Steve Von Till - Indifferent Eyes

Over the course of recent time, an aching, growing void has developed where our normal way of life has resided. Uncertainty abounds, and Steve Von Till's "No Wilderness Deep Enough" provides a voice of existential wisdom and experience to offer comfort and perspective in an era of uncharted territory. These six pieces of music shape a hallucinatory landscape of sound that plumbs the depths of the natural world's mysteries and uncertainties—questions that have vexed humanity since the dawn of time asked anew amidst a backdrop that's as haunting as it is holistic.

Von Till’s fifth solo album is a swirling and iridescent blend of ambient, neo-classical, and gothic Americana that swan-dives into the darkness of modern life, with the resulting emergence a sonic document of rural psychedelia that transcends the physical world—towards a greater spiritual acceptance that connects naturalism, spiritualism, and the corporeal form.

Von Till has charted an extraordinary musical path over the last several decades, from his main duties as singer and guitarist of the boundary-breaking NEUROSIS to the psychedelic music of his HARVESTMAN project and the unique folks songs he's released under his own name.

But "No Wilderness Deep Enough" is truly like nothing you've ever heard from him before—an album that's devastatingly beautiful and overwhelming in its scope, reminiscent of the tragic ecstasy of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' recent work as well as the borderless ambient music pioneered by Brian Eno, late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson's glacial compositions, and the electronic mutations of Coil.

With a foundation of simple melancholy piano chord progressions embellished with mellotron, cello, french horn and electronic treatments Von Till's scorched ache spreads across the terrain of No Wilderness Deep Enough like a brushfire, adding a tactile level to his sonic creation as well as an inviting level of friction to the burning beauty painted across the album's framework.

"No Wilderness Deep Enough" was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn at Flora Recording and Playback. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. The album was released August 7, 2020.

Today's tune "Indifferent Eyes" is taken from "No Wilderness Deep Enough", enjoy!

Amenra - A Solitary Reign

The Belgian AMENRA have been paving their own headstrong way in the 12 years since their inception, from overlooked releases and poorly attended show to critically acclaimed albums, sold-out shows and the utmost respect of their listeners, peers and even heroes. Always putting heart and soul into every note, word, and image and changing the course of people’s lives everywhere their path leads them.

AMENRAs latest studio album "Mass VI" is an emotional rollercoaster until its very last second until Diaken is abruptly ended at its very climax, as the last breath of an expiring life.

Every band member is seemingly being stretched to their physical limits throughout. Colin puts in the performance of a lifetime, but he is inextricably intertwined to the guitarwork of Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove and Lennart Bossu is able to express unimaginable weight, both physical and spiritual, as well as weaving melodies of the utmost delicacy, while the rhythm section of Levy Seynaeve and Bjorn J. Lebon can either rumble like a consuming thunderstorm or retreat to the shadows with the same flowing spontaneity as the atmosphere dictates.

No love without pain. No life without death. No light without darkness. That is the conflict at the heart of Mass VI, at the heart of each and every one of us, at the heart of what it means to be human, to live and to love and to lose, and few other pieces of music will wrench that ambivalence out of us and present it in such an acutely overwhelming fashion.

It's hard to think of a better person to capture this sonic enormity than Billy Anderson. The legendary American producer was already the chosen one for "Mass V", and between NEUROSIS "Through Silver In Blood", SLEEPs "Dopesmoker", EYEHATEGODs "Dopesick", CATHEDRALs "Endtyme" or BRUTAL TRUTHs "Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom", among many others. "Mass VI" was recorded in the Belgian Ardennes, a region of thick forests in the south-east of the country, where the band was snowed in for a week.

"Mass VI" have been released in 2 versions of the album: one mixed by Billy Anderson and mastered by Justin Weis (released in US via Neurot Recordings) and another mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (released in Europe via Consouling Sounds).

These versions have different artwork, track titles, sound and track durations (the biggest difference is on the opening track "Children Of The Eye" - 11:49 for the European version vs. 9:41 for the US version).

Today's tune "A Solitary Reign" is taken from "Mass VI", enjoy!

Mastodon - Emperor of Sand

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Emperor Of Sand" is the seventh studio album from the American progressive metal dudes MASTODON.

The album was recorded at the Quarry in Kennesaw, Georgia and mixed at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles. The band worked with record producer Brendan O'Brien, whom they collaborated with on their 2009 album "Crack the Skye". The songs were recorded as originally arranged, then they revisited each track to edit and refine the sound. Drummer Brann Dailor completed his drum tracks and began drafting lyrics while guitars and bass were being recorded by other band members.

Scott Kelly of NEUROSIS and Kevin Sharp of BRUTAL TRUTH both appear as guest vocalists on "Scorpion Breath" and "Andromeda" (today's tune) respectively. Kelly has appeared as a guest vocalist on every MASTODON studio album since "Leviathan" (2004).

The masterpiece "Crack The Skye" (2009) was the drummer Brann Dailor's way of dealing with the unimaginable feelings of losing his sister, Skye Dailor, who committed suicide at age 14. "Emperor Of Sand" inspired by experiences members of the band had when family and friends were recently diagnosed with cancer.

The concept and story in "Emperor Of Sand" follows a desert wanderer who has been handed a death sentence. Themes of death and survival are woven into the song's lyrics.

"Emperor Of Sand" is an 11 pieces of musical death sentence, a piece of art. From the first note in "Sultan’s Curse", the classic MASTODON vocal way and the riffage you can feel that you are in heaven, even if the "death" is the topic here. To continue with the lead single "Show Yourself" that shows a more straight-forward MASTODON that forces the sand like a whirlwind in the faraway desert. "Precious Stones" is a modern beauty, melodic, progressive, difficult but sounds so easy, almost radio friendly, wow! "Steambreather" is a doomish, heavy and slow. "Roots Remain" and "Jaguar God" is two epic pieces, very emotional and stunning beautifully. "Andromeda" is a pretty straightforward tune, with an amazing heaviness. "Word To The Wise" have a gorgeous chorus, is just jaw-dropping.

"Emperor Of Sand" is a masterpiece from the guys, where every note that Troy, Bill and Brent hits feels pertinent and Brann incredible drumming is just freaking stunning, what a sound they manage to create and the balance is just perfect, what an album.

Sum: "Emperor Of Sand" is a massive package that contains their most ambitious compositions yet.

Vinyl version have a "Color your own cover"

Today's tune "Andromeda", taken from the bands latest release "Emperor of Sand".

Beastwars - Rivermen

From Wellington, New Zealand the sludge metal four-piece BEASTWARS abide by one steadfast maxim: Obey the Riff.

BEASTWARS could be described as "A mongrel mix of KYUSS, NEUROSIS, HIGH ON FIRE, KYLESA, BLACK COBRA, FU MANCHU and the mighty GODFLESH". Heavy riffages for heavy times, some real sonic soothsayers utilize the chaos that engulfs our world as ammunition for their defiant howls into the abyss.

"Blood Becomes Fire" is of course released on a beautiful Vinyl (:

Todays tune "Rivermen" is a nice piece with Whiskey soaked vocals and slow heavy riffs taken from the second album "Blood Becomes Fire", Released 2013. Enjoy!

Scott Kelly - We Let The Hell Come

Slowcore stripped down Country is what Scott Kelly have to offer on today's tune "We Let The Hell Come" taken from the Record "The Forgiven Ghost in Me", released 2012.

Scott Michael Kelly is one of three founding members of Oakland, California experimental metal band NEUROSIS, in which he is a vocalist and guitarist. He has been writing and publishing music since 1985 with NEUROSIS, TRIBES OF NEUROT, BLOOD AND TIME and his solo acoustic project. He is also involved in a project named SHRINEBUILDER involving Al Cisneros, Scott Weinrich, and Dale Crover. The first album from SHRINEBUILDER was released in October 2009. He has also guested on five studio albums by the band MASTODON. In addition to his musical projects, Scott, along with his bandmates in NEUROSIS, is co-owner of Neurot Recordings.

On his solo projects it is largely acoustic guitar music which is much different stylistically from the output of his primary band.

Steve Von Till - In Your Wings

Steve Von Till is best known as singer and guitarist for the post-metal band NEUROSIS, replacing Chad Salter in 1989. He is also in TRIBES OF NEUROT and CULPER RING and records solo work under both his given name and the moniker HARVESTMAN. His solo albums are composed of original songs and traditional folk arrangements, using minimalistic acoustic guitar and vocal styles.

Outside his semi-professional role as a musician, he works as an elementary school teacher. His father, Stephen F. von Till, Sr, is a civil attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area. His mother, Beth von Till, is a communications professor at San Jose State University. He resides with his wife Niela and children in Idaho. His sister, Katherine von Till is an actor/singer in L.A. She is Disney's Official Voice of Snow White -- only the 4th since 1937.

Playing with NEUROSIS in 2007, Von Till uses a guitar rig he has named the "Chain of death". He plays Stratocaster- and Telecaster-style guitars assembled from Warmoth parts. He employs Seymour Duncan Distortion (bridge) and Bartolini (neck) pickups, as well as Gibson P-90-style pickups. His guitars are routed through MXR Phaser and Blue Box pedals, a Moogerfooger MF-101 Lowpass Filter and MF-102 Ring Modulator, a Dunlop Uni-Vibe, POG octave pedal, a Parachute wah, empress tap tremolo, a true bypass routing strip, mutron phaser, a ProCo Rat and an Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synthesizer. The signal is routed to a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV with a Mesa cab and a Fender ’65 Twin Reverb Reissue combo.

As with his previous solo works, it’s Von Till’s weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar that provide the foundation. The songs are informed by a worldview that attempts to peer beyond the veil of the physical world and recognize the symbols and messages that often go unnoticed.

Today's tune "In Your Wings" is taken from his 4th solo album "A Life Unto Itself" (2015)

Live @ L'Espace B - Paris - 05 07 2015

Colossus - Pillars of Perennity

Swedish Colossus sets the mood for this Saturday, true to their name, this powerful trio performs a headstrong metal with roots deep in the impenetrable mire of the stoner/doom/sludge tradition nuansed with streaks of progressive rock, post metal and psychadelica.

A wide blend of influences are entwined and results in an accomplished and coherent music that is as direct and powerful as it is multi layered and meandering. Names that are commonly mentioned in relation to Colossus are Mastodon, Neurosis, Kyuss and Tool.

In spring 2012 Colossus entered Top Floor Studios and came out with a heavy and organic full length debut that not only outshines the EP on every topic but aims for a whole other level of musical composition and soundscape. The album has been mixed by Pontus Norgren and is guested by Lars G Petrov of Entombed and drummer extraordinaire Morgan Ågren of Mats/Morgan Band, Frank Zappa.

Todays tune "Pillars of Perennity" (featuring Lars G Petrov "Entombed") it's taken from the upcoming album "Wake", is an album that I really look forward to, of course on the real format Vinyl "Hint".

Royal Thunder - Whispering World

Rising out of Atlanta, Georgia, Royal Thunder have been conjuring stoner rock grooves out of the Southern heat since they were formed in 2006 by guitarist Josh Weaver. Featuring singer and bassist Mlny Parsonz, drummer Lee Smith, and guitarist Josh Coleman, the band's hazy, psychedelic sound evokes the early days of stoner and space rock, with Parsonz's soulful vocals bringing an element of dark drama to the band's swaggering sound. Royal Thunder made their recorded debut in 2009 with a self-titled EP, which the band self-released before signing to Relapse shortly afterwards, where the label re-released the album the following year. Their first full-length, CVI, arrived two years later in 2012. Royal Thunder has sharing the stage with a range of artists including Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Wovenhand, Birds of Avalon, Kylesa, and many more.

Todays tune "Whispering World" is taken from the full-length debut "CVI". A hard-hitting tune, Enjoy!

Keep this band on your radar in 2012 and beyond.
