Rostro Del Sol - Cynical Mind

Friday, lets pick something surprising and very intresting.

The debut Album from Mexico City's ROSTRO DEL SO, is a musical collage of Blues, Jazz, Funk, Progressive and Psych rock from the golden eras of the 60's and 70's, which offers unexpected moments, developed trough diverse sonorities & intensities as the music goes on, each song is intended to tell a history on it's own, just listen and set your imagination free to find the essence inside

The album was recorded between 2019 - 2020, in Rec On Studios on Mexico city, the recording & mixing engineer was Jorge Trejo, and mastering goes by Juan Puget, the insane artwork comes from the Spanish Illustrator Elena Ibañez, and it's an ideollogical collaboration, where they told the artist a few references and gave her the freedom to express whatever she felt inspired by listening to ROSTRO DEL SOL music.

King Buffalo – Acheron

Monday, a new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Acheron" is the latest release from KING BUFFALO, the follow up to from "The Burden Of Restlessness", which was released earlier this year and is part of a series of albums whose third chapter is expected next year.

"Acheron" follows the same part as the previous one, but with a heavier psych sound and that you almost could feel that this is made during the pandemic era, there is some sadness in the space. Could be that the album is recorded in a cave and got the nickname "The Cave Album", as it was recorded in the Howe Caverns, which is far from Rochester, New York. Artwork by Ryan T. Hancock

The album opens up with the title tune "Acheron", a real beauty that ticks just over ten minutes and is one of four long pieces on this album. It's like a spaceys journey to the unknown. "Zephyr" is more riff based piece that give you a great trip through life. "Shadows" has a bit more electronic approach, that floats nicely in the atmosphere they are building. The synth solo in the middle takes you back to the eigthies. The guitars are marvelous. "Cerberus" is an tense and melancholic piece that almost hypnotise you, put you in some kind of statis. The songs takes some time to sink in, but it will worth the ride if you let it spin a few times. The tunes is full of well thought riffs and intressting passages to get lost in. A great delivery from KING BUFFALO and Im already longing for the third part.

Sum: "Acheron" is the evolution you are looking for!

Kadabra - Settle Me

"Ultra" is the debut album by the American psychedelic rockers KADABRA.

The band hails from Spokane, Washington U.S., delivers the eerie psyche crawl of acts like DEAD MEADOW and the heavy fuzzed riff grime of BLACK SABBATH. In the fall of 2020, they tracked their debut album "Ultra" with Dawson Scholz, and it did see the light on September 17th via Heavy Psych Sounds.

In 2020, a year wracked with cultural dissent and a global pandemic, fellow musicians and long-time friends Garrett Zanol and Ian Nelson decided to create a band that would pull influence from a few of their favorite musical acts. After retaining the talents of their favorite local drummer Chase Howard, the group got to work on writing an album that illustrates their current climate.

TEKE::TEKE - Meikyu

TEKE::TEKE is a 7 piece band featuring a Shinobue (traditional Japanese Bamboo flute), a Taisho Koto and a trombone alongside fuzzy guitars and a rhythm section to create a sound reminiscent of 1960’s – 70’s era psychedelic Japanese soundtracks, while remaining undeniably modern and punk. Their debut album entitled "Shirushi" (or ‘signs of great changes to come’) takes you through a vast array of imagery with themes of identity, spirituality, rebirth and the profound exploration of oneself.

TEKE::TEKE was first an homage to legendary Japanese guitarist Takeshi ‘Terry’ Terauchi and has quickly evolved into a band of its own by blending Japanese ‘Eleki’ with elements of modern music such as shoegaze, post-rock and noise. The band is a cocktail of 7 musicians from well known Montreal projects (Pawa Up First, Patrick Watson, Boogat, Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and Dynamo Cleoptara).

Meatbodies - Reach For The Sunn

Within the fertile West Coast rock scene of the 2010s, MEATBODIES’ Chad Ubovich was a perennial candidate for MVP. Over the course of the decade, the Los Angeles native could be seen peeling off guitar solos in Mikal Cronin’s backing band, supplying the Sabbath-sized low end for Ty Segall and Charlie Moothart as the bassist for Fuzz, and, of course, fronting his own MEATBODIES. That recently dormant noise-damaged freak-rock outfit now returns with "333", a corrosive stew of guitar scuzz, raw acoustic rave-ups, and primitive electronics. That acidic mix didn’t come from nowhere. Because the downside to maintaining such a prolific work rate is that the threat of burnout becomes a looming occupational hazard, and after touring behind MEATBODIES’ second album, 2017’s "Alice", Ubovich finally hit his breaking point.

“I’d been touring for eight years straight with all these bands, and just couldn't do it anymore,” he says. “There was also a feeling in the air that everything was changing, politically. Things just didn't feel right, and I went down a dark path.”

Fortunately, Ubovich was able to pull himself back from the brink and, upon getting sober, began writing and recording at a furious pace. By mid to late 2019, MEATBODIES—Ubovich and drummer Dylan Fujioka—had a new album in the can, ready to be mixed. But when COVID hit, the band, like so many other artists, put their release on hold as they rode out the pandemic’s first wave. During that idle time, Ubovich discovered a cache of demos that he and Fujioka had recorded in a bedroom back in the summer of 2018, and he really liked what he heard. In contrast to MEATBODIES’ typical full-band attack, it was deliriously disordered. “It sounded gross, like a scary Magical Mystery Tour,” he recalls proudly. After subjecting them to some mixing-board freakery, Ubovich fast-tracked the songs into becoming MEATBODIES’ third release, "333".

While "333" charts Ubovich’s journey from drug-induced darkness to clear-eyed sobriety, it also reflects how the world he re-entered was still pretty messed up—if not more so. That psychic tug-of-war plays out on the opening “Reach For The Sunn” whose distorted slow-motion creep leads to a chorus both celebratory and dispiriting: “Reach for the stars/reach for the sun/reach for the trigger/reach for the gun.” In writing these songs, Ubovich realized that he wasn’t so much singing about his own path, but something much greater than himself. "These lyrics are dark, but I think these are things that people everywhere are feeling and going through” he says. “Here in America, we’re watching the fall of U.S. capitalism, and "333" is a cartoonish representation of that decline.”

The First Edition - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)

Let's continue on the memory lane!

Today's tune "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is a psychedelic rock song written by Mickey Newbury and best known from a version by THE FIRST EDITION, recorded in 1967 and released to popular success in 1968. Said to reflect the LSD experience, the song was intended to be a warning about the dangers of using the drug, and came to be associated with the counterculture of the 1960s.

The song was first recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, backed by members of "The Memphis Boys", the chart-topping rhythm section at Chips Moman's American Sounds Studio in Memphis, on May 9, 1967. The song appeared on Lewis' album Soul My Way, released November 1, 1967. Before Lewis' record was issued, on October 10, 1967, it was recorded by Teddy Hill & the Southern Soul as a single on Rice Records (Rice 5028 b/w "Stagger Lee") and produced by Norro Wilson.

Kenny Rogers and THE FIRST EDITION, until 1969 billed as THE FIRST EDITION, were an American rock band that fused rock and roll, R&B, folk, and country. Its core members were Kenny Rogers (lead vocals and bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums and percussion) and Terry Williams (guitar and vocals). The band formed in 1967, with folk musician Mike Settle (guitar and backing vocals) and the operatically-trained Thelma Camacho (lead vocals) completing the lineup.

As the counterculture of the 1960s was developing, THE FIRST EDITION signed with Reprise Records in 1967 and had their first big hit in early 1968 with the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" (US No. 5). After only one more chart hit, "But You Know I Love You" (US No. 19), the group, newly billed as "Kenny Rogers and THE FIRST EDITION", once again hit the top ten, this time in 1969 with the topical "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" (US No. 6, UK No.2).

For the next six years, THE FIRST EDITION moved between country rock, pop and psychedelic rock, enjoying worldwide success. By the mid-1970s, frontman Kenny Rogers had embarked on a solo music career, becoming one of the top-selling country artists of all time.

Gaupa - Mjölksyra

Swedish female-fronted heavy rock act GAUPA (lynx in Swedish). With surreal lyrics, an energetic, very unique singer, and an addictive sound that combines progressive stoner rock with doom, folk and psychedelic rock influences, GAUPA released their self-titled debut EP in June 2018 and have since made a name for themselves in the international underground rock scene. The “GAUPA” EP was well received and led to the band playing one of their first live performances at Scandinavia’s biggest rock festival, Sweden Rock. GAUPA then got a chance to release the EP on vinyl via German label Kozmik Artifactz in October 2019 and went on to playing a good number of shows and festivals. Critics were impressed not only by the studio recordings and their diverse & complex arrangements, but also by the level of intensity the band displayed live.

In April 2020 GAUPA, followed up to release their first full length album, “Feberdröm,” gaining even more attention from both the underground scene as well as NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, who will release their next album in 2022.

Jens Prüter, Head Of A&R at Nuclear Blast Records Europe comments: “While most newcomer bands struggled during the Corona pandemic, GAUPA managed to grow by quality. Their unique sound hasn’t remained unnoticed and word of mouth spread fast. Once we had seen their live stream show and had some video conferences, we knew they would sit well in an artist roster that contains the likes of Graveyard, Opeth, Earthless and Meshuggah who appear to be some of their favorite bands, even if GAUPA isn’t very metal at all. But it’s that attitude to tear down boundaries between genres – just for the sake of art. We are proud to welcome them in good company.”

GAUPA's vocalist Emma Näslund adds: "We’re all still nurturing dreams of working more with our music and playing larger shows. One could argue that it would be time to shake those dreams and grow up. Wooden Shjips - Staring At The Sun

The American experimental and psychedelic rock band WOODEN SHJIPS has been tripping over here at Tune Of The Day a few times in different formats. This San Francisco, California based band where thier sound has been described as experimental, minimalist, drone rock, and "spacey psychedelic rock". They have been compared to SUICIDE, SPACEMEN 3, LOOP, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE DOORS, SOFT MACHINE, GURU GURU, THE BBLACK ANGELS and many more. They are signed to Thrill Jockey records.

Guitarist Ripley Johnson also plays in two side projects, including MOON DUO, formed in 2009 with Sanae Yamada. The project has released one EP and seven albums.

The group played at the 2010 All Tomorrow's Parties music festival in Monticello, New York in September 2010 at the request of film director Jim Jarmusch.

Johnson has also released solo music under the name ROSE CITY BAND.

King Buffalo – The Burden Of Restlessness

Monday, time to present "Record Of The Week".

The Rochester trio KING BUFFALO is havening a boom in the creation cabbin, last year we got the 2020 release "Dead Star". And as far as the rumours says this new release "The Burden Of Restlessness" is the first of three that we are going to get this year.

"The Burden Of Restlessness" was written over the course of what most would consider a pretty stark and stressful time period. The end result is our darkest, most aggressive, and most intimate work to date. We are extremely proud of what this record became.” – Sean McVay

The trio of Sean, Dan, and Scott have once again created a marvlous piece of art on "The Burden Of Restlessness". It's a powerful concoction of heavy psych, blues, and stoner rock in stunning cohesion.

The album opens up with "Burning", where the rythm section of the bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson that build up the space until the light guitar plink by vocalist/guitarist Sean McVay and the clear and impressive bass riffs creats something so simple and so magnific. The vocals feels incredibly comfortable and is just right in the mix. "Hebetation" is a groovy piece with a popish prog attitude along catchy lyrics and some electronica to boost up things. The electronic addons continues in the trippy piece "Locusts". "Silverfish" is a an intressting tune, some nice twincles that increases during the journey along with Sean smooth vocals. Half way thru the riffs gets heavier and heavier even the singing becomes more strained. The funky "Grifter" is a relly cool tune that burst up from time to time. "The Knocks" shows a little more beep and spout in the guitar in a very nice flow where the thoughts go away and pat Genesis and Frank Zappa on the shoulder. An amazing guitar playing in the end of the tune. The album closes up with "Loam", hand pick intro in an ambient environment with smooth vocals and really beautiful bass playing. Halfway thru that tune burst out with some heavier layout and some incredible guitar playing.

Sum: "The Burden Of Restlessness" is clever and marvelous made piece of music, it soft and smooth and in the same time hard and heavy. This is an album for any atmospheric psychedelic heavy rock fans out there. Get it!

Ty Segall & Cory Hanson - She Is A Beam

Ty Segall has returned with “She’s a Beam”, a new collaborative single with WAND frontman Cory Hanson. Cory and Ty have decided to release the much anticipated single "She's a Beam", along with "Milk Bird Flyer". Both songs were recorded 5 years ago, and were recently rediscovered. They will be donating 100% of the first week's sales of both songs to Black Lives Matter LA. The single was released February 7, 2021.

Unfurling like a five-minute jam-out session, “She’s a Beam” sees Segall and Hanson working pure psychedelic magic. For about 90 seconds we hear some foggy vocals, but the rest is dedicated to the two musicians playing off one another with their respective guitars.

Thursday, time for a cover. POOBAH’s 1972 anthem "Mr. Destroyer" is back to the forefront again! The cult psychedelic rock trio’s debut album "Let Me In" was just repressed for the fifth time on vinyl by Ripple Music. A quintessential release that proto-metal and 70s rock fans will need to add to their collection!

Today's cover is made in a hard rock, with a buffalo stance and the vocal power of Dave Wyndorf: MONSTER MAGNET. For more than three decades, they created their own style, that every fan of guitar-driven music is immediately able to identify. Somewhere in between vintage, old school, fuzz, stoner and psychedelic rock is where they created their own niche.

Friday, lets release THE ALLIGATOR WINE that will take you to a psychedelic journey into a dark yet groovy space. Inpsired by early 70s music, horror movies and fashion those two guys from the Black Forest pump out everything from creepy dark tunes to 70s disco grooves.

But THE ALLIGATOR WINE manage to merge their deep spaces and distorted grooves into supercatchy and great songs that can spice up any party or funeral! And the coolest part: It's only two people and there are no guitars at all! They just need a Hammond organ, a Moog bass, Drums and a lot of weird effects to create their unique sound.

THE ALLIGATOR WINE were founded in 2016 as an experimental Krautrock project by: Rob Vitacca (voice, organ, moog bass, percussion) and. Thomas Teufel (drums, spooky voice) Combining the vibes of experimental 70s music with a certain, modern pop appeal was the goal.

Black Elephant - Seven Swords

Monday, a new week and it's time for another "Record Of The Week".

The planets have aligned, and space itself has opened up to grace us with the heavy roll of BLACK ELEPHANT's "Seven Swords".

The Italian four-piece fuzzmongers mark 10 years of cooperative corporeal existence in 2020 and last checked in from their native Savona in Summer 2018 with the aptly-titled "Cosmic Blues", read about it here! and two years and an entire lifetime later they're back with the second collection of classic-minded heavy groovers, picking the best the '70s, '90s and '10s had to offer in riffery and melding spacey blowouts with desert-hued hooks.

"Seven Swords" is a well made album, the production is really nice, perfectly of the fatness is the bass line and the drums and the fuzziness and a glorious scream in the guitars makes the music very enjoable.

From the solid album opener "Berta’s Flame" that takes your hand with a firm grip, throws you into a cosmic universe that you float around in and feel the rythms tickles your body and you almost lose consciousness until "The Last March Of Yokozuna" takes over with it's gentle guitar which caresses your senses so incredibly beautifully. The heaviness is back when it's time to gear up in "Yayoi Kusama", fuzzy distorted guitar and the Italian vocals sets a great touch on this number. It's wandering further on half pace in "Mihara" with some attacks of melodic and stylish guitars. "Red Sun And Blues Sun" increases the pace a few steps. The blusey rocker "Seppuku" gives the record another face, cool. The near-nine-minute album closer "Govinda" ends this thirty four minutes cosmic trip. "Seven Swords" is a great fuzzy psychedelic rock album that suits all Heavy rockers out there.

Sum: Ready for some cosmic fuzz, then "Seven Swords" it is entirely in your home area.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - K.G.

Monday, a new week and it's time to introduce the last "Record Of The Week" for 2020.

The Australian psychedelic rock band KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD (KG) returns with a new album "K.G.", their sixteenth since forming in 2010. In the middle of the global pandemic has this collection of tunes that have been written, composed, and recorded remotely during lockdown from all the member's homes all around Melbourne, Australia. It's amazing that the creative spine in KG is so high and with such quality all over. It's almost like a modern ZAPPA, maybe not as kinky but almost and I love what they do. And that variety of madness, self-confidence, and with wonderfully cocky determination, makes this band qualifies among one of my favorites.

"K.G." is the second volume in "Microtonal Series" that began with 2017's "Flying Microtonal Banana". That this follow up is a well-composed album, where the word ECO feels very close in both the packaging of the finished product (the vinyl jacket comes with a brown paper bag wrap, the vinyl sleeves will be produced using recycled board and printed using plant-based inks, instead of plastic wrap, the vinyl itself is eco-wax made from random leftover vinyl pellets), how cool isn't that, well-done KG, I am so impressed. Hopefully, more acts will follow this), the KG sound is very recognizable and classic as they re-use everything and still shapes new things all scattered over 10 tunes and forty-one minutes. The album follows up where it ended with "Flying Microtonal Banana" but with a broader range of genres. From the opening interlude "K.G.L.W." that slowly builds up to "Automation" where the classic KG is very familiar where the fuzzy guitars is very present, catchy vocals and groovy melody give this album a very great start. The grooviness continues in "Minimum Brain Size" which offers some bağlama (Turkish guitar), "Straws In The Wind" and the powerful "Some Of Us" that have some Mideastern xylophone that sneaks in. The high octane "Ontology", that with its science-Indian-fiction burlesque theme gives the album some spice, to the more heavy 80's synth-based poppish piece "Intrasport". To the propulsive "Oddlife", a free form of polyrhythms and great riffing, cool diversion. The beautiful acoustic "Honey" changes the direction for a while until it's time to wrap everything up with the spooky and psychedelic rocker "The Hungry Wolf Of Fate", which gives you everything from heavy SABBATH riffing, Hendrix wah-wah, and some wonderful PINK FLOYD guitar plinking, awesome tune. The album is full of brilliantly experimental pieces that sum up to a stellar, solid, and very enjoyable album. There's a nice variety of styles that beautifully expands their already wide briefcase. "K.G." will definitely take them up another level.

Kadavar - The Isolation Tapes

The three-piece psychedelic kraut rockers KADAVAR is back with their sixth record "The Isolation Tapes".

While KADAVAR’s musical development has always been about liberation and pushing the boundaries of the retro rock genre, this is yet one bigger step into a cosmos where the dogma of the classic trio approach is left behind completely. You’ll hear triple vocal harmonies and trippy guitar solos gently riding on an ocean of vintage synthesizers, the tectonic plates of drum and bass calmly pushing from down below.

"The Isolation Tapes" contains a wide palette of another creative output from KADAVAR, everything is made during the Corona Pandemic. Everything changes as the world stands still and so does rock bands all over the world, some are creative with new view on things and thier music shows that, espasially KADAVAR, where thier influences spreads of progressive rock and old kraut rock, where the distinct vocals is the same while the lyrics is well thought out, the riffing has grown to a more psychedelic comsic and progressive vibe, the music in whole has gotten to be very atmospheric, with a big krautrock feeling from the 70's, partly very PINK FLOYD alike. The album have 10 tunes with a three quater of playtime and it opens up with a five piece suite consisting of (I - "The Lonely Child", II - "I Fly Among the Stars", III - "Unnaturally Strange (?)", IV - "(I Won't Leave You) Rosi" and V - "The World is Standing Still") where the FLOYD seeps through the sound. The second half of the album mainly put their focus on a atmospheric soundscape that could be used as a soundtrack to romantic drama. The beautifully "Everything Is Changing" stands out abit with its electronic keys in the melody. Big harmonies in "The Flat Earth Theory", mellotron heavy "Peculiareality (!)" and the laidback and big ending of "Black Spring Rising - Ilgen-Nur". The album sounds excellent in my ears, it's very softish album to be KADAVER and very unexpected, but it's done with a big heart during times like this and where the heavyness has been left in the idea box for future use. In general, the guys creativity seems to have no limits.

„It all came at once, and there was no way to fight it“, says the guitarist and lead vocalist Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann. „No more touring, stay at home, put everything on hold. With all the downsides of the lock down, there were a few days when I just felt free as a bird. I was out of reach, and it was alright. It has been a while since I have felt like that actually. And I believe we all needed it. We were able to just drift along and make music of whatever came to our minds.“

Drummer Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt: „We used to have sort of a clear vision once we started making a record. And making a connection to the previous record was always part of it. This time, it was different. We had no orientation, no expectation towards ourselves, I might even say. Corona took our gravity…“

The album was released on October 23, 2020 as CD and in various Vinyl variations, including some colors with additional art prints (6 x 111 pieces each = 666 pieces) by various artists. All vinyl versions (including those without art prints) are already sold out before publication!

Blues Pills - Holy Moly!

Monday, time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Holy Moly!" is the return of the Swedish rockers BLUES PILLS.

Since 2011, guitarist Zack Anderson and vocalist Elin Larsson have navigated this psychedelic infused blues band. With four acclaimed full-length albums, a hand full singles, a few EPs, and a huge amount of live shows and have stepped forward and become visible to the international stage.

"Holy Moly!" is created in Närke, Sweden, released August 21, 2020 (Nuclear Blast Records), and contains 11 solid tunes with a pleasant playing time of 41 mins. "Holy Moly!" have a wonderful mix of rockers. All from the album opener and the ladies’ anthem "Proud Woman", a big stomper that shows the skills of the band. A big bunch of rockers with a big attitude like "Kiss My Past Goodbye", the groovy and sharp "Low Road", the raw and fuzzy "Rhythm In The Blood" and "Dreaming My Life Away" is pure and well crafted classic hard rockers. The Aretha Franklin blues-rocker "Bye Bye Birdy" is raw, dirty, and intense that it makes it impossible to not wave your head and let your hair follow the rhythm. There are a few soulful moments with some laidback blues rockers, like the vocally impressive "Dust", the love song "California", the loveful "Wish I’d Known", "Longest Lasting Friend" and the ballad "Song From a Mourning Dove" where Elin's voice just shines like a diamond. I'm very impressed that they once again made an amazing album that is so groovy and well made. Highly recommended!

Sum: Holy Moly!, are no less than formidable psychedelic blues-rock.

Forstenet - Skønhed Blandt Kolossale Masser Af Grå

FORSTENET is a Danish five-piece progressive and psychedelic rock/metal band, consisting of guitar, bass, drums, Hammond organ and, a highly prominent feature in their music, bass trombone! The main standout point of the band is that their songs are written in their native language Danish, with a singer who practices everything from clean singing, growling, screaming, throat singing, and powerful high-pitched falsetto singing. The eclectic vocals combined with heavy progressive grooves and dark, haunting, atmospheric guitar riffs with the nordic feel of the band's mother's tongue contributes to a quite fresh experience of modern progressive rock/metal.
