Thursday, time for a cover.

"The End" is an epic song by the American rock band THE DOORS. Lead singer Jim Morrison initially wrote the lyrics about his break up with his girlfriend Mary Werbelow, but it evolved through months of performances at the Whisky a Go Go into a much longer song. THE DOORS recorded a nearly 12-minute version for their self-titled debut album, which was released on January 4, 1967.

Today's version is by the Danish indie rock duo THE RAVEONETTES, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar, instruments and vocals, and Sharin Foo on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by THE EVERLY BROTHERS coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.

The Doors - Blue Sunday

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Blue Sunday" is a tune by the American rock band THE DOORS. The song is from the fifth studio album "Morrison Hotel", released on February 9, 1970 by Elektra Records. After the use of brass and string arrangements recommended by producer Paul A. Rothchild on their previous album, "The Soft Parade", THE DOORS returned to their blues-rock style and this album was largely seen as a return to form for the band. The band entered Elektra Sound Recorders in Los Angeles in November 1969 to record the album which is divided into two separately titled sides: "Hard Rock Cafe" and "Morrison Hotel". Session bassists Lonnie Mack and Ray Neapolitan featured on the album's songs.

Today's tune "Blue Sunday" is written by THE DOORS in 1965, when they were first starting out. For this album, they wanted to get back to their early sound, and felt recording this would be a good way to do it. The clips is filmed Live at Aquarius Theater "Private Rehearsal" 1969.

Jess and the Ancient Ones - The Horse and Other Weird Tales

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Third time around for JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES (JATAO) on Tune Of The Day as "Record Of The Week", the female fronted finish occult retro rock band with their latest and third release "The Horse and Other Weird Tales", an album that was released last year on Svart Records on December 1st. Busy time when it arrived, all the focus was to sort out all the other releases, so it falled behind a little. Now it has got some air time, been spinning at work, at home, in the car mixed with other new records but I always returned to it and that is a very good sign.

On "The Horse and Other Weird Tales" they continue on the same highway as they painted on "Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes", but with a mystery trip to the psychedelic side of the sixties, with a more modern view point. The album is very groovy and organic and it's produced a very old fashioned album, 9 tunes and 31 minutes, recorded and mixed together with their live sound engineer.

Jess vocals is absolutely stunning, with high brilliance she dives into the mysterious depths, swirls one on her finger so you get absolutely mesmerize and disappear into the myst. The musical partners she have are amazing to capture the timezone and with a intelligence and accessibility with a lot of variety to keep it interest all the way.

From the opening chords to first sentences in the first tune "Death Is The Doors" the path for this record is set. Intro with a 60's horror movie theme and psychedelic keyboards aka THE DOORS slowly walks to the door and unlocks it and the tune swings to a quicker melody pattern by the rhythm section, catchy and amazing sining by Jess.
"Shining" is a groovy piece, keys is still strong here, catchy chorus and very colourful guitars makes it very hard to sit still.
A groovy bass line opens up the rocker "Your Exploding Heads", still with a 60's touch and a hell of a swing.
One of the albums longest tune, just over 7 minutes "You And Eyes", starts with a powerful soft vocals by Jess and it builds up as long the journey goes, psychedelic keys with smokey distorted guitars makes this a epic piece of music.
The albums shortest tune is up next "Radio Aquarius", ticks in under 2 minutes, radio propaganda with nice background music by the band.
"Return To Hallucinate" is a trippy piece with absolutly stunning vocals performance by Jess, with total control and incredible range she masters with fearless every inch of vocal space in the tune.
"(Here Comes) The Rainbow Mouth" with a great bassline, groovy melody, catchy guitars and of course Jess.
"Minotaure", Jess again, puh, I'm totally blown away here, 60's psychedelic rock with racing key riffs and a bass riff that kills, groovy like a beast.
The album ends with the longest paper back novel "Anyway The Minds Flow" have traces of everything on the album.

The tune references J.D. Salinger’s, "The Catcher In the Rye" and includes audio recordings of Mark Chapman, the man who murdered the late Beatles, John Lennon. Mark Chapman has gone on the record stating that "The Catcher in the Rye" inspired him to kill Lennon. Chapman believed Lennon to be a “phony”, with the song “Imagine” having the line about having no possessions while he himself was a wealthy man. This is a complex subject because John Lennon came from a very meager and humble background in a poor part of Liverpool, England, and as a self-made man he understood the fight to better oneself. “Anyway The Minds Flow” discusses the parallels between reality and what is assumed, and the fine line between the truth and misinterpretation.

The summery of this album: A excellent ride into the void of 60's psychedelic occult heavy rock.

The Grand East - Movano Camerata

Monday, New week, time to introduce "Record of the Week".

This week we have an amazing blues rock album from the Netherlands.

A band that call them self THE GRAND EAST and their debut album "Movano Camerata".

"Movano Camerata" is a pretty varied album, but the basics is classic blues rock and influences that range from psychedelic mysticism from THE DOORS to Southern THE CULT rock, Hill Billy Country and New Orleans Soul to freaking madness of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. The music is raw with a big heart, the soulful intensity will totally blind you. The album opener "Kiss The Devil" is like a bowling ball, runs with straight focus and big goal true the newly oiled lane before your legs go like ninepins in a strike. "Rabbits & Children" is an beauty, nicely guitar playing with a soulful "Ian Astbury" vocals, at times it dropps it's foothold and flies like a swarm of bees. "Frogs" is a more definite song, with a clear direct vocal character. "Salt Water Love pt 1" is a classic blues stomper. "Troubled Mind" is another tune to the more classic old school blues, where the vocals hymns true the tune, a real beauty. "Water" sounds almost like THE DOORS, really cool tune where the bass lines gets it shine of light. "Dark Man" continues on the path of THE DOORS. "Dreaming" is more back to the blues, a jam with a distinct hammond sound, soulful vocals. "Golden Watch" could been picked from Twin Peaks, great horns that fills out the melody. "Wanna Have Some Fun", hammond, guitars and bluesy drums is the main in this more straight forward tune. The album closes with bluesy folkish "Walk Those Pretty Legs"

The Cuckoos - Stranger In Your Eyes

The psychedelic rock/blues band from Austin Texas named THE CUCKOOS have released two tracks from the upcoming debut album, set to release later on this month. The album consists of 10 original songs.

The band's unique sound combines psychedelic rock from the 60s and 70s with a modern twist. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas at the renowned Arlyn Studios, engineered by Jacob Sciba, and mastered by Howie Weinberg.

Pagan's Mind - Hallo Spaceboy

Today is Thetania birthday and of course we celebrate that with a tune of a band she loves, hurrah hurrah.

From Skien, Norway we find one of Thetanias favourite progressive metal heads PAGANS MIND. A band that have released five studio albums, and the current line-up is composed of founding members only, kinda impressive I must say.

Todays tune "Hallo Spaceboy" is taken from the fourth album "God's Equation", released on November 9, 2007. The tune was co-written by David Bowie and Brian Eno. Bowie wrote the song in mostly-improvised sessions with his band in 1995, and intentionally wrote it with a NINE INCH NAILS-like vibe. Of the track, Bowie said "I adore that track. In my mind, it was like Jim Morrison meets industrial. When I heard it back, I thought, 'Fuck me. It's like metal DOORS.' It's an extraordinary sound."

Heat - Daymare

Time to roll back some time, has been much focus on the band playing music in the present time, feel like soiling life a little bit. So some 70s hard rock will be todays focus, a german band that goes under the name "Heat"

Heat, sounds heavy, much like Sabbath topped by little Doors sprinkles and Rush candels. The songs have good dynamics with multiple tempo changes backed by breaks and solos.

It is 2012 and they´re here to stay with an energetic Blues-drenched mixture of early Sabbath, Zeppelin, Jerusalem, whatever... Pull a name from your Classic Hard Rock collection, they have it all. The real deal. Hats off to Roy Harper.

Conclusion: Fans of hard rock 70 should have this record, at least in their collection.

Todays tune "Daymare" is filled with deep-tuned guitars, bright cymbals, thumping bass and a distinctive voice that sounds completely after Ozzy. Taken from the self titled debut, released 28 September 2012. Recorded in 2012 at the Big Snuff Studio in Berlin, recorded, mixed and mastered by Richard Behrens.

The Doors - Peace Frog

Todays Sunday's classic is from the classic band "The Doors" who were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, California, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger.

Todays tune "Peace Frog" is a song which appears on the album Morrison Hotel. It was released on vinyl in February 1970 by Elektra/Asylum Records and produced by Paul Rothchild. It has a fairly short running time of 2:50 and blends seamlessly into the next track on the album, "Blue Sunday", making it easy for radio stations to play the two songs consecutively. The lyrics were adapted from a couple of Morrison's poems, one being entitled "Abortion Stories".

Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger came up with the guitar riff. The lyrics were based on two of Jim Morrison's poems, one called "Abortion Stories," which is where the bloody images came from.

The lyrics about the Indians refer to an auto accident involving a group of Indians that Morrison's family came across on the highway. Morrison, who was a child at the time, felt that the ghosts of the Indians took up residence in his soul. This scene is portrayed at the beginning of Oliver Stone's movie, The Doors.

The lyric "Blood in the streets of the town of Chicago" refers to the 1968 democratic convention. The lyric "Blood in the streets of the town of New Haven" refers to Morrison's arrest in New Haven in 1967. From the stage, the enraged singer explained that he was with a girl before the show, and, "We started talking and we wanted some privacy and so went into this little show room. We weren't doing anything. You know, just standing there talking, and then this little man in a little blue suit and a little blue cap came in there. He said 'Whatcha doin' there?' 'Nothin'.' But he didn't go away, he stood there and then he reached round behind him and brought out this little black can of something. It looked like shaving cream. And then he sprayed it in my eyes. I was blinded for about 30 minutes."

At this point, 3 police officers came onstage and arrested Morrison for breach of the peace, giving an indecent and immoral exhibition and resisting arrest. He managed to strike a crucifixion pose before he was taken away, and some audience members fought with cops.

Rival Sons - Wild Animal

 

Time for presenting this week's album. Today's band originates from USA, the L.A. quartet Rival Sons made a big splash in 2011 with their breakthrough album, Pressure & Time.

Head Down is their latest release. Recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb (Jamie Johnson, Shooter Jennings) and engineer Vance Powell (The White Stripes, Kings of Leon). Head Down takes the band’s electrifying blend of Led Zeppelin, Free, The Doors and a many others to exhilarating new heights.

Rival Sons really possess the secret magic ingredient to mix the classic hard rock and progressive blues of the 60s and 70s, genuine soul and a dusty groove. Head Down really covers half a century of classic rock and is much more sprawling than their previous album, which had a more straighter approach.

Jay Buchannan’s vocals dance around Scott Holiday’s blues spiked riffs, Robin Everhart’s basslines adds the landscape of soul. Mike Miley drumming is adding the ground in a amazing way.

Head Down is a brilliant album, just go but it!

The band that really put their retro-rock name on the map, constantly touring has created a large fan base, gigs are set up on larger and larger places every time and is almost always sold out. A band that I have seen 3-4 times already and I am amazed every time by their presence and emotion they are spreading at a gig. Their live appearance is insanely good and the guys are so in tune with each other that you get goose bumps. I await their upcoming gig with excitement. That the boys then are super nice private is a nice bonus!

The Flying Eyes - Overboard

From Baltimore, Maryland, USA, The Flying Eyes. They play a heavy psychedelic folk rock deeply rooted in the late 1960's. Since forming in 2007, they have opened for such renowned artists as The Raveonettes, The Black Angels, Dead Meadow, Witch and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys (during SXSW 2009).

The Flying Eyes also produce a grass-roots music festival called "Farm Fest" in Manchester, Maryland. They co-headlined Farm Fest 2010 with The Vandelles and An Albatross, drawing over 600 people to the Carney Family Farm.

In November of 2009, The Flying Eyes released a compilation of their two EPs, "Bad Blood" and "Winter", on German label Trip in Time/World in Sound Records. In the summer of 2010 they supported the album with a six week European tour, notably sharing the main stage of the Burg Herzberg Festival in Germany with legends Hawkwind and Jeff Beck.

New Album "Done So Wrong" coming March 18th 2011 on Trip in Time.

You can hear the characteristics of The Doors and Steppenwolf, but with its own identity. A major strength of the band, is that they hold an striking talent of writing exciting and powerful songs. Will Kelly's dark and exceptional voice (reminiscent of Jim Morrison) leaves his mark on the songs, a powerful component that falls in very well with the other talented musicians who are in the band.

I found it!!!!!!!
The band that plays good music with a touch of the 70´s but not really :) hehe.
This is awesome, totally freckin´great.

It´ll get ure toughts to Led Zeppelin and other goodies but with a new coat :)

Who are they??
Well, they are a Blues/rock band from Los Angeles, US.
Line-up: Lead Vocals: Jay Buchanan, Guitar: Scott Holiday, Bass: Robin Everhart Drums: Mike Miley History.
They were formed in 2008.

Michael Duncan on Rock Edition did an interview with Jay in april:
"Most of my idols are blues guys. This is the first rock ‘n’ roll band that I’ve ever been in. I never had an appetite to play rock ‘n’ roll. I grew up on the blues and soul music. Honestly, I always thought rock ‘n’ roll and these rock bands — the music was good — but when it came down to it so much of it seemed like foolish posturing and not very honest, except for just a few bands. You get into Led Zeppelin growing up — who doesn’t love Led Zeppelin? Or The Doors. But even with Led Zeppelin it’s like, “Aw, there’s faggy Robert Plant setting white doves free from the stage.”

Then you got Jim Morrison putting out shitty poetry and acting like he’s getting shot on stage. Tone it down, man. You know, it always goes over that line, but it has to go over that line if it’s going to ride the edge. So, I get it. I like true rock, like real honest stuff, where you go back to like Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Listen to “Not Fade Away” — there’s ghosts coming off of that vinyl. You can picture, smell and feel these kids sweating it out in this one room studio in Lubbock, Texas. If you listen to what The Jeff Beck Group did on the ‘Truth’ album, that’s serious shit — it’s really good! They were a bunch of young dudes hopped up on the blues and just swinging as hard as they could. Yeah, man. There’s a lot of good rock that’s been made."

They will release their debut album worldwide entitled “Pressure & Time” in June 2011.
