Omnium Gatherum - Grey Havens

New week, time to introduce "Record of the Week".

Hailing from Finland, the six piece fierce death metal OMNIUM GATHERUM climbs up on the throne with their latest release "Grey Havens". OMNIUM GATHERUM visit Tune Of The Day for the first time almost two years ago with their last album "Beyond", an album that took me by storm and got the fine distinction "Record Of The Week", now they are here again and I fall down on knees and clap my hands. "Grey Havens" is like a tea bag that dissolves in water, everything just comes out little by little, what a lovely album this is.

Melodic death metal with breathtaking catchy melodies and progressive originality that kicks ass. Although the band mainly follows the path of melodic death metal genre, especially the later albums, has strong influences from progressive death metal sub-genre, approach to death metal recalls the work of Sweden's DARK TRANQUILITY and IN FLAMES, both purveyors of the so-called Gothenburg Sound.

You need this album!

Today's tune "Frontiers" is taken from this week's Record of the Week "Grey Heavens", Century Media Records/Lifeforce Records, 2016.

Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun

Sunday, time for a classic. "Blister in the Sun" is a song by the American alternative rock band VIOLENT FEMMES, originally released on their 1983 self-titled debut album. The song features in the film Grosse Pointe Blank. Since the original master tapes were not available for use in the film the band recorded a new version of the song, entitled "Blister 2000". A new music video was created for the original version of the song, coinciding with the release of the film. It features Gordon Gano as a deranged assassin trying to kill Socks the cat in puppet form, as well as clips from the film. In 2005, chosen by listeners, it became the first English language track to ever be allowed on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, the Republic of Ireland Irish language radio station.

In August 2007, Gordon Gano was the subject of a lawsuit brought by bassist Brian Ritchie. The lawsuit stems partly from Gano's authorization of the use of "Blister" in a Wendy's commercial. In 2008, the song was featured on a Foster's Lager "Stealing Shadows" advertisement.

THE VIOLENT FEMMES were founded by Brian Ritchie (bassist), and Victor DeLorenzo (percussionist) as a rhythm section, and became a full-fledged band upon the arrival of Gordon Gano (singer/guitarist). In its early days, the band frequently played coffee houses and street corners. They were discovered (and subsequently forgotten) by James Honeyman-Scott (of THE PRETENDERS) August 23, 1981 when the band was busking on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre, the Milwaukee venue that THE PRETENDERS would be playing later that night. Chrissie Hynde invited them to play a brief acoustic set after the opening act. The band signed to Slash Records and released a self-titled album that they had recorded in July 1982. The music was an innovative combination of American folk music and indie rock, and commonly referred to as "folk-punk".

Enjoy today's tune and have a cozy sunday!

Skunk Anansie - Death to the Lovers

The British rock band SKUNK ANANSIE whose members include Skin (lead vocals), Cass (guitar, bass, backing vocals), Ace (guitar, backing vocals) and Mark Richardson (drums and percussion) have released their sixth studio album Anarchytecture that includes today's tune and the bands latest single "Death to the Lovers". The album was released in 15 January 2016 through earMUSIC and Carosello Records. With the 20 years of music they still makes good tunes, the melody-driven rock still works at most parties. The lyrics are really honest made by Skin and she still can sing the socks of most of the female singers around this globe.

Skin has described SKUNK ANANSIE as a "clit-rock" group, which Allmusic clarifies as "an amalgam of heavy metal and blackfeminist rage". Members Skin and Ace have mentioned the SEX PISTOLS, BLONDIE, Dub, Reggae, Electronica, Hip-Hop and World music as significant influences.

Today's tune "Death to the lovers" is taken from the latest album Anarchytecture

Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Traveller is the highly anticipated Mercury Records Nashville solo debut album from rising superstar Chris Stapleton. This Kentucky native first got his start a decade ago as the lead singer of the bluegrass band, THE STEELDRIVERS. Stapleton is born 1978 and is an American country and bluegrass musician that is already a world-renowned songwriter, Stapleton has enjoyed six number-one songs including the five-week number-one "Never Wanted Nothing More" recorded by Kenny Chesney, "Love's Gonna Make It Alright" recorded by George Strait, and "Come Back Song" recorded by Darius Rucker. As a songwriter, over 150 of Stapleton's songs have appeared on albums by such artists as Adele, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. He has co-written with notable artists like Vince Gill, Peter Frampton and Sheryl Crow.

In 2015, Stapleton released his debut album Traveller. It reached number one on the Billboard 200. Stapleton won the 2015 Country Music Association Award for Best Male Vocalist, New Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for Traveller. He received four Grammy Award nominations for the 2016 ceremony, including Album of the Year.

Recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio A (with additional production at The Castle and Blackbird Studio), Traveller was produced by Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) and recorded by Vance Powell (Jack White). In addition to renditions of Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove's "Tennessee Whiskey" and Don Sampson's "Was It 26," the album features twelve original songs, including fan-favorite "Sometimes I Cry."

The album is an old-school country record mixed with Southern rock. Tracks on the album features electric guitar, mandolin, and acoustic guitar. "The Devil Named Music" exclaims the hard life on the road, "Might As Well Get Stoned" features resignation lyrics, and "Sometimes I Cry" is a blues song. "Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore" shrouds reflections about his father in the language of religious backsliding.

This is a damn good record that works for any Southern rock, Country music lovers.

Stapleton wrote or co-wrote all but two of the album's 14 tracks. The album features a blues-influenced cover of George Jones' single "Tennessee Whiskey", and Charlie Daniels' "Was It 26," written by Don Sampson.

Today's tune "Tennessee Whiskey" is the title of a country song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. It was originally recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name. The song was covered by American country music artist George Jones, whose version was released in August 1983 as the third single from his album Shine On. Coe joined Jones onstage to sing a chorus on the song at the inaugural Farm Aid in 1985. It remained a mainstay in Jones' live set, with the singer often substituting the name of whatever city or town he was in for "Tennessee" in the second chorus.

The clip is from when Stapleton joins “CBS This Morning: Saturday” to perform “Tennessee Whiskey” on Saturday Sessions.

Agnes Strange - Graveyard

Sunday, time for a classic.

AGNES STRANGE was an heavy trio from Southampton, England, led by singer-guitarist John Westwood, somehow didn't make a splash on the early '70s boogie circuit despite their obvious similarities to beloved acts like the GROUNDHOGS, BUDGIE and the almighty STATUS QUO. Despite some heavy names in their corner, including management company DJM (led by Dick James, who had made a mint off the Beatles' publishing) and A&R folks at Pye Records, some bad luck and inexplicable business decisions led them off course. Foremost among these was a fundamental misunderstanding of the term "pub rock," which led Pye to release Strange Flavour on a one-off label called Birdsnest, which was affiliated with a chain of theme pubs of the same name, owned by the beer manufacturer Watney's. The existing heavy rock audience at the time reacted much as straight-edge punks would if McDonald's and Sony BMG joined forced to release a hardcore album available only at fast food restaurants, and Strange Flavour disappeared without trace, as did AGNES STRANGE.

The band consist of:

John Westwood (lead guitar, vocals),
Alan Green (bass, vocals),
Dave Rodwell (drums, vocals)

Today's tune "Graveyard" Is Taken From The Kick Ass Compilation - Theme For A Dream (1971-1974)

Villagers - Memoir

Where Have You Been All My Life?, released on 8th January 2016, is a collection of songs that distils five years and three albums of the Irish folk act VILLAGERS songwriting into one flowing narrative.

Recorded in one day at London’s RAK Studio with Richard Woodcraft (RADIOHEAD, THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS) and VILLAGERS live engineer Ber Quinn, the album is a re-imagining of older material seamlessly woven with present glories from VILLAGERS most recent studio album, "Darling Arithmetic".

Released in April 2015, Conor O’Brien’s third album under the guise of VILLAGERS was a more pared-back, intimate journey compared to the multi-faceted arrangements of Becoming A Jackal (2010) and {Awayland} (2013). This fresh approach was extended on subsequent VILLAGERS tours, where old songs were reinvented to match the new. Then for one day in July 2015, 18 songs were quickly captured and 12 songs chosen for the final album, making it VILLAGERS most intense, but satisfying, session to date. These recordings are all first or second takes, and the immediacy of the occasion was part of the magic that day, live and unadorned by overdubs or studio trickery.

The unique nature of these arrangements is due in no small part to the musicians in the room at the time of recording: Cormac Curran on grand piano and analogue synthesizer, Danny Snow on double bass, Mali Llywelyn on harp, mellotron and vocals, and Gwion Llewelyn on drums, flugelhorn and vocals. The result is a lush, harmony-laden and vibrant document of a time and a place.

Today's tune is a new recording of "Memoir" that is also included in the album, which O’Brien wrote for Charlotte Gainsbourg, it can be found on her 2011 album Stage Whisper, but has never before been recorded by VILLAGERS until now.

The Video clip is an acoustic version of the tune.

Here is the audio version of the tune.

Upcoming tour dates.

Daughter - Doing The Right Thing

DAUGHTER is an indie folk band from England. Fronted by North London native Elena Tonra, they were formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France. They have released four EPs, three singles and two albums, and are currently signed to Glassnote (North America) and 4AD (Europe). After playing the local London circuit, they toured supporting Ben Howard around Europe and have since played headlining tours around North America, Europe and Australia.

With their anxiety running true the songs makes it very emotional to listen to, almost heart breaking. But somehow it hooks you, put you in trance, time is standing still and your feelings is floating.

Today's tune "Doing The Right Thing" is taken from the second album "Not to Disappear", released on 15 January 2016. In anticipation of the album, a music video for the promotional single "Doing the Right Thing" was released on 30 September 2015. Dream Theater - The Gift Of Music

The Astonishing is the thirteenth studio album and second concept album by one of the world's leading progressive metal band DREAM THEATER, released as a double album on January 29, 2016 through Roadrunner Records. The album's story was conceived by guitarist John Petrucci in mid-2013, and its music was written throughout 2015 by Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Composer David Campbell was hired to assist with orchestrating the album's string lines and choirs. Recording was completed at Cove City Sound Studios in Long Island, New York, with the exception of vocals, which were recorded in Canada. Mixing and sound engineering were performed by the band's longtime collaborator, Richard Chycki, with Petrucci producing.

"The Astonishing" is set in a dystopian United States and follows the Ravenskill Militia, a band of rebels, in their efforts to defy the Great Northern Empire of the Americas using the magical power of music. It was inspired by contemporary fantasy and science fiction franchises such as Game of Thrones and Star Wars, as well Petrucci's observations on the ubiquity of technological automation in modern day society. In their effort to match the album's narrative, DREAM THEATER wrote songs in a wide variety of styles ranging from mellow ballads to their more conventional progressive metal sound.

Leading up to the The Astonishing's release, the band marketed the album with its own website, fan mailing lists, and trailers. Two singles, "The Gift of Music" (Today's tune) and "Moment of Betrayal", have been released in support of the album. A tour has been planned for early 2016 with dates in Europe and North America already scheduled.

"The Astonishing" is a big piece, an extreme playing time of almost 127 minutes is not easy to digest. The melodies are there and a high charged of emotions and megalomania. An extreme inspiration of joy have been flowed in their brains in creation of this album.  It's huge, almost too much to take in at first, but if you give it some time so perhaps it grow up and blossom.

Today's tune "The Gift Of Music" is taken from their new album "The Astonishing".

JD McPherson - Head Over Heels

JD McPherson is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He is known for a retro sound rooted in the rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and rockabilly music of the 1950s. Among influences such as Little Richard and Fats Domino, McPherson also draws inspiration from artists as diverse as the WU-TANG CLAN, PIXIES and LED ZEPPELIN.

McPherson grew up in rural southeastern Oklahoma, near the town of Talihina. He took up the guitar at age 13. In high school he played in a number of local punk rock bands and began writing his own songs. During this time, McPherson also developed a strong interest in 1950s rock and roll after being exposed to the music of Buddy Holly. This went on to shape his song writing and sound for bands he was in such as THE POISON OKIES and THE STARKWEATHER BOYS. He studied visual arts in college, earning a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Tulsa, and later worked as an art and technology teacher. After deciding to pursue music more seriously, McPherson sent a demo to Jimmy Sutton of Hi-Style Records, a label specializing in roots music. Sutton agreed to produce McPherson's debut album.

His debut album Signs and Signifiers was released in 2010 on Hi-Style Records. The album was given a major-label release by Rounder Records on April 17, 2012, debuting at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and number 161 on the Billboard 200 the week of June 2, 2012. It also reached number 47 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart.

McPherson's second album, Let the Good Times Roll, was released on February 10, 2015. The band played the acoustic stage at the Glastonbury Festival 2015 on Friday June 26, before continuing their European tour in the Netherlands.

Today's tune "Head Over Heels" is taken from his second album "Let the Good Times Roll" .

The Kentucky rockers BLACK STONE CHERRY have released a new single/video from the upcoming fifth album "Kentucky".

The band consists of Chris Robertson (lead vocals, lead guitar), Ben Wells (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Jon Lawhon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and John Fred Young (drums, backing vocals). BLACK STONE CHERRY have released four studio albums: Black Stone Cherry (2006), Folklore and Superstition (2008), Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (2011) and Magic Mountain (2014), as well as three EPs. Mutoid Man - Bleeder

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Bleeder" is the debut album with singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky (CAVE IN), drummer Ben Koller (CONVERGE, ALL PIGS MUST DIE) and Nick Cageao on bass.

"Bleeder" is a riff monster of rank, a red-hot, nasty hard-rock party with unstoppable energy and power. With an stellar musicianship and a chemistry like this guys have is just stunning. The woolsock rocking melodies from CAVE IN and acrobatics from CONVERGE together with a sound guy from Brooklyn metal bar Saint Vitus can make a furious knotty album like this is amazing, this is a real killer.

MUTOID MAN knocks me off totally, If I heard this album earlier it would have been on top 10 of the 2015's album summary. This guys soars something between classic hardrock and MASTEDON to THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN with ZAPPA influences. Crazy, oh yes but damn so good! It's a short record of 10 songs that clocks in at 29 minutes only, but it's an energetic and fun time that you want to repeat more than one time.

Take today's tune "Bridgeburner" that is a real catchy killer that will get you to sing along even as they 1000's of tempo shifts.

Summary: Yes, You need this!

Today's tune "Bridgeburner" shot while recording in Salem, MA at GodCity Studios with Kurt Ballou. The studio version of this song is taken from the album "Bleeder", released June 30, 2015.

May Blitz - Smoking The Day Away

Sunday, time for a classic.

MAY BLITZ is a British heavy rock power trio that was active in the early 1970s.

The group was formed in 1969 by bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker, the rhythm section of the blues-rock trio BAKERLOO, both of whom left the group when guitarist Clem Clempson departed to join Colosseum. Jamie Black joined the group on vocals and guitars but both Poole and Baker left this group as well before it recorded anything, Poole joining Vinegar Joe and Baker URIAH HEEP. Black then added fellow Canadian Reid Hudson on bass and Tony Newman, who had played with Jeff Beck, THE HOLLIES and SOUNDS INCORPORATED, on drums.

After some time playing pubs in the UK, the group signed with Vertigo Records (in the US they were on Paramount Records) and released their debut album in 1970. A second album followed early in 1971 but the group did not see success quickly and decided to disband in late 1971. Black and Hudson, both originally from Canada, returned to their native country while Newman went on to join THREE MAN ARMY.

Today's tune "Smoking The Day Away" is taken from the self-titled debut album by British/Canadian power trio MAY BLITZ. It was released in 1970.

Scott Kelly - We Let The Hell Come

Slowcore stripped down Country is what Scott Kelly have to offer on today's tune "We Let The Hell Come" taken from the Record "The Forgiven Ghost in Me", released 2012.

Scott Michael Kelly is one of three founding members of Oakland, California experimental metal band NEUROSIS, in which he is a vocalist and guitarist. He has been writing and publishing music since 1985 with NEUROSIS, TRIBES OF NEUROT, BLOOD AND TIME and his solo acoustic project. He is also involved in a project named SHRINEBUILDER involving Al Cisneros, Scott Weinrich, and Dale Crover. The first album from SHRINEBUILDER was released in October 2009. He has also guested on five studio albums by the band MASTODON. In addition to his musical projects, Scott, along with his bandmates in NEUROSIS, is co-owner of Neurot Recordings.

On his solo projects it is largely acoustic guitar music which is much different stylistically from the output of his primary band.

The Chemistry Set - A Cure For The Inflicted Afflicted

"The Psychedelic scientists exquisite English Toytown Acid-Pop songs achieve rare combinations of muscle and melody"

That's something that "The Sunday Times" recently said about THE CHEMISTRY SET.

THE CHEMISTRY SET are a cult London psychedelic band. Composed of veterans of the late 1980s neo-psychedelic boom, the group received regular airplay on John Peel’s show, were covered in the mainstream and underground music press and appeared on Tony Wilson’s BBC2 television show, 100%.

Their first official release was in 1988, an eponymous cassette of bedroom demos, released on the Acid Tapes label. This was followed by several flexi discs between 1988 and 1990, in which the band received an international fan base. THE CHEMISTRY SET were being featured in fanzines in the UK, Spain, Italy, Holland, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Japan, USA and Australia and New Zealand. Tracks also appeared on compilation LP's in the UK, Spain & Germany.

The band made tours throughout the UK, Europe and the United States. Highlights include playing the CMJ Festival in New York, Brixton Academy with HAWKWIND and touring with Robyn Hitchcock, plus regular gigs at London venues like the Rough Trade record shop, The Marquee and The Borderline.

Today's tune "A Cure For The Inflicted Afflicted" is taken from the Elapsed Memories EP, 2014. The EP is accompanied by an amazingly surreal artwork and poster by the Barcelona designer Serse Rodriguez.

Rammstein - Ich Tu Dir Weh

"Ich tu dir weh" ("I hurt you" or "I do you woe") is the second single from the 2009 album Liebe ist für alle da by German band RAMMSTEIN. Due to the sado-masochistic content of this song, the album was placed on the "index" maintained by the German Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien. In May 2010, the original uncensored album and the single were de-indexed and consequently released in Germany.

When played live, large amounts of pyrotechnics are used during "Ich tu dir weh". A choreographed fight takes place mid-song between Lindemann and Flake, which ends with Flake being forced into a large bathtub. Lindemann proceeds to stand on a platform that raises him high above the bathtub, from which he pours a large amount of sparks from a milk can into the bath below. This causes multiple large explosions, after which Flake emerges wearing a silver holographic suit. In the first few German concerts of the Liebe ist für alle da tour, they modified song's lyrics to allow Lindemann to sing them, because the original lyrics were tagged as inappropriate by the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien.

The music video for the song was released online on 21 December 2009, hosted on the adult site visit-X.

The video shows the band performing the song with equipment that has black and gray colors. Both Till Lindemann and Oliver Riedel are wearing eye contacts that eventually turn colors (Riedel's turn green and Lindemann's turn red). Lindemann's mouth also emits a white light when he sings. A cable runs through his cheek, and a light is mounted inside of his mouth. Lindemann wanted the effect to be authentic, so he had his cheek pierced just for the production. At the climax of the video, the stage around Flake fills with electricity, resulting in the band members exploding at the last note.
