Wear Your Wounds - Shrinking Violet

WEAR YOUR WOUNDS was created by CONVERGE founder Jacob Bannon. Initially conceived as a solo project, it evolved into a five-piece band that often works with collaborating musicians.

In 2017 WEAR YOUR WOUNDS released "WYW" (debut double album) and "Arthritic Heart" (a New Noise Magazine single). A live band was then assembled for a number of shows including Roadburn Festival 2017 and Desert Festival UK. Later on that year their "Dunedevil" (an experimental album) was released; a companion piece to Bannon's abstract art book of the same name. In 2018 Wear Your Wounds released their "Live at the BBC" 12" LP at Maida Vale Studio (MV4). That year WEAR YOUR WOUNDS also played select shows on the East Coast and Europe including an appearance at Roadburn Festival 2018, which was also curated by Bannon.

“Rust On The Gates Of Heaven” is the new album from WEAR YOUR WOUNDS. The release marks the first time the official lineup of the band; Jacob Bannon (CONVERGE), Mike McKenzie (THE RED CHORD, STOMACH EARTH, UNRAVELLER, etc), Adam McGrath (CAVE IN, NOMAD STONES, etc), Sean Martin (TWITCHING TONGUES, ex-HATEBREED, ex-KID CUDI), and Chris Maggio (ex-TRAP THEM, ex-SLEIGH BELLS, etc) have properly written and recorded together. It also features musicians Ben Chisholm (CHELSEA WOLFE, WHITE HORSE) and Gared O’Donnell (PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS, HAWKS AND DOVES) collaborating throughout.

Mike McKenzie: Guitars, Vocals, Piano, and Electronics
Sean Martin: Guitars and Electronics
Adam McGrath: Guitars and Vocals

Collaborating Musicians:

Grave Pleasures - Joy Through Death

A death eternal
A death as old as the stars
A death that’s beautiful
Death takes us out of this world
a death certifiable
a death that’s full of surprise
a death unconquerable
Death is the meaning of life

Thats the chorus of today's tune "Joy Through Death" by the Finnish death-rock outfit GRAVE PLEASURES, taken from the bands latest release "Motherblood", release on September 29th, 2017.

The Video of "Joy Through Death" was directed by David Fitt, the glossy visual stars Eva Dereta as a young woman with a penchant for dancing on other's peoples graves – literally. Following an encounter with a mysterious old man, our heroine pops in a GRAVE PLEASURES cassette and proceeds to get footloose in the cemetery, strutting through rows of headstones and shadowboxing in front of sobbing statuettes; by video's end, everyone else in the graveyard's getting down as well. It's no "Thriller," but it's close. Check it out now.

Converge - A Single Tear

"Five years since their last release, CONVERGE returned with "The Dusk In Us" last year, a brutal but beautiful album that shows the band’s artistic evolution while still capturing their classic sound.

"The Dusk In Us" is the ninth full-length from the Boston-based music innovators that consists of vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller.

CONVERGE formed in Massachusetts in 1990, then made their debut with 1994’s "Halo in a Haystack". Soon regarded as pioneers within the aggressive music arena, the band had a major breakthrough with their landmark 2001 album release "Jane Doe" praised as “iconic” by the A.V. Club (who also noted that Jane Doe “reaches canonical status with every re-listen”). "The Dusk In Us" arrives as the follow-up to 2012’s "All We Love We Leave Behind", an album that "Consequence Of Sound" called “as skull-cleaving as it is beautiful” and that made its way onto Pitchfork’s Best New Music list.

Today's tune and the album-opening "A Single Tear", where we get some energetic drums, caustic riffs and a harsh screaming vocals.  The tune is about becoming a parent, and the perspective and strength it can give.  Enjoy!

Mutoid Man - Kiss Of Death

MUTOID MAN and their sophomore full-length album, "War Moans” takes the position 26 on this years Top 50 Best Albums 2017.

These three-man crew of crazy talented musicians. Featuring Cave In guitarist-vocalist Steve Brodsky, CONVERGE drummer Ben Koller and Vermefug bassist Nick Cageao, MUTOID MAN stirred up some buzz with 2015’s ”Bleeder”, read about it here!.

"Everyone knows that Tom Jones deflowered Elvira, and by her own account she was nearly torn in half by his legendary girth,” Brodsky recounts. “I like to imagine 'Kiss of Death' playing during that scene - easily the most painfully heavy jam on the new album.” Indeed! MUTOID MAN bring the chunky riffs throughout “Kiss of Death”.

A beautiful blue version on Vinyl
Enjoy today’s tune "Kiss of Death”, were in the video they are performing live from God City Studios.

Cancer Bats - Beelzebub

Today I pick a random tune from the list of unplayed tunes.

The mighty Canadian CANCER BATS released a music video from "Searching for Zero", their fifth studio album which came out in March 2015. "Beelzebub" is the band’s third music video from the album, following “True Zero,” and, “Satellites.”

CANCER BATS take a wide variety of influences from heavy metal subgenres and fuse them into hardcore and punk rock and also include elements of Southern rock. Their sound has thus been likened to sludge metal, as well as to that of metalcore bands such as CONVERGE and HATEBREED. The members of CANCER BATS have also toured and recorded as a BLACK SABBATH cover band under the name BAT SABBATH.

Liam Cormier day job is fronting the CANCER BATS but his passion is not only in music. MCN spent some time with Liam Cormier before a trip to Norway to play a festival to find out what it’s like balancing life on tour and riding motorbikes…, read it here!

Today's tune "Beelzebub" is taken from the fifth studio album, "Searching for Zero", it was released on March 10, 2015.

Mutoid Man - Bleeder

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Bleeder" is the debut album with singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky (CAVE IN), drummer Ben Koller (CONVERGE, ALL PIGS MUST DIE) and Nick Cageao on bass.

"Bleeder" is a riff monster of rank, a red-hot, nasty hard-rock party with unstoppable energy and power. With an stellar musicianship and a chemistry like this guys have is just stunning. The woolsock rocking melodies from CAVE IN and acrobatics from CONVERGE together with a sound guy from Brooklyn metal bar Saint Vitus can make a furious knotty album like this is amazing, this is a real killer.

MUTOID MAN knocks me off totally, If I heard this album earlier it would have been on top 10 of the 2015's album summary. This guys soars something between classic hardrock and MASTEDON to THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN with ZAPPA influences. Crazy, oh yes but damn so good! It's a short record of 10 songs that clocks in at 29 minutes only, but it's an energetic and fun time that you want to repeat more than one time.

Take today's tune "Bridgeburner" that is a real catchy killer that will get you to sing along even as they 1000's of tempo shifts.

Summary: Yes, You need this!

Today's tune "Bridgeburner" shot while recording in Salem, MA at GodCity Studios with Kurt Ballou. The studio version of this song is taken from the album "Bleeder", released June 30, 2015.

VAILS - Galactic Triceratops

The Sludge/Noise/Punk duo VAILS from Swansea, Wales, released their debut EP "Galactic Triceratops" pretty recently, March 19th 2015 to be more exact. That there is something with the duo's that appeals to me is nothing new, I like that only with two people can get so much with so little. With "Galactic Triceratops" do VAILS placing the cabinet in front of the door and creates a hard and outlandish EP where the beast is forcing it self out of the amplifier and really messing up the life existence.

VAILS consisting of Bassist Owen Street and drummer Mathew Ham.

"Galactic Triceratops" was recorded by Joe Garcia (OM, TEMPLES FESTIVAL) and mastered by Nick Zampiello (CONVERGE, ISIS)

With a hard-riffing melodic and noisy sludge and punkish groove have this duo created a well made EP that you should get, it's available to buy here, give it a chance and downloaded for Name Your Price from their Bandcamp page. I wish they release this on Vinyl.

Todays tune "Galactic Triceratops" is the title track from the new EP, enjoy!

Cancer Bats - True Zero

The Canadian hardcore punkers CANCER BATS have released their fifth studio album "Searching For Zero" a week ago (March 10th).

The band is composed of vocalist Liam Cormier, guitarist Scott Middleton, drummer Mike Peters and bassist Jaye R. Schwarzer. Cancer Bats take a wide variety of influences from heavy metal subgenres and fuse them into hardcore punk and punk rock and include elements of sludge metal and southern rock. Their sound has also been compared to metalcore bands such as CONVERGE and HATEBREED. The members of CANCER BATS have also toured and recorded as a BLACK SABBATH cover band under the name BAT SABBATH.

The album includes today's tune "True Zero", for which the Jim Agapito-directed video can be seen below, a tune that will shake any leg that are freezed to the chair.

The iTunes version of the album will include two exclusive tracks titled "Kill Me Please…" and "Rust and Bone".

Produced by Ross Robinson (AT THE DRIVE-IN, SLIPKNOT, THE CURE, SEPULTURA, GLASSJAW), "Searching For Zero" is simultaneously the most melodic, yet menacing CANCER BATS release. The record incorporates the crude hardcore punk of their 2006 debut, "Birthing The Giant", and more metal leanings of 2008's "Hail Destroyer", while pushing the heavy hybrid sounds of 2010's "Mayors Bears Scraps And Bones" and 2012's darker "Dead Set On Living" to a new plateau. The choruses are hookier, the screams more savage, the riffs more vicious, the songs more powerful. That the album is inspired by their metal idols BLACK SABBATH can be heard in the melodic elements, both musically and vocally.

Current members:

Liam Cormier – lead vocals (2004–present)
Scott Middleton – lead guitar, backing vocals (2004–present)
Mike Peters – drums, percussion (2005–present)
Jaye R. Schwarzer – bass, backing vocals (2007–present)

Todays tune "True Zero" is taken from the latest release "Searching For Zero", enjoy!

Converge - Trespasses

Now we almost reached the end of this year and as usual, it is time to sum it all up with this year's best albums and give thumbs up for nice concerts and other events. First up we present this year's top 20 albums. Where you get the first 10 at once.

Since we can not quite agree on a common list for this year's top 10 albums, we will do as we did last year, but Thetania will only do a top five since she is pretty busy with work. This mean that it will be a list from each one of us on the same day, one list position in the morning and same in the evening, it will generate a lot of music here at the Tune Of The Day during these days. This year's list has been super difficult to tie together, started with a Top 50 and was freaking hard to remove tunes, ended up that I had to go on the most listening records and many that, in the beginning was obvious was removed. Right or wrong, judge yourself, hard as hell, I must say. However, I miss some records which I unfortunately did not had time to listen to and whereby they are not included. I think this year has been absolutely crazy on the album releases, has broken my purchasing budget by horse lengths. Really hope next year will be calmer, so one have time to catch up a bit.

We start by presenting the positions outside the Top 10 that I, Stones have, that is 11-20 just like last year.

Top 11 - 20 on Tune Of The Day

11. Beardfish - The Void
12. The Sword - Apocryphon
13. Meshuggah - Koloss
14. Black Country Communion - Afterglow
15. Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
16. Testament - Dark Roots Of Earth
16. Paradise Lost - Tragic Idol
17. Mando Diao - Infruset
18. Ne Obliviscaris - Portal Of I
20. Horisont - Second Assault

Today I pick a song from an album that has grown a lot recently, but unfortunately it has got too little playing time in order to stretch higher and pinch a position in the Top 10. Converge "All We Love We Leave Behind" is a record that invites you to dance in a little more violent way than usual. This record is actually really good and I recommended this highly. Converge is an American progressive hardcore band from Salem, Massachusetts formed in 1990. The group comprises vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. Playing a blend of hardcore punk and heavy metal, Converge has helped to define many of the elements of the metalcore genre. According to Allmusic, Converge are "regarded as one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground".

Todays tune "Trespasses" is taken from the eighth studio album "All We Love We Leave Behind". The album was released on October 9, 2012 through Epitaph Records.
