Sturgill Simpson - Sing Along

Yesterday did the American country rock man Sturgill Simpson visit Stockholm and Sweden for a show at Vasateatern. A friend and I were there at this small and cozy place with an audience of 900 souls (sold out), he entertained us for approx 130 minutes and played 21 tunes, check the setlist below.

The 41-year-old from Kentucky has certainly never known himself as a traditionalist, on the contrary. His as wide-eyed as the intrinsic view of what is usually called Americana is a big part of the point of what he does, and the reason why he now has such a large audience.  I really like that he dear to take out some wideness in his creation around the typical Americana that most artists work around these days. When he released his fourth studio album "Sound & Fury" on September 27th, 2019 he got very mixed reviews from good to bad. Yes, it's different, it's very distorted, guitar-wise but the tunes are pretty cool. Check out today's tune and you get the drift.

So about the show. The first part of the concert was dedicated to the material of his latest release, from the first to the last tune. It sounded really good live, got a bit more of everything, the sound was really good next to FOH (Sound Guy position). The second part, as he referred it to the old shit! Were the older tunes,  taken from his previous three albums, all tunes rocked marvelous live. Sturgill Simpson is a brilliant songwriter, an excellent guitar player, and a very sensitive singer.  Some great tunes were played along with some well-made covers of WHEN IN ROME and  Willie Nelson.

The only bad thing I can say about this show is the light on the stage. It was red, all the time, I mean, nothing else besides the color RED. Pretty boring to hear good music in red. The lighting guy on the tour has to have the most boring, non-creative tour ever, haha.

Sturgill Simpson still have a few European dates, go and see it if you can. Later on, he and Tyler Childers are teaming up for the US leg of the "A Good Look’n Tour". The tour begins February 21 in Birmingham, AL and concludes May 24 in Louisville, KY, see all the dates below.

Foo Fighters - Everlong

Lollapalooza is over, a great but very long weekend has passed, supurb weather, sun and no rain, happy peoples, lucky child and a satisfied dad. Many good acts played during this festival. GRETA VAN FLEET and THE HELLACOPTERS was the top notch in my book. WOLFMOTHER was also really good, KVELERTAK aswell, cool to see the new singer. BRING ME THE HORIZON had a cool stage set that worked well with the pyro :)

Here are a few pictures from the festival.

There was a few of the building pictures. Rest are a few of the Live shoots I took during the festival.

FOO FIGHTERS live clip

Today's tune goes to the Headliner on Saturday, FOO FIGHTERS are, after a quarter of a century together, in every sense the ultimate rock band. Night after night Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jaffee continue to sell out stadiums and arenas the world over, educating crowds on the life-affirming power of rock n roll. The band's current live show, has been described by Rolling Stone as “explosive and euphoric… wild and combustible at the place where Grohl’s love for punk and classic rock coalesce into something raging and tuneful… a show of enthusiasm that has grown over decades.”

FOO FIGHTERS began 2018 with an Australia / New Zealand stadium tour, continuing to play three-hour-plus rock marathons for capacity crowds over multiple nights at some of the world’s most prestigious venues: Madison Square Garden, Fenway Park in Boston, Wrigley Field in Chicago, London Stadium—plus a return to Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg— the site of the accident that led to the 2015 Broken Leg Tour.

FOO FIGHTERS did bring their explosive and euphoric live show to Lollapalooza Stockholm for a highly anticipated master class in thunderous, heartfelt rock ‘n’ roll.

Today's tune "Everlong" was the last tune that gilded evening air, the tune was released in August 1997 as the second single from their second studio album, "The Colour And The Shape" (1997).

Behemoth - Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer

Saturday the 26th of January, Yes I know Im late, but hey it is what it is.

Back on track, that Saturday was a very interesting day, I did a double gig. The main thing was to work with BEHEMOTH at Annexet, but at the same time support my colleague with FIRST AID KIT at the Globe. So I was at both places at the same time, oh well running in between the arenas.

At FIRST AID KIT, we did the famous confetti, this time it was heart shaped paper confetti to be shooted with stadium shots. Pretty cool effect. Then we had a golden waterfall, you know a fall of golden sparkles, really cool. These girls really can sign, amazing. And it's the home field for these Swedish youngsters and it must have been a show of the lifetime to play for a sold-out Globen. They also had some guest artists as Amanda Jenssen, Sarah Klang, Little Jinder and Silvana Imam that joined the evening. Below is some pictures from the day.

Upstairs at BEHEMOTH it was mostly fire, some CO2, rigged as a crucifix and some black confetti to symbolise insects. Pretty cool effect, when the confetti was blown up in the arse on the bass player that did his centre number in the tune "Lucifer", see the live clip from Paris below, no fire here only sparkles because of the regulations at Bataclan.

The main act BEHEMOTH did a hell of a show, can't even remember if I have seen them as good as this. Excellent set list and very good executed, all my favorite tunes was played like "Conquer All", "Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer", "Ov Fire and the Void" and "Chant For Ezkaton 2000 E.V", decent length of the show, cool choreographed with pyro and the video wall, very good lighting, good sound and excellent pyro techs, well-done guys. See all the tunes below.

But hey this was not everything, together on the tour they had magically lurked over WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM and the Swedes in AT THE GATES, what a tour package that is. WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM was the first band to open the evening, half an hour they got in the spotlight and they used their time wisely with an excellent sound quality that really released their dreamy and seductive black metal in a dignified manner. The second act was the Swedish veterans AT THE GATES, with an hour of play time they mixed their tunes with new like "To Drink From the Night Itself", "A Stare Bound in Stone" and "Daggers of Black Haze" with classics like "Slaughter Of The Soul" and "Blinded By Fear" where Seth from BEHEMOTH helps out with some extra guitars.

Slayer - Angel Of Death

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman. They detail the Nazi physician Josef Mengele's human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

Although the lyrics describe Mengele's abuses rather than endorsing them, "Angel of Death" led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism against the band, which they vigorously denied but which followed them throughout their early career. Despite the controversy and the resulting delay in the release of "Reign in Blood", the song remains a live favourite and has appeared on all of SLAYERs live albums.

The song has been described as highly influential in the development of thrash metal or speed metal, and is highly regarded by some critics; AllMusic's Steve Huey called it a classic and the album "the pinnacle of speed metal". The half-time riff was sampled by PUBLIC ENEMY in their 1988 song "She Watch Channel Zero?!."

Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die

Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

The show at Hovet with SLAYER was a pure thrash metal fest, 3 great support acts like LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY as you surely notice already, that I could not resist playing them all here.

SLAYERs show is the far best I have ever seen and I believe I have seen them more than 10 times over all these years. SLAYERs show at Hovet is the best live performance of the year by far. But in the other hand I have missed many because of to much work and when I day off comes I prefer to relax and rest.

The setlist of SLAYER was the regular one, playing the same tunes at every stop on this tour. The pyro was pure magic, great work Pyrotek! Nice to work with you guys again.

On December 2, 2018, Holt announced that he would not perform the remainder of the band's European tour to be with his dying father. Former MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel would fill in for him as a result. Two days to learn all the riff, amazing, as he pulled it off terrific.

The show ends with standing ovations for almost 10 minutes when Tom Araya stands still in front of the audience and receiving cheers and applause without adversity, he moves slowly along the stage edge and sucks in the cheers, he is the happiest man at this moment, he ends everything by reading a note in Swedish saying ”Jag kommer sakna er alla” (I will miss all of you), so powerful and heartbreaking.

And all I can say is that we will miss you SLAYER!

Setlist from the show at Hovet.

Here is a classic live clip.

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

The official music video for the album's third single, "Overlord", premiered on June 30, 2015 "Overlord", the new Jorge Torres-Torres-directed video from Richmond, Virginia-based metallers LAMB OF GOD, can be seen below.

Some LOG picks from the show.

Setlist from Hovet.

Omerta
Ruin
Walk With Me in Hell
Now You've Got Something to Die For
512
Engage the Fear Machine
Blacken the Cursed Sun
Laid to Rest
Redneck

Today's tune was not included in the set. But anyway is a good LAMB OF GOD tune, so enjoy!

Anthrax - Indians

"Indians" is a single by thrash metal band ANTHRAX, the tune is taken from the album, "Among the Living". It is one of ANTHRAXs most famous songs, appearing on their best-of albums: "Return of the Killer A's, Madhouse: The Very Best of Anthrax" and the Anthology: "No Hit Wonders (1985–1991)".

It also appears in Guitar Hero game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and as downloadable content for the Rock Band series and Rocksmith 2014.

The tune was, of course, played on the show a few days back when they supported SLAYER on their farewell tour.

The setlist from Hovet:

Caught in a Mosh (with Cowboys from Hell Intro )
Got the Time (Joe Jackson cover)
Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)
Be All, End All
Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't
Antisocial (Trust cover)
Indians (with Cowboys from Hell Outro)

Obituary - Redneck Stomp

Holy Moses, my head is thrashed. What an evening at Hovet, four strong bands on one stage, 3 of them supporting the farewell of the classic thrashers' SLAYER.

The first support band was the American death metal legends OBITUARY, early slot but almost half full venue even if they started an hour after doors. 30 minutes set made them play the best from their catalogue.

OBITUARY started their set with their lovely instrumental "Redneck Stomp", a tune taken from the sixth album "Frozen In Time". It was released on July 12, 2005, and was the band's first album in eight years since 1997's "Back from the Dead", and the last to feature guitarist Allen West.

OBITUARY setlist from Hovet, Sweden December 5th.

Redneck Stomp
Threatening Skies
By the Light
Straight to Hell

I'm in Pain
Slowly We Rot
