Emma Ruth Rundle - Darkhorse

On September 14th, 2018 was "On Dark Horses" released, the fourth solo studio album by Emma Ruth Rundle, the prolific singer/songwriter, you may recognize from THE NOCTURNES, RED SPAROWES, MARRIAGES, and now latest the collaborative affair with THOU.

Emma Ruth Rundle explores her gothic fantasies through well balanced and electrified creations where the darkess corners are reviled. The tunes are very powerful and beautiful, just like free horses can be.

She said about the tune:

“‘Darkhorse’ was one of the first songs that sprung forth in writing the album and became a focal point, as well as an emotional reference, for the rest of the record, hence the album title. It is written from the perspective of one sibling singing to another. The lyrics describe not just the younger sister, but both sisters struggling to overcome their shared traumatic past, with the chorus exclaiming a sense of pride in having the chance and ability to override the unlucky odds.”

Today's tune with Emma Ruth Rundle where she is performing "Darkhorse" live at Avast! Recording Co.. Recorded December 14, 2018. Enjoy!

En Minor - Mausoleums

The Southern Gothic neo-folk project EN MINOR has been culminating since Philip H Anselmo was a child in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The bases of some songs that have now become the EN MINOR project were written at significant stages in Philip’s life, starting at 9 years old when given his first guitar and no patience to learn other people’s music, started writing his own. Other material from Anselmo’s band of underground lore, Body & Blood, has evolved into EN MINOR songs. Although Philip is most well-known for Extreme Metal and Rock, here we get to hear a softer side of his vocal chords, but lyrically is heavy as anything.

Featuring former members of SUPERJOINT RITUAL, Still, Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, WOVENHAND), Kevin Bond (CHRIST INVERSION) and Jimmy Bower (EYEHATEGOD, DOWN). They’re joined by THE DOVER BROTHERS and Steve Bernal, who contributes his notable talent as former first cellist of the TEMPLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

EN MINOR is a blatant change of pace and embrace all of the melancholy quirks without compromise.

EN MINOR is haveing a streaming event on November 25th: Live at the Orpheum Theater. Get your tickets and exclusive merch at: enminor.nocapshows.com

This is not “party” music. This is “kill the party” music.

Today's tune "Mausoleums" is taken from the brand new album "When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome", released September 4, 2020 by Housecore Records in US and Season Of Mist in Europe. Enjoy!

Draconian - Under A Godless Veil

Monday, new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Under A Godless Veil" is the seventh album by the Swedish gothic doom metal DRACONIAN. Since forming in 1994 in Säffle, Sweden, they have established themselves as one of the foremost bands. The five years has past since the last album "Sovran" was released, and it was the first with the new vocalist Heike Langhans. The band is still intact since the previous one and "Under A Godless Veil" follows the same path of its predecessor, but expands their route to prefect the formula they've been working on for such a long time.

"Under A Godless Veil" is a gorgeous creation of dark and slow gothic doom metal, mournful full of melancholy riffing, imposing sorrowful growls by Anders and tender, human hearted clean vocals by Heike. The album will spellbind you completely after the first minute on the opening "Sorrow Of Sophia" and sets the mood and speed how the album will take it's path during the up coming 62 minutes. With it's haunting power and the visceral magic of melody in "The Sacrificial Flame" is just marvelous, or the killer of the single "Sleepwalkers". The doomy "Moon Over Sabaoth" is a really epic piece followed by the atmospheric interlude of "Buried Fields". "The Sethian" is another very powerful and sentimental tune that softens the tear ducts. That heartfelt manner continues in the softish "Claw Marks On The Throne" that gives varying degrees of drama and serenity. "Night Visitor" is touching ballad that breaks well out from the heaviness. Everything ends in a very elegance way of the nine minutes "Ascend Into Darkness" that wraps "Under A Godless Veil" is the best possible way. This is an album that I highly recomend you to get.

Sum: "Under A Godless Veil" is a real goth/doom beauty.

Heike Langhans - Vocals
Anders Jacobsson - Vocals
Johan Ericson - Guitars, Vocals
Daniel Arvidsson - Guitars
Jerry Torstensson - Drums
Fredrik Johansson - Bass

Lacuna Coil - Losing My Religion

Thursday, time for a cover.

Today it's time for "Losing My Religion", a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. The song was released as the first single from the group's 1991 album "Out Of Time". Built on a mandolin riff, "Losing My Religion" was an unlikely hit for the group, garnering extensive airplay on radio as well as on MTV and VH1 due to its critically acclaimed music video. The song became R.E.M.'s highest-charting hit in the United States, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and expanding the group's popularity beyond its original fanbase. "Out Of Time" garnered R.E.M. seven nominations at the 1992 Grammy Awards, the most nominations of any artist that year. The band won three awards: one for Best Alternative Music Album and two for "Losing My Religion", Best Short Form Music Video and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck wrote the main riff and chorus to the song on a mandolin while watching television one day. Buck had just bought the instrument and was attempting to learn how to play it, recording the music as he practiced. Buck said that "when I listened back to it the next day, there was a bunch of stuff that was really just me learning how to play mandolin, and then there's what became 'Losing My Religion', and then a whole bunch more of me learning to play the mandolin."

Recording of the song started in September 1990 at Bearsville Studio A in Woodstock, New York. The song was arranged in the studio with mandolin, electric bass, and drums. Bassist Mike Mills came up with a bassline inspired by the work of FLEETWOOD MAC bassist John McVie; by his own admission he could not come up with one for the song that was not derivative. Buck said the arrangement of the song "had a hollow feel to it. There's absolutely no midrange on it, just low end and high end, because Mike usually stayed pretty low on the bass." The band decided to have touring guitarist Peter Holsapple play acoustic guitar on the recording. Buck reflected, "It was really cool: Peter and I would be in our little booth, sweating away, and Bill and Mike would be out there in the other room going at it. It just had a really magical feel." Singer Michael Stipe's vocal was recorded in a single take. Orchestral strings, arranged by Mark Bingham, were added to the song by members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Soundscape Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1990.

Stipe has repeatedly stated that the song's lyrics are not about religion. The phrase "Losing My Religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate."Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression. He told Q that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you." Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by THE POLICE, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'"

Today's cover is made by LACUNA COIL, the Italian gothic metal band from Milan. The cover was released on the sixth studio album "Dark Adrenaline", Released on January 23, 2012. The cover was a "riskier" take that turned out pretty well. Enjoy today's cover of a brilliant tune.

The Cult - Hidden City

New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Hidden City" is the tenth studio album by the The British gothic rockers THE CULT. "Hidden City" was released on February 5, 2016. It will be the final part of a trilogy that began with "Born into This" (2007) and the second was "Choice of Weapon" (2012) and the band's first album with bassist Grant Fitzpatrick, making it THE CULTs first album since their 1994 self-titled album not to feature Chris Wyse. It also marks the fifth time Bob Rock had produced a CULT album.

"Hidden City" is like the Atlantis island, an forgotten gem, lost in the ocean. The album has an incredible joy that should be virtually blown away by now, over three decades have passed and "Hidden City" climbs up to one of top 3 CULT albums in my opinion. This album have a great confident and artistically musicality that blows me away! Is this the same band that I loved in my youth?

First tune on the record "Dark Energy", an excellent choice for the first track. Drummer John Tempesta's tom toms starts with a tripping tribal drum beat until Duffy's guitars sneaks up in the right speaker before it gets in stereo, his post-gothic-electric riffs is recognized in seconds and hit's you like a stone brick, before Astbury enters the stage with his charismatic vocals. The album sparkles and turns both here and there, tunes like "No Love Lost", "Dance The Night", "Hinderland", "Deeply Ordered Chaos" goes more in the typical classic CULT manner while tunes like "G O A T" is pretty busy, dirty and far out and the slow and beauty "In Blood" and "Birds of Paradise". "Avalanche of Light" have a nice vocal melody part as well as "Lilies". The driving beat of "Heathens" and the ballad "Sound and Fury" ends the record, where the last tune allows Astbury to be standing a few meters in front of the band and sing with his hole soul.

Summery: "Hidden City" is done with a great confident along with excellent musicians, it's a great piece of work!

Today's tune is with THE CULT that performs "Dark Energy" at Pacific Beat Recordings in San Diego, California at a 91X X-session.

My Dying Bride - Feel the Misery

MY DYING BRIDE have released a new track from the upcoming 12th album "Feel the Misery"

The 2015 studio album from the UK's Metal masters. An epic journey of all-conquering Doom Metal steeped in woe and despair.

Pre-order the album:
Special Edition: (presented in a deluxe earbook format with a 40 page booklet, and includes a bonus disc featuring alternate mixes of album tracks, plus Feel the Misery on 10" vinyl) TIME-LIMITED EARLYBIRD PRICE OF £37.99

CD: 2LP: T-SHIRT: Digital:

Using 'The Raft of Medusa' by French romantic painter Théodore Géricault as visual inspiration as well as taking cues from the bands own bleak and foreboding music, MY DYING BRIDEs latest video is a harrowing tale of tragedy and loss.

Filmed on the stunning Pembroke coast of South Wales and in particular, St. Govans Chapel, the scenes were set to play out the narrative as vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe takes the role of a lone musician and poet who stumbles upon a fallen maiden while combing the seascape for curiosities. Clearly the victim of a recent shipwreck, she is gathered up and removed to a suitable, sombre resting place, all the while the mournful "Feel The Misery" plays alongside, marrying the rich visuals with the melancholic song.

Directed by James Sharrock & Ryan Mackfall, James explains “The concept for "Feel the Misery" has been in my head for a while. It is loosely based on the famous painting "Raft of Medusa" by Theodore Gericault painted in 1819, and when I heard the song it invoked the creative idea I had been thinking about.”

Bringing the video concept into context James continues “In May this year I read in the news reports of a "Ghost ship" carrying 350 starving Rohingya Muslims vanishing off Thailand. Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand refused to engage in search-and-rescue operations, instead pushing the boats back to sea, letting the people starve and refusing to accept the asylum seekers – similar to the story behind ‘Raft of Medusa’ . It was only later in the year as we were filming the music video down around the Pembrokeshire coast that the media took a greater interest in the deaths of asylum seekers in the Med. The song has allowed me to bring to life not only issues that are currently facing us all, but a masterpiece that reflects a similar tragedy from centuries ago.”

Today's tune "Feel the Misery" is the title track taken from MY DYING BRIDEs latest opus and 12th full studio album "Feel the Misery", is set for release on 18th September on Peaceville Records

Year Of The Goat - Vermin

Monday, time to introduce this weeks "Record Of The Week", this week we stay on Swedish soil and bow for YEAR OF THE GOAT and their latest album "The Unspeakable". It's about a month ago when we had the first tune of "The Unspeakable" played here at Tune Of The Day, that was the song "The Emma", then we stretched out our arms and praised the other side for a brilliant drop!

In these times of global upheaval YEAR OF THE GOAT will add fire to chaos and ignite the branches spread out for Christ by his flock to further the triumphal return of a Lord that never left… So rejoice in sin, every hour and every second is yours and yours only, just like every year is, and always has been, the YEAR OF THE GOAT!

"The Unspeakable" is a finely crafted piece, which is chock full of conjuring tone and with sinister knells, a magic mix of species, like a tin of "Chimichurri". "The Unspeakable" kicks of very brave, a epic 13 minute killer with sprawling twists full of progressive and dark gothic influences! The Second tune "Pillars of The South" they serve us with a straight rocker with great riffing and the vocal harmonies are just stunning. The 3:rd track we have played before, the amazing ballad where we get more of the astonishing use of the vocals and organ! That YEAR OF THE GOAT knows how to create amazing tunes is shown on this record only after the three first tunes. "Vermin" with it's more folk rockish approach gives the album a great highlight, it's catchy and melodic! The tunes "The Wind", "Black Sunlight" both rock on with all the ingredients you know to love so far and this keeps going thru until the end when the album closer "Riders With Vultures" get's on, a bombastic tune, where YOTG gives us a majesty of progressive rock in the same spirit as the first epic tune.

A quick summary of "The Unspeakable".

It's captivating, majestic and surprisingly fresh "Chimichurri"!
You need to add to your collection!

This one of the limited edition Vinyl releases of "The Unspeakable", yes I got this version!

Today's tune "Vermin" is taken from "The Unspeakable"

Sorry! No Video on this track, so please check out Spotify below for the link! Give it a listen and you will love it!

Rome – Hate Us And See If We Mind

Monday and a new week, which means it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week".

First, I must inform that I am without "turntable" right now. Actually it is not so bad at all, it's on service and upgrade, gone more than a week or two. This means that I listen more to the digital format than I normally do, but on the other hand it gives the opportunity to listen on things that are not normally "to be found" on the proper format. This week's "Record Of The Week" is one of those, no Vinyl is made as far as I know.

"A Passage To Rhodesia" is the latest release (10th album) from the Luxembourg based neo-folk singer songwriter Jerome Reuters "ROME". He is know for his storytelling about history and 20th Century conflicts. Like the album "Flowers from Exile" was about the Spanish Civil War and "Nos Chants Perdus" is about the French Resistance. The latest album "A Passage To Rhodesia" is about the Rhodesian Bush War.

The album is soft, beautiful and warm where the story grows from tune to tune. Jerome Reuters voice is deep, sensitive baritone like and in a perfect shape to tell a tragic and sad story about the cruel war on the other side of the planet. His way of singing and voice reminds me of NICK CAVE. ROMEs musical and lyrical world is genuinely unique, blending traditional songwriting craftsmanship, unusual arrangements and fine poetry into one monstrous and intimate musical output that combines chanson, dark ambient, apocalyptic folk, pop, acoustic rock, martial industrial, cold wave, all rolled into one impressive avant-garde package.

Reuter’s songs are firmly in the tradition of chansonier heroes like JACQUES BREL and LÉO FERRÉ, but in a strange mélange with the darker brands of (post-)industrial music culture. ROMEs lyrics are inspired by world literature from Camus to Genet and Jerome’s frequent use of collage and sampling techniques serves to create a new kind of intertextuality between word and sound. The lyrical beauty of Reuter's compositions, the depths of his poetry and the complex experimental arrangements make ROME an unusually challenging musical experience

"A Passage To Rhodasia" is a great release and I could really recommend this album even if you can't get it on Vinyl, I hope he will release it.

There is a limited box version where a 10" vinyl is included, but it only have two tracks.

Todays tune "Hate Us And See If We Mind" is taken from the album "A Passage To Rhodasia", released August 10, 2014

Deathstars - Metal

Deathstars is a Swedish band from Stockholm that perform industrial and gothic metal. Formed in 2000, the group are noted for their dark horror-themed lyrics, pessimistic and misanthropic social commentary, distinctive trademark face paint, dark stage uniforms and physical appearances that correspond to gothic fashion. They have released three full-length studio albums; Synthetic Generation (2002 in Europe and 2003 in North and South America), Termination Bliss (2006) and Night Electric Night (2009). Deathstars have supported live acts by bands such as Korn and Cradle of Filth, the latter band which was in part inspiration for Deathstars. Deathstars is supporting Rammstein on their Made In Germany 1995-2011 tour. And last week they did play at a sold out "The Globe" here in Stockholm.

The guys in the band seemed to be in really good mood, good to play at home, I think, and it was evident once they got up on stage, good gig.

The current lineup of the band consists primarily of members from Swordmaster, a black metal project that has former members of Dissection, and Ophthalamia. The band currently consists of Whiplasher Bernadotte (lead vocals), Nightmare Industries (guitar and keyboards), Skinny Disco (bass guitar, backing vocals), Vice (drums) and Cat Casino (guitar).

Here are some pictures from the gig, this time it's from Micke Sandström's lens!

Within Temptation (feat. Keith Caputo) - What Have You Done

In October 2011 this band will come to my home town Stockholm so I thought Ill do a video with em. As I do like this kinda music im sorta thrilled about it :D

They are going out on a massive tour around Europe. ( check the dates in the end)

Here is a message from them:
As you know, we have been very busy working on our new album in the past year. It isn’t finished yet, but we’re getting there! We currently have the album scheduled for the beginning of 2011 and of course we will be touring soon after the album release! We’re returning to the European stages in February and March for the first part of the tour and head straight into the festival season after that.

The band's current members are:

Sharon den Adel on Lead vocals
Robert Westerholt on Rhythm guitar
Jeroen van Veen on Bass
Ruud Adrianus Jolie on Lead guitar
Martijn Spierenburh on Keyboards

How did they form?

The married couples Robert Westerholt (on guitar) and Sharon den Adel (Vocals) began the band in 1996, after Robert left his previous band, The Circle. The Circle re-named themselves Voyage and released an album called Embrace, including a song featuring Sharon den Adel. Soon after that release the band broke up.[12]

Robert then joined with Sharon in forming Within Temptation, including former The Circle band members Jeroen van Veen on bass guitar and Michiel Papenhove on guitar, as well as Martijn Westerholt on the keyboard and Dennis Leeflang on drums (later replaced by Ivar de Graaf)

They released 4 albums and the 5th Unforgiven is due to come in March 2011.
