Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots

Sunday, time for a classic tune.

"Roots Bloody Roots" is a song by Brazilian band SEPULTURA. It was released in February 1996 as the lead single from their sixth album Roots. The song is the band's best known and remains a concert staple to this day, usually being performed on encores. A music video was filmed for the single which features the band performing in an underground cave as well as on the streets with a tribe of percussionists. This video can be found on the VHS "We Are What We Are", which was later released on DVD as part of "Chaos" DVD.

The song also appears in live form on the band's live releases Under a Pale Grey Sky and Live in Sao Paulo. Another live version appears on the limited edition digipak version of the band's 2000 album Nation. Former SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera has also played the song live numerous times with his other bands SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. Recordings of their version can be found on the limited edition versions of the albums SOULFLY and PROPHECY, as well as on the DVD "The Song Remains Insane".

The music video was directed by Thomas Mignone and won the Kerrang "Video Of The Year Award" in 1996, as well as a nomination for the MTV Brazil "Best Rock Video" Award. Filming was done in the catacombs underneath the city of Salvador, where the Brazilian slaves were sold. The video is distinguished from other heavy metal imagery by its atypical use of the natural beauty of Brazil, including its traditional capoeira fight, Timbalada percussionists, and indigenous people, as well as native tribes playing the drums in their tribe uniforms. The video also shows scenes of Catholic churches. Releases

The single was released on 2 CDs and 7” vinyl. The first CD was presented in a card foldout digipak case, while the second was in a standard slimline jewel case. Early copies of the digipak version were embossed with a stamp of the band's thorned ‘S' logo. The vinyl was a strictly limited edition and was red in colour.

Found this when i was searching for the Roots cover, kinda funny :)

SEPULTURA is a Brazilian heavy metal band from Belo Horizonte. Formed in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, the band was a major force in the death metal, thrash metal and groove metal genres during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with their later experiments drawing influence from nu metal, hardcore punk and industrial metal. SEPULTURA has had several changes in its lineup since its formation, with Max and Igor Cavalera departing in 1996 and 2006, respectively. Sepultura's current line up consists of vocalist Derrick Green, guitarist Andreas Kisser, bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Eloy Casagrande.

SEPULTURA has released thirteen studio albums to date, the latest being The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart (2013). Their most successful records are Arise (1991), Chaos A.D. (1993) and Roots (1996). SEPULTURA has sold over 3 million units in the USA and almost 30 million worldwide, gaining multiple gold and records around the globe, including in countries as diverse as France, Australia, Indonesia, United States, Cyprus and their native Brazil. SEPULTURA is currently working on a new album, which is due for release around late 2016.

Killer Be Killed - Wings Of Feather And Wax

Here we have the advent of progressive groove metal with the debut album from supergroup "Killer Be Killed". The band features Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Troy Sanders of Mastodon and Dave Elitch of The Mars Volta. Each band member brings their various influences to each track creating a crazy mix of tempos and subgenres within each song. There is a lot going on here, but somehow, the band is able to mix these musical styles and the three very varied vocal styles of Cavalera, Sanders and Puciato together flawlessly on each song without sounding chaotic.

The band had slowly been working on material before announcing its name in October 2013, along with their signing to Nuclear Blast. The release date for their self-titled debut record was May 13, 2014.

The band was first announced in February 2011, when Metal Hammer reported news of Puciato and Cavalera planning a new project in the vein of Cavalera's Nailbomb band with Alex Newport in the mid 1990s. Shortly afterwards, The Mars Volta's Dave Elitch and Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders were announced to be part of the project. Despite not yet having a name, the group entered the Fortress Studio in Los Angeles, CA in September 2013 with producer Josh Wilbur. In October 2013, the band revealed Killer Be Killed as their name and announced that their first album would be released through Nuclear Blast. In March 2014, an announcement confirmed that the band's debut album would be self-titled, Killer Be Killed, and would be released on May 13, 2014. On March 14, 2014, two songs from the upcoming eponymous debut, "Wings of Feather and Wax", and "Face Down" were made available for streaming. Musical Style

Commenting on the writing process of their first album, Cavalera told Decibel that the record will be "politically charged" and that the composition will be a merging of styles of each of its members. In a press release, Puciato characterizes the style, "It’s a bit of Sabbath-y doom, a bit of thrash, a bit of hardcore and punk" continuing, "Of any of our bands, it sounds the furthest away from mine..."

Band Members:

Greg Puciato - Vocals/Guitar (The Dillinger Escape Plan)
Max Cavalera - Vocals/Guitar (Soulfly)
Troy Sanders - Vocals/Bass (Mastodon)
Dave Elitch - Drums (Ex-The Mars Volta)

Borknagar - The Earthling

Borknagar is a progressive black metal band from Bergen, Norway, founded in 1995 by Øystein Garnes Brun. The band's style combines black metal and folk metal with progressive and melodic elements. Borknagar's lyrics often deal with philosophy, paganism, nature, and the cosmos.

Earlier this year, or in fact March 26, 2012 did Borknagar release the ninth full-length album "Urd". It marks the return of vocalist/bass guitarist ICS Vortex as a permanent member, and is the second and last album by the band to feature David Kinkade; he recorded the drums as a full member of the band, but left for Soulfly before the release of the album, and is credited as a session player.

Borknagar members:

Vintersorg – harsh/clean vocals, choirs
Øystein G. Brun – electric and acoustic guitars
Jens Ryland – lead guitar
ICS Vortex – bass, clean vocals & choirs
Lars A. Nedland – keyboards, clean vocals & choirs
David Kinkade – drums & percussion

Todays tune "The Earthling" is taken from the album "Urd".

Borknagar’s founder, Øystein G. Brun commented the following about the artwork and the album: “The cover and design for ‘Urd’ is spot on when it comes to portraying the very core of the band. This time around we wanted an earthly expression through our cover and general design to support and empower the main themes on the album. You can almost smell and feel the texture of the old Norse wooden carvings – still there is a sophisticated and eclectic approach to the expression that entwines perfectly into the music. Marcelo Vasco enhanced our ideas into brilliance, he painted the face of the beast that is about to be unleashed…”

"Our previous album was called “Universal” and where should we go after an album title with such a magnitude? Well, we decided to head back home to earth. We really wanted to get back to the core of the band, where it all started – the admiration and pondering about nature and mankind’s place therein. “Urd” is the name of one of the norns that according to northern mythology stands under Yggdrasill and weaves the lifeline of mankind. “Urd” is representing the past, while “Verdande” is representing the present and “Skuld” is representing the future. You might very well say that this is an ancient expression of what we today know as DNA. And I have always been very fascinated by the fact that parts and bits of our DNA actually derive from the very beginning of time. All living creatures are somewhat connected to the very first organic cell. That is some of the story behind the album title
