The alternatie Scotish band MODERN STUDIES have released "Light A Fire", a tune that is a contrast of a space-psych-shuffle with lush 70s style three part harmonies. Together with the subtly arresting strings (which were written as if for a grand orchestral ensemble but restrained to a trio), these became defining sounds of the new album "We Are There" released February 18, 2022.
Through the hazy daze of a smoky folk opus, MODERN STUDIES craft rich soundtracks, stuttering Super-8 sketches from a washed-out world of melancholy, hand-tinted and tantalising. Lullaby couplets blossom into gorgeous chamber pop melodies, the drama unfolding behind Emily Scott’s plaintive vocal; part Julie London, part Sandy Denny, a little bit Kate Bush, with a hushed sigh of Joni.
Sweeping strings carry them into unchartered terrain on this new release, flying high above their psych-folk roots, it’s an epic journey that’s exquisitely delivered, transcending categories, nodding to Brubeck, Low, Talk Talk, Jim O’Rourke and Pentangle, making music that is ready to cross over in these modern times with songs of substance.
On their new album "We Are There", an ambient muse moves through the shadows, analogue instruments creak and Laurel Canyon harmonies tingle in tape-echoed air; melody and magic conspire to create something way beyond the sum of its many parts, elevating Modern Studies from self-made innovators to poetic protagonists.
Today's tune "Light A Fire", taken from the new album "We Are There", enjoy!
TEKE::TEKE is a 7 piece band featuring a Shinobue (traditional Japanese Bamboo flute), a Taisho Koto and a trombone alongside fuzzy guitars and a rhythm section to create a sound reminiscent of 1960’s – 70’s era psychedelic Japanese soundtracks, while remaining undeniably modern and punk. Their debut album entitled "Shirushi" (or ‘signs of great changes to come’) takes you through a vast array of imagery with themes of identity, spirituality, rebirth and the profound exploration of oneself.
TEKE::TEKE was first an homage to legendary Japanese guitarist Takeshi ‘Terry’ Terauchi and has quickly evolved into a band of its own by blending Japanese ‘Eleki’ with elements of modern music such as shoegaze, post-rock and noise. The band is a cocktail of 7 musicians from well known Montreal projects (Pawa Up First, Patrick Watson, Boogat, Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and Dynamo Cleoptara).
The Atlanta metal mainstays MASTODON are back on track and standing close to the road with their ninth studio double-album "Hushed And Grim", in their hand, an album that spanning 15 tunes in total, is slated for release on October 29 via Reprise Records. It comes as the follow-up to 2017’s "Emperor Of Sand", which scored MASTODON a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards (they would later win a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2018).
In addition to the great news of the new album, the band has released the first single "Pushing The Tides" taken from the new one.
When MASTODON was unable to tour the past year due to the global pandemic, the band took the downtime to enter the studio with producer David Bottrill (TOOL, MUSE and RUSH) in their hometown and make "Hushed And Grim".
A press release teases that "Hushed And Grim" will be a notably experimental record, saying it sees the band “surveying sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog threaded together by the innately expressive musical interplay of these four virtuosic musicians”. It also states that the album pays homage to the band’s late manager Nick John, who passed away in 2018 after fighting pancreatic cancer.
Today's tune "Pushing The Tides", taken from the upcoming album "Hushed And Grim", enjoy!
KHIRKI (Κίρκη - Κírkē pronounced [kírkɛː] ) is a three-piece band from Athens, Greece sharing its essence with rock 'n' roll and traditional music of their place of origin. Technically proficient heavy metal with frenetic riffs, progressive basslines, tribal drums, and powerful vocals. This is going to blow a lot of minds. Imagine a clean-cut KVELERTAK that meets ELDER.
Dimos Ioannou – Guitars and Vocals
Orestes Katsaros – Bass Guitar
Spiros Stefanis – Drums, Percussion and Backing Vocals
Their latest album "Κτηνωδία" was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Theodore Zefkilis at Sca Studios and Baumstrasse (drums) in Athens from Autumn of 2019 to Spring of 2020. Produced by Theodore Zefkilis & KHIRKI. Album Artwork/Layout by Manthos Stergiou at Manster Design. The album was released on May 20, 2021.
Today's tune "Black And Chrome" is taken from the new album 'Κτηνωδία' available on Vinyl and All Digital Platforms May 20, 2021.
"Metal, Meat & Bone – The Songs Of Dyin’ Dog" is the latest album by the American art collective THE RESIDENTS, best known for their avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, "Meet the Residents" (1974), they have released over 60 albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. They have undertaken seven major world tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. They founded Ralph Records, a record label focusing on avant-garde music, in 1972.
Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to work anonymously, preferring to have attention focused on their art. Much speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, they appear silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tails—a costume now recognized as their signature iconography. In 2017, Hardy Fox, long known to be associated with THE RESIDENTS, identified himself as the band's co-founder and primary composer; he died in 2018.
THE RESIDENTS' albums generally fall into two categories: deconstructions of Western popular music, and complex conceptual pieces composed around a theme, theory or plot. The group is noted for surrealistic lyrics and sound, with a disregard for conventional music composition.
The lineup of collaborators as featured on THE RESIDENTS' latest album, "Metal, Meat & Bone – The Songs Of Dyin’ Dog", released July 10, 2020, is as follows: Eric Drew Feldman, Carla Fabrizio, Nolan Cook, Peter Whitehead & Sivan Lioncub.

LOST HORIZONS melancholy-delia, informed in part by Raymonde and Thomas’ former respective bands: the legendary COCTEAU TWINS and DIF JUZ, arguably the first word in post-rock, 15 years before it became a trend. Their former bands were labelmates on 4AD in the mid-80s, which is how they first met. Fast forward to 2016, when Raymonde felt the urge to make music again after two decades piloting the revered independent label Bella Union.
Raymonde (bass, guitar, keyboards, production) and Thomas (drums, occasional keys and guitar) forged ahead, creating 16 instrumental tracks to send to prospective guests. Fortuitously, Thomas was at the same juncture. After DIF JUZ, he’d toured with THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, MOOSE, FELT and COCTEAU TWINS before, “the business side of music became too painful. Jamming with Simon, I got really excited, which I hadn’t felt about music in ages.”
LOST HORIZONS upcoming new album "In Quiet Moments"releases 26th Feb 2021 via Bella Union. The album features a stellar array of musical guests including John Grant, C Duncan, Marissa Nadler, Porridge Radio, Penelope Isles, Karen Peris (the innocence mission), Tim Smith (MIDLAKE), Ren Harvieu and many more. The 16-track album will be released in two sections. The first half (8 tracks) will be released digitally 4th December with the second half and full physical release following on 26th February 2021.
Today's tune is the simmering urban-soulful "I Woke Up With An Open Heart" featuring Nubiya Brandon of THE HEMPOLICS. The tune is taken from the new upcoming album "In Quiet Moments" by LOST HORIZONS, releases 26th Feb 2021 via Bella Union. ORDER HERE: smarturl.it/lh_iqm
Monday, a new week and it's time to introduce the last "Record Of The Week" for 2020.
The Australian psychedelic rock band KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD (KG) returns with a new album "K.G.", their sixteenth since forming in 2010. In the middle of the global pandemic has this collection of tunes that have been written, composed, and recorded remotely during lockdown from all the member's homes all around Melbourne, Australia. It's amazing that the creative spine in KG is so high and with such quality all over. It's almost like a modern ZAPPA, maybe not as kinky but almost and I love what they do. And that variety of madness, self-confidence, and with wonderfully cocky determination, makes this band qualifies among one of my favorites.
"K.G." is the second volume in "Microtonal Series" that began with 2017's "Flying Microtonal Banana". That this follow up is a well-composed album, where the word ECO feels very close in both the packaging of the finished product (the vinyl jacket comes with a brown paper bag wrap, the vinyl sleeves will be produced using recycled board and printed using plant-based inks, instead of plastic wrap, the vinyl itself is eco-wax made from random leftover vinyl pellets), how cool isn't that, well-done KG, I am so impressed. Hopefully, more acts will follow this), the KG sound is very recognizable and classic as they re-use everything and still shapes new things all scattered over 10 tunes and forty-one minutes. The album follows up where it ended with "Flying Microtonal Banana" but with a broader range of genres. From the opening interlude "K.G.L.W." that slowly builds up to "Automation" where the classic KG is very familiar where the fuzzy guitars is very present, catchy vocals and groovy melody give this album a very great start. The grooviness continues in "Minimum Brain Size" which offers some bağlama (Turkish guitar), "Straws In The Wind" and the powerful "Some Of Us" that have some Mideastern xylophone that sneaks in. The high octane "Ontology", that with its science-Indian-fiction burlesque theme gives the album some spice, to the more heavy 80's synth-based poppish piece "Intrasport". To the propulsive "Oddlife", a free form of polyrhythms and great riffing, cool diversion. The beautiful acoustic "Honey" changes the direction for a while until it's time to wrap everything up with the spooky and psychedelic rocker "The Hungry Wolf Of Fate", which gives you everything from heavy SABBATH riffing, Hendrix wah-wah, and some wonderful PINK FLOYD guitar plinking, awesome tune. The album is full of brilliantly experimental pieces that sum up to a stellar, solid, and very enjoyable album. There's a nice variety of styles that beautifully expands their already wide briefcase. "K.G." will definitely take them up another level.
Sum: Be ECO and get "K.G.", this is something you truly need in these times.
After a long day at work, yes I have an adult job right now, but only a small project, finished on Friday, but at least, a job in these times. Coming home, out with the dogs, showering, cooking dinner, eating and breathing a bit with a cup of coffee, discovering that I am home alone. So guess what ... the stereo goes on, up with a Vinyl, plays the latest with Joe Bonamassa, swings on well, but will return with this later on, needs a few more laps. Playing a few others before the last one gets on before it's all croweded again.
Today's tune "Sulphur & Starlight" is the opening tune from the album "Summerland", released on April 10th, 2020. It's a marvelous tune that combining psych metal, ’90s alt rock, 20's pop and a touch of prog into a truly singular sound. Enjoy!
BRING ME THE HORIZON have released new tune "Teardrops" taken from the upcoming EP "Post Human: Survival Horror" that is set to be released on Oct. 30 digitaly and physical copies of the EP will be dispatched in line with the 22nd of January 2021 release date.
"Post Human: Survival Horror" is the first EP from their Post Human series, which was conceived during lockdown and was showcased during the BMTH8 and BMTHS2 Youtube Series. The entire EP has been written and recorded in the same, innovative way from their home studios, and features artists YUNGBLUD, Nova Twins, BABYMETAL and Amy Lee from EVANESCENCE.
Frontman Oli Sykes directed, edited and starred in the single’s accompanying video. A press release states that he “draws on his personal relationship with depression channeling it into the visual representation of him drowning, which saw him spend a full day in an underwater tank when filming”.
Sykes said of the new track: “It is my favourite song off the record. I’m so excited to get this single out, it feels like a classic Bring Me The Horizon tune but without it feeling like anything we’ve done before. I feel like ‘Teardrops’ is some of the best work we’ve ever done, musically and lyrically as whole.”
Speaking to NME in June, frontman Oli Sykes said of ‘Post Human’: “The idea behind ‘Post Human’ is looking at how we’ve stepped out of evolution and the food chain. If we can do that, then we can take responsibility for what we’ve done to the planet and become something better than what humans are right now.”
Last week, BMTH confirmed details of their ‘Post Human’ UK arena tour, which is due to kick off in September 2021. The tour is set to visit Glasgow, Cardiff, Sheffield, Birmingham and London next year, with the shows reportedly set to be the band’s “only UK dates” in 2021.
Enjoy today's tune "Teardrops". The tune follows on the heels of the previously released songs "Ludens," "Parasite Eve" and "Obey." The additional six songs on the forthcoming record were also shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are rushing towards the abyss. In a more depressing way than in other times, the future is more uncertain and at the same time seemingly immune against change. What can rock music do other than accompany the fall with songs halfway downwards?
VAK makes no higher claims and has no answer to the question of what to do. What they can do is to shuffle the cards, engage in the uncertain ourselves and take part in the roaring sunset. They want to feel creative, they shuffle ideas, they write songs that defy classification – Why? Because they want to have a good time before the ultimate disaster.
Their subversive metal sees itself in the footsteps of KING CRIMSON, RADIOHEAD, KATE BUSH, FAITH NO MORE, MASTODON, NINA SIMONE, TALKING HEADS, YES, ENTOMBED and SLAYER.
VAK is:
Jesper Skarin (ex-SWITCH OPENS, THE FIELD, MISERY LOVES CO.),
Tobias Alpadie (MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, ex-JESAIAH),
Ivan Rey (RÅTTA, ex-SESAM),
Robin Skarin (SLOWLAND) and
Anders Bartonek (ex-SWITCH OPENS).
VAKs second album "Loud Wind" was produced by themselves and mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna).
Ps... VAK is not a Norwegian black metal band, nor a Swedish death metal outfit, yet the band faced the real menace of death, but returned back to life… ...Ds
Today's tune "The Birds Of Earth" is taken from the album "Loud Wind", enjoy!
"Gold & Grey" is the latest release from Georgia’s finest, BARONESS. It's been 12 years since they started their journey thru the color palette with the 2007's "Red" Album to today's "Gold & Grey". It certainly been an wild colorful ride for the guys, lineup changes, bus crash is a few milestones they have been true over the years. "Gold & Grey" was released on June 14th, 2019 on Abraham Hymns.
"Gold & Grey" is a massive piece of music with a lot of stylistic changes and instrumental experimentation. The Baizley cover art is absolutely stunning, the painting was born from a deeply personal reflection on the past 12 years of this band’s history, and will stand as the 6th and final piece in their chromatically-themed records. While "Gold & Grey" found the outfit once again working with "Purple" producer Dave Fridmann (THE FLAMING LIPS, MOGWAI), sequestering themselves at Fridmann’s remote upstate New York Tarbox Road Studio, the 17-track album ushered in two significant changes: a decidedly different recording process and guitar player Gina Gleason’s debut on a BARONESS recording that resulted in the band’s most collaborative and emotionally evocative release to date.
"Gold & Grey" opens with the high paced progressive "Front Toward Enemy", an high energy and angry tune, cool riffing and strumming bass lick. Follows up with the groovy and gothic tune "I’m Already Gone". "Seasons" rolls out of the box with some incredible drumming signed Sebastian Thomson, sounds almost like drum n bass before the rest of the orchestra spices it up with a progressive touch and make it pure magic. The tune have so many sounds that it makes it impossible to label it. "Sevens" is a beautiful piano interlude, before it leave some space to "Tourniquet", low-fi vocals and acoustic guitar that begins the tune before it reaches full blom with excellent twin-guitars. "Anchor’s Lament" soft interlude with some strings until it clear the way for the progressive rocker "Throw Me An Anchor" that have a wide spread from garage rock to progressive sound. The album slows down to a live touching "I’d Do Anything". "Blankets Of Ash" is a war ambient interlude before the atmospheric and soft piece "Emmett-Radiating Light" that continues with a softy "Cold Blooded Angels", a tune that slowly moves forward until it half way true shifts into a heavier sound. "Crooked Mile" is a light guitar interlude. "Broken Halo" have some excellent twin guitar playing. "Can Oscura" is an instrumental piece that steps out a bit with it Krautrock sound. "Borderlines" is majestic rocker with it's monumental riffage and catchy space chorus. The last interlude "Assault On East Falls" tickles on your nerve before the album closer "Pale Sun" that is another curve-ball on the album that show the great musicianship that BARONESS have in 2019 and "Gold & Grey" is a varied and ambitious piece of music and an perfect conclusion of the band’s color-themed albums.
Sum: "Gold & Grey" is a work of art.
Gina Gleason (guitar), Sebastian Thomson (drums),
John Baizley (vocals/guitar) and Nick Jost (bass).
Today's tune "Seasons", taken from the album "Gold & Grey", enjoy!

Part of the post-CARDIGANS trend in Scandinavian pop toward a more rocking, garage sound, Oslo, Norway's CATO SALSA EXPERIENCE make a righteously sloppy clatter with a strong hint of psychedelia and just enough pop smarts to make it work. The group formed in 2000 when singer and guitarist Cato Thomassen, bassist Christian Engfelt, and drummer Jon Magne Riise held an informal jam session in Thomassen's kitchen. Adding keyboardist Nina Bjorndalen and taking their nonsensical name from a joke someone had scribbled on the aforementioned kitchen wall, the band started gigging around the local clubs and released a self-titled 10" EP. After THE HIVES made the Scandinavian countries hot again, the American label Emperor Norton signed the CATO SALSA EXPERIENCE, releasing their debut album, "A Good Tip for a Good Time", in the summer of 2002.
Later in the 2000s, the group began recording albums with The Thing. Following the beginning of Cato Thomassen's full-time musical partnership with ex MADRUGADA singer Sivert Höyem in 2009, the band is seemingly now defunct.
Members:
Cato (Salsa) Thomassen-vocals, guitar
Christian Engfelt-bass
Jon Magne Riise-drums

THE GOOCH is an alternative rock formation hailing from Noord Brabant, The Netherlands that is mainly known for combining heavy riffs with all-out-balls-out weirdness, extreme noises, and unfiltered energy. They describe their own music as “Noises dogs seem to like”. Other busybodies and super important peoples. They have been known to compare THE GOOCH to the likes of FU MANCHU, MONSTER MAGNET, and RED FANG. In the past couple years, they shared the stage with bands like THE COSMIC DEAD (UK), KENmode (CA), HARK (UK), they have released an E.P. and a full album.
THE GOOCH are:
Bram van Zuijlen (Guitar, Synths, Vocals)
Stefan van Helvoirt (Bass Guitar)
Max Berns (Guitar, vocals)
Pim van Hout (Drums)

Internationally acclaimed guitar hero Michael Romeo has announced the release of his eagerly anticipated first official solo album, "War of the Worlds / Pt. 1", released July 27th thru Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. The wildly ambitious 10-song album sees the founder, chief songwriter and prime mover of the progressive titans SYMPHONY X furthering his reputation as one of the world's preeminent axe slingers and composers of adventurous, multi-faceted orchestral metal.
The album is inspired by the homonymous novel by H. G. Wells and incorporates elements of EDM, dubstep and classical music, inspired by movie score composers such as Bernard Herrmann and John Williams. Most of it was created when SYMPHONY X's vocalist Russell Allen was still recovering from the road accident he suffered one year before while on tour with ADRENALINE MOB Mob (in which his bandmate David Zablidowsky and tour manager Jane Train died) and the other members were involved with other projects. Michael hired three musicians he's known for a while, including bassist John DeServio, with whom he went to high school together.
Two lyric videos, one for "Djinn" (see below) and another for "Fear of the Unknown", were released on 29 June and 18 July, respectively. According to Romeo, a sequel, "War of the Worlds, Pt. 2", is already at the final stages of recording, but will take a while to be released because he wants people "to absorb the first one for a while, and then we'll put out the second record. They'll complement each other, but they'll also be a bit different".
Michael Romeo: "This is one of my favorite riffs on the album. The album title is 'War of the Worlds', but in this case, the 'Worlds' refers to the worlds of politics and religion."
The Nashville, Tennessee, alternative rockers THE DEAD DEADS releases an EP 2017, where today's tune was included, a video was made for "Nothing Will Be Fine". A tune were they have created a sound and a culture that is part heritage, part science fiction, and all ROCK. Heads bang as metal and grunge riffs are beaten into submission by relentless, often bombastic rhythms. Sixties harmonies, brutal growls and finely crafted wordplay force unexpected stops and odd time signatures into undeniable hooks creating a new brand of drum-driven rock–brutal, silly and sublime.
THE DEAD DEADS are very influenced by the sound of bands from 90’s, like THE PIXIES and SONIC YOUTH, to a more modern metal acts like MASTODON and BARONESS and the punkish and grunge roots of NOFX, WEEZER, NIRVANA. Very interesting mix of music.
They have been very busy touring over the years. And in 2017 got off to a crazy start with another trip on ShipRocked, direct support for NONPOINT and a run with ALTER BRIDGE and at the same time they released the latest EP, produced by Matt Mahaffey. They are currently writing for the third studio record, and will finish the year out with SEETHERs "Poison the Parish" tour after two shows with SKID ROW.
Today's tune is the politically charged song "Nothing Will Be Fine" is taken from THE DEAD DEADS summer '17 EP.

By the time Chrissie Hynde and her PRETENDERS released their seminal hit (and amazingly obvious Top 100 Classic Rock Songs inductee) "Brass In Pocket" the band was already on its third lineup... and that's before they had any chart success. Their third single, "Brass in Pocket" was their first U.K. No. 1 and reached No. 14 on the Billboard charts.
"Brass in Pocket" (also known as "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special)") was recorded 1979 and was written by Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott, and produced by Chris Thomas.
Hynde got the idea for the song's title when, during an after-show dinner, she overheard someone enquiring if anyone had, "Picked up dry cleaning? Any brass in pocket?" During an interview with The Observer in 2004, she revealed that she was initially reluctant to have the song released: "When we recorded the song I wasn't very happy with it and told my producer that he could release it over my dead body, but they eventually persuaded me."
The lyric describes the female singer about to have her first sexual encounter with a particular person, and is expressing her confidence that the experience will be successful. According to Rolling Stone magazine critic Ken Tucker, the song uses "an iron fist as a metaphor for "Hynde's" sexual clout." The Rolling Stone Album Guide critic J. D. Considine describes the song as "sassy" and credits the band for "putting bounce in each step" of it. Author Simon Reynolds similarly describes Hynde's vocal as "pure sass" and "a feline narcissism," noting particularly her "lingering languorously" over the words "I'm special." According to AllMusic critic Steve Huey, the backbeat "meshes very nicely with Hynde's unshakable confidence, and the song never gets aggressive enough to break its charming spell or make her self-assurance seem implausibly idealized." Huey also points out a harmonic shift in the music for the portion of the song where the singer lists the various attractive qualities she will use to make the encounter a success. Author Dave Thompson suggests that the song is actually about the PRETENDERS' first live concert rather than a sexual experience.
The last time we received a new album from the Canadian singer-songwriter Leslie Feist was six years ago. With her colourful voice that induces both hope and desperation, and arrangements that features folk-tinged instrumentation as well as distinct rhythmic passages, Feist has become a household name by many. Her stunning catalogue is a work of genius, and even though she released her first piece of music back 1999 not even a single tone of hers sounds dated. This is an artist that succeeds with the noble art of timelessness.
Apart from being a well-known solo artist, Feist is also a part of the Toronto-based collective Broken Social Scene. Her voice can be heard on three albums of theirs, and she will also be featured on their next release that is expected to drop sometime this year. As a solo artist Feist received her big break with “The Reminder” back in 2007. The album, which featured a song highlighted in an Apple-commercial and received four Grammy nominations, introduced FEIST to a whole new audience. With two new projects incoming, 2017 looks like a lot like the year of Feist – just like any other year she decides to release music.
FEIST plays this evening at Azalea.
Today's tune "Pleasure" is the title tune from her fifth studio album "Pleasure", released on 28 April 2017, through Universal Music Canada as a follow up to Metals (2011). Thematically, the album is said to explore "emotional limits ... loneliness, private ritual, secrets, shame, mounting pressures, disconnect, tenderness, rejection, care and the lack thereof.
