Robert Plant - Ship Of Fools

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Ship Of Fools" is a rock song performed by English rock singer Robert Plant. It was the second single released from his 1988 album "Now And Zen", following "Heaven Knows".

"Ship Of Fools" is a love song, pure and simple. The highlight is Robert Plant's singing. He pulls out the best of the tender parts of his range with this one. Plant started making the album with an ambitious vision. He wanted to make the era's electronic music, which was widely considered soulless and plastic, into something that captured the most vital and human aspects of traditional rock and roll and blues. He wanted to be a trailblazer.

In 1988 he told Chuck Eddy of Creem, "I want to cut through radio with a hot knife, this idea where they say, 'We're only gonna play stuff guaranteed on being a big hit.' I wanna stretch it out some. People like Tom Verlaine and Hüsker Dü are making quite important music right now, and people aren't hearing it because it never gets played."

With the success of "Now And Zen", Plant had seemingly achieved his goal. Yet, in 2005 he gave an interview in which he said that the electronic aspects hurt the music. Talking to Nigel Williamson of Uncut ("Good Times, Bad Times," Uncut, May 2005), he said that in hindsight the music feels "lost in the technology of the time." So, he'd done what he intended at the time with "Now And Zen", but later decided that maybe what he intended wasn't all that cool. Plant wrote this song with Phil Johnstone. On his previous three solo albums, he'd co-written with bandmates Paul Martinez, Jezz Woodroffe, and Robbie Blunt, none of whom played on Now and Zen. Johnstone also co-produced the album with Plant and Tim Palmer.

"Ship Of Fools" was used in "Freefall," the final episode of the '80s crime drama Miami Vice, which aired May 21, 1989. Miami Vice influenced television in many ways, including its use of music. The show didn't use generic made-for-TV stuff but instead spent a lot of money acquiring rights to use top pop songs of the era. Getting a song featured on the show was a significant indicator of '80s-hipdom.

Deep Purple - Oh Well

Thursday, time for a cover!

"Oh Well" is a song first recorded by the rock band FLEETWOOD MAC in 1969, composed by vocalist and lead guitarist Peter Green. It first appeared as a FLEETWOOD MAC single in various countries in 1969 and subsequently appeared on revised versions of that year's "Then Play On" album and the band's "Greatest Hits" album in 1971.

After the acclaimed release of “7 And 7 Is”, the first song revealed from their upcoming album “Turning To Crime”, DEEP PURPLE release their brand new single “Oh Well”.

“Oh Well” is a song originally written and recorded by FLEETWOOD MAC. It is accompanied by a music video that shows DEEP PURPLE on a very special mission.

Label and management would like to state that nobody from the band or crew, nor members of the media, were hurt during the shooting of the video in Germany in early October.

“Everyone knows ‘Oh Well’ is a great song,” Roger Glover says. “Steve did the demo for that one. You never quite know where it‘s gonna go with Steve because he is very inventive. Right up until the point, with a couple of verses in, it was pretty much the same as the original. And then, all of a sudden, it took off like a rocket… in some other space.”

“Turning to Crime” is the first studio album by DEEP PURPLE entirely made of songs not written by the band and previously recorded by other artists. It is produced by Bob Ezrin and will be released on earMUSIC on November 26, 2021.

Thin Lizzy - That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart

Sunday, time for a classic.

"That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart" is a tune by the Irish rock band THIN LIZZY, and was released on the eighth studio album "Bad Reputation", released in 1977. As the front cover suggests, most of the tracks feature only three-quarters of the band, with guitarist Brian Robertson only credited on three tracks. He had missed most of their previous tour, following a hand injury sustained in a brawl, and this album turned out to be his last studio effort with THIN LIZZY. On 27 June 2011, a new remastered and expanded version of "Bad Reputation" was released.

With Robertson out of the band, band leader Phil Lynott had decided that Scott Gorham would be able to handle all the guitar duties himself, and that no replacement for Robertson would be recruited prior to recording the album. However, Gorham believed that a second guitarist was required, particularly for live work, performing songs that were written for two guitars. He later said, "I was always a big believer in the magic circle – once you broke the magic circle, the whole thing was broken, right?" He deliberately left two songs ("Opium Trail" and "Killer Without a Cause") without guitar solos recorded, and persuaded Lynott to allow Robertson to return to the band to record the solos for them. Lynott relented, and Robertson flew to Toronto and recorded his lead guitar parts. However, he initially refused to socialise with the other band members: "Christ, I wouldn't even have a drink with them," he said. He later added, "I tried not to go out to clubs for about a week, then succumbed..." Robertson and Gorham shared lead guitar parts on only one song, "That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart".

"It was such an important album to us because of all the adversities that we'd been going through," recalled Gorham. "We had to pull this together or we were going to go down in a ball of flames."

Robertson stayed on for the subsequent Bad Reputation tour, which provided some tracks for the Live and Dangerous album (released 1978), but he left the band when the tour concluded.

Cold Chisel - Cheap Wine

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Cheap Wine" is a 1980 single from Australian rock band COLD CHISEL. The second single from the album "East", the single was released in May, a month before the album. It reached number 8 on the Australian charts, the band's first top-ten single, and would eventually remain the band's second highest chart performance. It has been described as, "one of Don's finest commercial songs.

The song first appeared in live sets in April 1980, and was recorded in one or two takes with no demo. Author Walker said, "It's about someone who's on the skids, but still having a great time. I can relate to that - in the seven years Cold Chisel have been together, we've only had enough money to eat the last two and a half. If you get into that lifestyle and start to enjoy it, you tend to stay that way even when the money comes in."

Producer Opitz said, "Cheap Wine" was obviously written as a single, something to follow "Choirgirl". If you listen to it, it has many of the same structural elements - where the chorus falls, where the bridge falls, where the backing vocals come in. And that was no accident." Moss said that he may initially have thought the song was too commercial, but the chord progressions were enough to stop it from being too poppy.

Barnes (front) flanked by Walker and Moss, in the music video Composer Don Walker said the song was, "a cobbled together song. The two verses were from two different ideas and the chorus came in quite late, and a middle bit from somewhere else. From memory, this was bolted together on the day, in the frenzy of writing and the euphoria of the first few days at Paradise Studios recording East."

A promotional video was shot for the song, featuring Barnes walking around an apartment, getting dressed, and miming to the song. Shot by Peter Cox, it shows footage of a cockfight in one scene. It was filmed at Roger Langford's apartment in Elizabeth Bay on 10 and 11 April, where the cover for East had been shot. Barnes wore a shirt depicting a woman using cocaine, with the logo, "Coke - The Real Thing".

The B-side was Barnes' first solo song-writing credit, "Rising Sun". A rockabilly song, it was inspired by Barnes' then-girlfriend, Jane, travelling to Japan.

Link Wray - Fire And Brimstone

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Fire And Brimstone" is a tune taken from the self-titled 1971 album by the pioneering guitarist Link Wray. The tune as far as musical style goes, is a freaking rootsy piece with some Spiritual feeling on it.

The music is an Americana blend of blues, country, gospel, and folk rock elements. This music is characterized by the purposeful use of simplified sounds to reflect the then-current vogue of blues and other roots music being used in many roots rock bands. Wray's guitar-work, composing, and vocals reflected modern rock influences. Despite publicity from radio stations and print media in the Washington, D.C. area, the album did not do well in national sales.

Some tracks from this album later surfaced on the compilation Guitar Preacher: The Polydor Years, and it was included in its entirety on 2CDs compilation Wray's Three Track Shack (Acadia/Evangeline Recorded Works Ltd./Universal Music, 2005) along with other "shack" recordings of '71 Beans and Fatback and Mordicai Jones. The album has proved influential in later decades, with THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, CALEXICO, Karl Blau, and Father John Misty, among others, recording covers of tracks from it.

Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr. (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005) was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s.

Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2013 and 2017 he was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock.

Montrose - Bad Motor Scooter

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Bad Motor Scooter" was the second track from the self titled debut album by the rock band MONTROSE. It, along with "Rock Candy", was arguably the best known song by the band. The song was penned by frontman Sammy Hagar. Its introduction, a distorted electric slide guitar sound which closely emulates that of a revving motorcycle, became the defining component of the song. When the song was conceived before this guitar sound, the band and Ted Templeman were not impressed because they thought it was missing a "hook", to make it stand out. Ronnie Montrose stumbled upon it while messing with a slide and fuzz box one day in the studio. Playing his guitar in Open D tuning, Montrose improvised what became the motorcycle sound — although Templeman and engineer Donn Landee kept him going when they failed to get the recording tape rolling.

When performed live by the original MONTROSE line up, Sammy Hagar would play the "motorcycle" introduction on a lap steel slide guitar. Hagar provided the same intro when CHICKENFOOT, the supergroup composed of Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith, performed a version during their live performances. Joe Satriani did the "motorcycle" introduction at the Montrose tribute concert using the whammy bar on his guitar instead of the slide guitar.

The song has also been included on the Sammy Hagar compilation "The Essential Red Collection".

MONTROSE was a California-based hard rock band formed in 1973 and named after guitarist and founder Ronnie Montrose. The band's original lineup featured Montrose and vocalist Sammy Hagar, who later gained greater fame as a solo artist and as a member of VAN HALEN. Rounding out the original foursome were bassist Bill Church and drummer Denny Carmassi. The group disbanded in early 1977.

The Doors - Blue Sunday

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Blue Sunday" is a tune by the American rock band THE DOORS. The song is from the fifth studio album "Morrison Hotel", released on February 9, 1970 by Elektra Records. After the use of brass and string arrangements recommended by producer Paul A. Rothchild on their previous album, "The Soft Parade", THE DOORS returned to their blues-rock style and this album was largely seen as a return to form for the band. The band entered Elektra Sound Recorders in Los Angeles in November 1969 to record the album which is divided into two separately titled sides: "Hard Rock Cafe" and "Morrison Hotel". Session bassists Lonnie Mack and Ray Neapolitan featured on the album's songs.

Today's tune "Blue Sunday" is written by THE DOORS in 1965, when they were first starting out. For this album, they wanted to get back to their early sound, and felt recording this would be a good way to do it. The clips is filmed Live at Aquarius Theater "Private Rehearsal" 1969.

Neil Young - Southern Man

Sunday, timme for a classic.

"Southern Man" is a song by Neil Young from his album "After The Gold Rush". The album was released in 1970. An extended live version can be heard on the Crosby Stills Nash & Young album 4 Way Street.

The lyrics of "Southern Man" are vivid, describing the racism towards blacks in the American South. In the song, Young tells the story of a white man (symbolically the entire white South) and how he mistreated his slaves. Young pleadingly asks when the South will make amends for the fortunes built through slavery when he sings:

I saw cotton and I saw black,
tall white mansions and little shacks.
Southern Man, when will you pay them back?

The song also mentions the practice of cross burning referencing the Ku Klux Klan.

Young was very sensitive about the song's message of anti-racism and anti-violence. During his 1973 tour, he canceled a show in Oakland, California because a fan was beaten and removed from the stage by a guard while the song was played.

Southern rock band LYNYRD SKYNYRD wrote their song "Sweet Home Alabama" in response to "Southern Man" and "Alabama" from Young's 1972 album Harvest. Young has said that he is a fan of both "Sweet Home Alabama" and Ronnie Van Zant, the lead vocalist for LYNYRD SKYNYRD. "They play like they mean it," Young said in 1976. "I'm proud to have my name in a song like theirs." Young has also been known to play "Sweet Home Alabama" in concert occasionally. To demonstrate this camaraderie, Van Zant frequently wore a Neil Young Tonight's the Night T-shirt while performing "Sweet Home Alabama". Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot can often be seen reciprocating by wearing a Jack Daniel's-styled LYNYRD SKYNYRD T-shirt (including at the Live Rust concert).

In his book Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream, Young stated that LYNYRD SKYNYRD wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" not in response to "Southern Man", but rather to Young's song "Alabama". Young noted that LYNYRD SKYNYRD's implied criticism was deserved because Young's lyrics to Alabama were condescending and accusatory.

Today's tune is with BOOKET T.& The MGs - 1993 Torhout, Belgium. Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Jim Keltner, Astrid Young & Annie Stocking.

Supertramp - School

Sunday, time for a classic.

"School" is a tune by English rock band SUPERTRAMP, taken from the third studio album "Crime Of The Century", released in September 1974 on A&M Records.

The album "Crime Of The Century" was SUPERTRAMP's commercial breakthrough in many countries, most notably in the UK, Canada and Germany where it peaked in the Top 5 while also making the Top 20 in Australia and France. The album had a few hits like "Bloody Well Right". Today's tune "School" was another popular track, particularly at album rock-oriented radio stations.

Hodgson describes "School" as "my song basically" but admits that Davies wrote both the piano solo and a good deal of the lyrics. Interviewed by Jeff Parets of Acoustic Storm in 2010, Hodgson confirmed that the song was based on his experience at boarding school and said of the girl's scream: "Everything, especially that scream that you're talking about just before the band comes in, does represent a lot... I mean, you know, school is a wonderful place. Obviously, it's a school playground but that scream does represent a lot more."

"Crime Of The Century" deals loosely with themes of loneliness and mental stability, but is not a concept album. Davies consciously linked the opening track "School" to "Bloody Well Right" with the line "So you think your schooling is phoney", and according to Hodgson, any unifying thread beyond that was left to the listener's imagination.

SUPERTRAMP were an English rock band formed in London in 1970. Marked by the individual songwriting of founders Roger Hodgson (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Rick Davies (vocals, keyboards), they are distinguished for blending progressive rock and pop styles, and for a sound that relied heavily on Wurlitzer electric piano. The group's line-up changed numerous times throughout their career, with Davies the only consistent member. Other longtime members included bassist Dougie Thomson, drummer Bob Siebenberg and saxophonist John Helliwell.

The Yardbirds - Over Under Sideways Down

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Over Under Sideways Down" is a 1966 song by English rock group THE YARDBIRDS. Inspired by Bill Haley and His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock", Jeff Beck plays both the lead guitar and bass guitar. The song was released as a single in May 1966, two months before the group's self-titled UK album (commonly known as "Roger The Engineer" and "Over Under Sideways Down" in the US and elsewhere).

The single performed well on the record charts and was ranked number 23 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

An instrumental titled "Jeff's Boogie" was used for the B-side. Although credited to Beck, it is based on Chuck Berry's "Guitar Boogie" (not the 1940s "Guitar Boogie" by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith).

Roger The Engineer is the 1966 studio album by THE YARDBIRDS, featured in both Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Albums Of All Time’ and Robert Dimery’s book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Recorded by the classic era line-up of Jeff Beck, Keith Relf, Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja and Paul Samwell-Smith, it finds the band exploring new sonic territories, pushing their blues-rock sound into the realms of the avant-garde, psychedelia and Indian music. This newly expanded edition includes the classic studio album on LP1 and a collection of 1966 studio recordings on LP2, housed together in an alternate sleeve inspired by an ultra-rare 1966 EP cover. Pressed on 180g heavyweight white vinyl, exclusively for Record Store Day 2020.

That was one of the records I bought under the first  Record Store Day, Drop 1. The rest are in the picture below. Hopefully, It won't be as many under Drop 2 & 3. As the main releases are usually repressing of records that you already own, at least it's a great opportunity if you are a new vinyl collector.

THE YARDBIRDS was formed in London in 1963. The band's core lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja, and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck, all of whom ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists. The band had a string of hits throughout the mid-1960s, including "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul", "Shapes of Things" and "Over Under Sideways Down".

Today's tune "Over Under Sideways Down" was about the situation of having a good time - a bit of decadence, really - in the '60s. Cars and girls are easy to come by in this day and age, and laughing, drinking, smoking, whatever, till I've spent my wages, having fun, explains THE YARDBIRDS drummer Jim McCarty.
Enjoy today's classic.

Alex Skolnick Trio - War Pigs

Thursday, time for a cover.

"War Pigs" is a song by British heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH. It is the opening track from their 1970 album Paranoid.

The original title of "War Pigs" was "Walpurgis", dealing with the witches' sabbath. "Walpurgis is sort of like Christmas for Satanists. And to me, war was the big Satan", said bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler. "It wasn’t about politics or government or anything. It was Evil itself. So I was saying 'generals gathered in the masses / just like witches at black masses' to make an analogy. But when we brought it to the record company, they thought 'Walpurgis' sounded too Satanic. And that's when we turned it into 'War Pigs'. But we didn't change the lyrics, because they were already finished."

During this time period, mandatory army service had recently ended in Britain but with the Vietnam War raging, many young men feared they'd be conscripted to fight in it. "That's what started this whole rebellion thing about not going to war for anybody", said Butler. "I was dreading being called up", the lyricist recalled.

Prior to its official release, the band often altered the lyrics significantly when performing it live. An example of this can be found on Ozzy Osbourne's compilation The Ozzman Cometh, which features an early version recorded by BLACK SABBATH for BBC Radio 1 on 26 April 1970. While Butler has said that "War Pigs" is "totally against the Vietnam War, about how these rich politicians and rich people start all the wars for their benefit and get all the poor people to die for them", vocalist Osbourne has stated that the group "knew nothing about Vietnam. It's just an anti-war song." The song's instrumental outro is entitled "Luke's Wall" on US releases of the album.

Drummer Bill Ward's first memory of performing the song was at The Beat Club in Switzerland in 1968. The band was required to play multiple sets every night and had little material in their repertoire at that point, so they would perform lengthy jam sessions to fill in the sets. Iommi has said that "War Pigs" originated from one of those jam sessions.

The addition of the air-raid siren and the speeding up of the song's end were done by producer Rodger Bain and engineer Tom Allom. The band had no input in these decisions, though they were pleased with the results.

Today's cover is made by Alex Skolnick, who is an American musician who is best known as the lead guitarist in the thrash metal band TESTAMENT from 1983 to 1993, and again from 2005. He has also performed with the Alex Skolnick Trio, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, SAVATAGE and METAL ALLEGIANCE.

Today's tune is filmed at the Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, December 11th 2011. The tune can be found on Alex Skolnick Trio's album "Goodbye To Romance", 2004

Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots

Time to present album number nine out of ten of the assignments we got. "Choosing 10 vinyl albums that greatly influenced my taste". One album per day, 10 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. Every day I ask someone else to do the same." Throwing the ball at some nice figure at the social media Facebook.

That BLACK SABBATH is a huge influence for me is pretty clear if you read this blog. The band has been around for ages. I believe the first record I got with SABBATH was the second studio album "Paranoid".

Today's tune "Fairies Wear Boots" is a song by the English heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH, from their 1970 album "Paranoid". It was released in 1971 as the B-side to "After Forever". The album was released 18 September 1970. The band's bassist Geezer Butler states the music was inspired by the band's encounter with skinheads, who are the "fairies" in the song. Tony Iommi states the title was inspired from an incident when Butler and singer Ozzy Osbourne were smoking cannabis and saw fairies in boots running around a park, and not from an encounter with skinheads. In Ozzy Osbourne's autobiography I Am Ozzy he stated he does not know what the song is about, but everybody told him he wrote the lyrics. 😂😂😂

Motörhead – No Class

Time to present album number seven out of ten of the assignments we got. "Choosing 10 vinyl albums that greatly influenced my taste". One album per day, 10 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. Every day I ask someone else to do the same." Throwing the ball at some nice figure at the social media Facebook.

MOTÖRHEAD is one of those bands that was played load in a house in Hertsön, Luleå where one of my best friends lived until he grew up and moved to my hometown. Heavy Metal, especially the NWOBTHM was played, thinking of bands like SAXON, IRON MAIDEN and the germans in ACCEPT and SCORPIONS.

That this dude and his older brother gave me more taste of these bands is not something I stick under the chair, even today they are kept high in course, especially MOTÖRHEAD and SAXON. Flashbacks in this time come virtually in my head every time a classic with these plays, a great time indeed.

Today's tune "No Class" is a song by the British heavy metal band MOTÖRHEAD. It was released in 1979 in 7" vinyl pressings. The song first appeared on the 1979 album "Overkill", and became one of the "cornerstones" of the classic 1981 live album "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith". It is one of the band's "anthems".

The single was available in three different covers, with either a picture of Lemmy, "Fast" Eddie Clarke or Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor. The single also contains the B-side "Like a Nightmare", which can be found on the reissued versions of "Overkill". The song was already a live track before it was recorded for "Overkill".

Stylistically, the song is described as "get-down rock boogie". Critics have noted the similarities at the time between Motörhead's music and ZZ TOP's, and the guitar riff in "No Class" is said to be "stolen" from ZZ TOP's "Tush."

On MOTÖRHEADs 1999 live album "Everything Louder Than Everyone Else", before playing "No Class" Lemmy dedicated the song to long-time friend Wendy O. Williams, who had committed suicide the previous month.

Kiss - Creatures Of The Night

Time to present album number three out of ten of the assignments we got. "Choosing 10 vinyl albums that greatly influenced my taste". One album per day, 10 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. Every day I ask someone else to do the same." Throwing the ball at some nice figure at the social media Facebook.

"Creatures Of The Night" by American rock band KISS did a big change for me, it was the first record I got, scary dudes with face paint and stage outfits from a other dimension. The Starchild (Stanley) with a catchy vocal, the Demon (Simmons) with his long tongue and bloody face, the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley) cruel guitar player with riffs you never heard before, and the Catman (Criss) a really cool drummer. A gang that you would love as a kid so the room got decorated with posters of the band.

"Creatures Of The Night", it's the 10th studio album by American rock band KISS, released in 1982. It was the band's last for Casablanca Records, the only label for which KISS had recorded up to that point. The album was dedicated to the memory of Casablanca founder and early KISS supporter Neil Bogart, who had died of cancer during the recording sessions. It is also the band's last album recorded with Ace Frehley credited as an official member and their first album with Vinnie Vincent as the initially-uncredited lead guitarist (Vincent would later be credited but not featured on the cover of the 1985 reissue of the album). It was also Kiss' last album to feature the band with their trademark makeup until "Psycho Circus" was released.

My guitar hero back then got to be Ace Frehley, i thought the solos was awesome and he looked so cool on all the pictures that I framed my wall with, found out later that he didn't even play on this album...haha I got fooled.

Today's tune is one of the lost gems KISS didn't include in the Kissology series. With Ace on guitar (for the last time) KISS played Creatures of the Night in lip-sync several times during their promotional TV tour in Europe.

AC/DC - Shoot To Thrill

Time to present album number two out of ten of the assignments we got. "Choosing 10 vinyl albums that greatly influenced my taste". One album per day, 10 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. Every day I ask someone else to do the same." Throwing the ball on some nice figure at the social media Facebook.

"Back In Black" with AC/DC is a real classic, released almost 36 years ago, on July 25, 1980, the biggest-selling album by Australia's most exalted rock 'n' roll gods arrived less than six months after singer Bon Scott had been found dead after a night of heavy drinking. An album that I could consider to be the first rock 'n' roll / hardrock album that I bought with my own money that I have saved of my after school work on a Video store. I believe I was around 11 years old, did the 5th grade in School and was very interested in movies, so much of my spear time did I hang in local Video store up in the north (this was during the time when the movies was on VHS, Video2000 and Betamax), hehe feels like I'm a real old fart by now. Anyway, I started to get some small assignment to do and in the end he gave me some money that I saved. One of the biggest assignments I got was the "Packages" that this store had, this ment that I had to bicycle over to Finland with packages full of "Erotic" movies that he had sold over postorder. During the period of a few years the amount of turns to the other country increased. The postorder started to get big business for him and I got more work so I had to do several trips a day to the post office. Well in the end it was good for us both, I got some extra money for my effort so I could do what ever I wanted back them, fun as I always had a big love for music, specially rock 'n' roll. I remember that back then a tune called "Hells Bells" from an Australian band called AC/DC was played on the radio and I got hooked. So when I had enough money for the album I bought it. It felt awesome that I could spend my hard earning money on a album by my self :) So the first record was "Back In Black" with AC/DC. I still have the copy left, but it's totally worn out, I have probably played this more than I can count.

The album have so many good tunes beside the classic songs "Hells Bells", "Back In Black", "Shoot To Thrill", "You Shock Me All Night Long" and "Shake A Leg". It's pretty simple but still so cleaver rock riffs that can hook anyone, it just grabbed my soul as a youngster to the next level of music.

Today's tune "Shoot to Thrill" is a song by Australian hard rock band AC/DC. It is the second track on the 1980 album "Back In Black". This song is also the second track of AC/DC Live and AC/DC Live: 2 CD Collector's Edition, and is included on the Iron Man 2 soundtrack. Although the studio version was never released as a single, the song is a fan favorite and a staple on classic rock radio stations.

When explaining his lyrical inspiration for the song, lead singer and then-songwriter Brian Johnson recalled reading a UK article about a neighborhood pusher who made daily rounds (almost like a milkman) throughout the London suburbs, selling narcotics to bored, lonely, depressed housewives. These substance-effected homemakers would then peruse the local clubs and bars, seeking out torrid, extra-marital relationships. The term "Shoot to thrill.." most likely refers to certain solutions such as diazepam (valium), which is often administered via injection to treat anxiety and depression.

Lead guitarist Angus Young has recently commented that the song's 'break-down', which occurs soon after the main solo (a muted and repeating three chord sequence of A Major triad, G Major triad, and a D power-chord leading up to a bombastic outro-solo), was inspired by the trio gun-battle climax from Sergio Leone's classic, Italian western 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". In this seminal scene, gun-fighters Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach stare one another down in the center of a Civil-War cemetery for minutes-on-end to an eventual shoot-out. Young said this sequence in the song was designed to mirror the actual soundtrack selection 'Il Triello' by composer Ennio Morricone. Both compositions feature a slow quiet build-up, increasing in tension to a thunderous, cataclysmic finale. Enjoy!
