Mirror - Black Magic Tower

MIRROR is the musical brainchild of bassist and die-hard metal connoisseur Tas Danazoglou (ELECTRIC WIZARD, SATAN's WRATH).

The wild, hard-rocking heavy metal of the ‘70s and early ‘80s has been enjoying a resurgence of sorts in recent years as more and more bands yearn for musical days long gone. Most of that revival focuses on the more mystical side of that coin, with occult rock, love letters to BLUE ÖYSTER CULT and the ethereal leads of PAGAN ALTAR enjoying some success. There are some sparkling from the mighty ‘70s and particularly groups like SCORPIONS, RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE.

This Cyprus-based metal warrior MIRROR released its second album "Pyramid Of Terror" in June 28, 2019 on Bad Omen Records. The album is great, it’s not perfect, but enough fun during the time it gets loose for a spin. Utterly devoid of irony or nostalgia, "Pyramid Of Terror" is no less than a transmission straight from the heavy metal motherlode, and a glorious testimony to a spirit that will doubtless outlive us all.

Nightstalker - Great Hallucinations

New week... time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

This week we put our attention to the land of Apollo and Olive Oil, here we find the Greece rockers NIGHTSTALKER. They have been around for two decades already. "Great Hallucinations" is the eight album release from these guys. This is an album that is rooted in old school hard rock with great tunes, cool lyrics with a bluesy, distorted, catchy and melodic sound that make it a loveful listening hour. In other words, everything that is needed to make a great album that hits your soul. Eight tunes split over 42 mins, makes the average length of the tunes perfectly reasonable.

"Great Hallucinations" is a groovy, catchy piece with a great variation in the tunes to keep the interest up and rolling all the way to the finish line. It's a well-crafted album with good production and sound, clear separation of all the instruments and vocals in the mix. Great power in Argy's voice, heavy and fuzzy guitar from Tolis, spacey and groovy bass licks from Andreas bass and finally a great swing in Dino's arms when he hits the drums.

The album opens up with the energic and upbeat rocker "Black Cloud", catchy lyrics surrounded by a heavy melodic guitar riffing that makes it almost impossible to sit still. This followed by the half paced rocker and first single "Sweet Knife", heavy chorus, upbuilding tempo in the end where they almost go bananas without losing focus. The album continues delivering excellent tunes, take the big rhythms in the tune "Sad Side Of The City", or the heavy fuzzy riffing in the melodic pieces "Seven Out Of Ten" and "Half Crazy", or the bluesy and groovy tune "Cursed" and the beautiful "Hole In The Mirror", heavy, melodic and just marvelous. The album closes with a trippy ending in "Great Hallucinations". This is a solid album release from NIGHSTALKER, absolutely worth checking up!

Yellow Devil Sauce - Zulu

Greece's rockers YELLOW DEVIL SAUCE has released a brand new album, "Zulu".

Thousands of miles away from the US west coast and a certain rainy city that spawned a handful of bands in the 90’s, lives a trio, hotter than the spicy sauce it’s named after. Don’t let their youngish looks fool you, YELLOW DEVIL SAUCE have been at it for more than a decade and are still going strong. It all started in 1999 when Alex (guitars, vocals), George (drums) and Costas (bass) got together and started rehearsing. The talent was apparent and the 1st place in a Battle of the Bands type of contest was granted very soon. “DeskJob” demo was released in 2001, giving a taste of the band’s main ingredients, a massif rhythm section, adventurous guitar lines, amazing vocal delivery. With influence of TOOL, NIRVANA, and the Seattle scene, in general, was obvious but well received as the band was too good at it.

Besides the aforementioned work, the band has participated in 3 Spinalonga comps and played alongside many great acts like the BELLRAYS and DUB TRIO and TRUCKFIGHTERS.

Now in 2018, the mighty sauce has returned to crush eardrums with their new full-length album, "Zulu".

1000mods - Vidage

The four-piece psychedelic/heavy rock band 1000MODS from Chiliomodi, Greece. They were formed in the summer of 2006, and since then they have played over hundreds of live shows, sharing the stage with bands like THE BLACK KEYS, THE BLACK ANGELS, GRAVEYARD, BRANT BJÖRKm COLOUR HAZE and many more. They are known for their commitment to vintage equipment, thick and heavy analog sound and remarkably passionate stage performances.

In October 2010, the almighty Billy Anderson visited Greece in order to produce the band’s debut album, while Malleus Rock Art Lab took care of the artwork. "Super Van Vacation" was born. In order to promote their debut album, they played 40 shows in 15 countries around Europe, including festivals such as Rockwave festival, B'estfest and Lake on Fire.

After two successful European tours, the band was ready to get down to work again. Their experiences and growth paved the way for their upcoming album, “Vultures” which was released on the 30th of May 2014. Two European tours followed with a massive two-month tour on October/November 2014 and a tour supporting The Atomic Bitchwax during May 2015.

The time has come for 1000MODS to get their effort to the next level. “Repeated exposure to…” was released on the 26th of September 2016, being their best album to date as well as an inspirational mixture of all that’s heavy in the glorious 70’s and the 90’s heavy rock movement. Having been recorded with hi-end outboard equipment in a non-stop 24/7 procedure, produced by both the band and sound engineer George Leodis and mastered by living legend Brad Boatright (the audio mastering engineer of Sleep's "Dopesmoker") “Repeated Exposure to…” sounds thick, beefy and tight, as a modern heavy rock album must sound.

Not much later, the band departed for a 27-date European Tour with Monkey3 and Moaning Cities, participating in leading festivals such as Up in Smoke Indoor Festival In Z7, Desertfest Belgium, Desertfest Athens and Keep it Low Festival. The Greece/Cyprus leg of the tour followed, playing in 12 different cities with their big gig in Athens in January 2017 being Sold Out with more than 2700 people attending!

Their 2017 “Repeated and Exposed to” tour features a total of 42 live dates in 15 European countries, including –once again- appearances in acknowledged European festivals such as Desertfest London, Desertfest Berlin, Under the Black Moon Festival in Munich and Riff Ritual Fest in Barcelona. The tour was a big success for the band with noumerous Sold Out shows accross Europe.

Sunday, time for a classic, this time we take a step outside the "pretty" normal box and play a tune with Maria Callas by Puccini and a piece from Tosca called "Vissi d'Arte"

Maria Callas (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας; December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977), was a Greek-American soprano, and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's temperamental behavior, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi and her love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Although her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "the Bible of opera" and her influence so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists.

Why Maria Callas, well mostly because me and Thetania just let loose the Wallander series, where the main character Kurt Wallander most adorable artist is Maria Callas, something that you will see that he plays more than once.

Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca ​at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. ​​​For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte ​are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, ​​​​her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

Nightstalker ‎– Dead Rock Commandos

Monday, New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Dead Rock Commandos" is an album by the Greece rockers NIGHTSTALKER, a band that comes from the land of Apollo and Hades. They have been around for almost two decades already. NIGHTSTALKER consist of Argy (Vocals), Andreas Lagios (Bass), Tolis Motsios (Guitar) and Dinos Roulos (Drums). The album was released 2012 by Small Stone Records.

Big attitude, hell of a groove and solid songwriting, stunning riffs with great melodies are the main things of "Dead Rock Commandos". It's pure rock, heavy riffing, light stoner approach but with lot of LSD. The tunes on the album keeps a very good quality from start to finish.

Opening track is the groovy "Go Get Some", a high class tune, heavy distorted riffs by Tolis Motsios screaming guitar and a very electrified and powerful vocal from Argy Galiatsatos. "Soma" have a RIVAL SONS vibe in the intro. The title track and today's tune "Dead Rock Commandos" is a great rocker where Andreas Lagios the Ex ROTTING CHRIST bass player swings his axe and plays really tight. "One Million Broken Promises" & "Back to Dirt" are two other tunes where he is more in focus together with the drummer Dinos Roulos where the later have a MONSTER MAGNET vibe with it's hazy riffs. Groovy rocker "Rockaine" to the more softer touch in "Keystone" to the LSD tripping "Children Of The Sun" and the angry and mean "The BoogieMan Plan" and the perfect final track "The Underdog", makes a great mix between the tunes.

Sum: Another album worth of raw rock ‘n roll simplicity.

Aphrodite's Child - It's 5 O Clock

We end the Greek theme with a real classic. Aphrodite's Child was a Greek progressive rock band formed in 1967, by Vangelis Papathanassiou (keyboards), Demis Roussos (bass guitar and vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals), and Anargyros "Silver" Koulouris (guitar).

Despite their short existence and lack of hit singles outside of Europe, the band is respected as a cult band, and their album 666 is often considered their masterwork in addition to being one of rock music's first concept albums. The album caught the attention of many in the progressive rock field, including YES frontman Jon Anderson, who would later collaborate with Vangelis. Contemporary progressive rock acts such as ASTRA have also cited the band as an influence.

Nightrage - Kiss Of A Sycophant

The Greek/Swedish melodic death metal band NIGHTRAGE add some hair in your chest on this Greek Special that's running here on Tune Of The Day. Today we have a mixed one (:

NIGHTRAGE was founded by Marios Iliopoulos and his close friend Gus G. in June 2000. They made their first demo in 2001, then another 2 demos in 2002. The band was originally from Thessaloniki. They later re-located to Gothenburg, Sweden.

A lot has happened since the previous album (See below). New recording studio, Dug Out Productions. New label, Despotz Records. New artwork by CephaloSpinal Design. And a new fresh breath of air in the NIGHTRAGE machinery. This is a band that knows how to survive trends while combining the old with the new, making a killer combo without forgetting their roots or where they came from.

"The Puritan" is an uncompromising eerie dramatic and melodic death metal journey in its purest essence. 11 tracks with great hooks and the biggest sound that you ever heard from these melodic death metal legends, trends come and go but NIGHTRAGE knows how to always deliver music that reflects their burning souls.

The production from recording-guru Daniel Bergstrand (MESHUGGAH, INFLAMES, DIMMU BORGIR, DEVIN TOWNSEND, EVERGREY, SOILWORK) and George Nerantzis from Dug Out Productions Studios in Uppsala, it is truly breathtaking and really brings up all the best elements that characterize the NIGHTRAGE sound.

Their first release, Sweet Vengeance, was released in 2003 and featured drummer Per Möller Jensen (THE HAUNTED), and bassist Brice Leclercq. They also managed to acquire the services of vocalist Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES). Sweet Vengeance also featured guest clean vocals on a few tracks by Tom S. Englund of EVERGRAY fame. The album is proceeded by their first video for the track "Gloomy Daydreams" on an earlier edit, with Gus G. on vocals.

Their second release, Descent into Chaos, was released in 2005 and had a change of line up, with the addition of a more permanent rhythm section. Fotis Benardo (SEPTIC FLESH, INNERWISH) took over on drums and Henric Carlsson, who also plays in the band CIPHER SYSTEM, on bass. Mikael Stanne, of DARK TRANQUILLITY, provided a clean vocal section on the track "Frozen". Tomas Lindberg left the band so that a more full-time vocalist could accompany them on tours and studio albums.

When Gus G. was performing with ARCH ENEMY at Ozzfest 2005, he was replaced by Pierre Lysell for NIGHTRAGEs touring activities. For some of NIGHTRAGEs tour in support of BOLT THROWER, Gus G. was again unavailable and his place was taken by Christian Muenzer, of NECROPHAGIST. In March 2006, Gus G. permanently left NIGHTRAGE to focus completely on FIREWIND (later in 2009 becoming the guitarist for heavy metal legend OZZY OSBOURNE). At this time Fotis Benardo decided also to leave NIGHTRAGE and focus on the reunited SEPTIC FLESH. He was replaced by Alex Svenningson.

Their third release, A New Disease Is Born, was released in 2007. Gus G. was replaced by DRAGONLAND/AMARANTHE guitar virtuoso Olof Mörck. The song "Scathing" was chosen for the band's second video, and was directed by Bob Katsionis.

After the release of A New Disease Is Born Alex Svenningson and Jimmie Strimell left the band to form the melodic metalcore band DEAD BY APRIL. Longtime bassist Henric Karlsson also left the band due to his family obligations.

Vocalist Antony Hämäläinen, bassist Anders Hammer, and drummer Johan Nunez joined the band in the summer of 2007. Their fourth album, Wearing a Martyr's Crown, was recorded, produced, and mixed by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman for a 2009 release date.

The fifth album Insidious. The song Wrapped In Deceitful Dreams references in the lyrics "Seas Of Eternal Silence" which may refer to the Sweet Vengeance song At The Ends Of The Earth or the 1997 Exhumation (Marios Iliopoulos' former band) album by the same name. Insidious is the first and only Nightrage album in the band's history to feature the same line up as the previous album. The Japanese version of the album includes a cover of Def Leppard's "Photograph".

Olof Mörck has not been part of a live performance or band photography since 2011. It is assumed he has left the band to focus on his main project Amaranthe. Antony Hämäläinen and Johan Nunez officially left the band to pursue other musical ventures in 2013.
