Kadavar - The Isolation Tapes

The three-piece psychedelic kraut rockers KADAVAR is back with their sixth record "The Isolation Tapes".

While KADAVAR’s musical development has always been about liberation and pushing the boundaries of the retro rock genre, this is yet one bigger step into a cosmos where the dogma of the classic trio approach is left behind completely. You’ll hear triple vocal harmonies and trippy guitar solos gently riding on an ocean of vintage synthesizers, the tectonic plates of drum and bass calmly pushing from down below.

"The Isolation Tapes" contains a wide palette of another creative output from KADAVAR, everything is made during the Corona Pandemic. Everything changes as the world stands still and so does rock bands all over the world, some are creative with new view on things and thier music shows that, espasially KADAVAR, where thier influences spreads of progressive rock and old kraut rock, where the distinct vocals is the same while the lyrics is well thought out, the riffing has grown to a more psychedelic comsic and progressive vibe, the music in whole has gotten to be very atmospheric, with a big krautrock feeling from the 70's, partly very PINK FLOYD alike. The album have 10 tunes with a three quater of playtime and it opens up with a five piece suite consisting of (I - "The Lonely Child", II - "I Fly Among the Stars", III - "Unnaturally Strange (?)", IV - "(I Won't Leave You) Rosi" and V - "The World is Standing Still") where the FLOYD seeps through the sound. The second half of the album mainly put their focus on a atmospheric soundscape that could be used as a soundtrack to romantic drama. The beautifully "Everything Is Changing" stands out abit with its electronic keys in the melody. Big harmonies in "The Flat Earth Theory", mellotron heavy "Peculiareality (!)" and the laidback and big ending of "Black Spring Rising - Ilgen-Nur". The album sounds excellent in my ears, it's very softish album to be KADAVER and very unexpected, but it's done with a big heart during times like this and where the heavyness has been left in the idea box for future use. In general, the guys creativity seems to have no limits.

„It all came at once, and there was no way to fight it“, says the guitarist and lead vocalist Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann. „No more touring, stay at home, put everything on hold. With all the downsides of the lock down, there were a few days when I just felt free as a bird. I was out of reach, and it was alright. It has been a while since I have felt like that actually. And I believe we all needed it. We were able to just drift along and make music of whatever came to our minds.“

Drummer Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt: „We used to have sort of a clear vision once we started making a record. And making a connection to the previous record was always part of it. This time, it was different. We had no orientation, no expectation towards ourselves, I might even say. Corona took our gravity…“

The album was released on October 23, 2020 as CD and in various Vinyl variations, including some colors with additional art prints (6 x 111 pieces each = 666 pieces) by various artists. All vinyl versions (including those without art prints) are already sold out before publication!

Today's tune "Eternal Light (We Will Be OK)" is taken from "The Isolation Tapes", enjoy!

Wucan - Am I Evil?

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Am I Evil?" is a song by British heavy metal band DIAMOND HEAD released on their 1980 debut album "Lightning To The Nations". The song was written by vocalist Sean Harris and guitarist Brian Tatler and released on Happy Face Records, a label owned by the producer Muff Murfin of The Old Smithy studio of Worcester. The song was immediately popular among the heavy metal circles in the United Kingdom around the time of its release, but only rose to international prominence after METALLICA covered it as a B-side on their "Creeping Death" single in 1984; the cover was re-released on their 1998 covers album "Garage Inc.". The song was influenced by the BLACK SABBATH song "Symptom Of The Universe."

We have played this tune once as a Sunday Classic, read about it here!

Today we have the German Kraut-fueled Heavy Flute Rock band WUCAN that pay tribute to one of their biggest inspirations: DIAMOND HEAD with the tune "Am I Evil?".

The Video Material filmed on several occasions: Dresden 2017, Dresden 2018, Rock Palast 2018 Burg Herzberg

Wucan - The Rat Catcher

Kraut-fueled Heavy Flute Rock is not the daily thing that plays on the radio these days, but you will get it here.

WUCAN is a rock band from Dresden, Germany. The band were formed in 2011 and have released an EP and two studio albums to date. Francis Tobolsky (flute, rhythm guitar, vocals), Tim George (lead guitar) and Patrik Dröge (bass guitar) and Leo Vaessen (drummer).

In December 2011, singer Francis Tobolsky posted an advertisement in a student magazine with the headline 'Blues Brothers Wanted', with the intention of forming a band. Guitarist Tim George and drummer 'Pätz' joined Tobolsky for rehearsals throughout 2012 and the band's first line-up was complete when Patrik Dröge joined on bass in November the same year.

Throughout 2013, WUCAN started songwriting, recording and playing their first gigs as a band. They had also released demos and singles on YouTube.

In July 2014, Pätz left the band shortly after the recording of the debut EP Vikarma. His replacement was a new drummer 'Ollie', who remained with the band for six months before leaving and was replaced by a further drummer 'Marc'.

In February 2015, the band started preparing for their first studio album. A month later they were the main support act for SIENA ROOT during their tour of mainland Europe. Marc only lasted two months in the band before being replaced with Leo Vaessen who was brought in for recordings for the debut album "Sow The Wind".

Their second studio album, "Reap The Storm", was released in September 29, 2017.

WUCANs music can be described as heavy 70s influenced folk rock with hints of stoner and doom. Fans and critics often compare the band's sound to JETHRO TULL, because of the continuous use of flute, and BLACK SABBATH. WUCAN fit into the 'retro rock' subgenre along with fellow German bands KADAVAR and ZODIAC, with the former previously using WUCAN as main support on a number of occasions.

Today's tune "The Rat Catcher" is taken from the album "Reap The Storm", enjoy!

Coogans Bluff - Beefheart

COOGANS BLUFF is a rock band from Rostock, Germany, formed in 2003. They plays a varied mix of soul, kraut and progressive rock. The band called themselves after the film of the same name Coogans big bluff.

In 2003 four young men decided it was time to show the world how ROCK had to sound in their book. COOGANS BLUFF, named after an old Clint Eastwood movie, was born. Heavily influenced by some of the big players in the history of handmade, iconic rock’n’roll and wildly determined to prove themselves resistant enough to bear the hardships of a musician’s life, Charlie Paschen (drums), Willi Paschen (guitar), Clemens Marasus (bass) and Thilo Streubel (voc) set out to rock the very foundations of a mainstream – ridden world (where everything was pink and digital and popular music sounded like anchovies – flavoured cow poop smells).

A relentless touring schedule gained them a faithful following and some EP’s and Split’s as well as their first Long Player "CB Funk" cemented the band’s reputation as superb songwriters and live performers.

2011 the band relocated to Berlin and "Magic Bubbles" was released. Shortly afterwards Singer Thilo chose to take a short break from the band to take care of family matters. Rather than going on hiatus the rest of the band agreed to not cancel a confirmed gig on the Island of Sardinia at the Duna Jam Festival, instead putting together a live set consisting of instrumental versions, adding a horn section (the same guys who previously lent a hand on "Magic Bubbles") and leaving vocals entirely out of the picture. Rehearsals went down with a bang, to the extent that new songs were written and even bassist Clemens Marasus took the position behind the microphone, impersonating (with considerable success, mind you) an eclectic mix of an early Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and a pitched – down version of Janis Joplin at the height of her polytoxic period. Those new songs marked another era in the history of the Bluffers. 70’s funk with a hint of soul was always part of their music, but this time they nailed it. Play it loud and take a ride with the Poncho Express where we find today's tune!

Today's tune "Beefheart" is taken from the album "Poncho Express", released May 25 2012

Föllakzoid - Electric

FÖLLAKZOID began seven years ago as a trance experience between childhood friends Diego, Juan Pablo, and Domingo from Santiago, Chile. Heavily informed by the heritage of the ancient music of the Andes, the band has learned to integrate this influence with contemporary sounds of their times, creating a rich yet minimal atmosphere.

For III, the band wanted to expand their sound while building an atmosphere with mainly monochords and reiteration. After recording and mixing the album on their own at their studio at BYM Records, they partnered with German electronic maestro Atom TM to flesh out the album’s synth parts. Most of the sounds he provided were atonal electronic sounds, aiming for concrete frequencies and sampled organic glitches. (The Korg synthesizer Atom TM plays on this record was used by Kraftwerk on tour in the '80s.)

III is a four-part minimal sound voyage in which you can hear FÖLLAKZOIDs musical language developing into something more upbeat, obscure, and sharp, yet even simpler in terms of elements.

During the past year, the band played more than 80 gigs, including at Primavera Sound Festival (both Porto and Barcelona), ATP Festival in the UK, Musique Volantes in Lyon, and Lollapalooza Chile. The shows for III, including a confirmed set at Austin Psych Fest in May, should spread the band’s fog-enshrouded gospel to an even wider audience.

FÖLLAKZOID Tour dates:

Oct 25 Pablo Neruda Amphitheatre, Santiago, Chile
Nov 22 Le Guess Who? 2015, Utrecht, Netherlands
Nov 24 Paradiso Kleine Zaal, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Nov 27 Pontins Holiday Centre, Prestatyn, UK
Dec 02 Urban Spree, Berlin, Germany
Dec 06 Geronimo’s FGT, Stockholm, Sweden

Today's tune "Electric" is taken from the latest release "III"

Ainigma - All Things Are Fading

Sunday, time for a classic tune. Today I have dig deep into the pile of odd stuff and found an obscure early 1970's German rock band named AINIGMA, they are from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Their influences were, primarily from British heavy rock/prog/psych, notably ATOMIC ROOSTER. Their sound was rough, trashy, gloomy and dramatic, the atmosphere is in Krautrock/ psych/ spacerock, a pretty good band indeed.

Lead singer Willy Kluter played also organ, Wolfgang Netzer played both bass and electric guitars and sung backing vocals, and Michael Kluter did the drumming.

This german band band was active during 1972 to 1974, and they released only one album titled "Diluvium."

Todays tune "All Things Are Fading" is taken from the one and only album "Diluvium", enjoy

Elder - Compendium

Monday and a new week, which means we'll introduce this week's "Record Of The Week".

The power trio ELDER hailing from Massachusetts who are pulling off some rather powerful rock on their latest and newest release "Lore"

Their second full-length "Dead Roots Stirring", was an amazing album, a Vinyl record that I have been hunting for sometime but not yet been able to obtain. With "Lore" have ELDER continued to developed and push their sound in more dynamic and inspiring directions. It's feels more clear, where the riff's have a more progressive approach and the focus is set to take the listener on a long exploration trip in the valley of psychedelic prog. They also have extended the tunes and peeled down on the vocals to let the melodies speak. The album have a excellent flow without getting to difficult and massive, which I really like. "Lore" is an album that sounds like the cover, just take a look on the stunning artwork made by Adrian Dexter, dream away and you will see the parable.

A quick summery of the album "Lore":

The third full-length album and is a watershed moment in the band's history, a precious stone you must have in your jewellery collection.

The vinyl version features a die-cut cover with two full color reversible LP sleeves, along with a lyrics insert (for maximum customizable fun). Of course you can expect 180g, high quality black vinyl - no funky colors at least for this run - and a free download code.

Today's tune "Compendium" starts off in a classic rock way, with a guitar boogie melody before it hatches to a more heavier, a bit stoner style where the first step takes on the fantastic journey that "Lore" supply!

Circle - Vaellus

Circle is a band with no beginning and no end, and when you think you’ve come upon the conclusion you’re back at the start. Perhaps this describes Circle’s compositional work ethic more than anything. Circle is a west coast rock band, the west coast of Finland, that is. They live in a city called Pori, further north than the capital, Helsinki, and Stockholm, Sweden to the east. With a large student population, and its own jazz festival, Pori also is home to Finland’s most visible underground rock band, Circle.

Circle has been making some of the most original modern rock music since the beginning of the ‘90s. Formed by bassist/guitarist/vocalist/creative wild man Jussi Lehtisalo, the group has been on an endless journey of musical exploration since they began. Besides being consummate players, the band are avid music collectors and enthusiasts; hence, Circle music and records have many stylistic touchstones, most notably Krautrock, artrock, avant garde, prog, and cinematic post rock. Just when you think you’re getting a handle on them, though, you see they also have a deep love of heavy metal, particularly from the 1980s, all manner of punk rock, as well as Velvet-style droning and even country and folk music.

The Circle is a band that I've admired for a long time, really like their innovative mindset, never stuck in old grooves, but always renewed themselves. A band that writes music and lyrics in the language that suites best at the time in the process, so you can hear them sing in English or in their own native language Finish as today's tune is, enjoy!

Todays tune "Vaellus" (Finsih for Hike) is taken from the album "Rautatie", released by Ektro records 2010.

The Movements - The Death of John Hall D.Y.

The Movements, from Gothenburg, Sweden, released the first taste of their new album, Like Elephants 1.

Like Elephants 1 is a very exciting project because, as the title suggests, it is only the first disc of two (Like Elephants 2 is scheduled for release in early 2014). Working out two albums into a unique whole has been innovative, challenging and inspiring for The Movements. What is special about these two albums is that they not only stand strong individually but also create a whole, a kind of continuity, together. The Movements distance themselves from today’s fast-food consumption of songs pulled out of their context and instead dare to demand a greater commitment by the listener who, in return, gets to experience a collection of songs in their intended sequence.

The Movements possess great songwriting skills and has over the years toured most European countries. The Movements’ upcoming album, Like Elephants 1, is being released on October 25th and will be followed by gigs around Sweden and Europe.

The members of the band:

David Henriksson – vocals
Gustaf Gimstedt – keyboards
Christian “Krita” Johansson – guitar
Daniel “Dolly” Petersson – bass
Thomas Widholm – drums

The Movements's just finished thier new music video. The band has been inspired by garage rock from the '60s, space rock and krautrock. They collaborate with producer Björn Olsson (Håkan Hellström). The band was formed in 2002 and has been a frequent live bands ever since. A spacy detail is that they became the first space rock band that got their music played in space by the Swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang.

Todays tune "The Death Of John Hall D.Y." is the first single taken from the forth-coming album Like Elephants 1 (out Oct 25th). Out on 7-inch vinyl and digital on September 27th. Video made by: Patrik Lager in 2013

About the tune:
We wrote the song The Death of John Hall D. Y. on tour when we read a book about a captivating human fate, who lived in the late 1700s and was the son of one of Gothenburg's wealthiest people. John Hall D. Y. inherited his father's wealth but not his mind or interest in business. - John devoted himself instead to music, art and literature and came to die penniless and homeless. The music video was filmed in Pilane, Sweden. The reason was that John Hall is said to have spent his time there.
