Sleep - Holy Mountain

Sunday, time for a classic.

Yesterday the Swedish capital Stockholm once again got the privilege to get a visit by the American doom metal power trio SLEEP from San Jose, California.

I think this was the third time I have witnessed these guys live and they surely can deliver a heavy and loud trip into the stoner world. This time they played at Münchenbryggeriet here in Stockholm. Monotone rock, loud as hell and slow lightning that framed this up in a perfect way and I can say that I was happy when I drew home after the show.

Setlist from the show:

Intro (Moon Landing Radio Transmission)
Marijuanaut's Theme
Holy Mountain
The Clarity
Sonic Titan
Giza Butler
Leagues Beneath
The Botanist
Dragonaut

Today's tune "Holy Mountain" is taken from the second studio album "Sleep's Holy Mountain" (also known as Holy Mountain). It was released in November 1992 in Europe, and March 1993 in the USA through Earache Records.

The recordings that would become "Sleep's Holy Mountain" were originally sent to independent label Earache as a demo. The label immediately signed the band and released the recordings exactly as they were received. It was the last album to be released by the band as a fully functioning group for a while, as their subsequent albums up to 2018's "The Sciences" were released after the group had broken up.

The album, which includes the word "stoner" in the lyrics of two songs and prominently features cannabis leaves in its album art, is widely considered one of the seminal albums in the evolution of stoner rock. It became a favorite of the heavy metal press and the band was heralded, along with Kyuss, as leaders of the emerging stoner metal scene.

Enjoy!

Green Druid - Dead Tree

From the label that brought you SLEEP, welcome to the stage GREEN DRUID.

Brooding. Atmospheric. Isolationist. With weighty riffs summoning the Lovecraftian horrors of the cosmos, GREEN DRUIDs psychedelic doom entrances listeners with tales of the Old Blood and of dismal worlds too soon forgotten. Hailing from the land of Denver, Colorada - the first US city to legalize marijuana, GREEN DRUID worships at the feet of the monolithic amplifier and performs holy communion with the tremorous onslaught of murky tones that emanate from its maw.

The album is written during the most chaotic and depressing of circumstances and the album "Ashen Blood" is over an hour and fifteen minutes of crushing Psych-Doom.

GREEN DRUID consists of:

Chris Mclaughlin: Guitar/Vocals
Graham Zander: Guitar
Ryan Skates: Bass
Mikey Honiotes - Drums

Sleep - The Sciences

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The classic drone stoner band SLEEP shocked the metal world by dropping a surprise album titled simply "The Sciences" on 4/2, a day where the reefer they enjoy so much gains global adoration, the day before the record store day. Sadly only in UK and US. Rest of the world have to wait for the holy grail. It's have been released digitally and I could not wait to listen to it. :)

SLEEP is an American doom metal power trio from San Jose, California. The band earned critical and record label attention early in its career. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on heavy metal in the 1990s. However, conflict with its record company contributed to SLEEPs breakup by the end of the decade. The band reformed in 2009 and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. In 2018, SLEEP released their fourth and comeback album, "The Sciences".

"The Sciences" is the first new music that they have released in 15 years. Following in the footsteps of doom and heavy metal forefathers BLACK SABBABTH. The album opens up with the title tune, distorted, downtuned Wah wah guitars by Matt Pike until it's time for "Marijuanaut’s Theme", where SLEEPs aesthetic comes up, where much of the lyrics have to do with marijuana. On the album SLEEP makes multiple allusions to Birmingham heavy metal pioneers BLACK SABBABTH, whose sound inspired SLEEP. Tony Iommi is referenced in the lyrics, and the song "Giza Butler" is a play on the city Giza and the name of BLACK SABBABTHs bassist, Geezer Butler. A powerful tune that Al Cisneros slow bass is taking space along side of Matt Pike's guitar and Jason Roeder drumming. "Sonic Titan" and "Antarticans Thawed" are two great pieces where the typical SLEEP creation is to make an "hypnotic state" in the repetition of riffs and passages to grasp the listner. The album closes up with the dark and sympathetic tune "The Botanist", a which is a real beauty. And with this standard they are back in buisness for real, well done SLEEP, really looking forward to catch you guys live again soon!

Sum: For gods sake, don't miss these veterans of hard, doomy stoner rock!

Today's tune "Marijuanaut's Theme" taken from "The Sciences", enjoy!

Domkraft - The End of Electricity

Monday, it's time for "Record Of The Week"

"The End of Electricity" is the latest release from the monolithic power judgement DOMKRAFT.

The seeds for this Stockholm trio were planted in Gothenburg, where bassist/singer Martin Wegeland, guitarist Martin Widholm and drummer Anders Dahlgren met while playing in various musical constellations. Bonding over the likes of SPACEMEN 3, MONSTER MAGNET, SLEEP and HAWKWIND, plus a fascination with trudging, 10-minute/three chord songs, they finally came together after each relocated to Stockholm.

"The End of Electricity" is a fascinating album where the heaviest shaping sound flows out into a monolith malevolent half-chant incantation and the repeated notes follow each other into a kaleidoscopic flurry, a stunning drone psychedelia.

The album contains 7 tunes that spins in at 40 mins, the record starts with the 10½ minute "The Rift" which draws you into a riff minimalism that will be hard to quarrel out from before the collapse and the tunes fade out to the perfect culmination "Meltdown Of The Orb" takes over. Hey, are you guys hooked now, well I am! The beautiful CLUTCH alike interlude "Drones" flows in the air until "Red Lead" hits the pan and the riffs are screaming again. "All Come Hither" a wonderful piece with a very hypnotic melody, I have been humming it the whole day. "Dustrider" is a punkish SABBATH tune, heavy and filthy. The album closes with crushing riff of the psychedelic "We Will Follow".

DOMKRAFT. Their name combines the Swedish “DOM” for judgement and “KRAFT” for power.

Sum: "The End of Electricity" have an unique vibe, it's Psychedelic, Heavy & Loud. Don't miss this!!

The record is released on 4 different colours (Black, Half n half with splatter, Color in Color and TriColor) grab them wile you can. And yes you can get it on CD and Digital format.

Half n half with splatter, edition of 35

Color in Color, edition of 35

TriColor, edition of 35.

DOMKRAFT are:

Martin Widholm - Guitar
Martin Wegeland - Bass & Vocals
Anders Dahlgren - Drums

Today's tune "Red Lead" is taken from "The End of Electricity", enjoy!

IAmFire - Burn Your Halo Red

IAmFire is psychedelic mindblowing rock in it´s heaviest, most life-affirming and trippiest form. It´s equal parts The Beatles "Revolver", Black Sabbath, in a unique accessible recipe.

IAmFire is the brainchild of Mikael and Ulf. Starting out as Sub Rosa, first as an instrumental combo with Mikael Ehlert, Ulf Scott Hansen and Peter Ahlers Olsen. Peter Dolving was invited a couple of years ago to join the festivities, bringing a whole new level of vocal harmonies and lyrical depth to follow the rabbit through the looking-glass.

IAmFire are truly roughneck veterans. The gentlemen of IAmFire have a past in bands like The Haunted, and Hatesphere, etc. They have been around the block, seen the sights, and came out on the other end still with a drive and passion. Musically inspired by everything from Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and a love for Bill Hicks infamous "ride". Consider this is an invitation.

IAmFire welcomes you to step into a world of heavy and ecclectic, that very few touch. So get ready to get down with the groove. IAmFire lays it out in way that only bands like Mastodon, Torche and Neurosis come close to. Steeped in equal measures of heavy psychedelia, brutish grooves inspired by soul and 70´s rock, with Dolvings enigmatic voice lyrics through it all.

Come on down.

The seasoned four-piece consisting of:

Peter Dolving  (Rosvo, The Haunted, MaryBeatsJane etc.) - Vocals
Mikael Ehlert (BloodEagle, Hatesphere) - Bass and vocals
Ulf Scott Hansen (L.O.C, Suspekt, Great Deciever, Tech9) - Drums
Peter Ahlers Olsen (MOB) - Guitar

Todays tune "Burn Your Halo Red" is taken from IAmFire's "Eyes Wide Open" 10" to be released on january 2015 via Deadlight Entertainment.

"Eyes wide open" was produced and mixed by Jacob Bredahl @ Dead Rat Studio, Aarhus, Denmark, and mastered by Brad Boatright @ Audiosiege, Portland, Oregon. Brad has previously done work for bands like Sleep, Off!, Corrosion of conformity, SunnO))), Obituary etc.

Windhand - Orchard

Today it's time to present category five(Best 10's) from the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night. To follow up the theme and the red thread for this years record I decided to choose to turn back to US and pick a tune of the more doom vibe but with a real heavy riffing. The best choice for the Best 10's would be the Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic doom band, "Windhand" and the tune "Orchard" from their second full-length album Soma.

Soma is an superb record for all fans of guitar driven trancendental, syrupy slow, monolithic and downtuned doom and it's as catchy as it is heavy. Powered by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of early Black Sabbath and Sleep.

This years line up of categories was:

1. Best 70's - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2. Best 80's - Candlemass - Solitude
3. Best 90's - Sleep - Dragonaut
4. Best 00's - Grand Magus - Kingslayer
5. Best 10's - Windhand - Orchard
6. Free Card
7. Free Card
8. Free Card

Todays tune "Orchard" is a massive piece. Heavy drowned out, syrupy slow, monolithic with some downtuned fuzzy riffs, a real stoned out doom metal with strong Black Sabbath influences.

Sleep - Dragonaut

Today it's time to present category three (Best 90's) from the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night. To follow up the theme and the red thread for this years record I decided to take a trip to San Jose, California where we find the ultimate stoner doom band "Sleep".

A band with strong influence of heavy metal and of course the heaviness and doomish from the masters Black Sabbath. I did choice a great track named "Dragonaut", as soon as you hear the intro from todays tune, you know you'll bein for one hell of a ride... the tune has one of the most memorable, hummable riffs in doom.

The tune is taken from Sleep's "Holy Mountain" (1992),  The album is widely considered a seminal album in the evolution of stoner metal. The album's release was followed by a potentially lucrative offer from London Records, and Sleep signed with them. Around this time, Earache released its first Black Sabbath Tribute album, and Sleep contributed a cover of "Snowblind".

This years line up of categories was:

1. Best 70's - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2. Best 80's - Candlemass - Solitude
3. Best 90's - Sleep - Dragonaut
4. Best 00's
5. Best 10's
6. Free Card
7. Free Card
8. Free Card

Enjoy todays tune, it's a real classic!

High On Fire - Fertile Green

New week, which means that we will present this week's "Record Of The Week". The stoner metal band from Oakland, California "High On Fire" is a band that regularly visit the Tune Of The Day.

The bands sixth album "De Vermis Mysteriis" is a record that I listened to a lot in the beginning but did not quite grasped it, was probably too colored by the predecessor "Snakes for the Divine" that I liked very much. However, I have a recently found back to the record again, listened more and more and now I really like it as hell. I really dig the hardness, the raw power, the veiling sound that Matt Pike has got true this record, it's simply more High On Fire!

Just check it up, give it more than a few spins and you will love it. Yes I got this one on Vinyl with the Blue text. But there is also one with Red text!

The album’s title (translation: “The Mysteries of the Worm,”) is a nod to a fictional grimoire conceived by the late, great Psycho author Robert Bloch in 1935 and later incorporated into horror master H.P. Lovecraft’s renowned Cthulu Mythos. “It’s a concept record, a little bit,” Pike offers. “I got this idea about Jesus Christ and the Immaculate Conception: What if Jesus had a twin who died at birth to give Jesus his life? And then what if the twin became a time traveler right then? He lives his life only going forward until he finds this scroll from an ancient Chinese alchemist who derived a serum out of the black lotus—which is actually in Robert E. Howard’s ‘Conan’ stories—and then he starts traveling back in time. He can see the past through his ancestors’ eyes, but his enemies can kill him if they kill the ancestor that he’s seeing through at the time. Basically, he keeps waking up in other people’s bodies at bad times. It’s kinda like that old TV show Quantum Leap. Kurt actually pointed that out to me after I told him the idea. But whatever—time travel is a killer concept.”

High On Fire was formed in 1998. Matt Pike, the band's frontman and founder, also plays guitar for the influential stoner doom band Sleep.

Todays tune "Fertile Green" is taken from the Record Of The Week.

Cover art to "De Vermis Mysteriis" was done by tattoo artist Tim Lehii
