DeWolff - Wolffpack

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Dutch psychedelic Southern blues rockers DEWOLFF returned earlier this year with a new album "Wolffpack".

I'm sorry to say, but this is another record that had to stand and wait kindly in the album box with newcomers, with a constant flood of new records, it's easy to miss some. I do not know why this one, I guess I have to blame temporary confusion, but now it's here, better late than never.

The kaleidoscopic warriors were not long into their 2019 "Tascam Tapes" European Tour when the Covid19 pandemic broke and they, like so many others, had to turn back and head home. However, DEWOLFF is not a band to sit still. When it came to studio album number nine, they had no intention of just waiting for things to blow over.

DEWOLFF is a very creative bunch of guys that over the past three years they have released "Thrust" (2018), "Live & Outta Sight II" (2019) and "Tascam Tapes" (2020) – and despite the pandemic cutting short their touring last year the trio set about creating "Wolffpack", an antidote to the shoestring Tascam Tapes.

"Wolffpack" have been been created in their studio bunker in the Medieval town of Utrecht, The Netherlands. The album may feel a bit scattered to new listeners, but with a wide range of their previous creations where all styles are used again, a bit like the raisins from their own cake are picked. So it will be a bit difficult to decide what kind of genre we really get served here. Anyhow, this is a great spin where the brothers Pablo and Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso have created another majestic record. Where they are experimenting with soundscapes, fuzzy riffing, swamp-rock with horse shoe vibes, infectionasied melodies that makes you as a listner a happy human beening.

The album opens up with a soulful funk rocker of "Yes You Do", a tune that is very catchy. Followed in the same vein in "Treasure City Moonchild", where the third song "Do Me" is a power ballad, a really beautiful one. "Sweet Loretta" is a bluesy one and has a pretty interesting story about "Loretta, the protagonist's childhood sweetheart. She has a rich dad, but he's really conservative, and so she can only inherit his money if she marries a man. But she's lesbian. So, the protagonist, who's also out for this old guy's money, suggests they play pretend and marry so they can split the money." "Half Of Your Love" is another funky, light disco one. Great vibe that get's your legs move. "Lady J" has some cool lyrics that are based on the idea that Lady Justice seems to have a scale that dosen't measure the "weight" of your crime but the tone of your skin. The tune have a great 70s groove. "Roll Up The Rise" is a car driving tune, think Cadillac. The blusey fuzzed-up "Bona Fide" is a thrill and "R U My Saviour" continues but with added horns to spice it up a bit. The album closes up with the folk bluesih forlorn "Hope Train", inspired by Colson Whitehead’s brilliant, Pulitzer winning novel. DEWOLFF really experimenting with hazy soundscapes, loose fizzy riffs, nice and well thought lyrics and marvelous groovy melodies to keep the intrest high. Highly Recomended! Released by Mascot Label Group on 5 February 2021

Sum: A really creative release by these Dutch blues rockers.

Today's tune "Yes You Do", taken from the album "Wolffpack", enjoy!

Natural Child - Out In The Country

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, NATURAL CHILD are a trio whose good and greasy style is informed by Southern rock, vintage country-rock, laid-back Laurel Canyon sounds, '70s-style boogie, a dash of hard rock, and most likely a careful balance of liquor and bong hits (the bookmark icon for the band's official blog is a tiny pot leaf, and their lyrics often confirm their fondness for recreational marijuana).

NATURAL CHILD were formed in 2009 by bassist Wez Traylor and drummer Zack Martin, who had just left another Nashville-based band, the TURBO FRUITS. Singer and guitarist Seth Murray previously played in THE HORRIBLY WRONG while living in Bloomington, Indiana.

NATURAL CHILD released their first 7" within months of their first practice, and in their first two years, they managed to play over 200 shows per annum. In 2010, NATURAL CHILD brought out a cassette-only EP, "Bodyswitchers". In 2012, they signed on with the respected California indie Burger Records, releasing two records that same year, "For The Love Of The Game" and "Hard In Heaven". Followed by 2014 "Dancin' With Wolves", 2016 "Okey Dokey" and the self titled "Natural Child" in 2020.

Today's tune "Out In The Country" taken from the album "Dancin' With Wolves", the Video is made for Rollo & Grady Sessions on May 14, 2013. Directed by Conrad Heinz & Josh Ball of Ender Productions. Audio Capture, Mix & Master - Jarrett Bostich.

The Outlaws - Green Grass & High Tides

Sunday, time for a classic. THE OUTLAWS are a Southern rock/country rock band best known for their 1975 hit "There Goes Another Love Song" and extended guitar jam "Green Grass and High Tides" from their 1975 debut album, plus their 1980 cover of the Stan Jones classic "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky".

"Green Grass and High Tides" is a song by the Southern rock band Outlaws. It is the tenth and final track on the band's debut album, "Outlaws". The song is one of their best known and has received extensive play on album-oriented radio stations, although it was never released as a single. The song is notable for having two extended guitar solos that stretch the song to nearly 10 minutes.

A cover version of the song is playable in the music video game Rock Band, acting as the final song for the guitar's solo career. Through the game, the song saw some renewed popularity in the late 2000s.

Outlaws founding member Hughie Thomasson said:

I wrote that song in St Augustine, Florida. We went to a cookout on the beach and everybody forgot to bring their guitars. I was standing by the ocean and there was a breeze and the words kept coming to me. It’s about all the rock stars I liked that died had come back and been playing a show just for me. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. And eventually more of course.

THE OUTLAWS founding member Henry Paul says,

"From what I gather, there was an album out, the best of THE ROLLING STONES, called 'High Tides and Green Grass.' That was the name of THE ROLLING STONES' greatest hits - this is like 1966 - and I think it was a manifestation of that title turned into reverse, 'Green Grass and High Tides.' I know that much. And I know that it was a song written for rock and roll illuminaries, from Janis Joplin to Jimi Hendrix, and it had nothing to do with marijuana. But it had to do with, I think, a specific person's lyrical look at rock and roll legends. 'As kings and queens bow and play for you.' It's about Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. 'Castles of stone, soul, and glory.' A lot of it is just sort of a collage of words that really don't have all that much to do with anything, they just fit and sounded right. But I have to say it's one of my favorite lyrics. My songwriting is more Steinbeck, really rooted in accuracy and reality; this is definitely Alice In Wonderland. It's the whole 'White Rabbit.' It's sort of like one of those magic lyrical moments that will forever be mysteriously unclearly conceived."

"Green Grass and High Tides" was the usual show closer for THE OUTLAWS and the 20 minute+ version can be found on the concert album Bring It Back Alive (1978). The song is mentioned in MOLLY HATCHETs song "Gator Country", on MOLLY HATCHETt (1978), and was featured on the Harley Davidson Road Songs album in 1995. The song also featured as a tribute to the recently departed from LYNYRD SKYNYRD. The intro was: We'd like to take a minute to remember some very good friends of ours, and friends of yours--the LYNYRD SKYNYRD Band.

It was featured in the award-winning TV series Breaking Bad, in the second season episode "Phoenix".

Today's clip is Live At The Tower Theater 1982, featuring Hughie Thomasson - Guitar and Vocals, Freddie Salem - Guitar and Vocals, David Dix - Drums, Rick Cua - Bass and Vocals

He Is Legend - Air Raid

"Air Raid", is a tune and video from Wilmington, North Carolina's rockers HE IS LEGEND, see it below. The song is taken from the band's latest album, "Few", released on April 28 via Spinefarm Records.

The band's current lineup is front man Schuylar Croom, guitarists Adam Tanbouz and Denis Desloge, bassist Matt Williams and drummer Sam Huff.

The band has enveloped from their previous musical style where they had a blend of Southern metal and Metalcore and now today they mixes a more softer style like Southern rock and alternative metal with a psychedelic rock sludge metal spice.

Like today's tune "Air Raid" where you get a wall of low rumbling sound, gentle vocals before it gets interrupted by a jangling, slack-wristed guitar riff and a vocal with more punch in it's melody. The Video was directed By Justin Reich.

38 Special - Hold On Loosely

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Hold On Loosely" is a 1981 rock song by 38 SPECIAL and the first song to appear on their fourth studio album "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" in 1981. It is the first single from the album, and made it to #3 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song also later appeared on their 1987 album Flashback: "The Best of 38 SPECIAL" and their 1999 album "Live at Sturgis". It is also notable for having been the 13th music video to be played on the first day that MTV aired in 1981.

With "Hold On Loosely", 38 SPECIAL and SURIVIORs Jim Peterik, who co-wrote the song, captured an emotional tug of war that was instantly identifiable to every single walking, raging pack of hormones who was alive in the ‘80s, both male and female.

The situation: you meet that amazing person and fall hard, really hard, for them. So of course from that point forward, you have to make sure that they are aware of your undying love for them, each and every day.

The next steps that follow: they either advise you that they’ve taken out a restraining order, or if they’re mellower about things, they just let you know that it would probably be a good idea to back off for a while.

So rather than get too serious right off the bat, .38 vocalist Don Barnes shares the sage advice given to him by a “girl I left some years ago,” who told him “Just hold on loosely / But don’t let her go / If you cling too tightly / You’re gonna lose control.”

Don’t get nuts — just give her that “space to breathe in” and everything will work out just fine.

"Hold On Loosely", the lead track on the band’s fourth album, 1981’s ‘Wild Eyed Southern Boys,’ helped create the mold for a string of easy-going hits that the .38 members and Peterik would craft together with similar chart success. Peterik continues to write with the band to this day, and worked closely with the group on their most recent studio album ‘Drivetrain’ in 2004.

Speaking about the range of influences that show up in this song, Jim Peterik told us: "The bridge was straight out of the Doobie Brothers songbook. If I look at that song, it's kind of a meld of a lot of influences of mine from that time. The eighth notes are very Cars-like from that time and the bridge was 'What a Fool Believes' upside down. It was a great moment and led to a series of .38 SPECIAL songs that I wrote with them. After that came 'Caught Up In You,' 'Fantasy Girl,' 'Wild-Eyed Southern Boys' and all of those. It was a great run."

Don Barnes of .38 SPECIAL came up with the title. It was something he heard Dinah Shore say on her talk show when she had a guest on talking about giving her husband space in their relationship.

38 SPECIAL (also written .38 SPECIAL) is an American rock band that was formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Enjoy today's tune. Here is the music video by 38 SPECIAL performing Hold On Loosely. (C) 1981 A&M Records

The Diamond Man Clan - Mediocre

Monday, New Week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

There is no doubt that Sweden can produce great rock. We all know SKRAECKOEDLAN, GHOST, GRAVEYARD, HONG FAUX, GREEN LEAF, DOOZER, GIN LADY, IN FLAMES and can continue to line up band after band, the list will be long but I decided to end with the flag on the top :)

TDMC (THE DIAMOND MAN CLAN) is one of those. Gothenburg Blues and Dirty Stoner Rock with a folkish pop melody, hooky killer riffs that will stun you and great honest lyrics from a vocalist that kick ass.

"Mediocre" is a really fun album to spinn. An album with a interesting variation, For one second they stand on a small half rotten stage in a basement far far away, where the condensation drops from the ceiling and the floor is stickier than glue, the smells of dismissed beer obscures the atmosphere. To the next second they stand there in the sun on the balcony, barefoot, with their dirty trashed jeans, white muddy t-shirt and half-broken braces and singing for the wild nature that moves in line with the music. But most of the time they stand in the middle of those two and serves the listener with good mix of great tunes. The album is much better than the album title says "Mediocre".

The album contains some really good tunes like the title track stoner alike "Mediocre", blues rocker "Sweet Caroline", the redneck, balcony rocker "Help Me Love Again", the half pace "Wade", the more popisher "A Reason And A Way" with a great melodic verse to the powerful "The Huntsmen And The Hounds".

Sum: "Mediocre" is an album you should not miss, check it up.

TDMC concits of:

Paul Bäcklin – Vocals, guitar
Johan Weber – Guitar
Olof Gadd – Bass
Anton Olofsson – Percussion
Felix Leonhart Sjöberg – Drums

Today's tune "Mediocre" is the title tune from the latest album with TDMC, enjoy!

The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Midnight Rider" is a song by the American rock band THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. It was the second single from their second studio album "Idlewild South" (1970), released on Capricorn Records. The song was primarily written by vocalist Gregg Allman, who first began composing it at a rented cabin outside of Macon, Georgia. He enlisted the help of roadie Robert Kim Payne to complete the song's lyrics. He and Payne broke into Capricorn Sound Studios to complete a demo of the song.

While the original ALLMAN BROTHERS release of the song did not chart, "Midnight Rider" was much more successful in cover versions. Gregg Allman's solo version of the song, released in 1973, was its biggest chart success; it was a top 20 hit in the U.S. and Canada. A cover by Jamaican singer, Paul Davidson, represented its biggest peak in the United Kingdom, where it hit number ten. Country artist Willie Nelson also recorded a version of the song that peaked at number six on U.S. country charts.

"Midnight Rider" originated during the group's time spent at Idlewild South, a $165-a-month farmhouse they rented on a lake outside of Macon, Georgia. Allman felt free to smoke marijuana with no police around, which contributed to his writing at the cabin. Its genesis was quick: the song came to him out of nowhere, and he completed a rough draft in just over an hour of writing. He found himself stuck on the song's third verse, which he regarded as an especially important component of the song: "it's kind of the epilogue to the whole thing," he later wrote. In the middle of the night, he went to roadie Kim Payne, who was keeping watch over the band's warehouse, where they kept their equipment. Payne helped him write the first two lines of the third verse: "We were getting high and, honestly, he was starting to irritate me—because he was singing this song over and over and I got sick of hearing the band play the same shit over and over again until they got it right," he later recalled. "So I just threw out the line, 'I've gone past the point of caring / some old bed I’ll soon be sharing.'"

Thankful for Payne's help, he told him he would give him a percentage of its royalties should it become a success. Payne was not originally listed as a songwriter on the song, so he later had Allman contact Phil Walden to produce a contract that allowed him five percent of its future royalties.

Allman wanted to record it immediately, but had no keys to Capricorn Sound Studios, which was adjacent to the warehouse. They phoned both producer Johnny Sandlin and Paul Hornsby who "told us to go to hell, come back in the morning," according to Payne. Intent on recording the song, Allman and Payne broke into the building, with Payne smashing a window on a door to allow him to unlock it. After managing to turn on the recording console and microphones, Allman recorded a demo by himself on acoustic guitar. Unable to find the band members, he enlisted friend Twiggs Lyndon to perform bass guitar on a rough demo, though Lyndon did not know how to play the instrument. Allman instructed him to play the bassline he had envisioned and Lyndon practiced it multiple times to prepare. He later found Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe and had him perform congas on the demo. In the final studio recording, Duane Allman plays acoustic guitar, as he had enough studio experience to produce a nice acoustic sound.

Allman & Cher

Allman called it "the song I’m most proud of in my career."

"Midnight Rider" uses traditional folk and blues themes of desperation, determination, and a man on the run:

I've got one more silver dollar,
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no ...
Not gonna let 'em catch
The midnight rider.

Gregg Allman last concert took place in October 2016, and he continued to cancel concerts citing "serious health issues". In April 2017, he denied reports that he had entered hospice care, but was resting at home on doctor's orders. One month later, Allman died at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on May 27, 2017, due to complications from liver cancer. He was 69 years old. He will be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where his brother Duane, and fellow band member Berry Oakley are also interred.

Before his death, Allman recorded his last album, Southern Blood, with producer Don Was at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The album was recorded with his then-current backing band. It was set originally for a January 2017 release; his manager Lehman confirmed the album is now set for a September release.

In My Cross to Bear, Allman reflected on his life and career:

Music is my life's blood. I love music, I love to play good music, and I love to play music for people who appreciate it. And when it's all said and done, I'll go to my grave and my brother will greet me, saying, "Nice work, little brother—you did all right." I must have said this a million times, but if I died today, I have had me a blast.

Today's tune "Midnight Rider" is Recorded Live: 9/10/1973 - Grand Opera House - Macon, GA

Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Traveller is the highly anticipated Mercury Records Nashville solo debut album from rising superstar Chris Stapleton. This Kentucky native first got his start a decade ago as the lead singer of the bluegrass band, THE STEELDRIVERS. Stapleton is born 1978 and is an American country and bluegrass musician that is already a world-renowned songwriter, Stapleton has enjoyed six number-one songs including the five-week number-one "Never Wanted Nothing More" recorded by Kenny Chesney, "Love's Gonna Make It Alright" recorded by George Strait, and "Come Back Song" recorded by Darius Rucker. As a songwriter, over 150 of Stapleton's songs have appeared on albums by such artists as Adele, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. He has co-written with notable artists like Vince Gill, Peter Frampton and Sheryl Crow.

In 2015, Stapleton released his debut album Traveller. It reached number one on the Billboard 200. Stapleton won the 2015 Country Music Association Award for Best Male Vocalist, New Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for Traveller. He received four Grammy Award nominations for the 2016 ceremony, including Album of the Year.

Recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio A (with additional production at The Castle and Blackbird Studio), Traveller was produced by Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) and recorded by Vance Powell (Jack White). In addition to renditions of Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove's "Tennessee Whiskey" and Don Sampson's "Was It 26," the album features twelve original songs, including fan-favorite "Sometimes I Cry."

The album is an old-school country record mixed with Southern rock. Tracks on the album features electric guitar, mandolin, and acoustic guitar. "The Devil Named Music" exclaims the hard life on the road, "Might As Well Get Stoned" features resignation lyrics, and "Sometimes I Cry" is a blues song. "Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore" shrouds reflections about his father in the language of religious backsliding.

This is a damn good record that works for any Southern rock, Country music lovers.

Stapleton wrote or co-wrote all but two of the album's 14 tracks. The album features a blues-influenced cover of George Jones' single "Tennessee Whiskey", and Charlie Daniels' "Was It 26," written by Don Sampson.

Today's tune "Tennessee Whiskey" is the title of a country song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. It was originally recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name. The song was covered by American country music artist George Jones, whose version was released in August 1983 as the third single from his album Shine On. Coe joined Jones onstage to sing a chorus on the song at the inaugural Farm Aid in 1985. It remained a mainstay in Jones' live set, with the singer often substituting the name of whatever city or town he was in for "Tennessee" in the second chorus.

The clip is from when Stapleton joins “CBS This Morning: Saturday” to perform “Tennessee Whiskey” on Saturday Sessions.

Tishamingo - Devil's Love Song

Southern rock was the focus yesterday, we continue to walk on the same path.

In an industry that sometimes squanders its most valuable resource, TISHAMINGO is a breath of fresh air. Having toured extensively for the last half-decade, the Georgia-based quartet has honed its collective musical instincts and songwriting craft to make some very interesting music.

For the last half-decade, TISHAMINGO has grown tighter as a playing unit and increased its core fan base through constant touring (on both sides of the Atlantic). The Point, reflects this personal and musical evolution and marks a new chapter in the band’s ever-advancing story.

Sorry to say that "The Point" was the last record they released and this was 2007, nothing more have come out from the band, looks like they are playing once in awhile, but not more on a professional basis.

Today's tune "Devil's Love Song" is taken from TISHAMINGOs 3rd and last full-length album "The Point", produced by John Kurzweg (known for his work with CREED and PUDDLE OF MUDD). Release Date Feb 20, 2007
