Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure

Hi.
Have you missed me?
The incoherrent ramblings and odd thoughts of the Chief Rebel Angel, guest-terrorizer of Tune Of The Day?
Perhaps you have. Perhaps not. Today I am here anyway, and today's topic is tomorrow.
Or, rather, the month that starts tomorrow.
November.
In Sweden called "black November", a month were more or less the entire country staggers around in darkness, dreading the oncoming winter. It is usually before the snow settles, but you are guaranteed to get slett, snow, heavy rains, fog och freezing temperatures.
No wonder there are a lot of metal bands hailing from the north, especially extreme metal bands...

So, to celebrate this, I thought I'd drag one of my habits in to Tune Of The Day.
Every friday, I have something called "Tip Of The Week" on my own blog Metal!, and during November these tips focus on music that suits the Swedish wet autumn darkness.
Dark, dreary, moody and a bit depressing (hey, it's sounds awful when you put it in writing like that, but as we all know - one way of getting the darkness out of your system is enjoying music, so it's actually not as bad as it sounds...).
And guess what?
I'll do the same on Tune Of The Day this year! Yihaah!
Today, we'll start with an excellent band that also has the name to kick off such a small series.
NOVEMBERS DOOM.

This one is from 2005, so it's got jus shy of a decade in this world.
I return to it frequently just because it is a great album in total, and especially the title track is a killer song.
Heavy, moody, dark but still managing to hit that spot within my heart that makes it a joy to listen to, that makes all that heavy darkness seem easier to carry somehow.
In short, a perfect soundtrack to what lies ahead for the next month.

The band hails from Chicago, and the members on this fifth album were:
  • Paul Kuhr – vocals
  • Vito Marchese– guitar
  • Larry Roberts – guitar
  • Joe Nunez – drums, percussion
  • Mike Lagros- bass
The album produced two singles, besides the title track also the half ballad "Autumn Reflection".
Welcome to the darkness. Welcome to november. Welcome to The Pale Haunt Departure!

Crucified Barbara - The Crucifier

Today I thought we check out a video from the Swedish all-female hard rock band "Crucified Barbara"

Crucified Barbara formed in Stockholm in 1998. Crucified Barbara started out in 1998 as a punk rock band, but soon they changed their primary style to hard rock . They signed in 2003 with GMR Music Group of Stockholm. Recordings took place in Kristianopel, Sweden at Pama Studios/Blakk Records with producer-engineer Mankan Sedenberg during the spring of 2004. Their advance debut single from their first album In Distortion We Trust, was "Losing the Game". It was released on 8 December 2005 and went straight to No. 8 on the Swedish music charts. The video to accompany it was recorded and produced by M Industries. The album was released in Sweden on 19 January and is available outside Sweden in several countries including the U.K, the U.S.A, France, Germany, and Benelux. In 2006, they contributed two songs, "Killed by Death" and "Please Don't Touch", to St. Valentines Day Massacre, a tribute album to Motörhead.

Crucified Barbara's second album, Til Death Do Us Party, was released in Scandinavia on 11 February 2009 and in the rest of Europe on February 27. It was produced in part by Mats Levén (known for producing albums by Yngwie Malmsteen, Krux, and Therion, among other bands within that genre. Mats also sang vocals on the song "Jennyfer".

Todays tune "The Crucifier" is taken from the third album "The Midnight Chase", released in Japan and Europe in 2012. The album was recorded in the Music-A-Matic Studio in Göteborg, Sweden. It was produced by Chips Kiesby and mixed by Henryk Lipp.

Scorpions - The Zoo

Hi again, Spader Ess is back. This time I will direct my spotlight towards Germany, and to be more precise, Scorpions. Another band that have been a big inspiration to me, just to fade away into indifference.

The band formally formed in 1965, and their music has ranged from hard rock, to heavy metal, to meeehhh.
With their first album, "Lonesome Crow" from 1972, the band launch itself towards a great career, that in my world lasted until somewhere around 1988 when Scorpions released their album, "Savage Amusement", which in my opinion was the start of crap and decades of sleazy ballad goo.

Don’t get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with a good ballad at times (heck, quite a few ballads are some of my favorite songs of all time) and Scorpions had already released a bunch of great ballads like “In Trance” and “Holiday”. But now the band more or less became synonym with languorous ballads, both new and old, that made sugar seem bitter and harsh. It’s not a coincident that Scorpions have been included in most “Power Ballad” projects that has seen the day of light as they have done quite a few. Maybe only matched by Nazareth. Thinking of it, Nazareth has done about the same journey for me too. They started out about the same time. Great early records that made it into the mid eighties before loosing my attention. Both bands released groundbreaking Live albums, "Tokyo Tapes" with Scorpions and "‘Snaz" for Nazareth. But, they have so much better music in their repertoire.

Another characteristic thing about Scorpions, that in my mind went from fab to fad, is the repeatedly use of sexist lyrics. As a young teenager it was quite amusing, but after a while it got kind of tiresome and unimaginative. This put together made, that after "Savage Amusement", I have more or less missed out on the later records. With exception for the “Wind of Change” like songs that is constantly played on all Classic rock radio stations.

But, let us leave the backside of the later years and focus on the good parts. Scorpions have made some great music throughout the years. Many legendary musicians has passed the band, and they seem to be quite nice people. Not to mention the fact that they have put German rock on the map. They were one of the first hard rock acts to make it big in Japan and they also gave the Flying V guitar a face (or two).

So, I leave you with one of their many highlights. “The Zoo”

Clutch - Crucial Velocity

New week and we'll give you a new album that will wear the title "Record Of The Week".

The album i have in mind is called "Earth Rocker", it is the tenth studio album by Meryland rockers "Clutch". It was released on March 15, 2013. Earth Rocker is produced by Machine, who also produced the band's 2004 album Blast Tyrant.

Clutch formed in 1990. Since its formation the band line-up has included Neil Fallon (vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Tim Sult (lead guitar, backing vocals), Dan Maines (bass, backing vocals) and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums and percussion). To date, Clutch has released ten studio albums, and several rarities and live albums.

Earth Rocker is heavier and faster than the preceding albums. It's more straight up rock and roll and concise than that their usal recordings. I read somewhere that this album was kicking harder than a mule on steroids :) and i guess they were referring to the title-track as that is a fist pumping one! The album contains many rockers like "Gone Cold", "DC Sound Attack", "Cyborg Bette" among others, Earth Rocker is a excellent piece of well packed music that shall be played pretty high.

Todays tune "Crucial Velocity" is taken from Clutch's latest album "Earth Rocker"

Within Temptation joined forces with Tarja for the first single of the band's new studio album to be released in January 2014.

On August 30th, the band announced that the lead single Paradise (What About Us?) would be released as an EP, which is also set to feature 3 tracks from the upcoming album in their demo form, being them "Let Us Burn", "Silver Moonlight" and "Dog Days". Upon making this announcement, den Adel said: "By releasing these demos we want to invite you in our home studio and show how we capture song ideas at an early stage of creating a new album. It will be fascinating to hear how the end result will sound like, once the album is released.". After announcing that the lead single would contain a guest musician, on September 13th the band officially announced that Tarja Turunen was set to appear as a special vocalist on the title song. The EP was released on September 27th.

Marduk - Souls For Belial

A few weeks ago did Marduk with Valkyria and Ofermod play a show at Klubben here in Stockholm. Were the two first bands did their thing with no fuzz, Valkyria was really cool so see live and did a very good show. But when it was time for Marduk to enter the stage it was time for some troubles, first problems started after the first tune where they got sound problems, then it was problems with the microphones on the drums etc etc, you get the drift, so it got a huge challenge for the band to keep up the feeling and deliver a good show with all the fuzz that distracted them during the songs, but as they are like a well oiled machine they did delivered a pretty decent show anyway.

Marduk is a black metal band from Norrköping, Sweden. The band formed in 1990 and released their first record in 1991. Their name is derived from the Babylonian god Marduk, patron deity of Babylon.

Todays tune "Souls For Belial" is taken from the latest and the 12th studio album "Serpent Sermon", released 2012.

Some side facts:
Mortuus (Daniel Rostén) the vocalist, guitarist, and bassist, known as the frontman for Funeral Mist and singer/guitarist of Triumphator under the stage name Arioch, and for having been the vocalist for renowned Swedish black metal band Marduk since 2004 under the stage name . He also runs a graphic design company called Holy Poison Design.

Flying Colors - Kayla

Flying Colors is an American supergroup composed of Casey McPherson (lead vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Steve Morse (lead guitar), Dave LaRue (bass guitar) and Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion, vocals).

It started with a simple idea: virtuoso musicians and a pop singer joining to make new-fashioned music the old fashioned way. A band followed, evolving into Flying Colors: Mike, Dave, Neal, Casey and Steve. Together, they create a unique fusion of vintage craftsmanship, contemporary music and blistering live performances.

In 2008, executive producer Bill Evans began putting the idea into action. It needed exactly the right musicians. In addition to be being extraordinary players and writers, they would need to be a natural creative fit, complementing each others’ abilities. There would be proven chemistry from past collaborations, but the new band would be different from anything they’d done. The world didn’t need another supergroup.

As with the classic albums, there also would be a strong production team who, creatively, would be an extension of the band: a visionary producer, imaginative engineer and compelling visual artist. Though they were seasoned artists with impressive backgrounds and catalogs, this would be new territory for most of them. And without a budget or a label, they came together with nothing more than a shared vision to create something special and unique.

Evans drew up a short list of four musicians and a producer: Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue, Steve Morse, Neal Morse and (producer) Peter Collins. Each artist was renowned in his domain. Drawing from rock, metal, prog, jazz-fusion, they had the potential to fuse their diverse styles into a unique, cohesive sound.

Peter Collins had helmed the intersection of virtuoso and pop music better than anyone. Collins presided over Rush’s evolution from long-form prog band to short-song rock band, producing four studio albums with them and helping drive 30 million in sales —without sacrificing their artistic integrity. His resume of more than 100 albums also included straight-forward popular acts as Bon Jovi, Jewel and Elton John.

Intrigued by the idea, and the prospect of working together, the five signed on to form a band and record a first album.

Attention then turned to finding a pop singer who could channel their combined musicality into an accessible mainstream form. Evans and Collins reviewed over 100 top contemporary singers, but no one felt exactly right. As desperation began to set in, Mike Portnoy casually mentioned, “I know a guy.” That guy turned out to be a new signing to the Hollywood/Disney label: singer/songwriter Casey McPherson.

What began as an unlikely premise had become a reality more rewarding than anyone had imagined. Refreshing, classic, old and new—Flying Colors is saturated with the many styles, tones and hues of its artists.

The group’s September 20th concert in Tilburg, Holland, was captured for what was to become Flying Colors: Live in Europe. The epic live album was released October 14, 2013 by Mascot Label Group on Blu-ray, DVD, CD, Mastered for iTunes, MP3, and as a limited edition 3-vinyl disc set.

The band is celebrating the release of Live in Europe (release 16/10-2013) with a new music video of the song that started it all! Filmed in three countries across two continents, todays tune “Kayla” captures the heart and soul of Flying Colors. The tune is taken from the self titled debut studio album, released on 26 March 2012.

Flying Colors returned to the studio on May 12, 2013 to begin writing and recording their second studio album. They are continuing work throughout the year and beyond for an expected 2014 release.

Motörhead - (We Are) The Road Crew

Hi Everyone! Spader Ess here.
As Stones and Thetania are of to the front lines of live music, paving the way for the people on stage and making sure that the machinery we all love as Rock N Roll runs smoothly, I thought it would be a good time for a hostile takeover. No, just kidding, for a few days I will try to do my best to see to that they get the working atmosphere they need to provide us with the live experiences we love. And as it is my daughters favorite artist that is been taken care of, I will try to do my best to help out here.

I will try to take on this great honor, by providing you with a series of articles about bands that used to mean a lot to me, but maybe not that much anymore. There will be varieties of course, both in length and content. Some stories might be more definite than others, and some might have a happier ending than others. Just bare with me and we’ll see where it goes.

For anyone that has read my own blog, the first band might come as a surprise. Motörhead.
As they are considered as somewhat of household gods by me, they might seem a little misplaced when it comes to a series with a theme like the famous line from Rolling Stones (no pun intended) “Because I used to love you, but it’s all over now” (I know it should be her instead of you but that doesn't fit the theme).

So, Motörhead it is,
As many people in my age, that gravitated towards Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the early eighties, Motörhead was a big part of that journey. For me it was instant love from the first chord when I first heard "Ace Of Spades". And what a crew that delivered the goods, a trio of sheer destructive madness that steamrolled their way into a young rockers heart. Fronted by what should become the godfather of rock n roll, Lemmy. Who could not love that!
The record had already been released, as I think that the first time I heard it was just a short while before "Iron Fist" was released. Which meant that the “Ace” album was going quite warm on the turntable, not a single bad track on that one if you ask me. And suddenly you were smashed with an iron fist in the mouth, positively speaking. Maybe not as strong as the previous album, but good enough.
And imagine the happiness when realizing that this is album number five, which means that there are three more earlier albums to discover. And a live album! Cheer bliss!

"Motörhead", "Overkill", "Bomber" and "No Sleep til’ Hammersmith" was on heavy rotation after that.
The replacement of “Fast” Eddie Clark with Brian “Robbo” Robertson from Thin Lizzy came as quite a shock, and at first I was a bit doubtful, both about how he would fit in with Lemmy and “Filthy” Phil Taylor, and the fact that I wanted him to stay put with my other heroes in Thin Lizzy. The result though, "Another Perfect Day", was on the other hand a quite good record, with a few songs that is more or less Motörhead standards nowadays.

After that, my first dip with the band started. "Orgasmatron" came, and now the band was a four piece, What! Disturbing news for a young rocker that likes his rock steady as a rock.
Don’t shake my foundation please! Rock It! (can anyone spell Overkill with the rock word?) :-)
The record was quite decent anyhow, but somehow, it didn’t stick with me. The next album "Rock N Roll", more or less passed without me noticing it at all.
A Long break between albums and then came "1916", which I actually liked. But then I entered the big hiatus. Don’t know why really, but it was probably due to the fact that I was somehow burned out when it came to Motörhead and the fact that Grunge entered my life with big steps.
The intermission was luckily not forever, and the older material never got out of style, but it remained until 2004, when they released the "Inferno" album that struck new life into the old love story. And I’m quite glad to say, that from that on it has remained, much due to what I consider a new spark of life in the band, which has from "Inferno" and on, brought us some of the bands best albums since the classic first five.

The records that was released in the hiatus never entered my radar, and the only thing I registered during this time was the fact that the band got a Swedish drummer in Mikkey Dee. But since then I have revisited them and much to my joy I can now see that there was some decent songs churned out on those records too. Which leads me to the conclusion that, after listening to the new album, "Aftershock", I can assure you, the love affair with Motörhead is right back on track.

And with this, I’ll leave you for this time, with a song from the most classic Motörhead album there is, and of course it’s also a tribute to Stones and Thetania.

Bob Dylan - Man in the Long Black Coat

New week and we'll give you a new album that will wear the title "Record Of The Week". However, this album is no newcomer, it was released back in 1989.

The album im talking about is "Oh Mercy" with the American musician, singer-songwriter, artist, and writer Bob Dylan.

"Oh Mercy" is the 26th studio album and saw the re-emergence of Dylan, it was hailed by critics as a triumph for Dylan, after a string of weaker-reviewed albums in the late ‘80s, although that might not have been the case without producer Daniel Lanois, best known for his work on U2’s The Joshua Tree.

Lanois really brings Dylan’s songwriting to the foreground and it only takes a listen to the first track (Political World) to show Daniel Lanois impact on Bob.

Oh Mercy's production was unlike anything ever released on a Dylan record. The album opens with "Political World" A cranky tirade against the modern world, it begins with the verse, "We live in a political world/Love don't have any place/We live in a time where men commit crime/And crime don't have a face". "Ring Them Bells" is one of the more celebrated tracks on Oh Mercy, and also where Lanois' production is at its most subtle and restrained. "Everything Is Broken" A propulsive, riff-driven number, it was the first single issued from Oh Mercy. The second half of Oh Mercy is notable for its sustained moodiness and resignation. This is in my ears one of Bob Dylan's strongest albums over the years with consistently high quality. Where all the tracks are relatively strong, although some stand out a little extra, this is an album that I recommend that you have in your record shelf.

Todays tune "Man in the Long Black Coat" is one of the masterpieces from Oh Mercy, the video is done bu Andy Colunga The tune was written in the studio, and recorded in one take. A song that makes an attack on your most vulnerable spots, sharp words from a master".
