Jess By The Lake - Under The Red Light Shine

Jasmin Saarela, known as the enigmatic leader of the cult band JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES, has released her solo debut. To be released under the moniker JESS BY THE LAKE, the solo album "Under The Red Light Shine" is a more down to earth take on the traditions of rock music than the acid-heavy guitar walls and cosmic dimensions of her main band.

JESS BY THE LAKEs building blocks are more organic, with a focus on nature mysticism and a curiously Finnish brand of melancholy. The music flows unrestrained, with a few tasteful nods to genre forebearers such as DANZIG or DAVID BOWIE hidden here and there.

The first single "Nightmare" was released on April 12th. The straightforward no holds barred -type of song is built around a central theme that’s famous from many a DANZIG song – a hunter tailing helpless female prey – but turns the setting on its head by placing an empowered female protagonist as the hunter.

Saarela describes how the songwriting process has stemmed from a need to create and ponder one’s existence and surroundings.

"Music for me represents constant progress and a means to get by in our existence in this dimension. I’ve written these songs on the guitar or piano. I first started my solo project with Timo from JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES, but eventually gathered a solo band around me from people at my school".

Saarela considers the album a paean to nature and the human mind, also to an indescribable longing, so well known to all romantic artists of the past centuries.

“I named the project based on the fact that I’ve lived by a lake for more or less my entire lake. I’ve grown in the forest and felt a strong, unchanged bond with nature through the years".

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Blues For A Dying Planet" is the latest release by the Swedish Occult Rock band SPIRAL SKIES. It's the follow up to their debut EP "A Queendom to Come", released in 2015. "Blues For A Dying Planet" was Recorded and mixed by Eric Sandberg at Studio Radioskugga, Stockholm 2017. Mastered by Marco at Analogcut Mastering, Berlin 2018.

With a unique blend of psychedelic folk and doom rock of the early 70’s, like a mix between the classic JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and the more modern THE DEVILs BLOOD. SPIRAL SKIES hails from Stockholm and was formed in 2014.

Spirals of tunes from decades ago colours and creates a thousand skies in space and time.

Mysteries and cosmos alike bring a sound like a day so bright, 

yet so hideous as the edge of the night.

An orchestra from the labyrinth of your mind, the sound of light years passing by, 

the sound of the ride of SPIRAL SKIES.

The band consists of amazingly talent vocalist Frida, a voice like that gives goosebumps as soon as she opens her mouth. Along with Jonas and Dan on the guitars, Daniel on drums and Eric on bass.

"Blues For A Dying Planet" opens up with an organ-driven intro with "Black Hole Waltz" until the rocker "Awakening" kicks in, where we get a classic NWOBHM sound, twin guitars, catchy melody. The powerful "Dark Side Of The Cross"has a cool beat with great riffing and an amazing vocal. "The Wizard’s Ball" has a little slower pace in it's powerful meaning, charming and beautiful vocals along with great playing. Psychedelic and classic rock is the main theme in "Danse Macabre". "Labyrinth Of The Mind", is a rocker with some doomish riffing influenced by SABBATH. "Shattered Hopes" is a psychedelic folkish rocker that gives another side of Frida's singing. "Left Is Right And Right Is Left Behind" is another rocker with psychedelic folk elements in both the melody and vocals, heavy riffing with a neatly done solo. The album ends with the really stunning "The Prisoner", hypnotic tune with seducing vocals, progressive riffing and melody that grabs your soul and gives you an eargasm, wonderful!

The album sounds really good, excellent produced, where all the pieces fall on the right places, well-done guys. Already looking forward to the next release, as far as I know, there is a new single in the pipeline. The Artwork for "In Blues For A Dying Planet" is made by the illustrator Vadim Karasyov.

Tempelheks - Witch And Her Man

TEMPELHEKS is an occult doom rock experience from Oslo, Norway. This Oslo four-piece band have inked a deal with Cursed Tongue Records for the release of their third album "Midnight Mirror", got released in August this year.

When you put a spin on TEMPELHEKS you can feel the vibes right out of some classic doom bands such as SAINT VITUS and TROUBLE.

"Midnight Mirror" has been recorded in the renowned Cederberg studio in Kristiansand, Norway. Here they were accompanied by producer, friend, ex-label-head and vocalist of DUNBARROW Espen Andersen. The sessions were done live and fast which gave little room for pickiness, over-thinking or compromise.

Jess and the Ancient Ones - The Horse and Other Weird Tales

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Third time around for JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES (JATAO) on Tune Of The Day as "Record Of The Week", the female fronted finish occult retro rock band with their latest and third release "The Horse and Other Weird Tales", an album that was released last year on Svart Records on December 1st. Busy time when it arrived, all the focus was to sort out all the other releases, so it falled behind a little. Now it has got some air time, been spinning at work, at home, in the car mixed with other new records but I always returned to it and that is a very good sign.

On "The Horse and Other Weird Tales" they continue on the same highway as they painted on "Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes", but with a mystery trip to the psychedelic side of the sixties, with a more modern view point. The album is very groovy and organic and it's produced a very old fashioned album, 9 tunes and 31 minutes, recorded and mixed together with their live sound engineer.

Jess vocals is absolutely stunning, with high brilliance she dives into the mysterious depths, swirls one on her finger so you get absolutely mesmerize and disappear into the myst. The musical partners she have are amazing to capture the timezone and with a intelligence and accessibility with a lot of variety to keep it interest all the way.

From the opening chords to first sentences in the first tune "Death Is The Doors" the path for this record is set. Intro with a 60's horror movie theme and psychedelic keyboards aka THE DOORS slowly walks to the door and unlocks it and the tune swings to a quicker melody pattern by the rhythm section, catchy and amazing sining by Jess.
"Shining" is a groovy piece, keys is still strong here, catchy chorus and very colourful guitars makes it very hard to sit still.
A groovy bass line opens up the rocker "Your Exploding Heads", still with a 60's touch and a hell of a swing.
One of the albums longest tune, just over 7 minutes "You And Eyes", starts with a powerful soft vocals by Jess and it builds up as long the journey goes, psychedelic keys with smokey distorted guitars makes this a epic piece of music.
The albums shortest tune is up next "Radio Aquarius", ticks in under 2 minutes, radio propaganda with nice background music by the band.
"Return To Hallucinate" is a trippy piece with absolutly stunning vocals performance by Jess, with total control and incredible range she masters with fearless every inch of vocal space in the tune.
"(Here Comes) The Rainbow Mouth" with a great bassline, groovy melody, catchy guitars and of course Jess.
"Minotaure", Jess again, puh, I'm totally blown away here, 60's psychedelic rock with racing key riffs and a bass riff that kills, groovy like a beast.
The album ends with the longest paper back novel "Anyway The Minds Flow" have traces of everything on the album.

The tune references J.D. Salinger’s, "The Catcher In the Rye" and includes audio recordings of Mark Chapman, the man who murdered the late Beatles, John Lennon. Mark Chapman has gone on the record stating that "The Catcher in the Rye" inspired him to kill Lennon. Chapman believed Lennon to be a “phony”, with the song “Imagine” having the line about having no possessions while he himself was a wealthy man. This is a complex subject because John Lennon came from a very meager and humble background in a poor part of Liverpool, England, and as a self-made man he understood the fight to better oneself. “Anyway The Minds Flow” discusses the parallels between reality and what is assumed, and the fine line between the truth and misinterpretation.

The summery of this album: A excellent ride into the void of 60's psychedelic occult heavy rock.

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Planetary Space Child" is the latest album released by the American female fronted hard/alternative rock band RUBY THE HATCHET. A band that abound in both the 70s psychedelic infused occult rock as well as in metal and proto-doom genre.

"Planetary Space Child" is an really fun album to listen to, with it's hazy atmosphere, bold personality and a great sense of variety.

The record starts with the title tune, the spacey "Planetary Space Child", great harmonies and powerful voice by Jillian Taylor makes this tune a real piece of art. The next rocker is "Killer", a tune that goes in the more classical format, catchy and full of sludgy riffs. The following tunes follows the same path. "Pagan Ritual" is a more straightforward rocker with psychedelic occult feeling. With a sneaky bass line opens up the beautiful tune "The Fool". "Symphony Of The Night" is an half pace tune at the start before it burst out to kingdom come. "Gemini" is classical rocker with heavy riffing and a more straightforward approach. The last tune of the record "Lightning Comes Again" is a groovy and powerful piece.

Sum: If you want to have a good time, then you play "Planetary Space Child".

Electric Wizard - See You In Hell

The british Occult doom legends ELECTRIC WIZARD is back in business again after some time off, they will release their new album "Wizard Bloody Wizard", on November 10 via Spinefarm.

The record has been described in a press release as:

"forty-three minutes of cranium-crushing bludgeon rock, a relentless aural brain rape and, like the band's beloved vintage horror/exploitation movies, definitely not for those of a nervous disposition."

That BLACK SABBATH is the main source for the band is no doubt about that. The reference is already in the upcoming album title "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or as i saw when I was surfing for info:

"Any metalhead worth his or her salt will immediately recognize as an homage to U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. ☺

"Real heavy music… really basic heavy rock, blues-based but brutal" is exactly what ELECTRIC WIZARD is.

The record is made all in analog recording and has been produced by Oborn and Liz Buckingham (guitar) in their own Satyr IX Recording Studio.

The LP sleeve and art has also been conceived by the band and echoes, again, their love of the macabre, evil and sleazy. A sick and twisted bad taste eye-assault that aims to titillate, excite and repulse you.

"Sex and violence are our basest instincts," Oborn says. "Here Now, There Then" is the debut album from Holland's most notorious rock musicians DOOL. The band, consisting of Micha Haring (THE DEVILS BLOOD, THE HANDS) on drums, Job van de Zande (THE DEVILS BLOOD, MALKOVICH) on bass, Reinier Vermeulen (THE NEW MEDIA, LIAR OF GOLGOTHA) on guitar and Nick Polak (GOLD) on guitar and the striking singer Ryanne van Dorst (ELLE BANDITA).

Salem's Pot - Pronounce This!

Monday, new week, time to scare up the "Monday Thrill", let me present the "Record Of The Week"

The horror-obsessed Swedish doom rockers SALEM'S POT have returned with a brand new album release "Pronounce This!", an album that receive the great trophy "Record Of The Week". SALEM'S POT walks the same path as GHOST, keep the mysterious and never identifies its band members individually, completely anonymous.

"Pronounce This!" is the second release by the mysterious quintet, an album that spawns between the classic 20's movie "Nosferatu" and the twisted "Kiss of the Damned". The music is very hallucinogenic and should be played a dark evening with a few candles and the full moon lightning up the room. You will instantly feel the horror around the corner, the sense of true evil lurking outside the window when the dark hazy tones flows out from the speakers like heavy thick smoke. It's very melodic, doomy and oozy. The Vocals partly reminds of Magnus Pelander (WITCHCRAFT) way of singing, sometimes like Pelle Almqvist (THE HIVES), well more like a mix between them and the music is something like IN SOLITUDE and HAWKWIND with spice of horror. It's a bit weird and wild, amazing in my ears, you can feel that it's bleed classic horror movies in the songwriting. It's boogie blues with free-form psychedelia that touches the classic NWOBHM, catchy melodies that hooks you. Key tracks are the almost 13 minutes long killer tune "Coal Mind", the album opener "Tranny Takes A Trip" a fuzzy and trippy piece and totally odd country track "So Gone, So Dead" and album closer "Desire". "Pronounce This!" is SALEM'S POT breakthrough, nuff said.

Bloody Hammers - Lights Come Alive

The American hard rock duo BLOODY HAMMERS, who hail from the mountains of Transylvania County, NC have released a new album "Lovely Sort of Death" and a few new music videos have been made, like "Bloodletting On the Kiss", "The Reaper Comes" and today's tune "Lights Come Alive". BLOODY HAMMERS consist of Manga, who is the primary producer, singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. BLOODY HAMMERS music straddles a wide range of genres including gothic rock, doom metal and psychedelic rock. The touring band features a revolving lineup with Manga and keyboardist Devallia being the only permanent live members. Devallia also contributes keyboard parts to recordings, is sometimes credited as a co-producer and acts as a songwriting adviser to Manga.
