Tribulation - Where Gloom Becomes Sound

New week, new month and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Where Gloom Becomes Sound" is the fifth album by the Swedish metal prides TRIBULATION. The album is also the second big album release for 2021 that I review here at Tune Of The Day and BANG!! what a freaking release this is, I'm blown away! TRIBULATION never ceases to fascinate and enchant.

"Where Gloom Becomes Sound" contains ten tunes with forty-eight minutes of playtime that is executed in the best possible way, greatly balanced, darkly atmospheric, and remarkably consistent record. Big and razor-sharp melodies, an enchanting soundscape that is created with both heart and soul, really well crafted accurate composition with a magnific flow which makes you shake and fire up with excitement that small pearls bubbling up on your forehead. "Where Gloom Becomes Sound" opens the doors of "In Remembrance" and the quartet invites you to dive in an electrified double-door to the boiling cauldron of myths, magic, and mystery, the death grunts in Johannes Andersson vocals makes you hold tight and light a candle, the first lines in the opening tune is in Swedish. 

"Det är som mörkast före gryningen,

De alla har slutat andas och luften står still, 

Ur stålet strömma en motståndskraft, 

Som brutit fasornas sigill" 

 So powerful and frightening, these lines could be translated as ("It's darkest before dawn, They have all stopped breathing and the air stands still, From the steel flows a resistance force, Which has broken the seal of the horrors") .

 
The bombastic drumming of Oscar Leander is magnific throughout the whole album and works well with Johannes Andersson bass playing that gives a warm surface. Oscar Leander stands out a little extra at the end when he sweeps like a crazy bull in "Funeral Pyre" and in "Daughter Of The Djinn". The fifth tune "Lethe" is a short piano instrumental played by Jonathan Hultén, a really delicious piece, its Beethoven-Esque sonata evocations providing some brief breathing space. Adam Zaars and Jonathan Hultén's guitars are marvelous, a true sublime display of beauty and strength straight true the whole piece. Listen to the opening part of "Hour Of The Wolf", goosebumps. The euphoric darkness of "Leviathans" is a true gem where they finger a little on the other side of the border to shoe-gaze. The neoclassical guitars in "Dirge Of A Dying Soul" are so beautiful that I melt into a big meat pile. "Inanna" shows that they really know their stuff, so nicely done. The catchy driven piece "Elementals" have so much stuff embedded in itself, and the guitar solo... incredible experience. The closing "The Wilderness" is another beauty that breaks boundaries in their musical craftmanship and the guitar playing, drumming, bass, vocals, just fabulous. 

That this will be the last record from guitarist and songwriter Jonathan Hultén, who dropped out of the band after the recording of the album. I would say, it is in a way his "swan song" (farewell, goodbye) and that makes the listening all the more sentimental. The replacement is Joseph Tholl (VOJD, ENFORCER, DEATH BY FIRE, ROBERT PEHRSSON) a great guitarist so I think they are in good hands, and how it will work out remains to be seen. "Where Gloom Becomes Sound" is a remarkably consistent album.

The album title is inspired by darkwave artist Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows, which could not be more timeless. The statue on the album cover is made by Fernand Khnopff at the end of the 19th century. The immaculate production was helmed by TRIBULATION, producer Jamie Elton, mixing ace Tom Dalgety (GHOST, RAMMSTEIN), and mastering star Magnus Lindberg (LUCIFER, DOOL). The album was released on January 29th, 2021, via Century Media Records. 

In this musical genre, TRIBULATION is probably the best we have in Sweden, so today I am really proud to be Swedish.

After a few spins of the new single and my first thoughts, sounds great, a real thundering goth-rocker with spooky lyrics and vocals that roars like rutting bear that has just woken up from its slumber. After two tunes from the upcoming album, the first single "Leviathans" and now "Hour Of The Wolf" it sounds promissing and it will be intressting to see what they have coocked up this time to follow up the great 2018 album "Down Below".

Jonathan Hultén - Chants From Another Place

Monday, a new week and it's time for the annual "Record Of The Week".

"Chants From Another Place" is a tale of spiritual death and rebirth, it will thematically take you through landscapes of ecstasy, passing mountains of death and rebirth, sailing seas of adventure, traversing wastelands of despair and forests of myth. It is an inward journey and only time can tell which places will be visited under its duration.

Jonathan Hultén’s inspiration is drawn from a capella folk and church choir compositions, where classic artists such as Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkel, Bert Jansch, and John Martyn is by his side in mind and is something that seeps through the landscape he has created.

The album was recorded solely by Hultén in his studio in Stockholm, Sweden, and was mixed by Ola Ersfjord from Cuervo Recording Service in Madrid, Spain. That he only has one guest artist (percussionist Nacho Montero) on the tune "Outskirts" shows that he mastered his creation in an absolutely magnificent way, that he then does everything entirely himself where the result becomes absolutely brilliant is simply world-class.

The cover art is a self-penned portrait, reflecting the melancholy found within the songs on the album and insight into Hultén’s unique persona. He has also designed amazing beer bottle labels in collaboration with Macken Brewery. Check out Hultén’s gallery on his website.

Jonathan Hultén is also known as the guitarist in blackened-death metal vampires TRIBULATION.

"Chants From Another Place" is a really lovely cozy, incredibly stylish and well-made album which touches deeply and provides a calm that I did not think existed in these times, simply loves what I hear. Hultén has clearly put everything on this, blood sweat and tears from the bottom of his heart that echoes his most personal intimate thoughts.

Tunes like "A Dance In The Road", "The Mountain", "Where Devils Weep", "The Call To Adventure", "Wasteland" follows the acoustic folkish way where the hypnotic vocal harmonies reflecting the melancholy in his lyrics. Tunes where the chanting vocal harmonies are the dominant instrument, like "Holy Woods" and "Ostbjorka Brudlat", that shows another side of Hultén's mastermind. The same way goes for the tune "The Roses", a truly lovely piece with hymns and a clean powerful vocal that flows out in a chanting vocal harmony. The two instrumental tunes "The Fleeting World" a piano-driven piece and "Outskirts" with Nacho on percussion are two real beauty's that breaks up the ordinary playlist in an excellent way. "Deep Night" closes the album with an atmospheric monastic vocal in the best possible way. The final result is completely stunning. A real masterpiece that floors me totally, am I getting old?

Sum: "Chants From Another Place" is a folkish masterpiece.

Hultén was going to join Chelsea Wolfe on tour, opening for her "Birth Of Violence" acoustic tour in the UK & Europe in March 2020. But sadly the all shows got canceled due to the COVID-19 situation, venues closing, and new travel bans.

Today's tune "The Mountain", is one of the singles from the album. It is a potent yet minimalistic ode to loss and hope. Telling a tale of soul in distress, goes forth on a journey and faces death, transformation and rebirth is accompanied by a stunningly emotive animated video, created by Jonathan Hultén himself, taking visual influence from the likes of Tolkien, Tove Jansson and art nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.

Tribulation - Nightbound

Sweden’s blackened goth rockers TRIBULATION with their fourth full-length opus "Down Below" takes the 1st place on the Tune Of The Day's TOP 50 album list of the Best Albums 2018.

TRIBULATION, a band that continues to evolve, lots of new ideas have implemented both musically and artistically. A development that sounds great for my ears and the graphics for my eyes, including a new cool band logo.

Every note on the album evokes a spooky hazy mystique that welds the occult themes of the darkness and evil. A well crafted story that is grievously seduced by the damned. Tribulation - Down Below

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Sweden’s blackened goth rockers TRIBULATION have released their new and fourth full-length opus "Down Below".

With the critical acclaim 2015's "Children Of The Night", it's with big pressure to overcome the last release and keep the creation on top and release an another great album.

The band continues to evolve, lots of new ideas have implemented both musically and artistically. A development that sounds great for my ears and the graphics for my eyes, including a new cool band logo.

"Down Below" continues to embracing the dark side and explore the fears. The horror and spooky feeling over the tunes are overwhelming. They mostly inspired by the microcosms within themselves but still allow drawing parallels to the current state of the world. The album opens with the lead single "The Lament", a spooky rhythm section by Adam Zaars and Jonathan Hulten and soaring leads until Johannes raging and horrific vocals approach.  "Nightbound" is a beautiful piece of music creation, melodic guitars that guides you around in the darkness together with the newcomer drummer Oscar Leander. The second single "Lady Death", Black Madonna, Release your unbridled rage upon my soul... is a catchy rocker. "Subterranea" with a awesome melodic piano it opens up like Pandoras box and unleash the fear. "Purgatorio"is an instrumental lullaby, something for your children? "Cries From the Underworld" is a spiritual piece with calculated guitar harmonies. "Lacrimosa" is a gothic piece, Churches, monkes and bells, signing "Black wings of death unfold Sancta Mater Dolorosa".  The goth inspired tunes continues on "The World", great vibe in the harmony and the dark vocals. The album closes up with the massive musical creation "Here Be Dragons", where they mix progressive rock with mystic dark atmosphere.

The album artwork is painted by Jonathan Hultén, showing a fierce grotesque and hidden Madonna that are watching over the shadows of Stockholm. The album was produced by Martin Ehrencrona and was released on January 26th through Century Media.

Tribulation - The Lament

The Swedish death metallers TRIBULATION are back with a brand new cut "The Lament" taken from the upcoming album "Down Below" will be released on January 26th, 2018.

The band formed in 2005 in Arvika, Sweden. In early 2009, the band released its debut studio album "The Horror". Their second full length studio album "The Formulas of Death" was released in 2013. In 2015, they released their third full length studio album "Children of the Night". Though their debut album sits firmly within the old school death metal genre, their later albums are a radical departure from this sound, drawing significantly on traditional heavy metal, psychedelic rock, gothic rock, as well as the occult and supernatural mythology. The fourth album "Down Below" will be released next year. Preceding the album release they are releasing an EP "Lady Death" that will be released on December 22nd.

Some Comments on the producer and director of the latest Video, Robert Piel.

"We always plant strange seeds, seeds that when fully grown and ripened have taken their own often unexpected twists and turns. When working with this video we got to share that process with someone else who is also planting strange seeds. Director and producer Robert Piel approached us and wanted to make a collaboration, which was something that we gladly accepted after seeing his previous work and after seeing how well we got along and how our cinematic references really overlapped. It’s rare that you find people who have that creative spark that lacks in most of us and the discipline to fully get the job done. Robert and his entire crew had that! They all put a lot of effort and work into this and we all gladly endured the long and cold German nights. We hope you all enjoy our artistic amalgamation!"

Second Sun - Autonomic Pilot

The single "Autonomic Pilot” is following the success of last year's debut LP "Hopp/Förtvivlan” by the electric folk/space rock project SECOND SUN of Jakob Ljungberg, drummer of Swedish Death Metal band TRIBULATION.

What started as a solo project (with Ljungberg performing all of the instruments) has now become a fully realized live rock band, with the 'Autonomic Pilot' session being the first recorded output of SECOND SUN mach II. Joining Ljungberg are Jakob Enlund (HUNT) on drums, Sofia Rydahl (ex-GRÄVMASKIN) on keyboards and longtime collaborator Marcus Hedman on bass. The record is backed with a fantastic, organ-heavy cover of "Sånt Är Livet," which was originally written and performed by Swedish punk band BÄDDAT FÖR TRUBBEL.

The idea was born on New Year's, 2011, when Jakob was listening to the 70's retrospective LP First Daze Here from US Doom Metal pioneers PENTAGRAM. He soon realized SECOND SUN was the perfect outlet for his love of bands like STEELEYE SPAN, NEKTAR, HAWKWIND and BLACK SABBATH as well as traditional Irish folk music. In May 2014, Jakob put eight songs to tape with his friend Marcus Hedman and the result is "Hopp/Förtvivlan” were the words sung entirely in his native Swedish and was released in April 2015 on Electric Assault Records.

Jonathan Hulten - Nightly Sun

The Swedish occult-steeped death metal band TRIBULATION are rumoured to be working on the follow-up to the outstanding brilliant album "The Children Of The Night". The creativity is high in the camp at the moment, the riff maestro Jonathan Hulten is standing on his on legs and have created an marvellous tune "Nightly Sun" that is taken from his upcoming acoustic solo project "Chants From Another Place". It's a completely new territory than we are used to, he is taking a new path that sounds truly exciting and promising.

"Nightly Sun" flows in the same stream as Tim Buckley and Nick Drake, it's heartfelt, moody and spiritually.

That TRIBULATION have been exceeded themselves with a magnificent release as this amaze me, holy moses what a album. With the new record the band continue to embrace their signature sound and shows a really wide spectrum of guitar tones and harmonies. The MORBID ANGEL influence that haunted previous albums have slightly changed to more traditional NWOBHM style and classic heavy metal, but also goth and some progressive rock form the 70's. The aggression and occult overtones are still intact and with Johannes gruff monotone vocals the dramatic parts gets life to the songs. In these days it’s hard to stand out, but TRIBULATION has achieved just that and made the best album of 2015!

In Solitude - Sister

Sweden’s In Solitude will release their third album, “Sister” on October 1st in North America and September 27th/30th in Europe/UK.

Vocalist Pelle Åhman speaks on behalf of In Solitude: “It’s time to release our third album, and things have never felt this clear and pervasive before. This is a feeling that has permeated our whole lives during the latest year of writing and recording this album, as well as digesting and dealing with its consequences. And it has been wonderful, overwhelming and utterly devastating. Which, in the world of In Solitude, are very positive things, and exactly what was required.

“It is a very special album for us, and I am very thankful and proud of my brothers (including our great friend, and producer, Martin Konie Ehrencrona), for this is truly the most visceral music we’ve ever made, and we can’t wait for you to experience it too.

“You come without. And all falls within. There is a light in the world. There is a stone to the head.”

“Sister” was recorded at Studio Cobra in Stockholm, Sweden during March 2013. The album was produced and mixed by Martin “Konie” Ehrencrona and stands as a logical next step above and beyond its predecessor, “The World.The Flesh.The Devil.” In Solitude’s strength resides in their ability to craft dark and oppressive atmospheres within the auditory realm of classic heavy metal.

The album concludes with an 8-minute track that features guest guitarist Pelle Forsberg (Watain).

North American fans will have an opportunity to see In Solitude live this Fall. The band will be supporting Watain on their “Wild Hunt” tour beginning on October 8th in New York City. The tour also features support from Tribulation. Dates can be found below:
