Renaissance - Can You Understand

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Ashes Are Burning" is the fourth studio album by the British progressive rock band RENAISSANCE, released in 1973. It was the first of several RENAISSANCE albums to feature an orchestra playing along with the band on some songs.

Michael Dunford, who had been working with RENAISSANCE in a composer-only role, had rejoined the band by the time this album was released. However, he wasn't officially part of the band when the album package was designed, so he doesn't appear in the cover photos and is listed as a guest musician.

The song "Can You Understand?" uses a quote from "Tonya and Yuri Arrive at Varykino", a theme from Maurice Jarre's score for Doctor Zhivago. According to David Samuel Barr, a friend of the band who wrote the liner notes for the Tales of 1001 Nights compilation, Dunford had thought this melody to be a public domain Russian folk tune. Because of confusion over the Jarre quote, some live collections (including Live at the Royal Albert Hall : King Biscuit Flower Hour Vol. 1 and some unauthorized releases) mistakenly credit "Can You Understand?" entirely to Jarre. "Can You Understand?" is also cited by Jon Camp as being a case where he and John Tout made major compositional contributions without being credited for them.

In 1978 "Ashes Are Burning" was reissued, together with the preceding album Prologue, as a double album called In the Beginning. While Prologue was reissued in complete form, the Ashes Are Burning song "At the Harbour" was edited down to 3:07. This was because a change in copyright laws in the interim had changed the status of certain early 20th century works, including Claude Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie, excerpts of which begin and end the full version of "At the Harbour". The 1988 CD version of In the Beginning (on one disc) had edited versions not only of this song, but also of "Ashes Are Burning" and of one Prologue song. The early-1990s CD reissue of "Ashes are Burning," on One Way Records (not the 1970s Christian label), contains the full-length version of "At the Harbour". The album was re-issued on CD in its original form by Repertoire Records in 1995.

The Dagger - Ahead Of You All

THE DAGGER is a hard rock/heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden formed in 2009 by Fred Estby, David Blomqvist, Tobias Cristiansson and Tyrant, who are or have previously been involved in bands such as DISMEMBER, GRAVE or NECRONAUT. After auditioning several possible singers and seeing Tyrant exiting the band, Jani Kataja (MANGROVE, SIDEBURN) joined the fold as vocalist by the end of 2012.

While there certainly was a revival of 70’s rock and traditional 80’s metal in recent years, THE DAGGER thought many acts around lacked the right feeling and sound, so they set out to create real classic hard rock / heavy metal rooted in blues rock and perform it simply the way they like to hear it themselves. THE DAGGER stands for eagerly rehearsing, jamming, recording live and writing songs as a unit resulting in an authentic and captivating approach.

The group’s debut 7” single (released via High Roller Records in Summer 2013) and the upcoming “S/T” debut album were recorded at Gutterview Recorders (owned by Fred Estby and Nicke Andersson) in Stockholm, where bands like IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC, ’77, BULLET and MORBUS CHRON already recorded their material.

While legendary acts such as early IRON MAIDEN, DEEP PURPLE, JUDAS PRIEST and RAINBOW obviously left their mark on THE DAGGER, the band does not rely on just resurrecting the 70’s/80’s era of hard rock but focus on quality throughout the entire album offering heavy to-the-point riffing, strong vocal melodies and twin guitar harmonies in spades.

Inspired by the gods … destined to deliver the goods!

• Jani Kataja (ex-SIDEBURN, MANGROVE) - Vocals
• Fred Estby (NECRONAUT, ex-DISMEMBER) -- Drums
• David Blomqvist (ex-DISMEMBER) - Electric Guitar
• Tobias Cristiansson (GRAVE, ex-DISMEMBER) - Electric Bass
• Robert Pehrsson (ROBERT PEHRSSON'S HUMBUCKER, DEATH BREATH) - Electric Guitar

Today's tune "Ahead Of You All" is taken from the self titled debut album, enjoy!

Lake Jons - I Come Clean

LAKE JONS is a finnish trio, formed by a happy accident in 2014. Singer-guitarist Jooel Jons got accompanied by guitarist Jaska Stenroth and drummer Mikko Pennanen.

The trio started working together as LAKE JONS, creating their beautiful folk sound at a garage somewhere in Helsinki. Since then LAKE JONS have played loads of live (mostly in Finland, but I believe that pretty soon overseas) shows and charmed people with their music which combines the spirit of dusty garages, rumbling canyons and nordic woods. Gorgeous vocal harmonies and moods referring to Bon Iver, Josh T. Pearson and Beck are in the center of it all.

Today's tune "I Come Clean" is a single release from the guys!

Coogans Bluff - Beefheart

COOGANS BLUFF is a rock band from Rostock, Germany, formed in 2003. They plays a varied mix of soul, kraut and progressive rock. The band called themselves after the film of the same name Coogans big bluff.

In 2003 four young men decided it was time to show the world how ROCK had to sound in their book. COOGANS BLUFF, named after an old Clint Eastwood movie, was born. Heavily influenced by some of the big players in the history of handmade, iconic rock’n’roll and wildly determined to prove themselves resistant enough to bear the hardships of a musician’s life, Charlie Paschen (drums), Willi Paschen (guitar), Clemens Marasus (bass) and Thilo Streubel (voc) set out to rock the very foundations of a mainstream – ridden world (where everything was pink and digital and popular music sounded like anchovies – flavoured cow poop smells).

A relentless touring schedule gained them a faithful following and some EP’s and Split’s as well as their first Long Player "CB Funk" cemented the band’s reputation as superb songwriters and live performers.

2011 the band relocated to Berlin and "Magic Bubbles" was released. Shortly afterwards Singer Thilo chose to take a short break from the band to take care of family matters. Rather than going on hiatus the rest of the band agreed to not cancel a confirmed gig on the Island of Sardinia at the Duna Jam Festival, instead putting together a live set consisting of instrumental versions, adding a horn section (the same guys who previously lent a hand on "Magic Bubbles") and leaving vocals entirely out of the picture. Rehearsals went down with a bang, to the extent that new songs were written and even bassist Clemens Marasus took the position behind the microphone, impersonating (with considerable success, mind you) an eclectic mix of an early Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and a pitched – down version of Janis Joplin at the height of her polytoxic period. Those new songs marked another era in the history of the Bluffers. 70’s funk with a hint of soul was always part of their music, but this time they nailed it. Play it loud and take a ride with the Poncho Express where we find today's tune!

Today's tune "Beefheart" is taken from the album "Poncho Express", released May 25 2012

Sinner - Road To Hell

SINNER are a German heavy metal band formed by vocalist and bassist Mat Sinner in 1982 (who later joined Primal Fear). They were part of the German heavy/speed/power metal scene. Their latest album, Tequila Suicide, was released in March 31st 2017 and the first taste from it is today's tune "Road To Hell"

Based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Sinner released their first album, "Wild'n'Evil" in 1982. This album, along with the next two ("Fast Decision" and "Danger Zone") were raw affairs, having little in common with the melodic metal they would later become known for. After many personnel changes (including drummer Edgar Patrik leaving to join BONFIRE), the band saw the addition of ACCEPTs Herman Frank on guitars and the release of "Touch of Sin" in 1985. Frank would leave before the next album, 1986's "Comin' Out Fighting", with future U.D.O. guitarist Mathias Dieth replacing him. 1987 saw the release of "Dangerous Charm", a much more melodic album than previous efforts, but shortly after this the band took a break and wouldn't be heard of again for five years.

In 1990 Mat Sinner released a solo album called Back to the Bullet on BMG with a completely new band. Three members of the Mat Sinner band reformed SINNER and released "No More Alibis" in 1992, an album far heavier than anything SINNER had released before. This renewed vigour coupled with songwriting that far exceeded the band's previous releases not only carried on but strengthened with "Respect" in 1994 and "Bottom Line" in 1995, the latter staying in the Japanese national charts for five weeks. SINNER were to reach even higher peaks though, releasing two hugely successful albums with "Judgement Day" in 1997 and "The Nature of Evil" in 1998

In 2000 the band saw its first line-up change in five years as several members left, including guitarist Tom Naumann while ex-HELLOWEEN and GAMMA RAYs Uli Kusch filled in on drums for "The End of Sanctuary". However, in 2003 the previous 1995–1999 line-up renewed itself and released There Will Be Execution before going quiet again for four years. In the past nine years the band had released six albums, each as good, if not better than the last, proving to be the band's most successful period. This success would continue, as after releasing two more albums with PRIMAL FEAR, an album with his pre-SINNER band GODDESS SHIVA and guesting on Tribuzy's debut album, Mat Sinner brought SINNER back to release "Mask of Sanity" in 2007. This album spawned two popular singles in "Diary of Evil" and "Black" and included a faithful rendition of THIN LIZZYs "Baby Please Don't Go".

Thy Catafalque - Sgùrr

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Sgùrr" is the 6th album release by THY CATAFALQUE. Was released October 16, 2015.

For those new to THY CATAFALQUE, it is the solo endeavour of Hungarian multi-instrumentalist Tamás Kátai, who moved to Scotland several years ago. He plays a version of black electronic folkish avant-garde metal world music.

"Sgùrr" (the title of which is Scottish Gaelic for “The Top of a Mountain”).

"Sgùrr" is an violent poetic and atmospheric dark journey true the Scottish Highlands all the way to the Hungarian Lowlands, the songs are about water, mountains, their interrelationship, and the symbols attached to them. The album is very playful with a joyful ambient harmony and gritty, pummelling black metal and monumental doom-inspired riffs.

The album starts and ends “Zúgó” (Pt.1 and Pt.2) with a narrates words by Viktória Varga, in Hungarian about the passage of rapids, the sounds of water carving through mountains over eons of time. "Alföldi Kozmosz" is an electronic folkish tune, beautiful melody with almost a dancing beat. "Oldódó Formák a Halál Titokzatos Birodalmában" is a more than 15 minutes, were hard-driving drum rhythms coupled with hard and lightly aggressive guitars with a blackness feeling. "A Hajnal Kék Kapuja" is an instrumental piece, here he shows the beauty of his travels. "Élo Lény" is a more intense piece, heavy and hard with folkish approach. "Jura" is black-ended all the way, fast and heavy, dark and ugly. "Sgùrr Eilde Mòr" continues where "Jura" ends, but with a much bigger spectrum and length. "Keringo" is the last proper tune, a half pace until the drums and guitar enters half the way to give the tune some contrast until is almost fades out in a beautiful violin solo.

Vinyl of "Sgùrr"

Sum: "Sgùrr" is something totally different, if you do not listen with blinders so you should definitely try this.

Today's tune "Oldódó Formák a Halál Titokzatos Birodalmában" is taken from "Sgùrr", enjoy!

The Faces - Stay With Me

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Stay with Me" is a tune written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, was first recorded by their band FACES for the 1971 album "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse". The song has also appeared on various FACES compilations and on albums by both songwriters. The lyrics describe a woman named Rita with "red lips, hair and fingernails" he "found... down on the floor"; the singer proposes a one-night stand on the condition that she must be gone when he wakes up, although he does offer to pay her cab fare home.

The song was the first and biggest American hit for the FACES, although Rod Stewart scored his massive solo hit "Maggie May" four months before "Stay With Me" was released in November 1971. In "Maggie," which is based on a true story, Stewart is the object of sexual conquest. Psychologists could have a lot to say about this one!

This has been covered by ELF featuring Ronnie James Dio (1972), Elkie Brooks (1978), Rod Stewart with Kim Carnes and Tina Turner (1982), Rod Stewart himself (1993), MANIC STREET PREACHERS with Bernard Butler on guitar during their 1994 European tour and DEF LEPPARD (August 5, 2002). Plus as a B-Side on the "Do Ya" single by McFly.

Steve Hackett - Behind The Smoke

The old school progressive rocker Steve Hackett is back with a brand new video "Behind The Smoke" to promote his latest and twenty-fifth solo release "The Night Siren" that was release on Mars 24th at InsideOut Music.

Hackett had been working on his singing "since 1981" and marks his vocals on "The Night Siren" as the first time he "actually felt like a vocalist" and cited the style of American singer Tim Rose as an influence. Hackett describes the album as "a bird's eye view of the world of a musical migrant ignoring borders and celebrating our common ancestry with a unity of spirit, featuring musicians, singers and instruments from all over the world. From territorial frontiers to walled-up gateways, boundaries often hold back the tide. But while the night siren wails, music breaches all defences".

Some sections on the album was longer than what appeared in the final version, leaving Hackett to edit them down as he noticed a "sense of let's get to the point" and had been prone to develop long sections or song introductions in the past. He intended to make a more accessible album, and after listening back to it, enjoyed making it. "Behind the Smoke" centres around the historical plight of refugees. "West to East" reflects on the effects of war and hope for a better world and features orchestral and choral arrangements. Hackett sees the two tracks as companions to each other; the former originated from a lyric that his wife Jo came up with: "Behind the smoke it's black". Hackett's brother John Hackett plays the flute on some tracks. "Anything But Love" contains a mixture of styles, opening with flamenco guitar to become a rock song with an electric guitar solo to finish. The change of style and joining them together in the studio was particularly demanding.

On the composition, Hackett adds, "we've got 20 people from all around the world all working together ... although it's a rock album there are some big differences." The album also contains influences from the Beatles' psychedelia phase and classic science fiction.

Stephen Richard "Steve" Hackett (born 12 February 1950) is an English musician, songwriter, singer and producer who gained prominence as the guitarist of the English progressive rock band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. Hackett contributed to six Genesis studio albums, three live albums and seven singles before leaving to pursue a solo career. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

Knogjärn - Bitar Av Glas

The Swedes punkrockers KNOGJÄRN have released a new single and video "Bitar Av Glas". The tune is taken from the upcoming album "Bitar Av Glas", set to be release during spring.

Singing in their native language makes the band stand out. The music is a mixed style of metal and punk, reminds a little bit of the Norwegian KVELERTAK.

"Bitar Av Glas" ("Pieces of Glass") is about what happens to our soil and how we treat it. A subject that may seem tricky but still extremely important, especially in the political situation prevailing in the world. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. The tune is filmed by Emelie Hanhe, Klara Olsson & Allixandra Jonasson. Music is recorded at BigBalls Production.

Tombs - Cold

The avant-garde metal band TOMBS from Brooklyn, New York, is up for a brand new track ”Cold" and an upcoming album "The Grand Annihilation”

The band's sound has been described as a combination of multiple metal styles, styles which include black metal, hardcore, doom metal, and sludge metal. Band front man Mike Hill does not regard their sound to be sludge metal. Rather, he has likened the group's sound to being more black metal inspired. Citing influences, Hill has named bands such as NEUROSIS, SWANS, JOY DIVISION, DARKTHRONE, BLACK FLAG, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, LEVIATHAN and BAUHAUS among others, as being influential to the group's sound.

TOMBS front-man Mike Hill is not a man interested in appeasing his existing audience or modifying the music he makes in the hope of luring in a broader one. Letting the songs come as and when inspiration hits him is integral to Hill's process, and this accounts in part for "The Grand Annihilation’s" diversity. The blasting, scathing yet melodic black metal savagery of opener "Black Sun Horizon" and "Way Of The Storm" are very much built to destroy, while wielding a poignancy that is undeniable - both of which stand in strong contrast to the uncomfortable post-punk squall of "Underneath" that showcases Hill's Nick Cave/Ian Curtis-esque singing voice, while the likes of the throbbing "Saturnalian" and unnerving tribal thunder of "Walk With Me In Nightmares" stand in categories all of their own. While every track on "The Grand Annihilation" stands separate from those around it, it is still a cohesive collection, and at no point do the stylistic twists and turns undermine its coherence. "If you've been following Tombs, you probably know to expect the unexpected, and I always strive to present a full range of emotion on everything with the band's name on it," Hill explains. "That said, this is a very dark and introspective record that digs deep into the common ideas of mortality, infinity and cosmic mysteries. The lyrics on the new record are a celebration of freedom through embracing the dark side. Once you realize that you follow the dark path - the path of the individual - there is a certain feeling of liberation that accompanies it.”

Today’s tune "Cold” is taken from the album "The Grand Annihilation”, set to be released June 16, 2017.

Troubled Horse - Revolution on Repeat

Monday, even if it’s Sunday here in Sweden it’s still a new week, so let’s introduce ”Record Of The Week"

"Revolution on Repeat” is the latest release from the Swedish garage rockers TROUBLED HORSE. The album was released Mars 31.

Formed in 2003 in their hometown of Örebro (also home to WITCHCRAFT), the Horse crew erupted into the consciousness of riff-worshippers everywhere with a low-key seven-inch vinyl release in 2010, and then their debut album "Step Inside", which was released by Rise Above Records in 2012. An invigorating whirlwind of spiky garage rock, propulsive psychedelia and thunderous, overdriven soul-meets-doom riffing, Step Inside showcased a band with little interest in current or nostalgic trends, instead revelling in a consciously classic but undeniably fresh new take on the most revered and ageless of musical components.

"Revolution on Repeat” is taken the next step forward since their debut album "Step Inside”. The album is righteous mix of the old school rock where the base is garage rock. It’s hard and bluesy rock that is spiced up with psychedelia and some pun. Even if the band bread the same air as WITCHCRAFT, GRAVEYARD and other classic 70’s retro band they stand out from the crowd, as I could say that they sound more as THE HELLACOPTERS with a 70’s approach. First thing that hits me after a few spins that these guys really enjoy what they are doing and they puts in everything that they got in this project. It’s a very fun, soulful album. With a a clean and crisp production you will get some nice listening hours.

The musicians are doing amazing work on "Revolution on Repeat”, album fires off with a real smoker ”Hurricane”, a galloping garage rocker then saddle to an old funky country riffages in "The Filthy Ones” with a vocal performance that will give you goose bumps, he screams, shouts and signs likes his intestines leaves the body. ”Which Way to the Mob” is a melodic rocker where Martin Heppich almost sounds like Nicke Andersson. ”Peasants” is a pulsations bluesy tune with a punk attitude to "The Haunted” where the doomish sound appears, in the middle of the tune they let loose of some marching drums and heavy riffing. ”Desperation” is a half pace swampy country/garage rocker with 60’s approach. "Track 7” stands out a bit, heavy riffing, punkish, bluesy and doomish to the great swampy desert country version of WARREN ZEVONs "My Shit’s Fucked Up”. ”Let Bastards Know” is a classic Swedish garage rocker. The album closes with the half pace start in ”Bleeding” to sparkle out to something furious until it falls back a bit to take some air until it fires off again, the tune fades out in the end right in the middle of the beauty part, wtf!

Sum: "Revolution on Repeat” is a really fun record that you should own!

Today’s tune ”Hurricane” is the first single taken from "Revolution on Repeat”, Video directed by Olle Forestam Wijkander. Enjoy!

Van Halen - Everybody Wants Some

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Everybody Wants Some!!" is the second track on American hard rock band VAN HALENs third studio album "Women and Children First” (released on March 26, 1980). It is one of the band's most popular songs, starting as a concert highlight throughout the band's early career.

Today’s tune is rife with experimental features including a "jungle" drum-vocal introduction and some new guitar playing techniques from guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The drum-vocal interlude or breakdown section has an improvised feel, with Roth ad-libbing conversational dialogue; for example, he begins the section by saying “I like…” before being cut off by Eddie striking a guitar chord.

The song was a staple on all of the tours with Roth following its release. Often, the band would stop in the middle of the song and Roth would chat with the crowd for several minutes before finishing the song. In later years, with their later lead singers, VAN HALEN would use the opening drum beat from this song as an introduction into "Panama."

Eddie Van Halen played the solo for this with both hands on the freeboard of his guitar. At concerts, he used a board to support the guitar and free up his hands so he could play it.

For the first line in the second verse, Roth meant to sing "I've seen a lot of people just looking for a moonbeam," but forgot the words when he was recording it and just slurred out some gibberish that came close. They liked the attitude in the vocal, so they kept it anyway. The resulting lyric became the topic of wide speculation, but it couldn't be misheard because it was misspoken to begin with.

The song appeared in the 1985 comedy Better Off Dead in a humorous claymation scene. It is also features in the 2009 horror-comedy Zombieland. It also features in the 2016 Richard Linklater film Everybody Wants Some!!

Enjoy today’s tune and Happy Easter.

VAN HALEN had a notable effect on the modern rock music tour with their use of the concert technical contract rider. They were one of the first bands to use contract riders to specify a "wish list," a practice now used throughout the music industry. They pioneered extensive requirements including power availability and stage construction details. The band's demands were not limited to technical issues; their now-infamous rider specified that a bowl of M&M's, with all of the brown M&M's removed, was to be placed in their dressing room. According to David Lee Roth, this was listed in the technical portion of the contract not because the band wanted to make capricious demands of the venue, but rather as a test of whether or not the contract had actually been thoroughly read and honored, as it contained other requirements involving legitimate safety concerns. If the bowl was present, then the band members could safely assume the other, legitimate, items in the technical rider were being fulfilled to their satisfaction. Conversely, if the bowl was missing, or brown M&M's were present, then the band members would be within their rights to have the venue inspect the work, ask it be redone, etc. Their concern for safety was real: during their earlier tours, not only had equipment been damaged, but several members of their road crew were nearly electrocuted, both due to inadequate safety measures and preparation on the part of the local venue.

The Night Flight Orchestra - Midnight Flyer

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA are back with a brand new single "Midnight Flyer" from the upcoming album "Amber Galactic”, set to be released on the 19th of May.

And i must scream out loud!!! HOLY CRAP! This is awesome, Björn ”Fucking" Strid, you are my idol!

He comments the tune.

”»Amber Galactic« is a relationship drama set in space, the first classic rock space opera on double vinyl. As seasoned musicians, we’re taking this project seriously, although we might come across as slightly retrofuturistic at times, there’s no irony involved. It’s just us trying to shape our future into a place where our race is led by female space commanders with pearl necklaces and a quasar sense of gravity. »Amber Galactic« is about setting free from genre boundaries and expectations that are put on people like us. We just want to create music that we would like to hear ourselves, but that isn’t only for us.

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA is here to set you free, to invite you to enjoy music in whatever form it is presented. For this particular journey, we’d like you to follow us into space, but who knows where we’ll go next! After entering the NFO universe, you won’t ever be the same!”

Crazy Lixx - Wild Child

The Swedish glam metal band CRAZY LIXX will be celebrating their fifteenth anniversary as a band with the release of their fifth studio album, “Ruff Justice”! Set to be release on April 21.

“Ruff Justice”, the 10-track sleaze metal gem that harkens back to the best of ‘80s hard rock, draws inspiration from not only music, but 1980’s horror and action flicks and is a glowing reminder that pretty much everything was better in the 80’s. With its big choruses, memorable hooks and riffs, impressive guitar solos and a massive production by Danny Rexon and Chris Laney, this album is sure to resonate with old fans and new listeners alike.

“We’ve tried the same ‘all killers-no fillers’ approach that we’ve gone for on our previous albums, but this time, more than ever, I think we’ve come close to that vision,“ says lead singer and producer Danny Rexon.

“Ruff Justice” will be the first CRAZY LIXX album to feature the new lineup of Chrisse Olsson and Jens Lundgren handling the axes.

“It does bring a certain feel to the album that I think we’ve been missing since the days of ‘New Religion’ (2010). Once again the whole band pulls in the same direction and the end result, I believe, will be very well received among those who hold ‘New Religion’ in high regards. If I would compare Ruff Justice to any of our previous albums, that would have to be the one,” Danny Rexon concludes.

The album also includes two songs which have appeared on the “Friday The 13th” videogame soundtrack: “XIII” and “Live Before I Die”. Friday the 13th: The Game is an upcoming survival horror video game developed by Gun Media and IllFonic, and published by Gun Media. It is scheduled for release in early 2017 for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Today's tune "Wild Child" is taken form the upcoming album “Ruff Justice”
