Eric Wagner - In the Lonely Light of Mourning

TROUBLE frontman and doom icon Eric Wagner’s posthumous "In The Lonely Light Of Morning" is great goodbye to a legend. It always sad to listen to posthumously released albums.

The untimely passing of Eric Wagner in August 2021 robbed the metal world of one of its greatest ever voices. With doom pioneers TROUBLE, and an assortment of other projects, it cuts extra deep to spin this. In an unintended twist of fate, Eric had put the finishing touches on his debut solo album, "In the Lonely Light of Mourning" mere weeks before his passing. It now serves as the definitive swansong for one of doom metal’s most beloved voices.

Eric Wagner’s posthumous solo album, "In The Lonely Light Of Morning", was released March 18th, 2022 via Cruz Del Sur Music.

But, it is doom at its core: Earthy, honest, brooding and heavy -- just the way Eric preferred. "In The Lonely Light Of Morning" also finds Eric at his most vulnerable, with some lyrics suggesting he knew something foreboding was right around the corner. Eric Wagner's legacy is permanently secure in the annals of doom metal. Thus, it is impossible to quantify his impact on the metal scene. His legacy with Trouble is reflected in the countless bands who followed in their wake, purveying the same kind of heartfelt, undeniably heavy doom metal that touches the mind and spirit. Travel on, Eric.

Today's tune "In The Lonely Light Of Morning" is the title track of the latest and posthumous album release, enjoy!

Kryptograf - The Eldorado Spell

It's the Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and a public holiday in some countries. It is the second day of Eastertide. In Western Christianity, it is also the second day of the Octave of Easter, and in Eastern Christianity, it is also the second day of Bright Week.

But still it's Monday so it time to introduce "Record Of The Week". "The Eldorado Spell" is the second album release by the Norwegian four-piece KRYPTOGRAF.

This four old souls is inspired by the heavy sound of the late 60's, and they will hex you with their collective vocals, destructive riffs and inventive songwriting. "The Eldorado Spell" is a beauty by it self, where the sound is very 60's inspired with a foot in the psychedelic folk rock and riff heavy doom, nothing orginal at all, but the love for the past and creative minds is what makes them so good. Somehow I just adore when the Scandinavians makes music like this, the joy in thier craftmanship shines true the production and that is something which can be heard immediately from the opening "Asphodel", a marvelous rocker with heavy riffing and amazing vocals, especially the chorus. "Cosmic Suicide" the next tune in line keep the up the quality and deliver a great pace with some cool echos and a great solo. The pace slows down a notch in the more doomier piece "Lucifer’s Hand" while in the groovy "Creeping Willow" the pace is restore a bit and serves us with some cleaver riffing and melody along with a nice jam in the middle. A short folkish interlude of "Across The Creek" paves the way for the title tune "The Eldorado Spell", with a light marching tempo it moves forward determined and cohesive until it fades away and opens the door for the more doomiah and slowly "The Spiral", and after it reaches it's half mark it switches and pushes down the gas for a wile until it falls back in the end. "When The Witches" is an odd one, acid drenched piece that takes out the swing. "Wormwood" is another folkish interlude that makes the way for the final tune "The Wall" that rounds off this work in a really nice way.

Sum: "The Eldorado Spell" is the psychedelic doom buzz you need right now, check this up!

KRYPTOGRAF Is:
Vegard Strand - Guitar / Vocals
Odd Erlend Mikkelsen - Guitar / Vocals
Eirik Arntsen - Drums / Vocals
Eivind Standal Moen - Bass

Today's tune "The Well", taken from "The Eldorado Spell", the album was release on February 25th, 2022 on Apollon Records.

Messa – Pilgrim

MESSA’s rising trajectory hits the stratosphere on their immense new album “Close”. Soaring up out of the Italian Doom Rock underground in 2014, MESSA have been rapidly garnering a frenzied throng of devotees, in thrall to their monumental and broad-ranging sound craft. Releasing two widely celebrated cult records, the latest of which “Feast For Water” in 2018 was a critical breakthrough success, with Rolling Stone calling the whole album “captivating, wringing maximum drama out of its savvy stylistic clash,” Messa have had everyone on tenterhooks, waiting for what was next.

New album “Close” draws us further into MESSA’s spellbinding textures and immersive dynamics. Described as “Stevie Nicks fronting Black Sabbath,” singer Sara’s colossal voice omnipotently carries the listener on an emotional rollercoaster ride where the sonic cauldron of Iommi guitars gives way to Arabian oudh and progressive solos in a masterful style-clash that well befits Messa’s incendiary reputation.

The hushed Fender Rhodes piano intro on opener “Suspended,” picks up where Messa left off on their previous album “Feast For Water” but then collapses gloriously into Jazz guitar and widescreen impassioned crushing riffs, lighting our way for the odyssey ahead. The scene is set magnificently for the journey that “Close” expertly takes the listener on, with MESSA’s obvious care and passion for the album as a pilgrimage of sonic experience. Heavyweight tracks like “If You Want Her To Be Taken” or “0=2” are modern Doom Rock classics that expertly upgrade and leave the genre reeling in their wake. “Pilgrim” and “Orphalese” are woven with tapestries of Mediterranean sounds where oudh and eastern chord phrasings expand Messa’s cinematic palette with a panache that is all their own. Atmospheric and grandiose belters like “Rubedo” and “Dark Horse” build into an almost limitless climax of discord and harmony where blast beats and saxophones descend into a thrilling cacophony that’s a masterclass in artful cutting edge Doom.

Referencing bands like DEAD CAN DANCE, SWANS and OM, MESSA have created an album where song, experience and atmosphere are focused into a crystalline modus where high art flawlessly embraces good old fashioned riff-worship. Transcending the occult and noir-tinted atmospheres of their past works, “Close” confidently weaves Messa’s multifarious influences into a singular breath-taking sound that leaves the listener enthralled. Perfection or something extremely close, MESSA’s “Close” is not just a Metal record, but it’s definitely one of the best things to break out of the confines of Metal in a long time.

Nakh: a ritual dance performed by women along the Algerian/Tunisian border. It features the swaying of the dancer’s head and thrashing of the hair. An altered state of consciousness is induced by the repetitive yet simple movements performed during the dance.

"Close" was recorded between April and May 2021 at Inside Outside Studio in Volpago del Montello (TV). Vocals recorded at La Distilleria in Bassano del Grappa (TV). Recorded and mixed by Maurizio ‘Icio’ Baggio. Mastered by Maurizio ‘Icio’ Baggio and Matt Bordin.

Headbang: slang to nod one’s head violently to the beat of loud rock music.

Sara: Vocals, Lyrics, Percussions
Marco: Bass, 8 Strings Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Vocals, Synth, Dulcimer
Alberto: Guitar, Slide Guitar, 12 Strings Guitar, Oud, Mandolin,
Vocals, Moog Bass, Rhodes Piano, Synth, Percussions
Rocco: Drums, Percussions, Screams

Today's tune "Pilgrim", MESSA’s first single from new album "Close", released in March 2022 by Svart Records.

Dvne - SÍ-XIV

DVNE is a 5-piece metal band from Edinburgh, UK. Taking influences from a myriad of genres including post metal, doom, and progressive rock. Combining fierce riffs and melodic textures, Dvne travels an epic dark sci-fi universe with hints of psychedelia. Long live the Kwisatz Haderach.

DVNE are a band of great contrasts, weaving titanic heaviness and intricate gentleness together, complex lyrical ideas with engaging storylines, and this has only been expanded upon and concentrated on second album "Etemen Ænka". "It's an album that has a narrative musically and we hope will encourage the listener to explore the universe we've created around it," states guitarist/vocalist Victor Vicart. "It is a very dense and layered album which will reward multiple listens, and while this is becoming a recurring aspect of our music, we feel that we went further with it this time. It's also a very polarising album, emotionally speaking. The heavy sections are, well, very heavy, while the clean sections are much more intricate and delicate and in a way wouldn't be out of place in a Studio Ghibli anime soundtrack." Exploring everything in greater depth in every way, it is a profound step forward from 2017's Asheran, starting an exciting new chapter in the existence of one of the most thrilling and imaginative metal bands active today.

Today's tune "SI-XIV" is taken from the new album "Etemen Ænka", released March 19, 2021.

Häxmästaren - Sol I Exil

Monday, new week, time for us to hail a album with "Record Of he Week".

HÄXMÄSTAREN, the Gothenburg’s stoner/doom/sludge behemoths serves us with a release of their explosive sophomore album "Sol I Exil"!

HÄXMÄSTAREN is from Gothenburg, Sweden formed in early 2017. Debut album "Haexprocess" was released in 2018, and the band self released the follow up, "Sol I Exil" in March 12, 2021 and then they signed a deal with the Swedish Majestic Mountain Records for a proper release, the Vinyl got shipped in the end of August, where the wax came in a wicked, transparent gren and yellow haze. Almost looks like an eye of a "HÄXMÄSTARE", lol.

"Sol I Exil" is a flaming sledgehammer of stoner doom and blackened sludge, walking the thin line between blackened sludge and traditional heavy metal. Already from the opening tune "Blood Moon" they serve us with banging hard with breakneck riffage, whiskey soaked vocals that at times gets terribly angry, spits and hisses, the end result is brilliant. "Millennium Phenomenon" is a fablous piece with rumbling bass line and thundering drums along with some ferocious guitar playing, and serves us with a hypnotic guitar riff and searing solos that makes me cringe. "Wavelurker" and "Growing Horns" shows the blackened side of the band, here the musical influence palette gotten some more choices, where the mix of selected ingredients are very wise. The metal is still thick as syrup and wonderfully crunchy on the blackened parts. Where in "Children Of The Mountain" they set fire on the blackened side, the guttural growls haunts out it's own extremities with a surging energy. Some sludgy doom roots in "Dödskult Ritual" and the title tune "Sol I Exil", where the lyrics are sung in their Swedish mother tongue. The later one closes the album with a swinging groove, with some doomy vocals that burst out to the hallowed howls of the damned, cleavery musican ship between the members serves us marvelous drumming, clear and distorted bass and a bautiful guitar handeling. "Sol I Exil" is a marvelous album, highly recomended.

Sum: "Sol I Exil" is a top notch doomy piece that you can't miss!

Today's tune "Sol I Exil", the title tune from the new album, enjoy!

The Skull - The Longing

Today it's a sad day, Eric Wagner has passed away, he died of complications from COVID-19 on August 22, 2021, at age 62 in Las Vegas.

Eric Wagner (April 24, 1959 – August 22, 2021) was an American heavy metal singer who is best known for his work with the doom metal band TROUBLE, which he formed in 1979. He briefly left TROUBLE in the mid-1990s and formed LID with guitarist Danny Cavanagh, resulting in 1997's "In The Mushroom". He also appeared on Dave Grohl's heavy metal side project PROBOT in 2004 with the song "My Tortured Soul".

Wagner rejoined TROUBLE in 2000, and recorded one more album with them, "Simple Mind Condition" (2007), before leaving the band once again in May 2008 to pursue other musical interests and projects.

Wagner had also been recording under the band name BLACKFINGER. He also formed THE SKULL, which features former TROUBLE bassist Ron Holzner and drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson. The band's name is derived from TROUBLEs second album "The Skull".

To remember Eric Wagner we pick a tune from his latest project THE SKULL.

Today's tune "The Longing" is taken from THE SKULLs second album "The Endless Road Turns Dark", released 2018, enjoy!

Alastor - Onwards And Downwards

Monday, time to present last "Record Of The Week" for this season, yes it will back for the next season in August! A little summer holiday.

Swedish doom rockers ALASTOR are back and have hunkered down to summon the 7-tune spooky doomish gospel "Onwards And Downwards" is about (in the words of guitarist Hampus Sandell) “…one person’s gradual slip into insanity. An ongoing nightmare without end. It also sums up the state of the world around us as this year has clearly shown.”

ALASTOR is a four piece band from the southern parts of Sweden who plays psychedelic spooky doom with a focus on heavy riffs on high volume. They combine their love for slow music, grindhouse horror, doom and the occult to invoke a feeling of trance and fear in their listeners. The quartet released its epic 3-song debut album "Black Magic" in early 2017 via Twin Earth Records, followed by the 2-track “Blood On Satan’s Claw” EP on Halloween the same year that also included the excellent cover "Bad Moon Rising", by CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Joining forces with RidingEasy Records in 2018 and released "Slave To The Grave", read about it here!

"Onwards And Downwards" contains seven spooky tunes with a run time of 46 minutes of old-school heavy rock, with a mix between doom metal and psychedelic hard rock. The tunes ozes with occult moods and distorted spookyness along with syrup heavy riffs, engaging melodies, and psychedelic vibes along with great vocals that woven in brilliant to the doomish ocean. The tunes are well written with great hooks and alot of catchy moments that makes this three-quarters a well spent time.

From the opening "The Killer In My Skull" the thick, slightly manic but incredibly well played and performed makes you almost drown in the sluggish liquid batter. Smiling as I gasp for breath when "Dead Things In Jars" creeps in, the distorted sounds makes you almost lose your balance. Almost twenty minutes have passed when it's time for really heavy drums at a slightly faster pace than we are used to when it comes to ALASTOR. This blasting rockers is a real threat on the album that includes a really cool bass groove and piano inlay. Back to the heavy and slower tempo in "Nightmare Trip", an excellent fuzzy piece from the band. "Pipsvängen" is an instrumenta acoustic beautiful piece which gives some respite before it's time for the last two toffees of the almost ten minute title track, a spooky graveyard thingie with some very melodic melody that is really haunting. It also have a great guitar interlude in the end. The ending piece "Lost And Never Found" is another heavy thick piece that closes up with the flag on the top. The album is well produced and sounds really good and organic. This is ALASTORs most accessible album yet and i'm really happy to hear some new tunes from these fellows and I do enjoy this album and highly recommend to get a copy wile you can! Release in May 28th, 2021 via RidingEasy Records

Sum: Die in fire.

Line Up:
Robin Arnryd – Bass, Vocals
Hampus Sandell – Guitar
Johan Björmander – Guitar
Jim Nordström – Drums

Domkraft - Seeds

Monday, new week, let's present "Record Of The Week"

Like a phoenix, DOMKRAFT rise from the ashes of their previous apocalyptic-themed albums with third full-length "Seeds", released April 30, 2021. The latest album from the psychedelic riff-doom trio focuses on the idea of emerging from the ruins to start anew, building something different and better beyond the cataclysm. In the midst of 2020's summer heatwave, the Swedes headed to Welfare Sounds Studio in Gothenburg for three days to nail down a new epic that feels raw and alive with studio heads Kalle Lilja and Per Stålberg. With due credit to the mixing wizardry of Karl Daniel Lidén (GREENLEAF, KATATONIA, LOWRIDER), DOMKRAFT's trademark heft is more prominent than ever, and the ambitious lyrical themes add context to the always-massive riffs and hypnotizing flow. The Crazy-Ass 3-D cover artwork by longtime associate Björn Atldax.

Martin Wegeland - Bass, Vocals
Anders Dahlgren - Drums
Martin Widholm - Guitars

Originally, DOMKRAFT bonded over a mutual love for SPACEMEN 3, MONSTER MAGNET, SLEEP, and HAWKWIND among others. Drawing from the heaviest of their combined influences, the trio from Stockholm crafted a sound that blends towering dirges, mind-bending psychedelia, and hypnotic minimalism, which is embodied by their monolithic 2016 debut album "The End of Electricity" and 2018 follow-up "Flood".

With "Seeds", DOMKRAFT has drawn a detailed map to a groove-driven heavy rock utopia, where humankind can evolve and unite. This psychedelic sludge piece of art has to be heard and watched with 3D glasses to experience fully. The album alternates between the slow-half pace manners with heavy riffing and some breather moments where the slower tempos explode into a more three-quarters bang! The melodic guitars are absolutely wonderful in their monotonous grandeur. Backed by slick and relentless bass licks and thunderous dirty drums and the sludgy and painful vocals makes this an unstoppable force.

From the fantastic opener "Seeds" where they fire off the whole battery that follows up in the "Perpetuator", "Into Orbit" and "Dawn Of Man" until it's time for the fifth tune "Tremors" where we get a more laidback piece that echos in the shadow of the thick mist for a while until the heavy monotonous riffing takes place. The vocals oscillate between the restrained and the slightly mad scream that Martin Wegeland fully masters. "Krank Blekhet" is a short and moody interlude that somehow smooths everything out with a much-needed breathing pause before it's time to end it all with the album closer, "Audiodome", that doesn't waste anything, just blasting off into the stratosphere in a almost ten minutes DOMKRAFT finale without its equal, wonderful, simply wonderful! The album is marvelous crafted, the heaviness is really heavy and more encompassing than ever, I feel completely dull after a lap and just want to play more. DOMKRAFT has again evolved, grown, and created an organic and electric album where they have dignified their experiences in a majestic way. Better living through monolithic volume!

Sum: Follow the "Seeds" on the avenue of pulsating despair, a must-have in your collection!
Got this boxset delivered on Sunday by a long-time friend, thank you for this amazing thing!

Domkraft - Dawn Of Man

Swedish psychedelic riff-doom trio DOMKRAFT are back with a new single and a upcoming album "Seeds".

Like a phoenix, DOMKRAFT rise from the ashes of their previous apocalyptic-themed albums with third full-length "Seeds". On the upcoming album "Seeds" the trio focuses on the idea of emerging from the ruins to start anew, building something different and better beyond the cataclysm. With "Seeds", DOMKRAFT have drawn a detailed map to a groove-driven heavy rock utopia, where humankind can evolve and unite. Better living through monolithic volume!

With live shows obviously a distant pipe dream at the moment, the trio wanted to recreate the experience of one of their performances with, uh, some chemical assistance. Success! Prepare to experience some mind-melting, hypnotic riffs for four minutes and forty four seconds.

Singer/bassist Martin Wegeland has this to say about the song:

“’Dawn of Man’ is the sound of the physical rebuilding of human civilization. We need new places of worship, cleansed of fear, hate and everything else that corrodes a society. So, the idea is a kind of modern pyramids, utopian ‘audiodomes,’ and this song represents the construction phase of these. We went for a mechanical yet earthy feel, based on this rolling, neck-breaking drum beat that just keeps moving. It should feel like being in the middle of a crowd full of clenched fists wielding sledgehammers, unable to stand still.”

"Seeds" will be released on April 30 via Magnetic Eye Records but you can pre-order it here.

Enjoy today's tune "Dawn Of Man", taken from the upcoming album "Seeds"!

Mantar - 100%

Thursday, time for a cover.

"100%" is the first single from SONIC YOUTH's 1992 album "Dirty". It was released in 1992 on DGC. The song was dedicated to the band's friend Joe Cole, who was killed by a gunman in 1991. The lyrics were written by Thurston Moore.

Today's version is made by Germany's destructive duo MANTAR, SONIC YOUTH’s 100% with its skateboarding video and slacker cool vibes was about as commercial as that band got, the tune was release on thier "Grungetown Hooligans II" where the duo have decided to showcase their musical roots and record a DIY covers album of their biggest influences from the 90’s.

Their version of Sonic Youth’s “100%” transforms the original’s disaffected drawl into a significantly heavier, shamelessly headbangable, monster, enjoy today's cover.

Consisting of members of legendary Punk instigators THE STOOGES, the founders of Doom Rock PENTAGRAM, legendary NYC Punk originators TESTORS and infamous Portuguese metal band DAWNRIDER, THE LIMIT break out from the foundations of heavy rock and defy all expectations, to show a new generation what doom and punk really means.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full

Monday, new week and it's time for another "Record Of The Week".

"May Our Chambers Be Full" is a collaboration between the Kentucky folk singer-songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle & Louisiana sludge/doom rockers THOU. Emma Ruth Rundle is know for her dark lyrics and melancholic solo works and has been releasing big bunch of fantastic albums since starting her solo career. In the other hand we have the sludge/doomers THOU that is one of the most acclaimed and consistent DIY metal bands. A mix between these two oddly couple could be an very intressting machup. But somehow it sounds and feels natural. The slightly blackened smooth voice gives the lead heavy, dark and anxious a completely magical angle that as first I didn't was possible.

"May Our Chambers Be Full" is a seven track album, with a spinning time of thirty six minutes. The album opens up with half pace piece "Killing Floor", which from the begining showcase a great fusion between two respectful parties, where Emma Ruth Rundle's lyrics intertwined with the heavier artillery of THOU musical craftmanship. THOU's vocalist Bryan Funck adds some contrast with screamings and deep growling sounds. The heavy doomy grunge rocker "Monolith" give the album a twist where the mind plays back still images of SMASHING PUMKINS that gets hunted by hormone stint Ozzy. "Out Of Existence" is an epic and atomspheric tune, where Funck’s vocal range is marvelous along with Rundle's softiness. "Ancestral Recall" follows the same line as the previous track but with more darkness. "Magickal Cost" is a real beauty in that opens up as a ballad in the best Chelsea Wolfe way until it blows up similar to a violent oil leak when THOU takes over and when Rundle comes back it returns to the more natural state. The album closes up with the nearly nine minutes "The Valley", a gloomy and powerful piece, atmospheric violin (by Louis Michot) caresses Rundle's silky voice, slips forward slowly on safe feet and just before the end of the song simply take the wrong turn and where the collision is a fact when THOU rides in with brutal guitars. "May Our Chambers Be Full" is a remarkable collaboration between musicians from diffrent gengres that knows how to work together and build on each other's skills.

"May Our Chambers Be Full" was released on October 30, 2020 through Sacred Bones Records as a part of the label's 'Alliance Series'. Recording sessions took place in August 2019 at Hightower Studios in New Orleans.

Sum: If there was ever a album made for these worried times, then "May Our Chambers Be Full" is the one.

"The Helm Of Sorrow" is the companion EP to Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou's 2020 collaborative LP, "May Our Chambers Be Full". It was recorded during the same 2019 sessions that yielded the album, and it includes the project's cover of THE CRANBERRIES' "Hollywood." This EP is included in the DIE HARD version of "May Our Chambers Be Full".

Draconian - Under A Godless Veil

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Under A Godless Veil" is the seventh album by the Swedish gothic doom metal DRACONIAN. Since forming in 1994 in Säffle, Sweden, they have established themselves as one of the foremost bands. The five years has past since the last album "Sovran" was released, and it was the first with the new vocalist Heike Langhans. The band is still intact since the previous one and "Under A Godless Veil" follows the same path of its predecessor, but expands their route to prefect the formula they've been working on for such a long time.

"Under A Godless Veil" is a gorgeous creation of dark and slow gothic doom metal, mournful full of melancholy riffing, imposing sorrowful growls by Anders and tender, human hearted clean vocals by Heike. The album will spellbind you completely after the first minute on the opening "Sorrow Of Sophia" and sets the mood and speed how the album will take it's path during the up coming 62 minutes. With it's haunting power and the visceral magic of melody in "The Sacrificial Flame" is just marvelous, or the killer of the single "Sleepwalkers". The doomy "Moon Over Sabaoth" is a really epic piece followed by the atmospheric interlude of "Buried Fields". "The Sethian" is another very powerful and sentimental tune that softens the tear ducts. That heartfelt manner continues in the softish "Claw Marks On The Throne" that gives varying degrees of drama and serenity. "Night Visitor" is touching ballad that breaks well out from the heaviness. Everything ends in a very elegance way of the nine minutes "Ascend Into Darkness" that wraps "Under A Godless Veil" is the best possible way. This is an album that I highly recomend you to get.

Sum: "Under A Godless Veil" is a real goth/doom beauty.
