Slayer - Pride In Prejudice

On June 6th, Hessians worldwide come together to do something upon which we can all agree - listening to SLAYER and in Sweden, we celebrate the National day along with SLAYER :)

International Day of SLAYER is celebrated annually on June 6th. This year marks the 18th annual International Day of Slayer.

Today's tune "Pride In Prejudice" is a piece taken from the twelfth and final studio album "Repentless" It was released on September 11, 2015, and is the band's only album recorded without Jeff Hanneman, who died from liver cirrhosis in 2013. Gary Holt replaces Hanneman as a guitarist. Drummer Paul Bostaph also makes his first appearance on a SLAYER album since 2001's "God Hates Us All". It is also the only one the band released on Nuclear Blast and was produced by Terry Date, replacing Rick Rubin after twenty-nine years and nine studio albums as their producer or executive producer. The six-year gap between World Painted Blood and Repentless was the longest between two SLAYER albums in their career. This would also be the band's final studio album before embarking on a farewell tour in 2018–2019 and eventually disbanding.

Three singles were released from the album: "Repentless," "You Against You" and "Pride In Prejudice".

"Pride In Prejudice" was the last song that SLAYER guitarist Kerry King put together musically for "Repentless". "There were like six or eight other songs already done with keeper drums, keeper guitars, and keeper bass," he told Artist Direct. "There were no leads or vocals because I had just gotten done writing music. 'Pride' was the last one I made up that actually made the record. I was going to save that for the next record because I was just done working at that point. Tom (Araya, vocals) wanted to work on it and I said, 'Sure man, knock yourself out.' He basically did the vocals on his own."

"That clean intro, I was just waiting for Paul (Bostaph drums) to come back inside," King continued. "I think he was outside on the phone at rehearsal. I was just d--king around on guitar playing that clean part. He asked, 'What's that?' I said, 'I don't know. I just made it up." That's how simple things become SLAYER songs. It's remember it, record it on something, and come back to it. That song's 'BLACK SABBATH Heavy.' That's what I call it, because it's just heavy as f--k."

"Tom had most of those lyrics for 20 years," he added. "I remember he wrote them for Divine Intervention. They never panned out. They show up here on this song. Yeah, it's a new record, but that s--t's 20-years-old." The video was directed by BJ McDonnell, who previously worked with Slayer on their "Repentless" and "You Against You" clips. The third of a trilogy, the gory clip shows the prisoner, played by Jason Trost, being forced to make a life-or-death choice in a basement filled with Nazi imagery.

"I'm particularly excited about this third video," said McDonnell, "because we played with stylistic differences with the trilogy. Where one video plays like an action film, this third one is more of a dramatic piece. The final story takes us into a world that is especially sinister in tone, with the dark and the light colliding. The conclusion is visually cinematic and harsh, with SLAYER conducting us through it all with "Pride In Prejudice".

Enjoy!

Body Count - Raining Blood

Magic Thursday is here, time to dig up a Cover that rocks.

"Raining Blood" is a song by the American thrash metal band SLAYER. Written by Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King for the 1986 studio album "Reign in Blood", the song's religious concept is about overthrowing Heaven.

The song is four minutes and fourteen seconds in duration. It ends with a minute of rain sound effects. It's a "classic" metal tune and it is noted by fans as one of SLAYERs most popular songs. As an almost permanent addition to their live sets, both Hanneman and King acknowledged it as their favorite song to play live. Many of SLAYERs live performances of the song have been captured on the band's live albums and also multi-band compilation albums including MTV2 Headbangers Ball.

There have been many appearances of the song in the media and elsewhere, including the South Park episode "Die Hippie, Die", and the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, where it is considered difficult to play.

Many artists have made a cover of the tune during the years, like the magific version by Tori Amos, it has also been covered by MALEVOLENT CREATION, HAVOK, Natalie Prass, BODY COUNT, VADER, DIECAST, QUIET COMPANY, REGGIE AND THE FULL EFFECT and Erik Hinds, who covered the entire Reign in Blood album on a "H'arpeggione". The guitar riffs from "Raining Blood" and "Mandatory Suicide" were sampled by rapper LIL JON in the song "Stop Fuckin Wit' Me" from the 2004 album "Crunk Juice". It was Rick Rubin's only collaboration with LIL JON on the record. Jon wanted to create a "black version" of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES' song "Institutionalized". The New Zealand drum and bass group CONCORD DAWN produced a drum and bass cover version on their album "Uprising", on which they partially sample the famous opening riff of the song.

Today's version is the American heavy metal BODY COUNT, released on the sixth studio album "Bloodlust", enjoy!

Slayer - Angel Of Death

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman. They detail the Nazi physician Josef Mengele's human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

Although the lyrics describe Mengele's abuses rather than endorsing them, "Angel of Death" led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism against the band, which they vigorously denied but which followed them throughout their early career. Despite the controversy and the resulting delay in the release of "Reign in Blood", the song remains a live favourite and has appeared on all of SLAYERs live albums.

The song has been described as highly influential in the development of thrash metal or speed metal, and is highly regarded by some critics; AllMusic's Steve Huey called it a classic and the album "the pinnacle of speed metal". The half-time riff was sampled by PUBLIC ENEMY in their 1988 song "She Watch Channel Zero?!."

Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die

Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

The show at Hovet with SLAYER was a pure thrash metal fest, 3 great support acts like LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY as you surely notice already, that I could not resist playing them all here.

SLAYERs show is the far best I have ever seen and I believe I have seen them more than 10 times over all these years. SLAYERs show at Hovet is the best live performance of the year by far. But in the other hand I have missed many because of to much work and when I day off comes I prefer to relax and rest.

The setlist of SLAYER was the regular one, playing the same tunes at every stop on this tour. The pyro was pure magic, great work Pyrotek! Nice to work with you guys again.

On December 2, 2018, Holt announced that he would not perform the remainder of the band's European tour to be with his dying father. Former MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel would fill in for him as a result. Two days to learn all the riff, amazing, as he pulled it off terrific.

The show ends with standing ovations for almost 10 minutes when Tom Araya stands still in front of the audience and receiving cheers and applause without adversity, he moves slowly along the stage edge and sucks in the cheers, he is the happiest man at this moment, he ends everything by reading a note in Swedish saying ”Jag kommer sakna er alla” (I will miss all of you), so powerful and heartbreaking.

And all I can say is that we will miss you SLAYER!

Setlist from the show at Hovet.

Here is a classic live clip.

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

The official music video for the album's third single, "Overlord", premiered on June 30, 2015 "Overlord", the new Jorge Torres-Torres-directed video from Richmond, Virginia-based metallers LAMB OF GOD, can be seen below.

Obituary - Redneck Stomp

Holy Moses, my head is thrashed. What an evening at Hovet, four strong bands on one stage, 3 of them supporting the farewell of the classic thrashers' SLAYER.

The first support band was the American death metal legends OBITUARY, early slot but almost half full venue even if they started an hour after doors. 30 minutes set made them play the best from their catalogue.

OBITUARY started their set with their lovely instrumental "Redneck Stomp", a tune taken from the sixth album "Frozen In Time". It was released on July 12, 2005, and was the band's first album in eight years since 1997's "Back from the Dead", and the last to feature guitarist Allen West.

OBITUARY setlist from Hovet, Sweden December 5th.

I'm in Pain

Dead Cross - Seizure and Desist

DEAD CROSS are an American hardcore punk project formed in Southern California. The band consists of guitarist Michael Crain (RETOX, FESTOIVAL OF DEAD DEER), bassist Justin Pearson (THE LOCUST, HEAD WOUND CITY and RETOX), drummer Dave Lombardo (SLAYER/SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and FANTOMAS) and vocalist Mike Patton (currently of FAITH NO MORE and FANTOMAS).

DEAD CROSS released their self-titled debut album last year, which was followed by a five-week trek across North America including a spot at Riot Fest. Rolling Stone said the album contains “10 charging, head-spinning ragers,” Revolver dubbed it a “28-minute blitzkrieg” and the LA Weekly proclaimed: “The band’s self-titled debut is a 28-minute burst of pure punk force, and is easily the most vitriolic material that either Lombardo or Patton has been involved with in many years.”

The CD and LP comes in glow-in-the-dark packaging with the vinyl available in Clear/Red/Black Swirl and limited edition metallic gold.

Today's tune "Seizure and Desist" taken from the selftitled debut album. Video directed and animated by Eric Livingston  Enjoy!

Metal Allegiance - We Rock

"We Rock" is a classic rocker taken from the second studio album "The Last In Line" by the American heavy metal band Dio, released on July 2, 1984.

The song is a really classic among rockers and many cover versions have been made. The all-star metal band METAL ALLEGIANCE is one of them, a great cover from a great gang of musicans and singers. The video consisting of a rotating cast of musicians like Mark Osegueda, Chris Jericho, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Alissa White-Gluz, Chuck Billy and Steve "Zetro" Souza, Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums: Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Andreas Kisser, Phil Demmel & Gary Holt.

Brought together by METAL ALLEGIANCE principal partner Mark Menghi, the project's original material came together from the creative minds of David Ellefson of MEGADETH, Mike Portnoy of THE WINERY DOGS, and Alex Skolnick from TESTAMENT, alongside Menghi. The four writers then reached out through their metal Rolodexes to a diverse lineup of performers, each adding their own personal musical stamp to the collection of nine original songs.

Today's tune "We Rock" is taken from the self-titled debut by METAL ALLEGIANCE, enjoy!

Slayer - Decade Of Aggression

Decade of Aggression is a double live album by SLAYER, released on October 22, 1991 through Def American Records (later renamed to American Recordings) and produced by Rick Rubin. The album was recorded in three separate places on three separate dates. Its working title was "Decade of Decadence" until MÖTLEY CRUE registered the name. Three of the album's tracks were included in the box set "Soundtrack to the Apocalypse".

While touring on the "Clash of the Titans" tour to promote the 1990 studio album "Seasons in the Abyss", separate sections of the "Decade of Aggression" album were recorded on October 14, 1990, March 8, 1991, and July 13, 1991, however, AllMusic said that Rick Rubin's production "seems to be in terms of shaping the live sound to make it sound like this is all one gig."

“The main record was one and then we had other songs that we played a different night that we added to the package, and that was our first live experience, the first anyone could have SLAYER live unless it was a tape-trading kind of thing from way back when. So it was kinda cool, you know, we were proud of it”.
— Kerry King

The album does not feature an overdub of guitars. In The Rough Guide To Rock, it was said to be "intense" and "put studio favorites through the live shredder in a brutal and definitive manner." Most of the tracks were a selection from "South of Heaven", "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss". The album's total duration is one hour, twenty-five minutes, and twenty-eight seconds (85:28). Three of the album's tracks were included in the box set "Soundtrack to the Apocalypse".

The ultimate live album in the early history of the "Big 4" in american thrash. This is good old SLAYER. Old school thrash, kick ass. Overall it's fast deadly rhythms, with some aggressive vocals and intense drumming in one intense package that is a blast.

Today's tune "Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by SLAYER guitarist, Jeff Hanneman and are based on Nazi physician Josef Mengele, who conducted human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. "Angel of Death" led to the band facing accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism throughout their career.

Despite the controversy surrounding the song and its contribution to the delay in the release of Reign in Blood, "Angel of Death" is featured on all of SLAYERs live albums and DVDs and has appeared in several movies. The song was well received by critics; Steve Huey of AllMusic described it as a "classic".

Slayer - You Against You

In SLAYERs song "You Against You" vocalist Tom Araya screams "Your perfect world is ending this day, So what? I wouldn't have it any other way." And so, from the very first frame of the band's "You Against You" music video, the gore, the violence, the projectile-blood-spewing and the carnage begins and just never ends.

"You Against You" is the prequel to "Repentless," Slayer's brutal 2015 video filmed at an L.A. prison that has logged nearly 7.5 million YouTube views. Like "Repentless," "You Against You" was directed by BJ McDonnell, stars Jason Trost "(Hatchet III") as Wyatt, the eyepatched rebel inmate, and tells the story of the circumstances that led to Wyatt's erroneous arrest and imprisonment.

SLAYERs performance of "You Against You" was shot deep in the heart of California's Mojave desert earlier this year in a graveyard of jets, airliners, and helicopters.

“After the ‘Repentless’ video,” said Slayer’s Tom Araya, “BJ delivers with ‘You Against You.’ Fucking awesome!!!”

Today's tune "You Against You" is taken from the 12th studio album "Repentless". Video is Directed By BJ McDonnell, Produced By Felissa Rose, Co produced by Harrison Smith and Christian Ackerman, Action Producer Don Lee, Director Of Photography Eric Leach, Editor Ed Marx, Makeup FX by Alterian (Tony Gardner and Adrienne Lynn)

Babymetal - Megitsune

Japan, is an interesting country, with their history, customs, cuisine and music. There are many great music acts originated from Japan, including all the music styles, Japan has created a lot of "strange" things in our eyes / ears, but are huge over there.

Personally, I think it can be fun with this, but I am simply too old to go into this! Or what do you say? Today's band is one of the newer ones that is Huge in Japan, and is beginning to spread across the world.

BABYMETAL was formed in 2010. Their major debut single “ Ijme, dame, zettai" along with 2nd single “Megistune" both ranked in the Top 10 Oricon chart in Japan. In March 2014, they took to the stage of Nippon Budokan for a 2-Days gig making them the youngest female act to ever perform there. Their 1st studio album BAYBMETAL made it into the US Billboard chart. In summer of the same year, they embarked on their first World Tour, performing on the Main Stage at UK’s prodigious festival Sonisphere Festival 2014 in front of 65,000 festival goers, and supporting Lady Gaga on her “ArtRave: The Artpop Ball” 2014 Tour. In fall they were back for additional headline shows in Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City and O2 Academy Brixton, London. In January 2015, they headlined a show at the 20,000 capacities Saitama Super Arena, and in June 2015, they headlined a show at the 25,000 capacities Makuhari Messe. In summer of 2015, BABYMETAL received awards from prominent UK music magazines “Kerrang!” and “METAL HAMMER”. They then performed in front of a staggering 90,000 people at the prestigious Reading and Leeds Festival in August. This December, BABYMETAL are to take the stage again for 2 consecutive days at Japan’s Yokohama Arena pulling a total of 26,000 people before returning to the UK in April 2016 to headline London’s The SSE Arena, Wembley. Unearth - The Swarm

From the small town "Winthrop" in Massachusetts we find the metalcore dudes UNEARTH.

After an awe-inspiring 16 years of blazing trails and dominating stages, UNEARTH is now institutionalized as a relentless force in heavy metal, standing the test of time with consistently triumphant creative output, tireless road warrior resilience, Blue Collar style workmanship and a resolute determination to deliver the goods.

Like SLAYER, CANNIBAL CORPSE, TESTAMENT and ANTHRAX before them, UNEARTH emerged as part of a burgeoning revolution in heavy music but continued to maintain their relevance and mastery of their craft. They’ve resisted and prevailed against changing trends, subcultural fashions and the way music is obtained and distributed with their credibility, integrity and unique persona intact.

The men of UNEARTH – longtime members Trevor Phipps (vocals), Buz McGrath and Ken Susi (guitars), John “Slo” Maggard (bass)– are proven “lifers.” In just a couple of short years, drummer Nick Pierce has proven his commitment as well. They have put the furtherance of uncompromising heavy music at the forefront of their career goals. UNEARTH perseveres, conquers and continues to achieve

"Even after all this time, it’s still clear that the legacy of UNEARTH continues to reign supreme in metalcore."

Todays tune "The Swarm" taken from the album "Watchers of Rule". The album is produced and mixed by Mark Lewis (WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER), this marks the band's six full length LP in their decorated sixteen year tenure. This markes the first album that does not feature long time bassist John Maggard, also the first album to feature Nick Pierce on drums. Guest on the album is Mark Morton from LAMB OF GOD.
