The Dagger - Ahead Of You All

THE DAGGER is a hard rock/heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden formed in 2009 by Fred Estby, David Blomqvist, Tobias Cristiansson and Tyrant, who are or have previously been involved in bands such as DISMEMBER, GRAVE or NECRONAUT. After auditioning several possible singers and seeing Tyrant exiting the band, Jani Kataja (MANGROVE, SIDEBURN) joined the fold as vocalist by the end of 2012.

While there certainly was a revival of 70’s rock and traditional 80’s metal in recent years, THE DAGGER thought many acts around lacked the right feeling and sound, so they set out to create real classic hard rock / heavy metal rooted in blues rock and perform it simply the way they like to hear it themselves. THE DAGGER stands for eagerly rehearsing, jamming, recording live and writing songs as a unit resulting in an authentic and captivating approach.

The group’s debut 7” single (released via High Roller Records in Summer 2013) and the upcoming “S/T” debut album were recorded at Gutterview Recorders (owned by Fred Estby and Nicke Andersson) in Stockholm, where bands like IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC, ’77, BULLET and MORBUS CHRON already recorded their material.

While legendary acts such as early IRON MAIDEN, DEEP PURPLE, JUDAS PRIEST and RAINBOW obviously left their mark on THE DAGGER, the band does not rely on just resurrecting the 70’s/80’s era of hard rock but focus on quality throughout the entire album offering heavy to-the-point riffing, strong vocal melodies and twin guitar harmonies in spades.

Inspired by the gods … destined to deliver the goods!

• Jani Kataja (ex-SIDEBURN, MANGROVE) - Vocals
• Fred Estby (NECRONAUT, ex-DISMEMBER) -- Drums
• David Blomqvist (ex-DISMEMBER) - Electric Guitar
• Tobias Cristiansson (GRAVE, ex-DISMEMBER) - Electric Bass
• Robert Pehrsson (ROBERT PEHRSSON'S HUMBUCKER, DEATH BREATH) - Electric Guitar

Today's tune "Ahead Of You All" is taken from the self titled debut album, enjoy!

The Dagger performing Ahead of You All. First act at the Close-Up Boat Thursday September 18th 2014. Poor sound quality, pure awesomeness.

Moonsorrow - Suden Tunti

Jumalten aika ("Age of Gods") is the upcoming seventh full-length album by Finnish pagan metal band MOONSORROW. It is planned for release on April 1, 2016. The first tune out of it is "Suden Tunti" that you can watch below.

The new album will also include two covers, "Soulless" (GRAVE cover) and "Non Serviam" (ROTTING CHRIST cover)

MOONSORROW is a pagan metal band formed in Helsinki, Finland, in 1995. Musically, the band incorporates elements of black metal and folk metal in their sound. The band call their sound "epic heathen metal" and try to distance themselves from the term "Viking metal". They have distanced themselves from other folk metal bands, emphasizing that their music is pagan and spiritual and is challenging for its listeners, rather than happy or danceable. The band members have varying levels of pagan belief but they draw on pagan spirituality for lyrics and inspiration.

Today's tune "Suden Tunti" (Wolf's Hour) is taken from the album "Jumalten Aika". Century Media Records 2016.

Entombed A.D. - Kill To Live

The Swedish death metalheads "Entombed" have released a video "Kill To Live" taken from their latest release "Back To The Front".

Entombed is a Swedish death metal band which formed in 1987 under the name of Nihilist. Entombed began their career as an early pioneer of Scandinavian death metal which initially differed from its American counterpart by its distinct guitar tone. However, by the early 1990s their sound had broadened to include garage rock and other influences. This new style would eventually be described as death 'n' roll. Entombed have been influenced by bands such as Slayer, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Autopsy, Repulsion, Kiss, The Misfits, Motörhead and Discharge.

On January 21, 2014 it was announced that the Petrov/Dahlstedt/Elgstrand/Brandt line-up of the band would henceforth be known as Entombed A.D. and that the new album would be released under that name. It was also stated that any shows announced using the name Entombed would not feature this line-up.

The band name is on hold. According to an interview in Sweden Rock Magazine #3 / 2014, with L-G and Nico, the name Entombed is now owned by all four original members, Alex Hellid, L-G Petrov, Uffe Cederlund and Nicke Andersson and is not to be used until further notice.

Grave - Morbid Ascent

1988 was the birth year for Skrillex, Rihanna but also it was the year when Grave – previous Corpse – created delightful death symphonies with the release of their first demo, ”Sick disgust eternal”, which was similar to the brutality Nihilist and Carnage put together in Stockholm at the same time. Grave – together with Entombed, Dismember and Unleashed – has since then marched in the forefront of what would be called Swedish death metal and worshipped by metal heads all over the world.

Last week on August 26 did Grave’ release the new EP  ”Morbid ascent” (Century Media). The fact is that Grave also celebrates 25 years as a band, and this is worth honouring to say the least! On Friday September 6 (Today, This Evening) the mighty Grave – Ola Lindgren (vocals and guitar), Ronnie Bergerstål (drums, ex-Centinex), Tobias Cristiansson (bass, ex-Dismember) and Mika Lagrén (guitar, Facebreaker) – will perform songs from all their albums, as well as a handful of demo songs and other goodies from their career, at Debaser Medis in Stockholm. This is probably one of those gigs you want to be able to tell the grandkids about!"

Just some info about our merch that will be available on the Stockholm gig this friday.
New shirt design limited to 100 pieces, the new EP "Morbid Ascent" of course and then this little gem. Reissue of our first 7" "Tremendous Pain" which was originally released in 1991. Needless to say, bring cash for all the goodies..

Will be sold for 666 sek on the 6th of september at the anniversary show in Stockholm. For this evening we will only be able to offer 10 - 15 rings since they are handmade so these will be very exclusive for that night.

So, todays tune "Morbid Ascent" is the title track from the new EP.

The Resistance - Clearing The Slate

Todays tune might hurt as we have some first class in your face death metal, uncompromising and brutal like a karate chop. Luckily we are talking music and not physical violence. But pure and severe energetic music. We are talking The Resistance. The Swedish Extreme Metal band The Resistance's debut album was released May 10th, 2013. A first tour in selected major markets coincides with the date of release for "Scars", presenting the band to fans and media with full force.

The 12-track album is a pure reminiscence to the good old days of Swedish death metal back in the 80s/90s when berserk bands like Entombed, Grave or Dismember proved how insanely brutal and relentless, yet immensely captivating and technically adept extreme music can be. Well, apparently some established Swedish musicians did miss them, so they put things right: They brought back the old Swedish Death Metal.

"If you listen to Entombed's "Left Hand Path" today, it still blows everything away. And it's over 20 years old," says Jesper Strömblad, main musical force behind Stockholm/Gothenburg based squad The Resistance, about an album classic that still gives him the shivers after all those years. Hang on a second: Jesper Strömblad? Rings a bell, doesn't it? Indeed, it's the former In Flames guitar player and founding member who quit the band in 2010 after 17 long and exhausting years.

But it is not all about Jesper in The Resistance. The band members' "CV" is as heavy as the sound of their new musical adventure. The four Swedish musicians carry a great legacy in the long Scandinavian extreme metal tradition. Jesper Strömblad, of course, is one of the "columns" of the huge Resistance sound. Together with Jesper, we find another ex member of In Flames - Glenn Ljungström, vocalist Marco Aro (ex-The Haunted, Facedown) and drummer Chris Barkensjö (ex-Kaamos, ex-Grave).

The Resistance will definitely be one of the extreme metal bands in 2013. A first insight into the band's sound was already serviced a few weeks ago when the critically acclaimed teaser- EP "Rise From Treason" was heralding the extreme metal year and blew away fans and media just alike.

The raw energy and brutal sound of "Scars" will be released on CD (as an elaborated digi-pack), on classic vinyl as well as a download. "Scars" is featuring brand new, never before released songs only.

The Resistance is:
Marco Aro - vocals
Jesper Strömblad - guitar
Glenn Ljungström - guitar
Chris Barkensjö - drums
Claudio Oyarzo - bass

Todays tune "Clearing The Slate" is the first official music video by The Resistance, taken from the new album "Scars".

Dark Funeral - Atrum Regina

I close the report from Sweden Rock Festival with the band I travel with, Dark Funeral, Stockholm-based black metal band. An incredibly interesting journey, some new experiences and lots of new friends. There is so much to tell about this and I do not really know where to start, so I keep this as short as possible.

A journey that began early on Thursday, which took us from Stockholm to Sölvesborg and Norje-Boke. Unfortunately, I sucked at taking pictures along the way, as a few funny things happened during the trip, as for example, our GPS broked during the trip, It turned out that the lighter socket that provides GPS with power did not work, so it went off when the battery ran out. The car in front of us had to act and take the lead, it went a bit so-so with that :) We got a little off the rails and got to go on some small roads, we passed by a place called "Bögarehult"(Gays holt)* which kept the mood up a good long time.

*Hult is the Swedish spelling variant of holt and may refer to: Holt, an area of woodland, e.g. a grove or copse, especially as a place-name in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Germany (with variant spellings). Also a common surname derived from place-names in these cultures.

Once we arrived at the festival, it was a relaxed time, walked around and watched some bands, say hello to some friends and ate a good dinner at the Sweden Rocks Restaurant that was placed backstage. As the darkness began to fall, it was soon time for the guys to get up on stage. Thomas Sjöholm had prepared the pyro, Chris Entee have fixed in the perfect sound, but had a tough task to overpower Soundgarden, that was playing simultaneously on the festival scene.

The show was performed exemplary, everyone in the band was really on it and gave it all, Steve (Nachtgarm) sang like a god, in other words, an awesome replacement of Emperor Magus Caligula. Dominator banged on his drums like never before and did a really great gig, got up a couple of drummers who wanted to see him in Action, which was really fun to see, behind the drum monitor stood two moderately famous drummers, with their mouth wide open and a big question mark over the head, wonder how in the hell he can keep up the tempo and still keep it tight as shell.

Lord Ahriman held the banner high in the band, with his technical details he nailed up the coffin for all those who doubted on the new line of Dark Funeral. He made a brilliant effort and shows that he is one of the absolute foremost guitarists in black metal. Even Chaq Mol was alert and showed where the cabinet was buried. With his high thundering riffs that cut through the night like a cheese slicer. New addition on the bass Zornheym, was a real adrenaline rush to the band, running around on stage like a scalded rat is probably exaggerating, but not far from :), his effort was really good and gave an awesome heaviness to the band. This promises really well for future material that slowly builds up in the shadows.

After the gig we traveled to the hotel, where we met up with Exodus and Pentagram. A little chit chat and then sleep. The next day we hanged around a bit on the festival, saw a lot of bands playing that you could read about yesterday, until it started raining then we had it and packed up our van and went to Stockholm through small villages with both horses and cows ... haha.

Here are some pictures from the gig.

Nile - Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld

George Kollias, drum player from the band Nile made a visit to Sweden for a small clinic on slagverket here in Stockholm. I actually took the opportunity to make a visit. I then fell into a crowded store with great expectations of what would happen, when he got up on the drum stool he was greeted by standing invasions. George gave us two songs of the Nile and a self-crafted demo coming on his upcoming solo album eventually. This sympathetic gentleman was very fun to listen to, mixed with drum facts, both the drum patterns and scales, mixed with humor and questions from both fans and drum interested, it was really entertaining to listen to. The store had plenty of drum geeks, as expected, ran into a friend, Ronnie (The drummer from the Grave), who always as nice, just back from a tour with Demonical.

That I'm getting old, noticeable the years, I bring my compact camera and my system camera to document a bit, great opportunities. Is not it every day you're shooting a drummer like this. But senile me, I forget of course my memory cards at home ... damn.

Well enough about that;

Some info about George and Nile :)

George Kollias (born August 30, 1977 in Korinthos, Greece) is a Greek heavy metal drummer best known for his work with American death metal band Nile. He is the first of their four drummers to perform every song on more than one full length album (handling drum duties so far on Annihilation of the Wicked, Ithyphallic and Those Whom the Gods Detest). He started playing drums at the age of 10 on yoghurt cages in diffrent sizes before he had saved enough money to buy his own drumkit. Some years later started drum lessons with Greek drummer Yannis Stavropoulos. In addition to being the drummer of Nile he also teaches drums at the Modern Music School in Athens.

He previously drummed for Sickening Horror, a death metal band. He also used to be in the Greek melodic death metal band Nightfall, but left the band in 2005 to join Nile.
George Kollias made an instructional drumming DVD called "Intense Metal Drumming" that was released in July 2008.

George's hand technique allows him great precision as well, though it is not nearly as individualistic as his foot technique. George grips the stick fully with his index through ring finger, letting them stretch forward and wrap around the stick. He does not use his thumb and index finger to create a swivel. Instead, all of his speed stems from his wrists, much like his ankle usage in the kick.

Nile is an American death metal band from Greenville, South Carolina, formed in 1993. Their music and lyrics are inspired by Ancient Egyptian mysticism, history, religion, and art, as well as stories by H. P. Lovecraft.

Current members in Nile:
Karl Sanders − vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, additional instruments (since 1993)
Dallas Toler-Wade − vocals, guitars (since 1996), bass (studio only) (2007-2010)
George Kollias − drums, percussion (since 2004)
Chris Lollis - bass, vocals (since 2010)

Todays tune "Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld” is taken from the sixth studio album "Those Whom the Gods Detest”. The album was released on November 3, 2009.

The cover artwork, a depiction of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten, was brought to realization this time around by Michal "Xaay" Loranc, whom Karl Sanders had previously worked with on his second solo record Saurian Exorcisms.
