The Raveonettes - The End

Thursday, time for a cover.

"The End" is an epic song by the American rock band THE DOORS. Lead singer Jim Morrison initially wrote the lyrics about his break up with his girlfriend Mary Werbelow, but it evolved through months of performances at the Whisky a Go Go into a much longer song. THE DOORS recorded a nearly 12-minute version for their self-titled debut album, which was released on January 4, 1967.

Today's version is by the Danish indie rock duo THE RAVEONETTES, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar, instruments and vocals, and Sharin Foo on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by THE EVERLY BROTHERS coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.

Today's tune "The End", by THE RAVEONETTES can be found on the compilation album "A Psych Tribute To The Doors". Features performances by THE BLACK ANGELS, THE RAVEONETTES, CLINIC, PSYCHIC ILLS, SONS OF HIPPIES, ELEPHANT STONE and more!

Johnossi - Air Is Free

After three and a half years since the last album release with the rock duo JOHNOSSI, now they are back, stronger than ever. The new single "Air Is Free" released a few days ago and in March the band goes on tour. For over a decade, JOHNOSSI attracted fans to lose themselfs in their musical universe. A band that refuses to stand still. The new bombastic single "Air Is Free" still have the base of the guitar and drums but expands their sound including wind instrument, female choir and a modern production. The friends of the Swedish producer team Asthma & Rocwell (also in the band NONONO) JOHNOSSIs shared vision and sat in the chair as the producer. Fully aware that they have never produced a rock band they were determined to keep the band's musical core, but dress it in a new modern sound suit.

Today's tune "Air Is Free" thunders with the sound in the venue size and the first sample and the start of what is to come later in the fall. JOHNOSSI released an EP on 8 November "Air Is Free" as the title track. The band's fifth album will be released in the beginning of 2017.

Coverdale/Page - Take Me For A Little While

Time for another DUO, but today we leave the term "Power DUO" and play a Rock DUO instead, do you remember the difference between them? Well todays DUO is where two men are combining their experience and create something that sounds like both worlds, really good actually.

We hear Whitesnake but in a light Led Zeppelin touch. The sound of this album was the John Bonham-influenced and former Montrose drummer Denny Carmassi.

Coverdale/Page was a musical collaboration featuring Whitesnake and former Deep Purple, Whitesnake lead vocalist David Coverdale, and former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

The project between the two artists commenced in 1991 at the suggestion of American A&R executive John Kalodner, as both artists were signed to Geffen Records at the time in North America. Their debut album, Coverdale/Page was released on 15 March 1993, reaching No. 4 in the UK and No. 5 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Five singles were released to promote the album: "Pride and Joy", "Shake My Tree", "Take Me for a Little While", "Take a Look at Yourself" and "Over Now".

It has been rumoured that Page collaborated with Coverdale in order to irk Page's former Led Zeppelin bandmate Robert Plant, who up to that point had been reluctant to reunite with Page. In interviews at the time, Plant expressed some derision at the guitarist's collaboration with Coverdale.

An American arena tour was planned for the summer of 1993, but after sluggish ticket sales the tour was scrapped in favour of a series of concerts in Japan, after which the partnership was dissolved. Page subsequently teamed up with Plant for an "UnLedded" MTV project and Coverdale returned to Whitesnake.

According to David Coverdale, the traffic sign shown on the cover of the album signified "two roads joining to one road. Try to express unification or joining together."

Todays tune ”Take Me For A Little While” is taken from the self titled album "Coverdale/Page", released by Geffen Records on 15 March 1993.

Members:

David Coverdale - lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Jimmy Page - electric guitars, bass, harmonica, dulcimer, backing vocals

The Black Keys - Howlin' For You

Another DUO act is the Americans "The Black Keys" formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2010s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson. Since 2002 they have released 8 studio albums, with 2014 Turn Blue being their latest.

Just as a note:

In 2010 they have hired touring musicians for their live performances. So in the live sense they are no longer a pure rock & roll power duo. But they did have a good run in the rock & roll tag team division.

Just like The White Stripes the band has their roots in the blues, but the Keys take is more traditional and straight ahead sound.

Todays tune "Howlin' for You" is a song by The Black Keys from the band's sixth album, Brothers.

"Howlin' for You" is featured on the soundtrack of the EA Sports video games, NHL 11. and NHL Slapshot. The song is featured in the films and in TV commercials for The Dilemma, Limitless, The Guilt Trip (film), Moneyball and Dark Shadows. It is used as the theme song to the Australian police drama television series, Cops L.A.C., and has been featured in American television series, CSI: Miami, Detroit 1-8-7, Entourage, Once Upon a Time, Prime Suspect, Chuck, Necessary Roughness, Suits, Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Chicago Code. MLB's Toronto Blue Jays use it as their home run song (except for Jose Bautista), and the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes use it as their goal song. The song was also featured in video game NBA 2K14.

The song was used in a feature on Sky Sports coverage of the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix.

An official video was released for the song. The music video—a parody of a sexploitation film trailer—was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, starring Tricia Helfer, Diora Baird, Sean Patrick Flanery, Christian Serratos, Corbin Bernsen, Todd Bridges, and Shaun White, as well as Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the band in the role of "Las Teclas de Negro" (Spanish for "The Black Keys").

A Behind-the-Scenes interview with Piliero, filmed during production of the video, has tongue-in-cheek commentary and brief clips of the cast members describing their characters.

The video was one of five nominees for the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video.

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

Jack & Meg White is the most know and undisputed champions of the rock & roll DUO’s.

The supposed to be a brother & sister duo (of course they were really ex-husband and wife, Jack taking on Meg's maiden name). The band formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. The duo then became a band, calling themselves The White Stripes, and presented themselves as brother and sister. They first performed publicly on August 14, 1997 at the Gold Dollar in Detroit. The group consisted of Jack White (songwriter, vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards, born as Jack Gillis) and Meg White (drums and occasional vocals), who were married from 1996 to 2000.

Jack White continues to be a creative musical force by his own and doing pretty well I must say.

Todays tune "Seven Nation Army" is the first track on the album Elephant, released as a single on March 7, 2003.

The song is known for its underlying riff, which plays throughout most of the song. Although it sounds like a bass guitar (an instrument the group had never previously used), the sound is actually created by running Jack White's semi-acoustic, 1950s-style Kay Hollowbody guitar through a DigiTech Whammy pedal set down an octave. A combination of the song's popularity, recognizable riff, and military lyrics led to it becoming the band's signature song, and has been used widely at sporting events and political protests internationally.

The video, directed by Alex and Martin, consists of one seemingly continuous shot through a kaleidoscopic tunnel of mirrored black, white and red triangles, touching on Jack's love of the number three. The triangle slides alternate between images of Jack or Meg playing, interspersed with marching skeletons and an elephant, referring to the name of the album "Seven Nation Army" appeared on. The speed at which the triangles move forward through the tunnel speeds up and slows down in unison with the beat of the song. During the video, when the song begins to intensify, the lights in surrounding the triangles flash and other effects build up as well.

Suicide - Cheree

Today I got a pretty nice feeling on yesterday's post, not only because it was a awesome band, more off the constellation, you know, thinking about DUO's.

Certainly, an awesome rock duo's in most people's ears / eyes is kind like this ....Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), David Gilmour and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), John Lennon and Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Steven Tyler and Joe Perry (Aerosmith) or Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth (Van Halen) the list of artists could be endless if I continue like this, this is not really what I think of when I hear the Rock Duo. What I am looking for, or where my feeling is right now, DUO, ie two people in the band and nothing else. I had to double check it, so my friend Google is around to help me and I find out that it’s called Power Duo. Well, fine by me…. So much work to work out a feeling, well, lets do it like this, let’s do a Power Duo week then. Mixed Styles of course, to make it all more interesting.

A Power duo is a two-piece rock band that follows a similar blues rock style to a traditional power trio, and whose primary lineup consists of a drummer and a guitarist (such as The White Stripes, The Like Young, The Black Keys, Local H, Japandroids, No Age, Wye Oak, Giant Drag, Blood Red Shoes, Jucifer, and '68); a drummer and a bassist (such as Death From Above 1979, and Royal Blood); or a drummer and a keyboardist (such as One Day As a Lion, and 21 Pilots). In the case of power duos that utilize only an electric guitar and drums, the lack of a bass guitar can be overcome in different ways: Jack White of The White Stripes and Joe Ziemba of The Like Young use octave dividers and pitch shifters, although most of these effects are monophonic and will not work on chords; The Black Keys often have a bassist when performing live; Scott Lucas of Local H installed one half of a split bass pickup under the lower strings of his guitar and running the signal from it to an octave pedal and a bass amplifier; guitarists Brian King of Japandroids and Randy Randall of No Age split the guitar signal between multiple guitar amps (generally one for clean and another for effects), and a bass amp; drummers Andy Stack of Wye Oak and Bobby Vega of Giant Drag simultaneously play synthesizers to fill in the gap.

Suicide is an American electronic protopunk musical duo, intermittently active since 1970 and composed of vocalist Alan Vega and Martin Rev on synthesizers and drum machines. They are an early synthesizer/vocal musical duo.

Never widely popular amongst the general public, Suicide are highly influential: critic Wilson Neate argues that Suicide "would prove as influential as The Clash. The synthpop, techno, and industrial dance sounds of the 1980s and 1990s, and now the new New Wave of electroclash, all gesture back to that foundational album."

In a November 1970 flyer the band was the first ever to use the phrase "punk music" to advertise a concert.

Todays tune ” Cheree” is taken from the debut self-titled album Suicide, released in 1977.

"Cheree" was about a girlfriend of Martin Rev. A single for the song "Cheree" was released in May 1978 on both 7-inch and 12-inch vinyl formats. The single featured a remixed version of "Cheree" with the B-Side "I Remember". John Lydon of the Sex Pistols reviewed the single for the NME, referring to it as "Je t'aime with tape hiss".
