Hällas - Isle Of Wisdom

Monday, time to present "Record Of The Week" ⚡

"Isle Of Wisdom" is the latest release by the Swedish 70's progressive rockers HÄLLAS. "Isle Of Wisdom" is the follow up to the near flawless full lengths, "Excerpts From A Future Past" (2017) and "Conundrum" (2020). The new album follows the same root they once have created but with a minor upgrade, the sound is much better than the previous one, neeter production so all of the grandiose harmonies really sees the light. They seem more determined than ever and that really seeps out of the cracks. Traversing through an evocative, feel-good blend of nostalgic 70’s hard rock, proto-metal, folk and psychedelic influences - "Isle Of Wisdom" emerges as the anticipated third studio album. The new album is produced in collaboration with Linn Fijal and Vilma Colling at Riksmixningsverket studio, which has hosted the diverse likes of ARCH ENEMY, ABBA and Celine Dion, HÄLLAS experienced the rare chance to once again use ABBA’s unique synthesizers for the production of "Isle Of Wisdom".

"Isle Of Wisdom" is a eight track album with a play time of fourtyfive minutes. They really serves the listner with another marvelous journey, the melodies are like earworms where all songs have their own characteristics. The album opens up with "Birth / Into Darkness" and "Advent Of Dawn" two of HÄLLAS heaviest tunes they ever have recorded. Marvelous riffing and great vocals from the unique voice of Tommy Alexandersson. The mystical first single "Earl’s Theme" slows down slightly, but have a big atmosphere that almost knocks you down. "Gallivants (Of Space)" is a real grandious beauty with it's marvlous melody and vertiginous keys by Nicklas Malmqvist. The dramatic "Elusion’s Gate" dreamy "The Inner Chamber" and "Stygian Depths" are few other great tunes before the final "The Wind Carries The Word" that ends this magical album in a epic way, with it's seven minutes it's really demonstrate the band’s virtuosity and the song-writing skills that the band possesses. I can only congratulate you on another magical chapter in this saga. Well done! Hope to see them live soon.

Sum: "Isle Of Wisdom" provides an incredible journey.

Today's tune "Elusion's Gate", taken from "Isle Of Wisdom", enjoy!

Gazpacho - Winter Is Never

Norwegian proggers GAZPACHO have released new live album and Blu-ray "Fireworker At St. Croix" in March, 2022. They also have shared a new live video for their song "Winter Is Never", which you can watch below.

The tune "Winter Is Never" originally featured in the band's 2009 album "Tick Tock". The new live version is taken from the band's new "Fireworker At St. Croix", a recording of the band's live stream for their 2020 album "Fireworker", which was released through Kscope on March 11. A moody trip into the world of "The Fireworker", captured on the 25th October 2020. No fixes, no polishes, no light show, no nothing. Just the pure rendition of the music along with a surprise or two.

The original core of the band consisted of Jan-Henrik Ohme (vocals), Jon-Arne Vilbo (guitars), and Thomas Andersen (keyboards, programming, production). They started making music together in 1996 and the band has since expanded with Mikael Krømer (violin, co-producer), Robert R Johansen (drums), and Kristian Torp (bass).

Enjoy todays tune "Winter Is Never", the third single from thier upcoming collection of films and live music will be the old favourite of many. "Winter Is Never" is a song about growing up and the magic of childhood. Something we can not forget. Especially now.

Rush - Dreamline

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Dreamline" is a song by the Canadian rock band RUSH. It was released as a single and on their 1991 album "Roll The Bones". The song peaked at number one on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and was a staple for live performances by RUSH, having been performed on every tour from the inaugural "Roll The Bones Tour" until the 2010 and 2011 "Time Machine Tour", when it was dropped. It was performed during the subsequent "Clockwork Angels Tour", where it was accompanied by the "Clockwork Angels" string ensemble and a video with a dedication to Neil Armstrong. It was dropped again on the 2015 "R40 Tour". In live performances, the bridge was extended to incorporate a solo by Alex Lifeson.

Bassist and singer Geddy Lee said: "I love the spirit of "Dreamline" and the way Neil captures that feeling of wanderlust and invulnerability that comes in a particular trying time in your life."

Martin Popoff said that the song is "strafed by a crouching-then-striking verse and clouds-breaking chorus. It is a track that proved to be strong enough to open the "Different Stages" live album seven years later and then stay tenaciously in the set for the "Vapor Trails Tour"."

AllMusic writer Eduardo Rivadavia called the song "gutsy" and also said that "Dreamline" is one of their best songs from the '90s.

Enjoy today's classic!

Dvne - SÍ-XIV

DVNE is a 5-piece metal band from Edinburgh, UK. Taking influences from a myriad of genres including post metal, doom, and progressive rock. Combining fierce riffs and melodic textures, Dvne travels an epic dark sci-fi universe with hints of psychedelia. Long live the Kwisatz Haderach.

DVNE are a band of great contrasts, weaving titanic heaviness and intricate gentleness together, complex lyrical ideas with engaging storylines, and this has only been expanded upon and concentrated on second album "Etemen Ænka". "It's an album that has a narrative musically and we hope will encourage the listener to explore the universe we've created around it," states guitarist/vocalist Victor Vicart. "It is a very dense and layered album which will reward multiple listens, and while this is becoming a recurring aspect of our music, we feel that we went further with it this time. It's also a very polarising album, emotionally speaking. The heavy sections are, well, very heavy, while the clean sections are much more intricate and delicate and in a way wouldn't be out of place in a Studio Ghibli anime soundtrack." Exploring everything in greater depth in every way, it is a profound step forward from 2017's Asheran, starting an exciting new chapter in the existence of one of the most thrilling and imaginative metal bands active today.

Today's tune "SI-XIV" is taken from the new album "Etemen Ænka", released March 19, 2021.

Allegaeon - Roundabout

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Roundabout" is a song by the English progressive rock band YES from their fourth studio album "Fragile", released in November 1971. It was written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe and produced by the band and Eddy Offord. The song originated when the band were on tour and travelled from Aberdeen to Glasgow, and went through many roundabouts on the way.

Today's cover is made by the American extreme metal band ALLEGAEON from Fort Collins, Colorado.

ALLEGAEON embraced their love of prog last year, delivering a blistering and killer cover of the YES classic "Roundabout".

Singer Riley McShane said, “In this cover we try to showcase not only those influences, but also how we as individual musicians have been impacted by the music of yesteryear and how that impact has helped us to develop our own styles of playing.” It’s an impressive nod to a period of music that definitely impacted the band. The tune was released on April 3, 2020.

Strawbs - Hero And Heroine

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Hero And Heroine" is a song by English band STRAWBS featured on their 1974 album of the same name. It is written by Dave Cousins and has obvious drug allusions, the main reason it didn't get much airplay on BBC radio. The song is in a similar vein to an earlier track "Witchwood" but with rather more obvious allegory.

Dave Cousins originally demonstrated the song to the band on banjo and the guitar picking under the verses does indeed retain a bluegrass feel. Keyboardist John Hawken and guitarist Dave Lambert added mellotron and guitar power chords between the verses which gives the whole song a more epic bearing.

STRAWBS are an English rock band founded in 1964 as the Strawberry Hill Boys. The band started out as a bluegrass group, but eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock, progressive rock, and (briefly) glam rock.

They are best known for their hit "Part of the Union", which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart in February 1973, as well as for "Lay Down", a popular progressive rock hit from the same LP. The STRAWBS also toured with SUPERTRAMP in their "Crime of the Century" tour, doing their own "Hero and Heroine" tour, which drew musical similarities and themes.

Hero And Heroine - Live in Tokyo 1975 with band members: Dave Cousins - vocals, guitar, Dave Lambert - vocals, guitar, John Hawken - keyboards, Chas Cronk - bass, vocals, Rod Coombes - drums

Enjoy today's classic where the video is a great one, filmed Live in Gettysburg: Rites of Spring Festival 2016. The video is a medley featuring following songs: Autumn: (I) Heroine's Theme / (Ii) Deep Summer's Sleep / (Iii) The Winter Long, Hero And Heroine, Angst & Lay a Little Light On Me / Hero's Theme / Round And Round (Reprise) / Shine On Silver Sun (Reprise). Band members: Dave Cousins / vocals, electric & acoustic guitars - Dave Lambert / lead guitar, vocals - Dave Bainbridge / keyboards / programming - Chas Cronk / bass, bass pedals, 12-string guitar, vocals - Tony Fernandez / drums, percussion.

Xixa - Genesis

Monday, a new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Genesis" is the sophomore album by the mystic desert rock XIXA. Formed in the heart of the deep American Southwest, XIXA is a guitar-slinging six-piece, uniquely attuned to the desert and their Latin roots. Combining gritty guitars, the bumping grind of chicha, and desert blues into a mesmerizing stew. They're also a band whose time had come to define what they call "The New Southwest"-intense, sun-bleached music shot through with an inky gothic horror that scans like the long-lost soundtrack to a cult, macabre B-movie Western.

Their debut record, 2016 "Bloodline," saw them inject heavy fuzz guitars and Latin pulses into sandy rock and roll, a potent mix that took them all over the world for two whole years. For 2019s EP "The Code" they blended psych-rock, cumbia, goth rock, cowboy folk, and windswept desert blues into a dark, simmering occult.

On "Genesis" we find that XIXA delving deeper into their admiration for Peruvian chicha, extracting and refining their core, and giving voice to their most primal instincts. Informed by the band's rich history as songwriters and storytellers, they've carved a wider space for their psychedelic rock to swell, a place where scoundrels and coyotes roam free, and magic runs deep in the earth. It is the ultimate desert trip.

"Genesis" contains ten magical tunes with a playtime of forty-two minutes. It's a wonderfully sprawling story, Morricone feeling that lies over the album like a piece of silk, from the opening tune "Thine Is The Kingdom" that serving an atmospheric and epic landscape, soaring and summoning vocals. Throughout the album, the band has a great balance in the musical roots of the modern Americana and the Latin rhythms where they serve us a "smörgårdsbord" of liveliness, dance-friendly rhythms, with very great creativity that gives a wide and innovative result. "Land Where We Lie" gives us some singing by the Uummannaq Children’s Choir, the summer Latino inspired "Eclipse", the psychedelic rocker "Soma", the high tempo world music piece "Eve Of Agnes" featuring Imarhan (Algerian Tuareg desert rock quintet), that species of the tune with some Saharan desert vibes. "Velveteen" is a far-out psych beauty that follows up by the Latino galloping "May They Call Us Home", a spaghetti Westerns with Morricone floating in the space. The half-paced Tom Waits-sounding piece "Nights Plutonian Shore" is a real beauty of the blackened post-apocalyptic world and the vocals from Gabriel Sullivan are so deep and powerful and with Sergio Mendoza on piano. The album closes up with the country's slow-burner "Feast Of Ascension" in the best possible way. The album is a thrilling ride for those rockers and poppers with open minds. I really dig this and I have always been weak for bands that dare to take the turns a bit. So I do recommend this!

The lineup of XIXA consists of twin percussion (Winston Watson on drums and Efrén Cruz Chávez on Timbales and percussion), keyboards (Jason Urman), bass (Hikit Corbel), alongside twin guitar leads (Gabriel Sullivan and Brian Lopez who both share lead vocals).

Sum: This is the long-lost soundtrack to a cult, macabre B-movie Western.

Lunatic Soul - Through Shaded Woods

Monday, new week and time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Through Shaded Woods" is the seventh album by LUNATIC SOUL, the solo studio music project of the multi-talented creator, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mariusz Duda. As the lead singer of the hugely popular prog-rock band RIVERSIDE, LUNATIC SOUL was created in 2008 as an opportunity for Duda to explore musical territories outside the rock domain. Mariusz Duda is an incredibly creative man, with records under LUNATIC SOUL, RIVERSIDE and as solo "Mariusz Duda", five album the last two years, shows a musician who really can not sit still at all.

On "Through Shaded Woods" Duda extends his musical explorations to include dark Scandinavian and Slavic folk, referencing bands like HEILUNG or WARDRUNA. Following the heavily electronic soundscapes of previous albums "Fractured" and "Under The Fragmented Sky", "Through Shaded Woods" is completely devoid of electronics and is the first album in Duda's back catalogue on which he plays all instruments. Duda appears to have put the personal darkness that inspired his previous albums behind him, as more optimistic elements shine through in his new music.

The album "Through Shaded Woods" tells a story is about breaking free from the great beyond, about making your way to the other side, about a second chance and coming back to life and is an incredible journey from start to finish, where it's emerging into a more illuminated place musically as it progresses from the atmospheric introduction of "Navvie", folkish rhythms, chanting vocals, old-fashioned sounding instruments that creats almost hypnotic atmosphere, it’s instantly accessible. It follows up with the nine minute "The Passage", opens up in a more traditional way, finger picking acoustic guitar, neat and mournful vocals, beautifully builds up with the lowerstrings, halfway true the electric is switched on and the tune takes another turn with a more metallish sounding with vikings preparing for battle. The long walk "Through Shaded Woods" where the ancient forst breads in your neck along with the electric vocal vibrato, finger picking bassline and background whistling. Tribal rhythms opens up the melodic "Oblivion", a powerful piece where the vocal is currently beautiful. The marvelous vocals continues on the almost ten minute "Summoning Dance", finger picking guitar along with a powerful atmosphere of piano, an other string instruments, both acoustic and electric, a tune that is very progressive, catchy and danceable. The closing tune on the Vinyl and the normal CD is "The Fountain", a withdrawn beauty where the piano has the main part in a orchestral inviroment along with a mornful vocal, a perfect ending. The album is a real beauty, alot of heavy feelings, heartbreakes and dark moments. This is the most refined and richest sounding album he have done.

Sum: A dark Scandinavian and Slavic folk album at it's best. Highly Recomended.

As the title would suggest, the main color of "Through Shaded Woods" is dark green, at least for the Vinyl. In these incredibly trying times, I wish each one of us exactly that: healing, hope and freedom. The Deluxe version will give you 3 more tunes with 36 minutes more music. It was released November 13, 2020

Today's tune "Navvie", "Nav" (Polish spelling "Nawie") is the name for the Slavic underworld, and also denotes the souls of the dead, so it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to my music underworld. The "dancing souls" from the album artwork and the new videoclip make the world turn green. And green is the colour of healing, hope and freedom. Enjoy!

Kadavar - The Isolation Tapes

The three-piece psychedelic kraut rockers KADAVAR is back with their sixth record "The Isolation Tapes".

While KADAVAR’s musical development has always been about liberation and pushing the boundaries of the retro rock genre, this is yet one bigger step into a cosmos where the dogma of the classic trio approach is left behind completely. You’ll hear triple vocal harmonies and trippy guitar solos gently riding on an ocean of vintage synthesizers, the tectonic plates of drum and bass calmly pushing from down below.

"The Isolation Tapes" contains a wide palette of another creative output from KADAVAR, everything is made during the Corona Pandemic. Everything changes as the world stands still and so does rock bands all over the world, some are creative with new view on things and thier music shows that, espasially KADAVAR, where thier influences spreads of progressive rock and old kraut rock, where the distinct vocals is the same while the lyrics is well thought out, the riffing has grown to a more psychedelic comsic and progressive vibe, the music in whole has gotten to be very atmospheric, with a big krautrock feeling from the 70's, partly very PINK FLOYD alike. The album have 10 tunes with a three quater of playtime and it opens up with a five piece suite consisting of (I - "The Lonely Child", II - "I Fly Among the Stars", III - "Unnaturally Strange (?)", IV - "(I Won't Leave You) Rosi" and V - "The World is Standing Still") where the FLOYD seeps through the sound. The second half of the album mainly put their focus on a atmospheric soundscape that could be used as a soundtrack to romantic drama. The beautifully "Everything Is Changing" stands out abit with its electronic keys in the melody. Big harmonies in "The Flat Earth Theory", mellotron heavy "Peculiareality (!)" and the laidback and big ending of "Black Spring Rising - Ilgen-Nur". The album sounds excellent in my ears, it's very softish album to be KADAVER and very unexpected, but it's done with a big heart during times like this and where the heavyness has been left in the idea box for future use. In general, the guys creativity seems to have no limits.

„It all came at once, and there was no way to fight it“, says the guitarist and lead vocalist Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann. „No more touring, stay at home, put everything on hold. With all the downsides of the lock down, there were a few days when I just felt free as a bird. I was out of reach, and it was alright. It has been a while since I have felt like that actually. And I believe we all needed it. We were able to just drift along and make music of whatever came to our minds.“

Drummer Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt: „We used to have sort of a clear vision once we started making a record. And making a connection to the previous record was always part of it. This time, it was different. We had no orientation, no expectation towards ourselves, I might even say. Corona took our gravity…“

The album was released on October 23, 2020 as CD and in various Vinyl variations, including some colors with additional art prints (6 x 111 pieces each = 666 pieces) by various artists. All vinyl versions (including those without art prints) are already sold out before publication!

Today's tune "Eternal Light (We Will Be OK)" is taken from "The Isolation Tapes", enjoy!

Pure Reason Revolution - Ghosts & Typhoons

In their decade as a band, PURE REASON REVOLUTION (PRR) relentlessly innovated on every release. Their debut was a modern spin on classic prog, as accessible to fans of TOOL, PORCUPINE TREE, and MUSE as it was to PINK FLOYD fans. Amor Vincit Omnia and Hammer and Anvil took them into electronic territory, all while maintaining a common progressive rock thread. It's fitting then that "Eupnea", the long-awaited return from the band, sees them harking back to their earliest days while rolling in all of the musical experiments and experience they've gathered in the intervening years. The cinematic soundscapes, gauzy psych-prog, dark atmosphere, and synths. For some bands, this would simply be retreading old ground. For PRR this relaunch is a rebirth, producing their most confident record yet, which takes them in a new direction while weaving in the elements that endeared them to fans in the first place. Available as a Gatefold 2LP + CD (with etching on side D), Limited CD Digipak & as a digital album.

PURE REASON REVOLUTION (PRR) is a British rock group formed at the University of Westminster in 2003. Their music incorporates elements of progressive rock and electronic. Their music has been variously described as "Astral Folk" and "Progressive Rock". Rick Wakeman has given the band a favorable review. Members have a shared appreciation for the work of bands such as PINK FLOYD, PORCUPINE TREE, NIRVANA, JUSTICE, KRAFTWERK, and FLEETWOOD MAC.

PRR began life as a Reading group named THE SUNSET SOUND, which featured the Courtney brothers, Chloë Alper and, for a short while, Jim Dobson. The Courtney brothers had previously played with pop-punk guitar band GEL, which was scouted and signed by Seymour Stein, the founder of Sire. Alper used to front PERIOD PAINS, who scored a hit with an anti-SPICE GIRLS song in 1997.

The band was completed by Tom Leathes (vocals, guitar) and Bob Cooper (bass guitar). Debut single "Moving" picked up radio airplay on BBC Radio 1 (where the band was championed by alternative-music guru Steve Lamacq), XFM, and LA's KROQ.

Neal Morse - Seemingly Sincere

Neal Morse (SPOCK'S BEARD, TRANSATLANTIC) is ready to release "Sola Gratia", his new solo progressive rock concept album, on September 11, 2020. Originating from a seed planted in his mind about writing a record based on the apostle Paul, "Sola Gratia" quickly came together at the beginning of 2020. The album sees Neal working with long-time collaborators Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER), Randy George (AJALON), Eric Gillette (THE SWON BROTHERS), Bill Hubauer, and Gideon Klein.

The title "Sola Gratia" of course has echoes of Morse’s 2007 epic "Sola Scriptura", about the life of Martin Luther, but was in fact originally the result of a simple marital misunderstanding: “I was talking to my wife Cherie about debuting this new piece at Morsefest 2020 and she said she thought it would be good for me to do a solo album. However, I thought she said ‘Sola album’ and – because some of the new ideas involved Paul’s aggressive pursuit of the early Christians, I could see a link to some of the themes of persecution in ‘Sola Scriptura.’”

The music was recorded ‘virtually’ in April 2020 at the height of the Coronavirus lockdown with long term collaborators Mike Portnoy and Randy George: “It’s the first album we have ever made remotely: I sent them the basic tracks and asked if they wanted to rearrange things, but they just said ‘No, it’s great!’, so they just played to it and sent their parts back over. It wasn’t an easy way to make an album, but creating always has its challenges, no matter how you do it.”

As Morse explains, it was this process that decided that Sola Gratia was to be a Neal Morse album, rather than being credited to The Neal Morse Band: “With the Neal Morse Band, the whole band works together on the writing, and while Eric Gillette plays some guitar and Bill Hubauer has added some keyboards on this one, neither of them wrote – or is singing – on this album.

"Sola Gratia" will be released as a limited CD/DVD Digipak (featuring a ‘Making-Of’ documentary), Gatefold Transparent Sun Yellow 2LP + CD, Gatefold Black 2LP + CD, Standard CD Jewel Case, and as a Digital Album. The cover art was created by another longtime collaborator, Thomas Ewerhard.
