Windhand - Red Cloud

Richmond, Virginia's heavy psychedelic quartet WINDHAND took the 27th place with their super psychedelic ultra-slow fare doom metal album "Eternal Return".

"Eternal Return" is the fourth full length from the quartet WINDHAND represents a new era for the group, a chrysalis moment that takes them to new and unforeseen heights. Across nine songs and 63 minutes, "Eternal Return" is an infectious display of songcraft cloaked in alluring atmosphere, molten fuzz, eerie psychedelia and ethereal vocals. The album was once again produced by Jack Endino (NIRVANA, SOUNDGARDEN) with vivid artwork by Arik Roper (SLEEP, HIGH ON FIRE). Equally informed by heavy, fuzzed-out psych along with the iconic grunge / alternative groups of the 90s, WINDHAND have crafted a record brilliant in scope, powerful in execution, and perfect for an era of increasingly blurry yet still heavy borders.

Windhand - Old Evil

For a band who traffic in measured, unhurried riffage, Richmond’s WINDHAND have moved awfully quickly over the last few years. The bands approach to doom metal is as seductive as it is crushing. A big wall of doomish noise and a vulnerable but yet so crushing vocals by Dorthia Cottrell makes WINDHANDs concept unique and Viable.

WINDHAND begin a new era of gloom and grief and team up with Virginia’s Satan’s Satyrs for an amp-worshipping, acid trip from hell on an split EP, that was released in February 16th, 2018 via Relapse. A new full-length album is in the pipeline for late 2018, in the mean time we enjoy the smoldering gloom and grief in the lead single is "Old Evil".

Dorthia Cottrell - Dorthia Cottrell

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

From Richmond, Virginia we find Dorthia Cottrell, is most likely best known as the vocalist for the doom band WINDHAND. As solo artist Dorthia steps away from the doom of WINDHAND and moves towards an acoustic folk compilation of songs with a psychedelic twist, which showcases her voice in the most incredible way conceivable.

Cottrell’s self-titled debut solo album is a timeless story built around an acoustic guitar where her voice got to work for 100%. The album is really beautiful and thoughtful, a really hand crafted piece that should work in most houses around this glob. It's a pretty easy album to listen to, but it leaves a pretty big impression and emotion that will tear you apart, so you will spin it over and over again. The style is kinda traditional, as WINDHAND are. Just listen to tunes likes "Oak Grove" and "Gold" and you feel the darkness up on you. The dreamy "Orphan Bird" or the heart breaker "Maybe It's True" and you will sank into a landscape of strumming harmonies and Cottrell’s rich and soulful voice.

Her main musical influences are the blues, country and folk music.

Summary: Beautiful voice and a Guitar is all you need!

Today it's time to present category five(Best 10's) from the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night. To follow up the theme and the red thread for this years record I decided to choose to turn back to US and pick a tune of the more doom vibe but with a real heavy riffing. The best choice for the Best 10's would be the Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic doom band, "Windhand" and the tune "Orchard" from their second full-length album Soma.

Soma is an superb record for all fans of guitar driven trancendental, syrupy slow, monolithic and downtuned doom and it's as catchy as it is heavy. Powered by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of early Black Sabbath and Sleep.

A new week, it's time for a new album to step forward out of the darkness and into the light. It's time for this weeks "Record Of The Week"

Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic doom band, "Windhand", have just release their second full-length album Soma via Relapse Records on September 16.

After surging the DIY circuit with months of touring, their own IPA, a critically acclaimed self-titled release last year and a split with label-mates Cough this year, "Windhand" have confirmed they’ll be taking the main stage at next year’s Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands on Saturday, April 12.

Soma is a record more than just doom-metal fanatics—this is an superb record for all fans of guitar driven trancendental, syrupy slow, monolithic and downtuned doom and it's as catchy as it is heavy. Propelled by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of  early Black Sabbath and Sleep. An easy candidate for heavy music record of the year.

The album was recorded and mixed by the band’s own Garrett Morris at The Darkroom and mastered by James Plotkin in their hometown.

Windhand was formed in 2009,  (Asechiah Bogdan – Guitar, Parker Chandler – Bass, Dorthia Cottrell – Vocals, Garrett Morris – Guitar, and Ryan Wolfe – Drums) play what has been described as a tinnitus inducing mix of eerie psychedelia and haunting ambient doom.

2012 saw the release of their self-titled, debut LP via Forcefield Records which was critically acclaimed by Decibel, Pitchfork, CVLT Nation among others.
