 30th.
Charlie Parr’s newest album, "Last Of The Better Days Ahead", is a collection of powerful new songs about how one looks back on a life lived, as well as forward on what’s still to come. Its spare production foregrounds Parr’s poetic lyricism, his expressive, gritty voice ringing clear over deft acoustic guitar playing that references folk and blues motifs in Parr’s own exploratory, idiosyncratic style. When it comes to what it all means, Parr says it best:
“Last of the Better Days Ahead is a way for me to refer to the times I’m living in. I’m getting on in years, experiencing a shift in perspective that was once described by my mom as ‘a time when we turn from gazing into the future to gazing back at the past, as if we’re adrift in the current, slowly turning around.’ Some songs came from meditations on the fact that the portion of our brain devoted to memory is also the portion responsible for imagination, and what that entails for the collected experiences that we refer to as our lives. Other songs are cultivated primarily from the imagination, but also contain memories of what may be a real landscape, or at least one inspired by vivid dreaming. The album represents one full rotation of the boat in which we are adrift—looking ahead for a last look at the better days to come, then being turned around to see the leading edge of the past as it fades into the foggy dreamscape of our real and imagined histories.”
Enjoy today's tune “Last Of The Better Days Ahead", where the video was filmed at Cloverlick Banjo Shop in Fort Collins, CO.
Muddy Waters, was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician who was an important figure in the post-war blues scene, and is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues." His style of playing has been described as "raining down Delta beatitude."
Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.
In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band—Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elga Edmonds (also known as Elgin Evans) on drums and Otis Spann on piano—recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man," "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready." In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.
Muddy Waters' music has influenced various American music genres, including rock and roll and rock music.
Today's tune "Got My Mojo Working" is a blues song written by Preston "Red" Foster and first recorded by R&B singer Ann Cole in 1956. Foster's lyrics describe several amulets or talismans, called mojo, which are associated with hoodoo, an early African-American folk-magic belief system.
In 1957, Muddy Waters adapted the song with some different lyrics and a new musical arrangement. It was a feature of his performances throughout his career, with a live version recorded in 1960 identified as the best known. Waters' rendition has received several awards and otherwise recognized by various organizations and publications. As a blues standard, it has been recorded by numerous blues and other artists.
The video clip is from the "Blues Masters" 1966 Canadian TV, enjoy!
Mighty Joe Young, was an American Chicago blues guitarist.
Young was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, moving to Milwaukee in about 1945. He was an amateur boxer in the 1940s, but he later recalled that "It was nothing to write home about... I decided that music was the best thing to do."[4] He began his music career in the early 1950s, singing on the Milwaukee nightclub circuit and taking his stage name after the film of the same name. In 1955, he returned to Louisiana to make his recording debut, for Jiffy Records.
He then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a sideman, notably with Joe Little & his Heart Breakers and later Billy Boy Arnold. After recording "Why Baby" / "Empty Arms" for Bobby Robinson's Fire Records in 1961, he performed with Otis Rush in the early 1960s, playing on Rush's album Cold Day in Hell. He also continued to record under his own name for small labels such as Webcor, Celtex, and Jacklyn. He played on Magic Sam's albums West Side Soul and Black Magic and also worked with Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, Tyrone Davis and Jimmy Dawkins.
Young's album Blues with a Touch of Soul was released by Delmark Records in 1971, and two further albums followed on the Ovation label in the mid-1970s.
Young regularly performed in the 1970s and 1980s at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago. His song "Turning Point" was used in the feature film Thief (1981), directed by Michael Mann.
In 1986 he began work on an album, eventually released in 1997 as Mighty Man. After he underwent surgery on a pinched nerve in his neck, he developed numbness in his fingers, which affected his ability to play guitar. In 1998, he underwent further surgery on his spine in an attempt to regain feeling in his fingers, but he died at the age of 71 after developing pneumonia.
Today's tune "As The Years Go Passing By" is taken from his self titled album released on (Ovation), 1976, enjoy!
"Junker Blues" is a piano blues song first recorded in 1940 by Champion Jack Dupree. It formed the basis of several later songs including the 1949 "The Fat Man" by Fats Domino and the 1952 "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" by Lloyd Price. The song is about a drug user's conflict with life and the law, makes references to cocaine, "needles", "reefers", and life in the penitentiary, and contains admonishments against the use of hard drugs.
The song was written sometime in the 1920s by Willie Hall, known as "Drive 'em Down" Hall, a blues and boogie-woogie pianist from New Orleans. Hall never recorded nor received credit for the song. In 1940, Champion Jack Dupree, an American pianist who referred to Hall as his "father", recorded the song for the first time on Okeh Records (OKeh 06152).
In 1958, a different version of this song, Junker's Blues, penned by Dupree himself, and which focuses on the allure of hard drugs, appeared on Dupree's first album Blues from the Gutter featuring Larry Dale on guitar, Wendell Marshall on double bass, Willie Jones on drums and Pete Brown on alto saxophone.
William Thomas "Champion Jack" Dupree (July 23, 1909 or July 4, 1910 – January 21, 1992) was an American blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer. His nickname was derived from his early career as a boxer.
Enjoy today's classic. The video is from King Curtis & Champion Jack Dupree Live from Montreux June 17th 1971 with Cornell Dupree on guitar, Jerry Jemmott on bass and Oliver Jackson on drums. Filmed two months before King Curtis' tragic death.
Over the course of three full-length albums and two EPs, Jonathon Robert Linaberry — the songwriter, storyteller, visual artist, and one-man band behind The Bones of J.R. Jones — has woven his own tapestry of American roots music. It's a classic sound for the modern world, influenced not only by blues, soul, and forward-thinking folk, but also by J.R.'s environment.
As a one-man band, J.R.'s project, which fuses a moody blend of soul, blues, roots, and Americana, sounds enormous both on record and live in concert. That's because J.R. plays - and has grown accustomed to playing - every instrument by himself.
The Bones of J.R. Jones from Rosendale, NY
Today's tune "The Heat" from his 2016 album "Spirit's Furnace". This live performance was filmed in Welcome To 1979 studios in Nashville.
With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter Amythyst Kiah has released "Black Myself", the debut solo recording for Rounder Records, it also includes a stylish video, see it below.
Amythyst Kiah expands on the uncompromising artistry she most recently revealed as part of Our Native Daughters, an all-women-of-color supergroup whose Kiah-penned standout "Black Myself" earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the 2019 Folk Alliance International Awards. When met with the transcendent quality of her newly elevated sound, what emerges is an extraordinary vessel for Kiah’s songwriting: a raw yet nuanced examination of grief, alienation, and the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance.
This new studio version of "Black Myself" is a glorious collision of two vastly different worlds: the iconoclastic alt-rock that first sparked her musical passion, and the roots/old-time-music scene.
Produced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Amos Lee, Andrew Bird) the track was recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles.
“Kwaku Otchere's artistic eye and ability to create such powerful visuals while simultaneously keeping everyone on set safe amid the pandemic is truly remarkable. Adding the talents of choreographer Aysha Upchurch and dancer Des Polk allowed this project to flourish even further. The four of us helped realize the vision of this video by incorporating our individual experiences of being black in America.” - Amythyst Kiah
Enjoy today's tune "Black Myself", released February 19, 2021.
BISHOP GUNN is a 4-piece blues Americana rock and roll country band from Natchez, Mississippi. It consists of Travis McCready (vocals/guitar/harmonica), Ben Lewis (bass/ backing vocals), Burne Sharpe (drums/ backing vocals) and Drew Smithers (Lead guitar/ backing vocals). BISHOP GUNN are influenced by artists such as Wilson Pickett, LYNYRD SKYNYRD and SOUNDGARDEN. The band are named after a tombstone they saw in Natchez, that was over the resting place of the sixth Bishop of Natchez, John Edward Gunn.
BISHOP GUNN plays Southern-rock that really show case that they are proud of their roots. Their single release, “Alabama”, is a marvelous piece full of swampy haunting chord, gospel-influenced vocal hooks. The tune is taken from the bands latest album “Natchez”, after the band’s Mississippi hometown. An album with stomping swampy blues and electrified soul. enjoy!
The Video of this Southern horror story was directed by Tyler Barksdale.
Sun is shining, the spring is finally here for real. So it was more than welcome to get some Blues-Roots with the American rock duo THE BLACK KEYS and their new album "Delta Kream".
"Delta Kream" is the tenth album, released through Easy Eye Sound and Nonesuch Records on May 14, 2021.
"Delta Kream" is a cover album with their own rendition of the Mississippi artists who inspired them over the years. So this is an album full of hill country blues songs. Here you get some covers of songs by Kimbrough, Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. Each of its 11 tunes sounds like it's really handpicked from their stash of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney’s favorite tunes, with some nice company of the slide guitarist Kenny Brown, who is known to be playing on some of Kimbrough’s finest albums and the bassist Eric Deaton, a former sideman to R. L. Burnside.
The album opens up with the first single, a cover of "Crawling Kingsnake", a version of Big Joe Williams and John Lee Hooker, where they do an excellent rendition. "Mellow Peaches" is another nice one of Big Joe Williams's creations. Dirty hilly billy blues in the best possible way. Junior Kimbrough is the one who was the inspiration to all this started and his tunes are the most played in their own versions, like the tunes "Stay All Night" that turns out to be more lay back than Junior Kimbrough even if the soundscape is way bigger. The same goes with "Do The Romp", "Sad Days, Lonely Nights", "Walk With Me" and the very soulful and sensitive version of "Come And Go With Me". R. L. Burnside's tunes "Poor Boy A Long Way From Home" have a great stomp, while he sings with a light voice on "Going Down South". Mississippi Fred McDowell's tune "Louise" gets a sleek caress and the old Ranie Burnette's blues classic "Coal Black Mattie" with the marvelous lyrics gets a really dirty rendition. "Delta Kream" is an excellent blues honor record, even if this might feel like a collection of single b-sides and bonus tunes for many KEYS fans. But I do like what I hear and during these spring days it works brilliantly and I'm almost sure this will be played a lot in the upcoming months.
Patrick Carney – Drums
Dan Auerbach – Vocals, Electric Guitar
Sum: Excellent swampy blues roots to add to the collection!
Today's tune "Going Down South" is the second single out of "Delta Kream", enjoy!
Big Mama Thornton, was an American rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter. She was the first to record Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog", in 1952, which became her biggest hit, staying seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B chart in 1953 and selling almost two million copies. Thornton's other recordings included the original version of "Ball and Chain", which she wrote.
Today's tune "Ball And Chain" is a blues song written and recorded by American blues artist Big Mama Thornton. Although her recording did not appear on the record charts, the song has become one of Thornton's best-known, largely due to performances and recordings by Janis Joplin.
In the early 1960s,Thornton recorded several songs for Bay-Tone Records. Two were released on a single, "You Did Me Wrong" and "Big Mama's Blues".A review by Billboard magazine noted "moderate sales potential", but it did not enter the magazine's R&B single chart. According to music writer Gillian Gaar, Thornton also recorded "Ball And Chain" for Bay Tone, although it was never released.
In 1968, Arhoolie Records released "Ball And Chain". An edited version, titled "Ball And Chain Part 1" was released as a single, while the complete four and a half minute song is included on a joint album by Thornton, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Larry Williams titled "Ball And Chain". Thornton is backed by a small combo with her frequent guitar accompanist Edward "Bee" Houston. She later recorded several live and studio performances of the song, included her 1969 Billboard Top 200 album "Stronger Than Dirt".
Today's version of "Ball And Chain" is Big Mama Thornton with Buddy Guy's Blues Band. Enjoy!
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, the American 21-year old blues guitarist who has quickly made a name for himself with his vintage style.
Christone "Kingfish" Ingram from Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States, who became a well-known performer as a teenager. His debut album, "Kingfish", was released in May 2019. In addition to his own album, musicians he has recorded with include Eric Gales, Buddy Guy and Keb Mo. He has shared the stage with well-known blues artists and younger blues musicians such as the TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND, Samantha Fish, Bob Margolin, Eric Gales, Rick Derringer, Guitar Shorty and Buddy Guy.
Kingfish holds the generational torch of the blues high and this youngster has a promising future ahead in the next wave of blues musicians to keep the tradition alive.

Old Kerry Mckee is a one-man-band based in rural Sweden, in the outskirts of the village Larv. He started out as a death-metal musician but eventually replaced band members with acoustic guitar, home-built drums and an old record player. He's the link that should not be between old folk, blues and black metal. Forged in punk and metal, but forever steeped in the gritty, crooked and idiosyncratic blues-gone-horrid that is so evident in his music. At the same time it's gut-wrenchingly beautiful, dynamic and without a doubt soulful to the max.
Old Kerry Mckee blends the contemporary with the past into his own peculiar compound that transpires genres such as country, metal, folk, and punk. His music has been described as melancholic and with nasal howlings and dark lyrics he battles subjects like poverty, humanism & psychedelia.
When this exquisite spectrum of sound and emotion is performed live we experience something best described as a collision of natural elements, conducted by a guy who wears his heart on his distressed sleeve, cutting it open for everyone to see inside.
Ever since the initial beginnings of Old Kerry McKee, the acoustic guitar has always been the companion closest to heart, faithful, proudly represented and also the most evident part of the creative process. And so, after many years, guitars, experiments and curses, it has fulfilled its role and is now to be succeeded by the electric guitar. This, accompanied by the ever present vinyl player and a new found friend, the cassette recorder, a new sound is slowly taking its shape with the new album. More obscure old vinyls and self constructed sound effects in a grumbling mass will continue to be a big part of the new music, and so as something old is buried, something new is brought to life. Those still standing will be well versed...
"Mono Secular Sounds" is an excellent album, order it on Vinyl just a few minutes ago, I belive I will get back on this as soon as it arrives. Get "Mono Secular Sounds" on bandcamp here https://oldkerrymckee.bandcamp.com/

KING HOBO is a rock band from Sweden, formed in 2005. Jean-Paul Gaster from CLUTCH met OPETH keyboardist Per Wiberg at the Sounds of the Underground Tour. They jammed together, and allowed other musicians to join them, with the motto of "get funky or get out". Later, they gathered at a home Wiberg rented in Sweden, and invited KAMCHATKA guitarist Thomas Andersson and Ulf Rockis Ivarsson, among others, to record an album in one week, witch resulted of the release of the self-titled album "King Hobo" (2008). After busy times with their regular bands KING HOBO was left on the bookshelf for some time until it was time to shake off the dust and record the second album "Mauga" (2019). The band is called "a triumph of musicianship drawing on all the talent at the group's disposal.
"Mauga" was release on May 31st via the CLUTCHs record label, Weathermaker Music.
Today's tune "King Blues" is taken from the latest release "Mauga", the clip is filmed live when

SPIDERGAWD is a rock band formed in Trondheim, Norway in 2013. A band that easily would be classed as one of the finest from that country in the present time.
The founding fathers of the beast was Per Borten (CADILLAC & MOVING OOS) on guitars and vocals, Bent Sæther (MOTORPSYCHO, THE INTERNATIONAL TUSSLER SOCIETY & SUGARFOOT) on bass, Rolf Martin Snustad (HOPALONG KNUT, SMAVIRKELAGET & NORTHERN STAR GROOVE ALLIANCE) on saxophones and Kenneth Kapstad (MOTORPSYCHO, MONOLITHIC, GOD SEED & GÅTE) on drums. On June 1 2016 it was announced that Bent Sæther was leaving the band to have more time for his other projects. The band brought on Hallvard Gaardløs (ORANGO) as a fulltime bassist, who had been touring with the band in support of the "Spidergawd III" album.
They released their debut album "Spidergawd" on 31 January 2014, and their sophomore album "Spidergawd II" on 16 January 2015. The next album, appropriately called "Spidergawd III", was released 22 January 2016. The band has been touring Norway, Germany, The Netherlands and Italy on grounds familiar to MOTORPSYCHO, which are hungry for more Norwegian rock.
Today's tune "Is This Love..?" taken from "Spidergawd IV", filmed Live in Soergarden Studio.

"Blue Jean Blues" is a tune taken from the fourth studio album "Fandango!" by the American blues-rock band ZZ TOP, released in 1975. Half the tracks are selections from live shows, the rest are new songs from the studio. A remastered and expanded edition of this album was released on February 28, 2006.
A sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas, ZZ Top specialized in down-and-dirty blues-rock during the '70s, then scored colorful MTV hits during the 1980s. Formed in Houston in 1970 by Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums), the trio came from a pair of rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit "La Grange," a signature riff tune to this day, based on John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen." Their success continued unabated throughout the '70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour.
"Blue Jean Blues" was also released as a B-side on the single "Tush".
As always, the trio is out on the road and a visit to Sweden rock next month. Enjoy today's tune.
