Paradise Lost - Medusa

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Goth Kings of doom and death are back with a new album "Medusa".

It's their 15th record and it is a solid piece, a real musical work of art, with well crafted tunes with both mystery, magic and wisdom. "Medusa" is the next step from "The Plague Within" and a great flirt with the roots of their musical history.

Guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy does an incredible work with melancholic melodies and inspired riffage, this is together with the rhythm section of Steve Edmondson and the new recruit the creative youngster Waltteri VĂ€yrynen (also of Mackintosh’s VALLENFYRE) who replaces Adrian Erlandsson. Waltteri is an amazing drummer that fits great in the band even if he is just a kid 👩 Nick Holmes vocals is prodigious and his lyrical content is both interesting and touching. Working with producer Jaime GĂłmez Arellano (ULVER, CATHEDRAL) was a good choice, the production is thick and smooth with it's raw sound.

The album opens up gigantic with the mysterious "Fearless Sky" to move over to impressing bleeding death/doom metal tunes like "Gods of Ancient" and "From the Gallows". The albums first single "The Longest Winter" is one of the more gothic tunes on the album, sludgy and heavy along with "Shrines". "Medusa", the title tune is a beautifully crushing piece. The upbeat tempo tune "Blood And Chaos", with its irresistible catchiness got to be the second single from the album. "No Passage for the Dead" is one of the tunes that fall off the normal spectra of the bands typical sound and takes a deep, heavy doomish progressive path. Deep, highly-distorted guitars on "Until The Grave" in a more traditional way and the album ends up dark and heavy with "Symbolic Virtue"

Sum: "Medusa" is another solid release from PARADISE LOST.

Today's tune "Until The Grave" is taken from "Medusa", enjoy!
