Kiss - Creatures Of The Night

Time to present album number three out of ten of the assignments we got. "Choosing 10 vinyl albums that greatly influenced my taste". One album per day, 10 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. Every day I ask someone else to do the same." Throwing the ball at some nice figure at the social media Facebook.

"Creatures Of The Night" by American rock band KISS did a big change for me, it was the first record I got, scary dudes with face paint and stage outfits from a other dimension. The Starchild (Stanley) with a catchy vocal, the Demon (Simmons) with his long tongue and bloody face, the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley) cruel guitar player with riffs you never heard before, and the Catman (Criss) a really cool drummer. A gang that you would love as a kid so the room got decorated with posters of the band.

"Creatures Of The Night", it's the 10th studio album by American rock band KISS, released in 1982. It was the band's last for Casablanca Records, the only label for which KISS had recorded up to that point. The album was dedicated to the memory of Casablanca founder and early KISS supporter Neil Bogart, who had died of cancer during the recording sessions. It is also the band's last album recorded with Ace Frehley credited as an official member and their first album with Vinnie Vincent as the initially-uncredited lead guitarist (Vincent would later be credited but not featured on the cover of the 1985 reissue of the album). It was also Kiss' last album to feature the band with their trademark makeup until "Psycho Circus" was released.

My guitar hero back then got to be Ace Frehley, i thought the solos was awesome and he looked so cool on all the pictures that I framed my wall with, found out later that he didn't even play on this album...haha I got fooled.

Today's tune is one of the lost gems KISS didn't include in the Kissology series. With Ace on guitar (for the last time) KISS played Creatures of the Night in lip-sync several times during their promotional TV tour in Europe.

Kiss - Rock & Roll All Nite

Sunday, time for a classic.

This weekend it was time for the annual Sweden Rock Festival with a pretty fun line up. KISS, DEF LEPPARD, SLAYER, ZZ TOP, SAXON, RAINBOW, TENACIOUS D, DREAM THEATER among others. I'm happy that I got the question to come back to do some Pyro work. The main band was KISS, it was Paul and me that got the trust from the german pyro firm FFP. Fun and long day along with powder and bombs. The result ended up to be prefect except for the night mist that took over the sky.

Today's tune and the final tune of the evening was "Rock & Roll All Nite", originally released on their 1975 album "Dressed To Kill". It was released as the A-side of their fifth single, with the album track "Getaway". "Rock and Roll All Nite" became KISS's signature song and has served as the group's closing concert number in almost every concert since 1976.

"The End of the Road World Tour" is the ongoing final concert tour by the American rock band Kiss. The tour began on January 31, 2019 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

Enjoy the clip from the show and the original video.

Vinnie Vincent Invasion - Love Kills

Sunday, time for a classic.

Vinnie Vincent has been a lost soul for a very long time since he quit working for KISS and his solo project Vinne Vincent Invasion, now he reveals him self and did his first public performance in over 20 years!

Vinnie Vincent is best-known for having been a member of the band KISS, when he was hired to replace Ace Frehley, but he was in several bands before that. The Vinnie Vincent Invasion was formed by him in 1984. This is the group's best remembered song, and it's mainly notable for being the theme song for the motion picture Nightmare On Elm Street 4, which got it air time on MTV. The lyrics compare the end of a love to dying.

Today’s tune "Love Kills” is taken from the second and final studio album "All Systems Go”, released on May 17, 1988. All Systems Go featured new vocalist Mark Slaughter, who replaced Robert Fleischman. The band toured in support for the album, headlining small clubs, but broke up after the completion of the tour at the end of August 1988. The album features Yngwie Malmsteen's vocalist Jeff Scott Soto on backing vocals.

This was filmed January 21, 2018. This was the last day for him in Atlanta at the Atlanta Expo Hall.

Here some jamming with Robert Fleischman!

The Night Flight Orchestra - Amber Galactic

Monday, New Week! Time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Amber Galactic", THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRAs (NFO), third album was released on 19 May 2017.

Suddenly my speakers streams classic melodic rock pop with a light glamdisco feeling, my smile gets bigger and I find my self dancing in the living room. Think T.REX, KISS, TOTO, REO SPEEDWAGON and some glittery guitar and the bulky 70s and 80s effects, there you have "Amber Galactic", an totally amazing album.

"Amber Galactic" is a very fun record to play, it's old but very modern. It's very well made, both song and lyrics wise, the production have a very good quality.

The album kicks of with the galloping opener "Midnight Flyer", a real catchy killer tune and the pumping "Star Of Rio", catchy verses and choruses of "Gemini", amazing start of the album. The we get a cool 80's bass line on "Jennie", mid-tempo monster filler like "Josephine" to the classic 80's soundtrack rock "Something Mysterious". The grooving KISS alike "Domino" the up tempo dueling tune "Space Whisperer" to the disco beat in "Saturn in Velvet"

Sum:

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA is here to set you free, to invite you to enjoy music in whatever form it is presented. For this particular journey, we’d like you to follow us into space, but who knows where we’ll go next! After entering the NFO universe, you won’t ever be the same!”

The band consist of members of SOILWORK (Singer Björn Strid), ARCH ENEMY (Bassplayer Sharlee D'Angelo) and MEAN STREAK (Guitarist David Andersson and Drummer Jonas Källsbäck) – bands who have a much heavier sound than NFO!

Today’s tune "Gemini" from THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA's third album, Amber Galactic, out May 19th.

Kiss - Psycho Circus

Sunday, time for a classic.

Yesterday did Stockholm get a visit from KISS, that played on Tele2 Arena.

More dates below

Today's tune "Psycho Circus" is a song by the American hard rock band KISS. It is the title track from the 1998 album with the same name. The B-side is the non-album track "In Your Face", a song written by bassist Gene Simmons and sung by KISS guitarist/vocalist Ace Frehley.

"Psycho Circus" was written by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley and Curt Cuomo specifically to fit the theme of the Psycho Circus Tour and album. According to producer Bruce Fairbairn, "We didn't have an opener for the record. We didn't have anything that was going to start things off. And [Paul] just looked at me and said, 'check this. This is it...' We both sat there and looked at each other and started to laugh. Because that was it"

Four different versions of the single exist, featuring a different member of the band pictured on the cover.

The song would open sets for the band on the Psycho Circus Tour to support the album, and was performed on KISS live album "KISS Symphony: Alive IV in 2003". "Psycho Circus" returned to setlist during the 2010s, on both the Monster World Tour and The KISS 40th Anniversary World Tour.

"Psycho Circus" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Hard Rock Performance, losing out to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's "Most High".

A music video was made to promote the single, which was made in the same 3-D theme as the album and tour, and was directed by James J. Hurlburt and produced by Doc McGhee and Eddie Vasker. Although the video was generally ignored by MTV, it won a 1998 Metal Edge Readers' Choice Award for Video of the Year.

To compensate for the lack of MTV airplay the band released the video on VHS complete with 3-D glasses. In addition to "Psycho Circus" the included CD single features Ace Frehley's "In Your Face", a song not available elsewhere in North America.

The video was certified Platinum in the US.

The video was the first by the band since the video for "I Love It Loud" to feature the band wearing their famous makeup.

"Psycho Circus" is the 18th studio album by American rock band KISS. The album features the original four members back together and in full make-up. Some pressings featured a lenticular cover that alternates between a black KISS logo and the album title with pictures of a clown and the band members, while the Japan initial first pressing featured a pop-up cover which had three foam spring-loaded panels of a clown face and two others with band members faces that popped out when the doors were opened. "You Wanted the Best" is the only KISS song in which lead vocals are shared by the entire lineup.

Ace Frehley - Fire And Water

“Fire & Water” is pretty new video from Ace Frehley's latest release "Origins, Vol. 1", this is a covers album, released on April 13, 2016 in Japan and April 15 in the United States.

The album features guest appearances from Slash, Lita Ford, John 5, Mike McCready, and Frehley's former KISS bandmate Paul Stanley.

In addition to covers of tracks by CREAM and THIN LIZZY, Origins, Vol. 1 features newly-recorded versions of several KISS songs which were written but not sung by Frehley, such as "Cold Gin" and "Parasite", as well as a new version of the KISS song "Rock and Roll Hell" which he did not perform on as he was leaving the band at the time.

On the track "Wild Thing", Ace Frehley plays the opening guitar riff while Lita Ford performs all the song's guitar solos.

In a 2016 interview with The Pods & Sods Network, Ace describes other songs that were considered, recorded and plans for Origins, Vol. 2

Today's tune "Fire and Water" (featuring Paul Stanley), is a cover of FREE, written by Andy Fraser & Paul Rodgers

Kiss - Alive!

Alive! is the first live album, and fourth overall, by American heavy metal band KISS. It is considered to be their breakthrough and a landmark for live albums. Released on September 10, 1975, the double-lp set contains live versions of selected tracks from their first three studio albums, "Kiss", "Hotter Than Hell" and "Dressed to Kill". It was recorded from concerts in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; Wildwood, New Jersey; and Davenport, Iowa.

Despite their reputation and success as a live act, which emphasized theatrics as much as it did music, their notoriety did not translate to increased record sales. Fans told the band that their albums were not capturing how the band sounded live, so the band decided to release a live album. KISS was essentially surviving on then-manager Bill Aucoin's American Express card. Complicating matters was the fact that their label, Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records, was having financial difficulties of its own stemming from a major misstep. The label had released a double album of Johnny Carson monologues earlier in the year. However, the album was a flop, but Casablanca had pressed millions of copies in anticipation of it being a strong seller.

Casablanca, however, did think a KISS live album would be a respectable seller. The album outperformed expectations as it was certified gold, becoming both KISS and Casablanca's first top 10 album. Years later, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons recounted that in the weeks after the release, they saw a significant increase in concert attendance. In the documentary KISS: X-treme Close Up, Stanley remembers that at one particular show in Dayton, Ohio, "the place was packed; I mean you couldn't have gotten another person in with a shoehorn".

The album's title was an homage to the 1972 live album Slade Alive! from the English rock group SLADE, a band that heavily influenced KISS.

There has been considerable debate as to how much use was made of studio overdubs. In his autobiography KISS and Make-Up, Simmons stated that very little corrective work was done in the studio and that most of the studio time was devoted strictly to mixing down the multi-track recordings. He also emphasized that KISS could not have done extensive overdubbing even if they had wanted to; thanks in no small part to the Johnny Carson album fiasco, the extremely meager budget allotted to the band simply would not allow it.

According to Dale Sherman's book Black Diamond and Goldmine magazine, in the early 1990s, Eddie Kramer stated there were a few overdubs to correct the most obvious mistakes: strings breaking or off-key notes, for instance. However, in recent years, Kramer has stated that the only original live recording on the album is Peter Criss' drum tracks. Stanley has noted that there is a bass mistake in the choruses of "C'mon and Love Me". He has also made comments that even though there have been live albums recorded later that make Alive! sound like it was recorded in a washroom, he has no qualms about it. Criss has also claimed, in his 2012 autobiography Makeup to Breakup, that the only original live recordings on the album were his drum tracks.

During the program Classic Albums, the band members all stated that while many changes had been made, such as overdubbing vocals and mixing together various crowd sounds to get a more amplified sense of the "live" sound, they considered the changes minor. In particular, they stated that they only altered the noise of the crowd to better capture the feel of the actual performances, since the raw recordings only dimly picked up the audience. They also stated that they had difficulties capturing vocals due to the natural jumps, dancing, and other stage activities.

Alive! was actually the first Hard rock "Live" album that I bought when I was a kid long time ago. Ace was my star icon and I remember when I was playing air guitar to Ace riffs, magic times :)

Alive! have been played more than I could ever count, the copy is still in my collection, but it's so worn out that I couln't get a dollar for it. "Alive! remains KISS' greatest Live album ever" even if I do like Alive II aswell, but there is so much innocent, rawer sound on this one, and not forget all the memories that this Live recording have even if it seem like a joke, mainly because it contains every arena rock cliche in the book it's still one of the biggest highlights in my youth concerning the band KISS.

Alive! contains all the biggest tune from the first 3 records like "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Deuce", "Strutter", "Firehouse", "Parasite", "She", "100,000 Years", "Black Diamond" and "Cold Gin"

Sum: An essential addition to any rock collection.

Today's tune "Black Diamond", one of my favorites on the album is a song written by rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley. "Black Diamond" was written almost exactly as it is, he said, "except that the riff wasn't there; Gene Simmons brought that part in… It's all about arrangement and embellishment. That's what you're supposed to do in a band: come in and add something. But that doesn't mean you wrote the song."

The song is the closing track on the band's eponymous first album, KISS, released in 1974. It begins with an acoustic opening sung by Stanley before a furious riff enters, accompanied by Peter Criss on lead vocals. It fades out with Ace Frehley's solo, in a sort of studio trick. The song is also characterized by its noticeable use of chorus, and its ending. The taped studio version was slowed down almost to a standstill. The live version is usually sped up in tempo, combined with stage pyrotechnics and a rising drum platform.

The band would often play "Black Diamond" to close their concerts. Even after Criss left the band, the song was still performed, featuring his replacements Eric Carr and Eric Singer on lead vocals during their respective tenures with the band.

Todays tune i a live tape from Midnight Special, 1975

Kiss - New York Groove

Sunday, time for a classic. As Ace Frehley did a nice visit at Gröna Lund a few days ago I thought it would be nice to play a tune that he is behind even if he didn't write it. The show was clearly above expectations and I was quite happy when I went home. See the setlist below.

"New York Groove" is a song written by Russ Ballard and first recorded by The British glam rock band HELLO in 1975 for their debut album "Keeps Us Off the Streets" and later by Ace Frehley in 1978.

Ace Frehley recorded the song for his solo album released in 1978. Frehley, like the other then-current members of KISS, recorded and released a solo album. Released as a single, this song made it to No.13 on the American Billboard Hot 100 late that year, by far the highest charting single from any of the KISS members' solo albums. "New York Groove" was performed on KISSs tours of 1979 and 1980, and became a staple of Frehley's shows during his solo tours in the 1980s and 90s, and again during the Reunion Tour when he rejoined KISS in 1996.

A live version of the song can be found on the Japanese version of the 1996 album You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best!! (and the U.S. vinyl version) recorded in Sydney, Australia in 1980 which would also make it one of the few live recordings released by the group to feature longtime drummer Eric Carr. Ace Frehley once told Rolling Stone magazine that his unique take on the song was inspired by his experience with hookers in New York City's pre-Rudy Giuliani Times Square.

Todays tune is with KISS performing "New York Groove" under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, in 1996, for the Reunion Tour.

Angel - Can You Feel It

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Can You Feel It" is a tune taken from the third album "On Earth as It Is in Heaven", by the American rock band ANGEL. It was released 1977 on Casablanca Records. It is the last album with Mickie Jones who had been the band's bass guitar player since its formation. It was produced by Eddie Kramer (KISS/Jimi Hendrix) and recorded in an actual castle in the Hollywood Hills. It marked a shift from progressive and symphonic hard rock to a more mainstream hard rock approach, with the exception of "Cast the First Stone" and "Just A Dream" which are very similar in sound to the songs on the albums "Angel" and "Helluva Band". In fact, "Cast The First Stone" was written during the Helluva Band sessions. The band toured non-stop and it was during this time they made their only tour of Japan.

Lovember Records reissued On Earth... in a digitally remastered limited edition in August 2008. It included a 16-page booklet with liner notes by the journalist Dave Reynolds (Classic Rock magazine and Kerrang), a track-by-track run down by the singer Frank DiMino, all lyrics and previously unreleased photos. The LP originally contained a symmetrical poster of the album cover.

ANGEL is a Glam Rock and heavy metal band from Washington, D.C., formed in the mid-1970s by Punky Meadows and Mickie Jones. They were signed to Casablanca Records, and had the image of dressing in white.

ANGEL was discovered by Kiss bass player Gene Simmons performing at a nightclub and was eventually signed to the same label as KISS, Casablanca.

ANGELs image of dressing in all white was a deliberate contrast to KISS, which wore black. ANGEL sported an androgynous image and elaborate stage sets. They were slammed by rock critics, and Frank Zappa ridiculed the all-male band’s female appearance in the song “Punky’s Whips”. ANGEL never achieved mass commercial success but acquired a following as a cult band.

Their first album was the self-titled ANGEL and consisted of guitarist Punky Meadows, bassist Mickie Jones, vocalist Frank DiMino, keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, and drummer Barry Brandt. This lineup would hold for the following two albums, Helluva Band and On Earth as It Is in Heaven, after which Jones would be replaced by Felix Robinson.

They made an appearance in the film Foxes and Frank DiMino sang “Seduce Me Tonight” on the Flashdance soundtrack.

DiMino and Meadows departed the band in 1981, and the remaining members brought in vocalist Fergie Frederiksen (later of TOTO) and guitarist Ricky Phillips (later of THE BABYS, then BAD ENGLISH, then STYX), but this lineup dissolved shortly thereafter.

Todays tune "Can You Feel It" is taken from the 1977 record "On Earth as it is in Heaven". Was also released as B-Side on the "Winter Song" single.

Kiss - Love Gun

Greetings, music lovers! Spader Ess here again.
The third installment in my series, to ease the workload of Stones And Thetania for short while, so they can concentrate on making the rock roll, is upon us. So brace yourselves.

The subtitle to the series might be “Kill your darlings” as it focuses on bands that I have had strong bonds to throughout the years, but that have been fading from my devotion over time or in some cases, ceased to exist altogether. But as in life in general, things are almost never as simple, so off course there are exceptions. Which brings me to the band up for measurement today.
Kiss.
Which also gives me the opportunity to write about Stones himself. More on that further on.

Kiss has been, and to some extent, always will be a huge part of my rock n roll heart. No doubt about that. But there is no denial that the journey has met some bumps along the road. But, let us begin at the beginning.
Kiss started out as one of the main reasons to why I started my “Rocket Ride” down hard rock.road. From the first time I heard “Rock N Roll All Night” it was instant love, some would even say it was bordering to fanaticism. I literally wallpapered my room with posters of the band. I listened to their music constantly, and as a huge part of my friends was in the same state as me, we more or less lived in Kiss-mania.

I will spare you of listing all the Kiss albums that I like, because there is more of them than the ones I don’t like.
From the first record, "Kiss" from 1974 until "Lick It Up" from 1983, they more or less lived up to my “Great Expectations”. Ten years, with fifteen studio albums and two classic live albums and one amazing compilation (yes, I’m only counting "Double Platinum" as you only need one compilation).
Actually within this time frame there were only a few quirks in our relationship.
  • "Creatures Of The Night" might not have been as solid as many of the earlier albums.
  • "The Elder" took some time to accept, both the music and the look. Even if still don´t love the record, I don’t hate it either.
  • The unmasking. The act, not the album. Of course I understand why, but some of the magic went away. (the uncertainty factor might be a part of why I nowadays love Ghost)
  • Vinnie Vincent! Nough said!
Other than that, smooth sailing so far. And after that we enter a longer time frame which is a very much less impressive, both when it comes to making albums and what is actually put on them. Mostly crap, with some exceptions of a good song here and there. This time of darkness lasted until 2009, when "Sonic Boom" came and reinstalled my faith in the band. The faith even deepened with their latest album "Monster" hit the record stores. They were back!
There is a few things though that makes it impossible for them to regain the fandom of earlier days.
  • The band itself. Are they an original or should they be seen as a tribute band of themselves?
  • The Greed. As they have gone from the masters of Merch to the Monsters of tacky merch… Hello Kitty Kiss? Not all Lotto commercials in the world can justify that one.
  • Gene Simmons. Once the coolest reptile on earth. But sometimes he gets a little too fond of himself. And I know it is physical hard, but sometimes he should try to hold his tongue.
Other from that, I still love the band, or at least the parts that I used to love, just not as unconditional.
The observant reader asks himself at this point
-Where does Stones fit into all this? Simple as this. The first time I meet Stones in real life, was at a Kiss concert at Friends Arena. Last time they visited us here in Sweden he helped me and my kids, with attending the concert. So, now he is a part of (whether he likes it or not) another of my fond memories of Kiss.
Thanx Stones!

Kiss - Deuce

Sunday, classic time, then it's just as well that we take out yesterday's concert out of the coat sleeve and invites you on some honourable classic rock with the band Kiss!

Yesterday did Kiss visited Stockholm for a show, the first gig on European soil, but they have been here since last Wednesday, a new scene and rehearsals were on this week's agenda before it was time to open the doors to the public. The Show was pretty cool, even if the guys have reached their age. Was nice to bump into Spader Ess and his kids, i hope they got a great evening at friends arena with the hottest band on earth!

The new Kiss stage show, first used in the European leg, will involve a giant robotic spider that will move across the stage and all four members will be lifted into the air. Also, the spider will shoot pyro from it's legs and its eyes will glow. The stage will be 100 percent new and not a rehashed stage where the amps and stairs are simply moved around and then called a new stage. Instead of being hoisted into the air per usual at 8 feet per second, Gene is now going to be up to double that amount of time and will be using a new type of tether that is see through.

Todays tune "Deuce" is a song by the American hard rock band Kiss. Written by Kiss bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons the song appeared on Kiss' eponymous 1974 debut album. In addition to being one of the band's most popular and most-covered songs, "Deuce" is a traditional concert opener. The song was performed on almost every tour to date, and has appeared on many Kiss' live and compilation albums, as well on Ace Frehley's.

According to Gene Simmons, he simply copied the bassline of The Rolling Stones' "Bitch" and played it more or less backwards. The entire song was written nearly linearly; the riff came first, then the bridge, then finally the chorus. While uncredited, Paul Stanley provided the lightly phased intro riff, inspired by The Raspberries' "Go All The Way".

"Deuce" also has special significance for Ace Frehley, who calls it his favorite Kiss song. "When I auditioned for Kiss", recalls Frehley, "they said, 'We're going to play you a song for you to listen to, and then try playing along — it's in the key of 'A'. They played "Deuce" as a three-piece. I thought, 'That's easy enough,' so I got up and wailed for four minutes playing lead work over it.".

Gene Simmons stated in reference to the song "Lyrically, I had no idea what I was talking about. Sometimes stuff means a lot, sometimes it means nothing." "Deuce" was a popular street term in the late 1960s and early 1970s (around the time in which this song was written), meaning fellatio and full sex afterwards.

On July 28, 2009, a live version was released along with "100,000 Years" (Live) and "Parasite" (Live) in the Kiss 01 track pack for Rock Band 2. Live performances

The song was performed during the first tours, mostly as the opener. It was dropped from the setlist for the Rock & Roll Over Tour and wasn't performed regularly in the USA until the Hot in the Shade Tour in 1990. It was played in some one-off shows in the USA in 1988 as well as the European Crazy Nights Tour in 1988. Gene Simmons said that at the band's first tours, after they did the usual setlist and encore, they didn't have any more songs to play so they played "Deuce" again.
